Eine neue Welt tut sich ihm und seinen Passagieren auf. Ein Erlebnis, das zweifellos die Herzen entzückt. Und ist nicht der Kuss ein schönes Sinnbild für das sanfte Aufsetzen eines Flugzeugs in einem fernen Land, wenn es den Boden berührt? Ich freue mich sehr, dass Edelweiss letz ten Monat gleich drei Erst flüge absolvieren konnte: Die Destinationen Havan na, Las Vegas und Edin burgh werden so in unser Flugnetz eingebunden. So einfach dies sich anhö ren mag, so viel Arbeit steckt dahinter: FlugzeugHandlingsprozeduren mussten vereinbart, Checkin und Abfertigungsregeln definiert und Verträge abgeschlossen werden. Das ist nicht immer eine einfache Angelegenheit. Aber erinnern wir uns: Das wars beim ersten Kuss doch auch nicht? Ich wünsche Ihnen einen schönen Flug.

he early romantic German lyricist, Novalis (1772 – 1801), wrote: “At the first kiss, a new world opens up before you; with him, life enters your enraptured heart in a thousand beams.” Perhaps it isn’t quite as euphoric, but it can be a similarly exhilarating experience for a pilot to land at a new destination for the first time. A new world opens up before him and his passen gers. It is an experience that certainly enraptures the hearts of many. And isn’t a kiss a beautiful allegory for when an aeroplane touches softly down, making contact with the ground in a distant land? I am so pleased that Edelweiss was able to complete three maiden flights last month. It means that Havana, Las Vegas and Edinburgh are now part of our network of destinations. As easy as this achievement might sound, there is actually a lot of work behind it. Aeroplane handling procedures have to be agreed upon, check-in and customs regulations defined and contracts concluded. And that’s not always an easy accomplishment. But we remember well that it was just the same with the first kiss. Wishing you all a great flight.

Ribbon cut: first flight to Las Vegas

Am 5. Mai startete das erste Flugzeug der Edelweiss nach Las Vegas. Das wurde am Flughafen Zürich mit viel Glitzer und Glamour gefeiert. Roulettetische lockten zum Glücksspiel, ein herausragender Elvis-Imitator sang die schönsten Hits des Kings und die grosse Torte durfte auch nicht fehlen. Den Ribbon Cut vollzog CEO und Pilot Karl Kistler persönlich. Der Anlass zog rund 300 Gäste an, die sich am reichhaltigen Buffet verköstigen durften. Ab sofort fliegt Edelweiss jeden Montag nach Las Vegas, in der Hochsaison von Juni bis Oktober zusätzlich auch freitags. Edelweiss’ first flight to Las Vegas took off on 5 May. An event celebrated at Zurich airport with plenty of glitz and glamour. Roulette tables beckoned guests to come and try their luck, an outstanding Elvis impersonator sang the best of the King’s hits and let’s not forget the big cake either. CEO and pilot, Karl Listler, cut the ribbon. The occasion attracted around 300 guests who were treated to a lavish buffet. Edelweiss now flies to Las Vegas every Monday, and also Fridays during the peak season between June and October.

ie alte Dame ist in die Jahre gekommen. Etwas gebrechlich wirkt sie auf den ersten Blick. Das immer noch üppig aufgetragene Make-up ist an manchen Stellen etwas verwischt. Und ihr Kleid sitzt nicht mehr ganz so elegant, wie es zu besseren Zeiten der Fall gewesen sein muss. Doch ihre Augen leuchten in der Sonne, und ihr stilles, verschmitztes Lächeln lässt erahnen, dass in ihr noch viele unerzählte Geschichten schlummern, die nur darauf warten, erzählt zu werden – wenn die Dame denn will. Denn sie ist stolz und temperamentvoll. Sie will noch immer erobert werden. Ein kurzer Flirt genügt nicht. Um ihr Herz zu öffnen, braucht es Respekt, Stil und Geduld – und genügend Zeit, um in eine Welt einzutauchen, die Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts stehengeblieben zu sein scheint. Doch wer und wie ist Havanna wirklich? Ist die Altstadt dem Untergang geweiht oder verströmt sie immer noch diesen einmaligen Charme, der ihr den Übernamen Perle der Karibik verlieh? Ist dieses Sammelsurium an baulichen Stilformen mit seiner Architektur aus der Kolonialzeit eher in Restauration oder im Verfall begriffen? Besitzt tatsächlich fast jeder Kubaner einen museumsreifen Cadillac Baujahr 1955, den er mit genialer Tüftelkunst am Leben erhält? Oder leiden die Kubaner tagein, tagaus unter einer tropisch wucherndern Bürokratie, lebt der Geist Che Guevaras noch oder verhindert der greise Revolutionär Fidel widersin-

