Film Exhibition 3
Welcome to the Arts Centre The nights may be drawing in again, but take a look at The Arts Centre’s Autumn programme and there are plenty of reasons to head out. Olivier Award-nominated comedy Eric and Little Ern will certainly bring a little sunshine, and more nostalgic light relief comes in the stocky shape of John Godber’s classic play Bouncers, recalling boozy nights out in the eighties. Late-eighties icon Phil Cool will be showing he’s still got it, while Ashley Hutchings and Ken Nicol, taking a break from regular band Steeleye Span, showcase their work as a duo. Students and lovers of the classics will be treated to typically innovative performances of work by Austen, Ibsen and Fo – look out for discounts for school parties, but there’s something for everyone amongst our usual smorgasbord of live performance, dance, music, comedy and film.

Tickets £10 / £8 concessions / £5 Edge Hill University students and school parties of 10 or more
Identity Crisis explores one black woman’s identity as told through Phina’s own journey from model to the big and small screens and beyond. In the voices of a dozen characters she traces the use others have made of her identity and thereby the image of black women in the media. Through live performance, radio waves, photographic image and good oldfashioned storytelling, this hilarious and insightful show looks at what people have taken her image to mean over the years, and how she herself has shaped her own very particular worldview.

Phina’s travels as an actor have taken her from her native Liverpool to Hollywood and back. She is familiar from Radio Merseyside and for her performance as Liberty Baker in ITV's Footballers’ Wives, for which she won a Screen Nations Award for Favourite TV Star.

This production is the professionally-led premiere of They Shoot Dogs, and features some of Edge Hill University’s recent and highly successful Performing Arts graduates.

United We Stand focuses on the events that led to the imprisonment of building workers Des Warren and Eric Tomlinson (aka actor Ricky Tomlinson, from The Royle Family). It reflects the great tide of anger which rocked the very foundations of the established political elite, examines the extraordinary political will of all the participants, and shares with us the anguish of falling prey to a flagrant miscarriage of justice. Set in late-19th century Germany, the musical follows a group of teenagers as they set out on voyages of self-discovery and sexual awakening. First performed in 1906, theatre critic Kenneth Tynan later called Wedekind’s original play “a marvel of humane audacity, a lyrical indictment of puritan superstitions… not only ahead of its time, but ahead of ours.” New York-based critic John Heilpern called this radical musical reinvention “a kind of miracle…the best new musical I have seen in a generation.” Here a young cast rises to the challenge of emulating previous critically-adored productions. This amateur production is presented by permission of Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.

The five Bennet sisters are husband-hunting, but for the spirited Elizabeth Bennet not just any man will do. An encounter with the handsome Mr Darcy does not seem very promising, however first impressions can be misleading. Two actors play 21 characters, cramming 400 pages of action into just two hours, in this witty and inventive new adaptation of Jane Austen’s much loved novel. Join us for debates in drawing rooms, gossip in magnificent ballrooms, and turns about the garden.

Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant Aurora. Spider-Man's most important battle has always been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. Only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than himself. And as his old friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common.
Based on Thérèse Raquin, Émile Zola's scandalous novel, In Secret is a tale of obsessive love, adultery and revenge set in the depths of 1860s Paris. Thérèse (Elizabeth Olsen) is a beautiful but sexually-repressed young woman trapped in a loveless marriage with her sickly cousin Camille (Tom Felton) by her domineering aunt (Jessica Lange). Thérèse spends her days confined behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings watching her aunt play dominoes with an eclectic group. After she meets her husband's alluring childhood friend Laurent (Oscar Isaac), she embarks on an illicit affair that has tragic consequences.

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. When Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case, they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.
Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them - and us - on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. The Fault in Our Stars is based on the number-one bestselling novel by John Green and explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.

A Hard Day’s Night documents a day in the life of the band with Beatlemania in full swing. To mark the film’s 50th Anniversary, the film has been fully restored, with missing parts of the original negative restored. Giles Martin, son of The Beatles’ producer George Martin, used a monaural mix of the movie’s closing song, She Loves You, for the stereo track. The result is a splendid tribute to this endearing, enduring film. As well as the famous four the film also starred Anna Quayle, Bob Godfrey, Robin Ray, Lionel Blair and Patti Boyd.

In January 1958, Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney), aged 21, was unexpectedly called upon to oversee the legendary Paris fashion house established by the recently-deceased Christian Dior. As he presented his first collection for Dior he instantly ascended to the heights of haute couture's elite class. During Saint Laurent's breathtaking and groundbreaking show, he was introduced to Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Gallienne), patron of the arts, future love of his life and lifelong business partner. Three years later, the two founded the Yves Saint Laurent Company, which would rapidly become one of the biggest fashion houses on the planet.
Clint Eastwood's big screen version of the Tony Awardwinning musical tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the New Jersey tracks who came together to form sixties pop group The Four Seasons. Their trials and triumphs are accompanied by the hit songs that influenced a generation, and are now being embraced by a new generation of fans.

12° North

A photographic documentation by Helen Newall, mapping the journey of a company of twelve talented and emerging dance artists, learning their craft as dancers, creators, teachers and entrepreneurs. The exhibition covers the development of emerging dance artists, during the rigours of class and in performance on tour. 12° North is a North West graduate dance company at the centre of a research project, led by Karen Jaundrill-Scott with Debbie Milner, investigating employability of the emerging dancer. Project documentation, which supports this investigation, is itself part of Helen Newall’s wider interrogation of performance documentation and its ability to ‘save’ ephemeral performance.
‘12° North produced a diverse triple bill which shone a light on the immense talent in the region. It’s vital to see this level of work happening in the North West and creates another stepping stone in the progression routes of young dancers into a professional career.’ Hannah Robertshaw, Youth and Community Dance Director - Yorkshire Dance The company is directed by a team of industry professionals which includes Karen JaundrillScott, Debbie Milner, Gil Graystone, and Giorgio de Carolis.
