Monday 8th July 2019 Please see our PTFA Facebook Page Contact school: sch.164@educ.somerset.gov.uk Website: https://stbenedictsjuniorschoolglastonbury.org/ Quote of the week: “The first to apologise is the bravest. The first to forgive is the strongest. The first to forget is the happiest.” Unknown

Over the years I have had many conversations with parents and pupils regarding homework. Some parents and pupils love it, some say it leads to arguments. If I had a pound for every time I have heard the words, “We didn’t do Maths like that when I was at school!” I would have retired years ago! Today, I am sending home a questionnaire to gauge parental views on homework. I would be grateful if you would please take the time to answer the questions honestly and hand in your completed questionnaire by the end of this week (Friday 12th July). I will also be asking pupils for their views, as well as staff and governors, before making a decision on how best to tackle homework from September.

Tianna’s Challenge: MILLFIELD SPORTS FESTIVALS Last week some children took part in a variety of sporting activities organised by Millfield School in Street – these included swimming, tag rugby and trigolf. Please see the back page for a sport’s report written by the children.

On Saturday, Tianna had her gorgeous locks cut in aid of a fantastic cause – wigs for children undergoing chemo treatment for cancer. It costs £600 to make a wig and Tianna is trying to raise as much as possible to make a difference to these children’s lives. Tomorrow, before and after school, she will be in the playground with a bucket taking final donations, before she sends her total off. If you wish to support Tianna in her worthy cause, please bring in your donation or send it in an envelope marked ‘Tianna fund-raising’.

The walls are bare in our new wellbeing room and we’d like to put some canvases up, so we’re challenging all our pupils and parents to take an incredible shot of local nature/wildlife that is eyecatching enough to display in school. Your challenge is to take a photo of wildlife/nature, this summer IN SOMERSET. All photos must be printed out (5 x 7 if possible) and handed in by the deadline of Wednesday 11th September. We will display the entries in an exhibition and choose a pupil and a parent winner. All photos must be your own original work. The winning entries will be on display in our wellbeing area by October half term.

Friend of St. Benedict’s and Associate Governor, Roger Parsons, has been running Chess Club for a number of years and we are incredibly proud of this thriving club and grateful to Mr Parsons. Ideally Roger would like to hand over the reins to someone else, but we are struggling to find his successor…

Perhaps you’d like to work alongside Roger initially before taking over? Please let us know if you might be keen.

Next week, St. Ben’s has it’s very own World Cup Tournament, with the Lower School matches on Monday 15th July and Upper School on Tuesday 16th July. Letters will be going home this week. The team lists and fixtures are on display outside Unicorn Class… Please ensure your child has the correct kit for the event, as well as a water bottle and (weather dependent) a hat and/or sun-cream.

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT – HELPING YOUR CHILD, HELPING YOU AND HELPING THE SCHOOL From September, all children in receipt of Pupil Premium will attend all trips for half price. We estimate this is a saving of £200 over four years at school. In addition they may be entitled to Free School Meals (£2.50 a day = approx. £1560 over four years) as well as access to free school uniform and other opportunities and savings. It’s no exaggeration to say that receiving the Pupil Premium grant could save you up to £2000 over your child’s time at St. Benedict’s!! If you think you may be eligible, or wish to find out more, please ask Mr Ranger or the office for more details.

Menus Lunch orders are due in tomorrow for the next 3 weeks. The menu and payment form is available on the school website: http://stbenedictsjuniorschoolglastonbury.org/ Even if your child is entitled to free school meals you must complete an order form - without an order form your child cannot be catered for during this 3 week period.

Recorder and flute lessons Mrs Holt will be teaching recorder and flute lessons again in September – look out for letters in bookbags at the start of term!

Chess club Reminder – tonight’s session is the last this term – it will start again in September.

THE MILLFIELD Trip On the 5th of July, some of the students went on a trip to Millfield to play tag rugby. We took this as an opportunity to learn how to play it. It was a great experience. The only thing that I would think of as a downside to tag rugby was that you have to run around a lot and that is not so good during hot weather. Together we worked as a team and had a whole lot of fun- even though we had a few injuries. The weather was amazing but a bit too hot. Other students did a sports festival. During the festival, they did these activities: Dodgeball Real live computer games Archery They found it really exciting. It was very enjoyable. We would like to say a big thank you to all the TAs who took us to Millfield. Which includes: Miss Hopkins Mrs Redman Mrs Allen Mrs Hurd THANKYOU FOR TAKING US! Especially Mr Shaw who drove three lots of children there and back. By Anna Mulhern and Savannah Ferreira Marrafa WE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES!!!
