ello VIVA readers, we hope you have all had a blast over the summer because we certainly have. Once again Manchester has excelled itself by hosting some amazing events and activities over these hot (but a little bit rainy)

few months! The festival session kicked off with the almighty Parklife and with The Courteeners gig selling out Heaton Park the night before. This is one weekend that will be stuck on top of our memory box! Team VIVA took a little trip over to the white party island of Ibiza this summer for a bit of raving and misbehaving! VIVA Ems was smashing it on the decks out there at the pool and boat parties plus Happy Mondays singer Rowetta came out to join us too. You can read about all our Ibiza shenanigans in the travel section. Talking about DJs, queen of dance music, Lisa Lashes, invited us to her house out in the Leicester countryside to spin some tunes in her basement. She has just launched ‘Lisa Lashes Basement Boutique’ nights which will be coming to Manchester soon. Read our interview with Lisa in the music section. The DoubleTree by Hilton’s annual summer party with us was, yet again, another hit with the movers and shakers of Manchester. This year’s theme being ‘English garden summer party.’ Guests sipped fruity cocktails and danced to soulful house and jazz tunes while the Mancunian sunshine beamed onto the SkyLounge terrace. So, inbetween all the festivals, events and work we’ve been trying to get a bit of relaxation in. We’ve just discovered this amazing new massage service for busy people on the go called Urban Massage! It’s such a great concept. You download the app choose which massage you want and at what time that day; then a masseuse will come out to your house / office or wherever you may be, sometimes within the hour! Massages on the go! Check out our health section for more details plus details of other spas in Manchester. We hate to say this but it’s only four months till Christmas. HOT: Mindfulness I’ve just started looking into Mindfulness since having my little boy Alfie. Time seems to go so quickly these days as though my life is in fast-forward mode and it scares me. I want to slow things down and cherish every precious moment with Tom and Alfie. I feel blessed to have my boys and it’s only right that I should treasure each day I have with them! Mindfulness is about slowing down and taking time to appreciate your surroundings. All the everyday things that we take for granted in our busy lives. I feel more grateful than ever as I look closely at my blessings and surroundings.

I’m loving the nutrition course which I am studying and I’m about to undertake the most advanced training with Matt Warner and Nick Mitchell. These fitness experts achieve unparalleled results with their clients. What they don’t know about health and fitness isn’t worth knowing! We’re surrounded by celeb-endorsed projects with little knowledge behind them so to be getting advice from genuine experts is extremely lucky. You only get one body - so I intend to make the most of this and absorb as much information as possible!!

Manchester How good Manchester City Centre is looking these days? I’m proud of my city and always have been and these days there’s always something new and exciting popping up, especially around Spinningfields. Never has Manchester embraced so many awesome, original restaurants and bars. When my pals come up from London they adore it. It’s more chilled here too with a really cool, welcoming Northern Charm vibe. There’s also exciting developments at my old ‘Corrie’ Home - the Old Granada Studios. This city has a really cool mix of historical buildings, the latest architecture, jazz clubs, award-winning restaurants and cool bars. Go Manchester!

NOT HOT: Body Shaming Does anyone have the right to pick fault with someone else’s body? This trend of sad, bitter people at home on their laptops, hurling abuse at other folk has me completely miffed. Our children are surrounded by unattainable, airbrushed images and being told what is beautiful instead of seeing real beauty for themselves. When these Trolls see a celebrity with a normal, healthy figure they start hurling negativity at them. I I think that these Trolls really dislike themselves, thus they can’t see the beauty in anyone else. One word Trolls - just remember - the universe hears you - Karma.

My Teeth!! During pregnancy I had trouble with my teeth. Apparently this is fairly common as pregnancy weakens your immune system causing infections or crumbling teeth! At seven months, at the hairdresser’s, I suddenly had a bad pain on the left side of my face which soon became unbearable. A nearby dentist saw me immediately. He removed a filling and pus squirted out. Did you know a bad infection can encourage premature labour? I was terrified and I’m still struggling with my teeth. Pregnancy definitely affected my peggies! As if we don’t go through enough! Not cool!

Baby Foods Now Alfie has started weaning, we’ve decided to make everything ourselves. I can’t believe the ingredients used in some baby foods, especially the amount of sugar and some baby foods are filled with ingredients I can’t even pronounce! I won’t put this rubbish into my body so I certainly won’t put it into my baby’s! Always read the label. Some brands are made with natural, healthy ingredients. I’m aware that we busy Mums can’t always make baby foods fresh but you can freeze loads and now - finally - even the NHS is wising up to the evils of sugar and sweeteners.

Kelly Jones VIVA presents an exclusive interview with the Stereophonics’ frontman Charlie Cable reports...

tereophonics have enjoyed a twenty year career so far and are due to release their ninth album ‘Keep the village alive.’ A ten-track record written and produced by Kelly Jones which is out on the eleventh of September. This follows the acclaimed 2013 platinum release ‘Graffiti On The Train.’ On the 30th July I received the most exciting text I have ever had. “Babe it’s f***king confirmed - 5:10pm Monday 17th August.” I had just found out that VIVA Ems had bagged the last interview of only three Kelly Jones would be doing and she wanted me to interview this absolute idol! Kelly was in the office next to the boys’ studio, where rehearsals for next week and V festival were underway. In the background other band members Richard, Adam and Jamie were playing Black Sabbath tunes. VIVA Charlie: Kelly, I’ve been listening to your new album continuously and it is awesome! It’s a lot more upbeat than your previous album ‘Graffiti on the Train.’ Kelly: I think it’s a lot quicker impact - much more ‘radio songs.’ GOTT was more cinematic. A lot of the songs on the new album were written the same time as the last album. It’s a bit like a football team, you have a bunch of songs and we had to pick the right tunes for the right time and leave the others on the bench until it was their time to play! VIVA Charlie: ‘C’est La Vie,’ the first single you released, is full of energy! In the video you have two

young Welsh guys basically getting steaming and partying! Kelly: Yes, they’re both great guys and patient with me directing. Considering it was midday they did pretty well and were loaded by two o’clock! ‘C’est La Vie’ took us an hour and half to write! Kelly went on to talk about the screenplay he wrote two years ago - ‘Graffiti On The Train.’ Unfortunately he didn’t get the backing to shoot but assured us it’s just parked up and there will be something in the future. The band wants to focus on their touring for the next few months. Kelly studied film at college and early on in his career the BBC showed interest in some of his work. You can tell when talking to him that his passion for writing and directing is just as important to him as his music. Discussing the videos he has directed so far, I asked Kelly which was his favourite? Kelly: It is the brilliant ‘Violins and Tambourines’ from ‘Graffiti on the Train.’ It’s the story of a guy who has just killed someone and he is driving round and meets an angel like preacher who wants to save him. Much of the video was shot in underwater studios and was ambitious for a first video but absolutely paid off. It’s very dark, with an awesome build-up and with a full string orchestra accompanying. What more could you want from a music video? Kelly has now directed eight of his videos and refers to it as his work experience and that he’s getting his directing CV sorted, so when he needs backing and is asked about his experience he now has plenty under his belt. >

