Welcome to the Arts Centre The spring and summer season sees the Arts Centre bursting once again with new shows and fresh talent, covering most areas of the arts. A few things to look out for include the return of Stuart Maconie to his alma mater to discuss his new book, The People's Songs, and lifelong obsession with music; vampire junkies have a double-pronged treat in store with productions of both Dracula and Nosferatu; music-lovers are well served with a handful of shows, including Spiers and Boden and Cara Dillon, dubbed as having “quite possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice” by Q Magazine, no less; and the traditional alfresco midsummer spectacular is a reworking of the legend of everyone’s favourite outlaw, Robin Hood.

The year is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of a vast technological leap, scientific mastery and media innovation. Poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are locked in a struggle where only the fittest will survive.

Leaping into action, eager to unleash themselves on the lives of famous actress Arkadina, her son Konstantin, and their lovers, they discover unexpected comic opportunities. Their enthusiasm and innocence allows us to see Chekhov anew. We will laugh even as their delicate handling of tragic scenes move us. Spiers and Boden present: Goodbye….the Final Tour

Box Office 01695 584480 edgehill.ac.uk/artscentre

© Christopher Knight

Tickets £15.00 / £5 Edge Hill University students

Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene”, and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo, Bellowhead’s moonlighting band-members John Spiers and Jon Boden have made spontaneous, punky English folk together for over ten years. Loud, proud, and with only a few acoustic instruments – fiddle, guitar, assorted squeezebox instruments, a stomp box and their voices – they create a multitude of textures upon which they present their traditional stories and dance music. They are as at home playing to 50 people in the intimate setting of the back room of a pub, or 10,000 on the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival. Catch the duo while you can.

Hammer & Tongs Tickets £10 / £8 concessions / £5 Edge Hill University students and school parties of 10 or more

Hammer & Tongs digs deep into the human compulsion to argue the toss. Two men and a woman tiptoe into tiffs, debate high-mindedly, negotiate shoals of red herrings, take offence, and descend into glorious, undignified, disgraceful bad behaviour. From farcical fisticuffs at a wedding disco to squabbling for control of the tv remote, Theatre Alibi presents a very human comedy – physical, funny, absurd, musical, moving, and absolutely bloody-minded. “As always with Theatre Alibi, the telling is an inventive delight.” The Guardian 

Who’s Been Sitting in My Chair?

Tickets £5 / £18 family ticket (3 children and one adult or 2 children and 2 adults)

A delightful and playful version of a well-known tale – with porridge and bears and one-two-three chairs. A tale that’s not too BIG and not too small but just right. Mind you, telling this story is not so easy when it's wintertime and those sleepy bears just won’t wake up from their dreamy slumber. But spring in the air puts a spring in all our steps, and when Small Bear gets lost, we all have to go on a bear hunt! With original music, this play is for everyone who can count to three – especially if you’re aged 3 to 7.

Deranged gangsters, corrupt cops, devious government agents – they all want The Package. The Package contains everything you ever wanted – and some things you never wanted. All your dreams come true; all your nightmares come alive. Sophisticated mobster Moffat battles his way through a battery of bizarre opponents to reach for the ultimate prize. Blackly funny and ludicrously violent, The Package invites you into a warped but weirdly seductive world where The League of Gentlemen meets Tarantino. The Package will amaze, appal and amuse. And all the while, it's fiddling with the strands of your moral fibre.

Saturday 29th March 7.30pm

Tickets £10 / £8 concessions / £5 Edge Hill University students and school parties of 10 or more

Monroe as we’ve never seen her before: alone in her bedroom, in dressing gown and slippers. No glitz, no glamour, no masks. Overdosed on pills, the woman behind the icon unravels her remarkable life and bares all, revealing a biting intelligence, a frustrated talent and an imperfect body. This stark confessional (DiMaggio, Gable, Miller, Hyde, her mother – they’re all here) offers a radical interpretation of the Hollywood legend and leads us, in real time, to the very moment of her death. "A fantastic performance… a great production… an absolute must." Broadway Baby

In 1972 Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown star in Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried). This film is based on the true story of Linda Lovelace, who is used and abused by the porn industry and her coercive husband, before taking control of her life.

Cert: 15 Running time: 128 mins

Richard Curtis’ time travelling romantic comedy tells the tale of Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) who, at the age of 21, is told an incredible family secret by his father (Bill Nighy): all the men in his family have the ability to relive their past. He can revisit any moment in his life to try things differently until he gets them perfectly right. Obviously Tim uses his powers wisely – to get the girl of his dreams.

A screen adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ play about the thoughts, dreams and waking lives of inhabitants in the fictional Welsh fishing village of Llareggub (try reading it backwards!). This 1972 version features Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and was directed by Andrew Sinclair, who will introduce the film and be available for Q&As after the screening.

WikiLeaks, led by Julian Assange, exposed a whole world of state-sponsored skullduggery, leaking classified information onto the internet, and starting a debate around secrecy and national security that rumbles on today. This dramatic thriller tells the story that culminated in the exposure of deception and corruption at the highest levels of power, and turned an internet upstart into one of the 21st century's most controversial organisations.

The true story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. A pulsequickening thriller, and a complex portrait of the effects of globalisation.

This is the tale of one tight-knit family, and the three couples bound to it, as they experience the joys and heartache that punctuate all relationships. A jubilant, heartfelt musical about the power of home, the hearth, family and love, all to the sound of The Proclaimers.

Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, will stop at nothing to get what he wants. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. Based on Irvine Welsh’s book, this tale is a mindblowing cocktail of drink, drugs, sex, and violence.

While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a policeman (Channing Tatum) springs into action to save his child and protect the president (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily-armed group of paramilitary invaders.

After becoming pregnant, Philomena was sent to Seán Ross Abbey in Tipperary where she raised her son Anthony for three years. She was forced to work in the convent’s laundry before he was adopted, for a price, in the US. She never saw him again despite efforts to trace him – and his desperate efforts to trace her. 50 years on, Philomena (Judi Dench) teams up with a journalist (Steve Coogan) to track down her long-lost son.

Jasmine French (Cate Blanchett) is a former New York socialite fallen on hard times. Returning to her estranged sister in San Francisco, it’s not long before old pretensions and delusions resurface, as Jasmine desperately tries to return to the material heights of her former life, to the detriment of all involved. This comedy-drama is, however, a return to former glories for film legend Woody Allen.

Small Town Inertia Jim Mortram FREE

‘My work is all about acknowledgement, listening and sharing. On your own doorstep there are people with a universe of stories within them, and the place you are at can answer every question you have…you just have to look hard enough,’ says photographer Jim Mortram. So for the last few years Jim has been following the lives and telling the stories of an expanding group of people ‘stuck in a maddeningly unbalanced position’ who live within a three mile radius of Dereham, the East Anglian town that is his home. Jim was selected as one of the British Journal of Photography’s 20 Photographers to Watch in 2013.

The Motorway Service Station as a Destination in its Own Right FREE

In 2011, Sheffield’s Bank Street Arts invited a diverse group of photographers to respond to nothing more than an 11-word brief: The Motorway Service Station as a Destination in its Own Right – the evocative title of a volume of poems by celebrated British poet and Bank Street Arts patron Simon Armitage. Some chose to work using the title alone as a starting point, navigating maps of their own design, while others explored connections they’d made with Simon’s poems.

The result is an intriguing exhibition of contemporary photography, inspired by the same source but producing a very different set of responses.
