LETTER from the
EDITOR
I
have always enjoyed this time of year. I’m not sure what it is about the holiday season. Maybe it’s the change in weather, the festive decorations, or anticipation of the inevitable indulgence in retail therapy and gift-giving. Whatever it is, each year seems to bring its own special nuances and memorable experiences. Within this issue we tried to capture the spirit and unique energy of the 2016 holiday season. One of my favorite articles can be found on page 48. Once again our Lifestyle Editor, Pandora Vanderpump-Sabo, gives us a glimpse of what it takes to make a memorable holiday soirée that you won’t want to miss. Included in this luscious spread is a plethora of delectable recipes and effortlessly-elegant decorating tips to take your holiday bash to the next level. You can see more of what Pandora has to offer by visiting our website at www. cvlux.com and perusing the extended content. Featured on the cover of this edition is the multi-talented, Bellamy Young, from the hit ABC show Scandal. Bellamy was a delight to work with on set. Once again, photographer, Jim Jordan, expertly captured the beautiful actress and singer, in a way I’m sure you’ll agree connotes the holiday spirit with vivid red, emerald and gold tones. You can find the story on page 42. While you turn the pages of this edition, please remember to take some time to vote for this year’s Luxury Awards. Visit www.cvlux.com to cast your vote. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Saint Agnes Holy Cross Center For Women. The Awards are set for January 20, 2017 at TorNino’s Banquets, and is sure to be the event of the season. Once you finish voting, be sure to purchase your ticket or table online. The event is already filling up and space is limited. I have to once more thank all of our clients and readers for supporting us over the last three years. We have so much to celebrate as we embark on 2017. And remember to follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter online. Cheers and Happy Holidays,

Scott Barnes Makeup Artist
Scott Barnes is a celebrated makeup artist and innovator within the cosmetics industry. He arrived in New York City in 1984, determined to fulfill his dreams as a fine-arts painter. After attending New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design, Scott began assisting on fashion photography shoots and quickly became one of the most sought-after makeup artists in the industry. International beauty guru, Shu Uemura, selected Scott to revamp his Atelier Made line, which became a huge success within the fashion industry and among celebrities. Following his success at Shu Uemura, Scott launched his own 21-piece color cosmetic line, Scott Barnes Cosmetics, on QVC in April 2004. Five months later, Scott introduced 130 products in high-end specialty boutiques in Canada and the United States. A year later, the collection launched in Europe and Australia and became an overnight success for which Women’s Wear Daily named him “Newcomer of the Year.” He was also a finalist for the Fashion Group International’s “Rising Star” award. Scott Barnes has worked with world-renowned photographers, including Patrick Demarchelier, Scavullo, Gilles Bensimon, Tony Duran, Peter Lindbergh, Annie Leibovitz, Ruven Afanador, and Mark Seliger, with his work gracing the covers of such leading magazines as Allure, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and Marie Claire. Scott has also appeared on top national and regional television programs, such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, Extra, Access Hollywood and Good Day L.A. Although Scott has worked with a variety of Hollywood talent over the years, including Kate Hudson, Nicole Ritchie, Mary J. Blige, Gwyneth Paltrow and Celine Dion, it’s his work with Jennifer Lopez that birthed the new monochromatic look featuring bronzed skin and pale lips. Described as “The Glow,” this signature look became known as “lit from within” and helped launch Scott’s best-selling beauty product, Body Bling Bronzer. In addition to numerous ad campaigns and music videos, Scott’s work on set includes such films as El Cantante, which earned him Oscar consideration. Scott was also responsible for Jennifer Lopez’s memorable Cinderella moments in Maid in Manhattan.

