Love and good cuppa conquer all A recent survey of small- to mid-sized offices around the UK has found that the tumultuous state of the economy isn’t affecting the majority of our love lives – but it may be causing some to consider drastic measures to ensure their job security. Online office supplier Euroffice.co.uk asked over 520 office workers how much the current financial climate is affecting their love lives and a resounding 76% answered “not at all”. Furthermore, if anything, flirting has become the order of the day at the office with 65% acknowledging that it goes on and 18% of those admitting they openly flirt around the office and “don’t have to hide it”. In Scotland the flirt rates hit a whopping 82%. Worryingly, though, the survey revealed that a shocking 15% of respondents would play dirty to save their job if it was on the line – eight per cent of respondents saying they would go so far as to sexually compromise their boss so he/she couldn’t sack them!

The 2009 outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) virus is a pandemic of a new strain of influenza virus identified in April 2009, commonly referred to as “swine flu”. Although the source of the outbreak in humans is still unknown, cases were first discovered in the U.S. and officials soon suspected a link between those incidents and an earlier outbreak of late-season flu cases in Mexico. Within days hundreds of suspected cases, many of them fatal, were discovered in Mexico, with yet more cases found in the U.S. and several other countries in the northern hemisphere. Soon thereafter, the U.N.’s World Health Organization (WHO), along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), expressed concern that the A (H1N1) could become a worldwide flu pandemic, and WHO then raised its pandemic disese alert level to “Phase 5” out of the six maximum, as a “signal that a pandemic is at the imminent level”. Although virologists have noted that the outbreak has proven relatively mild and less fatal than historic pandemics, other health officials, including CDC director Richard Besser, worry about what might happen later in the year, stating that “we are not seeing any sign of this petering out. We are still on the upswing of the epidemic curve.”

Seven workers were taken to hospital and another 28 taken ill after a worker decided it was time to clean out the mini-fridge at a Californian call centre. The stench of rotting food was so bad firefighters had to clear the building, reports the San Jose Mercury. The mixture of old food and two different cleaning chemicals caused people to need treatment for vomiting and nausea. Authorities said the worker who cleaned the refrigerator didn’t need any treatment however – as she can’t smell because of allergies.

Brit’s the best A British man has been appointed as the new caretaker of an Australian tropical island. Ben Southall, 34, a charity fundraiser from Petersfield, Hampshire, emerged from a field of 35,000 applicants, reports the BBC. The six-month position, advertised as “the best job in the world”, requires him to live on Hamilton Island, on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. He was named as the successful candidate for the £73,500 position in a reality TV-style ceremony by Tourism Queensland.

After nine months of excruciating pain, Hajnal Ban, 31, a councilor in Queensland, became a ‘normal’ 5ft 4in. “A lot of young females have insecurities about their weight or their nose; mine was my height,” she told Brisbane’s Courier Mail. Over half of the British public (54%) admit to basing social judgments on the style of emails they receive, forming opinions on aspects such as the sender’s intelligence, age and social status, according to research by e-mail service GMX. The survey of 1,900 UK consumers found that email psychology is commonplace in Britain, with one in three adults admitting to purposefully adapting the language and style of their emails to create their own ‘email image’. One third of adults (33%) manage their emails to have an effect on how they are perceived, with ‘intelligence’, ‘authority’ and ‘calmness’ the most desirable aspects of email image. Women are twice as likely to feign cheerfulness as men, with one in four women (26%) admitting to using a false tone and symbols such as smiley-faces to mask their true feelings. Interestingly, the data suggests that many Britons now use their inbox as a shield against emotional or stressful dialogues. A large number of Britons purposefully choose an email over face-to-face or telephone conversation for emotional or stressful communication. For example, 30% regularly rely on email to converse with institutions and companies that make them nervous.

arranging meetings and conference calls according to research by scheduling tool Doodle, who believe workers could “reclaim Friday afternoon” and companies could save costs by working smarter when arranging meetings. They estimate that the time spent arranging meetings each year equates to £3,932 of an average manager’s salary and £1,886 of an administrative professional’s. On average, professionals spend five hours arranging times to hold seven meetings per week. Managers spend more time than administrative staff arranging meetings and yet one in every six meetings is rearranged.

LAS IGUANAS

HHHHH

What is it? Motto says it all: Eat Latin. Drink Latin. What we thought: Las Iguanas started life in Bristol, and has grown to become somewhat of an institution on the British High Street. What’s unusual about this Latin American chain found throughout the country is its independence. The people that ran the show back in its humble 1991 beginnings, still steer the ship. Founder Eren says of their beginnings: “[We] wanted to create something special, something alive, that made people feel good about themselves and feel good about life in general.” While it’s not always easy to feel good about the food (the enchiladas can be a bit of a gut bomb), the atmosphere and extensive drink menu (Mojitos galore), makes sure you leave with that unmistakable feel-good factor.

