Konturen werden weich, so samtig wie der feine Sand, der noch warm von der Tageshitze die Menschen zum Verweilen einlädt. «Mega!», sagt Eliane Müller, «so ein Sonnenuntergang hat schon immer etwas Magisches.» Die Sängerin aus dem luzernischen Hochdorf, die vor zwei Jahren die Castingshow «Die grössten Schweizer Talente» gewann, lässt sich von der einzigartigen Stimmung an der Westküste von Florida bezaubern und lässt den Blick zum Horizont wandern, wo eine Gruppe von Pelikanen ein Luftballet von Tauchflügen in die Brandung der See vorführt. Er will der Schweizerin die faszinierende Natur rund um die Südspitze der Halbinsel zeigen: ein dichter tropischer Dschungel, an dessen Küste sich die schönsten Strände der USA – manche meinen sogar der Welt – erstrecken. «Gut, dass du ein anständiges Auto dabeihast», sagt er zur jungen Abenteurerin. «Die Reise wird holprig.» Verwinkelte Wege führen durch das Dickicht, in denen das Regenwasser vom Vorabend teilweise noch knietief steht. Kein Problem für den Subaru Forester XT: Eliane pflügt mit dem Allradstar spielend durch den Schlamm: «Was für ein Spass!». Der 40-jährige Zürcher betreut die Abteilung Maintenance, die für den Unterhalt der acht Edelweiss-Flugzeuge zuständig ist, als technischer Supervisor. Ritzmann überprüft, ob seine ehemaligen Kollegen von SR Technics alles richtig kontrollieren. Sobald einer der Edelweiss-Flieger in den Heimatflughafen Zürich zurückkehrt, bedeutet dies für Maintenance und Putzmannschaft Hochbetrieb. Denn zwischen der Landung in Zürich und bevor die neuen Fluggäste das Flugzeug betreten, bleibt wenig Zeit. Im Durchschnitt circa eineinhalb Stunden. 90 Minuten,

Beat ensures that his former colleagues from SR Technics have checked everything properly. Once an Edelweiss aircraft returns home to the airport at Zurich, it’s all systems go for the maintenance and cleaning teams. There’s very little time to complete everything between landing in Zurich and welcoming the next set of passengers on board. They usually only have around one and a half hours. 90

um kleine Mängel zu beheben und gründlich zu reinigen. Sind die Reifen in Ordnung? Gibt es leichte Mängel an der Flugzeugstruktur? Für die technische Wartung kommen die Flugzeuge von Edelweiss alle sechs Wochen für einen sogenannten A-Check in den Hangar der SR Technics. Im Innern des Flugzeugs beseitigt die Reinigungs-Equipe mit eingeübten Handbewegungen die Spuren der vorangegangenen Passagiere. Fein säuberlich werden der Gang gesaugt und die Kopfstützen der Sitze neu bezogen. Beat Ritzmann kontrolliert die Arbeit der Reinigungsfirma genauestens. Mit der Taschenlampe leuchtet er die Zwischenräume der Sitzreihen aus. Hat das Team der Reinigung eine Ritze vergessen zu saugen? «In der Regel arbeiten meine Kollegen sehr gründlich. In der Eile kann aber mal etwas vergessen gehen», sagt Ritzmann. In ruhigem, freundschaftlichem Ton gibt der Supervisor knappe Anweisungen. Der Eindruck entsteht: Diesen Mann bringt so schnell nichts aus der Ruhe. Die Kollegen scheinen sein kritisches Auge weniger zu fürchten als vielmehr zu schätzen. 270 Kilometer mit einem Gleitschirmflug Aufgewachsen ist Beat Ritzmann als jüngster von drei Söhnen auf einem Bauernbetrieb in Flaach im Zürcher Weinland. Die Eltern seiner Frau betreiben im gleichen Dorf einen landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb für Ackerbau und Munimast. Wenn sein Schwiegervater in die Ferien fliegt, vertritt ihn Beat Ritzmann im Betrieb. «Dann heisst es um fünf Uhr aufstehen und zwei Stunden in den Stall, um sieben Uhr zur Arbeit und nach Feierabend nochmals zwei Stunden in den Stall. Every six weeks, Edelweiss aircraft return for technical maintenance and undergo an “A check-up” in the SR Technics hangar. Inside the aeroplane, the members of the cleaning team work skilfully and tirelessly to remove any sign of there having been a previous group of passengers on the plane. The aisle is vacuumed until it is spick and span and the covers on the headrests are replaced. Beat Ritzmann carefully inspects the cleaning company’s work. Using a torch, he illuminates the spaces in between the rows of seats. Has the team forgotten to vacuum a gap? “My colleagues usually clean very thoroughly. But sometimes things can be forgotten in the rush”, comments Beat. The supervisor gives concise instructions in a calm and friendly manner. You seem to obtain the impression that nothing can get this chap worked up at all. His colleagues appear to appreciate his critical eye more than they fear it. 270 kilometre paraglider flight Beat Ritzmann grew up as the youngest of three sons on a farm in Flaach in the Zurich wine region. His wife’s parents run a farming and bull breeding business in the same village. When his father-inlaw flies away on holiday, Beat Ritzmann takes over the business for him. “That means getting up at five o’clock and spending two hours in the stable, going to work at seven o’clock and then spending another two hours in the stable after finishing work. It just depends!” The farmer’s son has been interested in aviation since childhood. Noch bevor ich zur Arbeit nach Kloten fahre, springe ich manchmal auf dem Hof meiner Schwiegereltern ein. Scouting expedition in the Black Forest I scout out the the fresh air and beautiful green landscapes of the area around the Black Forest on foot for take-off sites for my second passion. I am an avid long-distance paraglider.

