Soundscape Station term: Degree Project Spring 2013 critic: Kathryn Dean location: St. Louis, MO Rhino 3d, Vray, AutoCad, Paneling tools, Adobe Suite
St. Louis is known for its live music scene and deep musical roots. Thousands of tickets are sold each week for shows at The Pageant, Peabody Opera House, and Fox Theatre. These formal music venues follow the standard archetype; audience and performer, stage and stands. Soundscape station proposes the idea that the city, the individual, and the performer switch roles throughout the performance. The station uses parabolic curvature to amplify the sounds of the street musician, the principal player. The informal music venue is a space where one can listen to music in combination with the intermittent trains and the sounds of the city itself. Located on Delmar Boulevard, at the site of the original 1920’s Depot, the train station creates an end to the unfinished Delmar Loop.

Escenario del Barrio term: Grad 3 / Fall 2012 critic: Fabian Llonch location: Buenos Aires, Argentina Rhino 3d, Vray, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite
Villa 31 is one of the biggest shantytowns in the city of Buenos Aires with around 30,000 inhabitants. 51 percent of villa 31 is made up of immigrants from neighboring countrys. The villa is a melting pot of different cultures all in one small knot within the city of buenos aires. The villa, located at the heart of Buenos Aires’ economic district, demonstrates the clear seperation between the highest and lowest social classes within the city. Create Amphitheater The new school offers a stage where the varying cultures within villa 31 can come together and express their art, political and social views, and dance.

Manis Cementum term: Grad 2/ Spring 2012 critic: Robert Booth location: Wash U Campus Digi-FAB Studio Rhino 3d, Vray, CNC mill, Lasercutter, Manual Labor
Manis- genus of animals with triangular scales Caementum- rough cut stone Manis Cementum explores the possibilities of concrete materials and post-tensioned, compression arch structures. The goal of the studio was to use digital and analog fabrication techniques to create a self-supported sculptural element. Precedents for the project included medieval chain mail, reptilian scales, and various bone structures. The final form takes on an animalistic shape and is therefore given the scientific classification of Manis Cementum. The word “manis” comes from a genus of animals that are covered with large, triangular scales that overlap each other like tiles on a roof. “Cementum” is a play on the Roman word “caementum,” which means rough cut stone, and in the case of the Manis Cementum, reflects the nature of the materials being used in the project. +15°

Chapel San Martin term: Undergrad D8/ Summer 2009 critic: Alfonso Perez- Mendez location: Guadalajara, Mexico Rhino 3d, Vray, Photoshop
San Martin de las Canas is located in the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is home to approximately 800 inhabitants. This small town was originally a colonial hacienda before the Mexican Revolution. Over time, construction has erased the structure of the hacienda. The formation of the town is now strictly based on the land. The church of San Martin is a porous building. The wood slots allow for light to filter through while the concrete planes block out the sun completely. Throughout the day, lighting conditions within the church change. The calligraphy of the building’s exterior is displayed on the floor of the chapel as the sun continues to change position in the sky.

Urban Organism term: Undergrad D7/ Fall 2010 critic: Bradley Walters location: New York City, New York partner: David To Rhino 3d, Vray, Photoshop
The design of the hotel was inspired from analyzing the city as a living thing. The building represents the city as an organic life form that gradually becomes part of its context through the application of layers. The logic of the building is the inverse of formation of New York. Instead of being constricted to the prescribed orthogonal lines of the city grid, the building begins with an organic shape which is wrapped by structure. The rigidity of the grid is reified in the structure that holds the organic tubes. Like the real grid of New York City the structure is the formal layer in which all things spawn from. It becomes the nerves and veins of the building and exterior skin act like an actual organic skin, porous and dense depending on the programmatic qualities of each space.
