What started out as a modest watch repair business has grown into one of the premier jewelry companies in the Valley, specializing in engagement rings and watches. Ara, his wife, Lena, and his team have established themselves as the leading authority on all things diamonds, gems and watches. With the latest laser welding and microscope technology, not only can they repair those most treasured items you’ve had tucked away because they no longer work or need a talented hand to fix, but they can also make them look like new, breathing life into your most treasured family heirlooms. Designing a custom piece of jewelry or even a watch is made easy at Ara Karkazian Watch and Jewelry Company. Ara and his team of experts make designing that perfect engagement ring a breeze. The trend for engagement rings is putting a twist on the traditional princess and cushion cuts. Many brides are opting for oval cut diamonds with mixed metal bands and embracing the ever-present “rose gold.” Stackable rings are also making a statement this year; the only limit is the length of your finger! Ara and his team stay abreast of the latest trends by continuing their education and attending international shows, to bring you the latest in all things bridal. With their newly-expanded show room, Ara and his friendly staff will walk you through the steps of designing that perfect setting. Using the latest in digital technology, Ara and his team draft an original work of art. They will help guide you through the selection of the perfect stones and make the necessary adjustments before casting your one-of-akind setting. After the design and gem selection, they will cast a mold of your ring in resin and make sure you are thoroughly satisfied with the results before crafting the final piece. The whole process takes about three weeks and ends with a unique piece of art that creates a lasting impression on the one you love. With an established reputation and a charitable local spirit, Ara and Lena Karkazian will be sure to make you a lifelong customer by seeing and experiencing the difference of what they offer. You don’t need to travel to San Francisco or Los Angeles to find that unique and special piece … just visit Ara Karkazian Watch and Jewelry Company on the corner of Bullard and West, “Where Luxury Lives.”

A Pinot’s Love Story It was over a year ago that I visited Pinot’s Palette for the first time.
Paint. Drink. Have Fun. www.PinotsPalette.com/Fresno
As I strolled by the studio I noticed the fun pieces of art displayed in their windows. The doors were open allowing the music and laughter to spill out. There were many people inside with halfpainted canvases lining the tables. Some guests were seated and painting while others were roaming through the studio sipping wine and admiring the paintings that filled the walls. I thought to myself…I love art and I love wine, I want to do this too! So I did, and from the moment I arrived until the evening was over I felt a connection. I visited with the ladies sitting next to me, sipped wine and enjoyed the music all while painting my very first piece of art.
I'm so delighted to share the Pinot's experience with our community. To provide a place where we can gather and enjoy the company of one another and the opportunity to be creative in an inspirational atmosphere.
It must have been a combination of the atmosphere paired with a wine for dreamers and the vibrant colors streaked across the canvas I was so proud of.
That night I realized that I was in love with Pinot’s Palette.

Bridal Season is here and CVLUX has the beauty tips you need to make it down that aisle, feeling beautiful! Here are our timeless beauty trends for all 2016 brides-to-be. CVLUX predicts bright, glowing skin, pink lips, soft and smoky eyes, laid back hairstyles, neutral nails and whimsical braids.
NAILS Once you have the main necessities locked down, like your dress, hair and makeup, it’s time to sit back, relax and book that mani/pedi appointment. This season, it’s all about the neutral tones. Whether you’re the bride, bridesmaid or simply a guest at the wedding, having a fresh manicure and pedicure is essential. No matter what color or pattern your dress is, neutral tones like Ani Michele’s Wedding Planner or Crème De La Crème will keep you perfectly covered on your special day.
MAKEUP Keeping it natural and naked is the most classic wedding makeup style. This is a look most often popular for brides having beach or outside weddings. According to celebrity makeup artist, Spencer Barnes, a common wedding makeup request is giving brides’ skin a dewy look. Barnes suggests achieving this natural, radiant and polished face by using a highlighter and a setting spray. Barnes recommends Benefit’s Dandelion Shy Beam to attain that natural glow, and adding NYX Makeup Setting Spray so that makeup stays put and maintains a fresh look throughout the day. Makeup with a bold statement is traditional and always stands the test of trends. This makeup style is quite the opposite of the Natural/Naked look. Bold eyes and strong, defined lips are great for an evening wedding. Barnes encourages using a pink or coral lip tone that works well with your skin color while working that traditional bold makeup. This will add a bit of romance to the smoky eye, luxurious lash and bold brow look.

HAIR Weddings take the cake when it comes to big “hair moments,” and women are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their hair looks picture perfect beneath their veils. After all, this is a one-shot opportunity to make the most glorious bridal entrance ever. In fact, according to a recent national survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of national hair brand, Joico, over 70% of American women agree, the biggest “hair moment” of a woman’s life is her wedding. CVLUX is bringing you two trends that are unstoppable and timeless when it comes to wedding hair for 2016, and bridal seasons to come. According to celebrity hair stylist, Mika Fowler, “allow to do hair” is on trend. Undone updos and free-flowing locks are easy to manage, effortless, and allow the bride to focus on what’s important on her special day. These looks are clean, uncomplicated and fashionable. Allowing your hair to do what is does is a sexy alternative to the traditional bun or curly locks. Fowler recommends the bride begins with a hairstyle she loves, whether that’s a classic twist or leaving her hair down and flowy. To give your hair some extra texture, either tease or add waves before pulling it back, Fowler says. Allow strands to hang loosely and frame the face gracefully with a gorgeous, unforced feel. Fowler uses KuscoMurphy Lavender Hair Crème on damp hair before being blown out to encourage curl or waviness; the flexibility of your hair will enhance naturally. Using a small quantity on the ends is the way to pull off the most texture. Braids have made a big statement since the beginning of 2016. Some of the hottest bridal designers are pairing their runway looks with braid trends this year. From face-framing halos to elaborate intertwined updos, braids definitely make a statement. Celebrity stylist, Castillo, who gives Ruby Rose jaw-dropping braids, recommends a totally romantic style braid with an up-do, laying braids, with face-framing loose strands, a loose, windswept fishtail braid. Castillo recommends using Oribe’s Superfine Strong Hair Spray, locking in must-hold styles with lustrous, natural shine.