Als Aktuar und Kassier des Delta- und Gleitschirmclubs Schaffhausen ist sein Stammgebiet der süddeutsche Raum um den Schwarzwald. Er gehört zu einer Gruppe von Gleitschirmfliegern, deren Ziel es ist, möglichst weite Strecken zurückzulegen. «Mein persönlicher Rekord ist ein Flug über 270 Kilometer ohne Zwischenlandung», erklärt Ritzmann. Dafür nutzt er Thermik – Aufwind, der durch Sonneinstrahlung entsteht – um sich immer wieder in die Höhe zu schrauben. Für einen Flug dieser Länge verbringt man einen ganzen Tag in der Luft. Ritzmann: «Es spielt eigentlich keine Rolle, ob ich zwei oder neun Stunden unterwegs bin. Beim Streckenfliegen bin ich hundertprozentig auf die Suche nach Aufwind fokussiert. Ich beobachte Wolkenbilder, halte Ausschau nach kreisenden Vögeln und versuche eine möglichst gute Linie zu finden.» Tandem-Flüge mit dem Paraglider Seit er vor 18 Jahren mit dem Gleitschirmfliegen begann, legte er in rund 2 500 Flugstunden mehr als 14 000 dokumentierte Kilometer in der Luft zurück. Vor drei Jahren absolvierte er die aufwän-

He is the actuary and treasurer of the Schaffhausen Delta and Paragliding Club, he usually flies over southern Germany in the area around the Black Forest, taking advantage of the magnificent scenery. He is a member of a group of paragliders whose aim is to cover the longest distances poss ible. “My personal record is a 270-kilometre flight without making any landings”, Beat explains. He uses the thermals – updraughts created by the sunlight – to circle higher and higher like the birds he shares the air with. He needs a whole day in the air for a flight that long. “It doesn’t really matter whether I’m in the air for two or nine hours. When I’m flying long distances, I’m one hundred per cent focused on looking for updraughts. I observe the clouds, keep a look-out for circling birds and try to find the best line possible.” Tandem paragliding Since he first began paragliding 18 years ago, he has clocked up more than 14,000 documented kilometres in the air and around 2,500 flying hours. Three years ago, he passed the difficult exam required to permit him to paraglide in tandem. He