Her lavishly applied make-up is now somewhat smudged in places and her dress doesn’t sit quite so elegantly on her as it must have done in better times. Yet her eyes brighten in the sun and her calm, mischievous laugh leaves you thinking that she still has plenty of untold stories lying dormant, stories that are just waiting to be told. If the lady chooses to do so that is; she is proud and temperamental. She is still waiting to be conquered. A quick flirt is not enough. You need plenty of time, as well as respect, calm and patience to be able to open her heart. But when you go, make sure you allow yourself the opportunity to really dive into a world that seems to have stayed in the middle of the last century. Back then, the city of Havana was vast and beautiful. It was luxurious, inviting, elegant and sexy. Idolised and coveted, and quite recently fought over and controversial. Cuba’s capital was a nest of scandal with the charm of a pirate bride. Loved by the revolutionaries, and eyed jealously by rich Americans across the water on the other coast who tried in vain to conquer her. Good old Havana is still up to her tricks, playing a mischievous game of cat and mouse with the world’s powers. It’s this elusive quality that has kept her as perpetually young at heart as she is charmingly chaotic. But who is Havana really, and what is she like? Is the old town doomed or is she still radiating this unique charm that lent her the name “Pearl of the Caribbean”? Is this hotchpotch of various structures with architecture from the colonial period in a state of slow restoration or dilapidation? Does almost every Cuban really possess an antique Cadillac from 1955 (or some other cool classic car) that they have had to tinker with to keep it running? Or are Cubans still suffering daily under a tropical and tangled and often times frustrating bureaucracy? Does the spirit of Che Guevara still live or is the old revolutionary Fidel paradoxically preventing any change or advance? Provided that

nigerweise jede Veränderung, jeden Fortschritt? Vorausgesetzt, man kann ein bisschen Spanisch, gibt es keinen schöneren Ort auf der Welt, um all diese Fragen durchzudiskutieren, als in – good old Havanna. Nicht leicht, aber auch nicht schwer Ohne Angst kann man sich in den verwinkelten Seitenstrassen verlaufen, Hauseingänge betreten, in denen alleine schon die Anordnung der Stromkabel ein Kunstwerk ist, dessen Ausdruckskraft jede postmoderne Installation in den Schatten stellt. Schnell ist man in ein Gespräch verwickelt, meistens sollen dem Touristen garantiert echte und in Wirklichkeit garantiert gefälschte Zigarren «direkt aus der Fabrik» angedreht werden. Den Besuch in einem der immer noch existierenden Privatrestaurants, den Paladares, kann man hingegen ohne weiteres einplanen. Das Essen ist meist nicht der Rede wert, die sich dabei ergebenden Gespräche sind unbedingt zu empfehlen. Aber Vorsicht, die Kubaner sind geschickte Menschenkenner und äusserst flexibel in ihren zur Schau getragenen Überzeugungen. Wird der ausländische Besucher als romantischer Postrevolutionär eingeschätzt, gibt es ein Loblied auf die Errungenschaften des Sozialismus. Outet sich der Tourist als Regimekritiker, wird ihm ein vielstrophiger Klagegesang über die Unerträglichkeit des Alltagslebens vorgetragen. Aber immer wieder landet man bei der gleichen abschliessenden Einschätzung der Gesamtlage: «No es fácil, pero tampoco es difícil», es ist nicht leicht, aber auch nicht schwer. Der Wirtschafts-Boykott seitens der USA seit Anfang der 1960er Jahre hat Kubas Entwicklung gelähmt. Zum Leid der Einwohner – aber zur Freude von Nostalgie-Fans, zum Beispiel solcher alter Auto-Karossen. Noch immer fahren die chromglitzernden Chevrolets, Cadillacs und Studebakers durch die Strassen, und die Privatbesitzer bieten ihre Karossen den Touristen an: «Taxi, Taxi, Se-

Not easy, but also not so difficult You can happily get yourself lost in the winding side streets, so picking up a decent map of the city is a good idea. But even if you happen to find yourself stepping into the entrances to homes where the tangle of electric cables alone is a piece of artwork with an expressive quality that eclipses post-modern installations, you could quickly find yourself tangled up in conversation too. When looking for an authentic cigar, buyer beware. Most of the time, tourists are fobbed off with guaranteed, real cigars “direct from the factory” that are actually fake. In contrast, a visit to one of the private restaurants that still exists in Havana, the Paladares, is something you can do without any hassle. The food is generally not something to write home about, but conversation there can certainly be recommended. But be forewarned. The Cubans are adept judges of character and are highly flexible in the convictions they wear for show. If a foreign visitor is reckoned to be a romantic post revolutionary, they’ll get a song full of praise on the achievements of socialism. If a tourist turns out to be a critic of the regime, a lengthy lamentation on the insufferable nature of daily life will follow. Yet you always end up back at the same final conclusion of the overall situation: “No es fácil, pero tampoco es difícil.” It isn’t easy, but it’s also not so difficult. It could be argued that the biggest factor in Cuba’s current situation is the US’s economic boycott since the beginning of the 1960s – it has crippled Cuba’s development. Obviously to the distress of the inhabitants, but also to the joy of nostalgia lovers. Old car bodies are one such example. These shining, chrome Chevrolets, Cadillacs and Studebakers are still driving through the streets, and their owners offer their cars out to tourists by