PICTURE perfect THE QUEEN OF PEELS GETS HITCHED Beauty Editor Jennifer Conroy Photographer Flora and Fauna

arya Khalil, CEO and President of VI Aesthetics gets married! VI Aesthetics are the creators of the FIRST and Only Completely Painless Peel. For over a decade, world-renowned doctors like Jason Emers, Garth Fisher and Sonia Batra who treat A-list patients have all turned to the VI Peel. For years women have prepared for the perfect wedding skin by visiting their local dermatologists and asking for a peel to brighten, enhance and perfect their existing skin condition. The VI Peel was first created by doctor to the stars, Dr. Abdala Khalil. He created the peel for his daughter, Marya, in the hopes of clearing her teenage acne. Now the little girl who he created it for is running the company. After her father’s passing three years ago, Marya stepped up to take on her father’s legacy. Marya Khalil married producer, Dylan Otto, at the historic Vizcaya in Miami. Their three-day wedding was magical, with a Cuban Romantic theme. Everything was perfect for the VI Peel queen, with natural and romantic floral designs consisting of garden roses, ranunculus, and white peonies with seeded eucalyptus. The ceremony and reception were decorated in creamy whites and soft neutral tones of ivory and almond blush throughout. At the reception a three-tier wedding cake awaited the couple in a glowing tent, just off the water. A flower wall and cigar roller gave guests a good time while dancing under the stars. Guests feasted on bites made with an incorporation of Lebanese and Jewish flavors, which celebrated both Khalil and Otto’s cultural heritage. Khalil’s mother is Cuban and her father was Lebanese. The groom’s family is Jewish, so the menu included bites such as “Matzo Ball Soup shots,” “Mini Reubens with half sour pickle garnish,” and “Potato Latkes with caramelized pork belly and Siracha,” to name a few.

ith so much color, vibrancy, food, people, rituals, music, fun and frolic, the Indian wedding is truly a festival in itself. It not only unites the bride and groom, but also their families. Atul Jain and Neeta Varshney met while volunteering at a health fair for the underserved in Los Angeles. It wasn’t long before the two doctors (who were giving eye exams) only had eyes for each other. Hindu weddings customarily begin with a baraat, a traditional Northern Indian wedding procession in which the groom rides on a white horse to the bride and her family. “We decided to go all out and have an elephant take Atul down the grove,” Neeta says, “with his family and friends cheering him along the way.” This vibrant wedding, filled with bold colors, flowers, music and dancing into the night was truly an intoxicating feast for the senses.

