t was a sad start to 2016 with the devastating news about music legend, David Bowie, dying of Cancer. Friends, family, fans and celebrities took to social media to express their feelings about the loss of this superstar who touched people’s hearts in so many ways through his music and life. Many people have said that his musical genius can never be replaced. Being big fans at VIVA we decided to dedicate this issue to David in a Bowie-inspired edition. Head of photography, Karin Albinsson, photographed Bowie back in 1997 at the Manchester Academy. The pictures were taken on a film roll camera and have never been published before, so we are honoured to be able to feature them in this issue of VIVA. Bowie inspired a whole host of Mancunians, from artists to musicians; fashionistas to bar and restaurant owners. We contacted some of the City’s kooks, including Mike Joyce from the Smiths; Hooky from Joy Division; Rowetta from Happy Mondays; and DJ Greg Wilson and we asked them to share their Bowie stories with us and our readers. NOT HOT: Real Cheshire Housewives Real Cheshire Housewives - really? Sorry but I live in Cheshire and have done for twenty-five years, and there’s not much ‘real’ for me in that show. Not reading the labels on your food packaging There’s a lot of crap out there and only we can be responsible for what we eat. rends are always evolving and fashion is continuously changing, so how can we bring our wardrobe back up-todate without breaking the bank every season? Nothing adds a bit of oomph to outdated pieces like timeless jewellery.

Last summer, Manchester born brothers, Patrick and Benjamin Collinson, set upon starting up their dream business. VIVA caught up with the budding entrepreneurs to talk all things bling. WHAT DOES FIYAH MEAN? FIYAH is the spark inside all of us. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND FIYAH? We have always been avid followers of fashion, from catwalk to high street. Last August, we decided we wanted to run a fashion related business and set about looking at the different options. We wanted a head-start so we looked at businesses for sale, but most of the businesses for sale were bricks and mortar shops. Most of these stores were obsolete and we couldn’t see ourselves running them. We decided to set up our own forward-thinking company with an online platform being the main emphasis. We have a passion for precious metals and stones, diamonds intrigue us and we’re fascinated with the markets they trade in. We want to proceed in a direction whereby we use a lab to create diamonds for our jewellery. It’s a more ethical process than using natural diamonds. WHAT ARE THE CREATIVE IDEAS BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS? Our designs are selected to mirror simple, contemporary trends in fashion. We started 2016 looking at silver and its growing trend in the jewellery market. Recently, we have been trying to increase the range of our gold products to appeal to the masses. WHAT ARE THE THREE KEY PIECES IN YOUR MOST RECENT COLLECTION? They’d have to be the Adjustable Plume Ring, nine carat Gold Amethyst Studs and the Paralines Bangle. The Plume collection is all sterling silver with a pure silver coating. The name comes from a long, soft feather or arrangement of feathers used by a bird for display or worn by a person for ornament. The Amethyst Studs are important to the collection because purple is the colour of the stone and it is the colour of FIYAH. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and made drinking vessels decorated with it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. The Paralines Bangle has been a very popular choice with our customers. s with J.F.K., Martin Luther King and Elvis, January 10th, 2016 will go down as one of those days that everyone will remember where they were and what they were doing. The day that David Bowie died. He’s been described as a Starman, a being sent to transform much more than music, an icon and a beacon. Those who felt alienated could identify

with this alien. As the Smith’s Mike Joyce told VIVA, Bowie “empowered a lot of people. He made weird acceptable.” Which is why he would have been right at home here in Manchester and why he influenced so many Mancunians - musicians obviously but also those in the arts, fashion and business. That’s why this edition of VIVA magazine has been dedicated to him with our never-before-seen shots of Bowie playing The Academy in 1997, courtesy of VIVA photographer, Karin Albinsson. It’s also why Mancunians have added their voices to tell VIVA how the boy from Brixton brought changes and inspired them. “I loved Mick Ronson, what a frontman. I modelled my bass playing on him. I thought that me and Barney were like him and Bowie,” Hooky told us. And iconic DJ, Greg Wilson, says simply that Bowie was his musical hero, his first great obsession. So much so, he used to tag his name with lightning bolts. Others remember encounters that stayed with them for their lifetimes. From Rowetta, who notes a beautifully surreal moment after performing ‘Hallelujah,’ when the Thin White Duke commented “That was really eclectic” to actor and award-winning playwright, Ian Puleston-Davis, earning a wry smile after inadvertently interrupting him. Black Dog’s Ross Mckenzie remembers a down-to-earth Bowie who happily chatted backstage at Glastonbury and was looking forward to his daughter’s birth. GREG WILSON - DJ & Producer Favourite Bowie album/song? It’s a toss up between Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory. Couldn’t possibly pick a favourite track on either album, so I’ll go between the horns of this dilemma and select something he wrote and produced but gave to Mott The Hoople, providing them with a massive 1972 hit, All The Young Dudes. Did Bowie influence you in any way? If so how? He was my musical hero at a key formative stage in my life, my early teens. The depth of his words and music really resonated into my being and, as I’m about to outline in a sprawling blog post I’ve written, he was my first great obsession – I even used to tag my name with Aladdin Sane style lightning bolts instead of Gs. Between 1972 and 1975 he was very much a part of my identity. Describe how his death has affected you. It’s caused me to reflect on a lot of things, both on a personal level and with regard to Bowie himself. That he orchestrated his death as his final work of art is greatly impressive. Having not cared for his musical output during recent decades, I’ve finally re-connected through Blackstar which has deeply touched me. Do you think there is anyone else who could be the next Bowie or have the same cultural impact ? Artists like Bowie are one-offs who arrive at a specific point in history and, through their work, change people’s perceptions and consciousness via the shock of their originality – or enough people to make a difference. Others have done this and will continue to do this, at different places in time and through various mediums but it’s always dependant on the right person arriving at exactly the right moment and location. So I’d answer yes on the one hand but no on the other. 26 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk

MIKE JOYCE - The Smiths Did you ever see him play live. If so where and when? I saw Bowie play at the Move festival at Old Trafford cricket ground in July 2002. My wife Tina has always been a huge Bowie fan and she’d heard that it was a hit-heavy set and we weren’t disappointed! Apart from featuring tracks from the Heathen album, the set included such classics as, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Starman, Changes, Fame, Heroes, Let’s Dance and Ziggy Stardust. The band featured long-time collaborators, Mike Garson on piano and Earl Slick on guitar. Did Bowie influence you in any way? If so how? Well, I never had a red lightning flash painted on my face! I think Bowie’s influence on myself and my peers was subliminal but quite radical too. He empowered a lot of people who would otherwise have been quite insular. He made weird acceptable thus enabling people who were considered outsiders, to feel comfortable with themselves and giving them the confidence to project their own personalities. Describe how his death has affected you. Bowie is the most important musician to have passed away in my lifetime. Bigger than Elvis? Maybe not in terms of record sales but certainly in terms of influencing musicians of my generation and age. In 2013, my wife and I went to the David Bowie Is exhibition at the V and A museum in London and it was incredible to see that outfit and those boots along with other iconic memorabilia. The sadness is realising that there won’t be any more additions to the legacy. That’s it. It’s that finality that’s hit home in his passing. Looking on the positive side, just take a look at body of work he’s left behind!

