Students Design Council’s
Official Christmas Card
School children were encouraged to get creative and design Hull City Council’s official Christmas e-card this year.
The council invited every school in the city to take part, asking pupils to submit designs on the theme of “Hull at Christmas.” The winning entries in both the primary and secondary categories were chosen to feature on the e-card, which will be sent to employees, partners and stakeholders within the city and beyond.
Council leader Mike Ross had expressed enthusiasm for designs that celebrated how Christmas brought people together “with a Hull twist.” Ross, along with the Council’s chief executive, Matt Jukes, reviewed the submissions and created a shortlist before selecting a winner and runner-up in each category.

Britain’s Most Festive Place Named
Brighton and Hove has been crowned the most festive city in England! A recent study ranked it as the top spot for embracing the holiday spirit while enjoying outdoor adventures. Brighton placed fourth overall in the UK for festive cheer, beating out Nottingham and Manchester to claim the title of England’s most festive destination.
Join Walk for Children this Christmas
Last Christmas, more than 5,000 children reached out to Childline for support during the festive season, highlighting the critical need for mental health services during what can be a difficult time of year. In response, the NSPCC is gearing up for its annual “Walk for Children” fundraising event on December 21.
Taking place on the longest night of the year, the Walk for Children invites people across the UK to walk five kilometers in their local areas to raise vital funds. Registration costs £10, with a suggested minimum sponsorship target of £100 per participant. Whether you join an existing walk or organise your own, it’s a fantastic way to make a difference this holiday season. For more details or to find a walk near you, visit https://www.nspcc.org.uk.

The Festive Big Ask
The Education Executive elves have been hard at work, collecting festive reflections and insights from the school business management community. From the year’s standout moments and wishes for the sector, to cherished holiday traditions and guilty pleasures, their responses are brimming with warmth, wit and a touch of Christmas magic
Mr. S. Quirk, school business manager, Sherwood Primary School
What’s been the highlight of your 2024, personally or professionally?
Passing the Strategic Case Study CIMA exam and completing the qualification after many years of toil and stress and burning the candle at both ends! I felt a huge sense of achievement at getting there. The year has been extremely tough both personally and professionally, but that gave me a huge amount of satisfaction. What positive changes or developments would you love to see in the sector in 2025?
I really think we need a longer budget settlement period to allow more certainty for forecasting and resource planning. Similarly, longer-term pay awards, or at least more timely pay awards. This year for example, support staff did not receive their cost-of-living award until eight months into the year, which is just not acceptable. Less ad-hoc grants to plug gaps for those delayed pay awards would then be needed. Greater capital funding would be good too.
Who deserves a festive shoutout this year, and why are they a star in your eyes? I think the whole SBL community! The job is often misunderstood and underappreciated. With budgets being squeezed and greater demands to do more with less, the pressure we are under is growing, in what is already a stressful role. My wife deserves a shoutout as well – she works in the role too and not only does she manage the challenges of working in a small school and the issues they are going through, but she also has to put up with me, which is no mean feat!
What is your favourite Christmas movie and why?
I love Arthur Christmas, just a bit of heartwarming festive fun that my kids love - it’s nice to get snuggled up and watch as a family.
What’s your festive guilty pleasure?
A huge Baileys whilst putting the tree up!
Kevin Parker, chief finance officer, The Little Way Catholic Educational Trust
What’s been the highlight of your 2024, personally or professionally?
Professionally, I’d say the highlight has been becoming the new CFO of an amazing, forward-thinking trust. A trust that is in its infancy, means I am part of everything that is being set up…. Perfect for a control freak! Personally, I’d say discovering that I can survive five cups of coffee and an Excel spreadsheet before 9 a.m. – a true Christmas miracle. What positive changes or developments would you love to see in the sector in 2025?
I’d love to see more streamlined funding allocations, maybe with less paperwork than Santa’s “Naughty or Nice” list. Plus, I think every school would benefit from a bit more recognition for our school business managers, the unsung elves of the education sector, keeping everything ticking along smoothly behind the scenes!
Alison Coxon, school business manager
What’s been the highlight of your 2024, personally or professionally?
