Marissa Hermer, most recognized by her appearance in the reality television smash hit, Ladies of London, graces our cover. Creative Director, Donna Kaczmarski, worked with the team to bring this fresh-faced beauty a fun, flirty look for this edition. Marissa graciously opened up her new home, in the Pacific Palisades, for the shoot. The candid conversation can be found on page 38, where she chats about family, career and her new cookbook. Mike Ragan, our resident Interiors Editor, takes us inside one of the most sought after addresses in the world: a palatial penthouse perched high above New York’s famed Fifth Avenue. Celebrity Photographer Growing up as a skater and surfer in sunny Southern California, Jim Jordan spent his high school days scouting models and finding the next great faces of the coming generation. With a passion for beauty and styling, Jim quickly became a highly respected hair and makeup artist, traveling the world and working with the biggest actors, actresses and supermodels of the time, such as Cindy Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Farrah Fawcett. Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst is a Valley legend. She has performed in numerous productions with the Fresno Opera Association, the Fresno Philharmonic, and was a founding member of Good Company Players. She started the Saint Agnes Communications Program in 1980, breathing new life into the Foundation, as well as by spearheading two capital fundraising campaigns. In 1990, she founded her own agency, WSW Associates. Currently, she is working with various national insurance companies in the workers’ compensation field. She keeps herself busy with three sons, William, Winston and Warren, and her beloved dog, Mr. Chips.

GARY YERVAN ... A JEWEL IN FIG GARDEN VILLAGE Features Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst

ary Yervan, owner of The Vault, a jewelry store in Fig Garden Village, is a gem of a man. He was born and raised in Fresno and has a sun sign of Pisces, which fits him to a “T.” Gary believes that everyone should help one another, and each person can contribute to making the world a better place to live in. He is extremely personable and knows so many people by their first name because, for over 30 years, he has cultivated a huge and loyal customer base. On a personal note, Gary has been my favorite jeweler for as long as I can remember. I drop in and look around, or bring him a piece to be fixed, and he is never too busy to take care of whatever my jewelry needs may be. He has a sign on his counter that reads, “Your husband called and said buy whatever you want.” I remember going in a few years ago to pick out something, and I told my late husband what I read on the counter. What husband is going to argue with that? This really shows the warmth and sense of humor he has with his customers, both men and women alike. Gary grew up in Fresno with his first job being assembly of race cars for a hobby shop, which was a good start, as it requires concentration and attention to detail. Graduating from Bullard High, he went on to college. One evening he met the love of his life, Elaine, while having dinner at Pardini’s. He asked for her phone number and called Elaine the next day to ask her on a date. He took her to the movies and they saw John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. They were married about five years later and the “GE” (not General Electric, but it might as well have been) began. Gary and Elaine have both been part of the jewelry business, and their store, The Vault, has been a testament to their motto of “Customer First and Service Excellence.” It is what makes their store unique, interesting and very individually oriented. When you come into their store, they have something for everyone and there is no pressure, which is important. When you explain or look around and something catches your eye (which it will), you can tell Gary what you are looking for and what your price range is, and he will have it for you and take the time to show you all kinds of options available for you. Whether you came in looking for a gift, or something for $200 or $25,000.00, Gary makes you feel important by patiently helping you make your selection, his service catered to your needs.

In interviewing him, Gary told me a great evening for him is to go to dinner, perhaps at Ruth’s Chris and then go dancing with Elaine. He says his friends like him because he is friendly and lovable, and that, many people will testify to. Gary’s favorite party was for New Year’s Eve at his home in 2015, with a guest list that included all kinds of wonderful, diverse people. It was what made the party fun, he said. When asked where he likes to visit, he tells me he loves NYC, the city’s energy, the theater, the opera and the pace, but would not want to live there. “Visiting is just fine when I go to jewelry shows,” he says, and adds that Carmel is more his style. He also shared with this editor that he feels like a frustrated comedienne. Just ask him to do his imitation of former President Bill Clinton and you’re in for a laugh! He stated that he always wished that he could have been taller, yet this man is tall in his personality and his care and concern for each one of his treasured customers. He is a giant to all who have the privilege of knowing him and working with him. Gary loves his staff. Gary says he knows he is in for a laugh when he comes to work and Ashley is working, as she always has a humorous story or a remark for him. He works every day except for Thursday (when I came over to meet up with him) and he loves going to work. His belief is to always tell the truth, and that your integrity is your calling card. He says that he strives to form personal relationships based on caring and excellent service, and the rest naturally falls into place. He and Elaine have been very kind and generous to the community and give to many charitable organizations, but a few that are dear to them are Catholic Charities, Saint Agnes Medical Center Foundation, Make-A-Wish and the Fresno Rescue Mission. His idea for the world to be a better place is, “to just show some compassion and listen,” which Gary personally exemplifies in his professional and personal life.

