The Radar
TOO HOT:
Sexy Red Lips One of my go-to, make-up looks this year! I totally believe there is nothing sexier than a bright, statement red lip. From a Classic Hollywood Red to the bold and fiery shades. Perfect for summer and definitely a handbag essential! It can turn any natural daytime look into sultry evening Glam!
WHAT’S HOT & WHAT’S NOT Monaco
This issue’s guest radar was brought to you by Coronation Street actress
Tisha Drew Merry
NOT HOT:
One of my favourite places to take a vacation! I must go to Monaco two or three times a year and, I have to say, I absolutely love it! I have relatives out there so it’s great to take a break from my busy schedule and catch up with family! Whether that be chilling by the beach, going to fabulous restaurants or SHOPPING!
Fake Tan Disasters Lately, I feel I am seeing more and more tanning mishaps! Although I am aware that living in the UK isn’t exactly the place to get that sexy summer glow, I feel that women should be either embracing their natural skin (and rocking it!) or going for a light natural glow! Nothing looks more ‘fake’ than a dark, patchy tan!
You’ve been tangoed! Jessica Simpson, Donald Trump and Katie Price
Taking Care Of Your Body For the last year or so I have totally changed my lifestyle. Food, beauty products and fitness! You name it, I’m doing it! It is so important to love your body and take care of it from the inside, out! My latest project is a fifty kilometre Trek for charity! A few work colleagues and myself will be taking part in Trekfest to raise money for the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity and Parkinson’s UK. It’s so healthy to challenge yourself every once in a while! Training for TrekFest > 06 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk
Littering Nothing infuriates me more than seeing people littering! Especially on the motorway! It is so disrespectful! Keep hold of it and wait until you see a bin or just keep it in the car? Let’s take care of the environment!
Negative People ^ Training At The David Lloyd
With the industry I work in and just day-to-day life, I think it can be so easy to find yourself surrounded by negative people. One of my top tips, to stay happy and be the best person you can be, is to surround yourself with loving positive people. People who will support you and take you high.

VIVAEMS TALKS TAKE THAT, PARKLIFE, IBIZA AND RUDIMENTAL WITH SIGMAS’ CAMERON EDWARDS.
T
here is no question about it, Sigma have been storming the drum and base music scene over the last few years; collaborating with big names such as Paloma Faith, Labrinth, Rita Ora, Ella Henderson, DJ Fresh and, most recently, Take That. With VIVA being such huge fans it was about time we caught up with local lad - and one half of Sigma Cameron Edwards. VIVAEMS: Cameron how are you? CAMERON: I’m great thanks I’m currently packing as I’m off to Cuba tomorrow, so I’m just running around the house packing loads of shit I don’t need! VIVAEms: Oh nice one. Is it a holiday or working? Cameron: Just a week chilling and then straight back for the Isle of Wight festival. VIVAEms: So you and Joe are VIVA’s Summer 2016 front cover boys. We actually had to tell Beyonces’ PR team that we couldn’t run her on the front cover anymore because we were running Sigma. That’s how much we love you guys. Cameron: Brilliant, that’s good. You can put that in the magazine, haha! VIVAEms: Massive exciting collaboration has just happen with you and Take That, I was a little concerned at first if would work but it has and the tune is really great. How did this collaboration come about? Cameron: We met them about two years ago at the BBC awards and they were really nice guys. We spoke to Gary really briefly and talked about doing something together but we thought that this would never happen because we were in different places to where we are now. Then there was an idea just floating around for a little while. Working together back and forth, it just seemed like the right time! We all decided on a track and when the tune started to come together it sounded quite epic and it kinda had that Sigma sound to it which was great. So yeah we just went with it and, I mean, it’s a little bit risky for both parties, cause it’s obviously a bit different for them and Take That is a bit different for our fans. We’ve kinda taken the two fan bases together and it’s worked really well. VIVAEms: I listen to an interview on Radio 1 from their Big Weekend and the Take That guys were so complimentary about Sigma. They were saying how you had even choreographed their moves that weekend in sound check and they had really enjoyed working with you. Cameron: Yeah they are really down to earth guys. They were a pleasure to work with and Gary Barlow, he’s written so many massive tunes, whether you like them or not you have to have respect for the guy. It’s been twenty-five years and they continue doing it, so it was a pleasure to work with them and there was a mutual respect going on. VIVAEms: Did you buy any Take That singles when you were younger? Cameron: That was my sister’s thing. She’d have pictures on her walls. She used to love Howard! She still does, she keeps telling me to get tickets to their show. I’ve never actually bought a Take That single but I kinda know them all through my sister. >

fan bases together and it’s worked really well...
VIVAEms: As well as collaborating with Take That you guys have worked with some supersonic amazing artists, Paloma Faith, Labrinth, Rita Ora, Ella Henderson, DJ Fresh. Are there any funny studio stories working with any of these guys? Cameron: Paloma is really quirky and the other day she came down and did the rehearsals for the Big Weekend. We had two days of rehearsals, it is more about what she was wearing and some of the stuff she comes out with. I can’t even remember what she said, but she’s one in a million. She’s wicked, she’s quite charismatic and a real character. VIVAEms: You and Joe, you guys met when you were at Leeds University? At a drum and bass night, is that right? Cameron: Yeah, I used to run a couple of bass nights and I booked him to play a couple of the events. VIVAEms: Has your love for music always been drum and bass or have you got a soft spot for any other genres?
music. Are there any tips you’ve got for me in the producing world? Cameron: Always draw influences from what’s around you, because you’ve got to VIVAEms and Chadders backstage with make sure your sound is Sigma at The Ritz. fitting in with everyone else’s but it’s also kinda cool to not always pay and we went to the after-party at Pikes. It was a attention to what’s around you because then really crazy night. you’re making something that’s not like anyone else’s sound. For a lot of our careers we were Cameron: Ha ha yes, I remember. It’s just imitating other people’s stuff. It’s quite always a bit crazy at Pikes’ parties. We normally hard to find your own sound, it took us a while like to try and chill away from the madness. It’s to do that but you’ll get there in the end. It just always nice to get a boat and just go out to sea to takes a little time so just keep your head down get away from it all but I like going to Mambos and pursue it. to watch the sunset. That’s something you VIVAEms: So Parklife in Manchester is coming up for you guys, you’re playing on the Saturday but will you be sticking around all weekend? I’m DJ-ing in the VIP area Sunday night so it would be super cool to say that Sigma came to watch me ha ha!
“We’re loving the new Drake album; he’s amazing. We’re massive fans of that sound.” Cameron: We don’t really listen to drum and bass when we’re not making it and it’s not exactly the most relaxing genres. It’s quite hectic so there’s obviously quite a lot of different types out there but at the moment we’re loving the new Drake album; he’s amazing. We’re massive fans of that sound. We love hip hop, randomly loads of jazz; we like a whole mix, we’re torn between Drake and jazz! VIVAEms: Do you ever think that, down the line, you might ever produce any house music? Cameron: We’d love to. We’ve got a couple of tunes that we started which are house beats. The next single which we’re in the process of sorting, it’s not drum and bass, it’s actually, I don’t know what you’d call it, I guess it’s all kinds of music! So we’re gonna use different stuff to switch up our sound a little bit because I feel like we’ve done a lot of the drum and bass, which obviously we love but we’re just going to try and switch it up a little bit. VIVAEms: The reason why I asked about the house music is I’m a house DJ and it would be wicked to play some of your tunes in my set. I’ve also started producing my own house
Cameron: I think we’re going to the Isle of Wight on Friday and coming straight back for Parklife on Saturday but then we’ve got to go back down for Bulmers afterwards. We’ve got to get a private jet down but, without a doubt, it would have been great to see your set. VIVAEms: You are living around these parts at the moment, right? Cameron: I’m actually originally from Surrey, down south but I moved up here six years ago now and live in Altrincham. I love it up here though. It’s a really cool place to live, the vibe, the people, everything’s just much nicer up north! VIVAEms: Manchester have just crowned their new Mr Manchester. If you won Mr Manchester what would you change about the city? Cameron: I’d create a faster tram service straight to the city from Altrincham.
should definitely see.
VIVAEms: So, like me the VIVA team are massive fans of Sigma but we are also massive fans of Rudimental. We can just never decide who’s the best and if we were going to give a VIVA award to the best drum and bass act of 2016 it would be very hard to make a choice between you two. Have you got anything you would like to say, to persuade us to choose Sigma? Cameron: Obviously we respect Rudimental. We think they’re wicked and we like their tracks, the guys are lovely. I think most of their releases this year are cover-based tracks and they release quite a lot of house music so if you’re going to choose purely based on drum and base released music then you should probably pick us. I still respect Rudimental and I’m not dissing them at all. VIVAEms: Okay so last question, my all time favourite Sigma tune has to be Nobody To Love, it’s my happy tune. I’ll put it on if I’m ever feeling sad, plus it completely gets me dancing! What’s your all time favourite happy tune? Cameron: It would have to be Michael Jackson P.Y.T. Put that on and it just brings out the smiles. Twitter: @sigmahq Website: sigmahq.com
VIVAEms: So I checked out the Sigma website and the live dates section, you’ve got such a busy summer. I saw you’re doing some dates in Ibiza, one being Ibiza Rocks. We actually saw you guys at Ibiza Rocks last year www.vivamanchester.co.u k | VIVA | 23