Professionally, I decided to put myself first and fight for recognition after the SLT at my previous school wouldn’t fight or acknowledge how hard I worked and tried to back me into a corner when I asked for a pay rise which I absolutely deserved. I have a new job which I started in September and I’m feeling much more motivated and appreciated within my role. What positive changes or developments would you love to see in the sector in 2025?
There needs to be more recognition of how hard all SBLs work across the country and this needs to be backed up with fair pay for us all. There needs to be some changes to funding for schools to help all SBLs carry out their roles effectively and efficiently. Increases need to be made to AWPU, SEN and there needs to be fully funded support staff pay awards.
I’d like a coffee machine with an endless supply!
Who deserves a festive shoutout this year, and why are they a star in your eyes?
My shared service team, who have been juggling budgets, audits and just about everything else you can imagine with precision and positivity. Without them, I’d likely be as lost as a reindeer without a sleigh. They truly keep the show on the road!
What would you like to find under the Christmas tree this year?
Honestly? A crystal ball that reveals next year’s education funding trends. But if that’s out of stock, a coffee machine with an endless supply would do the trick just fine.
What would you like to find under the Christmas tree this year?
A couple of tickets for me and my hubby for a Caribbean cruise - bliss!!
What is your favourite Christmas movie and why?
The Polar Express, as it’s such a lovely, feel-good movie. Also, The Holiday as it’s such an easy watch with a great cast.
What’s your festive guilty pleasure?
My nanas famous recipe for homemade stuffing, I make it every year.
Which one Christmas decoration sums up your personality?
A bouncing Xmas Tigger from the Disney shop.
Lisa Lancaster, business manager
What’s been the highlight of your 2024, personally or professionally?
Graduating with a master’s degree in education leadership in January. Who deserves a festive shoutout this year, and why are they a star in your eyes?
Our deputy headteacher. We had SENDCO and headteacher both off sick along with several other staff and she just kept it all together.
What is your favourite Christmas movie and why?
Die Hard – Yippie Kay Ay – there are no other words needed!
If you could invite any three people (alive or historical) to your Christmas dinner, who would they be and why?
Prince Philip (humour), Agatha Christie (just love her) and Nelson Mandela (to find out how he managed to be a great leader after such a long time imprisoned)
Which one Christmas decoration sums up your personality?
Christmas Lights – I’m usually twinkly and bright – unless my batteries are run down, or I’ve been unplugged – then I’m just useless!
Christine Hicks, regional trust business manager
What positive changes or developments would you love to see in the sector in 2025?
Recognition for support staff to be fairly paid - support from National Education Support Staff Campaign (sorry not very festive!)
What’s your festive guilty pleasure?
Michael Bublé on repeat once the Christmas tree goes up! If you could invite any three people (alive or historical) to your Christmas dinner, who would they be and why?
My Parents and father-in-law - they have all passed away and whilst they are missed every day, Christmas is a time for bringing families together. My youngest daughter was born after my Mum passed away and my eldest was only 5 months old when she died.
My daughter answered this one on my behalf - she said “a star because you always shine”
What’s one festive tradition you can’t do without?
Family Christmas Day - playing board games after lunch! Which one Christmas decoration sums up your personality?
My daughter answered this one on my behalf - she said “a star because you always shine.”
What’s been the highlight of your 2024, personally or professionally?
Professionally, the work I do with SBLs is the highlight of my day and very much cumulatively the highlight of my year! Seeing SBLs develop, progress and shine is the most rewarding part of my job. Personally, seeing Lewis Hamilton win at Silverstone this year was a big highlight! What would you like to find under the Christmas tree this year?
A F1 paddock pass (obviously!).
What is your favourite Christmas movie and why?
It’s a toss-up between Home Alone and The Holiday but in truth, I love all Christmas movies. What’s your festive guilty pleasure?
Lots of hot chocolates topped with marshmallows and cream. It’s like an addiction. Which one Christmas decoration sums up your personality?
A snow globe! One minute, calm and chilled then going a million miles a minute the next!
TThe SBL’s Twelve Days of Christmas
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…
welve urgent emails, eleven icy footpaths, ten weather warnings, nine missing jackets, eight road closures, seven chilly students, six broken school chairs, five long meetings, four missed calls, three school plays, two missed lunchbreaks and a partridge in a pear tree!