After selling out all sixteen arena shows on their ‘Graffiti On The Train’ tour in 2013, Stereophonics have announced a UK arena tour in December, coming to Manchester on the 4th. VIVA: V festival this weekend, Paris with the Maccabes and the Libertines then some more European gigs - when are you in the UK? Kelly: We are doing UK arena tours in December starting off in Bournemouth, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cardiff, Brighton and ending in London! VIVA Charlie: VIVA Ems and I last saw you at the Phones 4U arena two years ago, thanks to Howard Marks! Kelly: I remember getting that text from him! That was you guys? VIVA Charlie: Yes, that was us! Thank you so much! Tom Jones wandered in and sat next to me, then got up and sang Mama told me not to come and then left! Kelly: Yeah! He was shooting the voice round the corner, so he literally popped in! I remember where you guys were sitting! VIVA Charlie: We gave a big donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust - an incredible charity! Kelly: Thank you very much! We’ve been working with them for fifteen years now and Roger Daltry has been a brilliant ambassador for the charity! VIVA Charlie: You got married last year Kelly, congratulations! Kelly: I did! Thank you! It was just after the last tour so I had six days to get my shit together! VIVA Charlie: You just had to turn up! I’m sure your wife did all the organising! Kelly: Yeah, there were lots of women organising stuff and I just turned up. It was nice for a change, as it’s usually me organising everything! I then went on to tell him I was married last year too and we had the Stereoironics (an awesome tribute band from Weymouth) play at our reception. Kel-

ly said they are brilliant and learn their songs quicker than they do! He thought it was fantastic that we had people queuing up the next day to complain about the noise! I had time to ask about the rest of the band, who are all good and looking forward to getting back on the road. The second single to be released from ‘Keep the village alive’ is ‘I Wanna Get Lost With You.’ Once again it’s been written and directed by Kelly. He says of the single, “It’s about wanting to lose yourself personally and lose yourself with somebody and then just literally get out there. The video follows a young couple losing themselves together over a series of events.” Kelly started his working career selling fruit and veg on a market stall near Cwmaman. Stereophonics started playing in working men’s clubs and mainly did covers. In 1999 they were the first band to be signed to Richard Branson’s v2 label. The band went from strength to strength, including a cover of ‘Handbags and Gladrags,’ also duetting with the Welsh legend Tom Jones for ‘Mama Told Me Not To Come.’ Stereophonics got their long-time-coming first number one single with ‘Dakota’ from their album ‘Language. Sex. Violence. Other?’ The band’s greatest hits album sold one point two million just in the UK. Kelly brought out a solo album in 2007 called ‘Only The Names Have Been Changed.’ This reached number one in the iTunes download chart. So there we go! UK tour announced - roll on December! Kelly Jones, I have followed you and the ’phonics for almost twenty years, seen you fifteen times. You exceeded any expectation I had of you, a true gentleman and absolute legend! Designer Focus: Bewitching Beauty By Jay Briggs

or this month’s designer focus, we had the incredible privilege of catching up with Jay Briggs, the Sheffield born designer making waves on the London fashion scene. Since graduating from the University of Salford in 2013, Jay’s designs have been worn by notable artists such as Paloma Faith, Kylie Minogue and Kimbra. Having undertaken work placements with visual artist and costume designer Alex Noble and milliner Piers Atkinson, Jay’s penchant for dramatic and theatrical designs are fast becoming his signature style.

Hi Jay, how did your brand become so associated with millinery? (designing head pieces) Millinery seemed to be the natural progression for me from fashion design, as it was the part of fashion which always grabbed my attention and always played a major part within my work. The turning point was definitely interning with Piers Atkinson who taught me everything I know about the construction of hats and headpieces. It was there I realised that I enjoyed making headpieces more than I did fashion design, as you could have full creative freedom with no boundaries as practically everything has been done now in terms of creating something new within fashion. It’s costume design where you can realise your fantasy and bring it to life. I moved to London a week after finishing my degree. It was a few months after I was approached by my PR agency (Lewis and Leigh) and the rest is history you could say. Where do you get you inspiration from? I’m a bit of a book worm so my initial inspiration comes mainly from books that I have read. It could be the whole book which inspires me, a character or just a simple quote. From this I will then adapt a story or concept for the collection by researching more in-depth. Witchcraft, Tudor and Elizabethan British History never fail to feed my mind. What projects are you working on at the moment? I’ve just finished working on a project for the Wilderness Festival. It was a costume design collaboration for “Foolish People” and their immersive theatre production “Into the Woods” which will debut there. I’ve created the costumes for three of the main characters within the production. I had full creative freedom to visualise the character

as I saw best, which was super fun. I’m also working on my new S/S16 millinery collection which will showcase at London Fashion Week in September, as part of an installation at Fashion Scout. With such resounding success so early in you career, where do you see yourself and the brand heading? I never really know how to answer these questions as you don’t know what the universe has in store for you. In my own ideal world I’d like to have numerous stockists around the UK and internationally so I could leave my full time job (I have to work full time in retail in order to fund my collections as I wasn’t brought up with a silver spoon in my mouth or a Daddy’s trust fund kid) so that the business would fund itself and allow me to live off it and do what I love doing, creating. With notable people such as Paloma Faith wearing your gorgeous creations, if you had a chance who would you love to dress and why? I’d die a very happy boy if Grace Jones was to do what she does best in one of my headpieces, she is the living persona of everything that made me go into fashion. Being a Northerner living in London, what do you miss most about home? Oh God, where do I start? Everything! There really is no place like the North. You can take a boy out of the North but not the north out of the boy. However, people understanding my accent has to be top of the list. Do you feel there is a difference between the Northern and the Southern creative scene? if so, why? I moved to London after showing at Graduate Fashion Week with my collection, two hundred pounds in my back pocket, no home and a six hour contract at work. It was the scariest yet most exciting chapter of my life. Yet I felt it was something which I had to do in order to get my work noticed and ride the aftermath of showcasing at graduate fashion week as, if I didn’t, then the following year there would be another swarm of designers fighting to get into the industry. With London being the fashion capital of England, nothing anywhere else compares to it purely for the opportunity it provides. I think that, if you want to progress yourself within the creative industry, you need to be in London, as much as it pains me to say.

Everything is happening there. Obviously the North has its benefits too and I certainly don’t want to stay in London forever, I want to grab some of my life back before I’m dead! What can we expect from your next collection? My next collection is very exciting for me personally, as the concept has been manifesting for a while now. It tells the story of one of Britain’s influential and iconic queen consorts, a woman who took power into her own hands and used her sexuality to gain what she desired, using it to her own advantage. Beautiful, charming and enchanting on the outside yet a dark and evil woman under her radiance, outed as the villain when she came to her downfall. A woman who was mother to England’s greatest queen, who made Britain what it is today:- Anne Boleyn. With your work so steeped in fantasy and beautiful story lines, what is your favourite fairytale? It has to be Sleeping Beauty but the Maleficent character. She’s my total femme fatale; dignified, poised and graceful yet evil and powerful with an air of mystery. With head accessories being quite a challenge to get sartorially correct, what headpieces can you recommend for the everyday woman? I don’t believe in the term “everyday woman” as you can be whoever you want to be when you wake up in a morning and wear whatever headpiece fits your character for that day. What’s the worst that could happen? You will be the best-dressed person at the mall. I’ll never forget the time I was on the tube at Bond Street and this middle-aged woman stepped through the door in a black, floorlength, oversized, Comme des Garçons knitted dress; emerald Vivienne Westwood heels (The ones Naomi couldn’t even walk in) and a huge red-feathered hat with veil over her face. Her aura was incredible and you just wanted to talk to her. Off the top of your head (pun intended), what can you see being the big trends for a/w 15? Real fashion comes from within, mixing it all up is far more interesting than a head-to-toe look straight from the Alexander Wang runway. The sixties style focuses heavily on the statement eye. When using a softer shadow, be sure to make those eyes pop with some false eyelashes. Although what may sound surprising is the fact that, despite having more women than men on their client list, the majority of people visiting Dermaskin for botox treatments are men. My style has definitely changed since I have my children and I am inclined to wear more relaxed outfits. For the autumn/winter season I go for lots of layers or chunky cardigans and a nice T-shirt, paired with some skinny jeans. Another favourite look for the cold weather is the combination of shorts and tights with a pair of knee-high boots.