KARIN ALBINSSON Photographer Favourite Bowie album/song? The Bowie album closest to my heart is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. I still have the original tape that I play on an old tape-recorder at home in Sweden, those songs bring back old memories. When hitchhiking through Europe, in my youth, I was stopped in my tracks by the sound of STARMAN. A young, English guy was playing my favourite tune on his guitar on a beach in Cannes. Instantly I knew that we had something in common, this stranger and I. The young Eng-lish Musician and I spent a day together. A month later he turned up at my parents’ house in Sweden. He taught me to play Starman on my guitar. At the same time Ashes to Ashes was released and we kept popping into record shops putting the headphones on and listening to Bowie’s latest album, Scary Monsters (and super creeps). The meeting with the English busker who played Starman on his guitar resulted in two daughters! When and how did you hear that he died and how did it make you feel? I found out that Bowie had died on Monday morning the tenth of January. When I saw photos of Bowie posted on Facebook, I knew. I had had a solemn feeling from a few days previously when I had seen part of the video from Black Star. It felt like he had said farewell and then I knew he was gone. I felt numb, Bowie’s death will take some time to sink in but what an amazing legacy he leaves behind. In my opinion, Bowie was and is the solo artist with the greatest cultural impact. His music will live on.

ARMAND BEASLEY - Makeup Artist & Actor When did you first hear Bowie, how old were you, what were you doing and how did it affect you? It was Top Of The Pops and the Ashes To Ashes video, way back in 1980. The surreal image of Bowie dressed like a Pierrot flanked by four androgynous figures walking along a beach with a bulldozer behind them! I was transfixed at the TV! I had never seen anything like that. It was so visual and surreal.

Did Bowie influence you in any way? If so how. Bowie was the master of transformation and self expression. He used his image, videos and music to transport people to another world. His creativity and diversity really affected me and his imagery still inspires me today as a make-up artist. Throughout my life, I’ve always experimented with my image and my personal creativity has been heavily influenced by Bowie, Pete Burns, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones and Sarah Brightman.

Describe how his death has affected you. I believe that death is another phase of life. Well, life of the soul. Your soul or energy moves on. For me, the whole point to life is to be happy and make other people happy too. David Bowie achieved that and more. I’m sure that his music and creativity will inspire many more people to create. He will be missed but, as in his Ashes to Ashes lyrics, “ I’m happy, hope you’re happy too.” Yes we are, David. Thank you.

PETER HOOK - New Order and Joy Division Favourite Bowie album and song? KOOKS Did you ever see him play live? Hardrock, Manchester; Glass Spider, Los Angeles; cricket club Manchester. When did you first hear Bowie, how old were you, what were you doing and how did it affect you? A girlfriend of mine wanted me to take her to see him at the Free Trade Hall when he was doing a matinee in 1972, I think. I

refused and she dumped me. I then went to the old record stall on Shudehill and someone had sold all their Bowie LPs. I bought the lot for two pounds fifty each, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs, Man Who Sold The World. That was it, I was a fan. I loved Mick Ronson, what a frontman. I modelled my bass playing on him. I thought that me and Barney were like him and Bowie.

When and how did you hear that he died and how did it affect you? On Good Morning Britain, I was sad, I’m a fan. I really enjoyed his talent. . Do you think there is anyone else who could be the next Bowie or have the same cultural impact? Never, never. He was a unique talent and the longevity was amazing. If only someone could. ZIGGY LAVELLE - MD at Lavelle Division When did you first hear Bowie, how old were you, what were you doing and how did it affect you? I was thirteen years old, had just been through a few operations due to my childhood polio (contracted at eleven months old and the last outbreak in the UK). anywhere, didn’t go to school much. I was alone and very sad. Then I heard Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust, I witnessed this wild and wonderful person who spoke to me! I was in my bedroom listening to someone telling me, “Yes, you are strange, yes, you are different and, one day, everyone will want to be like you!” I believed him, I had the swagger, some people didn’t like it but I didn’t give a f**k! I knew who I was and I really liked me and that mattered!

He saved my youth and made me smile wide and I had no fear! I could be or do anything! He taught me to pass that message on to people I meet. I believe “If you don’t show people the moon, they will never reach the stars!” Describe how his death has affected you. Now, I look back and see how brave and even more special he appears to have been. Now he has taught us all to die with dignity! “He staged his own death,” they say! “It’s all I would expect,” I say!

ROWETTA - Happy Mondays Did you ever meet Bowie? If so, where and when? Yes, at Glastonbury in 2000. I was playing the Pyramid Stage with Happy Mondays and Bowie was headlining. My best friend, Ross, is a massive Bowie fan so I invited him and our friend Maria to come on the tour bus with us. We couldn’t believe it when we arrived and my Portacabin dressing room was directly next to his. He came over and said hi and was so downto-earth and friendly, I froze. I’ve never been so starstruck. I took a couple of photos of him with my friends, which I treasure. He then came to the side

When did you first hear Bowie, how old were you, what were you doing and how did it affect you? My mate brought Ziggy Stardust into school. I was fourteen and getting bored with what was out there. I just fell in love with the melodies, the instrumentation and that unique sound and, of course, his extraordinary voice.

Favourite Bowie album and song? Let’s Dance for two reasons. One, it’s filmed in Australia and two, I can’t.

I remember the first track I ever heard of David Bowie, I was on a caravan holiday in Cornwall one summer mid seventies-ish and it was Life On Mars. I was very young and I remember even then thinking how brilliant it was and I wished I could write something that could stir so many emotions within oneself. The piano is amazing in that song! I wanted to learn the piano but settled for the guitar in the end, which I still play! Bowie was a genius at taking a simple melody and turning it into a massive piece of music! Did you ever see him play live, if so where and when? I saw him live once in Stratford-upon-Avon when I was based in the UK in the army. Tina Turner played there too in 1985 and it was one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen! Describe how his death has affected you. Bowie was unique in that he went through decades changing his style constantly and always being a world-class top artist. We lost a music legend the day he died and when I heard the news I actually left the office because I was filling up! He’ll always be with us!

