TALENT SHOW WEEK – Mon 20th – Thurs 24th May

Plans are underway for St. Ben’s most ambitious fund-raiser ever, so keep Friday 14th June free for the first ever BenFest – a festival of performing arts on our field. There will be stalls run by pupils, a bouncy castle and face painters as well as the usual raffle, and tombola. We will also have a real festival feel on the food front as we are delighted to announce the presence of a pizza van or two, aside from our traditional BBQ. Wash all this down with a drink or two from our Ben Bar and it’s starting to feel like quite a party already!

Are you a performer? Can you do circus skills or are you a singer/in a band? We have early slots reserved for pupils, but we would like to pack the evening with local/adult acts. As it’s a fund-raiser we are not able to pay our acts, so we’re hoping for some talented volunteers! Can you volunteer your time? Would you like to run a stall? Trade stalls are also available for £10 each – please sign up at the office. Do you make a mean cocktail?! – We’ll be looking for some bar staff to keep the drinks flowing.

Thursday 23rd May will see the finals of our Talent Show, with the heats taking place earlier in the week. The winner in each class will earn a slot at BenFest to perform their act to the crowds. This year BenFest, next year Britain’s Got Talent!?

So, children of St. Benedict’s, do you have a singer, a dancer, a musician or a performer in you? Maybe you’re a stand-up, a magician or you have a special party trick. Get practicing – your audience awaits! The Mark Silver BenFest Supergroup Do you play an instrument or have a great voice but have no band? Here’s your chance to shine! St. Ben’s parent and local legend Mark Silver is looking to put together a ‘SuperGroup’ for BenFest – please contact him on 07817 727725 if you might be interested.

RECYCLE AND RAISE MONEY FOR ST. BEN’S – IT’S A WIN-WIN! You have probably seen our newest arrival at the front of school – it’s our very own recycling unit. Please bring in any clothes, pairs of shoes and … Whatever we collect gets weighed and the school gets paid per kg. Why not have a spring clearout and bring any recyclables to school?!

Then you could be just the person we need! We are looking for parent governors to join our enthusiastic governing body. No previous expertise or experience necessary. If you might be interested, why not call in for more information.

READING HERO Shea managed not just a Teachers’ award this week, but also a Target Master and a Millionaires’ Club award – he’s had his three Weetabix for breakfast!

On Tuesday 21st May is our next meeting about BENFEST, our main summer fund-raiser which is fast approaching. Please come along and give us your views and ideas. The meeting starts at 2:30pm and will probably last approx. an hour.

Parents invited to Celebration Praise We would like you to feel as welcome as possible at St. Benedict’s and we thought it would be good to invite you in to Celebration Praise on Friday at 10:30am if your child is going to be awarded a Head Teacher’s or Teacher’s Certificate (or any other significant awards/prizes). We will let you know by 3:15pm on a Thursday. We are aware that some parents can’t attend due to work/other commitments, but please feel free to send someone else in your place. Join our Club Clubs start this week – if you haven’t already, please return your child’s signed slip indicating selections – as ever there’s lots to choose from, including Gardening Club, Chess, Production Club and Athletics, as well as Netball, Homework Club, Drama and Confirmation Club.

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT – HELPING YOUR CHILD, HELPING YOU AND HELPING THE SCHOOL From September, all children in receipt of Pupil Premium will attend all trips for half price. We estimate this is a saving of £200 over four years at school. In addition they may be entitled to Free School Meals (£2.50 a day = approx. £1560 over four years) as well as access to free school uniform and other opportunities and savings. It’s no exaggeration to say that receiving the Pupil Premium grant could save you up to £2000 over your child’s time at St. Benedict’s!! If you think you may be eligible, or wish to find out more, please ask Mr Ranger or the office for more details. Menus Lunch orders are due in tomorrow for the next 2 weeks. The menu and payment form is available on the school website:

A huge thank you to parents who have got the message and changed their habits. We are grateful to all parents who are parking sensibly and not placing children’s lives in danger.

Sadly, there are still parents parking illegally and dangerously, endangering our pupils. Whilst things seem to have improved at the back of school (the Proper Job side), a number of parents are still parking on the zig-zags at the front of school, making crossing the road extremely perilous for adults and children. We know who you are and the Police do too. I know it’s inconvenient to find alternative parking, but not as inconvenient as a fine or worse. Please STOP parking there. Also, please don’t be rude to people who ask you to move – they just care about our pupils’ wellbeing and safety. Let’s work together.

The week ahead Even if your child is entitled to free school meals you must complete an order form - without an order form your child cannot be catered for during this 2 week period.