ummer’s coming and the hunt for the perfect bikini continues. Drench Swimwear was created by April. A girl who pursued her love for swimwear with an ethical trade, making both the customer and manufacturer happy. The ultra-sexy and cool swimwear is handmade in Brazil, created with great fitting up-scaled basics, it’s the go-to for the perfect look this Summer, check out our interview with the brains behind the beauty here.
Drench Swimwear is a massive name in the fashion industry now, how did it all start? Okay so, it
started two years ago. I was already a fashion designer. After graduating with a degree, I worked in the fashion industry for three or four years. I hadn’t designed swimwear in my other jobs. It was just always a passion of mine, so it was just out of the love of wanting to do something really fun and a bit different.
clubs but they’ve never been right or fitted the brand. I think the girls in uniform at Ocean is a really nice touch.
What does Summer 2016 have in store?
Obviously Ocean Beach Club is a pretty big thing, my new range launches tomorrow night. (20th May ’16) I’ve still kept the new range solid colours, no print again but I’ve got a new fabric that’s called the ‘Drench wave knit’ which has got a crinkle in it. I’ve also focussed on just bikinis this time, cause I feel like they’re good for tanning and beach parties. The colours have been refreshed, so it’s all good. I’ve also secured a place at Miami swim week, handing out our Drench swim bags. I really need to hit America!
“I think the image is a powerful woman with a flirty side and a good bum!”
The brand has also become Ocean Beach Ibiza’s uniform for girls, how did that happen? So basically, we got spotted when
we did the event at Grand Pacific last year. Somebody who is head of marketing at Ocean Beach contacted me and said they wanted us to provide the uniforms, so it was a really lucky opportunity.
They look amazing! It’s been hectic! I’m excited,
and hopefully it will lead me to quite a good route. I’ve had loads of questions about collaborations with other brands and
Can you see yourself going to different sectors other than swimwear? I’m not sure,
I’d quite like to do a little surfer range. I think it would look really cool with our swimwear range. That could introduce print as well and could be an opportunity to collaborate with somebody as well.
How would you describe Drench as a style? I think it’s super sexy, basics, that are good for all occasions, party, sunbathing or exploring and I think the image is a powerful woman with a flirty side - and a good bum! drenchswim.com facebook.com/drenchswimwear twitter.com/DrenchSwim words: Sophie Parkin

Sarah Baily: The Designer
Injecting Fun Into Leather Bags words: Megan Storey
I
ntroducing Sarah Baily, interiors expert turned handbag designer who specialises in fun leather bags and accessories, her products are simple, bold and high quality.
Sarah completed a degree in graphic design then decided that it wasn’t for her. Appreciating the tactile side of interiors - compared with the digital aspect of graphics - she decided to do an Interior Design course at UAL. After which she worked for London-based interior designer, Abigail Ahern. Here she designed leather cushions and discovered her love for the material. From the leather cut-offs, she made little purses which proved hugely popular with her friends and sisters and she was soon receiving orders for more. After this surge of popularity, she decided to develop the range using workshops in London to manufacture a range of brightly coloured clutches, totes and messenger bags. Her first collection didn’t go unnoticed and she was soon approached by Jaeger to produce a collection for them. Admitting this was a highlight of her career she notes, “It was in their store window on Regent Street so I was really excited because I was still quite new then.” This season her SS16 collection has an empowering Girls theme and, with feminism being such a hot topic at the minute, it seems particularly relevant. When asked where the idea came from Sarah said, “That was actually from a friend of mine. We all used to live together when we first moved to London and we were like a little girl-gang!”
Her newest collection also features leather jackets for the first time, in daring, metallic hues branded with the GIRLGANG slogan. When asked whether she’d branch out into more clothing, Sarah admitted that she would like to but, not having studied fashion, it was a nerve-racking prospect. However she is excited to experiment with leather even more, adding, “I like to keep everything really simple anyway, like a simple skirt in a bright metallic pink - I would love to try that!” As the brand is all about having fun, Sarah claims she’d love to see the sassy music icon, Gwen Stefani, wearing one of her designs, loving her rock and roll attitude. She would also love to collaborate with eccentric British designer Shrimps because of their shared love of texture and colour. As for the future, Sarah would like to see her products in a lot of the big department stores as well as opening a shop of her own. “I’d like to have a little boutique, maybe in the West End of London. Somewhere that’s a really fun, exciting place to visit and buy bags!” Check out the Sarah Baily SS16 collection at: sarahbaily.com Follow Sarah Baily at facebook.com/BailyBags and instagram.com/bailybags/

et off your summer skin with a natural pop of colour - cream eye shadows in pastel tones blend easily. Build up your skin coverage if you need to and opt for a small brush to lightly blend over any problem areas. Use a liquid concealer such as Mac and, for dry areas, opt for a damp brush to ease the blending process. A spritz of hyaluronic acid spray from B. will also liven up dehydrated skin. Avoid piling on powder, it’s summer so let it shine! Products used: MAC Select Cover-up Concealer, £15.50 and B. Hyaluronic acid facial spritz, £7.99

he key to great make-up and looking natural in summer is a good base. This means you can apply make-up in small amounts and add definition where needed. Products that contain an SPF keep skin protected and looking youthful. Skin must be well hydrated, so start with an Essence lotion from B. skin-care to lock moisture into the skin.
In summer, avoid foundation and go for a lightweight tint instead. Three-in-one products, like Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, give a glow, natural base and SPF coverage in one application. Choose waterproof mascara, it’s holiday and heat proof and longer-lasting. A tinted lip balm from Burts Bees will add a flush of colour while keeping your lips silky soft.

t’s cool for men to wear makeup these days but it’s essential to get the right products and the right brushes to apply them as applying anything with a brush means a smoother, more natural finish. Check out my new range of brushes at www.cassielomas.com and get the lowdown on exactly what they do before deciding what you need.
A good concealer will airbrush your skin and get rid of uneven skin-tone. Don’t clog up your skin, conceal blemishes and use BB cream for a touch of colour. Dr Jart BB cream can be applied with a large fluffy brush for a lightweight finish. Remember, the bigger the brush the more blended the product!

ith so many make-up schools opening across the UK, it’s hard to know which are good and which are not. Aspiring MUAs (Make-up Artists) get blinded by low prices and enroll at make-up schools no-one has ever heard of (probably for good reason) just to leave a few tearful months later with no improved skills, wishing they had invested their money in a better course at a better make-up academy. One of the better make-up academies is definitely the Cassie Lomas Make-Up Academy owned by the famous Cassie Lomas, make-up artist to such stars as Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Lady Gaga and Iggy Azaela. It’s not just the famous name that makes the academy so popular. CLMA offers a wide range of make-up courses, aimed mainly at girls who want to become MUAs. The courses include Media Makeup and Hairstyling; Fashion Make-up; Hairstyling and Bridal and Occasion Make-up. There are also Evening Courses, Masterclasses and a Finishing School. If, however, you fancy a girly fun afternoon then sign yourself up to a one-off Afternoon course, with lessons accompanied by prosecco and afternoon tea. The students get the best possible education due to the fact Cassie handpicks all her tutors herself. The tutors spend a lot of one-onone time with their students who won’t ever have to fear the future once they graduate, as long as they are dedicated and work hard. Cassie explains, “We help them get work experience after they finish. Everybody, when they finish, goes on to the events team. It tends to be the ones who do absolutely anything that go on to get the better jobs and succeed a lot more. It takes years of hard work.” So, wanna-be MUAs, what are you waiting for? Katie McGlynn reports MY SUMMER SO FAR…
What haven’t I been doing? I’ve been to a couple of weddings, going out for drinks with friends, seeing my Mum’s horses and spending time with my family. I’ve really been concentrating on my health and fitness to prepare for the 50K trek that I took part in alongside the rest of Team Vital. I’ve been on two short breaks so far- a last minute holiday to Tenerife and a cheeky weekend in Mallorca, where I stayed at the BH Mallorca @BHMallorca.
TINKERS’ TALES…
Sinead got herself in a bit of trouble a couple of weeks ago after she kissed Aiden. She’s never looked at him in that way before and now just feels mortified. Sinead adores Chesney and doesn’t want their relationship to end, so you can expect to see her trying to reconcile and spending time with the rest of the Tinker family. The Corrie cast had a great night at the Soap Awards. I’m happy Sally and Joe won ‘Best Comedy Couple’ and pleased for the whole cast of Emmerdale for their win.
BRAVING BRECON BEACONS…
At the beginning of June, I took on the TrekFest challenge with some of my Corrie co-stars, my publicist Laura Graham, VIVA Ems, make-up artist Carly Guy and a couple of the guys from Ultimate Performance, to raise money for the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity and Parkinson’s UK. We had such a giggle, and it was for such a great cause. I took so many snacks to keep my energy up - even vacuum-packed tuna.

MY FAVOURITE HOTSPOTS...
MANCHESTER
It’s hard for me to pick just one of the many places in Manchester that I really like going to. At the moment, I’m really enjoying Spinningfields, especially Grand Pacific and the Oast House. It’s the perfect area when the weather behaves and the sun comes out to play. The Northern Quarter is my go-to destination for a great night out and, if I want a delicious meal, there’s nowhere I’d rather go than Rosso restaurant - it’s my favourite.
MY DOWN TIME...
When I’m not at work or training at the gym, I’m going to spend the rest of my summer chilling with friends, going to the cinema, going out and I’m sure I’ll fit a few more holidays in.

