Newsletter 13 10th December 2018 Dear Mums, Dads & Carers, Christmas is coming… Oh no it isn’t! A reminder that tomorrow (Tuesday 11th December at 9am) is the deadline for our ‘Santa’s Sensational Sleigh’ design competition. Oh no it isn’t! Yes – IT IS! The prize is two tickets to the fantastic production of Aladdin, next Friday at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil. We will alert the winner tomorrow, so that they can decide who to invite! TIGHT FINISH TO FOOTBALL SEASON St. Ben’s 2 – Elmhurst 5 St. Ben’s played their final match of the season last Monday on the Strode astro pitches. As they kicked off, hopes were high as a win would see them crowned champions of Group 2. The team sprang into action and in the early stages Keetch, in particular, impressed; darting up the wings like an adder’s tongue. St. Ben’s were soon rewarded as they took an early lead with captain Gorman smashing in a free-kick from distance. Elmhurst quickly equalised though and it was an even game for much of the first half. St. Ben’s scored a second after some outstanding passing and appeared to be controlling the match, however the Elms struck back, pouncing like a leopard on Red Bull to draw level. The second half began in the same vein with St. Ben’s battering on the door of the Elmhurst defence like a furious Roman, but there was no way through and Elmhurst scored again; there appeared to have been foul-play and St. Ben’s keeper, Edwards, was as angry as a storm with the crowd agreeing that they hadn’t seen such leaning since their last visit to Pisa. This unfortunate debacle led to a series of rapid raids from Elmhurst who eventually triumphed 5 – 2. Deserved victors perhaps, but the scoreline flattered them as, like Tyson Fury, St. Ben’s had dominated all the early exchanges. As the light faded on a damp Street evening, so did St. Ben’s hopes of ending champions. This, though, was their only defeat of the campaign and they should take much pride and honour in the quality of their football and team spirit.
To cap off a hard-fought evening, Mr Shaw’s mini-bus driving was once again a pleasure to behold and we thank him for his dedication to the cause.
Remember remember these dates in December… Tuesday 11th: 6:30pm – Don’t forget your tissues, it’s the Year 3 Christmas Production at St. Benedict’s Church! Please ensure your child arrives at school at 6pm in time to transform them into their roles. Friday 14th: Christmas Fair – watch out for stickers coming home requesting different items for stalls – all donations very gratefully received. Tuesday 18th sees a double header. In the morning we’re enjoying an early Christmas treat as the whole school visits Strode theatre for a production of The Jungle Book. Please bring in any outstanding payments ASAP. Then it’s our Christingle Service at St. Benedict’s Church in the afternoon, led by David MacGeoch – you are all warmly invited to join us at 2pm. Wednesday 19th plays host to another day of festive fun as we not only have our Christmas Lunch (kindly paid for by Michael Eavis), but it’s also ‘Wear your Christmas Jumper to School’ Day (a reminder that it is not mufti day – so it’s just the jumper!). If your child has not already returned the slip notifying us if they would like a Christmas lunch or not please contact the school office. On Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th, Diana and her team are running workshops on ‘The story of Christmas’ for the children in St. Benedict’s Church; a reminder for all of the true reason for Christmas, amongst all the glitz, glamour and hefty overdrafts. We break up for Christmas on Friday 21st, but not before the children have enjoyed their parties. Please note that the last day IS A MUFTI DAY, to allow children to turn up in their party clothes (though please remember that the normal rules apply re jewellery, make up and heels etc.)
Please note also that there will be no clubs in the last week (with the exception of choir which will still take place on Monday as a practice for the Christmas service). Head’s Tea Party Treat for Lucky Pupils Last term’s Head Teacher’s Award recipients enjoyed a special treat as they got to sup a delicious hot chocolate in the beautiful grounds of the Abbey. Year 3 and 4 visited on Monday afternoon, with Year 5 and 6 relishing their treat on Thursday afternoon. As part of our commitment to the wider curriculum we are keen to maximise local links and give our pupils exciting experiences both in and out of the classroom… if you know of somewhere/ something local we may be missing out on, why not come on in and tell us.
Year 4 enjoy their mini-tour of the Abbey. Girls’ Football or Tag Rugby – Can you help? In the Spring Term, I am very keen to run a Tag Rugby Club and also a Girls’ Football Club. I would love to run them both, but unfortunately other commitments prevent me. Do we have any coaches/enthusiasts out there who may be willing to run/help at one of these clubs? If I could get volunteers to run one club, I will take on the other. Please come and see me/the office if you are interested and we can apply for your DBS clearance before Christmas so we can ‘hit the ground running’ in January. On a similar note, we are still seeking volunteers to hear readers. Huge thankyous to: Mrs Smith who volunteers in Cat Class Mrs Marks who volunteers in Peacock Class Mr Derbidge who volunteers in Unicorn Class Mrs Eastoe who volunteers in Spider Class Mrs Wootton who volunteers in Leopard Class Mrs Parsons who volunteers in Owl Class Your time is very much appreciated.
Chameleon Class and Tortoise Class remain volunteerless and would love a friendly ear to hear them read. Could it be you? Drama Club If your child goes to drama club on Tuesdays please could you pick up at 4.15 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday 11th December). Menus Lunch orders are due in tomorrow for the next 3 weeks. The menu and payment form is available on the school website: http://stbenedictsjuniorschoolglastonbury.org/ Even if your child is entitled to free school meals you must complete an order form without an order form your child cannot be catered for during this 3 week period. With best wishes