Favourite brands

I usually go to TOPSHOP, as they have so much choice, everything you would possibly want. I like to accessorise my looks with a nice Michael Kors bag and watch. However, I believe my character has more stylish clothes than I do and it sometimes makes me think I should experiment with fashion a bit more.

Beauty

I have several favourite skincare products at the moment, such as the Nivea face cream. I am also hooked on Arbonne Cosmetics. I love the Calm Gentle Daily Moisturizer. Whenever I have a busy day on set, I take with me the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream which I apply on my face and lips before the make-up. Another beauty secret is the coconut oil; as it is so pure and natural, with no added nasty ingredients. It is fantastic for the skin.

Red carpet look

When I decide on my make-up for red carpet events, I believe it all comes down to my mood and, of course, the outfit I am wearing. I sometimes go for heavily defined smokey eyes with minimal, nude lips or there are times when I want to

accentuate my lips with a bright red lipstick and I adopt a 1930’s wavy look.

Summer living Eating well over summer can sometimes be hard, nice weather and the temptation to have a drink after work in the sun are testing. You are also more likely to socialize in summer eating out while weekends away are also more frequent. With most of you going on holiday and summer clothes being a lot more revealing, it is important that you stay on track and don’t undo all your hard work.

WILD SEABASS, CUCUMBER AND SPINACH SALAD

y clients struggle, just like you, so here are my top tips to help you keep on top of your summer body: 1. Eating out- I always tell my clients not to look at my plan as a diet because it’s not, it should be a lifestyle change. So you don’t have to stay in when all your friends are going out but be sensible with your choices. Instead of picking a club sandwich and chips pick a chicken salad. You’re still out having fun but not deviating from the plan. 2. Summer drinks- A nice cool beer is tempting in the sun, beer is one of the worst drinks for you, it is high in sugars and calories so try to stay away from beers and sugary cocktails and go for gin and tonics, prosseco, champagne or red wine. 3. Consistency is key- If you have had a bad weekend you need to get straight back on

track when Monday comes. A lot of people have an all or nothing mentality. “I’v cheated this weekend so I may as well carry on.” That makes your cheat a hundred times worse. We are all human and have moments of weakness but getting straight back on track is what counts and keeps you in good shape. Look at every day as a weekday - nutrtion should be the same day in, day out. 4. Keep your food interesting- Have lots of variety in your food throughout the week. Not only will this keep you on track - as it keeps your food exciting but you get all the macros, vitamins and minerals you need. So the take-home message is still have fun in summer and enjoy going out but keep these tips in the back of your mind. I will leave you with one of my favorite summer recipes to try.

Ingredients: (Serves 2) 4 100g fillets wild sea bass (pin boned and skinned) 1 green chilli, shredded 2 green peppers, sliced 1 lime juiced, with zest 1 cucumber, seeded, skinned and sliced 500g baby spinach, washed 1 inch of fresh ginger, grated 3 spring onions, sliced thinly Handful of basil leaves, shredded 1 avocado, stoned and roughly chopped Handful of green olives Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, 1 garlic clove, crushed Salt and black pepper, Tin foil and parchment paper 1 foil sheet 30cm x 30cm 2 Parchments 30cm x 30cm. Method: -In a large mixing bowl add three quarters of the raw ingredients with the lime juice and leave in the fridge to cool. -Take your foil and lay flat, place parchment on top, matching up at the corners. -Place seabass fillets on top of the paper and spread over remaining raw ingredients and olive oil. -Place the second sheet of paper over the ingredients and make a parcel by folding over the foil tightly and crimpeing. It should look like an envelope when finished. -Place in a heated fan oven at 200°c for 10-12minutes When cooked, take out the envelope and serve fish and aromatics with the fresh, green, spiced salad.

Baby steps. One step at a time; Smiling, Weaning, and Playing!

absolutely love being a Mum. It’s very challenging with one massive hurdle after the next but so rewarding. Now that Olive is sleeping through the night, it is so much easier. The very first night when she slept through I woke up panicked that something had happened to her but, of course, she was absolutely fine and I, for the first time in ages, felt fantastic after a full night of unbroken sleep. I am so proud as, after just a few more weeks of waking up during the night, Olive finally cracked it and at only three months old she was sleeping from seven in the evening to six in the morning. I really do appreciate how blessed I am as so many of my mummy friends have had problems with their babies at night. I don’t know if you just get lucky - of course all babies are different but I truly believe in a strict daily routine and, since Olive’s first bath at two weeks old, she has followed the same pattern each evening. A warm bath at six-thirty, a bottle of milk (making sure it’s very quiet

in her bedroom with no distractions) and most nights she will be fast asleep almost before I put her down in her cot. I also invested in some blackout curtains for her bedroom, which I highly recommend as this helps a baby differentiate between day and night. Olive is now six months old and I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. Everybody tells you to enjoy every day even if it’s bad and they are so right. It goes fast - too fast. I hardly recognise her anymore as the baby I gave birth to. Olive looked completely different when she was born. She had a full head of thick dark hair, (an Elvis quiff and she shares the King’s birthday) and now it has all fallen out and is growing back blonde. It seems like just yesterday that I was bringing her home. Olive is such a happy baby and her personality is really starting to shine through. She already knows how to get what she wants. It’s amazing how early babies can develop and suss out situa-

tions to their advantage. They are truly very clever at such an early age. What have we been doing this past three months? Well, we go to a weekly group called Monkey Music, (classes available throughout the UK) which I definitely recommend for early baby development and socialisation skills for both babies and their mothers. Being a new parent can feel quite lonely and isolated so it’s nice to meet people in the same position as you. I have already met a couple of people who I see on a weekly basis and I now consider them to be good friends. It’s so lovely that we can all hang out with each other and do baby things and enjoy a bit of baby chit-chat. Olive is now on the move, she’s not quite sitting up yet more squirming around like a little snake - which is hilarious! she reaches out to grab anything in sight so now it’s time for me to be more careful on where I place her. There’s also competition in the house, the two ultra chatterboxes, my step daughter Elfie and Olive, both love to chat a lot of nonsense. One ga ga gu ga and the other with her crazy schoolgirl shenanigans but it’s lovely now that Olive attempts to join in with our conversation at the dinner table. Although it’s always gibberish, it always makes me smile! We’ve been weaning from about four months old and, honestly, I have found this quite frustrating. Everything that I have cooked and whizzed up in the food processor she hasn’t liked. (and I do like to think of myself of a bit of a kitchen pro) I have attempted all sorts of combinations of fruit and vegetables to try and make it

exciting but I found during the early stages she only really liked pear and apple purees. (which are easily made from scratch) I also like the Ella Kitchen range as it’s all organic and has a lot of different recipes containing vegetables and mixed fruit but I always find the texture to be too smooth so I add baby rice and her formula milk to thicken it up. I now think she’s ready for the next step as she is getting bored with the same type of baby paste food, so I’m getting ready for stage two and mixing in a bit of protein and adult-type meals. Like An Ibiza Virgin... ...Partying On The White Isle For The Very First Time! VIVA Ems Reports...