Did you ever see him play live, if so where and when? Twice. On the Serious Moonlight Tour in Milton Keynes in 1983 and his Sound and Vision Tour at Docklands Arena in 1990. Did Bowie influence you in any way? If so how? He broadened my imagination. His music made me want to write stories. When and how did you hear that he died? On the radio in a cab crossing London.

I remember using the album cover for Ziggy Stardust for the launch of The Living Room W1 on Heddon Street. When and how did you hear that he died? Like most people I imagine, I was having my morning coffee, switched on the TV and remained watching and reminiscing.

Designer Focus: Joe & Co.

t’s always great to hear about a homegrown designer that has achieved what they set out to do and made a name in Manchester. Joe & Co. have been around for, what seems to them, a lifetime and have made their mark on the city. Josef Schindler, denim connoisseur, is a stalwart of fashion and design history, having been around for years. With a store in Manchester’s Northern Quarter and a range that’s focussed on timeless, luxurious pieces, it’s clear the brand care for their customers. The man behind the denim has taken time out of his busy schedule to talk to VIVA. Think all things yesteryear, threads and Beckham.

How did you start in fashion? It all started in 1980

of a discount culture and that’s not the way I see the brand going. We have pulled out of all the stores in the UK because of this, as it devalues our work ethic as a brand. We are concentrating more on our website, with a higher level of product and with more of what we call luxury workwear, working with various Japanese and Italian denim mills and manufacturing a large percentage of our garments in the UK. I am also consulting for William Hunt on Savile Row for his denim and casual line, which is a work in progress. We’ve been friends since the early eighties and I worked as his agent in the late eighties.

This issue has a focus on David Bowie, has he had any impact on your designing?

I wouldn’t say David Bowie has or had any impact on what we create or produce. However having said that, he certainly had a great influence on what we did in our younger days of going out, who you hooked up with, where you went, who you met and so forth, along with other artists of that generation and it’s these people who came into your life, that took you on your journey to where you are today.

after leaving Express Newspapers to start working at Stolen From Ivor. The next seven years or so was an amazing time working in Manchester, with varying kinds of shops and clubs opening, all with a very broad scope of genres. We were in the age of diversification. Coming out of disco and into the experimental period of divergent genres of music and fashion, from the new romantics to Bowie. All different types of people in the same club. It was mad. Diverse fashions were on show all over the place and what music you were into and who your pals were, basically dictated what you wore. As the months and years went by, more clubs and shops opened and fashion changed very quickly. I would say from my days at Express Newspapers in 1979, the casual movement started to become very big and more people were taking notice of what everyone was wearing such as Adidas, Levi and Lee - Lois Jeans were massive. Little gangs of jibbers were going on Euro trips and bringing back labels that had never been heard of, which were different and well sought after. It was really in keeping with the Casual movement of the time. Then the Hacienda opened in 1982. That just changed everything and almost overnight it all went to another level. What upcoming projects do you have for 2016? Since the

If the consumer likes what we produce and buys into what we have created, then that is the best feeling and compliment you can have. Where do you get your inspiration from? Our inspiration

comes from all sorts of weird and wonderful places. We take it from the turn of the Industrial Revolution, up to the 1950s and sometimes beyond. We pay homage to the icons of yesteryear, that epitomise the essence of cool and create a new take on past trends. Not just in our collective history but those of our travelling forefathers from across the pond, by using modern shapes and utilising the dead stock fabrics.

What’s been your biggest achievement in your career? To date,

I would say Josef Jeans was my biggest achievement. Starting the brand in 1987 with nothing but an idea and taking it to a household name within five years of inception.

Who would you choose to be your brand ambassador and why?

To be honest, everyone who buys a pair of Joe & Co. Denim or Apparel is an ambassador to the brand. They have gone out and actually bought one of our garments from their wages which they have worked hard for all month. If that makes them feel good, then it makes me feel even better. Of course, we would like a brand ambassador such, who wears our brand and wears it because he likes it, not because they’ve been thrown at them or they have been paid a fortune. Unfortunately that’s the way it is nowadays but if I had to pick, I would have to say Beckham! Is Manchester as a city important for your designs?

Of course. Manchester is my home town and has been since my great grandfather set foot here the later 1800s. It’s the home of the cotton industry and has so much history. It is also becoming the nerve centre for creative technology and digital marketing and, not to forget, it’s the epicentre of music and fashion. I have been spending a lot of time with the children. We’ve been keen on finding new activities to try. Work has been really busy so far this year as the storylines at Coronation Street are really hotting up. My character is having a baby and there will be lots unfolding with that.

NEWS FROM THE COBBLES…

Viewers can expect a hard-hitting storyline coming up in which Bethany Platt is being bullied. It’s been great to film and Lucy (Fallon) has played the part fantastically. We’ve had some really good young actresses come through who have played the part of the bullies.

ACTING FROM THE BEGINNING…

Acting was my dream from being a little girl, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I started out by going to drama classes from the age of ten and, aged thirteen, my drama teacher put me forward for my first role on Children’s Ward. After that, I featured in a Coca-Cola advert which was on during the MOBO Awards. I remember going into school the next day and everyone saying, ‘OMG Tina!’ We didn’t have social media back then, so being on an advert was a huge deal. When I was sixteen, I went to Corrie and, weirdly enough, Jack P. Shepard also played my on screen brother on a show we did together called Clocking Off.

I’m really looking forward to the warm weather so we can enjoy days out with the children. I’ll be spending time catching up with friends. West Didsbury is one of my favourite places to go and enjoy food during the spring and I imagine, because my friends all have children, we’ll have a lot of childfriendly picnics.

With big storylines coming up, I’m going to be mega busy, so I need to start working on my summer body now. I do yoga once a week and I’ve just perfected the crow move. Yoga’s great because you’re just thinking about being in the moment. I’m hoping to start at Ultimate Performance very soon. hen he made his industry debut in the late sixties, Bowie demanded the world’s attention with flaming red hair and bleached brows. He might have been a man but he had some of the most imaginative hair, make-up and outfits of the last half-century. There are a few looks he inspired us to try at Tatiana Karelina.