Denn Kubanern ist der Zutritt zu allen Tourismusanlagen untersagt – ausser, sie sind dort angestellt. In Restaurants dürfen sie nur auf Einladung. Ausserdem: Welcher Kubaner könnte sich schon ein Essen leisten, das ihn zwei Monatsgehälter kosten würde? Das gilt auch für die ehemalige Künstlerbar Bodeguita del Medio, wo früher kubanische Intellektuelle, Maler und Musiker die Welt eckig und wieder rund diskutierten. Obwohl berühmte Touristen-Attraktion: einen Besuch ist sie aber immer noch wert. Die Schwarz-WeissFotos an den Wänden, die vollgekrizelt mit Autogrammen sind, die wuchtige Holztheke und die stabilen Barhocker verströmen immer noch den angenehmen Charme der guten schlechten alten Zeiten. Man kann sich dann getrost auf den Spuren des berühmten Schriftstellers Ernest Hemingway fühlen, denn von dem hängt eingerahmt an der Wand sein Trinker-Bekenntnis, dass er seinen Daiquirí in der Bar Floridita, seinen Mojito aber in der Bodeguita zu sich nehme. «Von Hemingway selbst geschrieben, ich war dabei», sagt der greise Barkeeper stolz. Toll, denkt der Tourist, hier war wirklich Ernest Hemingway. Bis ein Spielverderber die Anekdote zum Besten gibt, dass der Sinnspruch Hemingways im Jahre 1962 von einem betrunkenen Schriftenfälscher auf Bitten des Besitzers des Lokals hergestellt wurde, um das Geschäft anzukurbeln. Was stimmt denn nun? Das ist eben das Schöne an Havanna, man weiss es nie. Zu Fuss ist man in Havanna gut unterwegs Seit die koloniale Altstadt im Jahr 1982 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt wurde, hat man begonnen, den Stadtkern zu renovieren. So konnten Teile der Altstadt vor dem endgültigen Verfall bewahrt werden.   Dabei stösst man immer wieder auf Monumente kubanischen Stolzes wie das Capitolio Nacional: Zwischen 1926 und 1929 als Kopie des US-amerikanischen Kapitols erbaut, diente es ursprünglich als Präsidenten- und Regierungspalast. Da nicht genug Geld da war, um das ganze Gebäude grösser zu bauen als jenes in Washington, erhöhte man einfach die Kuppel um einen Meter. Obwohl Havanna 85 km breit ist, ist das Stadtzentrum erstaunlich gut zu Fuss zu erlaufen. Dabei merkt man: Havanna ist nicht nur alt und wacklig. Das Leben pulsiert in den Adern dieser Stadt in jugendlichem Übermut. Alt und Neu liegen in Havanna so dicht beieinander, wie man es sich kaum vorstellen kann. Und genau das ist es, das den Zauber dieser ehrwürdigen alten Dame

The famous seven kilometre long waterside promenade in Havana is the city’s place to meet. Children and teenagers play in the surf all day long. Couples, street traders, musicians and tourists meet there in the evenings. It might not be the best place to see how the locals live, but it’s a good opportunity to meet the local people since tourist facilities are out of bounds to Cubans, unless they work there. They are only allowed to go to restaurants upon invitation. But what Cuban could afford a meal anyway when it would cost them two months wages? And the same is also true for the former artists’ bar, Bodeguita del Medio, where Cuban intellectuals, painters and musicians used to set the world to rights. Although it is a famous tourist attraction, it is well worth a visit. The black and white photos on the walls, scribbled all over with autographs, the bulky wooden bar and stable bar stools still exude that cosy charm of the “good old days” when times were not so good. Once you are relaxed and start taking in the atmosphere, you can then begin to see and sense traces of the famous writer, Ernest Hemingway, as his drinker’s confession hangs framed on the wall: he took his Daiquiri in the Floridita but his Mojito in the Bodeguita. “That was written by Hemingway himself, I was there”, says the old barkeeper proudly. Great, the tourist thinks. Ernest Hemingway really was here. That is, until a killjoy shares that Hemingway’s epigram was created by a drunken forger in 1962 at the owner’s request that he could boost his business. What is true then? That’s the beautiful thing about Havana. You never know.

