READING ROCKS! It’s official – reading is brilliant!
As part of their studies, Year 6 visited London on 13th-14th February. After a mindnumbingly early start, they reached the capital just in time to see a procession of horses outside Buckingham Palace. Then it was on to their London Eye flight – an opportunity to soar above the skyscrapers before heading to Parliament for a chance to see the Houses of Commons and Lords in session. Day One was completed with a delicious meal at the Giraffe Café and a leisurely stroll along the South Bank before reaching their hostel next to the incredible St. Paul’s Cathedral. Day Two saw the intrepid adventurers take to the water for a River Cruise before heading to the ‘sciencesational’ Science Museum. We were very proud of how our pupils represented St. Benedict’s and the way in which many of them overcame their fears. A huge thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to take part.
St. Benedict’s School ran an Accelerated Reader word count competition from 4th – 15th February, pitting each class against its year group buddy. The results were incredibly impressive, as you can see below. Following the announcement in celebration praise on Friday 15th February, the winning class in each year group got an extra break, as well as a book for their class – arriving after half term! Well done to all classes for a truly amazing effort – more competitions soon… Cat Class: 121,076 Owl Class: 524,452

IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S COMPREHENSION SKILLS Before half term I sent home a ‘Guide to Home Reading’. You’ll also find a copy of this in your child’s reading record. Please give these questions a go, as I’m sure you’ll notice your child’s comprehension skills improving.

IT COULD BE YOU! Parents and Pupils… Would you like to contribute to our bulletin? We’d love to dedicate a section each week to you. Amazing book that you’d like to review? Your team won the cup and you scored two? You’re a poet whose words paint beautiful scenes? You’ve raised some money in a bath full of beans?
Accelerated Reader: Last week, Sam in Year 5 became our latest member of the Millionaires’ Club for reading one million words since September! Well done, Sam!
HERBIE’S FIELD – PLANTING FOR THE FUTURE! On Friday 15th February, six lucky Year 6 pupils got to don their wellies and head over to Herbie’s Field, on the outskirts of Glastonbury, to plant a tree. The tree in question was an apple tree that has been purchased by the school as part of the Town Council scheme to rejuvenate this land so that it can, once again, be used as the location for the Glastonbury Fair and other local events. The pupils were excited about the idea of seeing our tree grow over the years.
Tell us what you’ve been up to and you could feature on next week’s bulletin.
Spotlight on Attendance: As we enter the second half of the spring term, we’re hoping attendance will improve. Remember it’s really important to get into school if you possibly can, so if it’s just a bit of a sniffle or a nagging cough, put on a brave face and come on in. SAVE THE DATE: Saturday 30th March: In our last letter we announced that Diana and her team are holding a fantastic event on 30th March during which children and adults can create amazing clothes by re-using materials. There will then be a cat-walk for children, followed by adults, during which everyone can strut their stuff, showing off their fabulous new creations! This event is actually taking place at Glastonbury Town Hall not in St Benedict’s Church as originally stated.
Science Week Monday March 11th – Friday March 16th I am very excited to be writing to you about the up and coming amazing Science Week in school! The children will be involved in science activities all week! To start the week, there will be a visit for all classes from BUGFEST and all their invertebrate friends! If you want a sneak preview - check out the website: https://bug-fest.com/meet-the-creatures/! Discovered! REMINDER: Family Homework Competition WIN a family ticket to We the Curious (@Bristol)
New species are still being discovered all the time in the natural world and we would like you to imagine you are a naturalist and have found a creature unknown to science. For your homework over the next couple of weeks you need to make a project that explains all about your imaginary creature.
It is up to you how you present your project. It could be a book, leaflet, diagram or poster. What about making a model, can you make its habitat? You could make a powerpoint presentation or film. You may have other ideas. You need to think and present your work as if you are a scientist. The best entries will be creatures that could possibly really exist in the natural environment.
Most of all you need to have
fun planning and making your entry.
Everyone should have a go.
The projects are to be handed in during Science Week – 11th-14th March.
There is a prize for the top entry in each class as well as the ticket to We The Curious (formally At Bristol). All entries will also be displayed in a pop up science museum in school (at a date to be decided following science week) and everyone will be invited to come and see the amazing projects. The winning entries will be put on the school website.
Have you completed your entry yet?