Launches e-boutique for its new line of ready-to-wear clip-in extensions
Already one of the UK’s most reputable hair extensions brands, Tatiana Karelina is proud to announce the launch of its online boutique for a new line of ready-to-wear, all-In-one, clip-in extensions. Offering premium, ethically-sourced Russian hair as a salon-applied or bespoke made-to-measure clip-in extension service. Now customers from around the world can have the same salon-quality, clip-in hair extensions - made from hand-tied weft - with a click of a button.
I
n line with the brand’s commitment to sustainable packaging yet retaining the Russian influence which is a core element of Tatiana Karelina’s brand heritage, the company has created its packaging in the form of the country’s most famous symbol, the Matryoshka. Each set of clip- ins will come in a Matryoshka doll, with limited edition runs for each design. The doll will not only protect the clip-ins against all the hazards that may be encountered during transit, but it also doubles as a gorgeous, woman’s clutch. Tatiana Karelina clip-in extensions are a luxurious alternative to salon-applied extensions. Using a multi-layering system, combining five wefts into a single clip-in piece, the All-inOne injects the same body and density which previously could only be achieved using several clip-in pieces together. The All-In-One provides the ultimate versatility and the perfect temporary solution to achieve length, thickness and volume making it the ultimate everyday accessory. Tatiana Karelina comments on the company’s new product launch, “Our new, ready-to-buy range is unlike anything on the market. The vast majority of clip-ins today use thick processed Chinese or Indian hair, in single block colours and require several machine-fabricated wefts to achieve a voluminous look. In the end, what you have are pieces that easily tangle and mat. They feel heavy and do not look natural or blend seamlessly. We believe that we have created something truly special. By making our wefts by hand, using gravity-defying Russian hair we are able to incorporate multiple hues of a colour into a single weft and and make each weft significantly slimmer and the hair more secure than could be achieved with a machine. With slimmer wefts and lighter Russian hair comes increased comfort, while more secure means less shedding and this greatly extends the clip-in’s life.” The ready-to-buy clip-ins will be sold alongside the company’s bespoke madeto-measure clip-ins which have a fantastic reputation for quality and craftsmanship. The ready-to-buy line will initially be sold in six shades in the eighteen inch length at an RRP of £375.

make Gratitude your Attitude
With healer to the stars Suzanne Elizabeth
Y
our attitude will impact on every aspect of your life, so why not make sure it’s filled with positivity and motivation to help keep you in that happy place. Being grateful is all about your awareness of how lucky you are to have even the most basic things that others take for granted. We spend most of our time thinking about what we want instead of what we already have. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never feel content. Benefits of gratitude. Emotionally, you’ll feel happier, more relaxed and more resilient. Socially, you’ll build deeper relationships, be kinder and more sociable with people. Health-wise, you’ll sleep better, have increased energy and get sick less often. Personally, you’ll feel more optimistic, confident and less materialistic. Career-wise, you’ll be better organised, with a clear mind; improving goals and decision-making. 46 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n ch ester.c o.uk
How to be more grateful... 1: Keep a gratitude journal. It’s surprising what it will make you aware
of and, from a manifesting point of view, it will bring more things into your life to be grateful for. Win, Win! 2: Learn to change your mindset. When you’re having a bad day, don’t spiral into the depths of negativity, just take a moment to realise the lesson life is trying to show you and be grateful you’ve experienced it so that you can do things differently next time. Understand life is all about lessons and we are all certainly still learning. 3: Become involved with a cause close to your heart. Not only will you feel appreciated, you’ll gain a greater appreciation for life and feel good for giving back. Brace yourself for an explosion of love in your heart when you open yourself up to the endless possibilities of how giving can fill you with joy and gratitude. 4: Each day mindfully bounce into life with energy and enthusiasm after all you’re lucky to be alive. Make an active choice to enjoy every moment and don’t let others burst your bubble. Be aware of the energy vampires and give them a wide berth! 5: Become aware of how much you complain, criticise or gossip in your everyday life. Notice the amount of energy you’re wasting. Time to put that energy to better use and start to live the life you deserve, full of love, laughter and things to be grateful for. Keep shining. Suzanne Elizabeth, Holistic Coach. HOLISTIC
The
EXPERIENCE Adopting an holistic approach to life means focussing directly on the mind, body and spirit, enabling individuals to gain greater self awareness. Holistic Coaching is becoming more and more popular, providing individuals with the tools required to create a more balanced and fulfilled life.
Holistic Coach and VIVA health columnist, Suzanne Elizabeth is an expert in her field; making a difference to people’s lives and empowering them to achieve their dreams. Her one-to-one sessions are renowned for helping overcome stress, anxiety and depression.
After four sessions, VIVAEms was sure the positive energy had started to run through her body more permanently. As she said, “I’m feeling more grounded as a person plus my head feels way more screwed on.” She even commented that friends and family had noticed a change in her.
VIVAEms visited Suzanne to check out the alternative world of holistic healing. “I wasn’t completely sure what an Holistic Coach actually did!” Ems admitted, before her initial session. Turns out, Suzanne inspires people to look deeper into their mind, body and soul, tailoring bespoke sessions, unique to each client’s needs.
However the most notable result from her holistic experience is that the tinnitus which VIVAEms usually suffers from is starting to improve. “During my second Reiki healing session, Suzanne was drawn to the negative energy round my head and ears and a couple of days later I noticed, to my utter surprise, that the ringing and the washing machine sound in my left ear had completely stopped!”
Suzanne works with a whole host of people, from pop stars to sportsmen - a few of her clients even have Skype sessions with her when they are working in other countries to bring balance to their busy lives. She also runs workshops, four times a year to teach the basics of energy healing. One key element of VIVAEms’ sessions is Reiki healing, where a universal energy is channelled through the practitioner so their client opens themselves up like a vessel, flushing out negative energy. “I have never experienced anything like this in my life before now,” VIVA Ems admitted, “It’s such an out-ofthis-world feeling. I felt like I was floating.”
After her latest session, VIVAEms is confident that her body is really responding to the healing, accepting Suzanne’s holistic methods and allowing her to reach deeper into her psyche than ever before. In the coming months Suzanne is offering several new courses, including Beyond the Physical and Manifesting Mysteries. Teaching participants to harness new energies and look beyond their awareness to dramatically change their lives. SuzanneElizabethHolisticCoach.co.uk words: Megan Storey
Part 2 – The Stress response and how to manage it. Head PT Matt Warner reports… We are all familiar with stress. It dictates our mood, our decision-making and our sleep on an almost daily basis but what do we mean by ‘stress?’ How does it impact our bodies and minds and how can we combat the negative effects of chronic stress? STRESSORS CAN INCLUDE:
- Poor dietary choices - Poor sleep quality - Sedentary lifestyle - Family stress - Relationship stress - Travel - Dehydration What happens to our body in a stressful situation? Evolution has provided us with the ‘fight or flight response’ to stress. When we encounter a stressful situation, the body will release stress hormones (Adrenaline and Cortisol) from the adrenal glands to either fight the stress or run away from it. In turn the body releases a huge amount of stored energy in the form of glycogen (carbohydrates) and triglycerides (fats) into the circulatory system for use. Now, In a healthy individual, the stress response quickly returns to its baseline. However, one fundamental difference in modern society is the sedentary lifestyle most of us lead. If we do not move, the energy released will often be stored as fat.
TIPS TO DEAL WITH STRESS:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
STRESSFUL SITUATION
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM KICKS IN TO AID FIGHT OR FLIGHT
BLOOD VESSEL DILATION HEART RATE INCREASE INCREASED BLOOD PRESSURE
GASTRIC BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTED DIGESTION SLOWS
Ensure a regular sleeping pattern. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Turn your phones and laptops off thirty minutes prior to sleep. The light from the screens can disrupt sleep quality.
RELEASE OF GLYCOGEN AND LIPIDS INTO THE BLOODSTREAM FOR USE TO ‘FIGHT OR FLIGHT’
Eat a nutrient-rich diet including adequate protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates. Stay hydrated. Move more. If you work in an office, then get up and move. Use a pedometer to track your activity and shoot for more steps each day. Use relaxation techniques including, meditation, walks and remedial therapies