Bowie was not afraid of colour. You don’t have to be as full-on as he was to wear bright colours. Using a strong pop of colour in the right place can be a subtle touch on the Bowie trend and it is perfect for summer - which will be with us before we know it. There have been so many incredible Bowie beauty moments. For us the most iconic was his album cover for Aladdin Sane. The red and blue lightning bolt can only be associated with the rock ‘n’ roll glamour that was David Bowie. It was still synonymous with Bowie decades later when translated by another influential UK star muse, Kate Moss, for the cover of Vogue and, more recently, when it was revived again by Lady Gaga. Bowie had an uncanny knack of taking the obscure and unwearable and making it comfortable. He always managed to channel the avant-garde into mass appeal – who else could make gold lips and orange smokey eyes wearable?

Look 1: WEArABLE BoWIE

The cover of Hunky Dory was inspired by Marlene Dietrich, which is the best reference ever. Be sure to smoulder extra hard when you work this look. At the time the album cover was shot, Bowie had long, wavy hair. This style is easy. Spray your hair lightly with water and braid it into two braids - if your hair is short, attach long, clip-in hair extensions prior to braiding. Spritz some hairspray on the plaits for extra staying power and blast the braids with hair dryer for a few minutes. Let the braids cool down before undoing them. When you undo the braids gloriously, messy seventies waves will be yours!

Look 2: DrAMATIC BoWIE

Life on Mars? is the first song we really LOVED. The look from the video was marvellous. Pop stars of today take note! The pale blue suit, red hair and dramatic make-up were striking. For this look straighten your hair, paying special attention to the ends. Pull it back as though you’re going to put it up in a ponytail then twist it up and over the top of your head so that the ends are falling in your eyes. Pin it in place with a bunch of bobby pins. t’s time to break the cycle of negativity. If you are feeling depressed, you can easily get into a vicious cycle of negative thoughts, making it increasingly difficult to get yourself out of that downward spiral. Being in a depressive state can become more challenging than the difficulties that caused it in the first place. Depression doesn’t care who you are and anyone can be overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness. Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kanye West are amongst the millions of people around the world affected by depression. So where do you start to make those changes? You have to make a conscious effort to break out of the cycle and take important steps that will lift your mood and enable you to live the life you deserve.

1: Take note of your negative thought patterns and start to replace them with positive affirmations. This is something you need to do every day. 2: Get yourself out into nature, as excising regular

will not only lift your mood and increase your energy levels, it is also likely to improve your sleep patterns.

3: Don’t isolate yourself. Although you may not feel

like it, keep in touch with people. It is important for your wellbeing not to cut yourself off. It can be a great relief to meet and share experiences with people that are going through a similar situation, so consider a self-help group which can show you how others have coped and provide mutual support amongst the group. Groups are often led by people who have overcome depression themselves, so it can be inspiring as well as helping you lessen your own feelings of isolation. For help in finding local selfhelp groups, talk to your local MIND organisation or ask your GP.

4: Allow yourself positive experiences and treats

Take it from me, you can overcome this. Never give up. Part 1 – Structuring a nutrition plan. Head PT Matt Warner reports… Nutrition is a key aspect of any successful change in body composition and one that allows us to achieve truly staggering transformations at Ultimate Performance.

hen it comes to structuring a solid nutrition plan, it’s easy to become lost in the maze of misinformation and poor advice, so here are a few simple but effective steps to take that can make a dramatic difference to your results. Cut the cr*p. If you want to achieve a dramatic body composition change then alcohol and processed foods must go. No compromise. Ditch the booze binges, bin the chocolate and replace these with water and nutrient-rich foods. You can have the odd glass of wine but moderation really is key here! How much protein? How much fat? If fat loss is your goal then do the following calculation to set a baseline intake for protein and fat. Initially, carbohydrates should come from green, cruciferous vegetables. Eat as many of these as you like throughout the day.

Re-feed, don't cheat. After fourteen days of lower carbohydrate intake and consistent training, have a higher carbohydrate day. Add a good fist-size portion of complex carbohydrates to each meal then have a re-feed day every seven to ten days - depending on your rate of progress and energy levels.Plan ahead. Look at your schedule for the week ahead. Plan for inevitable social and work events and look at the best way of preparing your daily meals to keep you on track and avoid potential excuses for not being consistent.

aura Graham runs Vital Management and Publicity. Her son, Leo, is now four years old, and is in full-time nursery, giving Laura the chance to organise her busy schedule. That is not to say there wasn’t a natural worry when she found out she was pregnant. “I had a photo shoot nine days after Leo was born and I was dreading it.” Fortunately for Laura, Leo wasn’t much trouble as he slept all day. Working in media and PR has its advantages, as the industry takes childcare factors into consideration in terms of availability, which has worked well for Laura. “I struggled more than him when it came to returning to work,” says Laura, who found it hard at first to trust people being left alone with Leo. “On the odd occasion Leo gets upset when I have to leave him but after five minutes they send me pictures or videos of him having fun,” putting Mum’s mind at rest. Occasionally, Laura picks Leo up early from nursery or they take the morning off, giving them quality time outside of their

established routine.“Teatime, bath-time, story-time, cuddles and then bed.” The perfect routine for an irreplaceable bond. What is your favourite thing about being a businesswoman? I can plan my own diary which helps no end with Leo and I get to work with some very talented and charismatic people. The people I work with are the most important aspect of my business - be they clients or business associates - and I still find it very rewarding to see my work in print, even after all these years in the industry. What is your favourite thing about being a Mum? I can’t say one specific thing, I love everything about being Leo’s Mum. If I have to highlight one aspect, it’s the moments Leo and I share on our own. When I read him stories tucked up in bed or we play a silly game and he giggles along with me. He’s really trying with his speech and language at the moment and when he says a new word without prompting or reads a short sentence I feel so happy. It’s those moments I treasure.

ollette Casey is a freelance hair and make-up artist. She and her husband have a beautiful son, Luke, who is now eight years old. Throughout Luke’s life Collette has always been conscious that there should be stability in his daily routine which, she thinks, is one of the most important things for a child. Relaxing in bed, talking about the day and discussing what is happening tomorrow ensures “no surprises for him,” making both their lives easier. Luckily, she was able to find a flexible child-minder for her son who was able to fit in well with her own advantageous freelance schedule. “I went back to work after three months,” Collette recalls, before gradually building up her hours over the following six months to allow Luke to transition well. Although Luke was in safe hands, Collette says that she felt terrible leaving him. This is an issue with which many Mothers struggle – the bliss of having a child (although it is not all roses) and them becoming an extended part of you before having to go back to the life you lived prior to their arrival. It is often difficult to identify a routine that works for you both. Collette praises her husband (we’re not forgetting about you, Dads!) and her parents for the help that they provide her with raising Luke.