Gelernter Maschinenmechaniker Zum Schluss seines Kontrollgangs inspiziert Beat Ritzmann, ob jeder Sitz mit einer Schwimmweste und einer Karte mit den Anweisungen für einen Notfall ausgestattet ist. Der Supervisor: «Fehlt auch nur eine, darf das Flugzeug nicht starten.» Ritzmann ist gelernter Maschinenmechaniker. Seine Mechaniker-Kollegen schätzen, dass er auch bei technischen Fragen genau weiss, wovon die Rede ist. Für seine Aufgabe bringt ihm das Unternehmen viel Vertrauen entgegen. Dieses hat sich der Zürcher gründlich erarbeitet. Bevor er vor zwei Jahren bei Edelweiss als technischer Supervisor begann, arbeitete er 14 Jahre lang für SR Technics. Den Wechsel bereute er nie: «Bei Edelweiss sind der Umgang miteinander und die Atmosphäre familiärer». Noch ausgeglichener als bei der Arbeit sieht man Beat Ritzmann manchmal auf der Rückfahrt vom Gleitschirmfliegen. «Das Glücksgefühl nach einem erfolgreichen Streckenflug ist unbeschreiblich. Ich ertappe mich manchmal selbst dabei, dass ich mit einem breiten Grinsen im Zug nach Hause sitze.»

A machine mechanic by trade To end his inspection, Beat Ritzmann checks that each seat has a life jacket and a card displaying the emergency instructions. The supervisor comments: “If just one thing is missing, the aeroplane is not allowed to start its engines.” Beat is a machine mechanic by trade. His mechanic colleagues appreciate that he understands what he’s doing on technical issues. Because of the nature of his work, the company places great trust in him, something which the Zurich native has worked hard for. Before he started with Edelweiss as a technical supervisor two years ago, he worked for SR Technics for 14 years. He doesn’t regret moving. “The way people treat one another and the atmosphere at Edelweiss remind me much more of a family.” You can sometimes see Beat Ritzmann on his way back from a paragliding session in a more relaxed mood than at work. “The feeling of happiness I get after a great long-distance flight is just indescribable. Gölä, Sie haben mit den legendären Bellamy Brothers auf deren Ranch in Florida Ihr neues Album «Mermaid Cowgirl» aufgenommen. Wie kam es zu dieser Zusammenarbeit? Gölä: Ich empfinde es als eine grosse Ehre, dass ich Gast bei den Bellamy Brothers sein und mit ihnen so eng zusammenleben und zusammen arbeiten durfte. Schon nach unserem ersten ge meinsamen Projekt, wo wir unsere grössten Hits gemeinsam auf Platte veröffentlichten, träumte ich davon, mit ihnen einmal gemeinsam Songs zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Das ist nun in Erfül lung gegangen und macht mich sehr happy. Sie befinden sich in einem Airstream Wohn wagen auf einer Ranch in Florida. Haben Sie hier ein anderes Gefühl fürs Komponieren als im Berner Oberland? Gölä: Nicht wirklich. Ich bin ja auch ein völliger Hillbilly. Was anders ist: Ich bin in Amerika und werde auch vom Alltag hier inspiriert. Wenn ich die Texte höre, die die Bellamys über das Leben hier geschrieben haben, denke ich manchmal: Shit, vielleicht sollte ich noch besser werden, mich auch von diesem Lifestyle hier inspirieren lassen. Die Pioniergeschichte von Amerika und seiner Musik hat mich schon immer fasziniert.

Gölä, you’ve recorded your new album “Mermaid Cowgirl” with the legendary Bellamy Brothers at their ranch in Florida. What inspired this joint effort? Gölä: I consider it a great honour that I was the Bellamy Brothers’ guest and that I was able to live and work so closely with them. After our first joint project, which was to release our greatest hits on CD together, I was already dreaming about writing and recording songs with them someday. That dream has now come true which makes me very happy. You’re currently living in an Airstream trailer on a ranch in Florida. Do you get a different feeling for composition here compared to the Bernese Oberland? Gölä: Not really. I am a complete hillbilly, of course. But what is different is that I’m in America and am inspired by daily life here. When I hear lyrics that the Bellamys have written about their life here, I find myself thinking: shit, maybe I need to get even better and also let myself be inspired by the life style here. The pioneering history of America and its music have always fascinated me. The Bellamy ranch is over 150 years old. Where do you still sense the American pioneering spirit here? Gölä: Every inch of this place is full of memories. You can tell how the houses have grown with the families over generations, how something else has been built here and there. The great thing about the Bellamys is that everything is real. They’re not a show band, just simple farm boys who have grown up with cattle farming. They certainly are real cow boys. Country and honky-tonk is in their blood. What did it look like to work with the Bellamys? Gölä: Honestly, their pace of life was something I really had to get used to. It took ages in the morn ing until the guys got out of bed. But that meant

