Year 5 Osmington Bay trip Last week year 5 had an amazing time at Osmington Bay. They did some incredible activities like the Jacobs ladder, fencing, zip wire, the climbing wall etc. The activities were experiences that no another child could imagine. In their dorm they had time to have a break and spend time with their friends. Every morning everyone would get up at 7am and have a scrumptious breakfast and start the activities at 9am. The days were always packed with fun, with different activities all the time. In the evening everyone at Osmington Bay would do an activity with maps and find clues or a quiz but the exciting bit was that the children were alone in their groups and had to think by themselves. Our residential trip was enjoyed by us all and the teachers. It made us work together more and be more independent.
Last Thursday saw a riot of colour as the pupils and staff of St. Benedict’s donned their brightest socks to mark Downs’ Syndrome Day. The whole school enjoyed a heartwarming assembly during which they watched the moving ‘This is Me’ video which was released live on 21st March. Overall, St. Benedict’s raised £63.79 for the Ups and Downs charity based in Westonzoyland. Ethan Smith, whose brother, Sol, was one of the stars of the video told BFC News, “I felt happy for my brother, Sol, and I was really excited for those who are also getting help from the charity.” Please follow this link to watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A54xxtJ gxOg or go to the Ups and Downs website.

A.R. Heroes Congrats to Shiva for joining the Millionaires’ Club and to Lucas for hitting his target. Also a massive WELL DONE to Alex who scooped a triple award last week when he joined the Millionaires’ Club, the Hundred Club and hit his AR target – what a superstar!
ECO-BRICKS – SAVING THE PLANET A BRICK AT A TIME I am delighted that children are starting to bring in their Eco-Bricks and I have recently learned that Glastonbury has a ‘plastic-free’ initiative happening; this fits in perfectly with our school’s aim to recycle and reuse everything we can to avoid needless waste.
There is a collection point for Eco-Bricks at the Red Brick Building – please take yours there for collection on 7th April. For advice on how to create the perfect Eco-Brick, go to www.ecobricks.org and to register your finished bottle, visit GoBrik.com. Make sure you pack the plastics down as tight as you can in your bottle – using a wooden spoon or fire poker has helped lots of people!

COUNTY LINES AND ESAFETY TALK – A SOBERING MESSAGE Parents that attended last Monday’s County Lines and E-safety talk at St. Benedict’s left with a clear message, ‘we must work together as a community to stop people harming our children’. The talk, delivered by PC Mark Hicks and St. Dunstan’s Assistant Head, Beth Rowlinson-Baker, were a hard-hitting reminder of the dangers facing your children in their dayto-day lives. To help to address the threats posed, please consider taking the following steps: 1. Communicate with your child – be approachable. 2. Challenge your child – who are they talking to? Can they show you the history on their phone/device? 3. Remind them that you/an adult owns their phone, and you don’t have to pay the bill! 4. Be suspicious – who is their new friend? 5. SHARE YOUR CONCERNS – with the school, with the police – we are on your side and want to safeguard your child. 6. Remind them that anything they write on-line IS NOT PRIVATE. Would they be happy for you to read it? There were some excellent questions and some useful discussion afterwards and many parents agreed that they would be grateful for the opportunity to share e-skills – particularly in terms of filters on children’s devices and setting effective filters/checking history. I will arrange this in the summer term – please look out for it on future Bulletins… A big thank you to Beth and to Mark, who stressed that our local Police are very approachable and can be contacted if you have any concerns about County Lines.
Year 6 channel their inner Tyger Year 6 have been developing their poetry skills, using the famous Blake poem, ‘The Tyger’ as a starting point. We shared some of their work in Celebration Praise – one of my favourites was Ollie’s , which I’m sure you’ll agree paints a vivid picture:
The Wolf Wailing wolf, Hailing rocks Around the block, at the docks. My wolf is a spy until it dies, Wailing wolf, hailing rocks. Darkness breaks, Moon awakes, Night now brings the stars it makes. Deadly bite, Very tight, Every wolf will feast tonight. Ollie, Year 6
PARKING PROBLEMS Despite featuring a plea in the last couple of Bulletins, some parents continue to park on the double yellow lines opposite Proper Job – I have spoken to at least five parents in the last week. A member of staff has told me that a Mini is frequently parked there. If there are regular offenders, we will take down number plates and contact our local Police team to report which cars are blocking crossing places. This would be a shame as they have far more pressing issues to deal with. Can I also remind you to turn off engines while you are waiting.
Why not write down your problem and pop it into our box. Your question/ problem will be answered by our anonymous Year 6 expert and could appear in next week’s Bulletin. No need for your name.
Please let’s work together on this to ensure our children are healthy and safe. Thank you for your co-operation.