Getting around on foot in Havana is easy Since the colonial old town was labelled a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982, renovations have begun on the heart of the city. This means that parts of the old town can finally be protected from utterly deteriorating. As you walk, you keep stumbling across monuments of Cuban pride such as the Capitolio Nacional. Built between 1926 and 1929 as a copy of the US American statehouse, it used to be used as the presidential and government palace. Since there was not enough money to make the building larger than the one in Washington, they simply raised the cupola by a metre. Although Havana is 85 km long, the city centre is surprisingly easy to cross on foot. It’s then that you realise that Havana isn’t simply ageing and ramshackle. Life pulses in the veins of this city in youthful exuberance and pride. It’s almost hard to imagine just how close the old and the new lie alongside one another in Havana. And it is exactly that which gives the venerable grande dame her charm. There is probably no other city on earth that is more contradictory, mysterious, vibrant, jaded, seductive and charming as Havana.

er Flug nach London City war für mich immer das Highlight der Woche», erinnert sich Tom Schneider an seine Zeit als Abteilungsleiter beim Bankhaus Morgan Stanley an der Zürcher Bahnhofstrasse zurück. «Dann sass ich vorne in der Business Class und lehnte mich weit in den Gang, um möglichst viel von dem zu sehen, was vorne im Cockpit abging. Es war noch die Zeit, als die Cockpittüren während des Fluges nicht verschlossen sein mussten.» Irgendwann hat ers dann hinten im Flugzeug nicht mehr ausgehalten und beschlossen, selbst vorne sitzen zu wollen. So gab Tom Schneider seinem Leben eine entscheidende Wende: vom gut be-

In those days, the cockpits didn’t have to be locked during the flight.” At some point, he realised he couldn’t stand being in the back of the plane any more and decided he wanted to sit right at the front. zahlten Zürcher Bahnhofstrasse-Banker zum Swissair-Piloten – und erfüllte sich damit einen Bubentraum. Zumindest dachte er das am Anfang. Denn am Tag, als er nach der Selektion seinen Ausbildungsvertrag unterschreiben wollte, wurde das Ende der Swissair verkündet. «Das war ein Riesenschock», so Tom Schneider. «Trotz Grounding wurde die Swissair Aviation School weitergeführt, und ich konnte meine Ausbildung absolvieren. Allerdings wusste ich, dass ich danach keinen Job haben würde.» Es blieb ihm nichts anderes übrig, als sich auf gut Glück im Ausland zu bewerben – und landete als Privatpilot bei Daimler-Chrysler Aviation in Stuttgart , wo er fortan mit einem Business-Jet Prominenz aus der Formel-1-Szene um die Welt pilotierte. «Mein Traum war es aber, für eine richtige Airline zu fliegen», so Tom. «Darum war ich mehr als glücklich, als ich 2007 als Copilot zu Edelweiss wechseln konnte.» Wenn Tom Schneider erzählt, spürt man die grosse Leidenschaft, die ihn mit dem Fliegen, aber auch mit Edelweiss verbindet. «Die Stimmung an Bord von Edelweiss ist einzigartig», sagt er. «Es sind Menschen, die glücklich sind, weil sie in die Ferien fliegen oder von dort zurückkommen. Das motiviert uns Piloten im Cockpit zusätzlich, ihnen eine Freude zu machen – zum Beispiel, indem wir unseren Fluggästen erklären, welche Ge-

On the day he wanted to sign his training contract after the screening process, the end of Swissair was announced. “It was a massive shock”, says Tom Schneider. “Despite Swissair being grounded, the Swissair Aviation School continued and I was able to complete my training. However, I knew that I wouldn’t have a job afterwards.” He had no option other than to apply for positions across the world, and landed a job as a private pilot for Daimler-Chrysler Aviation in Stuttgart where he then piloted a business jet with VIPs from the Formula 1 scene around the world. “My dream, however, was to fly for a proper airline”, Tom comments. “That was why I was over the moon when I was able to change to being a copilot for Edelweiss in 2007.” When Tom Schneider tells his story, you can sense the great passion that he has for flying but also for Edelweiss. “The atmosphere on board Edelweiss planes is exceptional”, he says. “There are people who are happy because they are flying on holiday or are coming back from holiday. That motivates us as pilots in the cockpit even more to give them an enjoyable time, by explaining to our guests, for example, which regions we are flying over or by trying to make the flight as comfortable as possible. He organises and leads ‘Good Bye Fear of Flying’ for them (www.goodbyeflugangst.ch) where he explains the procedures that are taken during a flight in detail to the participants. It is also where he dismantles their fears and worries together with psychologist, Bettina Schindler, in extensive conversations. “Because I myself am so excited about flying and know how extremely safe this way of travelling is, therefore I would like to make it possible for people to be able to really enjoy a flight.” Getting to know new people and starting new projects with them is a recurring theme in Tom Schneider’s life. Previously, in his so-called “wild youth”, he organised techno parties. Now he enjoys helping out as a barkeeper in Wings Lounge at the Limmatquai in Zurich alongside his current job every now and again. He has also been in-