As always, the event turned out an amazing day of fashion and style. Zoey Deutch took the theme to heart in a chic floor-length Dior dress with galloping horses in the detailing, while Michelle Monaghan attended in a Pretty Woman-esque Chanel polka dot dress. During the unforgettable afternoon, Rachel Zoe taught her youngest how to stomp divots, while Mandy Moore chatted with Isla Fisher and hung out with her This is Us costars. Kristin Bell was excited to catch up with her friend, Matt Bomer, while Vanessa Hudgens enjoyed a Veuve Clicquot Rich cocktail as she cheered on the match, which took place against the beautiful backdrop of the California hillside landscape. Spectators watched world-renowned polo player, Nacho Figueras, of team Black Watch take on team Veuve Clicquot for an exciting and action packed match. Nacho’s wife, Delfina Blaquier, played alongside Nacho on team Black Watch and was awarded MVP of the game, leading her team to a 10-8 victory. White is the new Red by Michelle Peranich
Looking back at past holidays and traditions, I noticed each year had a color and a theme. Crimson reds, azure blues and emerald greens. But this season, what I was attracted to most was a palette of white ... visual, as well as taste! White has endless possibilities; you never know how far it will take you. This year I chose an elegant but contemporary look. I grew up with a noble pine tree, standing at minimum six feet tall. Here I chose an umbrella pine; this works well if space is limited. The Victoria ghost chairs designed by Philippe Starck give a sense of harmony and grace that embraces other elements.
“To create happiness with less Expensive caviars are not priced by taste, but rarity. The best-tasting caviar is up to you. Rather than the expected blini or toast point, the delicate texture and flavor of white polenta is a perfect host for your favorite caviar. To some, truffle and scallops may be intimidating, but it is quite the contrary. This is an elegant and impressive dish that anyone can create, and for the home cook it’s entirely doable, in addition to being memorable for the guest.
In this modern day of food exploration, think of how fun it would be to share an old family cookie recipe with your friends and family. Cookies are a wonderful way to share your tradition, creating memories that can be enjoyed by generations to come.
Happy holidays!

ellamy Young would be a perfect cover story for any issue of CVLUX. After all, she’s won a Critics’ Choice Award for her role as Mellie Grant on Scandal, her debut album, Far Away So Close, showcases a mountain of musical talent and she’s repeatedly being seen in the media for her activism. But Bellamy is a particularly perfect interview subject as we head into the holiday season. While reflecting upon her varied experiences in both life and entertainment, Bellamy genuinely couldn’t stop being thankful. Raised in Asheville, North Carolina by adoptive parents, Bellamy was first introduced to the life of performing as a way to connect with the birth mother she never met. “One of the little things we thought we knew is that my birth mother loved to sing,” Bellamy remembers. “My mom always gave me opportunities to sing at school, at church, at pageants…”
This compassionate act in and of itself shows the love-filled environment that nurtured a young Bellamy. Instead of cloaking her origins in secret, or trying to mold Bellamy in the shape of her adoptive family, her mother decided to embrace the place from which Bellamy came. And the result? “I loved it,” Bellamy gushes. “It was always a real solace and haven for me.” Once her love of singing was firmly in place, Bellamy went off to a very prestigious college. “I picked Yale because I knew they had this thriving singing group scene, and I wanted to study physics; I thought I could do both at once.” But things didn’t go exactly as planned. “Turns out…I was not good at physics on the world’s stage,” Bellamy laughs, recalling the end of her scientific ambitions. “But I sang, then I started with theatre, and wound up with an English and Drama double major.” She’s not being braggadocious at all, but it certainly would throw anyone for a loop to not only change career aspirations, but to then excel in a new field you never intended to enter. The fact that Bellamy fell into theater and then became so successful at it she was able to make a life doing it? Pretty impressive stuff. Studying drama is risky, of course; it’s the kind of choice that has made generations of relatives bat an eye while making small talk over turkey and stuffing. But Bellamy avoided the trap of waitressing into which many new performers fall, finding work as an actor right out of college. “My first job was a national tour of Meet Me in St. Louis,” Bellamy remembers. “It was the best thing in the world, getting paid to see the country and sing and act.” While reflecting, Bellamy can’t help but inject some of her signature gratitude. “From then on, it’s been such a gift, this career. I love every day of what I get to do.” And she’s certainly done a lot. She could be seen on Broadway in award-winning shows like The Life, Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, and Randy Newman’s Faust. She’s appeared as a guest on over 30 television shows, including The X Files, ER, Frasier, and in what would prove to be critical for her career years later—both Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Young was in a number of films, too, including the 2002 war epic We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson. Though she had been working for years, Bellamy is the first to say that she wasn’t a famous actress by any means. cvlux.com @cv_luxury

“I was 39, [and] many people would not consider the career I had built one to marvel at by any measure.” But she was happy with the work, she tells us. “You build your life one day at a time and keep going to auditions and you keep doing the recurring jobs, and you keep giving what you have to give and hopefully someone’s watching.”
