“The Theatre is a school of tears and laughter” Lorca

The greatest Spanish playwright of the twentieth century was murdered 80 years ago by fascists in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. In these plays, his three great masterpieces, love and loss, longing and duende, the spirit of the earth, fuse in passionate dances of life and death.

Tuesday 15th & Wednesday 16th March 7.30pm

Blood Wedding

translated and adapted by David Johnston

An atmospheric new translation of Lorca's evocative meditation on fate, internecine strife, tradition, passion and repression. Lorca was inspired by the true story of a fatal feud between two families in Almeria province. This powerful new version by Professor David Johnston stays close in spirit and letter to the original Spanish: he interprets Lorca's original with marvellous directness, and the result is a powerful poetic text which captures all the violence and pathos of the play for an Englishspeaking audience.

Yerma

Lorca spoke of his inspiration for his final great work: “a very old widow who kept an inexorable and tyrannical watch over her unmarried daughters. They were prisoners deprived of all free will, so I never spoke with them; but I saw them pass like shadows, always silent and always dressed in black”. This acclaimed adaptation shows us the astonishing modernity of the writing, speaking powerfully as both political metaphor of oppression and compelling domestic drama.

In a remote Spanish village Yerma, a woman full of life and passion, longs for a child but is unable to conceive. This compelling and elemental tale of a woman's quest for a child taps into some of the most universal themes of theatre - love, passion, sexuality, marriage. In this epic glory, vibrant and sweeping, with elements of dance and song, Yerma is an exhilarating theatrical event.

in a new English version by David Hare

“Laughter - black and bitter - is to modern tastes, and is caught deftly in David Hare's vivid and sardonic new version” The Daily Telegraph

adapted by Pam Gems

“Pam Gems' magnificent adaptation of this poetic tragedy is … soft, yet as hard as the sun-baked soil” The Guardian

There is just one week until Kate Mercer’s (Charlotte Rampling) 45th wedding anniversary. But then a letter arrives for her husband (Tom Courtenay). The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. By the time the party is upon them, there may not be a marriage left to celebrate.

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. A gothic romance starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam.

Celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail. The peace and tranquillity he hopes to find, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by his long lost friend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer. The pair have a completely different definition of the word adventure and so the fun begins.

With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered. The men must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against almost impossible odds.

In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) is enlisted by a government official (Josh Brolin) to aid in the war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant (Benicio Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in.

Eilis’ family in Ireland are unable to provide her with the life she needs, so they send her to live in Brooklyn. Her prospects initially look bleak, but she begins to settle in after she meets Tony.
