a letter FROM THE EDITOR SUMMER IS BEST VIEWED THROUGH THE YOUTHFUL, playful and inquisitive eyes of a child. There is something about this time of year that makes everything seem possible.

I distinctly remember my summers with my grandparents. There was always an abundance of late nights, swimming and lots of sun. I’d spend all day looking around, finding little treasures here and there, which captured my imagination and allowed me to dive deep into the land of make-believe. My mind would wander and I would become immersed in tales of Arabian princes and dragons. There was nothing I felt that couldn’t be accomplished or dreamed up.

As I matured, so did my ideas. This summer edition of CV Luxury was truly a fun, creative journey. I had lots of help along the way and worked with some pretty amazing people.

When I was in LA, I met with our darling cover model, Jessica Cook – a talented young actress with a blooming career. She reminded me of a younger version of myself. The world is there to conquer and with a new film coming out in 2015, she has the right platform to do so.

I was also very fortunate to work with one of the Valley’s foremost creative geniuses, George Garcia. He is a welcome addition to our CV Luxury team and as our content grows, so will his involvement with the publication, bringing hair-raising fashion to the pages of each issue.

Something everyone likes to do in summer is travel, and to do so lavishly is an added perk. There are two breathtaking travel features in this edition. My personal favorite takes us to the prestigious El Dorado Royal Resort, located in the beautiful Mexican Caribbean. This simply stunning seaside oasis ensures its guests will relax, unwind and forget the world they left behind.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, I encourage you to take some time and enjoy the summer scenery. So, as always, sit back, relax and observe… who knows what you may discover?

and headbands. With the right amount of hairspray, backcombing and bobby pins, the bouffant could easily be achieved by women with short or long lengths, bangs, and even curlier textures.

Today’s stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore and Anne Hathaway have all tried their turn at ‘60s bouffant hair (sometimes falling short of success). Blown Away’s super stylist, Louann, is here to show you how to get it right.

For the sexy look of Jane Fonda circa 1963, Louann prepped the hair with UNITE Eurotherapy’s 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo. Dry shampoo isn’t just used to absorb natural oils after the second or third day of a blowout; it’s also used to provide texture and grip. Next, Louann started curling the hair using a 1.5” styling wand (that curling iron without a clamp) to create body, and went straight to pin curls all over. Be sure to give a good once-over to each curl with setting spray. We LOVE UNITE’s Max Control Hairspray and go through it at the salon like it’s going out of style! Let your hair sit for about 10 minutes – check your emails, get a snack or our favorite: a glass of bubbly! Remove the pin curls and brush out your hair with a bristle brush. Boar bristle brushes

Well, it’s a time for you and your husband to reflect, and feel the anticipation (my husband says it’s his favorite part so far) of your soon-to-be little one. I know all moms want to think that when you bring your baby home, it will look like a scene out of a movie – a perfect nursery, birds chirping, spring blossoms floating through the air as you enter your driveway… but alas,

THE FORECAST WRITTEN BY: LAUREN K.T. WILSON

F

inally, the bright lights of summer. The sun is out longer, your social calendar fills with seemingly endless events, the pool becomes a frequent place of repose and the mood just seems to

elevate with the temperature. Maybe it’s the extra Vitamin D, maybe it’s the idea of impending vacations, or maybe it’s just that time of year. Whatever it is, it goes without saying that there is no better excuse to revitalize your closet than a climate change.

It is the season of mindless dressing – the time of year where hemlines can be shorter and flirty, or flow long, barely skimming the floor with every step. Beautiful floral prints, exotic flair and carefree style abound. It’s when you can’t help but want to swap out all those neutrals or LBDs for something a little more show-stopping. The color palette ignites across the board from bright shades intermingling via pattern to monochromatic, punchy neon hues. Beachwear-inspired looks, breezy fabrics and swoon-worthy accessories are accentuated in layer upon layer of gold, shown in irreverent flights of fancy. The best part of all: there are a bevy of effortlessly glam choices and all options are interchangeable.

Not being one to deny our sartorial senses, the rise of the thermostat lends perfectly to the ubiquitous cleaning out of closets. It’s time to turn out a few new summer essentials and take note of a little speculative collecting. Some trends come and go, but the fundamental carefree stylTHE PERFECT EXAMPLE

SPEND A FEW MINUTES WITH JESSICA COOK… OUR EFFERVESCENT AND COLORFUL COVER MODEL WHOSE ACTING CAREER IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE WITH THE 2015 FILM, “STUNG.” GET A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE GIRL IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. Central Valley Luxury: Tell us why you wanted to become an actress. Jessica Cook: I’ve been performing in front of people since I was a little girl and my favorite thing in the entire world was to make people laugh. I wanted to become an actress purely because I love having an effect on people and being relatable… maybe change some lives in the process because watching movies helped change mine. Growing up, I watched a lot of Jim Carrey and Lucille Ball films; they made me laugh hysterically and forget all my worries. I want to be able to have that same effect on people.