“I had a lot of our gladiators start to push me about making an album,” she says, “and it had been a dream of mine since I was a person who could dream, but I felt a bit of a fraud because I wasn’t writing music.” Bellamy avoided recording an album in the past because she didn’t write her own music, and to her it didn’t feel like the genuine thing to do.
And someone was watching. That someone? Linda Lowy, the casting director for Shonda Rhimes’ hit shows Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. In 2012 Lowy was looking to cast the First Lady in Rhimes’ new pilot, Scandal. Lowy remembered Bellamy from previous roles. The role had only two lines of dialogue in the pilot episode, but Bellamy was thrilled.
“As a Southerner and as an adoptee, I am so often thinking through someone else’s lens,” Bellamy reflects. “‘Am I doing it right?’ ‘Am I what they want?’ and that’s never a place either of personal peace or of strength.”
“Mellie Grant is the role of a lifetime,” she says of her being cast by Rhimes. After filming the pilot, ABC decided to air a season of Scandal. A meeting at the beginning of that first season served as a sobering reminder that the character of Mellie Grant was originally intended to be short-lived. “Shonda was going around the table telling everyone their story for the season,” says Bellamy. “[Shonda] said ‘you’re going to be here for three episodes,’... and I died inside because I thought, ‘these people are so wonderful I just wanna be here forever!’” Many actors might panic at such a great opportunity with so clear an ending date. But after years of performing in theater, television and film, Bellamy simply did what she’d always done. She acted her heart out, really giving herself to the character of Mellie and to the material that the writers created. “The only thing that I’ve gleaned over all these years is that your only power is that your story is your own, and to bring your lens, that specific truth is what makes it universal,” Bellamy advises. “The more honest you can be with your truth, with yourself, the more universal your art can become.” And Bellamy’s particular lens certainly struck a chord with both writers and fans of Scandal. Originally brought on for only a few episodes, Bellamy was made a series regular before the second season. “It was a slow burn and really delicious every step of the way,” Bellamy tells us. The fervor that Scandal has created brought Bellamy into millions of households, and it also brought her back to her original love: singing. There was a Scandal-themed day at Dodger Stadium, and naturally Bellamy was picked to sing the National Anthem. A knockout performance (seriously, check it out on YouTube) served as a call to arms for friends, family and fans.
Instead, Bellamy decided to approach the album in the most Bellamy way possible. Alexandra Patsavas of Chop Shop Music, the music supervisor for Scandal, led Bellamy to producer, Brad Wood, and the two picked songs Bellamy already knew and loved. “We picked songs that are a little sad, and a little down, and a little bit about death,” Bellamy says with a laugh, “and I am so proud of this album.” Covering songs by artists as varied as Ryan Adams and Pink, Far Away So Close is a testament to Bellamy Young’s love of singing for singing’s sake. “It’s almost more than I can take in,” she says, “it’s such a gift.” The only thing that might make the gracious Bellamy Young not seem like a perfect interview during the indulgent holiday season? Since 1988, the actress has embraced a vegan lifestyle. “It’s not a pretty word, vegan; I wish they’d branded it better. It feels like it has to be punitive but it doesn’t!” After listing favorite dishes that include a veganized version of her mother’s biscuits and sausage gravy, chocolate mousse, and a multitude of Thanksgiving sides, we at CVLUX think she might be right. But Bellamy makes it clear that she didn’t start out as an animal activist. “I was a sophomore at Yale, I had grown up not thinking about things, and I ordered a baked breast of chicken. They plated it sort of awkwardly and as I lowered it down to my tray it looked just like the little, yippy dog my mom had when it rolled over and wanted you to pet its tummy.” In an instant, Bellamy decided to stop eating meat. “I’ve loved where that strange little moment in the dining hall has taken me. I get to lead a life that honors life.” From changing majors, to trying acting, to embracing the hard work that a life of performing requires, to throwing herself into the role of a lifetime, Bellamy Young has entered each phase of her life with equal parts guts and gratitude. We’re planning on following her example as we navigate these festive and stressful winter months. And we’re definitely planning on asking Bellamy’s mom for that biscuit recipe.