A
s we move from spring into summer, Empire actress, Kaitlin Doubleday, has a hot tip: “Put your clothing on the hangers backwards; when you wear it, put the hanger the other way. If it stays backwards for a year you know you won’t wear it and you can throw it away.”
She can’t take full credit for the idea; she read it in Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Art of Tidying Up. Well, okay, she googled it — she hasn’t read Kondo’s book yet, but she’s planning to. In her defense, she’s been pretty busy. Over 15 million viewers tune in to watch her play Rhonda Lyon on Fox’s Empire. She lives in Chicago for most of the year filming the musical drama, and she’s been planning a summer wedding for the past few months. In fact, by the time this interview is published, she will have married DJ Devin Lucien in a beautiful ceremony along California’s Central Coast. Kaitlin certainly has a lot on her plate, but she’s used to it; she’s been working hard for a pretty long time. An LA-native, Kaitlin was born into a family of actors. Her father, Franklin Doubleday, was cast as the villain in various ‘80s action movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and Escape from New York. Her mother, Christina Hart, started as an actress and has now directed over 50 plays. Her sister, Portia Doubleday, is on the USA drama, Mr. Robot. Now Kaitlin and her family turn to each other when preparing for a role. “We work with each other, run lines, ask for advice. Well, my parents don’t ask us … we ask them. They’ve been doing it 30 years longer than I have.” Even though they made their living performing, Kaitlin’s family was less-than-thrilled when Kaitlin first admitted her ambition to join the family business. “They definitely were like, ‘Really? I don’t know if you want to do that.’ It’s hard, especially to have children … I always thought I would go into another career.” But after a visit to the Music Academy at Hamilton High School “blew her away,” Kaitlin decided to try it. The school’s drama department really put their all into its productions, showcasing the students-slash-performers and supporting their growing talent. “The shows were really high quality, unparalleled in any other school,” says Kaitlin, and Hamilton’s notable alums can certainly speak to that; Kaitlin was classmates with Master of Sex’s Lizzy Caplan, Mission: Impossible’s Paula Patton, and Into the Wild’s Emile Hirsch, to name a few. “Once I got on stage I was like ‘oh I guess this is where I have to be now,’” Doubleday remembers. But it would take a lot of steps and soul-searching to embrace her ambitions. Kaitlin’s obvious talent secured her an agent in her teens (something she calls a “weird, miracle experience”). But she was worried that she should focus her efforts on applying to college.
44
cvlux.com @cv_luxury
“I got an agent at a show I was doing in high school … still, I thought I was going to go to [college]. I didn’t know if I was for sure going to major in theater.” Kaitlin started applying to colleges on the East Coast, because, “I felt like in another life I grew up in New York.” But Hollywood was insistent on keeping one of its own. Kaitlin was given a small role in Steven Spielberg’s 2002 biographical crime dramedy Catch Me If You Can, which gave her momentum and thrust some more acting opportunities into her lap. “I loved auditioning, I loved the work. I didn’t want to graduate with loans and get a new agent at 22.” So Kaitlin continued to audition, travelled in her free time, and “forgave [herself] for not going to college.” Choosing not to go to school didn’t mean foregoing learning experiences. “I backpacked through Thailand, India, and Peru, one month in each,” Kaitlin remembers, describing the life-changing trip as filled with “happygo-lucky, sweet, open” locals. She visited family in London, taking in a bustling city after experiencing the wildness of foot travel. She studied acting with famed coach, Gregory Berger-Sobeck, a faculty member at the Yale School of Drama. She describes him as her mentor. Meanwhile, the roles kept coming. She was in the 2005 comedy Waiting… starring soon-to-be-internationallyknown heartthrob, Ryan Reynolds. Her performance as sexually-adventurous Logan Lewis on HBO’s Hung ended up sowing the seeds for her current and most notable role. “She was overly sexual and very comfortable in her own skin, and I’m more shy,” Doubleday comments. “I feel like after playing her … she was completely forward, over the top, made no apologies, powerful, used her sexuality. I feel like I use that girl when I’m playing a powerful woman, which I feel Rhonda is.” If you haven’t been paying much attention to your television lately, the “Rhonda” Kaitlin is referring to is Rhonda Lyon, one of the main characters on Fox’s runaway hit, Empire. Kaitlin’s character is the wife of Andre Lyon, the eldest son in a music mogul family secretly suffering from bipolar disorder. The show is part musical, part soap opera, and full of commentary on racial stereotypes in both the music industry and American society at large. So, how did Kaitlin get in the running to be part of it? Her answer is refreshingly simple.
46
cvlux.com @cv_luxury
“I just auditioned, just like any other show,” she says. “It came across my email and I thought ‘wow’ because of the people involved.” The “people” she is referring to is a very long, very exciting list. The show was created by Lee Daniels, director of the Oscar-winning film, Precious, and Danny Strong, who is known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls. Empire stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, but it wasn’t all these credits that grabbed Kaitlin Doubleday’s attention. “When Timbaland was doing the music, that floored me; I grew up on Timbaland. He made all of the Justin Timberlake beats, Aaliyah, all the ‘90s stuff everyone was dancing to. You can never predict what show is gonna be a success. A million shows you read and think, ‘well this is gonna be huge, everybody’s gonna be obsessed with this,’ and it never sees the light of day. But with Empire I thought, ‘this has to have a life somewhere.’” In speaking with Kaitlin, it’s clear that she really follows her gut. Most of her peers were going off to college, but she decided not to. Even though she was attracted to a life on the East Coast, she loved auditioning and getting work, so she stuck it out on the West. And while a lot of components of Empire might have seemed improbable to someone else, Kaitlin could see a future for the show. And this living-by-intuition gal shows no signs of slowing down. She’s embracing every unexpected turn on Empire. “I didn’t think Rhonda would get pregnant,” she says, “It was fun having a pregnant belly.” And she’s pretty sure she’s taking on a first for the Empire cast. “I feel like I’m the first one to get married in a traditional wedding sort of way.” The May 6th wedding was held at the Ventana Inn and Spa in Big Sur, with a party afterwards where Kaitlin (following her gut again!) swapped her wedding dress for a shorter number, complete with Adidas sneakers. “‘Surround yourself with what you love,’ is what that book says,” Kaitlin recalls, revisiting The LifeChanging Art of Tidying Up as we finish our interview. “It makes for a more comfortable existence.” After hearing about Kaitlin’s life, I think she might be onto something.
A CONVERSATION WITH THE VALLEY’S PREMIER BRIDAL BOUTIQUE OWNER SHERRI MOSHER Features Editor Erika Wilde
Brides in the Central Valley have been choosing their bridal gowns at Madeleine’s Bridal for decades, a tradition that continues today, and for good reason. In the heart of quaint Old Town Clovis, this elegant boutique is the perfect place for brides to choose from the finest designer gowns with the help of expert bridal consultants. CVLUX talked to Sherri Mosher, owner of Madeleine’s Bridal Boutique to find out what makes her boutique the perfect place for brides to find the wedding gown of their dreams.
CVLUX: Madeleine’s is a very well-known bridal store. How did this come about? Where did the name come from?
CVLUX: How have you seen the bridal industry change, especially with plus-size bridal dresses becoming increasingly popular?
Sherri Mosher: The original Madeleine’s Bridal Aisle began in 1954 under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Hastie when they opened the store in Fresno’s Tower District. They named the bridal store after their darling daughter Madeleine. Years later Jack Hurley purchased the store and retained the name because his mother’s name was Madeleine. After various locations and transformations of Madeleine’s Bridal, I purchased the bridal store in 2004, tweeking the name to Madeleine’s Bridal Boutique to add a flair and make it unique to my ownership. Can’t lose the name; it is a household brand in the Central Valley.
SM: I have seen it change in many ways with the internet these days. We live in a world where people find it easier to do their shopping on the internet for convenience. We find that they will find a dress, make an appointment, come try it on, and then go online to buy. It’s very important that we give fabulous customer service, educate them about online sales and make them feel buying from us is in their best interest. Plus size brides are one of my favorite kind of bride. They want to feel special and sexy just like the size 10 bride. They want the fit and flare, lace and all the styles the smaller brides like. It is important to have those styles available for the full-figured bride. She is just as important and it is her special day.
CVLUX: How do you choose the designers for your gowns? What is most important to you when making these decisions? SM: When choosing which designers to carry in our store the most important factor is finding a company that carries unique gowns at a good price point. We have to keep in mind what girls are wanting and seeing, and be able to pick out a variety of styles and looks that will give these brides plenty of options as they shop for that one-of-a-kind dress. CVLUX: What are your thoughts on trends? What trends do you anticipate in 2017? SM: The big trend we are seeing right now in the bridal world are crop-tops, crepe fabrics and two-piece dresses which are interchangeable (different tops with different bottoms). Still lots of lace, but more illusion necklines and sleeves. For 2017 you will see more deep plunging necklines, cutouts, drop shoulders, bare backs and lots of sheer everything. Big bows are back and they are everywhere in all sizes and shapes. You will see soft pastels and 3-D floral appliques. Caplets were big on the runway for 2017, along with sheer streamer sleeves. We will still see lace, boho styles and the vintage inspired gowns.
CVLUX: What advice would you give a newly engaged bride about how to begin her bridal gown selection? SM: I think there are a few important steps before beginning to shop for your gown. You should: have your wedding date set, venue selected, budget not only for your bridal gown but also include a budget for your accessories and alterations. Be realistic and honest about your budget. Research styles you like and clip pictures to bring to the salon. Come with your mom, grandma and your maid of honor. When you find some favorites then make an appointment to come with your bridal party. Too many people at the first appointment leads to disappointment. Too many opinions tend to disenchant the bride. Come with an open mind … you have a style in mind but be willing to try on different styles to see what best fits your body. Always make an appointment with the bridal salon. Bring a shoe with the heel height that you would be wearing so you get a feel of how you will look. Most important advice … have fun! This is your special day; make it original, beautiful and one-of-a-kind, because the memories will last a lifetime.

