ST. BEN’S ROCKS!!
Children at St. Benedict’s enjoyed a magical World Book Day this year as pupils and staff came in dressed as their favourite magical characters from the world of fiction. The idea was the brainchild of four Year 6 girls, Dana, Felicity, Pearl and Amber, who worked with Head Teacher Mr Ranger to make their ideas reality; amongst the fun was an assembly in which the girls organised all pupils into Hogwarts houses. Once it was determined whether they were a Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, the eager pupils had the opportunity to play ‘ground quidditch’ and take part in magic-based lessons, including an incredible potions lesson in Year 4.
Last Monday, St. Ben’s pupils got the chance to Rock out with creative musical duo, Rocktopus! Andy and Tom entertained a packed school Hall as they created a song around our school values. The song can be found on their secure Youtube channel by following this link:

It’s not just in school that our pupils are having fun and enjoying success…just ask members of the ‘Wessex Titans’ Football team who last Saturday triumphed in their Cup Final. As team players, the Year 6 lads found out the value of working together to achieve their goal – or in this case their five goals (the final score was an impressive 5 – 2 victory). CONGRATULATIONS from all at St. Ben’s!

IS YOU CHILD GETTING WHAT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO? The Pupil Premium Grant is designed to ‘narrow the gap’ between disadvantaged children and their peers – this could be academically, in terms of experiences /trips or practical issues such as uniform or Free School Meals. PC HICKS At ST. BENEDICT’S 18th MARCH 2019 at 6 – 7:20pm A reminder that next Monday St. Benedict’s will play host to PC Mark Hicks, who will deliver a talk about County Lines and other dangers facing your child in Britain in 2019. He will be supported by Beth RowlinsonBaker from St. Dunstan’s, who will talk about e-safety and social media – a major concern facing many families. We have 35 parents signed up already – why not come along…
This week promises to be a Science Sensation, as Science Week hits Glastonbury. From visits to Westhay to BugFest workshops, the children of St. Benedict’s will be up to their elbows in Science! The week has been organised by our very own Queen of Science, Mrs Ford and it promises to be something special. More from our roving reporters Bob and Caleb in next week’s Bulletin… DON’T FORGET! Your child’s Science homework is to create their own beast – if you haven’t seen the instructions, please ask your child’s teacher – we aim to show these at a special museum/zoo in two weeks’ time and we’d like an entry from ever child! Menus Lunch orders are due in tomorrow for the next 3 weeks. The menu and payment form is available on the school website: http://stbenedictsjuniorschoolglastonbury.org/
Even if your child is entitled to free school meals you must complete an order form without an order form your child cannot be catered for during this 3 week period.
PARKING PROBLEMS It has come to my attention that some parents/carers are parking dangerously outside school. This is a particular problem at the back of school (opposite Proper Job). The message from the children of St. Benedict’s is clear… “DON’T PUT OUR LIVES IN DANGER!” It may be more convenient for you, or save you finding a space somewhere else, but you are risking lives if your car obscures a crossing place. Please do not park on yellow lines, even if just for a few minutes.
Also, could you please not leave your engines running whilst waiting by the school. Children are particularly affected by air pollution as their lungs are still developing and it can increase their risk of a range of long-term issues including asthma. I’m sure we all share the same hopes for the children in that they are able to live happy and healthy lives, and small steps like turning your engine off will have that positive effect of improving air quality. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. CHESS CLUB Monday Chess Club has now finished for the term but will run again during the second half of next term, starting Monday 3rd June. Players are encouraged to keep their game at a good standard by playing friendlies at school and at home, and also keeping an eye on the screen in the school hall where puzzles from the school website will be displayed at lunchtimes. Mr Parsons is hoping to organise matches against Wells Cathedral and Millfield Prep next term.