Elegant Touches for Gorgeous Holiday Tablescapes Unique Place Settings. I love adding special touches to my holiday table; it makes guests feel welcomed and draws their attention to the beauty of the table. One easy way to do this is to wrap a small gift for each guest and place it on their plate. Use glittering boxes or bows in silver and gold so that the present matches the rest of the décor. Another way is to use tiny crystal frames with your guests’ names in them instead of place cards—it brings sparkle to the table and makes your friends feel spoiled! Mix & Match. One of my favorite ways to give the table a feeling of depth and interest is to mix and match my plates. I love the combination of gold, silver and glass. The silver and glass frosts the table and makes it feel special and elegant, while the gold adds warmth and a touch of color. You don’t have to have matching dinner and salad plates; mixing and matching, as long as they’re complementary, is a fun way to make your table unusual and beautiful. Embellished Runners. If you have a beautiful dining table, try using a runner instead of a tablecloth. There are some stunning embellished ones available with crystals or beads, and they’re the perfect backdrop for your candles and flowers!

Glittering Fabric. I always head to the fabric store before the holiday season and pick up a few yards of glittering silver, gold and bejeweled fabrics. It’s usually relatively inexpensive to buy half a yard of each fabric and it let’s you add a lot of variety to your table. Don’t worry about frayed edges; just tuck them under when you arrange the fabric around your center vase to give a very special, polished feel to your floral centerpiece. Ornament Accents. Don’t limit ornaments to the tree! I love to use them on my tablescapes too—either place them around your vases, lean them against a glass, or use them as décor atop your napkins. Another fun way to make your table festive is to hang silver or gold ornaments from your light or chandelier. Use very thin, clear fishing wire and hang them at varying lengths over the table. It’s an easy way to create stunning visuals!
The Perfect Guest: Hostess Gifts Invited to a million cocktail parties and festive feasts this season? Don’t show up empty handed, but make sure your gift isn’t accidentally an unwelcome inconvenience. No matter how appreciative, no host wants to stop in the middle of meal prep to find a vase for flowers! Here are some of my favorite ways to show the host how much you care, without accidentally making more work for them! Fabulous Arranged Flowers. Bringing florals that require no work on the host’s part is always welcome. I love to add flower oasis to a vase and place it into a beautiful basket, and then arrange flowers in the oasis. Even if you buy an arrangement and simply place it in a basket, the basket makes it easy to transport for both you and the host, and it’s an unusual twist on a classic gift. Opt for colors that are neutral and can match any décor: gold and silver with white roses is always a safe option. Accent the flowers with sweet festive bows and holiday ornaments for a special touch! Tiny Frames. This is one of my favorite hostess gifts as, surprisingly, not many people have them. Find a set of adorable tiny or crystal frames that the host can use for place settings. If you know who’s coming to dinner, you could even write the guest’s names in for them, so they can be used immediately. Elegant Bites. This only works if you choose something that won’t conflict with what the host is making or if you’ve checked in with the host prior. However, if you pick something simple and sweet (like my favorite Chocolate Dipped Oranges) you can’t go wrong. Complementary snacks like spiced nuts in a gorgeous container, an elegant box of chocolates, or even a fabulous cheese board, can be extremely appreciated by a flustered, overworked host! Unique Candles. These are perfect gifts that require no work. I like to find oversized candles with dried fruit and flowers pressed into them. They make for amazing centerpieces and are always unique. Have it wrapped in clear plastic with a beautiful bow and your host will love you! Booze. Let’s be honest, everyone appreciates extra alcohol at a party! Keep it simple, but make it classy: find a beautiful velvet bag for your champagne, tie some mulling spices to the neck of your wine, or even bring some crystal tumblers with your scotch.

