Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor Welcome to Edge Hill University. I am delighted that you have chosen to study with us.

Edge Hill University is, at the moment, one of the most popular and successful institutions in the country. We are one of just a few universities in England that saw its applications rise in 2012 - by 7.0% - despite a national drop of 8.9%. This places us among the top four universities in England for increased applications and is a clear indication of our excellent reputation as an excellent place to study.

This booklet tells you everything you need to know about what to do, where and when. And if you still have questions, there are contact details for our teams at the back.

Welcome to First Week (29 April to 3 May)

Starting University is an exciting new stage in your life. ‘First Week’ is all about settling in to your academic and social environment, meeting your tutors, making friends and generally finding your way around. As well as providing an introduction to your course, there will be opportunities to find out how to make best use of the Library and IT systems, and the full range of student support services available to you.

Your Faculty will organise your ‘First Week’ Programme which is outlined in your pre–course information. This is a living and learning experience and comprises a series of activities to welcome you to the University and to introduce you to your academic life.

The most important thing about ‘First Week’ is that you participate fully and have a good time. You are required to attend all your course-based sessions.

A note about your teaching timetable after First Week Full time students taking professional courses in the Faculty of Health and Social care can normally expect to be in University Monday to Friday, except for the time that they spend on placement. Sessions can be scheduled from 9.00am to 6.00pm. You will receive full information outlining the exact details of your taught sessions, prior to your start and during ‘First Week’.

Enrolment Every student starting a course at the University is required to complete the University enrolment process at the beginning of the academic year to become a member of the University and to activate your IT/Library account. This will: -

Ensure that your records are correct on the University Student Record System; Allow you to confirm that you agree to abide by the University Rules and Regulations; Confirm your attendance which will release your student funding including loan (Home students only), payment of the NHS Bursary for Pre Registration Nursing Students and PGCE payment of any TA Bursary; Provide you with your ‘Unicard’ which is your University ID card; Issue your University account to access a range of IT resources and services to support you with your studies, including book loans, access to electronic resources both on and off campus, access to student PCs and an Edge Hill University student e-mail account.

Admissions and Enrolment Outstanding conditions If there are other outstanding conditions associated with the offer of a place such as medical or CRB clearance, you will be able to provisionally enrol and you should attend your enrolment session and other ‘First Week’ activities as indicated. You will be expected to meet any outstanding requirements promptly however and you will be withdrawn from your course if these are not satisfied.

You cannot undertake placement activity without medical and CRB clearance.

Please note that originals must be provided. Copies will not be accepted.

International Student ID If you are not an EEA national, you must bring your original passport (including visa) and, where appropriate, the Identity Card for Foreign Nationals (ICFN) or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). The University is required by law to check, verify and retain copies of this documentation in student files as part of its immigration sponsorship duties. Staff will check this documentation to ensure that students have the right to study in the UK and, specifically, with Edge Hill University. Please note that even if you have provided these documents during your application process, you must still provide them at enrolment. This policy will be strictly adhered to. You will not be able to enrol if you do not provide all the required documentation

Travelling to your Enrolment Session Ormskirk Campus: Resident students are not generally permitted to bring cars on campus and you are therefore advised to travel by public transport if that is convenient. If you need to come to your enrolment session by car, a ‘Temporary Parking Permit’ valid for one day only, is enclosed with your pack. You should display this on your dashboard as you enter the campus main entrance and hand it in to one of our parking attendants. You will be directed to the nearest available space, if any are available. We must emphasise that we are not in a position to guarantee that parking spaces will be available. For advice on car parking for disabled students please contact the Inclusion Team at: inclusiveservices@edgehill.ac.uk.

Manchester Campus: If you are attending an Enrolment Session at the Manchester Campus, there is no on-campus parking and you should travel by public transport. Please visit edgehill.ac.uk/location/armstrong for further details.

Student Finance NHS Bursary If you are studying on a Pre Registration Nursing or BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice course (excluding seconded students) you may be eligible to apply for funding from the NHS in the form of a bursary in addition to funding from the Student Loan Company.