Chocolate & soft cheese cake What you need... 225g butter or margarine 225g caster sugar 4 medium size a eggs 175g self-raising flour – sieved 50g cocoa powder 400g icing sugar 1 Primula Deli Soft Cheese Zest of 1 lime ½ large red chilli, chopped finely

How to do it… Pre-heat oven to 180ºC. Grease and line two 20cm tins. Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the eggs and if the mixture starts to curdle, add a little flour. Fold in the remaining flour and cocoa powder with a metal spoon. Divide the mixture between two tins and bake for 25 minutes until golden and firm. Remove from oven and leave to cool. Ice and serve.

Not only does it actually work, but it’s mess-less and nice smelling too, so no standing around waiting for your whiffy self-tanner to dry. Nice.

When you’re feeling a bit posh with your dosh, and fancy venturing out for your midday meal, we present you with a monthly review of restaurant, pub and café chains that call our name

LAS IGUANAS

HHHHH

Let’s be honest, desktops can be pretty dull. But this little gadget will get your office space well and truly in the fast lane. A must-have toy for petrol heads, this mouse is modelled on the Porsche 911 and houses the world’s smallest 2.4G wireless receiver £29.99

Warmer weather leads to the inevitable shedding of clothing layers, which means enduring a few weeks of pale, vitamin D-deprived limbs while you get accustomed to the weather. That is, unless you stay one step ahead with SoBronze’s Bronzing Mist – an airbrush dry mist that leaves you instantly sun-kissed for up to seven days. Not only does it actually work, but it’s mess-less and nice smelling too, so no standing around waiting for your whiffy self-tanner to dry. Nice.

Gym bunnies of the world unite. For the modern office worker, lunch often consists of a whirlwind workout. Every month, we try out a class and report back

HHHHH

No longer do you even have to leave the office for your gym workout – though you may want to do this behind the safety of a very high cubicle partition. Vitalflow. com is providing Pilates classes via the internet in hopes of providing an alternative to an expensive gym membership. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is challenging at the best of times but much more difficult when times are hard as gym membership and personal training are seen as luxuries,” says instructor Josie McKenlay. “Our aim is to help people start or return to a healthy routine of exercise and diet.” Warning: performing elaborate backward bends at your desk may result in the occasional snigger.

Packing a punch

The saying goes that the best things come in sma packages, which would certainly fit this nifty little gadget from sound specialists BOSE. Packed into BOSE Computer MusicMonitor two-piece amplifie system is a big hit of noise that smacks you on the chin like a flyweight boxer delivering a killer blow. Just plug it into your audio device and enjoy the full-bodied sound without having to clutter up you surfaces with bulky speakers and subs.

Touch me There is a lot of bravado with phones these days – everyone wants the best model that looks the business. The T-Mobile Vairy Touch phone certainly fits that bill. Deceptively small, but without losing any functionality or usability, this touch-screen phone looks as good as it works. Best of all, its low price means this PDA-style phone is certainly within touching distance of any budget. £59.99 on pay-as-you-go

Comment: The chimmichanga a crispy and delicious brings new way to enjoy the ubiquitous lunchtime wrap, sure make your work colleagues envious.to

Dear Olé, Do you think a swine flu outbreak in the office is something we should anticipate? Ray, Maidenhead

pair of tedly worry to the breaks

Anticipate? Probably not. Prepare for just in case? Why not. While it’s unlikely your particular office will be struck with a bad case of the porcine influenza (also known as the A (H1N1) virus), it’s not a bad idea to take precautions. That means washing your hands, cleaning your keyboard, and giving your phone a onceover with bacteria wipes. I would say ditch the mask though, it makes you look a bit silly and you’re better off washing your hands that few more times.

busy, expensive airports. However, the potential transfer costs can be considerable. For example, Ryanair does not fly directly to Frankfurt, instead uses Frankfurt Hahn, which is around 60 miles from the city centre – and could equal a considerable taxi fare. There are other hidden costs involved with budget flying, which include charges for check-in, baggage handling or seat reservations. Also, the cost of in-flight meals is rarely included, which could lead to either another expense or a rumbling stomach.

BACK TO INNOVATION Two new products from Mitsubishi Pencil Co are set to take the UK stationery market by storm this back to school season. The first is the Correction Pen Plus, ideal for use with rollerball pens, unlike many conventional correction products, due to its quick dry consistency and matt finish. The second is the uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil, which guarantees its lead stays sharp using a core rotation engine that rotates as you write. This revolutionary function eliminates the chiseled edge effect that can result in a change in writing thickness. Marketing manager Stuart Barker said: “Year on year we introduce innovative new products that are influenced by our customers’ demands. These two new products are of no exception and complement our already extensive back to school offering.”