Tis the Season… for Elegant Nibbles & Decadent Delights! Quick, easy and elegant passed Hors d’Oeuvres for all your cocktail parties this holiday season! I love these little nibbles for any soirée, especially New Year’s Eve! They are easy to pick up, light and always crowd pleasers. As they’re not traditional holiday fare (so they can take you through the entire holiday season!), I like to serve them on festively-decorated trays—try adding ornaments or glitter-edged roses to your serving pieces! Ahi Tuna Tartare in Mini Filo Baskets Tuna tartare is such an elegant appetizer to serve at holiday parties; it’s quick and easy to make, not too heavy, and tastes delicious with champagne. Make sure to get very good quality sashimi grade tuna. Ingredients (makes 6 baskets) Mini filo shells (thawed) ½ lb raw sashimi grade Ahi tuna, cut into small cubes 3 green onions, chopped finely 1 tsp sesame seeds 2 tsp sesame oil 1 - 2 tsp Sriracha, depending on taste 1 tsp soy sauce Thinly sliced green onions, black pepper, chili flakes and lemon wedges to garnish Preparation 1. In a large bowl, combine the Ahi tuna, chopped green onions, sesame seeds, sesame oil, Sriracha and soy sauce. Taste and add more soy sauce or Sriracha as necessary. 2. Place the thawed Filo shells onto a gorgeous tray. 3. Gently fill each shell with tuna tartare. 4. Garnish with sliced green onions, chili flakes and black pepper. 5. Serve with a lemon wedge on the side!
Fresh Crab, Crème Fraîche & Scallion Toasts There’s nothing better than sweet fresh crab with bright, savory Crème Fraîche and vibrant green onions … serve it on some tiny crunchy toasts and you’ll be snacking on these all night. Make the crab mixture and keep it in the fridge—then you can quickly make more throughout the night as they disappear! Ingredients (makes 12-15 toasts) 6 oz of fresh lump or snow crab 2 tbsp Crème Fraîche ¼ lemon 1 tsp chili flakes 2-3 green onions or scallions, thinly sliced Black pepper and salt to taste Petits Toasts Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
52
cvlux.com @cv_luxury
In a large bowl, squeeze the lemon and combine with the crab, Crème Fraîche, chili flakes, salt and pepper. Mix with a fork until the crab is broken up. Add more Crème Fraîche if you’d like it a little creamier—personally I find it looks and handles better with less! Taste and add more salt and pepper if necessary. Spoon the mixture onto the toasts and serve on a gorgeous tray. Garnish with black pepper and more green onion.
White Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna on Cucumber These appetizers are so scrumptious that it’s hard for me not to serve them at every event I have. They are surprisingly quick to make, with rich flavor and a delightfully crunchy crust. Perfect for those who want to avoid overly-filling carbs at every holiday gathering! Ingredients (Makes 6 pieces) 1 sashimi grade Ahi tuna steak (about 4 oz), washed and dried 2 tbsp white sesame seeds 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 lemon wedge 1 tsp chili flakes Olive oil Black pepper Flake salt Fresh thyme leaves 1 Persian cucumber, sliced diagonally into 6 slices Preparation In a small bowl, squeeze the lemon wedge and combine with the chili flakes and soy sauce. 2. Marinate the tuna steak for a few minutes. 3. Place the sesame seeds on a plate. Remove the tuna from the marinade and dip into the sesame seeds until fully coated in seeds. 4. Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. 5. When hot, sear the tuna steak for about 2 minutes a side, until the sesame seeds are toasted and golden brown. The tuna should be rare in the middle, so don’t overcook! Don’t forget to sear the ends slightly as well. 6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. 7. Cut the tuna diagonally, with the grain, into 6 small slices. 8. Season each slice with a touch of black pepper and some flake salt. 9. Place your cucumber slices on a small tray and top each one with a slice of tuna. 10. Garnish with a thyme leaf. 1.