CVL: Tell us some of the challenges you had in filming the movie “Stung.” JC: It was so cold in Germany where we were shooting, and I was wearing a shirt and skirt every day for a few weeks. The crew would pile up hand warmers, blankets and hot water bottles, and sit me in front of a heater between takes. It was funny, because the production crew are natives and they kept saying how it wasn’t cold at all and would poke fun at me for being cold all the time. Although, the last day, we used a couple of them as background; they couldn’t wear their big jackets in the shot and they were shivering the entire day. It was hilarious.

CVL: Any behind-the-scene anecdotes from making the movie you can share? JC: We were covered in fake blood for the last three weeks of the film. One of those days was a night shoot and we were drenched in blood, tired and ready to go home. We wrapped around 3:30am and all the actors wanted fast food, so we were too tired to care and went to McDonalds with blood all over our faces. The gal working the drive-thru was so nervous and too polite to say anything. Haha!

CVL: Do you have any desire to write, produce or direct? JC: I love to write, and I’ve produced and directed a couple of my own personal projects. I’m writing a romantic comedy right now and eventually would love to write a book. Other than that, I’ve been writing sketch comedy and performing with my improv group in the Los Angeles area.

CVL: Who is your celebrity crush and why? JC: I think I’ll have to go with Brad Pitt on this one. He seems like such a gentleman. Did you see him at the Oscars when he was handing out paper plates to everyone in the audience so they could have pizza and not make a mess all over their gowns and tuxes?! I’ll take a slice of that!

CVL: Name three people you admire and tell us why. JC: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt AKA “the power couple of Hollywood.” Not only are they extremely talented actors, but also they are humanitarians and are changing the world in a positive way. I admire how in love they are with each other, as well. Dick Van Dyke is also someone who I admire greatly. He’s a living legend. That man can do just about anything. He’s a singer, actor, comedian, producer, writer and dancer, and he does all of them well. I mean, that’s insane to me… AND he has a golden heart? That’s a star. Not only is he talented and charming, but also he gives back to the community and serves at the mission from time to time.

CVL: What is your guilty pleasure? JC: Backstreet Boys. I love them and always will!

CVL: Who is your favorite designer and how does that influence your own style? JC: Oh gosh, I love Marc Jacobs. It’s sleek, simple and he uses beautiful, clean lines. I also love the gowns and clothing from the 1940s. I love that “Old Hollywood” look.

CVL: When thinking about your career, where do you see yourself headed? JC: I don’t know what will happen. I’ll do my best and take a lot of risks, but everything is beyond my control. I just want to do what I love for the rest of my life – entertain people, and have the ability to make the audience laugh and cry along with me. I see myself making faces with Jim Carrey in a movie and taking on unique characters throughout my career. I love challenges and would love the opportunity to act in many different genres. CVL: Pick three words to describe yourself. CVL: Name one thing in your handbag that you can’t live without.

JC: Ambitious, caring and stubborn.

JC: My “glue stick.” I have this lip balm that my friends make fun of me for because it’s huge. It’s called The Mint Balm by Glō Minerals. It’s the best lip balm I’ve ever used!

CVL: In the movie of your life, who would play you and why? JC: Molly Shannon in her 20s, because she’s someone who I looked up to and emu-

LOOK as GOOD AS YOU FEEL THE SECRET LIFE OF COSMETIC PROCEDURES

D

ermal fillers and Botox® have reached a fever pitch thanks to Real Housewives and Hollywood starlets. At a time when we are seeing unnatural-

ly distorted faces on every magazine cover in the checkout aisle, there is a doctor in town who’s artfully delivering the polar opposite. For Dr. Campbell Waldrop, medical director of The MedSpa at EYE-Q, wielding needles is more than chasing wrinkles; it is about helping rediscover a younger you. When asked what is commonly requested of him, Waldrop replied, “My patients are looking for natural outcomes that make them feel like a fresher version of themselves.”

People all over the country, the Central Valley included, are aware of how they look more than ever before. In fact, according to a recent study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the rise of the ever-so-popular “selfie” has had a major impact on facial cosmetic procedures. The study revealed that one in three facial plastic surgeons surveyed saw an increase in requests for procedures due to patients being more self aware of looks in social media.