“I couldn’t do it without them,” she says, as the nature of her job makes a routine very difficult to have. Her husband travels a lot, so their working days vary week to week but getting to experience the little things like attending concerts, awards at school and school trips, makes Collette realise how lucky she truly is. What is your favourite thing about being a businesswoman? I have been a make-up artist for nearly twenty years and I am so fortunate that I really love my job. I have been able to travel the world and meet amazing people. Working for myself and being in control of my own diary is wonderful – I feel I have a perfect balance between family life and work. I try my best to anyway! What is your favourite thing about being a Mum? Words cannot describe it. The love you have for your children just grows and grows, I never imagined it would be so amazing. I probably see him more than most full-time working parents see their children, so I am very grateful. We are a very close family. I guess the best thing about being a Mum is the whole experience.

Rebecca & Olive

ebecca Legon, VIVA’s very own Company Director, gave birth to her baby girl, Olive Lynton, in 2015 after wanting a baby for a while. Being self-employed had its disadvantages for the Mother of one, as she was working up until the day before her cesarean – a problem for many pregnant women. She remembers kneeling at her desk - as she couldn’t sit without sciatic pain - thinking “I must be the only pregnant person working up to the day before giving birth!” Rebecca did what she had to do and for that we applaud her. Despite the non-existent, pre-baby maternity leave, self-employment worked well for Rebecca and Olive. Rebecca went back to working on VIVA at home when Olive was just a few weeks old so, unlike with other children, there was a gradual transition. Juggling work and time with Olive has been almost seamless for Rebecca, which is not an easy feat. She has created a routine that gives her a sufficient amount of time to get her work done and spend quality time with her daughter. “I think it is important to spend the time that we need together when she is home,” says Rebecca which is why she uses her time wisely. From 9am till 4pm every Monday and Thursday, Olive is at nursery which gives Rebecca the time to be able to get down to business and deal with the demands of her VIVA role without any distraction and allowing her, on other days of the week, to prioritise her most important job – being a Mum. What is your favourite thing about being a businesswoman? I enjoy the work that we do with VIVA. It is always exciting. It can be very

stressful at times but it is great to be able to escape from being a Mummy into being a normal working person again. I am very lucky that I can dip in and out so easily. What is your favourite thing about being a Mum? Everything. I just love the unconditional love that you feel. You cannot describe it effectively until you are a Mum. I am very proud of Olive and everything she does from day to day – as are all Mothers, I am sure. Here is a little bit of extra advice for you expectant Mothers and Mothers currently transitioning back into work: •The best way to juggle effectively is to have a couple of trusted people whom you feel secure in leaving your child with if you do need to go somewhere. Also, plan your diary well. •Try and sleep when the baby sleeps, when you are very tired, you make daft mistakes. •It is important to ask for help. There is nothing wrong with that. Your loved ones will be happy to help out so that you can get some sleep. •You will feel guilty when you leave your child to go back to work but try not to be too hard on yourself. You are earning a living for both of you and it improves your child’s interactive skills and confidence to mix with other children and adults.

Turning one! “Hello, Olive.” It’s the toddler years.

he toddler years have arrived! That’s it, my baby is now past the twelve-month benchmark and don’t I already know it. She has turned into a little diva with the odd tantrum here and there – definitely my little girl! I look at her now and she is just a miniature person in her own right with her own personality and crazy little habits, her likes and dislikes. I just find it fascinating watching her discover the world but I am sure it’s just a Mother’s love that keeps me so interested in her every step.

you have children, pre-planning is a must. Our holiday to Barbados last summer was fantastic - once we finally arrived - but the time difference really disrupted Olive’s sleeping and it took me three months to get her back into a good routine. So I am avoiding long haul and just considering the Med. It’s quite worrying with the world’s terrorist problems and there aren’t many countries that I feel safe travelling to but, after some investigating and a little persuasion from my Mother-inlaw, we have decided on Sardinia, which I’ve heard is extremely popular this year and conveniently just a two hour flight away – perfect for Olive.

What have we been up to? I have already been thinking about our summer holiday, I know we have just only started the new year but, once

Mine & Olive’s top baby buys... return with my family. This ultraexclusive five-star resort really impressed me with their brilliant children’s and baby clubs (I hadn’t even had Olive) and I thought it would be perfect for Frank and Elfie (my stepchildren). So, remembering how great it was, I feel confident that all three children will be happy meaning that I will be able to relax at the spa and enjoy some much-deserved couple time. Olive is still enjoying her Monkey Music classes and we have moved up into the ‘Rock n Roll’ group - I love how she already has so much confidence. She is always the teacher’s pet, taking prime position at the front of class and looking back at me, thinking that she is very cool dancing away to the Monkey Music beats. I’m sure she is in early training so that she can take on her godmother (and now rival) DJ VIVA Ems! So, Olive turned one on the eighth of January and I decided to throw a little party with some of the Mombies (a nickname my partner calls us Mummies) and their little ones. The day was a fantastic turnout but Olive was teething so she cried most of the day while the other babies had the time of their lives running around our house causing chaos. I think I handled it quite well by sipping a few proseccos! No really, it’s a shame that she didn’t enjoy it but she certainly lived up to the saying “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to!” Hopefully she will enjoy her next party when she turns two. Potty Training: I am already thinking about potty training. She is only fourteen months old but hates wearing her nappy and I literally have to pin her down to get it on! I like the BabyBjorn Potty Chair. It looks good, comes in seven different shades, is sturdy and comfortable and, most importantly, it’s easy to remove and clean the inner potty while its splashguard should prevent spills. I will let you know how we go with this next step in Olive’s life.

Walking: I really thought that Olive would be walking by the time she turned one but she still prefers to crawl rather than taking her first steps. However, I do feel like it will happen any day now so I have bought these super-cute reins by Trunki, the Toddlepak Pink (called Betsy). So, once she is on the move, I will be able to keep her safe and close. Changing Bag: Using my changing bag all day every day it became such a mess that I have just invested in a new one. The Choopie Soho CityBag is stylish and in my favourite colour - black with a polka dot lining. The bag is very easy to use and springs open at the push of a button, enabling me to get out what I need quickly and easily. Playing: Olive loves her new Musical Rainbow Tea Party set by LeapFrog and plays with it all the time. You can actually hear it slosh when pouring! It lights up in six colours to teach colour names and plays seven songs so she has been having endless amounts of fun with this toy. First Clock: Olive’s sleeping well at present and we seem to wake up about the same time at 7am every day but, as she gets older, I want her to understand when is a good time to get up and wake Mummy. This Gro-clock is perfect and is very easy to understand. Basically she can get up when she sees the sun and sleep when she see the stars. Later on I can add in a digital clock (within the sun and stars picture) for when she is ready to read the time. Umbrella Stroller: With such a big family:- two small children; Olive; our big boy dog, Ralph and, occasionally, the Mother-in-law as well, I really needed a small, lightweight, compact stroller that wouldn’t take up too much space on days out. icon interiors - inspired by the late David Bowie

Luci Roper reports on this season’s interior design trends... ere at VIVA we are Bowie bonkers so in our interiors section we thought what better way to remember the great man than to get creative, break out our inner showman and come up with some fantabulous Bowie-inspired home décor ideas.