hen I decided Ibiza was my summer holiday destination this year, my friends were shocked by the fact that I had never before been to the party island capital of the world. Why? Hmmmm… I’m not too sure, really. It’s not like I have a party-girl reputation or anything! Having discovered DJ-ing as my new passion two years ago, I thought it was time to experience Ibiza so off we went to get the VIVA Summer Party started! As I write this, I’m sitting on a stiflingly warm and sweaty train and I have the biggest Ibiza blues. Listening to some house tune classics, I start reminiscing over the last week of pure madness. What we experienced and how crazily insane the party scene is out there. I’m having to write a clean version and resisting exposing ‘what really happens in Ibiza.’ Day 1: Ibiza rule number one, whether you’ve just landed at two o’clock in the afternoon or two o’clock in the morning, unpacking can wait! You go straight out to party. After all, that’s the reason for going to the island.

Our flight got in at two o’clock in the morning and, lucky for us, we had a man - well known in Ibiza - who welcomed us with open arms. Originally from Manchester, Andy Pope, alias the ‘Drinksmith,’ is considered as one of the best mixologists Ibiza has to offer. Along with VIVA girls, Chadders and Jen The Flat, (who arrived the day before) Andy met us and took us straight to Circo Loco for a party before hitting the beach with our bottles to watch the sunrise in San Antonio Bay. A great start to the Ibiza experience! Our next move was to don our bikinis and man-kinis and head down to Talamanca beach. This is a family friendly area, so be warned, it’s not really the best place to hang about with a group of mates after a night of partying. We chose to move on that afternoon to Bora Bora beach in Playa D’en Bossa, thinking we had the opportunity for some chilled time before continuing the party but DJ’s were banging out the ultimate house music along this strip of the beach and people were dancing on the white sand and out of the sea in true Ibiza style. All I can say of this afternoon is, ‘Suncream and hot bananas!’

It’s always more exciting going out with a big group of friends, who all fly out at different times of the week. After heading back from our day of fun on the beach, we were surprised to find that Rowetta, from the Happy Mondays, had turned up earlier than we anticipated. She looked fabulous as ever, chilling by the hotel pool side in a white chiffon dress and day-glo – very suitable attire for partying. After a quick swim in the pool and a freshen-up, we made our way to Cafe Mambo for some much-needed food and watched the sun set while listening to Australian DJs, Nervo, on the decks! [ Nervo are the sisters who co-wrote David Guetta’s ‘When Life Takes Over’ ] Cafe Mambo is one of Ibiza’s most popular hot spots to watch the sun set. Book a table in advance if you want food, as it gets extremely busy. If you can’t get a table, then there is plenty of room to sit on the sandy beach in front, where you can buy drinks. It was then onto my first DJ gig at, lo and behold, VIVA Ibiza bar! It’s at the top of the West End strip and is considered the number one ‘Workers’ bar. Monday night is all about Blasted which has been run by Alexander J since launching in 2013.

A night for the workers from the workers - but open to all - Blasted offers opportunities for fresh, new talent in the form of DJs based amongst Ibiza’s working community plus guest slots from more established names. I was buzzing to be starting my Ibiza DJ-ing experience at the Blasted night. VIVA Ibiza bar had a really cool vibe about it and my two-hour house set went down well. I ventured back to the bar later on in the evening to do a back-to-back set with promoter Alexander J. Day 2: It was time for a bit of pampering before jumping aboard the famous Pukka Up boat-party so we called on Blowout, an on-demand hair and make-up service. Adding a touch of glamour to Ibiza, the Blowout girls are on hand throughout the summer to make sure you can always look effortlessly fabulous on the island that never sleeps. All glammed up, we were ready to Pukka up on the boats! The company host the biggest sunset boat parties in Ibiza with some of the world’s top DJs spinning the tunes. The VIP Super-Yacht provides the ultimate VIP experience in Ibiza for those looking to create a very special and unforgettable memory. Departing from Marina Botafoch in Ibiza Town, clubbers board to a champagne reception and fruit platters, kick back on the VIP day beds, and get lost in the coolest house music from a state-of-the-art sound system. All set to the backdrop of Ibiza’s jaw-dropping scenery. This summer, the Pukka Up VIP Super-Yacht brought a series of brand new collaborations with Armada, Together, Cr2 Records, Sun:Sets and FIX Records.

Meanwhile, while some of team VIVA were sipping champagne on the crests of the ocean wave, on the other side of the island, myself and the rest of my posse were boarding the World’s biggest boat party by Pukka Up, docked at San Antonio marina. The vibe on this boat is so serial, everyone is just up for a good time dancing on the top deck to some Ibiza house and dance classics by resident DJ Chris Wright - who also let me spin a little cheeky-hour set to the uber sexy crowd that afternoon. Pukka Up have seen the likes of Rudimental, Andy C, Gorgon City, Sigma, Bondax and Sub Focus and now VIVA Ems (ha ha) to name just a few who have hit these boatparty decks this summer! This had to be one of my highlights of the week. That evening, we went to Bambuddha for dinner, There you can find a number of intimate bars where the uber-cool sip on incredible cocktails. As you stroll beneath a tropical canopy of bamboo, past the watchful stone statues, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Ubud or Goa, rather than the Ibiza countryside. Lovingly created, Bambuddha is a restaurant Temple; fusing spirituality with sexuality, designe to

host private events, monumental parties and everything in between. Day 3: After a few morning shenanigans, we were up and out early into the blazing hot sunshine. The location for today was Kanya Beach Resort pool party where I would be spinning some soulful afternoon house tunes alongside promoter Alexander J and Steven Billham from 13 Records. Kanya Beach, on the famous Ibiza sunset strip, hosts an exclusive block of twelve luxury sunset apartments with uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean. We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool and terrace within reaching distance of the poolside cocktail bar. This is also a really lovely place to come and eat in the evening and watch the sunset. >

Party destination for this evening had to be Ibiza Rocks and being a massive fan of Sigma, I was over the Ibiza moon to find out that they were headlining. A big shout out goes to our good fellow Manchester friend, Melissa Hay, who is the ‘hostess with the mostest’ looking after Ibiza’s VIPs at Ibiza Rocks. We had an incredible view of the stage and the ecstatic crowd that had come to see the drum and bass duo, Cameron Edwards and Joe “Wooz” Lenzie.