Does this sound familiar? If your daily to-do list looks like this, you might be hoping for a Christmas miracle right about now. But you don’t need magic to transform your twelve days of stress into twelve days of success. All it takes is a few minutes to pause, take a deep breath and give yourself a moment to reset.
You’ve been working hard to make sure these last few weeks are enjoyable for both your staff and students, and you deserve some recognition. Those Christmas lunches everyone is enjoying? That’s thanks to you. The beautiful tree in reception? That has your name written all over it. The big smiles on your students’ faces? You make those happen.
Of course, with only a few weeks left in the term, finding time to unwind might feel impossible right now. That’s why we’ve gathered 12 simple ways to help you and your staff step into Christmas feeling refreshed and less stressed.
12
WALK AND TALK
Nearly a third of people tend to stop or scale back their regular exercise routines during the Christmas season, which can lead to feelings of sluggishness and low mood. To keep energy levels up and spirits high, consider encouraging regular movement with staff “walk and talk” meetings. These casual, on-the-go catchups are a great way to stay connected with colleagues while getting a bit of fresh air and boosting those allimportant endorphins.
11MAKE IT SOCIAL
You know what they saya job shared is a job halved! What might seem like a mammoth task for one can quickly turn into a productive and even fun experience for a small group. Take organising, for example. Sorting through school supplies, decorations, or other end-of-term tasks might feel daunting on your own, but when approached as a group activity, it can become a relaxed and enjoyable way to wrap things up for the year. Better yet, it gives people the chance to claim items they might need or repurpose things that would otherwise go to waste.
DID YOU NOTICE?
We’ve snuck the titles of six beloved Christmas songs into this article. Give yourself a well done if you spotted them!
10
CREATE A COSY BOX
Baby, it’s cold outside, and few things are worse than stepping out into the chilly weather only to realise you’ve forgotten your scarf or gloves! To save your staff from those frosty fingers and cold ears, why not keep a box in your office stocked with spare woolly hats, gloves and scarves? It’s a small gesture, but one that will be appreciated on those icy mornings!
9
TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF
Not everyone is thrilled by the idea of belting out Christmas karaoke in a crowded pub during the annual festive night out. While some may love the chance to sing their hearts out and socialise, others might prefer a quieter celebration— or may not want to attend at all. The key to a successful holiday celebration is making sure that all staff members feel comfortable and included in a way that suits their preferences. Participation should always be welcomed, but never expected.
8
ANTICIPATE THE BREAK
Sometimes we get so caught up in the whirlwind of preparing for the holiday break that we forget to actually look forward to it! Then, before you know it, you’re packing up and driving home for Christmas, wondering where the time went.
That’s why it’s important to take a step back and make time to connect with your team on a personal level. Talking about the things you’re excited about—whether it’s a special meal, a winter getaway, or just cosying up with a good book— reminds everyone that the holiday season is something to savour, not just prepare for.
7 A NO GIFT POLICY
We’re certainly not suggesting you channel your inner Scrooge, but it’s no secret that the pressure to spend money during the holiday season can be a major source of stress and anxiety. With all the gift-giving expectations, even something as simple as Secret Santa can feel like a financial burden for some. Why not introduce a thoughtful and budget-friendly alternative this year? Consider encouraging your team to swap preloved items, such as a favourite book, instead of buying new gifts.
6 MAKE SOME ME TIME
Set aside one evening a week to unwind and recharge-just for you. Whether it’s sinking into a hot bubble bath with your favourite bath salts, tackling a festive crossword puzzle, or rewatching The Muppet Christmas Carol for the third time, give yourself permission to truly relax. Turn off that phone, ignore those emails and enjoy a silent night.
5
SWAP OUT SOME SNACKS
As much as we all enjoy a chunk of Toblerone (who doesn’t?), indulging in too many sweets and chocolates during the holiday season can quickly lead to sugar crashes and energy slumps. While it’s tempting to snack on festive treats throughout the day, consider keeping a jar of healthy (but still festive) alternatives on your desk. Think along the lines of fresh satsumas, dried cranberries, or cinnamon-spiced popcorn.
4
START A CHRISTMAS CLUB
It might be a bit late to start a Christmas club for this year, but it’s never too early to consider establishing one for 2025! This can be a fantastic way for colleagues to come together to support one another in various aspects of holiday preparation. You could focus on budgeting and saving by sharing tips on how to set aside a little money each month, exchanging favourite festive recipes or coordinating rides for late-night shopping trips.