TREKFEST
Team Vital Take On Brecon Beacons In Aid Of Super Josh And Parkinson’s UK...
T
rekFest, the Ultimate UK Charity Challenge, is by far one of the toughest things any member of TeamVital - who raise amazing sums for The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity and Parkinson’s UK - has ever done. Coronation Street actresses Catherine Tyldesley, (Eva) Tisha Merry (Steph) and Katie McGlynn (Sinead) braved the arduous 50K hike through the hills of the picturesque Brecon Beacons, alongside other clients and friends of Manchester based publicity firm, Vital Management and Publicity. Other team members included: Vital’s Laura Graham; VIVAEms; Andrew Cheung and Matt Warner from Ultimate Performance Manchester; Dawn Fidler - Super Josh’s Mum and Carly Guy. Cath, Matt and Andrew stormed ahead and completed the trek in twelve hours, while the remaining team members were having too much fun with VIVAEms’ portable speakers and TrekFest mix, dancing on bridges and bumping into stag parties. So it comes as no surprise it took them fifteen hours to cross the finish line! “Mentally and physically, it was the most intense thing any of us have ever done,” said our very own VIVAEms. She then went on to say, “The whole team really bonded. Everyone had moments where they wanted to give up but we supported each other the whole way round. It was such an honour to do the trek with Dawn.” (Super Josh’s Mum) VIVA caught up with Dawn after the trek to ask about her best and worst moments.“The best part of this whole experience has been getting to know you guys, bonding with you and facing the challenge together. The most difficult bit was completing the last bit of the trek in the dark. I kept thinking someone was behind me. Your mind plays crazy tricks on you in the dark.” Publicist Laura Graham, who organised the trip, said if it hadn’t of been for such a great bunch of people, the belly laughs and fun, she wouldn’t have got through the challenge. “The thing that kept me going was the camaraderie, the fun and the utter delirium where we just looked at each other and started falling about laughing – we stuck together and motivated each other and this makes me so proud of the team.” Katie and Tisha also found TrekFest tough, and often wanted to cry. Their hardest moment was just before the finish line when it was pitch black. “Going through the fields in the darkness was scary and the blisters were difficult to contend with,” said Tisha. TeamVital would like to thank Sarah, Matthew, Jess and Richard from Global Adventure Challenges for making our adventure a reality, and all the Central Brecon Mountain Rescue Team for ensuring we did it without injury! Team Vital would like to thank Regatta Outdoors, for the fab trek clothing; Jimbag, for the cool rucksacks; David Lloyd Leisure in Cheadle and Ultimate Performance Manchester for all the fitness training. Most importantly, thanks to everyone who sponsored Team Vital. It motivated the team no end, especially when we were exhausted or in pain, knowing that so many kind and generous people had helped us raise in excess of ten thousand pounds for our chosen charities. P.S. VIVAEms would like to thank the lovely Welsh lads who provided us with a can of beer, making the last 5K doable.

pring, what spring? It has been a complete wipe-out for the first part of the year with rain non-stop and, bizarrely, snow in late May but for the past few weeks the ‘sun has had his hat on’ and temperatures have risen. So let’s hope summer is finally on its way and how excited am I? I’m dying to get outside with Olive to show her a whole new world of exploration and, now that she’s more robust, walking and happiest when she’s running around and playing, we are going to have endless adventures and I’m sure we will both create some treasured lifetime memories together. Living in the country, the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, our house

is nestled in grounds with an array of wildlife such as deer, rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers, a variety of other birds and not forgetting our beloved dog - Hungarian Wirehaired Vizela, Ralph (Olive’s BBF) - so she is one lucky girl to be living among so much nature. Anyone who knows me is aware of the fact that I’m partial to a spot of gardening (hence the nickname from the VIVA girls of Granny Garlic!) so Olive and I are going (weather permitting) to spend as much of our time outside as possible and, if she shares my love of gardening, I can’t wait to teach her how to grow and crop her own vegetables – I may have to wait until she is a little older for this, maybe next year. >

Mine & Olives top baby buys... Mud pies, worms and a whole lot of imagination are my earliest memories from playing outside in the garden but the world we live in today is fast-paced and miles away from my eighties childhood. Advanced technology - iPads, Xbox and YouTube TV - is Frank and Elfie’s (Olive’s brother and sister’s) favourite pastime. I want to try and deter Olive from this tech world of madness for as long as possible. I’m not saying it’s bad, I enjoy the perks of it as much as the next person especially when I need a break to get a few simple chores done but Olive is wrapped around my ankles kicking off. To fix this minor meltdown, I switch the TV on and Peppa Pig saves the day! So I’ve been on a hunt to dig out and find VIVA’s top toddler interactive toys to get our little ones’ imaginations flowing whilst entertaining them in the world of creative play outside. I have tested them out with Olive and I know what has worked for us so I can recommend that you try out these top toys for your little ones and add them to your shopping list. now’s the time to get your house in order. And if you’re an overseas student it can be overwhelming. I recommend using an estate agent that has a property finding service like us, because they should be able to handle the red tape on your behalf. For example dealing with issues like credit ratings which can be tricky if you’re not a UK resident and also short listing properties that are suitable for you if you’re not able to view them first yourself. Did you know that people make the decision to buy your home with the first few minute of seeing it? So first impressions really do count. If you’re selling summer is all about kerb appeal and keeping your garden and driveway looking inviting and as stunning as you can. It can be hard to keep on top of so consider a gardening service once every two weeks – it could be an investment that really pays off. In the news has been the increase in stamp duty for those looking to buy another property. As of 1 April, 2016 you have to fork out an extra three per cent in Stamp Duty if you are buying an additional home. We’re still seeing what the impact is going to be on housing as there has definately been a decrease level of interest from ‘buy-to-let’ investors since April, which could affect prices in the rental market.

Homing in on Prestwich
As someone who was born and bred in Prestwich, I can see first-hand this thriving community continues to go from strength to strength. It’s just 12 minutes away by tram from Manchester City Centre and boasts superb schools, a stunning conservation area and a bustling ‘village’ with all the amenities including supermarkets, independent retailers, cafes, restaurants and bars as well as our own property agency behind the infamous ‘Big Yellow Door’. So if you’re considering a move here, act quickly while prices are a fraction of those in Didsbury, Chorlton and other ‘hotspots’ and see what the area can offer. In terms of property to buy or rent there’s a huge range to suit most pockets and tastes. These include beautiful ‘tardis’ terrace in the sought-after leafy Gardener Road area , family-homes near the many excellent schools, state-of-the-art apartments in the cool, contemporary Radius building and even rural idylls near the stunning conservation area. It’s also good value for renters, you’ll get more bang for your buck and lots more space than the city centre. And there’s a fab nightlife so you can stay in the ’village’ but if you are heading to town it’s just a tenner cab ride if you’re not a tram person. The rooms are spectacular (we’re talking Penthouses with Hot-tubs, here) but we felt that it was only right to talk to the company and ask if we could try out the amazing new bar. (For the sake of proper research, of course) The bar offers a space for guests to enjoy a relaxed environment with a good atmosphere and tasty drinks, whether it’s a fruity cocktail or a nice cold beer on a summer’s day. If you have experienced the high standards for which the hotel is rightly renowned, you’re bound to enjoy their breathtaking new bar. he definition of a Mustang is ‘a wild, toughly-built horse found on the plains of America’ and the stunning new Ford Mustang is certainly a wild ride! This latest powerful, dynamic model - made famous by the Hollywood legend Steve McQueen after he drove the fabulous 1968 390 GT Fastback around the streets of San Fransisco in the film ‘Bullitt’ - is a worthy successor to carry the iconic Mustang badge. This version is powered by the Eco Boost, two-point-three-litre or fivelitre, V8 block so, of course, I opted for the stunning five-litre flame red coupe as my ‘ride.’ After firing up the throaty V8, I immediately felt like a movie star. With heads turning and looks from other drivers, I knew I was behind the wheel of something special. Beautiful on the outside, the inside is an exciting place to be with the Mustang wrapping itself around you while giving
you great all-round visibility and with its classic, retro Mustang switches coupled with the latest Ford Sync2 touchscreen technology - you can choose your driving mode settings and all your in-car entertainment. Push down on the throttle and the throaty V8 gallops away but its tuned, ball-joint front suspension and independent rear suspension gives you the confidence to push your ride to the limit. If you really want that ‘Bullitt’ feeling then try the unique Ford Electron Line Link Lock that lets you lock the front wheels and rev up the rear wheels before launching you - but that’s only for when you’re on the race track! You can get the new Ford Mustang in the coupé or convertible versions with prices starting at £32k and you can take the Mustang for a ride at Evans Halshaw in Old Trafford Manchester or go to www.evanshalshaw.co.uk. words: Jack Marsden, The GT Driver.