These two talented young men met at a drum and bass night at Leeds University. Hours that were spent listening to and creating music in a bedroom have ended in chart-topping success for them both. This is the second time I have seen Sigma live and they never fail to impress me. ‘Nobody To Love’ has to be one of my all-time dance tune favourites and I think that was also the case for the rest of the party people in Ibiza Rocks that evening. Afterwards, we wandered out to the legendary Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes for the Sigma after-party. This twenty-five room, boutique hotel, immersed in rock ’n’ roll history hosts the ultimate in Ibiza house parties. Last year saw DJ residency from Idris Elba and, this summer, DJ Harvey was taking the reins for an exclusive sixweek residency at the resort. Pikes is one of the island’s favourite hotspots for celebrities. You just never know what surprise special guests are set to drop by. It’s a little off the beaten track and you can sometimes find yourself waiting quite a while for a taxi home in the early hours of the morning - as a couple of the VIVA girls found. A big shout out goes to Example, who was a true gentlemen and let them share his cab. If you want to know more about Pikes and its history, our good friend Howard Marks is in the middle of writing a book about the resort and the behind-doors craziness in Pikes. It will be out in all good bookshops soon. Day 4: ‘My head is a jungle jungle’, so it was a bit of R and R by the

hotel pool all day but come the evening, we were en route to a super club! As I had mentioned earlier Rowetta from the Happy Mondays had come out to join the VIVA Ibiza party and tonight the line up at Cream Amnesia saw Will Atkinson, with whom Ro has been collaborating recently. This twenty-one year old Trance producer and Dj has hit the Ibiza scene hard this year. Responsible for over eighty Radio One plays since 2008 and with a huge range of A-list support from the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and John O’Callaghan. This young talent is one to keep an eye on! His energetic tech-trance sound got the Amnesia party started in Cream that night, ending his set on “Mesmerise” featuring Rowetta, the crowd went wild on hearing it for the first time. It was a truly mesmerising night! Day 5: And we were on the move, we said goodbye to the madness of San Antonio Bay and headed to Figueratas, to the area’s number one Boutique Hotel, Es Vive. Hotel Es Vive is one of the island’s longest standing hotels and is known for its luxury and cutting edge parties. The hotel, which has refined with age, offers a high end service that doesn’t compromise on the Ibiza Charm. Labelled as the number one boutique hotel in Ibiza, Hotel Es Vive has spared no expense with its transformation. Every single room, from its suites to single occupancy, have been re-vamped to an exceptionally high standard by the renowned interior designer, Sean Cochran. Es Vive’s impeccable Art Deco, poolside restaurant has also been lovingly restored, offering a setting like no other with its impeccable food menu and a forty-plus bespoke cocktail menu.

The hotel facilities include a stunning roof terrace with huge white sun beds and day loungers, which team VIVA were very much drawn to throughout our stay. Overlooking Figueratas Bay, you can see Formentera in the distance and you can people-watch to your heart’s content. It has also boasts an inner sanctuary and Scandinavian-designed spa and treatment rooms. With its big party reputation Hotel Es Vive has access to the most exclusive parties on the island, whether you’re looking to dance poolside or attend Ibiza’s most exclusive underground clubs, this boutique hotel is the perfect location. That night we were on the guest list for SuperMartXe at Privilege, the world’s biggest club according to the Guinness Book of World Records. With a capacity of ten thousand people, you can imagine my excitement. I had heard loads of amazing things from friends about this super club and it is, no doubt, the best clubbing experience in the world! Manchester band Happy Mondays played here in June 1990, when it was originally called Ku and then opened Manumission at Privilege in June 1999, which led to a sixty-four hour, non-stop party that went down in Ibiza history. Notorious drug smuggler turned author, Howard Marks was also out there in June 1999, he explains, “Along with Irvine Welsh and Kris Needs, I was Writer in Residence at the Pink Pussy motel and wrote the fliers for the 1999 Manumission season. It was the biggest and most extravagant party in the world.

The fliers were flash and were kept by the punters for souvenirs. They weren’t like the ones you find on the floor anywhere else in the world.” But before we got our dancing shoes on, we went all out for rock n roll cuisine at the famous Hard Rock Hotel. The experimental eatery, Estado Puro, run by double Michelin star chef Paco Roncero, who is renowned for his theatrical dining and culinary art. He is Spain’s answer to Heston Blumenthal. Boasting a menu of traditional tapas with a modern twist, Roncero’s unique approach shines through the groundbreaking décor and visitors can expect dishes such as the surprising XXI century Spanish tortilla, (served in a glass) tempura asparagus with salsa Romesco, chocolate “filipino” with foie gras and cardamom and yoghurt risotto. The food certainly had an edge, it was quite strange eating a Spanish tortilla from a glass or should I say sipping it from a glass but I have to say it worked! Paco Roncero’s latest concept called Sublimation is another one not to miss. >

It is a unique concept which is now open for its second season in the grounds of Hard Rock Hotel. It’s designed for twelve guests and offers a multi-sensory journey marrying art, gastronomy and technology which merges the tangible with virtual reality thanks to Samsung’s latest wearable technology; the Samsung Gear VR. Diners will be transported from the bottom of the sea in a scene called ‘Oceano’ to ‘Peru,’ ‘Japan’ and even the future in ‘2050.’ Day 6: After a full-on night of pure dancing and a spectacular show courtesy of SuperMarXe hosted at Privilege and what can only be described as the most insane, amazing party I have ever been to, it was time to chill before we headed back to Manchester on our midnight flight. Before leaving, I met with popular Welsh healing facilitator lady of the island, Selina Ingram. This larger-than-life character, trapped in the body of a small, vibrant, Welshwoman, has been helping others heal themselves for over thirty years and is in demand all over the world. hroughout August and heading into September is a funny time of year when we make the most of our last lazy evenings eating and drinking in the sun. (when we get some!) Many rural towns in Italy bid farewell to Summer by holding food festivals with their final harvests, typically called Feste or Sagra. A great day out for both locals and visitors, they showcase the best in Italian regional produce.

If the number of Italian restaurants in Manchester is anything to go by, we love our Italian food. So my search this month was to find the very finest Italian we have to offer here.

Runner Up

Don Giovanni’s Set up in the early eighties, this is one of Manchester’s oldest and most authentic Italian restaurants. They serve classic Italian dishes and the whole experience here is traditional from start to finish. We began with the perfectly smooth Negroni aperitif at the bar to get our taste buds working while we looked through the menu. Make sure you look at their specials boards before you order as fish and seafood feature heavily on them. Our highlights were their meaty Tortino di Granchio (that’s crab cakes to you and me!) served with a tangy mango jam and the very sumptuous and rich, squid ink Spaghetti Nero di Seppia. Salvi’s Cucina A newcomer to the Manchester dining scene, this restaurant on John Dalton Street only opened in 2014. This family-run, rustic eatery is all about the produce. I would go as far as to say you won’t find anywhere in Manchester that even comes close to serving the high standard of ingredients found here. The colour and freshness arriving in front of you are simply mindblowing. This is because owner Maurizio flies much of the produce over direct from his brother’s farm in Napoli. Their Mozzarella is like none I have ever tasted, in fact I tried three, Buffalo, Burata and Smoked. The two main courses I ate were Risotto Con Castelmagno E Barolo - the most memorable wine, cheese and rice I have ever had - and their Ravioli of the Day, with lobster in an unforgiving creamy garlic sauce that’s definitely not for the faint hearted, was right up my street. r Joint winne Piccolino Manchester By far one of my all-time favourite restaurants in Manchester, Piccolino on Clarence Street has been going for well over ten years. In that time the group have opened over twenty Piccolino restaurants across the country but one ingredient this site has over all the others is Ettore, who has joyfully and efficiently run the place from the very beginning. What he and all of his well-chosen staff get so right is service, always with a smile and nothing ever too much trouble. The food lives up to the same high standard and some of the dishes have remained on the menu since the restaurant launched. Old favourites like their Spaghetti Alle Vongole with clams, white wine, chilli and garlic is second to none and the Vitello Saltimbocca, veal with sage, is a must try for any real traditionalists. The wine list is exemplary, we drank a rather special Fiano from Puglia on this visit but you can’t go wrong with any of them. This is just one of those very rare old school establishments that always gets it right. The SkyLounge was transformed into an beautiful and elegant garden, courtesy of Giraffe Events Solutions, using the classic ‘English Garden Party’ theme as the event’s muse. Guests looked radiant in bright cocktail dresses, reflecting the glow of the evening’s dwindling sunbeams that shone on the private penthouse’s spacious terrace.