3
BREATHE IN THE AIR
Feeling a bit stuffy or drowsy? Try popping your window open for five minutes to let in some fresh, cool air. Studies have shown that cooler air is not only easier to breathe but also enhances brain activity, improves focus, and helps you think more clearly. Just be sure to close it again afterwards—otherwise, you might find yourself looking like Frosty the Snowman!
2 KEEP A SECRET STASH
It can be a bit awkward when someone hands you a card, and you suddenly realise you’ve forgotten to write one in return! Consider keeping a stash of spare Christmas cards in a drawer for you and your staff to use in emergencies. Don’t forget to include some pens in the drawer as well—this will save everyone the hassle of rummaging around for one when they need it most.
1
LET GO OF PERFECTION
You’re a perfectionist for 364 days a year, but you don’t have to be one on December 25th! Who cares if the tree isn’t perfectly decorated or if you’re still wearing that same Christmas jumper for the third day in a row? The holiday season is all about spending quality time with the people you care about. So, let go of that SBL mindset that drives you to create a flawless Christmas and embrace the moment. Enjoy the festivities in all their delightful, chaotic, chocolate wrapper covered glory! After all, it’s those imperfect, messy moments that often become the most cherished memories.
So, there you have it—a dozen delightful ways to help you and your staff ease the holiday hustle and truly enjoy the season! Remember, Christmas is about making memories, not just checking off a to-do list. Let’s trade perfection for connection and make this Christmas a beautiful blend of support, kindness and a little bit of holiday messiness.
Making Your School a Sustainable Wonderland
As we jingle our way into the holiday season, it’s the perfect time to unwrap some eco-friendly ideas to make sure your school stays on Santa’s nice list for sustainability
You know how the song goes—he’s making a list and checking it twice! There are plenty of straightforward actions we can take to be kinder to our planet. But when it comes to sustainability in your school, how can you ensure you’re on the nice list? We’ve compiled a few simple strategies to help you enhance your green initiatives over the next twelve months. This way, by the time Christmas comes around again, you’ll be confident that you’re at the top of Santa’s list!
SAVE THE TREES
We’re not just talking about Christmas trees here. Did you know that the UK uses a staggering 227,000 miles of wrapping paper each year during the festive season? The amount of card material used at Christmas could stretch between London and Lapland over 100 times! This makes it a perfect time to evaluate paper consumption and explore ways to reduce waste, both now and in the new year.
You may already be taking steps to minimise paper usage by opting for digital newsletters and communications. However, there are additional actions you can consider. For example, if you’re still relying on paper notices or signage, it might be time to transition to eco-friendly LED digital signs that can be easily updated with new messages and reused throughout the school.
Conducting a paper usage audit is another effective strategy to gain a comprehensive understanding of your current consumption. Are staff members relying on scraps of paper for quick notes and reminders? To promote sustainability, consider providing time management and reminder software that can complement existing planning tools.
Additionally, take a close look at your recycling program. Is it truly effective, and do staff members fully understand what can and can’t be recycled? Many people are unaware of the specifics, so ensuring clarity on recycling guidelines is crucial for maximising your sustainability efforts.
GIVE MOTHER NATURE A YEAR-ROUND GIFT
Sustainability isn’t just about what you can reduce; it’s equally about what you can create and expand. Enhancing biodiversity around your school is a year-round investment that benefits the environment and provides exciting, hands-on learning opportunities for your students. Picture cosy bird boxes in winter and buzzing bug hotels in summer—these small additions can spark curiosity and foster a love for nature among pupils.
Consider exploring various initiatives available to schools aimed at increasing green spaces.
Organisations like the Woodland Trust and the World Wildlife Fund offer fantastic examples of tree-planting schemes, reward programs and project guidance that can help you get started.
By involving your students in these initiatives, you instill a sense of stewardship for the environment.
If you’re thinking about upgrading your green areas, consider reaching out to local businesses for preloved items that can serve as unique and attractive features. For example, old pallet boxes can be used to create attractive planters that can be filled with butterfly friendly flowers.