Ein weiteres Projekt von Tom Schneider ist der zwischenzeitlich schweizweit grösste jährliche Airline-Event Nightstop. Dieser bietet Mitarbeitern aller Fluggesellschaften und Flugverwandten Betriebe eine soziale Plattform, um sich an der lockeren Party und ausserhalb vom Arbeitsalltag gegenseitig austauschen zu können. Fragt sich, wo Tom Schneider dann noch Zeit für seine Frau Kathrin findet, mit der er seit vier Jahren verheiratet ist. «Wir ergänzen uns perfekt», so der Edelweiss-Captain. «Kathrin arbeitet als Maître de Cabine bei der Swiss. Darum sind wir auf der ganzen Welt zu Hause. Meistens gelingt es uns, unsere Einsatzpläne aufeinander abzustimmen. Dann gönnen wir uns ein paar Tage Erholung an einer fernen Destination. Wir führen eine Liste mit Orten der Welt, die wir zusammen gesehen haben wollen. Bis jetzt war Bora-Bora das Highlight.»

Here, employees from different airlines and companies affiliated with airlines meet at the Runway 34 restaurant at Zurich airport for a relaxed party and so are able to form new friendships and exchange ideas. With a seemingly jam-packed schedule, it all leaves one begging the question as to when Tom Schneider finds time for his wife, Kathrin, to whom he has been married for four years. “We complement each other perfectly”, says the Edelweiss captain. “Kathrin works as a flight attendant at Swiss. It means that we’re at home wherever we are in the world. Sometimes, we’re even able to organise our schedules to fit each others’ and then we enjoy a few days rest together at some distant destination. We have been compiling a list of the places in the world that we would like to see together. Up to now, the island of Bora Bora has definitely been our highlight.”

über. Genauso spannend wie das Ambiente ist auch die Geschichte der Lodges. In den späten 1920er Jahren – in Südafrika boomte das Gold fieber – machten sich die beiden amerikanischen Börsenmakler Guy Aubrey Chalkley und Paul Davis auf in Afrikas Süden, um am Kap eine Bro kerfirma zu eröffnen. Mit grossem Erfolg: Ihr Un ternehmen wurde später von Merrill Lynch auf gekauft. Neben dem Geldgeschäft hatten die beiden Freun de noch eine weitere Passion: das Jagen. Auf ihren langen Streifzügen durch Afrikas Steppen und Wälder stolperten sie über Kingstown, diesen wunderbaren Landfleck am Rande des KrügerNationalparks. Sie waren so begeistert von diesem irdischen Paradies, dass sie beschlossen, es zu kaufen und darauf eine Familien-Lodge zu bauen. Die Faszination für die unberührte Natur und ihre Tierwelt wuchs so sehr, dass seither kein Schuss mehr auf ein Tier abgegeben wurde. Stattdessen baute die Familie das 4000 Hektaren grosse An wesen aus, errichtete weitere Lodges und starte te ein sanftes Touristengeschäft. Über Generatio nen wurde die Passion und die Verantwortung um die Sorge für dieses authentische Stück Afrika weitergegeben. The architecture of the lodges and their interiors move seamlessly from simple country elegance into a tastefully sophisticated touch of romantic adventure. And the lodges’ history is just as exciting as the ambience they exude. In the late 1920s during the later part of the South African gold rush, two American stockbrokers, Guy Au brey Chalkley and Paul Davis, set out for the south of Africa to open a broker firm on the Cape. And with real success: their company was later bought out by Merrill Lynch. Besides trading in gold, the two friends had an other passion: hunting. During their long forays through Africa’s steppes and forests, the two stumbled upon Kingstown. This wonderful spot sits right along the edge of the Kruger Park. They were so inspired by this earthly paradise that they decided to buy the land and build a family lodge on it. Their fascination with the unspoilt nature in the area and the numerous types of wildlife grew. It became so great that they soon gave up hunting and ever since then the animals on the reserve have been safe from hunters’ bullets. Instead, the family developed the 4000-hectare estate, con structed other lodges and began a comfortable tourist business. Over the generations, they have passed on their passion and responsibility to care for this remarkably pure area of Africa. The Sabie river flooded the paradise ripping away many lodges that had been built close to the riverbank and de stroying a large part of the family’s proud history. Yet brothers Nicholas and Robert More, now the fourth generation to own Kingstown, began re construction in 2004 and gave the place a new name to commemorate the start of a new begin ning: Lion Sands Game Reserve. David und Howard, Sie sind grosse CountryStars, leben aber seit Generationen in Florida. Ist Florida ursprünglich ein Cowboy-Land? David Bellamy: Auf dieser Ranch hier in Darby ist unsere Familie seit 1870 zu Hause. Unser Ur-Urgrossvater stammte aus South Carolina und wurde im amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg verletzt. Nachdem er in Kriegsgefangenschaft geraten war, gelang es ihm zu fliehen. Er heiratete und zog mit seiner Frau mit dem Planwagen hierhin. Florida war damals noch nicht so schön. Es bestand vor allem aus Sümpfen mit Alligatoren. Darum war es für die Pioniere sehr viel Arbeit, ein Stück Land wie dieses zu bewirtschaften. Sie sind hier auf der Ranch aufgewachsen. Eine schöne Kindheit? Howard Bellamy: Oh ja, sehr! Aber es gab immer viel zu tun. Mein Vater hatte Zuchtrinder, und da mussten wir kräftig mit anpacken. Hecken bauen, Tiere füttern, vieles mehr. Floridas Natur war damals noch viel wilder. Es war mehrheitlich ein Urwald, der wimmelte von Klapperschlangen und Alligatoren. Wir mussten daraus Weideland für unsere Rinder machen.