While guests were warmly welcomed with cocktails and high tea, VIVA Ems set an upbeat tone for the evening, treating the crowd to energetic house beats from her decks. The original Queen of dance music, Lisa Lashes, invited VIVA down to her house in the Leicester countryside to talk Basement Boutiques, PsyTrance, Carl Cox and gave the VIVA Girls a lesson on mixing and scratching it up on those decks. VIVA Ems reports... Lisa Lashes is the original Queen of dance music. She’s been on the scene for eighteen years now and is the only woman to break into the Top ten of DJ MAG’s Top One Hundred DJs. She was one of the first DJs I went to see, at the start of my raving days back in Bournemouth. So I was slightly excited when Jo, from Jabio Womenswear, arranged a road trip down to Lisa’s house out in the Leicester Countryside. An extremely friendly face welcomed us at the front door when we arrived, Lisa’s best friend and ex-manager, Victoria Ball. Victoria brought along some very stylish vintage jewellery for the photo shoot, from her business Victoria Vintage. Lisa took us down to her Boutique Basement where she records all her podcasts and makes her music and I was blown away by her set-up as I am in total awe of this lady and what she has achieved. Being the DJ geek that I am, I’d brought my headphones and asked Lisa if we could have a little mixup on her decks before we started the interview. Of course being the lovely lady that she is, Lisa said yes and started teaching me and the girls some scratching moves. It was very inspiring to meet such a world class DJ. Here’s what Lisa had to say... VIVA Ems: Firstly Lisa, can you tell us a bit about Lisa Lashes presents Basement Boutiques. You’re going to be doing one up in Manchester soon, right? LISA: Yes, that’s right! So, Basement Boutique started its little life in the basement at home. The Basement Boutique was born because I wanted to play a different style of music when I play out because, like anybody, you don’t want to do your job when you get back home. I didn’t want to listen to Hard House or Trance and stuff like that. I like loads of different styles of music like Breaks, Techno, Electro and I’ve been out there eighteen years now and had the accolade of Number One Hard House Female and, even though it’s amazing to have that accolade, it’s quite hard to shake off as well. Sometimes people want you to move out of that but you’ve got to go forward in music, don’t you? Otherwise you can’t be creative. So yeah, I’ve done a lot of techno mixes, put them on Soundcloud Mixcloud and I’m getting into the Top Ten in the ratings. So I decided why don’t I do another side of me, the Basement Boutique side, which is more chilled, a little bit more laid back and just makes me able to express what I want to do. Basement

Boutique will kick off on August 1st. We’re doing intimate venues throughout the UK, so I’m just looking at the vibe that you get in my house which is just chilled, do what you want to do, upload some good music. There’s no stipulation of what you’ve got to do, I’m just a free spirit doing what I want to do. We are getting local DJs, in each town and city to come and play on the night; there’s a competition to put your mixes into Soundcloud and I’ll pick one or two Techno or House DJs to come and accompany me. VIVA EMS: Brilliant concept. So you’re also the ambassador for ‘All Girls on Decks.’ I know you’ve already had the big competition last year but is there going to be another one this year? LISA: There’s definitely going to be another one at the end of this year. I started it last December and we know a lot more about it now. It was hard to do something that was just predominantly girls. I found out that only less than one percent of festivals in the UK have female DJs playing and I’m like ‘why is that?’ So I want to give female Dj’s an avenue, kind of like a starting block that I didn’t have, from the beginning and there’s some amazing prizes to be won! VIVA EMS: The girl that won it last year was Miss Kiff. What made her stand out from the rest, why did you pick her as the winner? LISA: I liked her music anyway and she was a pretty cool girl. She’s South African. Kiff in South African is cool. There were six of them shortlisted in Manchester at the SSR Studios. I basically put them in front of a panel. When Miss Kiff got up to play the decks weren’t working properly and she just basically sorted it out. Whereas there were a couple other girls who just freaked out. The headphones didn’t work and this and that and it wasn’t quite right and they didn’t know what to do. Well you can’t do that when you’re on stage in South Africa or Australia or anywhere. There’s no-one there to help. She’s an amazing DJ anyway, great music, great presence to be on the decks and I knew she’d be able to control the crowd. VIVA EMS: So what would you be looking for in a girl DJ in this year’s competition? LISA: Confidence, technical ability and just knowledge of music and it’s not all about just putting music together to be a DJ. It’s putting the music together in a selective way to build a set. somebody I know I could put on a stage. VIVA EMS: Why do you think that men are dominating the DJ world at the moment? LISA: They’re not dominating in every genre because Techno is embracing girls who are feisty girls as well. You go out there and you play a set and it’s your music choice and if people don’t get it then you feel like ‘why didn’t they get it?’ You’ve got to have the ability as well to read a crowd and be able to change and adapt to the music. You can’t walk off a dance floor with five thousand people which hasn’t happened yet, thankfully! You’ve got to know how to turn it around if you’re a good DJ. VIVA EMS: You are literally the Queen of dance music. I remember, when I was sixteen, seeing you at Cheeky Little Monkeys in Bournemouth with the Tidy Boys. You were playing some seriously cool Hard House tunes back then. Throughout your career you’ve taken on Trance, Breaks and, most recently, PsyTrance and Electronica and now Techno. Are there any other genres of dance music you haven’t explored yet that are on your radar? LISA: I’m always exploring and finding new electronic music and different sounds that I love, theres so much diversity out there these days who knows what I’ll come across next, that’s what keeps me excited. VIVA EMS: Carl Cox premièred your first Techno release ‘Space Manoeuvres’ at Ultra Fest and in Manchester at the Albert Hall, so how did you and Carl become friends? Are you guys going to be producing any stuff together? LISA: I would love to. yes. Even just to go over to Ibiza this year to see his night on a Tuesday would be enough for me and for him to play my tracks is amazing. When I went to see him in Liverpool recently, he said that I’ve got kind of like a progressive edge with a thundering tech baseline that no-one else has got and that’s why he liked my music. It’s different because I’m pulling loads of different styles. I’m like ‘wow’ I mean you can’t get better than Carl Cox, can you? I’ve known him for years and years and years. I was on his radio show years ago and now he’s doing the Techno and I’m producing some Techno which he heard about through the visual guy at House, who gave him some of my stuff. He’s just been really inspirational. He said he knows how hard it is anyway, as a DJ,