We enlisted interior designer, Luci Roper, to take a look at the fashion and pop icon’s influence. There are just so many looks, names and personas it would be impossible to reflect them all so we opted for one of our favourite looks and asked Luci to go full-on Ziggy Stardust. This over-the-top, glam style encompasses plenty to translate into interior design, including; colour, neon, geometrics, psychedelic patterns, metallics, glitter, cool lighting, pop-art and statement accessories. At VIVA we love it all!

To create your own corner of Bowie heaven, simply choose your room, dust off those platform boots, throw on your craziest decorating outfit and let’s go. Wall décor is the starting point to transform any space and here it has to be orange in our opinion. For other ideas Luci recommends Little Greene’s Retrospectives range which contains authentic seventies colours including a brilliant shade of groovy orange called Marigold. Luci points out that seventies style has seen a huge revival in recent years. The retro look is nearly as popular today as >

it was back then and there are plenty of interior design and décor products to choose from. Whenever possible add glitter and sparkle to your life. This mantra fits perfectly with our Ziggy home style. Luci recommends glitterbugwallpaper.co.uk for their fantastic range of reflective wallpapers. Maybe consider bold monochrome stripes on walls reminiscent of one of our favourite Bowie tour outfits his black and white bulbous cat-suit by Kansai Yamamoto. Black and white striped Mimi wallpaper by Harlequin hung horizontally fits the bill and will give real impact to your room. Once you have determined your wow-factor wall, Luci suggests you go white, light and bright in the rest of the space to avoid overpowering the design. No Bowie-esque room is complete without geometrics, zig zag patterns and a lightning bolt or two. A carefully chosen piece of Bowie art, with some printed cushions and maybe a highly patterned rug, will be perfect at this point. For something special why not commission Manchester’s very own acclaimed artist Jay Smith or produce your own tribute piece. Try a trip to Fred Aldous in Manchester’s Northern Quarter to grab the required canvas, brushes, paints and mandatory glitter. For Bowie super-fans redbubble. com have hundreds of cushion

designs to choose from and The Rug Seller, based in Trafford Park, has some groovy colourful chevron rug designs. BHS sells awesome lights in the shape of guitars (because Ziggy played guitar) and lightning bolts both of which come with vintage, circus-style ribbed bulbs. Add some well-chosen furniture in which to relax and admire your efforts. Go for retro styles, psychedelic patterns and velvet which best reflect the period. If budget is not an issue check out London-based jimmiemartin. com for punchy, unique, glam-rock, designer furniture creations, lighting and homeware. Finally, accessories always add the final flourish and, with such a kaleidoscope of funky, fun stuff around, there is plenty to go at. Luci’s favourite go-to shop, Home Sense, usually has plenty of these. Don’t set too many limits on your searches and purchases. Weird and wonderful finds, from a variety of sources, will all work well to enhance this style of interior. Most importantly, take your time and evolve the look. In the words of David Bowie

avid Jones, David Bowie, the Thin White Duke, whatever label you try and put on this Starman there is no escaping the fact that The Man who Fell to Earth was an enigma. Bowie wasn’t just an artist, he was Art itself. Everything about him was the expression of an intellect and artistry light years ahead of its time. Bowie’s work was the life of an Alien being played out in front of our very eyes. The scenes from the 1976 film ‘The Man who Fell to Earth’ - with Bowie sitting in front of an array of television screens watching the media world being played out in front of him - was so prophetic looking at the current obsession of people playing out their lives online today. One of the lesser known sides of Bowie’s life was his understanding and appreciation of great cars. He even alluded to this in his songs, the earliest being ‘Rupert the Riley’ in 1970, when his 1932 Riley 9 Gamecock, which he had to crank to start, kicked back the starting handle taking a chunk out of his leg! As Bowie’s success grew so did the stature of his cars and, by 1973, he was seen in the classic Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, quite apt for a Classic English Gentleman. Bowie had an eye for style and flair and it comes as no surprise that he had in his garage one of the world’s most gorgeous cars of that time - a stunning E-Type Jaguar. Bowie’s years in Germany introduced him to Mercedes. This fascination stayed with him for years and one of his most controversial modes of transport came in the form of the statesman-like Mercedes 800 limousine -much preferred by the world’s dictators - which ensured everyone knew when Bowie had arrived! Bowie, “I’m waving not saluting!” Bowie stayed with Mercedes through his golden years with his wife Iman (seen above at the wheel of a beautiful Pagoda coupé) and Bowie himself was often seen behind the wheel of a Merc. An iconic piece of Bowie automotive art came in 1999 for the fortieth anniversary of the Mini when Bowie created a Chrome Mini, now on display at the BMW Museum in Munich. Bowie said at the time, “I wanted to make something that could not be be distinguished from its surroundings.” A apt statement considering Bowie’s own chameleon-like persona. As for the song ‘Always Crashing the Same Car,’ (1977) this was Bowie referencing his battle with his addiction demons. According to his biographer Paul Trynka, it shows Bowie’s own black humour as he was also trying to sell his old beat-up, black Mercedes at the time! Return to Stardust Starman.

f you are after a delicious and colourful bowl of salad then the Street On 1st is definitely the place to go. The restaurant offers a freshly prepared salad buffet, varying every day.

The biggest healthy eating trend for this year is colourful dishes. The chef says: “everyone eats with their eyes”, so the buffet offers twelve or more different and very colourful salads every day. The most popular, the Rainbow Carrots salad, includes every colour possible from purple and orange to yellow and white. We loved the Roasted Vegetables salad which included fried aubergines. Gluten intolerance is on the increase so Street On 1st offer gluten free bread and most of their salads are also gluten free. All you have to do is check with the knowledgeable staff in the restaurant. If you are not big on cold salads then the place offers healthy soups and paella - also gluten free.