Sourcing materials locally can significantly cut down on delivery emissions, resulting in less traffic and a smaller carbon footprint. Engage your school community by organising projects where students can take part in the design and creation process, fostering teamwork and creativity while enhancing their understanding of sustainability.
SPREAD THE JOY AND LEARNING
Now that your school is well on its way to earning a spot on the “nice list,” it’s time to share that eco-friendly cheer and spread the joy of creating a greener planet! Schools have a fantastic opportunity to build eco-awareness in the community by getting everyone—staff, students and parents— excited about sustainability.
Why not kick things off with some fun sustainability workshops? These can be great for everyone, not just the students! Why not make it a fun way to engage with the wider community, inviting them to join you for a special sustainability event? Consider reaching out to local green experts who are usually more than happy to share their knowledge and expertise. They can lead engaging discussions on topics such as composting, renewable energy, or native plant gardening, making the workshops both informative and enjoyable. Their insights can inspire everyone to think about practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance environmental awareness.
Consider reaching out to local green experts who are usually more than happy to share their knowledge
Additionally, use these events as an opportunity to gather input from the school community on exciting projects like designing green spaces. Encourage students, staff and parents to brainstorm ideas and contribute to the vision for outdoor learning areas or wildlife gardens.
Teaming up with groups like the UK Schools Sustainability Network (UKSSN) and local green projects can open a world of exciting eco-opportunities beyond your school walls. How about organising a fun clean-up day at a local park or getting students involved in a community gardening project? These activities not only help the environment but also build fantastic connections with your eco-loving neighbours.
As you embark on these sustainable initiatives, remember that every little action counts, and together, we can create a brighter, greener future for our schools and communities. So, let’s deck the halls with eco-friendly cheer and make sure it lasts all year round—after all, there’s no better gift than a commitment to sustainability!
Join the Resolution Revolution!
Whether you love them or hate them, New Year’s resolutions are a tradition that sees millions of people striving to start the new year with a positive outlook
Resolutions tend to get a bad wrap (we can’t resist a Christmas pun here), mainly because we tend to hear more about failures than successes. However, there’s an important lesson to be learnt from this: if we approach resolutions with an expectation of failure, it’s likely we won’t succeed. Making resolutions is a powerful expression of our desire to start the year on a positive note and reflects a commitment to personal growth and improvement.
As you gear up to return to school in January, creating the right mindset and atmosphere for you and your team is vital. Because when the pressure is on and paperwork is piling up, it can feel like too much hassle to stick to that promise you made yourself. So, here’s how, as a school business leader, you can take the lead on the resolution revolution. After all, the best resolutions are the ones that extend well beyond January 31st.
WHY DO RESOLUTIONS FAIL?
Put simply, most resolutions fail because people tend to bite off more than they can chew! No matter how well intentioned, for most people, it isn’t realistic to go from the comforts of Christmas and all its indulgent treats to running 5km a day. The key to long-term success lies in viewing resolutions as opportunities for gradual, sustainable change rather than drastic overhauls. By making small adjustments that can be
easily incorporated into daily life, people can achieve their goals without feeling like they’re making huge sacrifices.
For SBLs, fostering this mindset means integrating support for employee goals into the everyday culture of the school. You can play a crucial role in this process by helping people track their progress, celebrating milestones as well as successes. For instance, a simple comment like, “I saw you smashed that park run this weekend!” can go a long way in reinforcing a positive environment. Try to reframe the mindset – for both you and your team.
Instead of framing them as black-and-white situations of success and failure, consider them as opportunities for collective growth and learning. When an individual faces a setback, encourage open discussions about what can be learnt from the experience. Celebrate these moments as fun stories to share, illustrating resilience and creativity in the face of challenges.
ENERGISING THE ENVIRONMENT
A change in scenery is a fantastic way to refresh and reenergise the workplace as the new year begins. It offers a perfect opportunity for SBLs to make quick and costeffective changes that can invigorate the office environment. These adjustments don’t have to be significant; even small modifications can make a big impact.
For instance, to help people feel more in control and organised at work, you might consider updating desk accessories and organisational equipment to create a space more conducive to planning and goal setting. This needn’t be costly – it can be as simple as creating dedicated quiet ‘focus’ zones where staff can work on projects.