Jetzt singen Sie auf Englisch. Wie können Sie diese neuen Liedern Ihren alten Fans zugänglich machen? Gölä: Gar nicht. Wenn eine meiner Lieblingsbands, die Eagles, plötzlich ein Album auf Französisch machen würden, würde ich es nicht kaufen. Ich will sie so, wie ich sie kenne, und fertig. Darum will ich meinen Fans die Mundartlieder so gut wie nur möglich geben, weil sie es verdient haben. Denn sie sind es, die mir das Leben als Musiker möglich machen. Warum trotzdem die englischen Lieder? Gölä: Auch wenns sonst niemand interessiert: die mache ich für mich selbst. Ich bin mit Elvis, Rock‘n’Roll und Blues aufgewachsen. Das ist meine Musik. Ich möchte zumindest versuchen, an meine Schwarzen- und Rock‘n’Roll-Götter heran zukommen. Schreiben Sie in Amerika andere Lieder als in der Schweiz? Gölä: Klar. Sie sind inspiriert vom American Way of Life. Wenn ich am Abend in den klaren Sternen himmel schaue, oder wenn am Morgen das Ross auf der Weide wiehert oder die Katzen um den Airstream streichen, um zu schauen, obs was zu fressen gibt, sind das schöne Momente, die mich berühren. Was sonst inspiriert Sie zu Ihrer Musik? Gölä: Das ganze Leben. Menschen, die ich treffe, Geschichten, von denen ich erfahre, Bands und Musiker aus der ganzen Welt, die ich höre. Was aus der Schweiz haben Sie am meisten vermisst, als Sie in den USA waren? Gölä: Meine Familie natürlich! Meine beiden «Meit schini». Ich war froh, als ich wieder nach Hause konnte. Ein fürchterlicher Siech bin ich geworden, verglichen mit früheren Zeiten. Aber im Moment bin ich der glücklichste Mensch auf Erden, wenn ich mit meiner Familie zusammen sein kann. Ihr neues Album «Mermaid Cowgirl» hat es wieder in die Top 10 der Schweizer Charts geschafft. Setzen Sie sich den HitparadenErfolg zum Ziel? Gölä: Die Hitparade lässt sich nicht planen. Wie die funktioniert, ist und bleibt für mich ein Rätsel. Mein höchstes Ziel ist es, Musik zu machen, die mir und meinen Kumpels extrem «einfährt» und sie dann noch so gut zu machen, dass es das anderen auch tut.

that we worked in the studio until late in the even ing – fortunately. You’re known for the songs you sing in your own dialect. Now you are singing in English. How can you make these new songs accessible to your old fans? Gölä: Not at all. If one of my fa vourite bands, the Eagles, sud denly made an album in French then I wouldn’t buy it. I want the band to be the one I know, and that’s that. And that’s why I want to provide fans of my dialect songs with the best I can, because they’ve earned it since they’re the ones who have made it possible for me to be a musician.

Mein höchstes Ziel ist es, Musik zu machen, die mir und meinen Kumpels extrem «einfährt» – und es anderen auch tut. The most important thing for me is to make music that really “taps into” me and my mates, and also does the same for others.

If this is the case, why the English songs? Gölä: Even if nobody is interested in them, I just make them for myself. I grew up with Elvis, rock ‘n’ roll and the blues. That’s my kind of music. I would at least like to try to get closer to my black and rock ‘n’ roll gods.

