excellent: Extremely good, outstanding. “That trip to Bristol was excellent!”

Last Thursday, 3rd October, Year 6 spent a fabulous day at Bristol dockyard visiting the world famous SS Great Britain: our intrepid reporters Valentino and Tamara take up the story… The S.S. Great Britain trip was very exciting and educational. We highly recommend it if you enjoy learning about the history of the amazing Brunel and his very well-known ship the S.S. Great Britain. During the day, we got to dress up as passengers and learned about their lives on the ship. We had a guided tour of the ship where we got to see 1st and 2nd class rooms. If you want a laugh you can go and witness the amazing talking toilet. You will probably want to see the passengers, there are many lifelike mannequins aboard. We also saw a giant sculpture of Brunel with lots of his creations in the newly built £7.2 million museum. Teaching Assistant, Mrs Hurd, had a fabulous day, “it was a fascinating and very enjoyable trip and I wanted to stay longer.” Year 6 pupil, Kyle, agreed, adding that it was fun and educational.

One of the ways to inspire and motivate children about their future as well as encourage an aspirational outlook, is to organise visits from people in different professions and trades. If they know how shop-keeping links to Maths or how being a mechanic links to Science, they may be even more engaged in their learning… Would you be happy to talk to our pupils about your job? some detail about what you do followed by a Q and A session. The key things we’re looking for are enthusiasm and knowledge of the skills required for your role. Please let Mr Ranger know if you might be keen or if you would like more information about our careers morning.

Cross Country

Last week, a group of children represented St Ben’s in the first of 8 cross country races. The children raced at Millfield’s Edgarly site. Luckily, the weather remained kind and the sun shone down on us. Well done to all who came along. The children all performed beautifully and we even had a child finish in the top 10. If your child is interested in running and feel they might like to take part in the races they are welcome to come to Cross country club on Monday lunch times from 12:15 – 12:45. We meet in Unicorn class, children then eat their lunch after the club has finished. Our next race will be at Collet Park in Shepton Mallet on the 5th of November.

RECYCLE AND RAISE MONEY FOR ST. BEN’S – IT’S A WIN-WIN! You have probably seen our newest arrival at the front of school – it’s our very own recycling unit. Please bring in wearable clothes, paired shoes, handbags & belts. Whatever we collect gets weighed and the school gets paid per kg. Why not have a spring clearout and bring any recyclables to school?!

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT – HELPING YOUR CHILD, HELPING YOU AND HELPING THE SCHOOL From September, all children in receipt of Pupil Premium will attend all trips for half price. We estimate this is a saving of £200 over four years at school. In addition they may be entitled to Free School Meals (£2.50 a day = approx. £1560 over four years) as well as access to free school uniform and other opportunities and savings. It’s no exaggeration to say that receiving the Pupil Premium grant could save you up to £2000 over your child’s time at St. Benedict’s!!

Do you have any spare wool at home? We’d love you to bring it in as we are planning to make pom-poms as part of our ‘Well-Being Week’ (week beginning 21st October). Please bring it to the office.

If you think you may be eligible, or wish to find out more, please ask Mr Ranger or the office for more details.