Welche Rolle spielte der Tourismus in Ihrer Jugendzeit in Florida? Howard: Die Ostküste war nach dem Bau der Eisenbahnstrecke durch Henry M. Flagler touristisch gut erschlossen. Unsere Gegend um Tampa jedoch weniger. Das ist erstaunlich, denn Tampa war anfangs eine wichtigere und grössere Metropole als Miami, das früher Fort Dallas hiess. Tampa war eine Schwesterstadt von Havanna, Kuba. Daher liessen sich hier viele Kubaner nieder. Der reiche Unternehmer Henry B. Plant, der die Tampa University gründete, wurde zum stärksten Konkurrenten von Flagler, indem er die Westküste Floridas mit der Eisenbahn und damit auch touristisch erschloss. David: Weil die beiden versuchten, sich gegenseitig zu übertrumpfen, entstanden viele TourismusAttraktionen. Wie zum Beispiel Crystal Springs, wo man mit Glasbodenbooten die Unterwasser-

David and Howard. You are huge country stars but your family has lived in Florida for generations. Is Florida originally cowboy country? David Bellamy: This ranch here in Darby has been our family’s home since 1870. Our great great grandfather originally came from South Carolina and was injured in the American civil war. After he was captured as a prisoner of war he managed to escape. He got married and moved here with his wife using a horse-drawn caravan. Back then, Florida wasn’t a very nice place. It was pretty much covered in swamps and alligators. That was why it was a lot of work for pioneers to cultivate a piece of land like this. You grew up here on the ranch. Was it a good childhood? Howard Bellamy: Oh yes, definitely! But there was always lots to do. My father bred cattle and so we had to muck in a lot. Building hedgerows, feeding the animals and lots besides. Florida’s nature was a lot wilder back then. It was more like a jungle teeming with rattlesnakes and alligators and we had to make pasture land for our cattle out of that. What kind of role did tourism play in Florida during your teenage years? Howard: The East Coast was well connected for tourists after the railway line was built by Henry M. Flagler. But Tampa, however, was less well connected. It was quite incredible because initially Tampa was a more important, bigger metropolis than Miami which used to be called Fort Dallas. Tampa was a sister city of Havana, Cuba. That was why so many Cubans settled here. The rich businessman, Henry B. Plant, who founded the Tampa University, became Flagler’s strongest competitor when he connected the West Coast of Florida with railway lines and so also opened it up to tourism. David: It meant that lots of tourist attractions were developed as both of them tried to outdo each