What we really like about Street on 1st is the fact that if there is an item you like which is not on the menu, such as courgetti, the latest replacement for noodles, the chef is more than happy to whisk it up for you.

t’s been all about hotels on the dining scene recently, all upping the ante with their eateries since new kid on the block, The King Street Townhouse, opened its doors. With Spring in the air it would be rude not to indulge in a stay-cation or two while they’re all trying so hard and you can grab a real bargain. We loved the camp chic of Hotel Gotham and its VIP Club Brass, while stalwart, The Lowry, surprised us with fantastic food at great prices from new(ish) Exec Chef, Andrew Green. King Street Townhouse (actually on Booth Street) bowled us over with its elegance and style but the menu doesn’t have the wow factor just yet. One top tip we were told, was to book direct as hotels will match comparison site deals and bung in a few extras. e went for sheer indulgence at Michael Caines Restaurant in ABode Manchester, one of Manchester’s original boutique hotels. An oasis in the heart of Piccadilly and a gorgeous creative space to stay, the downstairs chic dining room offers two tasting menus, as well as à la carte. The work originally of ‘sleb chef Michael Caines and now in the capable hands of acting Head Chef, Mariusz Dobies. It’s a calm, peaceful and elegant dining room, offering superb service under the watchful gaze of Adrian Romea which makes it an ideal venue for an occasion - a proposal, a meeting to impress or a date night that’ll get your date on a plate after. You can pick your price range. The uber, gold-plated version is eight dishes long at £85 per person or £130 with matched wines but you can indulge and get a taste of the action from just £65 pp for a six course taster menu - much cheaper lunch deals are available too.

We, of course, opted for the bells and whistles version and were entertained royally by sommelier Vladimar Mokry who is a corker of a wine buff. Passionate and spot on when it came to creating the perfect pitch of food and grape on your palate. Highlights for us were the roasted scallops, the duck liver served with a wonderfully buttery Chardonnay and the quail with a perfect Leyda Pinot Noir that got VIVA Ems drinking red wine. There’s a nuance of flavour to the dishes, a subtlety that uses every dot, dash, smear and splash, on the plate to create the final delight in your mouth. Rumour is that Caines will be ending his involvement with ABode but Mariusz Dobies creations and an able kitchen with the restaurant’s superb service, will keep the hotel in the spotlight and they promise big and exciting things to come later in the year. Later, Peter Hook took to the stage for an amazing performance of Blue Monday. The orchestra added wonder to an already perfect song as MC Tunes introduced Shaun Ryder to the stage. His presence, alongside Rowetta and Bez sent the crowd nuts and an unforgettable performance of Hallelujah followed. The production came to an end as Ryder and Bez left the stage to Rowetta for a performance of You got the Love; her voice as powerful as ever. apital had a huge 2015 which we finished in style in London’s O2 Arena at our annual Jingle Bell Ball with Coca-Cola. Coldplay, Little Mix, David Guetta, Justin Bieber and loads more took to the stage during two sold-out nights, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December. Check out all the highlights at capitalfm.com! We didn’t mess about when it came to big prizes to round off the year either. Capital’s Cash Call ran throughout October giving you a chance to bag a share of a mega £500,000. It’s fair to say a few Capital listeners had a top Christmas on us! In December we flew somebody out, VIP style, for five nights in Vegas, then we sorted out a load of listeners with seven hundred and fifty quid to spend at Manchester Arndale – just in time for a Christmas shopping spree! No biggie though, it’s just what we do. Rob tried so hard to start off 2016 with a bit of a health kick. So we thought we’d put him to the test on ITV’s Ninja Warrior course – can you guess how that went? VIVA’s Band on the Radar: queen Bee and the Drones

here’s a new band in town who are ready to bring something different to Manchester. Queen Bee and the Drones only started out in October 2015 but it’s looking like the sky’s the limit for this group, who have already started to make their impact on the music industry. A sweet name for a hard-core band, Queen Bee and the Drones symbolises its Manchester roots with the Bee and also fiery lead singer, Firouzeh - who claims she’s got a “bit of a sting.” It was suggested that the name was too cheesy but it was quickly approved by the rest of the (male) band members. The band’s chosen genre is Symphonic Metal, a mix between the usual heavy metal that you can do your head-banging to but with the voice of an angel (Firouzeh) and the accompaniment of a keyboard. The multicultural group all bring an ambience from each of their backgrounds which makes the band so distinctive and divergent. Each member has a long history

in music, with previous bands and solo careers but have never quite found the perfect members to form their ideal band. The protracted wait is finally over, as Firouzeh, Mario, Patrick, Greg, Grant and Adam can each finally say their searches have been fruitful. Mostly tight-lipped about what’s in store for their future, the band gave us an inkling of what’s to come. With a couple of gigs up their sleeve and a whole lot of writing and recording, we can expect to hear a lot more from the group. This softened metal genre is something that Queen Bee and the Drones want to flourish as they believe it could really triumph in the industry. They believe it’s time to make a change in the prototypical ways of music, a new form of music is ready to make its impact and Queen Bee and the Drones are first in line to show you how it’s done.

The Man Who Sold the World David Bowie, Having completely fallen in love with Bowie’s music, I started collecting anything that he had done previous to Aladdin Sane. This track has such a great laidback and mellow feel to it; listen to the lyrics and see where it takes you.

Suffragette City David Bowie This is from one of the ultimate Bowie albums ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mar’ and ‘Suffragette City’ is one of the best rock tracks on it. My Bowie fanaticism had taken off and I was into anything ‘Bowie’ including the clothes, hair and make up.

Right - David Bowie 1975 was the year I moved to London and remember buying the album ‘Young Americans’ and thinking how different it was. Bowie doing soul and funk? But it works and this track ‘Right’ is just full of funk. I just love the complicated middle section that Bowie put together with a young Luther Vandross which you can catch on one of Bowie’s films on ‘You Tube.’

The Passenger - Iggy Pop David Bowie collaborated with and wrote for a lot of different music names and none more influential in the punk world than Iggy Pop. ‘The Passenger’ seems quite tame compared to the on-stage antics that Pop and his band ‘The Stooges’ got up to.

Walk on the Wild Side Lou Reed Lou Reed has always been a favourite of mine, ever since Bowie, together with Mick Ronson, produced Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer.’ ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ is, to my mind, one of Reed’s masterpieces of story-telling about one of the characters that were involved in Andy Warhol’s New York studio ‘The Factory.’

All the Young Dudes Mott the Hoople David Bowie wrote this song for Ian Hunter’s band, ‘Mott the Hoople’ in 1972. This version has Bowie singing along with Ian Hunter. It is regarded as one of Glam Rock’s anthems and is definitely a great singalong tune.