Abu Dhabi Cadabra THE MAGICAL ISLAND...
Four Seasons Hotel Executive Suite
Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi
T
o celebrate ten years of flying from Manchester to Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority invited me on the adventure of a lifetime to visit the magical island itself.
Flying in the incredible business class lounge with Etihad Airways, the seven hour journey flew by and I soon found myself landing in the beautiful city of Abu Dhabi, immersed in an intense urban heat and the excitement to start exploring. Etihad Airways is the national carrier of the UAE and flies directly to Abu Dhabi three times daily from Heathrow, twice daily from Manchester and five times a week from Edinburgh. British Airways flies its new 787-9 Dreamliner daily from Heathrow. We stayed at the luxury, five-star Four Seasons, a hotel which had only officially opened on 8th May 2016. Housed in a thirty-four storey glass tower right on the water, the hotel welcomes guests with bright, open spaces including expansive views of both the city skyline and the
sparkling waves of the Arabian Gulf. In each room, a customisable bed makes a bold statement, emphasising the Four Season’s commitment to giving guests a good night’s rest. (comically nicknamed in house as Fat and Sexy beds) For a hotel that had only just opened, the service and staff were impeccable, with a management team who couldn’t do enough to help. The hotel also offered an extensive swimming pool and high-tech gym facilities. As well as an amazing roof-top social scene with cocktail bar and skyline views, the perfect location for DJs and performers to entertain in the peak month of September. Our adventures commenced with a trip on The Yellow Boats. Speeding along the Arabian Gulf, it was such a unique way to see the jaw-dropping, new developments and stunning coastline. From there we >

went to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the most important architectural treasures of contemporary United Arab Emirates society. The majestic building was truly breathtaking, chandeliers of forty million Swarovski crystals hung in the entrance and worshippers kneel to pray on the world’s largest hand-made carpet. It felt almost dream-like. As tourists we were required to adhere to the strict dress code, covering up our bodies in the traditional abaya, however once inside everyone is considered equal. From the serenity of the Mosque, the next day brought new wonders. Our first stop was the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. In the UAE falconry is widely practiced for sport and the power and beauty of the falcon is greatly treasured. Watching anxious owners from across the region delivering their hooded ‘patients’ in person, I was quick to realise that this was a much-needed and much-loved facility. Abu Dhabi isn’t a city that does things by halves. This fact was further reinforced as I found myself shaking, queuing for Flying Aces, the highest rollercoaster loop on the planet, contained within the world’s largest indoor theme park Ferrari World - where, for a price, visitors can rent and drive Ferraris. However
Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital
Desert Safari With Arabian Adventures
for those without an inner adrenaline junkie, the Yas Marina Circuit is probably more up their street. At night visitors have the chance to walk or cycle around Abu Dhabi’s iconic Grand Prix circuit. The renowned deserts of Abu Dhabi were something I was really excited about and you don’t have to travel far from the city before the desert takes hold. With Arabian Adventures we drove 4x4s through the monumental dunes, rode camels in the harsh summer heat and lay beneath the stars in a Bedouin-style camp - it was the stuff of dreams. Whilst on the island, the food was a definite highlight. Hotspots around the city include Al Fanar Restaurant and Café - which is located in the Venetian Village at The Ritz-Carlton, 18 Degrees at Hyatt Capital Gate, (which is also known as the ‘Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi.’ This incredible building inclines a world-record eighteen degrees, hence the name of the restaurant) Hickory’s situated at the heart of Yas Links, the only true links golf course in Arabia. We also had the opportunity to take part in an Arabic cooking masterclass at Yas Viceroy, the most exemplary hotel in Abu Dhabi, whose unbelievable architecture straddles the F1 racetrack. It was clear from my trip that Abu Dhabi was not only a beautiful island but a thriving city constantly evolving, with a vision for the future brimming with advancement and transformation. Sardinia. The True Heart of the Mediterranean.
I
leapt with excitement when my Motherin-law said that she wanted to travel to Sardinia. I had the perfect holiday in mind that Ann would love; Northern Sardinia, the Gallura region - popular among the rich and famous - renowned for its beautiful landscape, secluded beaches and bays with sandy bottoms and brilliantly-coloured, crystal-clear waters simply paradise at every turn.
The popular hotel chain, Delphina, practically own this affluent area with eight four or five star properties nestled along the Gallura coastline each offering a range of facilities to suit differing budgets and interests and all maintaining an exceptional service ethos. I stayed at the Resort Valle dell’Erica in 2013 and knew even then I would return with my family. The resort is composed of two distinct five star hotels, Hotel Erica and Hotel La Licciola. We chose the newer edition, Hotel La Licciola, as on my last trip I fell in love with its stunning architecture. The hotel is built in a unique setting nestled into a hill within the natural Sardinian landscape, with breathtaking views across the Mediterranean sea to the mountain backdrop of Corsica. Our accommodation: Two Senior Family Suites with Sea View. (interconnected, ideal for large families like ours) Each suite sleeps up to six people, is extremely spacious with contemporary modern design and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Most evenings we would enjoy sitting on the veranda mesmerised by the stunning sunsets and the enchanting views across the ocean. Location and Facilities: The Resort is set in twenty-eight hectares of private parkland rich in 66 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk
plants and natural wildlife with the occasional wild hog roaming around. This lush landscape is surrounded by 1,400 metres of coastline made up of secluded little bays with beaches of fine white sand. (you’ll soon realise why this resort is considered to have the best beachfront hotels in Sardinia) The Resort, which boasts impressive seawater swimming pools, seven fine dining restaurants, Le Thermae Thalasso Centre and Spa, a Golf course and school and superb kids’ facilities, is ideal for adults looking for peace and relaxation but also fantastic for families and thrill seekers. Cuisine; The seven different restaurants - set amongst dreamy seafront terraces - all serve firstclass cuisine from award-winning chefs whose passions exceed expectation. They select typical Sardinian produce with the freshest ingredients to create exciting and tasty menus. Escaping from the children, (Gran babysitting) we treated ourselves to some much deserved adult time and booked a table at Li Zini Beachfront Restaurant. Sat at tables adjacent to breaking waves, you are barefoot on the sand eating fresh seafood specialities. This is a must which oozes romance in a location to die for. Le Thermae Thalasso Centre and Spa: A true oasis of peace and relaxation with stunning gardens and sea views, surrounded by granite rocks and four seawater swimming pools heated to different temperatures for Thalasso circuits. From an extensive list of treatments, such as I would expect from a five-star spa, I chose to pamper myself with a relaxing back massage, followed by an afternoon alone enjoying the amenities on hand to de-stress the mind, body and soul. Kids’ and Baby Clubs: The resort caters exceptionally well for its younger guests so I knew that all three of our children (aged one, eight and

When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music. And what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth.
” W
- Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet ithout question you will fall in love with the enigmatic, electric whirlwind that is Marrakech. So many places make up the city, it is difficult to know where to start so I will begin with our journey. After a quick flight to some much needed sun, we touched down early evening in the city and our first destination was the Hôtel Les Jardins De La Koutoubia, in the heart of the old town surrounded by the Medina walls. The heat, the smells and the bustle were everpresent as we stepped out of the taxi and onto a makeshift red carpet, which took us into the peace and tranquillity of the hotel. Beautiful flower displays and incredible scents greeted us as we walked towards reception. The hotel is a perfect mix of old and new and gives a true reflection of the real Marrakech. Once the 68 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk
site of the thirteenth Century Riad Ouarzazi, the hotel stays true to local history with its Moroccan architecture. For a moment by night making our way through the corridors, I feared that the hotel wasn’t five star as it claimed but that thought quickly passed when we stepped into the room and I realised that the old worldliness of the hotel added to the magic. The room was perfect, scattered flowers, views of the pool and the sun as it rose in the morning. It truly was the kind of room that dreams are made of. As the sun climbed in the morning, it blazed through the sliding windows as we lay in bed. There was simply no reason to move from our slice of heaven. However the sites and smells of Marrakech implored us to experience them, so we dragged ourselves from
the perfection that was our room to the intense heat and magic of the Medina. Beaware you can lose yourself for hours, days, and weeks in the Medina of mystery. People say many things about the safety of the Medina and you need to be just as alert as you would be in any other city but you are perfectly safe to wander around freely. For the ultimate Medina experience we headed to ‘Le Salam’ a restaurant out of time with a colonial style which gave the impression of being transported into a scene from the movie “Casablanca.” The décor was full of exquisite Moroccan art of living. Dish after dish of Moroccan cuisine was brought to our table and, to top off the perfect night, a dramatic display of belly dancers filled the restaurant. If you are looking for traditional but good quality food with a great atmosphere, make sure you book a dinner date at Le Salam. >