Are the songs you write in America different to those written in Switzerland? Gölä: Of course. They are inspired by the American way of life. When I look up into the clear, starry night sky, or when the horse is neighing in the field, or the cats are prowling around the Airstream looking for something to snaffle, I feel these are wonderful moments which move me. What else inspires your music? Gölä: The whole of life. People I meet, stories I hear, bands and musicians from around the world who I listen to. What did you miss the most from Switzerland when you were in the USA? Gölä: My family, of course! My two little girls. I was happy when I was able to go back home. I have become a terrible wreck compared with how I used to be. But right now I’m the happiest person on earth when I can be together with my family. Your new album “Mermaid Cowgirl” has once again made it into the top 10 in the Swiss charts. Do you aim to make hits that top the charts? Gölä: You can’t plan to go to the top of the charts. It’s still a great mystery to me how the charts actually work. My main aim is to make music that really taps into me and my mates, and then to make the music so good that it does others good as well.

Geboren wurde Gölä am 7. Juni 1968 in Thun. Er wuchs in Oppligen auf, machte eine Malerlehre. 1998 veröffentlichte er mehr zum Plausch sein erstes Album «Uf u dervo», das mit über 250 000 verkauften Exemplaren und fünffacher Platin-Auszeichnung das bislang erfolgreichste Schweizer Mundartalbum wurde. Gölä was born on 7 June 1968 in Thun. He grew up in Oppligen and did a painting apprenticeship. In 1998, he released his first album “Uf u dervo” just for fun. It sold a phenomenal 250,000 copies, was honoured with five platinum awards, and has become the most successful album to be recorded in the Swiss dialect.

Dabei lassen Sie sich nur durch Ihre Intuition treiben? Gölä: Etwas anderes habe ich ja nicht! Gibt es andere Musiker, mit denen Sie gerne einmal zusammenarbeiten würden? Gölä: Ja, klar. Ein Duett mit Tina Turner wäre so ein grosser Traum. Aber irgendwie ist es mir gar nicht so wichtig, mit anderen zusammenzuarbei ten. Ich glaube, dass jeder Musiker primär in seiner eigenen Welt lebt. Manchmal kreuzen sich die Wege, und dann macht man etwas zusammen, das «fägt». Das ist dann «huere schön». Wird Ihre eigene Welt durch die Musik, die Sie seit vielen Jahren machen, kompletter? Bauen Sie sich damit etwas auf? Gölä: Nein. Ich versuche einfach, das Leben so gut wie möglich auszusaugen. Ich weiss ja nicht, wie viel Zeit ich noch habe. Darum versuche ich, seit ich denken kann, alles in mich aufzunehmen. Man ches davon setzt sich als Text und Musik um. Ich will aber nie nur Musik machen. Bauen tu’ ich fürs Leben gern, mir gefällt das Familienleben. Für all das, was ich erleben will, reicht ein einziges Leben nicht. Darum versuche ich, das Wichtigste rauszu picken und das möglichst gut zu machen.

So you just let your intuition take control? Gölä: I don’t have anything else!

Are there any other musicians who you’d like to work with? Gölä: Yeah, of course. I have always dreamed of singing a duet with Tina Turner, for example. But somehow it’s not really that important to me to work with others. I think every musician mainly lives in their own world. Sometimes our paths cross, and then we make something together that really rocks. That’s just awesome. Has your own world become more complete through the music you’ve been making for many years now? Are you creating something with it? Gölä: No. I just try to use life in the best way poss ible. I obviously don’t know how much time I have left. That’s why, for as long as I can remember, I’ve tried to take hold of everything in me. Some of that is expressed in words and music. But I never just want to make music. I have always enjoyed creating things and I enjoy family life. One lifetime isn’t really enough for all the things I would like to experience. That’s why I try to pick what’s most important and do it as well as I can.