to change music styles and he said I’m kind of there to make the tunes like this which are different from anybody else and I’ll play them all day long because they’re different. VIVA EMS: Your Podcast has become a massive hit. Top two in the Mixcloud charts and in i-Tunes Top ten dance casts in the world! What can people, who haven’t had a listen yet, expect from it? LISA: I suppose they can expect an hour and a half of tunes that I basically love to play. I would never go and play a track that I don’t like, whether it’s called good at the time, I’m not that kind of person. I’ll always find the B side of a track or the double B or look a little bit more into it. I’m not someone that follows any kind of lead, I just do my own thing! Eighteen years I’ve been doing this and I’m thankful that people get the music. VIVA EMS: You’ve played across the world at some pretty amazing places. I’m just at the beginning of my career and have had a couple of pretty horrific gigs! Can you remember any really bad experiences you had at gigs when first starting out? LISA: Yeah, most of them in the beginning because you’ve just got to do them, don’t you? You’ve got to do the bad with the good at the end of the day but, if you don’t do those bad gigs, then sometimes you get it into your head, ‘I don’t want to do that, I don’t know what that’s going to be like’ and then, when you actually get there, it’s the best gig in the world. Don’t ever have any preconceptions and don’t ever be swayed by what a promoter tells you because you ask ‘Why did you book me then if that’s not the muisc you want me to play?’ VIVA EMS: Ya, right on girlfriend! So on the other hand, what is the gig that stands out for you when you thought, ‘actually this is it now, this is what I love doing, this is where I want to be?’ LISA: It’s probably the first time I was playing with Pete Tong. This was after being on the decks for not even six weeks or so. VIVA EMS: WOW, that’s amazing. You were only on the decks for six weeks and got this gig; tell me more! LISA: I know, what happened was I was working at Marks and Spencer and I used to come back home and play on my housemate’s decks when he wasn’t there. I was not even ready at all obviously but I was playing with Pete Tong, Robert Garnay, just everyone, in my first month. VIVA EMS: At today’s shoot with VIVA, you’ve been dressed by Jo from Jabio Womenswear, I know you’ve worked with her before. What do you like about the brand? LISA: It’s just so different, it’s edgy. Jo’s stuff is perfect, everything I would want somebody to make! I showed Jo some of my favourite clothes in my wardrobe and she created some pieces around these, she’s amazing! VIVA EMS: Going back to the female DJ scene, which female DJ is on your radar at the moment? LISA: Monika Kruse and Nicole Moudaber, two females showing the DJ world how it’s done and a very talented DJ/ Producer Justher a fellow Leicester girl who’s making big waves in the music scene. VIVA EMS: There’s a really good one in Manchester ha ha! LISA: Yes, really, really good one in Manchester, I think she’s a bit of a good scratcher too! VIVA EMS: From one of the biggest female DJs in the world, if not the biggest female DJ of all time, what top advice would you give to a DJ like myself just starting out?

LISA: Well it would be definitely find the style of music you want because people want you to have that uniform. What we book is what we expect but then again I’ve got that accolade of I’m going to play that! Just be good at your job; practice; don’t let anybody put you down; don’t follow any trend because it’s just going to be in and out; just play what you want to play. VIVA EMS: For you personally what has been your greatest achievement in your DJ career so far? LISA: I could say something about what I’ve achieved, the awards and stuff like that but probably not that. It’s the fact that I can help other people. I am inspiration and I didn’t even know. I was in Belfast the other weekend and this girl only DJs because she saw me at a club and at that moment went ‘I want to do this.’ I don’t realise sometimes that the music I’ve made has helped people through good times and bad times. I’ve played some of my stuff at their weddings. When I’m feeling down I’ll listen to music, it makes you feel better and if I have given that to somebody else as well to make them feel better, if they feel that way, that’s amazing. n Park Parklife: Heato We may be biased, but Manchester grown Parklife festival is one of our favourite festival moments of 2015. The 6th and 7th of June saw thousands of revellers make the pilgrimage to Manchester’s famous Heaton Park for a weekend of fantastic music and merriment. With performances from Ella Eyre, Labrinth, George Ezra, Grace Jones, Mark Ronson and the Twsited Twins to name but a few, Parklife 2015 was one of the best so far. We really can’t wait for next year.

orset Larmer Tree Festival : D Larmer Tree Festival was twenty-five years young this year and invited some of the biggest names of the music and comedy scene to join in the celebrations. 2015 saw the return of the legendary Tom Jones, performances by Levellers; The Magic Numbers and comedy from Bill Bailey and Russell Kane to name but a few! As always, in addition to the music Larmer Tree offered a variety of activities for all the family to do from Yoga and Tai Chi, talks and workshops including Bollywood, Cajun, Polka and Samba dance, Inta Africa Drumming, Ukulele Jam sessions, Comedy clowning and much more. Lamer Tree 2015 was an incredible display of creativity, music, comedy, talent and colour.

The day event took place in the beautifully atmospheric Pic-Nic area which was surrounded by trees and beautiful people. With music provided by Hunee B2B Antal, Funkineven, Nick Höppner and Ryan Elliott we were kept dancing all day before the main man, Derrick May, entered the DJ box and proved why he is one of the most in-demand DJs and why he deserves his legendary status.