Buggy Desert
Hotel Les Jardins De La Koutoubia
After falling asleep with full bellies, we dedicated the next day to exploring the hotel. Much to my surprise, there was a second pool on the rooftop, with spectacular views of the Koutoubia Mosque. The perfect way to let the day fade away. Lunch was spent in the sun dining in Les Jardins de Bala which served Indian and Asian specialities. As with every journey it was of course time to move again, I had heard very little about the ‘Les Deux Tours’ but after a fifteen minute taxi we were whisked away from the hustle and bustle of the Medina and it felt like we had travelled to a different country although we were only a matter of minutes away. One dirt track followed another and we were finally there. Two enormous gates loomed over us as we got out of the car and, walking through a small door, we were inside. Almost like another world the instant serenity took our breath away, full of greenery and peace this truly was a perfect heaven. Given the key to our room we expected the usual. Instead the key opened a small gate to a private pool set in a walled garden, complete with an enormous bedroom, lounge and office. We had our own villa. A private palace to properly relax. Words cannot truly describe the perfection which took our breath away. A four-poster wooden bed with purple curtains draped across and petals spread from one side to the other. The bathroom was something out of a movie set. The idyllic setting made me question why you would ever want to leave. Sunbathing for two and a private small yet perfectly formed pool. There was still yet more, a pool for all guests surrounded by the idyllic greenery of the grounds of Les Deux Tours. This is the perfect hotel for honeymooners or holiday-makers looking for something that feels like home but with perfection as its twist. You are relatively isolated and have to be prepared to relax, you can take taxis and bus transfers into the Medina but there was no real reason to. A phone call came at six o’clock on our first night in our room - which I should mention had very good internet - to ask if we were dining. Of course we were. We drank and ate the night away under dim lights, to the sound of live Moroccan music.
It would have been very easy to slip into a relaxed state and unwind but our trip had always had a different plan for us. As the sun rose we donned our desert attire, ready to take on the wilderness with a little help from “off road buggies.” Picked up by a charming man named Christophe, we drove an hour into the desert. The time flew by as his knowledge of the area and facts about Morocco were fascinating. Greeted again with traditional Moroccan tea and a little explanation as to what to expect, the adventure began. A must-do experience and one not to forget, we travelled through the empty desert at high speeds, surrounded by amazing views for around three hours. So much fun was had by all. The perfect thing about the buggy experience is that we were back by just after one o’clock, sat around the pool, absorbing the rays. “Les Deux Tours” also does yoga retreats, which seems just perfect for the setting and something I would love to experience at a different time. The journey never quite complete, we were off again. The only mistake we made was taking a taxi that the hotel had booked which seemed vastly more expensive than your average cab. Our journey was almost over but there was another slice of paradise to experience before it was time to end our journey. We drover further away from the city towards the stunning Atlas Mountains and the “Tigmiza”which is nestled in a verdant forest of palm trees. The hotel felt different. It was a combination
of rural and secluded but with a taste of luxury and mainstream. Friendly staff greeted us and showed us the gym, the restaurant, the pools, the cinema, the English bar and finally our room. We had been so lucky on this journey, every destination was nothing short of perfect and the “Tigmiza” did not falter. The hotel had the spiritual bliss of isolation but the feel of luxury, leaving you knowing that you had all you needed. Our room was enormous, a bathroom fit for a Queen, a sofa area to relax and a small window balcony to watch the stars shining in the night sky. The hotel felt almost empty, although we were not the only guests. The vast space gave a very personal and private feeling. We dined, relaxed, went to the gym and finished off our travels in perfect bliss. The staff were truly wonderful and when I decided I was hungry very late at night, they made me a dish to feast on. This is a hotel to switch off, relax and forget your worries. You could lose yourself for weeks. Time certainly stands still in the calm. Again, if you want a slice of the city, transfers to and from are laid on every night, the option to experience all was certainly there. It was always the small things that made the stay easy, even the taxi to the airport was added to your bill so you that you could pay by card for it rather than worrying about the last of your cash supplies. “Not all those who wander are lost.” We found our way to the airport having experienced, the best Marrakesh had to offer.

rban Cookhouse is turning up the heat with the launch of its ‘Summer Camp’ and is promising sizzling secret club nights as well as hot new food and drinks, offering something for everyone, including city centre canines! We love the New York inspired independent bar and restaurant in Princess Street in the heart of Manchester, which has revamped the 4,500 sq ft converted shipping warehouse to offer a chilled summer vibe. And there’s good news for the city’s dogs as they are welcoming all manner of pugs and muts -but the catch is they must be no bigger than the ‘doggy doorman’. “We have many customers who both live and work in the city, a lot of whom have pet dogs, so we are allowing urban pooches in! They must be well-behaved and we are being sizest about it as we won’t let any puppies in that are bigger than our ‘doggy doorman’ height bar!” 28-yearold entrepreneur and owner of Urban Cookhouse, Tim Coulston told Viva. New features include private booths that can now be hired, new pool and foosball tables and a photo-booth for indoor fun, while its ‘sundowners’ terrace is great for outdoor play and cocktails. The food offer has also been given a hot summer make-over with customers able to tuck in anywhere in the bar/restaurant with the chance to ‘build their burger or dog’ starting from just £8 for a beef, chicken or vegetarian spicy bean patty or hotdog, that diners can add a fantastic range of cheese, meats, veggies, pickles and sauces, to create the perfect burger for them. What’s more there’s 50% off food throughout June so Mancunians can tuck into the new dishes as well as Urban 70 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk
Cookhouse’s famous ‘Urban Legend’ burgers and other classic NYC delicacies, including its hallmark Freddy’s ribs, wings, dogs and disco fries. Also newly launched is a £5 lunch deal that runs weekdays from noon until 3pm throughout summer and Urban Cookhouse own unique take on ‘afternoon tea’ with its ‘New York Afternoon Tea Party’ that includes mini burgers, wraps, nachos, New York cheesecake, chocolate browines and a choice of beers or Prosecco for just £15! “Our food has got to be some of the best authentic NYC for the best price in Manchester so we’ve tweaked our menu with new additions such as the ‘build a burger or dog’ and our ‘New York Tea Party’ and are giving customers 50% off in June so they can see what we’re all about,” said Tim. The cocktail menu has been given a Summer make-over starting from just £3.50, with a happy hour every day from 5pm until 8pm, with offers including two beers or two glasses of prosecco for £5 (bottles £15) and bottles of wine or two cocktails for £10. With a late license (it is open until midnight weekdays and 2am Thursday through to Saturday), a trademark loft lounge and bar and extensive cocktail list, it’s a favourite destination for Manchester’s party-people including nearby offices, students and the city’s Gay Village and will be launching ‘pool parties’ and club nights this later this month with our very own VIVAEms taking to the decks. magine indulging in an authentic, New York style pizza and washing it down with a Beverly Hills Iced Tea. When you are fully refreshed, picture yourself retreating to a game of American Pool followed by playing on retro arcades. Doesn’t this sound like a dream? Dogs n Dough and 17 Below are the hidden gems in Manchester when it comes to all things American. Since opening its doors in 2013, Dogs n Dough has become renowned for its truly authentic, American eating and drinking experience. Dogs n Dough was the originator of Manchester’s gourmet hot dog and New York style pizza scene. Where else could you go for that authentic American food? Each of their signature hundred-percent beef frankfurters are deliciously served in freshly-baked brioche buns. Fancy some toppings to go with that? These can be adorned with toppings ranging from the typical fried onion to peanut butter and strawberry jam or fried chicken and coleslaw! You can have anything your taste buds desire - there are no judgements! As for the pizzas, they are made to order using fresh dough and their secret pizza sauce. Obviously you can play it safe with your classic pizzas such as Margherita or Pepperoni but you can be adventurous and try something different. Pizzas topped with bacon, cheeseburger and fries (The Triple Threat) or chicken tikka, chilli spiced onion and mini poppadoms (The Passage To India). There’s something for everyone. If you have any dietary requirements, let the staff know and they will do their best to accommodate you! Dogs n Dough’s cult following is, of course, down to their amazing food but, with one of the creators having played a part in the fame of Socio Rehab and Corridor, it goes without saying, the cocktails are amazing. The American bar is home to a whole host of premium spirits, imported American sodas - including Dr Pepper Cherry - and craft beers. To book, visit dogsndough.com Follow on Twitter @dogsndough

ith access only available through a small door in Dogs n Dough and hidden sixty feet below street level, 17 Below opened earlier this year with the sole purpose of being a ‘playground for adults.’
However, there’s no slide or swing set in this bar, instead it’s full of professional-grade American pool tables and custom-built eighties arcade machines. Just what every adult wants. Their eighties design doesn’t end there. The walls are filled with retro gaming posters and vibrant neon and technicolour tiling. An adult playground just wouldn’t be complete without a bar and 17 Below has perfected this element. Although it’s small, it’s impeccably formed cocktail list is accompanied by plenty of craft beers, wines and spirits. What more can you possibly ask for? An underground playground filled with those eighties machines to remind you of your childhood - where you would beg for money to go to the arcades with your friends - mixed with perfectly crafted cocktails or craft beers. Artisan’s Spring Menu Launch
A
rtisan, which first opened its doors in the summer of 2013, offers a rustic menu at a modest price. Located in a huge open expanse filled with impressive artworks that are, for the most part, available to buy and are regularly changed. The beauty of Artisan is its diversity. It is a meeting place, a kitchen, a lounge and bar as well as a place to enjoy good food and drink while listening to music in a cool space. We’re grateful to the mastermind behind such an ambience, Tim Bacon, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Recently, Artisan has undergone a spring clean, bringing a refreshed menu and room offering, what is essentially, a lively, open-plan, urban loft in the heart of Manchester. The new interiors are all about high contrast and juxtaposition. Black and white with splashes of bright colours, textures and tones, an eclectic mix of lighting with disarranged herb planters dotted about the place. It’s not just the interior aesthetics that have changed. Artisan have refurbished their menu. It now features fresh colourful dishes with a marketplace feel. With a lot of greens, fresh produce, herbs and nourishing meals, the globalinspired dishes encompass a wide range from light salads, flatbreads, seafood to comforting, wholesome mains. Artisan isn’t just a casual eatery, it is an inexpensive, lively hang-out for groups of friends and families alike. Catering for all people, the beautiful, private dining-rooms and bar are perfect for small events - such as corporate functions and personal celebrations. artisan.uk.com

What a fool believes - The Doobie Brothers I’m not sure if this track was in “Boogie Nights” maybe I imagined that but this song makes me sing every single time! it’s got such a good feeling to it!
Dancing In The Dark - Bruce This is a great americana eighties classic! I didn’t get into Bruce until I was about twenty-five but now I’m a big fan.. Who can forget the video where Courtney Cox gets picked from the crowd to dance on stage with Bruce?
Smalltown Boy - Bronski Recently sampled by Brandon Flowers, this track is another eighties massive hit. I love the early use of synth and programmed beats, especially the snare in this. It has such a haunting feeling but still makes you want to dance around!
Get Over Here - Rasmus Fabber (Axwell Remix) I heard this track a few years ago on radio 1. I used to be heavy into my house music and this one is a gem. The way it keeps building and building up to the chorus and then explodes.. It makes me smile every single time!

