Widening horizons
Dear teacher, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 4th edition of the Bilingual Campus, organized by Cardenal Cisneros University and Edelvives Publishing. Over the last four years your enthusiasm, your active participation and positive feedback in the previous editions have made us realize the uniqueness of this training and the special meaning it has for all those of you who participated in it. We are proud to organize the Campus for small groups of CLIL teachers to whom we guarantee the highest quality training. We truly believe in the importance of friendly, cooperative settings where teachers and trainers work hand in hand and where we can promote a natural exchange of innovative CLIL solutions. This year we have designed a two-day intensive programme with excellent workshops and social activities dealing with the CLIL approach. We invite you to participate and share ideas with your colleagues, learn more and widen your horizons as a CLIL professional. Remember the meaning of a TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More. We are looking forward to seeing you in Alcalá in July! Sincerely yours, Bilingual Campus Coordinators Josué Llull Peñalba

ABOUT THE TRAINERS Ana Halbach > is a lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages at the Universidad de Alcalå. She is currently involved in various research projects in the area of bilingual education, focussing especially on the development of literacies in bilingual programs, and the role of both the foreign language and the mother tongue in this kind of learning contexts. She leads the Master in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and is involved in various teacher training projects in collaboration with other institutions. When she is not reading, discussing or thinking about education, Ana enjoys sharing her time with her family and friends, walking in the mountains, playing board games (which her children are starting to call boring games), gardening‌
Matthew Johnson > has worked as an EFL teacher and trainer in the UK, Colombia and Spain. Now he teaches at the Cardenal Cisneros University College and the British Council. He specializes in bilingual education, learner training and developing speaking skills. Matthew loves camping in Europe and sleeps better in a tent than in his own bed at home. He’s also an avid reader, an American TV series addict and a bedroom guitarist.
Will Varney > is an experienced EFL teacher at all levels, from infants to adults. He has worked in both the state and private sectors and has also been an examiner, materials writer and ELT consultant. Will holds a postgraduate diploma in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. He is currently based in Galicia, from where he works as a teacher trainer for Macmillan ELT. QUALITY CLIL TRAINING
Raquel Fernández > works as a University Lecturer at Centro Universitario Cardenal Cisneros. She has been the coordinator of the Bilingual Project since 2009, and also the co-director of the Expert in CLIL online postgraduate course. Since she started to be involved in CLIL in 2004, she believes this is a way to improve education and provide students’ professional and personal development. A good teacher never stops learning, and that’s what I try to do each and every day!
Richard Bradley > is a consultant for the Trinity College London Iberia team. Since 2004 he has been involved in the implementation of plurilingualism in the Spanish education system. He has recently worked on CLIL projects with the regional governments of Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia. His areas of interest include literacy, music and drama. He strongly believes that purposeful creativity should be in the core of the curriculum. Richard is still striving to become a virtuoso clarinet and saxophone player. Much more practice needed.
Edward Marks > is an English teacher who uses art, music, theatre and storytelling as his launch pad for language acquisition. He believes that motivation, curiosity and self-esteem are the foundations for effective language learning and these form the basis of all his teaching. Eward is a founding director of the Building English Language School, collaborator with the Departmento de la didáctica de la expresión plástica of the Complutense University, writer of children’s stories and composer of songs for young learners. When Edward finds a free moment you can find him baking bread with his kids or running in the mountains!
James Crichlow > currently works as a language assistant at Cardenal Cisneros University College. He is also studying a Master’s Degree in Intercultural Communication, Public Service Interpreting and Translation at the Universidad of Alcalá. He graduated in 2012 from University College London where he read Spanish literature. James is fascinated by language, especially translation and interpreting. He organises an English pub quiz to encourage Spaniards to practice their English every Thursday in Whelans Irish pub in Alcalá.

Plenary Session
Ana Halbach > Universidad Alacalá de Henares
«What happens to language teaching in a bilingual program?» Teaching in a bilingual school is all about changing the language of instruction, and consequently changing the teaching methodology in the content subjects. But what happens to language teaching in this kind of programs? Are there any methodological changes in the teaching of languages too? Should there be? These and other questions will be answered in this talk providing lots of practical examples and getting participants to develop their understanding of the role of the language teacher in bilingual programs.

Matthew Johnson > Centro Universitario Cardenal Cisneros
«Best Friends - CLIL and ICT» If we really want to make the most of new technologies, we have to go beyond using a digital tool merely to substitute the old way of doing a task and move towards redesigning tasks or even creating new ones. This session looks at ways in which we can use technology to promote communication, collaboration, creativity and higher order thinking skills in order not only to enhance, but transform our students’ learning.

«Oh, Romeo, Romeo! Using Drama in content CLIL lessons» In this workshop, we will discover how drama techniques can (and should) be a relevant tool in CLIL classrooms. They are not only valid to boost students’ motivation but also a fantastic way to scaffold students’ learning, among other interesting benefits I’ll be discussing in the presentation. In this session, participants will be involved in the use of a number of highly effective techniques they can later keep and easily adapt to any teaching context.

Workshop General CLIL Physical Education
Richard Bradley > Trinity College London
«Let’s Get Physical!» Much recent research strongly suggests that there is a strong positive correlation between physical fitness and academic performance. Moreover, moving while learning seems to aid the ‘logging in’ of the new information. In this active, practical workshop we will explore how increased physical activity can be successfully integrated in the primary school classroom, referring particularly to the challenges of the CLIL context.
12:00
Brunch and Publisher’s Exhibition (Courtesy of ByME) ByME is a project created by Macmillan and Edelvives in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning in bilingual schools in Spain. We invite you to discover ByME news, receive special publisher’s gifts and participate in a prize draw.

How can we get students to use English with each other in the Art class? The busy teacher needs every possible tool available when trying to achieve the delicate balance of successful CLIL teaching. From ‘Monopoly’ to ‘Top Trumps’ and ‘Snakes and Ladders’, in this workshop we will look at the world of board games and card games, how they can easily be designed and created in the classroom, then used as a very effective tool for student led English use.