Children of the Revolution Marc Bolan and T. Rex This wonderfully cool tune with Bolan’s smooth voice just makes you want to strut your stuff down the road without a care in the world. A classic glam rock track. Photo and words: Karin Albinsson Eighteen years have past since Terry and I did our first shoot. This time we met up for coffee, a chat and a shoot in his local watering hole, the Bubble Room in Bramhall. TERRY CHRISTIAN is a Mancunian with Irish parents. He is best known as a controversial journalist and TV and Radio presenter who often gets in trouble for ‘not mincing his words.’ When Terry’s parents married in 1947 they moved into a rented upstairs in a house in Old Trafford where Terry, his two brothers and two sisters were born (his youngest sister was born in hospital). During Terry’s childhood, the money was short but there are fond memories of treats such as the family holidays at Pontins in Blackpool and of times in Ireland visiting his Father’s relatives. The things Terry enjoyed most at Primary School were playing football and collecting Batman cards and, in terms of work, writing stories - once he grasped the concept of reading! Later on, at Thames Polytechnic, Terry studied applied biology, set himself a low standard, failed to maintain it, got kicked out and ended up on the dole in 1980/81. His break came when, as a politically aware teenager, he was chosen to be one of 100 youngsters from inner-city Manchester taking part in a discussion show by World in Action. As we all know Terry can talk, which he did, came across well and was offered a job at BBC Radio. The rest is history. I asked Terry how important ‘The Word’ was for his career. “To be honest it had a negative effect on my career. I went to the show with clear ideas and eight years of experience presenting Radio Shows. The press portrayed me as a scally from Manchester and the production company hung me out to dry!” Terry explains that the most important part of his career has been when he has had a say and been able to make a difference. At the moment he is a regular columnist for The Sunday People, continues to work on his stand-up comedy Naked Confessions of a Recovering Catholic and is writing his next one, Rebel without Applause while still appearing on Channel 5 and Radio 4. He adds, “To be fair I never had a career, just a series of jobs but I have enjoyed the freedom of that.” And my last question? How do you describe a Manc? “We are friendly but sort of hard-boiled and we often call a spade a shovel!” 90 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk

MEMORIES OF THE LEGENDARY DAVID BOWIE THROUGH FILM... Bowie: The Labyrinth

n January 10th 2016 after a long battle with liver cancer, the world lost David Bowie at the age of sixty-nine. Although Bowie was known mainly as a musician, he was also an accomplished actor with a number of roles that were not musically related. The editors at VIVA have asked me to put together a few words about his acting career and achievements. The most famous of his roles in film was in the epic adventure movie Labyrinth, directed by Jim Henson and produced by George Lucas, this holy trinity of creativity generated a cult film of now legendary status. The story was led by the enigmatic performance of Bowie as Jareth and, in this role, he utilised his unique vocal quality and styling alongside the fact that he was a hugely distinctive individual. There was something odd about him that made him fascinating. Though Labyrinth was a masterpiece, Bowie’s occasional acting forays date back as far as 1967 when he was just twenty. He achieved critical acclaim for his rôle as an alien in The Man that fell to Earth and later broke new boundaries as Major Jack ‘Staffer’ Celliers in Merry

Christmas Mr Lawrence. The memorable soundtrack, coupled with an encapsulating performance full of depth and conviction, make this my personal favourite. This movie features a sequence where Bowie’s character is buried up to the neck in sand as a punishment. The closeups capture Bowie’s eyes which appeared to be two different colours which wasn’t heterochromia, contrary to popular belief, but rather anisocoria (a permanently dilated pupil) resulting from a childhood accident.

Bowie: The Man that fell to Earth

Perhaps the supernatural and heroic qualities that Bowie projected in many of his characters were reflective of a side of himself that he referred to in this quote “I always had a repulsive need to be

something more than human. I felt very puny as a human. I thought, ‘F*** that. I want to be a superhuman.” This was typical

of his attitude and arguably the reason he was so uninhibited in his life and his work. His creativity always stayed at the cutting edge and he was never afraid to embrace difference, new ideas and approaches. In the acting world that is very appealing and made him an enticing proposition. Bowie: Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

Of course, Bowie made a number of appearances in film and TV over the years, both as himself and as his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. The curiousity about him never really died down which was due to his ability to stay current and continually reinvent himself while retaining the qualities that made him the person we knew him to be. He, of course, had a massive influence on the music industry so perhaps the greatest accolade we can pay him is that his work is timeless and enduring, constantly being used in films and televisions dramas. That’s because the music stimulates such strong feelings. Bowie took his talent for emoting in music into his acting with an ease that was impressive and humbling. C Comics continues its development of the universe that they hope will rival the phenomenal success of the Marvel’s Avengers. This film will be part of a huge push to chronicle the evolution of The Justice League, a collaboration of DC’s biggest superhero names. Superman becomes embroiled in a plot to defame him and one particular incident brings him into direct conflict with an ageing Batman who, once again driven by a thirst for vengeance, is eager to take on the Man of Steel. Henry Cavill returns as the man in the red cape in a sequel that looks to be on target to vastly improve upon the original in this series. One which, at best, flattered to deceive. The most controversial casting is Ben Affleck in a role that Christian Bale took to another level. Amy Adams plays Lois Lane and look out for Jeremy Irons as Alfred. This film is pivotal to the launch of DC’s world and we should see cameos from other heroes such as The Flash.

The original animation of this childhood tale certainly holds a place of affection in my heart but this version looks epic, exhilarating and is weighted by a voice cast that includes Idris Elba as Shere Khan; Scarlett Johansson as Kaa; Bill Murray as Baloo; Christopher Walken as King Louie and Ben Kingsley as Bagheera. I’ll be encouraging my Godson out to the cinema to see this one with me (purely as his chaperone).

Having dealt with the frat-house issues in the prequel, the Radners now find themselves having to tackle a wild Sorority house fronted by the brilliant Chloe Grace Moretz. More madness and hilarity ensues as Mac calls upon an old adversary, Zac Efron, to be his ally.

e can look forward to another few years yet of superhero films and, for every good one, we get a few turkeys (Fantastic Four, The Green Lantern). So which side of the equation will the third slice of Steve Roger’s antics slip into? Well, this looks to be the jewel in the crown of this trilogy. Controversy and tension over the presence of the extremely powerful individuals who make up the Avengers stimulates political involvement that eventually brings the Captain into direct conflict with Ironman. When superheroes clash, there are clearly going to be fireworks but Marvel really succeeds because it draws its audience into the emotional world of the protagonists, asking key questions that are relevant to everyday life.