Happily Ever After THE WEDDING OF COURTNEY GOLDMAN TO BRADLEY SMITTCAMP
Contributor Asher Corey Photographer Reverie VP Location First Presbyterian Church and Smittcamp Family Estate Event Planners Susan Vang-Xiong and Kristan O’Neill Date April 2, 2016 Total Guests 350
T
he much anticipated wedding of Courtney Goldman to Bradley Smittcamp was held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church. This couple’s whirlwind romance can only be described as something from a fairytale, so it was no surprise that the day they joined as husband and wife would be just as perfect. “We wanted to create a memorable event for our families and guests,” explains Courtney. “We wanted to work with people who could create a beautiful and unforgettable evening for us and our guests.” Courtney and Brad’s vision for their special day was simple. In their words, what they wanted most was, “to make the event magical.” Specifically working with a list of people the couple admired was of major importance in the manifestation of the couple’s vision of their day. This list included expert professionals and artists, some of whom were family friends, including Kristan O’Neill of Wildflower Designs and Susan VangXiong of Circle of Events (event planners), Reverie VP (photography), Kara Anne Paper (stationary), Judy Gentile Gaither of Gentile’s Flower Basket (floral design), Pardinis’s Catering (food) and Jean-Charles Boisset (wine and champagne) and many more.

“We wanted to create a memorable event for our families and guests.”
The couple’s choices proved discerning; from the elegant ceremony in one of Fresno’s most beautiful churches, First Presbyterian, to the reception that was truly decadent and took place on the gorgeous grounds of Brad’s family estate, the couple created something breathtaking. All fairytales have a beginning, though, that forms the background of the story. Courtney and Brad’s story began in Fresno, where both the bride and groom were raised in well-respected families in the community, and knew one another socially. The night they met was at one of North Fresno’s favorite restaurants, FIVE. Both Courtney and Brad were single at the time, and Courtney was out with some friends, when they were reacquainted. “We knew we knew [one another] and when I saw Brad [that night], I knew I just needed to get to know him!” Courtney recalls. They didn’t stop wanting to see one another and began a sweet courtship. Soon the couple confessed their love to one another, and they began to talk about the possibility of marriage. “Bradley proposed on August 9, 2015 on a family vacation to Aptos, California,” Courtney remembers fondly of the defining night in their love story. “It was a special moment surrounded by our families.” “Courtney and Bradley are the perfect combination for each other,” said Catherine McDonnell, Courtney’s Maid of Honor. “They balance each other perfectly, bring harmony to each other’s lives, push each other in the right ways and make each other even better people (if that’s even possible). The way they love each other is admirable, refreshing and beautiful.” When the wedding day finally arrived, it was a beautiful April morning. Many young girls imagine their wedding day like something out of a storybook, and part of that is “looking like a princess,” but when Courtney was ready for her wedding, she didn’t have to imagine. When Brad and Courtney shared their “first look,” the moment when