I love old school hiphop and this is such a fun track to listen to and really encompasses summer for me. If you love good beats check this group out, they are amazing!
Bad - Michael Jackson I couldn’t do this list and not put on Mr Jackson. I feel like the collaboration between Michael and Quincy Jones is one of the greatest in modern history. Two people in the right place, at the right time. This track sums up that statement.
Blue Suede Shoes Buddy Holly To me, this is the best version of this song, the band is so tight it’s unbelieveble. I’m sure it constantly speeds up as well! It’s only one minute fifty seconds long, but that wants to make me listen to it even more! I’ve realised I love the eighties today. ha ha..
The Power Of Love - Huey Lewis & The News This is my ringtone and i get major love for it ha ha. This track couldn’t be any more eighties, could it? The movie “Back To The Future” was a big part of my childhood and I think this song was a big reason why. I’m sure I could lip sync to this very well!

e’s known as one of the trio that is Fun Lovin Criminals, TRM “The Rhythm Man” and Uncle Frank. Drummer, Frank Benbini, never ceases to amaze us with his passion for music, rhythm and of course his love for Prince! The established singer, music producer, songwriter and director shows no end to his talent, having just finished touring with reggae band UB40, under the Radio Riddler label and also creating legendary after-parties from shows at such places as Manchester’s Walrus and Hula. Following which the King of Rhythm shows no signs of stopping.
Riddler is a unique remixing of artists in a Reggae/Dub style and their debut album ‘Purple Reggae’ is a cover of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ soundtrack in its entirety. This being something that has gone down as extremely memorable in Frank’s career, with Prince being an artist he holds close to his heart. (he even has a tattoo of Prince on his arm)

Howard Marks VIVA AND The Madchester Music Scene Pay Tribute To The Legend And Nicest Man In The Room...
Painting by: Tony Husband
I
n April we heard the devastating news that Howard Marks had died aged seventy, after his battle with cancer. Described by the press as ‘the most sophisticated and charming drugs baron of all time’ and ‘a true modern-day folk hero,’ they also said, ‘He sounds like Richard Burton and looks like a Rolling Stone.’ Howard spent his last years as a successful author, raconteur and stand-up performer telling his life’s tales of smuggling drugs and seeking to legalise cannabis. His bestselling autobiography, Mr Nice, was published in 1996 and he followed it last year with Mr Smiley My Last Pill And Testament in which you can read about his extraordinary, exciting, fully-packed life or you could watch the film, Mr Nice, starring Rhys Ifans as Howard. The VIVA girls first met Howard in Leeds six years ago at his bar, Azucar. After a very entertaining interview, we stayed in contact with the loveable Mr Nice who became a big supporter of VIVA Magazine – attending our events and writing a few articles for us. One fond memory was an event we hosted for Howard in the Light Boutique Hotel’s fifteenth storey penthouse one sunny yet rainy evening in the summer of 2013 featuring the Fun Lovin Criminals. Howard Marks Talks 15 Storeys High Above Manchester, you can see the video footage of this evening at www. youtube.com/vivamagazines. Before Howard got seriously ill, he was in the process of putting together a feature for
VIVA about his experiences and love for the cross again, ships in the night.” Madchester music scene. IMAGES FROM HOWARD’S OLD-SKOOL PICTURE ALBUMS: Howard on stage with P.A.I.N. | outside his garage | doing a bit of gardening | Howard addressed the Annual Dinner of the Linen Guild completely stark naked.
He loved hanging out in the music scene, bands loved to collaborate with the Welsh man by either featuring his spoken words on their tracks or his face on their album covers or cameo parts in their music video’s. One such well know album cover was the Fuzzy Logic album by The Super Furry Animals. Howard was also in a band called P.A.I.N and explained to VIVA that one of his favourite gigs in Manchester was playing at the Twisted Wheel Club back in the seventies. His last music collaboration was with Dylan Thomas and record label Ogenesis where Howard read a Dylan Thomas poem set to music. The record is called ‘Do Not Go Gentle’ and was out exclusively on green vinyl for ‘Record Store Day’ back in April. Talking of Record Store Day, Howard mentioned DJ Greg Wilson’s ‘Super Weird Substance Presents. A Vinyl Happening For Record Store Day’ event that he attended at Dry Bar in Manchester back in 2014. The day consisted of live DJ sets from EVM128, Walter Ego, Derek Kaye, Organic Gav and GW alongside vocal jams from Katherine and Carmel Reynolds and performances from Howard and Kermit. Greg Wilson said, “When I picked up Howard from Piccadilly station to take him to our Record Store Day Happening at Dry Bar, he casually mentioned that Dry was where he held his first book presentation for ‘Mr Nice’ in 1996 – the serendipity of the connection really setting things off on the right foot. It was a joy to have him with us, just his being there made the room that much brighter. He was so gracious throughout that day, happily chatting to people and having his picture taken with so many – the charm of the man was overwhelming.” The last time Howard set foot in Manchester was for Peter Hook & The Light gig at Christ Church in Macclesfield. They were performing the complete works of Joy Division, celebrating the life of Ian Curtis. As the editor of VIVA I also attended the gig that night. Personally, I didn’t know much about Joy Division (Sorry Hooky, ha ha) so I cheekily asked Howard to do the review of the evening for VIVA instead of me.
Howard said, “I had the privilege, not only of Hooky’s warm friendship but also of his unshakeable professional commitment to deliver. Several people had warned me of how difficult he was to work with when we were about to tour together. I found him the easiest person conceivable. He should have been a dope smuggler. Whatever he says he will do, he will, particularly when there’s an audience, to whom he feels an unstoppable sense of duty to satisfy.” You can read Howard’s full review of that evening at www.vivamanchester.co.uk “Howard was like the father you never had. He was encouraging, generous, supportive, protective and loving. The last time I saw him was in Macclesfield in last May and it was lovely to see him. He was great company and he’s one of those people that as soon as you were with him, it felt like he’d never been away. I will miss him greatly.” Peter Hook. There has been a lot of love on social media for this famous and loveable drug smuggler from friends and fans paying their respects with these same descriptions continuously popping up: genius, legend, charming and simply a down-to-earth guy. VIVAEms said, “I will always be grateful to Howard who saw potential talent in me and took me under his wing by becoming my DJ mentor. He enabled and inspired me with my DJing career which has got me to where I am today. We DJ’d together at festivals and he let me raid his coveted and vast music collection. One of the last records Howard shared with me, which he absolutely loved and I had never heard before, was this beautiful song from 1971 ‘Love The One You’re With’ by The Isley Brothers. RIP Howard Marks, hope the grass is just as green for you on the other side!”

Gentlemen and Dating Tips
As it’s the Queen’s ninetieth birthday this year, we are going to give you some tips on how to treat your Queen and put a big smile on your lover’s face. “Being a gentleman never goes out of style.” Take every opportunity possible to show your Queen how much you love her, there is no such thing as being too romantic. Passion is everything, understand her mind and how she thinks and love her truly. Make an effort and treat her like the Queen she is. Make plans for romantic dates and surprise her and, if you do as we say, it won’t be long before she wants to see your crown jewels. “A gentleman knows when to call her sexy and when to let her know she’s beautiful.”
Men’s Fashion
Every day is a fashion show and the world is your runway. SS16 is upon us and it’s now time to switch things up, show off and be you. This is the season to wear colours and stand out. You can really show off your individual style by wearing bright, bold colours this SS16. The colours green, beige and shades of grey are going to be in this season. We always mix and match our styles with colours and this season is no different. Dress to impress this Summer. Imagine you’re meeting the Queen, this is how you should always dress. Take pride in what you wear and wear it with confidence. You can never be too well-dressed, you never know who you are going to meet. When you look good, you feel good. Always remember to accessorise with pocket squares, ties, belts and sunglasses. Remember, it’s not about brand, it’s about style so always go with what suits you. Style is very personal, it has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is subjective and ever-changing, style is forever. Create your own style. Let it be unique and go with colours that match your skin tone and bring out the best in you. Look for different textures in fabric this Summer.