Hat der Tourismus Ihre Karriere beeinflusst? David: Ich denke schon. Denn während des College verbrachten wir viel Zeit an den Stränden und spielten dort in den Clubs. Howard und ich hatten sogar ein Appartement in Clearwater Beach. Howard: Das war für unsere College-Karriere weniger förderlich als für unsere Musikkarriere. Wurde in Ihrer Familie viel musiziert? David: Ja. Unser Vater spielte zusammen mit zwei Brüdern aus Tschechien Honky Tonk, und sonntags sangen wir in der Kirche immer Gospelsongs. So sind wir musikalisch aufgewachsen. Howard: Musik und Singen gehörte für uns einfach zum Leben. Wir dachten, alle würden dies so tun. Ich erinnere mich auch an die Lieder der Landarbeiter aus Jamaika, die kamen, um uns bei der Orangenernte zu helfen. Wundervoll! Florida als Land der Rancher. Haben Menschen, die aus Europa nach Florida kommen, ein falsches Bild von diesem Bundesstaat? Howard: Oh ja, und sie sind nicht die einzigen. Auch viele Amerikaner wissen nicht, dass Florida eine alte und reiche Ranch-Tradition hat. Sogar die grösste Ranch Amerikas, die Deseret Ranch, befindet sich in Florida. Als Bellamy Brothers sind Sie im Show- und Musikbusiness weltberühmt geworden. Hier auf der Ranch umgibt Sie Viehzucht und Natur. Wie passt das zusammen? David: Ich glaube, dass unsere grosse Neugier, immer wieder neue Abenteuer zu erleben, uns in beiden Bereichen viel weitergeholfen hat. Die Jugend auf dieser Ranch zu verbringen, war sehr spannend. Es war immer etwas los. Genau so ist es im Showbiz: Wir sind neugierig, immer wieder an neuen Orten und mit neuen Musikern zu spielen – wie jetzt mit Gölä aus der Schweiz. Wie hat euer Erfolg im Showbusiness das Leben auf der Farm beeinflusst? Howard: Es wurde alles viel einfacher! Wir können Leute bezahlen, die für uns die schwere Arbeit machen. Wir nennen uns jetzt darum «Gentlemen Ranchers». Trotzdem: Die Verantwortung für die Ranch tragen Sie. Ist das keine grosse Belastung? Howard: Es ist immer noch viel Arbeit. Darum sind wir froh, dass wir unser Studio hier auf der Ranch haben. So können wir schnell vom Stall ans Mischpult wechseln. Während der Zeit, als wir mit Gölä

other, such as Crystal Springs, for example, where you can observe the underwater world through boats with glass floors, or the mermaid underwater ballet, “Weeki Wachee”, that we also visited as children from time to time. But that was an exception as we didn‘t have a lot of money. Did tourism influence your careers? David: I think so, because during college we spent a lot of time on the beaches and played in the clubs. Howard and I even had an apartment at Clearwater Beach. Howard: That wasn’t as beneficial for our college career as it was for our music career. Was there a lot of music in your family? David: Yes. Our father played honkytonk with two brothers from the Czech Republic and on Sundays we always used to sing gospel songs at church. So we grew up with music around us. Howard: Music and singing was just a part of life for us. We thought that everyone was the same. I remember the songs from Jamaican land labourers who came to help us with the orange harvest. They were wonderful!

Florida is a state for ranchers. Do people who visit Florida from Europe have a wrong idea of what the state is like? Howard: Oh yeah, and they are not the only ones. Lots of Americans don’t even know that Florida has an old and rich tradition of ranches. Even the largest range in America, the Deseret Ranch, is located in Florida. You have become famous around the world in show business as the Bellamy Brothers. But here at the ranch you’re surrounded by livestock. How does that all fit together? David: I think that it’s our great deal of curiosity in wanting to experience new adventures that has helped us in both of these areas. It was exciting to spend our youth here on the ranch. There was always something going on. And it’s just the same in showbiz. We’re curious, always wanting to play at new locations and with new musicians. We’re now together with Gölä from Switzerland. How did your success in show business affect life on the farm? Howard: Everything became a lot easier! We can pay people to do the hard work for us. That’s why we now call ourselves “gentlemen ranchers”. Nevertheless, you still bear the responsibility for the ranch. Is that a heavy burden?

Howard (geboren 1946) und David (geboren 1950) Bellamy wuchsen auf der elterlichen Ranch in Darby, Florida, auf. Howard: It’s always a lot of work. And that’s why we’re happy that we have our studio here at the ranch. It means that we can switch from the stall to the mixing desk pretty quickly. When we were working with Gölä on his new album, we were also weaning the calves. But we had to stop, because the calves were making too much noise when they were being separated from their mothers. David: Luckily, we have a very well-oiled team that helps us out on the ranch as well as with our music. It would be impossible to do all of this without these people. How can a tourist get to know this other side of Florida away from the beaches and Disneyland? Howard: In Odessa next to Tampa or in Okeechobee on the East Coast, there are companies that offer ranch tours. They will teach you everything you need to know about the real Florida. David: It’s also really exciting to set off in search of the Seminole, the natives of Florida. Their “chief”, James Billie, is a good acquaintance of ours. They used to live in the swamps like the Everglades and it’s a fantastic experience to explore these on a motor boat accompanied by a Seminole guide. What’s your insider’s tip to Florida? Howard: You really have to see Florida’s water sources, such as Blue Springs near Orange City with their crystal clear water! David: And for all music fans: Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa is a fantastic concert bar!