he first caught a glimpse of his bride in her finery, with the wedding party, their closest and dearest friends, watching from a balcony above, the bride looked every bit a princess. Courtney’s natural beauty and elegance was enhanced by a dress designed by Oscar De La Renta. Courtney saw the dress in the Spring 2016 runway show and fell immediately in love. “When I attended the trunk show for the Spring 2016 collection it was the first dress I tried on,” Courtney says, and it is no wonder since she is as style-savvy as she is charming. Peeking out from under her gown was her “something blue:” Manolo Blahnik’s that she spotted shoe shopping with her Maid of Honor in New York. It was love at first sight for the bride, and the shoes made a striking statement while still evoking nostalgic “slippers” on the feet of a long-ago princess. With her “something blue” ready for the wedding day, Courtney assembled the traditional “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” details with care. “My ‘something old’ was my grandmother’s handkerchief that my mother-in-law embroidered with my monogram. My ‘something new’ was my diamond and pearl earrings, a gift from my parents. My ‘something borrowed’ was my mother’s diamond bracelet. My ‘something blue’ was my shoes!” Courtney says, and adds, “Both Brad and I had something blue for our wedding day! His was a signet ring that was given to him by me as a wedding present.” We asked Courtney what stood out most on her wedding day, and her response reveals her and Brad’s connection and love for their family. First she describes that “first look” she shared with Brad in his parents’ garden, while the wedding party celebrated on the balcony overhead. Next she remembers: “When they pronounced us husband and wife the church bells rang when we kissed, and as the Bach Children’s Choir sang ‘Going to The Chapel’ while we walked down the aisle.”
Lastly she recalled the fun tradition in Brad’s family that was continued by Brad’s cousins performing a choreographed dance to a medley of songs. The couple didn’t know what the songs would be, and were surprised when they performed. “They were fantastic!” raves Courtney. Amidst the decadent swaths of white fabric, candle-lit tables dripping with lush floral arrangements, music and delicious food, the bride and groom made an intentional effort to greet and connect with each guest. So many details were artfully rendered to the couple’s specifications and executed so professionally, the couple says they were able to enjoy the people they love. Not only that, the couple made several choices that weren’t just beautiful, but also meaningful. “We wanted to honor [our families] by using a cake topper that Brad’s maternal grandparent’s used on their wedding cake in 1948,” explains Courtney, “and we were thrilled to have our reception at Brad’s paternal grandparent’s home. Even though they are no longer with us, it was so special to have the reception on the property.” Breathtaking, romantic and truly one-of-a-kind, this special day will forever remain in the minds of their guests, family and of course with each other.

MY
ONE AND ONLY THE WEDDING OF CHRIS AND JENET GRANT Lifestyle Editor Pandora Vanderpump Sabo Photography Jose VillaÂ
C
hris and I met through a mutual friend and it was the typical story of a guy romancing a girl. He pursued and I played hard to get. After dating for a few months, he asked me to meet his family in New York and particularly, his grandmother who was very much the matriarch. In the hotel elevator, on the way to meet her, he awkwardly told me he loved me for the first time. I tried to alleviate the flustered aftermath by letting him know that he didn’t need to worry about saying the “L word” prematurely. Upon my entrance at his grandmother’s apartment, she immediately asked me to sit next to her. She took one of my hands in hers and cupped her other hand to my face. Looking at me sweetly and with the biggest grin she exclaimed, “She’s not like the others!” From that moment on, we all knew that my place in the family had been solidified. He proposed 9 months later. We chose Carneros Inn in Napa Valley for our wedding venue because it felt like it had certain aesthetic elements of where we both were raised. Chris grew up in New York City, and I in Montana. The property has such a chic and upscale feel like the city, but is also loosely romantic like the country. We wanted the wedding to feel like we gathered a bunch of our closet friends and ran away to the countryside for the weekend. We got married in an apple orchard and danced underneath the light of a super moon!

New Addiction: Floral & Gold Leaf Confetti I recently came across this gorgeous confetti and have been trying hard not to use it at every event I throw. Not only is it unique, fun and beautiful, it’s also ecoconscious. Tiny pieces of glimmering gold leaf flakes, assorted colored flower petals and biodegradable confetti combine into the most adorable table adornment, perfect for any bridal event. I’ve used this confetti in so many ways — it’s so versatile! You can sprinkle it over a glittering tablescape, tie the adorable glass tube to a gift, hang it on the backs of the chairs for people to throw as the couple walks down the aisle … you name it! Available at www.ThrowConfetti.com Bridal Bubbly: The Perfect Summer Cocktail This cocktail will be on repeat at every event I have this summer. It’s delightfully crisp and bubbly from the champagne, sweetly floral from the elderflower liqueur, and tart and fragrant from the fresh mint and lime. This special sparkling delight is feminine without being overly sweet and is the perfect way to dress up your bubbles with ease! Ingredients ½ lime, sliced Handful fresh mint ½ oz St. Germain liqueur 1 oz Vanderpump Vodka 3 oz Champagne Ice Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