Chocolate Dipped Satsumas with Flake Salt These are a holiday essential! Bursting with festive flavor, these are perfect to set out at the beginning of the night or to serve with hot chocolate and brandy as the evening winds down. The combination of flake salt, tart orange and rich chocolate is Christmasy, decadent and addictive! (These are one of my favorite hostess gifts, too— they last for two days in an airtight container in the fridge!) Ingredients Small Satsuma or Clementine orange (any small sweet orange will do!) Semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips (½ cup for about 5 oranges) Sea salt or flake salt Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl (microwave for 20 seconds, stir, repeat for 15 seconds, stir and repeat if necessary). Peel the oranges and take off any white pith. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dip each orange slice halfway into the chocolate. Place on the parchment paper. Sprinkle each slice with salt. Repeat for all the slices. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or until the chocolate is hard. Remove and place on a tray!
Deliciously Festive Cocktails Spiced Simple Syrup This is one of my favorite things to make during the holiday season as it can be used in so many different ways. It’s a quick recipe that makes your house smell delicious! Use this in cocktails instead of simple syrup or drizzle over cookies as a glaze. I’ve even used it in dressings and sauces! Ingredients 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 2 tbsp mulling spices 1 tsp cinnamon Orange peel 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
54
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Allow to boil for 30 seconds until sugar dissolves, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes (more if you’d like it thicker), and then allow to cool. Strain the liquid into an airtight container and cool. Store in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks.

Here are two of my favorite festive cocktails to make with this delicious syrup! Spiced Champagne Cocktail with Fresh Rosemary Everybody loves a glass of Bubbly during the holiday season! Why not spice yours up (literally!) and add a little festive flair? This simple cocktail is the perfect way to add a touch of the cozy holiday feeling to your celebratory drink. The fresh rosemary not only smells divine, but looks beautiful in the glass, too! Ingredients Champagne Spiced simple syrup Fresh rosemary Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Set out your champagne flutes on a beautiful tray. Delicately add about a teaspoon (or more, to taste!) of spiced simple syrup to the bottom of each glass. Slowly fill each glass with champagne until about half way full. With a straw, stir the simple syrup into the champagne (be careful, as it fizzes!). Once combined, top with more champagne until full and stir once. Add a sprig of rosemary to each glass.
Spiced Cranberry & Thyme Martini This cocktail is a holiday dream. Who doesn’t love the combination of sweet spices, fresh herbs and tart cranberries? It’s an easy cocktail that is reminiscent of decadent holiday feasts, while staying light, bright and easy to drink! Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail) 1 ½ oz cranberry juice 1 ½ oz vodka 1 ½ oz spiced simple syrup ¼ lemon 2 fresh thyme sprigs Fresh thyme or cranberries to garnish Ice Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Fill a shaker with ice. Add the cranberry juice, vodka, fresh thyme sprigs and spiced simple syrup. Squeeze in the lemon wedge. Shake to combine. With a straw, taste to see if it’s sweet enough. If not, add more simple syrup and shake again. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a sprig of thyme or a cocktail skewer of fresh cranberries.

