Due to our BenFest special last week, there was no opportunity to report on the fantastic Children’s World workshops that the pupils of St. Benedict’s enjoyed on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th June. Paddy and Charlie from Children’s World put our pupils through their paces as they focused on resilience and the ability to overcome setbacks through improved confidence and positive communication. Each class enjoyed an hourlong workshop allowing them time to discuss the issues and develop strategies to bounce back when they hit a hurdle in life. Our thanks to Glastonbury-based Children’s World who we hope to see back at St. Benedict’s soon.

Year 5 had a ball at Wessex Water on Wednesday 19th June. Sue Goodland, Education Officer at Ashford Waterworks in Cannington orchestrated events, splitting the pupils into five groups and showing them to different river-side sites to build their dens. As a break from building, each group got to race their boats, with the winner from each group going through to the grand final! Once the dens had been thoroughly tested, it was time for the Grand Final, in which Casey’s boat was triumphant! There followed a slightly soggy celebration, during which the adults got rather wet as they were mercilessly attacked by the pupils! Thank you for inviting me along, Year 5; I had a fantastic day and you were all a credit to St. Benedict’s. Thanks too, to the fabulous Year 5 team and to Sue and Helen for hosting us, once again, at Ashford Waterworks. Mr Ranger

Friend of St. Benedict’s and Associate Governor, Roger Parsons, has been running Chess Club for a number of years and we are incredibly proud of this thriving club and grateful to Mr Parsons. Ideally Roger would like to hand over the reins to someone else, but we are struggling to find his successor…

Perhaps you’d like to work alongside Roger initially before taking over? Please let us know if you might be keen.

Pupils from Year 6 enjoyed the opportunity to take part in a high-octane Caribbean Dance workshop on Monday 17th June. Deborah Baddoo from Windrush Dance ran the session which left the Year 6 pupils breathless as they conjured up the spirit of Carnival followed by some back-breaking limbo. Next year, we hope to include much more dance in school as we aim to broaden our curriculum even more, and this was the perfect taster to whet our pupils’ appetites.

Catherine Clarke visited school last week to deliver an assembly on two fantastic local initiatives - the Glastonbury Youth Council and Youth Club. If your child might be interested, please drop into the Red Brick Building for more details (Youth Council is for children 11 and over).

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT – HELPING YOUR CHILD, HELPING YOU AND HELPING THE SCHOOL From September, all children in receipt of Pupil Premium will attend all trips for half price. We estimate this is a saving of £200 over four years at school. In addition they may be entitled to Free School Meals (£2.50 a day = approx. £1560 over four years) as well as access to free school uniform and other opportunities and savings. It’s no exaggeration to say that receiving the Pupil Premium grant could save you up to £2000 over your child’s time at St. Benedict’s!! If you think you may be eligible, or wish to find out more, please ask Mr Ranger or the office for more details.
