Newsletter 14 17th December 2018 Dear Mums, Dads & Carers, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL! As we head into our last week this term, I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes for 2019. I have really enjoyed my first term as Acting Head and have some wonderful highlights to reflect upon as I enjoy the festive break. Amongst my top moments since September have been our whole school theatre trip to see Awful Auntie at Weston, visits from authors, the Year 3 Christmas play and Headteacher’s tea party visits to the Abbey, as well as the triumph of our Maths teams at the Wells Cathedral School competition. I’ve also enjoyed watching football matches and hearing children talk excitedly about the clubs they’re attending. There are so many things we do well as a school and I am proud that the staff of St. Benedict’s deliver such a broad education to your children. I have been delighted to see parents in school working with us to improve what we can offer and look forward to your continued support in 2019. Best wishes to you all for a peaceful and happy Christmas. Piers Ranger
Panto Tickets Winner Christmas congratulations go to Bobby Abbiss in Year 6 for winning our Santa’s Sensational Sleigh design competition. Bob’s design scooped him two tickets to Aladdin at Yeovil’s Octagon Theatre last Friday. MP visits St. Ben’s to present award On Friday 14th December, one talented artist had a special surprise during our Celebration Praise assembly. Erin Derbidge, of Year 4, came runner-up in James Heappey’s Parliamentary Christmas Card competition, which meant her design appeared on 1000 Christmas cards sent out by the MP; her card could well be gracing the mantel-piece of No. 10 Downing Street as we speak! Erin’s design was selected from over a thousand entries and Mr Heappey has promised to send her a framed copy in the new year. Huge congratulations to Erin and a massive well done to all the other pupils who entered – they also received a certificate from Mr Heappey during our assembly.
CHRISTMAS FAIR TRIUMPH Visitors to our Christmas Fair on Friday 14th December were struck by the wonderfully festive atmosphere of the event. Once again the Hall was packed with a wide variety of stalls and business boomed as the crowds entered. This year, we extended the festivities out into the courtyard, into which the delicious waft of barbecued burgers lured visitors. Glee Club were on top form as they entertained the Christmas revellers with top tunes from hit musical ‘The Greatest Showman’ (huge thanks to their valiant leader, Miss Grenter, who soldiered on through illness). Beyond the courtyard another new feature lay in store for the excited masses; St. Ben’s Christmas café, purveyors of outstanding hot chocolate and tasty treats! As if this wasn’t enough, Santa himself (ably assisted by his elves) put in an appearance in the St. Ben’s grotto and Year 6 pupils generously gave their time to create and run stalls until 5pm; as well as providing some unique entertainment, their enthusiasm was infectious and kept eager punters coming back for more. Thank you to all the Year 6 pupils who stayed, to all the parents, friends and staff that volunteered to run stalls and to our wonderful PTFA team who made the event happen. A special mention for Mrs Allen and Mrs Lawford who worked tirelessly in the week leading up to the fair – you are superheroes!
