Woyzeck

A brand new adaptation based on the play by Georg Buchner Tickets £10 / £8 concessions / £5 Edge Hill University students and school parties of 10 or more

Set amidst the backdrop of WW1, Woyzeck depicts a lowly soldier plagued by visions of the apocalypse, and plunged into homicidal lunacy by the world around him. The agonising effects of war trauma and the devastation of the downtrodden man still resonate 200 years after the play was written. As we approach the centenary of WW1, this production takes the audience into a world that is disturbingly atmospheric, darkly comic and heartbreakingly poignant.

Cert: U Running time: 102 mins

Cert: 15 Running time: 90mins

Arthur is the grumpy husband of Marion who is terminally ill yet continues to participate with enthusiasm at her local seniors' choir. As Marion’s health deteriorates, Arthur is keen to please his dying wife and even agrees to take her place in the choir. Arthur's experience in this new social environment will take him on a journey of self-discovery and thaw his bitterness.

Epic tells the story of an on-going battle, deep in the forest, between the forces of good, who keep the natural world alive, and the forces of evil who wish to destroy it. When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world... and ours.

When it appears as though the end is in sight, the pilots, flight crew, and passengers of a plane heading to Mexico City look to forget the anguish of the moment and face the greatest danger, which we carry within ourselves.

Robyn Woolston, a Liverpool Art Prize winner, will create a temporary artwork that will explore the interior architecture and the exterior landscape of the University grounds. Robyn is an artist and filmmaker who works in a site responsive way, often using waste materials to question environmental concerns and human behaviours. Her previous materials have included 132,000 pieces of plastic cutlery, an ash tree and 45,000 plastic bags. For Edge Hill University she has embarked upon a series of workshops to garner greater insights into the history of the institution and its architectural fabric. Image: Field of Dreams, 2011

Dying Swans and Dragged Up Dames A photographic exhibition of the ageing dancer Mark Edward and Helen Newall FREE

Dying Swans is an irreverent and fun series of 20 black and white and colour photographic images parodying performance photography of iconic male and female dancers, played by Mark Edward and photographed and Photoshopped by Helen Newall. The images are accompanied by visually presented information detailing the background to the images. These are tragi-comedy images. The tragedy lies in knowing that the dancers we watch will eventually become too past it to dance, the comedy from the bombastic contrast between athletic dance bodies and aged, overweight ones attempting and achieving (thank you Photoshop!) the same balletic feats. This exhibition fondly foregrounds cultural obsessions with youth and Photoshop, and the erasure of age in both live performance – ballet, drag or otherwise – and the digital dark room, where ability and beauty can be airbrushed and ‘improved’. These are images of old drag ballet queens, flamboyant in the performance of being clapped out and over the hill but still dancing. Highlights include: Angina Pavlova’s Dying Swan; the gravity defying leaps of Rudolf Neuroyev; and Marko Fonteyn’s The Fired Bird.

This project has been funded by Edge Hill University.

The Unforgotten Coat Photography exhibition Carl Hunter and Clare Heney FREE

The Unforgotten Coat is an award-winning children's book created by Frank Cottrell Boyce, Carl Hunter and Clare Heney. "Two refugee brothers from Mongolia are determined to fit in with their Liverpool schoolmates, but bring so much of Mongolia to Bootle that their new friend and guide, Julie, is hard-pressed to know truth from fantasy as she recollects a wonderful friendship." The exhibition features the 'stunning and atmospheric' photography from the book, transforming Liverpool into a version of Mongolia through the medium of Polaroids. We hope to organise a Q&A with author Frank Cottrell Boyce – check our website for details.

The Big Society Photography exhibition Si Barber FREE

A provocative and unflinching view of contemporary Britain, The Big Society is documentary photographer Si Barber’s riposte to the Conservative government’s controversial flagship policy of the same name that aimed to ‘take power away from politicians and give it to people’. As the government seems to have quietly retired – or at least moved away from overtly using – the term, Si’s investigation has continued, resulting in an extensive (and ongoing) account of a Britain still struggling to come to terms with the effects of the financial crisis. At once confrontational, compassionate, witty and warm, Si’s photographs not only capture the everyday realities of the ravages of economic decline, but also depict a very British resilience in the face of struggle and hardship.

Here, again Photography exhibition Angelina Ayers, Andrew Conroy and Thomas Mann FREE

Text and image come together in this collaboration between Angelina Ayers, Andrew Conroy and Thomas Mann. Featuring five poems that were written in response to a series of black and white minimalist photographs, Here, again plays with the relationship between visual art and text, how one might inform the other. The photographs, text and their presentation combine to create a sequence of fragments, a partial narrative glimpsed from the corner of the eye.
