St. Ben’s ambassadors visit St. John’s School Four St. Benedict’s pupils accompanied Mr Ranger on a visit to St. John’s Infant School last Wednesday as part of the Year 2 – Year 3 transition. The Year 2’s got to enjoy the premiere viewing of their new transition mini-film, ‘The Door’, which stars Freida from Year 3 and Anna from Year 6. After the showing, Year 2 had lots of questions which were ably answered by Anna, Freddie M, Toby and Lexie in Year 6. We were very proud of all four ambassadors, who represented St. Ben’s confidently. Year 2 felt much happier after the session and are looking forward to life at St. Benedict’s.
Talented artists from St. Benedict’s relished a trip to Millfield last Monday, where they enjoyed the thought-provoking Sculpture Trail as well as a look around the gallery. The children, selected from all year groups, were accompanied by Mr Ranger and Miss Hopkins, as well as school governor, Sue Wootton, who arranged the visit. The temporary part of the Sculpture Trail was entitled ‘Other Wordly’ and features a wonderful array of ideas that really sparked the pupils’ imaginations. We are keen to have more sculptures at St. Benedict’s so the trip has inspired some of most creative minds. A huge thank you to Sue Wootton for making it happen.
The walls are bare in our new wellbeing room and we’d like to put some canvases up, so we’re challenging all our pupils and parents to take an incredible shot of local nature/wildlife that is eyecatching enough to display in school. Your challenge is to take a photo of wildlife/nature, this summer IN SOMERSET. All photos must be printed out (5 x 7 if possible) and handed in by the deadline of Wednesday 11th September. We will display the entries in an exhibition and choose a pupil and a parent winner. All photos must be your own original work. The winning entries will be on display in our wellbeing area by October half term.

This Wednesday is Transition Day, when our pupils will all get to meet their teachers and TAs for the next academic year. The current Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 will spend the morning (9am – 12pm) in their ‘new’ classes, while Year 2 and Year 6 will spend all day at their new schools. We are excited about welcoming Year 2 to St. Benedict’s and hope they will have a fantastic day making new friends and familiarising themselves with our school. Remember to be extra friendly to our new pupils as they are probably very nervous about their big day.
Friend of St. Benedict’s and Associate Governor, Roger Parsons, has been running Chess Club for a number of years and we are incredibly proud of this thriving club and grateful to Mr Parsons. He is keen to organise a team of 12 parents/staff who would be willing to play a match against the members of chess club on Monday (8th July) 3.15 – 4.15 p.m. If you are interested in taking part please contact the school office.
DON’T FORGET: Before school, line up in normal places, except: Year 3 line up in Year 6 places, as Year 2 will be in the block. At breaktime, line up in new places! Teachers and TAs will be around to help if it gets confusing!
Ideally Roger would like to hand over the reins to someone else in the Autumn term, but we are struggling to find his successor… Perhaps you’d like to come along and meet the club members and see what’s involved ?

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT – HELPING YOUR CHILD, HELPING YOU AND HELPING THE SCHOOL From September, all children in receipt of Pupil Premium will attend all trips for half price. We estimate this is a saving of £200 over four years at school. In addition they may be entitled to Free School Meals (£2.50 a day = approx. £1560 over four years) as well as access to free school uniform and other opportunities and savings. It’s no exaggeration to say that receiving the Pupil Premium grant could save you up to £2000 over your child’s time at St. Benedict’s!! If you think you may be eligible, or wish to find out more, please ask Mr Ranger or the office for more details.
Our Lionesses have been doing the country proud in the women’s World Cup and now your child has their own chance to shine as St. Ben’s has it’s very own World Cup Tournament, with the Lower School matches on Monday 15th July and Upper School on Tuesday 16th July. If your child wants to sign up, make sure they let their teacher know by this Wednesday (3rd July). The aim is to involve as many pupils as possible regardless of their experience or confidence levels: please encourage your son/daughter to take part – it’s a lot of fun! We will display all team and fixture news on the outdoor display board (outside Unicorn Class). Watch out for this from Monday 8th July.
The Little Princess fundraising Hair comes in all textures, colours and styles and we all take ours for granted (even when it's disappearing fast!), but some children going through cancer treatment lose their hair completely and this can really affect their self-esteem. Tianna in Year 4 knows someone going through this and she has decided to help.
In aid of The Little Princess Trust, Tianna is having 8 inches lopped off her beautiful hair this Friday (5th July). Her hair will go towards making wigs for children going through chemotherapy and could transform these children's lives. We at St. Benedict's love the fact that Tianna is doing her bit to help others and will send round a fund-raising tin on Friday for anyone who would like to make a donation or you can go to: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tianna-mar Tianna's target is £200, so every pound or two will help her towards her goal.