T

he scope of Interior Designer, Celerie Kemble’s work on this New York Upper East Side apartment was the public areas, the living room, entry and dining room. Having worked with this client before, Celerie characterized this project as “delightful,” and one that “moved with freehand, trust and lots of unspoken understandings.” The entry is a series of strong, contrasting materials: the ornamentation and whimsy of a black carved wood console juxtaposed against the geometries of bright white paneling and an iron chandelier against an opalescent blush pink ceiling dome. The main challenge of the living room and dining area was the sheer size and grandeur of the architecture. The client was primarily concerned with the comfort and functionality of the rooms in terms of her family, with two grade school age children. Initially the living room felt very dark and imposing with darkly stained wood paneling. A fair portion of the wood was removed or covered in mirror, and to offset the inherent and imposing nature of all that, they used the sweet, feminine climb of a floral hand-painted scenic wallpaper.




The dining room is also treated as the family room. There are banquette sofas in each corner with dining tables that can be expanded and joined to the central one. A television is hidden behind curtains between the two banquettes and a fireplace on the adjacent wall makes it seem cozier while “dressed for dinner.” Also, the sweet star patterned wallpaper on the ceiling brings the formality down a notch, while keeping it defined by detail all around. “NYC has so many of the ghost town dining rooms,” Celerie adds, “so we really strive to make them comfortable day and night, for breakfast, homework and hangout.”

Celebrity Hair Guru, Riawna Capri, is getting her nails done in the upstairs unit of her hot spot, 901 Salon. Known for her edgy hair trends on tinsel town’s ones to watch on Instagram, Capri and business partner, Nikki Lee, brought style into the hair care industry. As the creators of the “Braid Bar” phenomenon, you either loved them or envied their ability to bring the millennial cool in hair. Together their salon prides itself on creating a contemporary, inspired atmosphere with the “Hot List” stylists creating jaw dropping hair craze among a wide range of specialty services. Many know Capri for her ear-to-ear smile and cunning celebrity roster. Having given Jennifer Lawrence her pixie, Nina Dobrev the perfect Ombre, and Jules Hough her staple wavey crop, most of Hollywood is sitting in Riawna’s chair for either the most talked about cut or coveted color. Capri has wanted to be a hairdresser since age 16. CVLUX: WHY THE HAIR COLOR CHANGE? HD: Duff explains that she has been waiting a moment to freshen her blonde. Sporting a sandy darker blonde, she wanted to liven up her look by going to a more icy blonde for the spring. Duff has trusted Capri for years with her hair, and she could not do this hair change without her. Duff has never been happier. She wanted her hair color to reflect that Blonde Life! CVLUX: WHAT WAS YOUR TECHNIQUE TO ACHIEVE A TRUE CHANGE IN BLONDE WITH HILARY? RC: “We knew we wanted to keep her bright and definitely on the cooler side. We planned on a bright beige,” says Riawna. She began by foiling Hilary’s entire head, using a combo of weaves and slices. She started from the back and worked her way to the front using both 20 volume and 30 volume developer with Joico’s New Blond Life lightener. In between the foils, she brightened Hilary’s previously highlighted hair by painting the ends with a lightener and a 10 volume. When Capri was done processing and lifting her hair to a pale blond, she did an all over tone using Joico’s Lumishine 9NV, applying it to the roots first for about five minutes and then working her way to the mid-shaft and ends. CVLUX: WHAT DOES LIVING THE BLONDE LIFE MEAN TO YOU? HD: Duff admits being blonde has always been comfortable to her. Her life as a blonde has been her happiest self. The mom and childhood star has had a few drastic color changes here and there, but she has always been a true blonde. “I live that Blonde Life,” Duff admits. T

