Eighteen lucky Year 5 pupils at St. Benedict’s have been enjoying the opportunity to participate in the ‘Mini-Police’ scheme. We are the first school in this area to be involved and the children are relishing every second. The idea is not that they are a police force at school, but rather that they learn all about the role and duties of police officers. So far, in their weekly sessions, the group have learnt about community work and found out more about day-to-day challenges like dementia. The enthusiastic mini-police team also ran a stall at the Local Community Event at Tor Leisure in October and have scheduled in a trip to a local care home to run a bingo session for elderly residents.
Glastonbury beat officer, Katie Moyse, who is co-ordinating the programme at St. Benedict’s is delighted with how pupils have reacted and is hoping to take the group to the regional Police HQ in the New Year. As well as being very grateful to Katie and her team, the miniPolice would also like to thank the Town Council for their very generous donation towards their wonderful uniform, which they wear with pride every day.
Both the boys’ and girls’ football teams ended their seasons last week. The boys signed off with a 5 – 2 win over Walton, goals courtesy of Valentino (2), Darsh, Devran and Toby. The girls fell foul of two own goals, with Elmhurst 3 -1 up having only had one shot on target! Despite this, -the girls’ team finished second in their league with the boys’ positions still to be decided. Well done all!
On Friday 29th November, a St Ben's Chess Team of twelve players, representing all year groups, drew an exciting, two-round match with Millfield Prep School, 12-12! This result was in doubt after the first round, when the score was 8-4 to MPS, but a great second round recovery saw St Ben's fight back to 11 and a half points all. Everything hinged on the last match to finish, which ended......... in a nail-biting draw! Special credit to Toby, who won both his games, and Venus, Fay and Declan, who showed great maturity in their play. We thank Millfield and their coach, Grandmaster Matthew Turner, for their hospitality. The last session of Chess Club this term will be on 9th Dec but there will be a Staff and Friends match vs the Pupils after school, 3.15-4.15pm, on Mon 16th Dec. Pupils will be informed if they are in the team, the size of which will depend on the number of adults we can muster for the Staff and Friends team. So if any Mums, Dads and Carers are available to play, would they please inform the Office. Thank you.

Saturday’s Glastonbury Frost Fayre was alive with visitors, all swarming to our town for a selection of crafty Christmas gifts and tasty treats. Dedicated members of the PTFA, ran our very own St. Benedict’s burger and hot dog stall outside the school. Stall organisers, Trudi Allen and Tina Lawford braved the elements all day, risking frostbite and aching backs to raise money for the school Minibus Fund. They were ably assisted by friends of the school and staff. Thanks to Rachel Whittaker, Heather Pople, Mrs Coton, Ms Kirby, Mrs Rood, Mrs Brown (and Mr Brown), and Mr Ranger. A delighted Mrs Allen and Mrs Lawford are proud to announce that we raised £600. HUGE THANKS to them for their efforts – we are VERY lucky to have them!

PARKING PROBLEMS It has come to my attention that some parents/carers are parking dangerously outside school. This is a particular problem at the back of school (opposite Proper Job). The message from the children of St. Benedict’s is clear… “DON’T PUT OUR LIVES IN DANGER!” It may be more convenient for you, or save you finding a space somewhere else, but you are risking lives if your car obscures a crossing place. Please do not park on yellow lines, even if just for a few minutes. Also, could you please not leave your engines running whilst waiting by the school. Children are particularly affected by air pollution as their lungs are still developing and it can increase their risk of a range of long-term issues including asthma. I’m sure we all share the same hopes for the children in that they are able to live happy and healthy lives, and small steps like turning your engine off will have that positive effect of improving air quality. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
Christmas Fair Friday 6th December We will be holding our Christmas Fair on Friday (6th December) in the school hall 3 – 5pm. Come and visit Santa’s Grotto, refreshments & B.B.Q., homemade gifts, crafts & local produce, Year 6 games, raffle prizes, tombola & sweet stall- something for everyone - bring your friends and family along! Please bring in donations of tombola items tomorrow and cakes on Friday. Please make sure all raffle tickets are returned to the school office tomorrow (Thursday 5th December) for the winners to be drawn at the Christmas Fair.
Christmas Lunch Wednesday 18th December Once again, the Glastonbury Festival Charity has very kindly funded our whole school Christmas lunch and we are pleased to be able to offer every child a free Christmas lunch on Wednesday 18th December. Menu’s will be sent home today - please complete the menu form advising us of your child’s choice and return it to the class teacher by Tuesday 10th December.
Carol Service Tuesday 10th December We will be holding our annual Christmas Service on Tuesday 10th December in St Benedict’s Church, 1.45pm for 2pm start. Please do come along and join us.
Christmas Jumpers Wednesday 18th December The staff are wearing Christmas jumpers in support of Save the Children to help create a brighter future for children. The children are welcome to join us in wearing Christmas jumpers or a Christmas themed outfit. Please bring a donation for the appeal. Those children not taking part should wear full school uniform.