CVLUX: Can you describe yourself in a few sentences? Randy: I was born in Fresno on August 25, 1977. I’m a very positive Virgo. I try to do everything to perfection, am very practical and not afraid of hard work, sticking with it until it is finished. I am a very busy person and I know how to arrange and organize things. My friends and family can depend on and trust me. In addition, I have a very keen interest in the arts, especially photography. CVLUX: What is your occupation? Randy: I’m the owner/Partner of Haron Jaguar Land Rover in Fresno. I’ve been in the automotive industry for 23 years. I sit on the National Retailer Cabinet for Jaguar Land Rover. CVLUX: What is your favorite hobby? Randy: Photography. I enjoy capturing a memory or seeing things from a different perspective. It’s very relaxing, and a complete departure from my day-today work. I have almost 70K followers on Instagram and you can find me there at @2ndfloorguy. CVLUX: What is your marital status? Randy: Currently, I’m prospecting! CVLUX: What was your first job? Randy: At 15, I got a job as a janitor/car washer. I worked after school and on the weekends, and learned very quickly the value of hard work and dedication to my job. CVLUX: What’s a book you’ve been recommending lately? Randy: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. CVLUX: What are your favorite restaurants? Randy: I enjoy Campagnia, Five, Pismo’s and Shabu-Shabu at Yoshino’s. CVLUX: What is your favorite “pig-out” food? Randy: Ice cream. Ben and Jerry’s is my favorite. There is something about coffee ice cream that is so addicting. Locally, I go to Cold Stone. CVLUX: What is your favorite game? Randy: Golf. I enjoy the game and its high level of difficulty. I was the Club Champion at Fort Washington in Fresno a few years ago. CVLUX: What is your most valued material possession? Randy: My camera; it’s the gift that keeps on giving! CVLUX: What is your worst habit? Randy: Some would say “hyper-focusing.” I fixate on new goals until they are accomplished.
CVLUX: What is your favorite city outside California, and why? Randy: New York. I have great memories there, and I appreciate the inspiration that I get when I drive into the city. CVLUX: What is your favorite fast food? Randy: I’m a sucker for McDonald’s French fries and chicken nuggets. CVLUX: What was the last goal you accomplished? Randy: Displaying my photography inside Kjwl’s studio. CVLUX: What are your favorite pizza ingredients? Randy: Lots of cheese and meats. CVLUX: Who is the one person you’d say has had the biggest impact on your life? Randy: My Uncle. From the time I was young, I looked up to him and followed his advice in many areas. CVLUX: What is your best asset? Randy: I enjoy people, and am genuinely interested in their lives. CVLUX: What is your worst regret? Randy: I wouldn’t be where I am today without there having been several bumps in the road. I’ve learned that it’s not making mistakes or failing that’s a problem; it’s how you handle them. I’ve become skilled at handling stressful situations. CVLUX: What is something about you that nobody knows? Randy: I can cook, and I’m thinking about taking that up as my next hobby. I tend to accomplish a goal in a certain area and move on from it to something else. Plus, everyone loves food! CVLUX: What’s one thing you cannot stand? Randy: I struggle with seeing someone give up when they are so capable. You have to believe before you can achieve! CVLUX: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would that be? Randy: I would make more time for myself. I tend to put the needs of others first. CVLUX: Finish this sentence: “People who knew me in college would say that I was….” Randy: Very focused on my goals. And that hasn’t changed!
CVLUX: What is the best party you’ve ever given? Randy: My 30th birthday party was pretty awesome! Seeing all my friends and family was great, and we had a wonderful time. But 40 is around the corner, so there is a chance to surpass it!
CVLUX: What was the most difficult time in your life? Randy: There have been many, but I would say the most difficult was the economic crisis in 2008/2009. It was a very difficult time to navigate as the economy was crashing and employees and their families were counting on us for their livelihood. We made it through, but not without some scars.
CVLUX: What is your favorite meal? Randy: Filet Mignon with a few eggs and hash browns. You can’t beat a great breakfast!
CVLUX: What was the best advice you’ve every received? Randy: “Never make the same mistake twice.”