alking to Marissa Hermer is like talking to a good friend. You instantly feel like your day is brightened when she chats with you, thanks to her genuine personality—personality that’s made her a fan favorite on the Bravo series Ladies of London. You can also ask her about her new cookbook, and then be honest and admit that it inspires you because you aren’t that skilled in the kitchen. “To be honest, I was like you,” Hermer tells me. “I still think I am like you. I’m not a trained cook. I’m not a trained chef. I grew up in Southern California, but I didn’t really cook and I never really cooked for myself. And then when I lived in New York I never really cooked for myself there because…” Hermer stops and asks me if I’m in New York. I am. I get it when she says you don’t need to know how to cook in New York City. “That being said, when I met and married Matt ... I don’t know if it’s that he’s British or if it’s the food he eats, but he likes home cooked meals,” Hermer says. “And I sort of realized I have to get with the program here really quickly. I wanted to play girlfriend, I wanted to play wife and I wanted to make my husband happy with food that he liked to cook.” This, Hermer elaborates, is how the idea for her cookbook, An American Girl in London, was born. “I certainly didn’t grow up making Shepherd’s Pie or any of those traditional dishes,” she reveals. “I didn’t know how to cook these things he grew up eating. So the idea behind the book is I learned all this British food. And my meat and potatoes have made Matt very happy, but I missed the food that I’d grown up with, as well.” That food, for a girl who grew up in Southern California, was a lot of “flavored, lighter fare,” such as avocados. “I started mixing some of that into the British comfort food cuisine that my husband liked … I ended up cooking quite a lot,” she explains. For Hermer, cooking has become something more than a pastime and a business venture. It’s become a passion, and something that, in a sense, has saved her. “I had a difficult pregnancy with my last child and I was on bed rest/house arrest a lot,” she tells me. “And so we had a lot of dinners at home, and I felt like I needed to satisfy my maternal urges. I wanted to be a better mom to my boys. I wasn’t able to run around with them at the park, or take them to birthday parties, or drop them off at school, or any of that. Where I couldn’t razzle dazzle them on the playground, I could make them a really nice cozy meal.” Is there anything she’s particularly proud of making that her children are willing to eat that they didn’t before? “A veggie curry,” she answers after much thought. “My kids are pretty good. They have a fairly advanced palate. That said, if they get pizza and there’s green on it, they freak out.” The American-born entrepreneur, married to London restaurateur, Matt Hermer, is currently making her home in sunny California with her three children: Max, 5, Jake, 2, and Sadie, 8 months. Although Hermer considers her family “bicontinental,” she also considers them home in the simplest way.