Providing Detroit techno at its finest as the sun came down, we danced into the dark among the neon-lit trees and smiling face and it was just incredible! Big thanks to James Priestley, who closed the day event with a great set of deep house grooves and came to grab me to party with Derrick May in the DJ booth after his set. The party then moved to La Terrrazza, an open-air club full of culture and the party continued with Amir Alexander, Jeremy Underground and Delano Smith providing the soundtrack that kept us dancing until six in the morning. The secretsundaze parties, organised by Giles Smith and James Priestley, have become something of a legendary way to close out OFF Week in Barcelona and I already can’t wait for the next one. t gets bigger and better every year and 2015 was no exception. On June 6th the sun was out and the most insane line-up ever hit Wembley stadium for Capital’s Summertime Ball. One Direction were first up to perform to eighty thousand fans, warming them up for likes of Avicii, Little Mix, Olly Murs, Jason Derulo and loads more. The whole day was massive and you can check out all the highlights at capitalfm.com. If that wasn’t enough for one weekend, Heaton Park also saw over seventy thousand party people passing through on June 6th and 7th June for Parklife and it’s no surprise that we were all over it! Capital sorted out a stack of listeners with full weekend tickets while Wingman and Adam Brown were backstage all weekend interviewing the likes of James Bay, Rudimental, George Ezra and more. The happiest five-k on the planet also made a strong return to the Etihad Stadium where thirty thousand people rocked up for the Color Run. Capital will be teaming up with the University of Bolton to bring you Drive-In Movies at Bolton Macron Stadium and Lancashire County Cricket Club. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be giving away loads of tickets to be down at the front VIP style and you’ll bag a fresh new home-cinema system too - keep listening to Capital Breakfast for your chance to be there! On October 8th, we’ll be looking to top the one point one million pounds raised last year as part of Global’s ‘Make Some Noise’ charity. Madonna - Like a prayer What can I say? The first album on tape that I ever bought. The whole album is genius Pop at its best but this, to me, was Madonna in her prime superstar status. Photo and words: Karin Albinsson Since 1991, I have felt grateful to Stella. She rescued (kidnapped) a young Border Collie puppy that was being abused. I promised to look after the puppy while she was on tour and we called him Chorlton, as that was where he had been found. He ended up staying with my family for sixteen-and-a-half years. The best dog ever! STELLA GRUNDY is a singer, songwriter, actress and scriptwriter with her roots firmly in Manchester. Both her parents were from Beswick where she was born. The first part of her life was spent there in an old Terrace house with the loo in the back yard. The family then briefly moved to Chorlton but when Stella was four the family got a council house in Moston. ‘If we had stayed in Chorlton I would have been posh but I ended up living on The Miners Estate. As a lonely, sensitive child it toughened me up!’ Moston was an interesting if harsh place to be as a teenager with a great scene of gangs, skinheads, Teds and Mods. It had some very stylish people and a great youth club where Stella got to know older kids who listened to Bowie. School was boring but music exciting. Influenced by her Mum listening to jazz and taken to a concert at an early age, Stella decided to join the Church choir but spent most of the time giggling. It was when she joined the band ‘Marine Escape,’ that she started taking her singing and songwriting seriously. At the age of fourteen Stella was going into town to rehearse in the Decibel Studios and she also started to go to clubs. Soon after she was into the Manchester music scene and following the Mondays and the Roses. She left School at sixteen and got a job in a factory making leotards and from the forty pounds a week that she earned, she paid rent on her flat in Didsbury. At the age of eighteen she went back into education to do an Art Foundation course When Stella met Spencer in nineteen-ninety they formed the band Intastella that was active till nineteen ninety-seven. When asked it was no surprise that Stella said the music she has been most inspired by was that of Lou Reed. The storytelling in the music is important. Life changed when Stella became a Mother to Nico sixteen years ago. When Nico was one, Stella went back into education. Why acting? ‘A stupid idea, I didn’t want a proper job! Studying was very hard, so much work goes into acting to make it look like you are not acting!’ After graduating she started to write her own plays, one of which was based on her own experiences from the Manchester Music Scene. ‘The Rise and Fall of a Northern Star’ has toured throughout Britain and received great reviews. The play has garnered international interest and there are now plans to take it abroad. This autumn her first solo album ‘Stella Grundy – The Rise and Fall of a Northern Star’ will be released on John Robb’s label, Louder than War. Stella has also been commissioned to write, produce and tour with two new theatre productions. My last two questions; what character would you love to play? Sally Bowles out of Cabaret! ohnny Depp plays James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, a man that infamously made the FBI’s top ten most wanted list after working as an FBI informant. This unholy alliance was formed courtesy of his childhood relationship with John Connolly, now a significant figure in the Boston HQ of the Bureau. Whitey made a deal with the FBI to feed them information about organised crime in the area but, in doing do, he basically eliminated all his competition and put himself in a very powerful position. Very soon, he established himself as the Kingpin of the black market and when it comes to trouble, all routes lead to Whitey but his special status makes him Mr Teflon as many of Connolly’s colleagues start to ask questions. This role has some dark comedic moments that Depp proves adept at managing. A bit of a renaissance for an actor who has had a number of significant failures in the film business recently.

idley Scott has a long history with space in film. This latest endeavour is essentially ‘Castaway’ on Mars. Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead and left behind by the rest of the expedition crew when a freak storm takes place on Mars. Abandoned with no means of direct communication and very little in the way of supplies, Watney is forced to use every survival method he can to try and find a way of sustaining himself as well as getting a signal back to Earth to let them know that he is still alive. A film that captures the human spirit but thankfully doesn’t bring back ‘Wilson.’

The Maze Runner The Scorch Trials 11th September 2015

ames Dashner’s trilogy of books about a post apocalyptic world where groups of young adults are subjected to ‘trials,’ is the inspiration for this series. Having escaped the maze in the first film, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his collective find themselves faced with a new and even more baffling, dangerous and traumatic challenge as they enter into what appears to be the remains of a city destroyed. Not knowing who to trust and determined to survive, the group find that far from having escaped their worst fears, they are still to face them.

airy-tale films have been prominent for a while now and this one promises to be special. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) guides this re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s character ‘Peter Pan.’ Peter is snatched from his orphanage in the night and whisked off to ‘Neverland’ where he meets the fearsome ‘Blackbeard.’ (Hugh Jackman) The new world he discovers is at war and he is destined to be the saviour of one side of that conflict, if he can find his confidence. Levi Miller (Peter) is a plucky young Australian actor and, from what we can see, looks destined for big things. The world Wright creates in this film seems so vivid and detailed and the characters are equally as fascinating. he Capitol faces the ultimate challenge as the now rampant rebellion lead by the rejuvenated Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) draws together the dissenters in an attempt to liberate themselves from the tyranny of the governance of President Snow. This is the final part in this series and promises to be epic, action-packed and dramatic. Will Everdeen be able to overcome challenges, treachery, obstacles and moral dilemmas to face Snow and free the masses. After the third film served as a ‘set-up’ movie, expect a gripping and explosive finale with plenty of twists and turns.

t is difficult to criticise this film without talking about how implausible it is. There are some moments in it that made my skin crawl for the right and wrong reasons. A hyper-intelligent, manufactured, hybrid dinosaur is the antagonist as the theme park tries to boost its visitor numbers with a new attraction. Things go wrong when the beast escapes and runs riot. What possible weapon could be used to destroy this deadly creation? There are some poor acting performances in this film and some moments that are frankly ridiculous but it is dynamic and a fun watch.

he rotten odour emanating from this film continues to stink out the superhero sector of the film business. This is a sector that has twenty-four movies to be produced over the next three years. For every Dark Knight Trilogy, you get a ‘Daredevil’ and this is definitely in the later category. Even the director has attacked the film, stating that his version was much better than the one the studio released. One third of this film is reasonably good but then it becomes a lazy, weak mess of concepts that barely hold together.

Mad Max Fury Road - 5th October 2015

ne of the many remakes that we are being fed by Hollywood but it is fair to say that this is definitely one of the better ones. Tom Hardy stars as Max Rockatansky, an embittered road warrior in a post apocalyptic world where fuel and water are held in higher importance than life itself. I went to see this at the IMAX and was so impressed. The direction of this film made you feel as if you were in, behind or sometimes underneath, the vast array of vehicles involved. The biggest criticism people had of the film generally was that the story was more focussed on Furiosa’s (Charlize Theron) character than Max. This, in my opinion, is down to the fact that Hardy is still raising his profile in the US and it was difficult for the film to be sold strictly off his back. So this film has introduced the character to a new audience and we can expect the next film, currently in development, to give us the chance to really get see Tom Hardy go to work in the rôle. Make sure you have a good surround-sound system and, if you can, watch it in 3D. I recommend it.

Tom Cr uise once again leads his highlytalented team of super spies in a battle against a sinister organisation that appear s to have surpassed the IMF for secrecy and discretion. Faced with closure and being pur sued by the CIA, can Ethan keep the IMF going and tackle this dangerous entity? Also star s Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson and Sean Harris as an excellent bad guy!

Furious 7 - 7th September 2015

his colossal procession of pacy automotive action shows no signs of slowing down, as audiences continue to flock to their annual instalment of petrol-headed, testosterone-fuelled machinations, envisioned by a man named Diesel. Love it or HATE it, (guess which camp I’m in?) the success is undeniable and, though we are seven films deep, I decided to start my relationship with these characters here. All my reservations were confirmed as cars were jettisoned from aeroplanes and floated to the ground via parachutes, landing on a road and instantly hitting fifty-miles-per-hour in pursuit of the bad guys. There was a powerful sentiment due to the death of Paul Walker, a staple ingredient of this recipe and by far the most gifted actor in the cast. His loss is tragic and was respectfully and movingly dealt with in the film.