ie Zyprioten sind ein lebendes Paradoxon: Viele der sonnenverwöhnten Inselbewohner trinken täglich Commandaria, den süssen einheimischen Wein und schlemmen Meze, feine Speisen serviert in kleinen Tellern. Trotzdem werden sie seltener krank und sterben später als die meisten Mitteleuropäer. Wissenschaftler gehen davon aus, dass ein Grund dafür das Essen auf der Insel ist: Viel gesundes Olivenöl, saftiges Gemüse und Obst und nahrhafter Halloumikäse. Das tägliche Glas Wein ist ja schon länger als gesundheitsfördernd bekannt. Vielleicht liegt es auch einfach am Wetter. Auf der Insel scheint an 340 Tagen im Jahr die Sonne. Im Meer lässt es sich auch im Herbst und Winter baden. Und selbst in der kalten Jahreszeit sind 20 Grad Aussentemperaturen keine Seltenheit. Das milde Klima der Götterinsel Die Strände der Insel zählen zu den saubersten im ganzen Mittelmeer. Nicht ganz zufällig gilt die Küste Zyperns als Geburtsstätte von Aphrodite, der griechischen Göttin der Schönheit und der Liebe. Das milde Klima macht die Götterinsel zum Garten Eden von Zitrusfrüchten und lässt Gemüse- und Obstarten hervorragend gedeihen. Bei einigen Pflanzen sind sogar zwei Ernten pro Jahr möglich. Zypern ist nach Sizilien und Sardinien die drittgrösste Insel im Mittelmeer und Heimat von rund 800 000 Menschen. Und die haben neben einer hervorragenden körperlichen Konstitution vor allem den Ruf lebensfroh und gastfreundlich zu sein. Den ursprünglichen Charme Zyperns erlebt man am besten während eines Besuchs eines der kleinen Dörfer in den Weinbergen. Auch Kulturund Geschichtsinteressierte kommen voll auf ihre Kosten. he Cypriots are a living paradox. Many of the sun-drenched island’s inhabitants treat themselves to a daily dose of Commandaria, a sweet local wine, and dine on Meze, fine meals served on small plates. And yet they are rarely ill and live longer than most other people in central Europe. Scientists assume that one reason for this is the food found on the island. There is plenty of healthy olive oil, fresh fruit and vegetables and nutritious halloumi cheese. A daily glass of wine has been recognised as a health benefit for some time now. Perhaps it’s also simply down to the weather. The sun shines on the island for 340 days in the year. You can even bathe in the sea during autumn and winter. And it’s fairly common for the outside temperature to be in the twenties even during the cold months of the year. A mild climate on the island of the gods Cyprus’s beaches are considered some of the cleanest in the Mediterranean. It is no coincidence then that the shores of Cyprus are considered to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and love. Its mild climate makes the island of the gods into a garden of Eden for citrus fruits and allows vegetable and fruit varieties to flourish. Two harvests a year are even possible with some plants. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia and is home to around 800,000 people. And besides being in excellent physical condition, the inhabitants have a reputation for being full of joie de vivre and very hospitable. Cyprus’s original charm is best experienced on a visit to one of the small villages located in the vineyards. Culture and history lovers also get their money’s worth here. The whole island is an open-air museum. Ruins from various cultural periods are testimony to the island’s turbulent history. Cyprus was a bone of contention for the Arabs, Crusaders, Genoese and Venetians. Later the island became part of the Ottoman empire and finally came under the rule of the British empire. It was 1960 before Cyprus finally gained independence.

Das TroodosGebirge wie auch die Akamas-Halbinsel im äussersten Westen der Insel beheimaten zudem eine enorm vielfältige Pflanzenwelt und werden von einer riesigen Zahl Vogelarten bevölkert. Im Salzsee bei Larnaca lassen sich im Winter sogar Flamingos beobachten. Die Südwestküste ist zudem der Schauplatz eines ganz besonderen Schauspiels: An verschiedenen Strandabschnitten legen bis zu einem Meter grosse, streng geschützte Wasserschildkröten ihre Eier. At almost 200 metres, the mountains even have snow occasionally between December and March. There is a small ski region and the “Cyprus Ski Federation and Club”. Anyone who wants to can climb into one of the four ski lifts and be enjoying an après-ski drink on the beach just 45 minutes later. Like the Akamas peninsula on the extreme west of the island, the Troodos mountains are home to an enormous variety of plants and are populated by a large number of bird species. On different sections of the beach, strictly protected sea turtles measuring up to one metre long lay their eggs.