“Ultimately, home is wherever my family is. We moved to LA right after Christmas, then I went to New York for a few days for work without the kids and without Matt, and when I was getting on the plane from JFK to LAX, I had that feeling of going home. Although California in general doesn’t feel like home, wherever my husband is and where my kids are makes me feel very comfortable and confident.” When Hermer isn’t whipping up the best meals in the kitchen or being a mother, she’s putting her life in the public eye as one of the six Ladies of London, a reality show that follows a group of women living in the UK as they balance business, family and their personal lives. “It’s crazy because I never thought I’d film a reality television show,” says Hermer, who attended Middlebury College in Vermont and got her start in public relations. “The fact that we’re even having this conversation now is crazy. But it’s fun.” After moving to New York to work for fashion and luxury brands, Hermer reconnected with the man who would later become her husband. They married shortly after moving back to London in 2008. “I used to be pretty anonymous at some level,” says Hermer of skyrocketing to fame with Ladies of London. “But it was more the clientele of our places that were famous. And since coming into this world, my skin has gotten a lot thicker. I still have the same friends, I still go to the same places; none of that has changed. But I was always a people pleaser, and I think that has changed. I think because suddenly the whole world had an opinion about what I was doing and who I was ... you can’t please everyone.” Currently, Hermer is waiting to hear if the show will be returning for a fourth season. Regardless of whether it does or not, she considers her friendships with the other women in Ladies of London to be long-lasting. “I’m incredibly close with all the girls, even the ones who are no longer a part of the series,” she says. “I just spoke to Annabelle [Neilson] a couple of days ago. I was on the phone with Julie Montagu this morning already. I speak to Sophie [Stanbury] weekly.” To an extent, it’s this bond that’s a part of what makes it hard to adjust to living in another country. “When we first moved here, I was like, get me back to London immediately!” Hermer laughs. “Which is crazy, because I grew up in Newport Beach. I’ve just been abroad for a very long time, so coming home I have experienced a bit of culture shock. Even though London does feel like home, I feel like I’m sort of living an adventure in California.” “Living an adventure” is a good way to describe Hermer’s life, an up and down trajectory of luck, success, and some truly scary experiences that put her life in perspective. While pregnant with her daughter, Hermer developed placenta accreta, an anomaly where the placenta grows too closely to the uterine wall. The rare condition required her to deliver at only 34 weeks via Caesarian, as well as undergo a hysterectomy. Couple that stress with moving from London back to California, and it’s no wonder Hermer had a hard time adjusting, even to somewhere she was already familiar with.

“We sort of emmigrated around the world with three young children to a new house. The jetlag was hell on earth, and getting the children into school here, and getting them to restart their lives in a new place hasn’t been easy the last couple of months,” she says. “Matt was very much beside me during my pregnancy, and I don’t think we give our partners enough credit when we go through something. I can’t even begin to imagine being told several times that his wife wasn’t going to make it. Matt has been through the ringer.” But as is a trademark of her personality, Hermer remains positive and optimistic. Her daughter is currently healthy and happy, her children are enjoying the sunshine, and Hermer is settling in California. She’s taking on new projects, entertaining friends—and yes, she’s obviously cooking. “I’ve just generally been a positive person,” she explains. “That’s just how I was built.” Always, though? “A couple times in the last couple of months, I was like, ‘what are we doing, Matt? This is crazy!’ We left a great life, I’m working my butt off like a maniac with work, trying to get the kids acclimated, and I’ve definitely spent the last couple of months saying, ‘ugh this is so difficult,’” she admits. “And then someone told me that there’s this thing called ‘The 30 Days Of Not Complaining,’” she explains. “It’s how you view things. It’s just taking a different view of it. So I can either look at my health and medical issues with Sadie as, ‘how the hell was I so unlucky to get this very, very rare pregnancy condition, and it’s awful that my family was put through this and it was very scary.’ Or we can look at it as, ‘oh my goodness, I learned so much about myself for being put through this and having gone through this experience.’ We are in LA, I am closer to my family, I am in the sunshine and the kids are really happy. All of these things have come about because of something difficult we went through. There is always a silver lining to every cloud. You don’t always see it at the time, but it is a good reminder.” And now that things have settled down on the home front, the Ladies of London star can focus on some new ventures. To say she’s excited about them would be an understatement.

“Matt and I have three young children, which is our priority, and we spend a lot of time with them and that’s so important,” she tells me, adding that, in order for her to take on a new project, it has to be “totally organic.” “They have to make sense to me,” she explains. “I’ve had a lot of people push me to get involved in different things that just don’t make sense, or aren’t in my wheelhouse. I have to be able to want to leave the kids. It has to be good enough for me to not be on the playground with my children. I’m working on a jewelry collection right now, and I’m not a jewelry designer. I don’t know anything about jewelry, and suddenly, I’m back in school again, and learning all of these things I didn’t know anything about.” Hermer’s excitement for creativity and her optimistic outlook intrigues me, so I decide to ask her some lighter questions. Guilty pleasure? “I feel like everything I do is guilty,” Hermer laughs, before telling me, “I love sitting on the couch with ice cream. I discovered California Sweet Road ice cream, and we go through a lot of those.” The perfect meal that makes her feel like she’s home, no matter where she’s living? “Lasagna,” she says without hesitation. Three people she’d drop everything to meet, if given the chance? “I love the writer Elizabeth Gilbert, and I love her books on relationships,” Hermer says. “I was reading Eat Pray Love, actually, when I met my husband. I think probably Bill Clinton—I mean, I have met him a couple of times. And Barack Obama.” And what would she tell herself ten years ago, if she could look ahead to the future and see where she is now? For this question, Hermer is (unsurprisingly) thoughtful, honest, and reflective. “I didn’t really imagine anything,” she admits. “I’m not really a forward thinker. I think life happens in different ways, and you never know which way it’s going to go. So you hang on for the ride, because that’s what happened. And you take opportunities even if it seems crazy, because so many wonderful things come out of it. And I’ll tell myself that for my next ten years, too.”