Creating dedicated spaces for relaxation and mindfulness can encourage employees to take breaks and unwind. Adding plants can improve air quality and create a calming ambiance, while noise cancelling headphones can help reduce noise levels for a more peaceful environment.
In addition, consider what’s available in the school’s surrounding area. If staff express a desire to adopt healthier habits, take the time to explore and highlight nearby walking routes or parks. You could even organise group walks or wellness challenges that motivate staff to engage with their surroundings while promoting health and camaraderie.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS – ALL YEAR ROUND
As many people enter the new year with a burst of motivation to make positive changes, it’s common for that enthusiasm to fade as the months roll on. To maintain this momentum, it’s essential to foster a culture of employee support that extends beyond initial resolutions. One effective way to achieve this is by regularly acknowledging milestones and celebrating achievements, no matter how small.
Celebrations can take various forms, from simple shout-outs in team meetings to more formal recognition programs that highlight exceptional contributions. By creating an environment where progress is celebrated, employees feel valued and motivated to continue their efforts throughout the year.
Celebrate these moments as fun stories to share, illustrating resilience and creativity in the face of challenges
HAVING THE RIGHT TOOLS
Committing to personal improvement goes beyond just having the right mindset; it requires practical tools to help employees effectively manage their workloads and maintain a healthy work-life balance. By providing these resources, schools can empower staff to integrate new goals into their daily schedules.
One crucial aspect of this is ensuring that employees have access to dedicated spaces for learning and skill development. Incorporating productivity tools like time planners can help employees prioritise tasks and track their progress toward personal and professional goals.
As we embrace the new year, it’s important for SBLs to recognise that supporting staff in their resolution goals benefit not only the individuals, but also the entire school community. By cultivating a culture that promotes personal growth and wellbeing, schools can nurture a motivated workforce, including teachers and support staff, who are equipped and enthusiastic to face the challenges of the year ahead.

BRAIN TEASER
Forgetful Frank has forgotten to attach name tags to his Christmas gifts. He remembers that the silver present wasn’t for his mum, and his dad’s present is either gold or red. The blue present belonged to either his sister or brother. If his mum’s present is red, his sister’s is gold, but if his mum’s is gold, his sister’s is blue. Who should receive each gift?
WHO SAID THAT?
1.“The
best way to
spread Christmas
cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
2.“Christmas Day is in our grasp, as long as we have hands to clasp!”
Do you recognise these well-known Christmas quotes?
3. “'T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”
5.“Christmas is a togethery sort of holiday. That’s my favourite kind.”

All I Want for Christmas
In these final thoughts of 2024, LAURA WILLIAMS encourages you to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible work you’ve all done over the last 12 months
It’s always a tough one, isn’t it? Narrowing down our festive wish list to just one thing. As school business leaders, you naturally have big aspirations. You want to see your students and staff happy and thriving, your schools flourishing, your tech running smoothly, and let’s face it, we’d all love a few extra hours in the day to get everything done without rushing!
The list of wants seems endless - and all too often, while we’re busy checking off everyone else’s priorities, our own get left behind.
As I sit here reflecting on the year gone by, the conversations I’ve had with many of you and the challenges you’ve faced (and conquered), if I could ask Santa for one thing this Christmas, it would be for you all to know just how amazing you are at what you do. I’d also wish for each of you to have the confidence to invest in yourselves as we head into the new year - because you truly deserve it!
We all deserve to give ourselves the gift of self-investment, whether it’s dedicating more time to self-care, enhancing professional development, or finally tackling that new skill you’ve been meaning to learn. This is exactly why I am so excited to be part of the new and improved EdExec Live events for 2025. With events taking place in eight locations across the UK, it’s the perfect opportunity to invest in your growth, learn new strategies and connect with old friends and new.
Take a moment right now to look around and see everything you’ve accomplished. You’ve kept your schools running smoothly, nurtured relationships and faced challenges head-on. The value you bring to your school and community is immeasurable. Now it’s time to invest in you. You’ve earned it, and we’re here to make sure you can do it.
As we wrap up another busy year, I want to wish each one of you a very Merry Christmas! May this festive season bring you moments of peace, joy and a well-deserved break. Enjoy the holiday season, recharge, and get ready to make next year a cracker.
Laura