7.
Add the lime wedges to a shaker with the mint leaves. Add the St. Germain and muddle until the mint is broken up. Add the vodka to the shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a champagne or cocktail glass and top with champagne, slowly. Add more St. Germain to sweeten, if necessary. Enjoy!
Bridal Shower Bites: Two Easy & Elegant Hors d’Oeuvres These are two of my favorite summer hors d’oeuvres, especially for bridal showers. Bite-size, quick to prepare and elegantly delicious, both of these are the perfect snack for a summer celebration. Prosciutto & Honeydew Skewers A take on the Mediterranean classic, these little skewers are visual and flavorful. I like to use honeydew instead of cantaloupe, as the color combo is so pretty! Ingredients 1 honeydew melon 4 oz thinly sliced Prosciutto Olive Oil Black pepper Basil Toothpicks Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Cut the melon into bite sized pieces. Roll up strips of the Prosciutto. Place a toothpick into each piece of Prosciutto and then add the melon. Set on a plate, drizzle with olive oil and crack black pepper over the top. Garnish with basil and rose petals.
Smoked Salmon on Pumpernickel with Herb Crème Frâiche I would eat these every day — they are light, bright and perfect for tray passing! The flavor of fresh summer herbs takes these to another level! Ingredients 1 package smoked salmon 1 package pumpernickel bread ‘Cocktail Slices’ ¾ lemon, sliced 1 small crème frâiche 1 handful each of fresh basil and dill Black Pepper Dill to garnish 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Preheat the oven to 250˚. Place the pumpernickel on a baking sheet and lightly toast for five minutes. Open the salmon and squeeze half of your lemon over the top. Dice the herbs and add to the crème frâiche. Squeeze a ¼ lemon into the mixture and stir until combined. Spread herbs and crème frâiche over the bread slices. Top with salmon slices. Garnish with another dollop of the herb and crème frâiche, a piece of dill and cracked black pepper.

Bridal Blooms: Pink Perfection Pink has long been the go-to color choice for bridal showers and weddings alike, and for good reason: the color pink is happy, romantic, delicate, and best of all, doesn’t overwhelm in photographs. However, where the wedding itself tends to err on the subtle pale and neutral blush side of the pink spectrum, the bridal shower can have a little more punch! Here are some of my favorite ways to embrace the pink tradition while still maintaining a lot of personality. Rustic Wildflowers The contrast of very elegant, structured flowers with slightly messy wildflowers is one of my favorites. Pair classic orchids and roses with seeded eucalyptus and delicate wildflower stems for a look that is countryside romantic and perfect for any bride with a love for nostalgia. Beautiful Brights Throwing a shower for a bride with a wild side? Why not add a major pop of color! A stunning bright pink can be absolutely gorgeous, especially when paired with some interesting neutrals. I love using Snow on the Mountain, with its variegated white and green leaves, as it’s unusual and beautiful. Pepper in some pale-pink hyacinths or roses to tie everything together and you have a stunning arrangement fit for any bridal event. Summer Bounty One of the best things about pink flowers is that they mix so perfectly with a variety of colors. From lavenders and lilacs to reds and oranges, pink unites these colors for an arrangement that is bold, elegant and reflective of whatever theme you choose. I love pink and orange peonies paired with romantic red roses and mauve hydrangeas. Add in some pale greens to blend the colors together and you have a gorgeous and unique summer bouquet! Babydoll Classics Want to stick with the classic pale pink and white? There are so many ways to do this that are chic and beautiful, from traditional tea roses to orchids. I love a relaxed springtime approach to this color combo — try pale pink and white tulips paired with white hyacinths and hydrangeas for a full, beautiful display that is just the right amount of fun.

Fine Food, Family, Friends, Finesse....F(PH)enomenal Jim Pardini! CVLUX caught up with Jim Pardini to find out what’s cooking. Jim Pardini was born to Albert and Mary Jane Pardini in Santa Cruz, California, where his Dad owned a restaurant. The Pardini family moved to Fresno in 1952, where Jim attended St. Therese grammar school and then went on to San Joaquin Memorial, where he graduated in 1964. He was voted “most talkative” by his fellow classmates, something that hasn’t changed all these years later. Jim graduated with a BA degree from CSU Fresno. However, he had been mentored by his dad, Al, a great restauranteur, who owned and worked long hours with several restaurants in Fresno, so going into the restaurant business was a natural fit for Jim. Growing up, Jim worked every job imaginable in his dad’s restaurants: washing dishes, prepping vegetables, bussing tables, taking orders from customers and any other restaurant task you can imagine. At the age of 18 he began to really learn the art of cooking and to tend bar, and in 1969, Al and Jim opened what would be Jim’s first restaurant on Clovis Avenue in Sunnyside. Young Jim became manager of the dinner house. In 1971 they opened Pardini’s restaurant on Shaw and Van Ness, and then in 1981, Jim founded Pardini’s Catering Company, one of the largest and most established catering companies in the San Joaquin Valley. Today the Shaw Avenue site serves as his base where it houses the banquet facility for special events. It’s also home to the newest Pardini adventure by Jim’s two sons, Jeff and Jimmy Pardini, who have launched the successful Italian bistro, The Annex Kitchen. Jim is the exclusive caterer and concessionaire for the Convention Center, as well as Master Concessionaire for the Big Fresno Fair and Master Concessionaire for CSUF baseball, football and softball.

