Monday 4th March 2019 Please see our PTFA Facebook Page Contact school: sch.164@educ.somerset.gov.uk Website: https://stbenedictsjuniorschoolglastonbury.org/ Quote of the week: “Don’t be afraid, just believe.” Mark 5:36

World Book Day Wednesday 6th March This summer, we are keen to start work on our very own ‘World Garden’. The idea is for the space at the bottom of our field to be transformed into a space that allows our pupils to visit different parts of our wonderful world, all within a few steps. I envisage this area being a creative blend of buildings, sculptures, plants, trees and hedgerows. I am keen to make the school more eco-friendly and I would like to make our own compost and consider creative irrigation solutions.

World Book day: a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading….. and an excuse to dress up! We are inviting all children and staff to show their appreciation of the wonderful world of books by donning their best ‘magical’ themed outfit on Wednesday 6th March Let’s make this a World Book Day to remember!

WHERE DO YOU COME IN?

GLEE CLUB STAR AT TOWN HALL

In the first instance we would love the ideas of pupils, parents, carers and friends – we are sending home A4 design sheets: please draw/write down your ideas – perhaps you have visited somewhere and seen a particular style of planting? Maybe you are an expert in Arabic mosaics? Do you know which trees would be most successful in full sun? All ideas need to be handed in to class teachers/the office by 15th March 2019.

Tuesday 26th February saw the reopening of the Town Hall and St. Ben’s Glee Club, led by the tuneful Miss Grenter, were the star turn, writes your reporter Leonora Clark-Cornell… On Tuesday morning, Glee Club performed three songs at Glastonbury Town Hall; it was the reopening and 100 year anniversary of the market. Two of us were chosen by Club Leader, Miss Grenter, to speak on BBC Somerset, and the whole performance was then recorded and aired live. It was very exciting singing in front of the mayor and lots of people!

Then… after Easter, we will get started on the first stage of the garden and we will need every bit of energy and expertise we can get our hands on! Are you greenfingered? Can you donate a plant or sponsor a tree? Are you a carpenter, a builder or even a landscape designer? If you’d like to help, we’d love to hear from you!

Huge congratulations to the whole of Glee Club and to Miss Grenter for putting on such a fantastic show – you did the school proud! The BBC Somerset Live recording was aired to the school in Celebration Praise and can be still be found on-line if you wish to share it with friends/relatives.

Skip2Bfit th

On Thursday 28 February pupils at St. Benedict’s enjoyed a wonderful treat when they took part in skipping workshops, delivered by David from Skip2Bfit. The sessions were fantastic fun as well as reminding our children how important fitness is. During their workshops the children got to use the ‘counter skipping ropes’ that monitored each swing of the rope, with the idea that they could improve on their previous total. After each class had completed their workshops, the top scoring pupil, Sam Hopkins took on the staff champion, Chloe Mott in a live assembly challenge. In a riotous one-minute skip-off, Sam emerged victorious with over 120 skips! Bringing the workshops to St. Benedict’s was the idea of our school PE Co-ordinator, Tina Anderson. A beaming Mrs Anderson told the St. Ben’s Bulletin, “It was fantastic to see the children buzzing with delight!” A huge thank you to Mrs Anderson and to the children for their energy and enthusiasm throughout the day.

MONEY FOR NEW ROPE! The ropes used during the workshops (that count each skip) are available for sale for a limited time. The cost is £5 per rope (this is the same as the on-line cost, but you would need to pay an additional £4.99 for delivery if ordering on-line). If you wish to purchase a rope, please send in £5 in an envelope with the words ‘Skipping Rope’ and your child’s name and class on it.

PC HICKS At ST. BENEDICT’S 18th MARCH 2019 at 6pm On Monday 18th March, PC Mark Hicks will be visiting our school to give a very important talk on the challenges facing our children in 2019. PC Hicks gave the same talk at St. Dunstan’s last term and it was described as “excellent…but hard-hitting.” Mark will not pull any punches as he outlines the danger our pupils could be in, but he also offers solutions on how we can keep our children safe from the threats of such issues as the County Lines gangs – who are targeting Glastonbury amongst other towns and villages. PC Hicks will be joined by Beth Rowlinson-Baker, from St. Dunstan’s, who will give a frank talk on e-safety and keeping children safe on-line. Safeguarding our children is our number one priority and the better informed we are, the safer they will be.

I would urge you to attend this talk – it may be the most important thing you do this year!

ROCKTOPUS Please ask your child about Rocktopus who worked with the children today in school. You may view the song they performed, specifically for our school , at www.rocktopus. com/newsong.