So what are people of the Valley doing to get a perfect portrait? Botox® continues to reign supreme when it comes to non-surgical procedures and is one of Waldrop’s specialties. When patients leave The MedSpa at EYE-Q they can expect to come out looking recharged – not unrecognizable. In fact, the staff says the most common description of patients post procedure, is rested. In truth, you would be surprised to know how many times Dr. Waldrop hears that co-workers are left wondering why their friends looks so refreshed. The MedSpa at EYE-Q allows you to walk away

VENTANA HILLS A WORLD APART It’s hard to beat the explosion of wildflowers blooming right now in the lush green at Ventana Hills – California poppies, lupine and fiddlenecks are putting on a spring show.

This is just a taste of life in the fertile foothills near Fresno. Ventana Hills is a 300-acre gated community featuring custom lots made available by Granville Homes.

For buyers looking to build somewhere with a little elbow room, Ventana Hills is the place. You choose the lot, the architect and the builder, and begin the process of building the dream home of a lifetime. Home sites range from two to five acres, and many lots have breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.

Ventana Hills has been designed with a trail system that meanders through the center of the community. More than 70 acres of open space help to preserve the postcard-like setting, giving homeowners room to breathe. Granville Homes has carefully designed this community to minimize impact on the surrounding environment. Special care has been taken to preserve the 1,000-year-old native oak trees. This commitment to sustainable design ensures that Ventana Hills complements its surroundings, rather than competes with it.

This community provides a tranquil sanctuary away from the bustle of the city, but it’s also just a short drive back to civilization. Golf, fishing and water activities are just around the corner at Millerton Lake, and Eagle Springs Golf and Country Club. Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake are a short drive up the mountain, providing close access to snow skiing, sailing, fishing and more.

To visit Ventana Hills, take Friant Road to Copper Avenue. Turn right on Copper, then left at Auberry Road. Enjoy the scenic 10-minute drive. To learn more about this unique community or to make an appointment for a personal tour, contact Michelle Brunn at (559) 445-9000 or visit gvhomes.com.

alm, inviting and prestigious is how I would describe this Fresno estate, located in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in

the Valley.

Tucked away on an oversized estate lot sits this majestic compound. The main structure is roughly 10,000 square feet and is bathed in natural light, making the home feel bright and airy. Within the main residence, guests are welcomed into a variety of entertaining spaces.

The main living space is flanked by windows and anchored by an oversized fireplace. A grand piano sits center, while touches of modern art and accessories can be found throughout. “Grand is perhaps the best word to describe this space.

The most notable feature of this home is how the inside translates beautifully to the outside. When entering the backyard, you are struck by the sheer size of the manicured grounds. Three balconies jut from the house, offering aerial views of the oversized pool and lawns.

Back inside, the estate offers a lavish dining room, huge game room and an eclectically furnished family room.

The easy flow from each space ensures that guests are properly pampered. The owners paid careful attention to the design ensuring that the home would be casually impressive, and it certainly is.

It never ceases to amaze me what majestic marvels can be found in what some seem to think is a sleepy little farm town. How wrong they are!

VIDA LIVING THE SIMPLE LIFE WRITTEN BY: SHARON DUNCAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY: LINDSEY ASHJIAN

D

escribing the people of Costa Rica is about as easy as explaining how you feel while basking in the sun there: relaxed, calm, happy,

easy-going. I was pleasantly surprised at their hospitality and eagerness to please. More often than not, the people would say, “Thank you for visiting our country.” While Costa Rica may be poor in many ways, they are very rich in life. It’s no wonder Costa Rica means “Rich Coast.”

“Pura Vida” translated literally means “Pure Life” or “Simple Life” and is very commonly used in everyday happenings. Costa Rica is considered one of the happiest countries in the world, mostly because they don’t stress about things that most of its visitors do. They have a very relaxed way of looking at life: no worries, no stress. To them, Pura Vida means being thankful for what they have. What better way to live than that?

While Costa Rica is simple and laidback, it offers a wide range of tourist pleasures: exquisite food, tropical rain forests, sparkling white-sand beaches, volcanic black-sand beaches, horseback riding, hot spring mud baths, enticing diving and boating… and did I mention some of the most exquisite food?! You may think I must really love to eat, but the truth is, I just really love their food! Some of my favorites included: seaside lobster, ceviche, fresh off the boat sushi, Caribbean fusion, grass-fed beef, freerange chicken, and the rice and beans unique to their cuisine. This all made for some of the most amazing food I have ever eaten. And it certainly doesn’t hurt to enjoy it while sitting on the beach at sunset.