Jim’s company has become a fixture here in the Valley, and as such has been part of some of the most eventful things that have happened in our lives: weddings, graduations, anniversaries, birthday parties, funeral receptions, bar mitzvah celebrations and so much more. And not only that, he has been present at most of them as well. I felt it best to contact a few people to describe this incredible individual so here are a few comments from people who really know him: Carolyn Goss (Jim’s younger sister): “Jim is a very competitive person. He wants the best for everyone. He was always busy growing up, horse riding, the swim team and basketball team. He still is extremely busy and active. My Dad taught him to ‘treat all your customers as if they were guests in your own home,’ and that is the philosophy that [Jim] follows. He is hands-on, working side-by-side with his staff at events, he has a heart of gold and he can never say no!” Jim Ashjian of Ashjian Lighting: “I have had the privilege of being friends of Jimmy for the past 50 years. I was best man at his wedding. He is not only kind and generous to his friends and families, but he cares for his Community as well. I often have joked that the only other person I know who fed more people at an event was Jesus Christ when he fed the multitudes on the mountain with loaves and fishes!” Lou Amendola, President and CEO of Valley Wide Beverage: “Jim has developed his Company to become the premier catering company in this Valley, where we are known for the best food raised in the world, and he has brought that wonderful food, value, and attention to detail to every event that is catered, to be not just an event, but eventful for his customer. He [has] the uncanny ability to cater an event for 30 people or 3,000 people, and maybe have two other events for 1,600 people the same day, and is very calm and never rattled … Somehow [he] attends all of

these events exhibiting his charm, wonderful wit and attention to each event as if it was the only thing he had on his calendar that day. This is truly why we are blessed to have such a special person attending to all of our needs in our community.” Debbie Poochigian, Fresno County Supervisor: “I have known Jimmy since 1980 and he has done every family wedding, many political fund raisers and BBQ’s for my husband, Chuck, for over 1600 people at Coombs Riverbend Ranch. I organized one of my first political events with Jimmy in 1990. He was always so kind and accommodating to me. His dinners are special … and the meals wellprepared and delicious. I would go around checking on everyone over the years at my events, and all had a great time and I know they loved his food because the plates were ‘licked clean.’ Often times, I would find him back with his staff in the kitchen, cooking and making sure all was well with the dinner. His is a longstanding tradition with decades of excellence [and] attention to every detail. He makes every event special!” DeWayne Zinkin, of Zinkin Enterprises: “Jim is the 21st Century Henry Ford of the food and catering industry. I knew Jimmy when we were kids. Our fathers were good friends and Jim worked at the family restaurant, Pardini’s, the most popular place in town. He’s the only person I know that can put together a first class six course meal with appetizers, with 24 hour notice, and then honor a subsequent request with a smile; all the while he has scheduled parties of three or four thousand guests. He is one of the most humble, kind and generous people I know.” Jim credits his father for helping to develop an incredible work ethic and his wellknown generosity to the community. He has been involved in organizations too numerous to list, but include being a board member for St. Agnes Foundation, president of California Restaurant Association, and involvement in the Boys & Girls Club and the United Cerebral Palsy Association.
On a more personal note, I went to school with Jimmy and was three years behind him through both grammar and high school. I had the privilege of working with him when I was in Administration and in charge of major events for St. Agnes Medical Center. One event stays planted firmly in my mind, however. I gave a birthday party for my dad on March 3, 1992, for about 50 people and had Jimmy do the catering; it was a great party. On March 11, eight days later, my dad died suddenly. My entire family was both shocked and stunned as he was only 72. One of the first calls I made was to Jimmy and I told him what had happened and that my Mom was going to be deluged with family coming home over for the next few days. I asked him to bring over dinner for 50, starting that very evening, followed by four more days of breakfast, lunch and dinner, followed by a reception for 400 people at my Mom’s house. I will never forget how calm Jimmy was as he told me not to worry because his part was covered. “You just take care of your family and your Mom, and let me handle the rest. Call me if you need anything, and I will see you later this afternoon.” That is the Jimmy Pardini I know! Jim is married to his wife Marie, and is father to four children, Cindi Pardini, Kristi Pardini-Bush, Jimmy Pardini and Jeff Pardini. He is grandfather to Luca Bush, Avila Bush, Preston Pardini, Brooklyn Pardini and one more on the way, coming sometime in October.