The NHS funding package usually consists of:

-

Full fee payment by the NHS; A non-repayable, non-means tested grant (currently £1,000) A non-repayable income assessed NHS bursary, to cover living expenses; Disabled Students’ Allowance – for disabled students who incur additional costs to participate in the course – available from the NHS;

Also a reduced rate, non-income assessed student loan from the Student Loan Company. The University does not administer or control NHS Bursaries for pre registration students, they are administered by the NHS Grant Unit on 0300 330 1345. Once you have firmly accepted your place at the University, the NHS Student Grants Unit will e-mail you with instructions on how to apply for your bursary on-line. The first instalment of your NHS bursary will normally be within two weeks of your enrolment being completed and will be two months payment in advance. Please ensure that you have sufficient money for at least the first two weeks to cover food, travel and other expenses. Subsequent bursary payments will be paid monthly directly to your nominated bank/building society account. NHS fee funding is paid directly to the University. If you have any queries about your residential status please contact the University Admissions Office admissions@edgehill.ac.uk.

Student maintenance loans are available from the Student Loan Company for full-time undergraduates to help eligible students with the cost of living during their time at University. Funding and application processes vary depending on whether you normally reside in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland:

If you have applied and completed your funding application with Student Finance England/Wales/Northern Ireland/EU or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland you must bring a copy of your ‘University or College Payment Advice Notification’ to enrolment. If you receive this after enrolment you must submit your Notification to Academic Registry, located in the Student Information Centre Ormskirk campus, or into the office at the Manchester campus as soon as possible.

Subject to previous study and funding, all UK and EU students/trainees are eligible for a student loan. You should already have applied for this from the Student Loan Company (SLC) – if you haven’t you need to do so as a matter of urgency.

GETTING STARTED AT EDGE HILL UNIVERSITY

If you have applied for funding, when confirmed, the Student Loan Company will pay your maintenance loan normally in three instalments directly into your bank account. The first payment will be 3-5 working days after you have fully enrolled with the University, or on the date confirmed on your payment schedule, whichever is the later. Payments will not be made if your financial application has not been approved in full.

Important: You must bring a copy of your ‘NHS Notification of Award’ and ‘SLC University or College Payment Advice Notification’ to enrolment. If you receive this after enrolment you must submit your Notification to Academic Registry, located in the Student Information Centre Ormskirk campus, or into the office at the Manchester campus as soon as possible.

Council Tax Exemption Certificates You can request a Council Tax Exemption Certificate (CTC) on-line, through Student Central. The certificate will be emailed to your Edge Hill email account.

This will be valid for the current academic session only.

PLEASE NOTE, Council Tax Exemption Certificates (CTC) will not be available until the first teaching week of term and this will differ depending on the term dates for your programme. A button to request a CTC will appear on Student Central during your first week of term; if the button does not appear and you believe you are eligible for council tax exemption, please contact the Enrolment team via enrolment@edgehill.ac.uk.

Students’ Union The Students’ Union offers a range of advice services as well as arranging activities and events. The University supports your participation and involvement. For further information, see enclosed pack or visit: www.edgehillsu.org.uk

The Venue and University Club ‘The Venue’ is the University Ormskirk on-campus bar. It provides everything you would expect from a student bar; alcoholic and soft drinks, as well as entertainment in the form of themed nights and live bands.

Edge Hill Sport Edge Hill Sport is the university sports service run on behalf of Edge Hill University. Working in close partnership with the Students’ Union and the Academic Sport Department its aim is to deliver a programme of activities in high quality facilities. Road Via the M6 North and South, junction 26, then onto the M58, junction 3, taking the A570 towards Southport and Ormskirk. The campus can also be reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59. Satellite Navigation address: 53.558622,-2.875178. Using our postcode in your sat nav may result in directions to our back entrance, which is only open at certain times. If you wish to use the postcode it is L39 4QP, but please check that the route brings you via St Helens Road.

The University operates the ‘Edge Link’ bus service between the campus and Ormskirk bus station (a pathway from the bus station leads directly to the train station) every 15 minutes throughout the day, 8.05 am to 20.45 pm Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays and 8.05 am to 17.45 pm Saturday. The service is free on production of your ‘Unicard’ for each journey.

Car Parking on campus - Ormskirk The University recognises the need to reduce pollution and congestion by minimising the reliance on cars and promoting the benefits of sustainable travel.

Resident students are not permitted to bring cars on campus unless this is necessary during placement activities and commuting students are advised to use public transport wherever possible. If you do need to use your car, you must display a valid permit to park. Information on how to apply for a permit will be available at your enrolment session. You can get further information on public transport discounts and timetables, cycling and car sharing by visiting edgehill.ac.uk/travel. For journey planning try transportdirect.info.

Please note that car parking spaces are extremely limited and, during the early weeks of term, there can be long queues. You may be required to find a safe and legal place to park off-campus if there are no spaces available.