Denn die Kroaten nehmen grundsätzlich mal alles gelassen. «Fjaka» heisst dieser Lifestyle, den die Einheimischen gerne mit einem Augenzwinkern wie folgt umschreiben: «Die Inder müssen für diesen Zustand jahrelang meditieren und fasten, uns Kroaten ist er in die Wiege gelegt.» Wer sich auf das damit einhergehende verlangsamte Tempo einlässt und sich entspannt von der schweizerischen Pünktlichkeit verabschiedet, wird sich in Split so richtig erholen und «Fjaka» lieben lernen. Umso schneller, je mehr man unter Einheimischen ist, die meist ziemlich gut Deutsch, Italienisch oder Englisch sprechen. Trotzdem kommt ein gekonnt platziertes «zdravi bili i veseli» äusserst gut an. Es bedeutet so viel wie: «Ihr möget gesund und fröhlich sein.» Dann merken die Kroaten auf Anhieb: «Ah, das ist jemand, der versteht, worum es geht.» – Es geht um den Genuss des Lebens.

Pool-Beachparty mit internationalen Top-DJs Zum zweiten Mal findet in diesem Juli in Split die Mega-EDM-Party «Ultra Europe» statt. Nach dem dreitägigen Festival mit einem Line-up, das sich gewaschen hat – darunter Tiësto, David Guetta und Paul Kalkbrenner – wird auf der Insel Hvar weitergefeiert. Die Pool-Party «Ultra Beach» direkt am Strand mit atemberaubender Sicht aufs Meer ist in Sachen Luxusnachtleben fast nicht zu überbieten. After a three-day festival with an all famous line-up -including Tiesto, David Guetta and Paul Kalkbrenner- the party carries on over on Hvar island. The “Ultra Beach” pool party is celebrated directly on the beach with a breath-taking view of the sea and is hard to beat when it comes to experiencing luxurious night life. The clubs in Split change their names practically every year. The largest clubs are Hemmingway, which has an enormous open air space, and the Vanilla Club. Here you can meet the locals who love to have a good time and party in earnest. They might even dance and sing to Schlager songs. If you want to refresh yourself, you shouldn’t order a “prosek” in the hope of a getting a prosecco. Prosek is actually a kind of port wine. The red wine is often watered down due to the hot temperatures and is then called a “bevanda”. “Pipi” is the best drink for quenching your thirst. It is a kind of Orangina with Pippi Long-

Schnapsgeniessern sei das Zwetschgendestillat Slivovic empfohlen. Dazu passt statt Clubbing der traditionelle und romantische Klapa-Gesang. Klapa ist ein Männerchor, der Volkslieder a-capella vorträgt. Grosse Klapas haben bis zu 30 Mann. Auf den Spuren von Winnetou und den Piraten Tagsüber ist Split Ausgangspunkt für unzählige Kurztrips. Auf dem Seeweg zu den vielen Inseln wie Brač, Hvar oder Vis zum Surfen oder Schnorcheln. Der Küste entlang 25 km östlich von Split befindet sich die ehemalige Piratenstadt Omis, wo im Sommer Seeräuberspiele stattfinden. Etwa gleich weit entfernt Richtung Westen liegt Trogir, dessen Altstadt zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe gehört und wo Winnetou und Old Shatterhand durch die Gassen von «Santa Fe» ritten. Von historischer Bedeutung ist auch die Festung von Klis direkt oberhalb von Split, wo heute folkloristische Darbietungen, Theater und Gala-Dinners stattfinden. Wo die FKK erfunden wurde Menschen baden nackt, seit es Menschen gibt. Aber die Kultur, an bestimmten Stränden ausdrücklich den freien Körper zu zelebrieren, behaupten die Kroaten erfunden zu haben. Entsprechend gibt es etliche FKK-Strände. Das heisst aber nicht, dass «Split» von «splitternackt» kommt. Man sollte sich also genau erkunden, wo diese Orte sind. Und falls es unangenehme Situationen gibt, lässt man sich besser nicht auf Diskussionen ein, was gerade als Gast auch mit Uniformierten nicht ratsam ist. Obwohl die Kroaten ein überdurchschnittlich entspanntes Volk sind, helfen diskret in die Fahrzeugpapiere gelegte Euro-Noten nie weiter. Sich am besten ganz auf die erholsamen Momente einlassen, dann ist alles «nema problema».

But Croatians maintain that they were the ones to invent a culture of specifically celebrating the naked body at certain beaches. There are quite a number of nudist beaches as a result. However, that doesn’t mean that the term “stark naked” was originally invented in Split. Be sure to find out exactly where these places are so as to avoid surprises. But, if any uncomfortable situations do arise, it’s better, as a guest, not to get embroiled in discussions, especially not with someone in uniform. Although the Croatians are generally very relaxed, giving a few Euro notes with your driving licence is not going to get you anywhere. The best thing is to simply enjoy these relaxing moments and let everything turn into “nema problema”.