Honeymoon Travel Travel Editors Reagan Lowery and Erica Helwick
There are so many honeymoon destinations to choose from, each with a different emotional and stylistic magnetism. The options are endless: relaxing by the beach for days with your loved one, exploring the English countryside, or an adventurous trip to New Zealand or Australia. Personally, I prefer a nice balance of relaxation and exploration, which is why Japan is one of my favorite places to visit. Romance is inevitable here, and it’s the perfect place to build the connection with your partner. What better way to start your lives together than discovering the culture and sensations of a beautiful country? There are so many options in traveling through Japan but your ALTOUR travel specialist will help make it seamless and creative to form memories that will last a lifetime. Our job is to tailor-make a trip that fits your personality and budget, but here are a few personal highlights from my own experiences, as well as a feature of Ritz-Carlton’s “One Journey Two Capitals.”
The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo and The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto are two of my favorite hotels in two of my absolute favorite cities. Tokyo is a city of lights, extreme energy and amazing food. There are multiple hotels to choose from, depending on your personal taste, but The Ritz-Carlton is bold, yet fresh, and sexy, yet understated; it has the right amount of luxury without feeling pretentious. The property is also connected to one of the largest shopping centers in Tokyo, so you have direct access to almost everything you could ask for. As soon as you walk off the elevator to the lobby level on the 45th floor, there is an immediate sense of vibrancy and style. The glass walls afford beautiful views that are mesmerizing, yet distinctively different from daytime to evening. I love the daytime views of coffee, suits and newspapers amidst the hustle of bustle of the city, tourists scurrying out for their adventure for the day and Japanese locals tending to corporate business meetings. Then at night the sun sets and the lights of the city shower the entire lobby with such a glow that is becomes very hard to leave your cocktail at the bar and venture out for your dinner reservation. As far as Tokyo in general, here some of my favorite memories: -Walking around Ginza, Shinjuku, and Shibuya neighborhoods is an experience in and of itself, especially at night. You could easily spend a day in each. Check out Harajuku area which is in Shibuya, and specifically the main street there, Takeshita. Packed with people, a lot of them dressed in more colorful clothing, it is a beautiful peek at the culture of this area.
-Have dinner at the Robot Restaurant. This is a must! You have to have a reservation with which your hotel concierge can assist. The food is just decent, but the hour-long show is an indescribable blend of burlesque, live music, costumes and gigantic robots “fighting” (like Japanese anime come to life!). -The fish market is one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever witnessed. We were at the market before 5 a.m., but it was worth the early start: we saw the auction of tuna to various suppliers, ate scallops out of the shell from a fisherman’s morning catch. People are moving at incredible speeds to make all their deals happen and organize all their products; they hardly know you are there! This is good and bad considering there is seafood being thrown about everywhere! Another warning: be prepared for a sushi and beer breakfast at 7 a.m. -I must admit, I have been to a Cat Café and was more than intrigued… -Definitely go to an area called Roppongi Hills and find the Mori Tower there. The whole place looks like you’re in Blade Runner (you know that movie?), incredibly futuristic with amazing architecture. Mori Tower has great restaurants and shops, but also a super-cool modern art “museum” (not very big, but very interactive and interesting) and an incredible “Sky Deck” on the 54th floor called Tokyo City View (open until midnight) where you can go outside and see all of the city, including the Japanese “Eiffel Tower” ... a fantastic photo spot! -Don’t miss Ueno Park, a big landmark, so it’s easy to find. It’s the ideal place to see cherry blossoms, people outside with picnics, great street food and a beautiful lake.
-Consider Park Hyatt for drinks, which may be a bit of a cliché since it’s the hotel from the movie, Lost in Translation. Don’t let that stop you; the view from the top floor, where the bar/restaurant is located, is amazing with its floor-to-ceiling windows. -And my key for curing jet lag? A dip in the gorgeous pool of The Ritz-Carlton… As part of the Ritz-Carlton “One Journey Two Capitals” package that you can confirm with your ALTOUR agent, we invite you to stay in Tokyo and then venture to the beautiful city of Kyoto. We can escort you to the train station, even to your platform, sending you on your way to your second incredible destination: The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto! This hotel is so special. I have been fortunate enough to enjoy luxurious hotels with my current job but when a property is “special,” then I consider it in a league of its own. The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto is a magical oasis with Zen energy and simple style. As I am sure many of you can relate, I am always on the go and have a hard time really decompressing at times, but the moment that you step into this hotel, all of your worries and stress melt away. It may be the water features that line the pathway to the check-in desk, or it may be the gentle greetings from everyone you come in contact with. Regardless, I was immediately overwhelmed with a sense of happiness and ease. The hotel truly feels like a Japanese home (a cross between a hotel and Ryokan) and you are welcomed as such.
I couldn’t stop smiling when I was in Kyoto … and have you had Italian food in Japan? La Locanda was incredible. It features the coziness of a classic Italian meal, with a twist of Japanese art, and unexpected yet somehow perfect combination. Here are my personal Kyoto highlights (outside of Ritz’s gorgeous spa, of course): -Waking up at the Ritz, overlooking the water bank, and renting a bicycle to discover the city for an entire day. -There are literally dozens of UNESCO World Heritage locations in Kyoto. If you like monuments, you could spend countless hours exploring them. -Learn something new at the amazing Haru Cooking Class! -We loved walking the “Philosopher’s Path,” a stone path through the northern part of Kyoto’s Higashiyama District which follows a canal lined by cherry trees; it begins around Ginkakuji (“Silver Pavilion”) and ends in the neighborhood of Nanzen-ji. -The Kinkakuji Temple (“Golden Pavilion”) and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple (and the cool cobblestone shopping streets leading up to it!) are both ancient, must-see stops. -Explore the Torii Tunnel at Fushimi Inari Shrine with its bright neon orange gates stretching for miles, which you can hike up, as well!
-A day trip to Nara is also delightful. You only need a few hours here, and if you’re able to do any quick side trips, this should definitely be it. -Train trip from Kyoto is only about 35 minutes and there are usually two trains each hour. -This place is magical! There are over 1,000 deer roaming around the entire town, mostly minding their own business. You can buy cheap biscuits from the surrounding vendors so you can feed them — they come right up to you! There’s a huge park in the middle of town where you’ll see the most deer; they are literally everywhere. -Todai-ji Temple has an enormous bronze Buddha and is one of the largest wooden structures in the world. -Kofukuji Temple is exquisite with a five-story pagoda, the second highest in Japan. The options for travel in Japan are endless, but that is what your travel agent is here for! Whether you want to continue to Osaka (known as the beer capital of Japan), see snow monkeys in Jigokudani Yaen Koen, stay in traditional Japanese “ryokans” (traditional Japanese inns that are a very popular bed and breakfast style with intimate accommodations), or just eat some of the most amazing food, from street vendors to Michelin star restaurants, Japan may be the perfect honeymoon getaway for you.
We believe actions speak louder than words.