Stopping the Stigma An Interview with Zelda Williams

M

ay is CVLUX Magazine’s Beauty issue, but more importantly, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and there was no better way to discuss the importance of ending the stigma against Mental Health than by meeting up with Zelda Williams, Robin Williams daughter, at the Hope and Grace Initiative Luncheon. Zelda, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2015, talked about her late father, Robin Williams, but she also spoke about the importance of talking about mental health issues and how to deal with them. “Her father was vocal in both his comedy and his life about his battle with depression and addiction, and Zelda says that it was important for him to speak out about his struggles,” Entertainment Tonight said.

Now Zelda is partnering up with Philosophy Skin Care’s Hope and Grace Initiative to further discuss the stigma on mental health, and how we can combat that stigma. The Hope and Grace Initiative represents an unprecedented and unending commitment by Philosophy Skin Care to support mental health and well-being. Mental health issues are one of the greatest challenges women face. More than 450 million people worldwide suffer from mild to serious mental health issues—such as post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, self–esteem and financial stress—all of which disproportionately affect women around the world, and one in five people live with mental issues, Philosophy says. The Initiative gives 1% of all Philosophy USA net product sales to support community-based mental health efforts. Every May for the past three years now, Philosophy Skin Care lights the Empire State Building with green lights to kick off Mental Health Month. This year their initiative Public Speaking Announcement is focused on “how are you?” This daily conversational question is the first step to start a bigger discussion. Philosophy’s Hope and Grace Initiative believe that in asking, “how are you?” and meaning it, lives can be changed. All it takes is one small act of grace. Zelda Williams once said, “Healing starts with healing your mind. Those who suffer should seek help. Mental illness is often misunderstood and misrepresented, but that’s starting to change.” CVLUX caught up with Zelda Williams at the Hope and Grace Initiative Luncheon last May and found out ways one can break the stigma. This proactive young director told us, “First, know the facts of mental illness; educate yourself about mental health problems. It is important to be aware of your attitudes and behavior. Stigma can be prejudices and judging, which further hurt their mental wellbeing.” Zelda Williams is the perfect reflection of a mental health advocate. After losing her father to mental illness, she promised to speak out and help others in need. We must all remember to choose words carefully, educate others, focus on the positive, and support people. By doing this, we all can make the world a better place.

The consideration to remove a wrinkle or improve a simple stretch mark crosses our minds daily, maybe even hourly, when we look in a mirror or get ready for a special occasion. In the past, we have trusted beauty industry remedies and every over-the-counter product we could get out hands on to get rid of everything from cellulite to crow’s feet. No matter the special serum, new formula or solution, these preparations don’t do the trick, failing to give us that instant gratification we are all looking for. Now you can take a quick trip to your local dermatologist or medical spa and get any sort of beauty makeover. Most are getting a simple injection on their lunch breaks, unwanted leg hair removed on the way home from work, or a simple lipo procedure on a “personal day” off from work. To get the most realistic approximation of what a patient might look like post-op, they need to see the potential changes on their own body. Fortunately, with my state-of-theart VECTRA XT 3D computer simulator, I will take the patient’s photo and I will be able to “morph” or change their nose, face, breasts, body or buttock into the shape that I feel I can realistically achieve through surgery. This helps take the guesswork out of surgery.