Ten mancs KERMIT LEVERIDGE by Karin Albinsson
Photo and words by Karin Albinsson In the mid-nineties I toured with Black Grape. Twenty years later, I’m back photographing the band and I’m catching up with PAUL LEVERIDGE, better known as Kermit. A true Mancunian who grew up in the heart of Manchester, in Moss Side. Paul’s parents are from Jamaica. They both came over in their youth, met in England, got married and had four children, three daughters and their son Paul. Kermit has fond memories from a childhood full of love; where music and entertainment was part of daily life. The family would listen to music played on the radio at home. The children would perform for their parents and young Paul would tell his Mum that one day he would make a Gold Record and give it to her! At Princess Road Primary School, Paul enjoyed the music lessons and he learned to play the violin. At his secondary School in Cheetham Hill he learned to play more instruments and got into reggae, soul and punk. At the age of fourteen his music teacher invited him to play drums for his band at Band On The Wall! On the same day that Paul moved to the Crescent in Hulme, he heard someone playing a turntable below his flat. It was Anderson, a young man with the same musical taste and they quickly formed a band, The Ruthless Rap Assassins! Clubs and drugs were a part of that life. One day, Paul’s mate Bez asked if he would like to go to Hacienda to check out the band he was in - it was here Paul was introduced to the Happy Mondays and Shaun Ryder. After Happy Mondays had split Paul joined Shaun in Black Grape. For me, this is a time when I got to photograph the band on stage, back stage and on the tour bus, taking photos that never made it beyond my neg file - for obvious reasons! For Paul his fondest memory is of him and Shaun in the the studio making music in the vocal room. The lyrics came flying out as in a rap! When Paul is not working he enjoys spending time away from the limelight with his partner Amanda and their two-year-old daughter Xian. After years of taking drugs and feeling lost, he now feel grounded and happy. So what about his plans for the future? “Ha ha, the devil laughs when you make plans! I will carry on doing what I’m doing, creating music and poetry. I’m also writing my own comic that will be published, as well as starting to write a novel.” I ask Paul which Mancunian he finds the most interesting. “Stella Grundy, a great lyricist. Her album The Rise and Fall of a Northern Star is brilliant! How do you define a Manc? They are straight. If you are shit they tell you! And his biggest achievement in life? “It was a proud moment when I fulfilled my childhood promise to my Mum and presented her with the Black Grape Gold Record, It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah.” 92 | VIVA | w w w. v i va m a n chester.c o.uk
“
Mooresy: The Fighter’s Fighter”, will be released on July 1st. For the first time, the thirty-seven year old champion tells his story of how a masked hit-man left him for dead.
The former middleweight champion packed a punch in the ring but was no match for a nine millimetre gun. Jamie said, “Any thoughts I had of making a comeback disappeared in a few seconds.” In a nearfatal case of mistaken identity, Moore was on the footpath leading to the Spanish villa where he was staying. “I saw somebody out of the corner of my eye. Then he came full into view. He was wearing a mask and pointing a gun straight at me. He fired the first shot which hit my hip and I was down.” Jamie heard more shots being fired and knew he had been hit again. Before slipping into unconsciousness, he managed to call an ambulance. Begging the call handler to trace his whereabouts using the GPRS signal on his phone. The bullet, which hit his hip, missed a main artery by less than a centimetre, and is still in his body even now. At twenty, Jamie made the life-changing decision to turn professional, the strict discipline and intense training turned his life around for the better. He joined Oliver’s boxing gym in Salford, going on to become British, Irish, Commonwealth and European light middleweight champion and was ranked an impressive number two in the world. His southpaw-style won critical praise from boxing fans and respected sports writers. He is one of Britain’s most loved boxers. His career was ended earlier than expected, on expert medical advice. Any temptation to get back to the ring disappeared after he was shot. “I was always tempted to have just one more fight,” he said, “That night in Marbella ended any thoughts of that.” He’s surprised doctors and physiotherapists with his recovery. Despite still having a bullet lodged in his hip, extensive nerve

and muscle damage to his leg, he recently completed the Great Manchester Run in an impressive fifty-two minutes. Jamie remains in the public gaze as a Sky TV boxing pundit, and enjoys sharpening the skills of professional boxers as they prepare for title fights. He is in hot demand as a fitness trainer, with an impressive celebrity client base including: Catherine Tyldesley, Jamie Lomas and Will Mellor, whom he trains at his gym in Astley.

MAGNIFICENT MAJESTY THE MONARCHY IN FILM.... Colin Firth: The King’s Speech
I
n the year of the Queen’s ninetieth birthday, our editor has asked me to come up with some words about representation of the monarchy in film. Having thought long and hard about this, I decided to look at examples not just of Queen Elizabeth II but also the portrayal of a few of British Kings and Queens of the past. The King’s Speech Colin Firth’s performance as King George VI won him an Oscar. The touching drama, directed by Tom Hooper, gave us an insight into how a crippling stutter was overcome with the guidance of an unorthodox speech tutor who helped ‘Bertie’ realise what he was truly capable of. This film focusses on a fascinating period in the history of the British monarchy, after the abdication of King George’s brother – King Edward VIII - who fell in love with an American commoner. Elizabeth - Elizabeth: The Golden Age Cate Blanchett’s ‘Virgin Queen’ performances were powerful ones, showing how Elizabeth’s vulnerability was turned into strength and she evolved to become the forceful leader that her father craved but in the form of a Queen,
rather than the male heir he yearned for. Blanchett captured the transition of Elizabeth I, from a young girl out of her depth and seduced by the lure of the opposite sex, to a dominant and uncompromising Queen, who drove forward a policy of colonisation and exploration of the then unknown world. Born in Australia, a nation that has wrestled with its relationship with the British monarchy, Blanchett was nominated for best actress awards for both of these films.

The Madness of King George Nigel Hawthorne played King George III in Alan Bennett’s stage production, winning an Olivier award and the play later became a film. The film is full of many wild and joyful moments that are charming and fun but the backdrop is the tale of George’s loss of sanity and an insight into the misguided medical practises of the time. It also shows how the courtiers that surrounded him manipulated the situation to maintain the sanctity of the crown. Helen Mirren played Queen Charlotte in this 1994 production affording me an easy segue into... Helen Mirren: The Queen

The Queen In 1997 Princess Di died in a road collision. This film dramatizes subsequent events and looks at how the Queen handled the media and public reaction to Diana’s death. The stance that the royal family took was questioned and condemned in many quarters and Mirren’s subtle and honest work gave the Queen a touching human quality that offered a rare insight into the pressure of her position and the weight of the crown. Key to Mirren’s characterisation was the commitment to the sovereignty, family and the principles that she felt were key to being British. The film also showed how challenging it must be to cope with the ever-changing expectations

and demands of the media and society and the importance of being seen to be doing the right thing. There was a fascinating relationship between the Prime Minister of the time (Tony Blair depicted by Michael Sheen) and the Queen, setting the imagination ablaze with what tone of conversation actually takes place between such important heads of state. Ultimately, this representation of the Queen showed traits that are clear for anyone to see, her pride, sense of duty and personal strength. Whether a royalist or otherwise, it is clear that the Queen has been an inspiration to many people and, at the age of ninety, continues to show a tremendous commitment to her role.

Independence Day: Resurgence - 23rd June 2016
T
wenty years on from the original film, the world once again finds itself under the threat of an Alien invasion. Writer director Roland Emmerich returns to his franchise but this time Will Smith is replaced by Liam Hemsworth. Emmerich is a German Director whose cv includes The Patriot, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla (1998) and, recently announced, a probable follow-up to this film so expect a cliff-hanger ending. If you haven’t seen the 1996 original, expect an epic film featuring destruction on a massive scale and, for the umpteenth time this year, watch out for the Tower of London getting destroyed. The fight is led by a small but resilient collective who rely on the sharp insights of David Levison (Jeff Goldblum) to help to try and overcome this extraterrestrial onslaught as he did last time. Independence Day precipitated a return to longer-length films after a period where features had got to under ninety minutes in some instances and part two, at two hours thirty minutes, is only three minutes shorter than its predecessor.

T
he third in this excellent reboot series sees Captain Kirk lead the crew of the Enterprise to parts of space where ‘no one has gone before,’ only to discover that not everyone is willing to welcome them with open arms. Directed by Justin Lin, (Fast and Furious) the usual cast is joined by Idris Elba as the main villain. We can look forward to a tense confrontation between Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Krall. (Elba) Simon Pegg (Scotty) has also taken on writing responsibilities on this project so we can look forward to some clever comedy as well as the ferocious sci-fi action we are used to.

I
t is impossible to be interested in mainstream cinema and not be aware that this film is coming out. The ‘battle’ for supremacy between DC and Marvel has gathered a new pace and we are being treated to approximately twenty-six ‘universe’ movies this calendar year. Suicide Squad is about a collective of convicts that are enlisted by a government agency to complete elite operations in return for their freedom. This rag-tag band have an array of unique skills and this film is being sold as DC’s answer to Deadpool.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie - 1st July 2016
B
ritish TV series Absolutely Fabulous ran between 1992 and 2012, focusing on the outrageous antics of two boozy companions, Edina, played by Jennifer Saunders and Patsy, played by the timeless Joanna Lumley. The two ran a fashion business but the show really centred on their cruelly witty bullying of Edina’s sensible daughter, Saffron. (Julia Sawalha) The show was a huge success and developed a cult following. ‘Ab Fab’ has now been made into a movie and many of the familiar faces return including June Whitfield, Jane Horrocks and Kathy Burke. Add some very familiar British faces from fashion and film – Kate Moss and Joan Collins for example – and you have a recipe for some good comedy for most of the family to enjoy. The party-obsessed pair find themselves at the centre of a media frenzy and seek solace on the ultra rich French Riviera where they evolve a typically hair-brained plan to enable them to see out their days there, free from the glare of an accusing media eye and, of course, at someone else’s expense.

Jason Bourne - 29th July 2016
M
att Damon returns to the role that catapulted him to ‘A-list’ stardom and reunites with the gifted British screen director, Paul Greengrass. After the last episode of this series of films failed fundamentally to live up to the ‘Bourne’ standards, this promises to be a return to form and authenticity. Damon plays the title character, a former ‘asset’ trained to the highest level and extremely dangerous. Bourne is seeking the final pieces of the jigsaw that make up his forgotten past. www.vivamanchester.co.u k | VIVA | 95