CVLUX: What is the best advice you’ve ever given? Randy: Follow your heart, and give your all to the one that has it. CVLUX: What is the most important thing your parents have given you? Randy: Without a doubt, love. The one thing I know is that I’m loved. CVLUX: Finish this sentence: “I’m a sucker for…” Randy: A great conversation over a glass of wine by the fire. CVLUX: What would you consider to be the best show on television? Randy: I really don’t watch T.V. In the last year, I haven’t watched more than a few hours, collectively. I prefer to spend time with friends and family. However, I do enjoy House of Cards. CVLUX: What’s your favorite time of year? Randy: I enjoy the winter time most. Going to the mountains and seeing the fresh snow is amazing. Plus, I have trouble sleeping when it’s hot! CVLUX: What is your favorite music? Randy: I like EDM, electronic dance music. I relax when I listen to it, which is odd considering it has one of the highest beats per minute! CVLUX: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? Randy: That’s a hard question! I love Fresno; the people are genuine and caring. We are 2.5 hours from great locations. If I had to choose another place to live, it would be London. I have so many great memories there and love the history and culture. CVLUX: What subject makes you the most uncomfortable to be asked about? Randy: Nothing really makes me uncomfortable. You only have one life to live so you should be proud of your mistakes and your successes. They are all part of the journey to where you are now, and where you are going. CVLUX: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Randy: I sold my house and everything I owned, and invested it in the stock market, which turned out to be a pretty good move! Everyone thought I was crazy. You have to believe in yourself! CVLUX: Finished this sentence: “The world would be a better place if people…” Randy: Respected one another more. You never know what someone else has experienced in their life.

AMERICAN SPIRIT LISA KANNING CREATED A MODERN MOUNTAIN RETREAT THAT IS FAMILY-FRIENDLY, WHERE RELAXATION IS NOT THE ONLY LUXURY
Written by MIKE RAGAN Photography by GIBEON PHOTOGRAPHY Interior Design by LKID Architecture by REID SMITH Contractor BIG SKY BUILD
A
merican Spirit is a 6,500 square foot residence located in the private Yellowstone Club resort situated alongside a ski slope in the mountains of Montana. It’s perfect for an active family, which includes five boys. The home was remodeled in 2013 by LKID in conjunction with Big Sky Build. The clients were living in the originally-designed home but felt it lacked the mountain aesthetic needed to blend effortlessly with the surroundings. Throughout the residence, textured rugs were laid and leather suede and faux fur upholstery were added. Textured wall coverings, birch twigs and natural birch and cherry bark panels were installed on the walls and ceilings.

Not wanting to detract from the amazing views, LKID balanced a neutral color palette with the layering of different textures. A room-sized Stone Harbour Rug from Niba Rugs and a custom Clip sectional by Thayer Coggin help to balance the grand scale of the living room while providing comfortable seating for the entire family. High Desert grass cloth by Hartmann & Forbes was added to the walls of the window alcove to provide a natural backdrop for the stunning vista. Swivel hair-on-hide lounge chairs by Kyle Bunting, a Powell & Bonnell Tuffet Ottoman and Fuse Lighting Sofia swing arm sconces allow for practical use of the space.
The kitchen features an intimate seating area at the fireplace, anchored by a pair of Mimi London Bardot lounge chairs upholstered in a subtle brindle-toned cowhide, as well as a custom builtin breakfast nook. The hand-molded clay Humo Cocktail Table by Espacio and the woven Wounaan basket by Rainforest Basket lend an artistic element. Painted white cabinetry was torn out and replaced with more appropriate textured wood cabinets. Heavy draperies were removed and replaced with motorized shades to maximize Montana’s unparalleled beauty. In the dining room, Hartmann & Forbes natural woven window shades and Rosemary Hallgarten Ombre draperies serve to frame slope-side views without distraction. The severe lines of the X Dining Chairs by Cliff Young are balanced with the organic shapes of the lighting and Robert Kuo accessories.

Home for the Holidays
by Mike Ragan
A
s we approach the winter holidays, the change in the air stimulates our senses with smells of juniper, pine, berry and seasoned wood crackling on the fire. It is a time to honor tradition and family, reflecting on past memories, all the while creating new ones and looking towards the future. Surrounding ourselves with tactile comforts of soft wool, leather, candles, and a tree filled with ornaments that each hold a memory, allows us, if only for a moment in our busy year, to visit that special place with an open heart.
