Welcome from the Dean The Faculty of Health and Social Care offers a highly supportive learning environment which allows you to succeed with your personal and professional development. Our lecturers and tutors treat each student as an individual and are always on hand to offer their knowledge and expertise whenever they are needed. All our programmes are designed to be responsive to the needs of those wanting to work in a health and social care setting. We also continually plan and introduce new programmes that respond to the Government agendas and initiatives. The Faculty has excellent relationships with NHS Hospital and Community Trusts meaning we can offer work-based learning opportunities across a variety of care contexts, with placements at over 600 locations in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire. The overall experience of the Edge Hill University NHS Dip HE Nursing Students was considered the best in the country in the 2010 National Student Survey (NSS). Around 50% of our students are out in the workplace at any one time, typically spending more than 2,000 hours in real life healthcare settings during their degree. There are a number of career paths open to our health and social care graduates including: • • • • • • • • • •

Introduction As the fastest growing University in the country we strive to provide our students with the best support and facilities available. We hope you enjoy your time with us and that you go on to have a challenging and satisfying career. This booklet has been designed for students/trainees based at the Ormskirk campus starting in September 2011, students starting their studies later in the year will be notified separately of the date and time.
Programme Induction For students starting their Programme in September your Faculty will organise your ‘Freshers’ Week’ Programme, which is a series of activities to welcome you to the University and to introduce you to your academic life. There will also be an opportunity to meet with your Tutors and to find out about the full range of support services and facilities available to you. It is important that you participate in all ‘Freshers’ Week’ or ‘Induction Activities’ for students starting later in the academic year.
Teaching Timetable Full time students/trainees can normally expect to be in the University Monday to Friday. Sessions can be scheduled from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm. You will receive full information outlining the exact details of your taught sessions during Freshers' week/Induction. Part Time students/trainees should contact their Programme Leader for advice.

Admissions Outstanding Offer Conditions If you have outstanding conditions to meet, please provide evidence to Admissions as soon as possible in order for your place to be confirmed. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have met all the necessary conditions of your offer and you will not be able to complete enrolment until any outstanding conditions have been satisfied. Important: you must attend all Freshers’ Week activities in week one even if you are not able to enrol at your scheduled time. Proof of Qualifications If you have been asked for verification of your qualifications, please send copies of your certificates to Admissions.
Some Programmes in the Faculty have Medical and/or Criminal Records Bureau clearance requirements. If these are listed as outstanding conditions of your offer please read on. Medical Clearance You cannot enrol without medical clearance. If you have not already done so, please send your completed declaration of health questionnaire to Admissions. This can be a lengthy process as your form has to be sent to Occupational Health for clearance so you should do this as soon as possible. Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) You will not be able to enrol without CRB clearance. If you have not already done so, please send your completed CRB application form to Admissions as soon as possible. If you have already received your CRB Enhanced Disclosure Certificate, please keep it in a safe place and do not lose it. In the event that clearance is not through before the start date of your first placement, we will discuss this with you and try to find a suitable solution. Enrolment To become a member of Edge Hill University and to activate your IT/library account, you must complete the University Enrolment process, this will:

Ensure that your records are correct on the University Student Record System Allow you to confirm that you agree to abide by the University Rules and Regulations Confirm your attendance which will release your student loan (Home students only) Provide you with your ‘Unicard’ which is your University ID card Issue your University account to access a range of resources and services to support you with your studies, including book loans, access to electronic resources both on and off campus, access to student PCs and an Edge Hill University student e-mail account
The Enrolment Sessions are timetabled into slots, either allocated in alphabetical order by surname or by Programme. You are required to enrol at a specified time slot and you may arrive at anytime within your given slot. For undergraduate students please see the Sessions Charts for details, other trainees should refer to their programme information for guidance. You only need to attend one Enrolment Session, not both, for example if you are living in University Halls of Residence you will attend Session 2 on Welcome Sunday 18 September, you do not need to attend Session 1 on 15/16 September.
The enrolment process should take no longer than one hour to complete, you must bring with you ONE form of Identification (ID) from the following list:

You must attend your scheduled Enrolment Session. Failure to attend will mean that you will be subject to the £50 late Enrolment Fee, plus there will be a significant delay in payment of your loan. Important: Due to changes in UK legislation students who do not hold a UK Passport must present their Passport or UKBA issued BRP card as proof of ID and original copies of their valid visa. Travelling to your Enrolment Session If you are attending Enrolment Sessions 1 or 3 (Ormskirk Campus) you are advised, where possible to travel to the University by Public Transport. Parking is EXTREMELY LIMITED on campus and you cannot be guaranteed a car parking space. It is important that you plan your journey in advance, travel information is available from: edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel/journeyplanning.
A ‘Temporary Parking Permit’ valid for one day only, to cover your Enrolment Session is enclosed with your pack. You must display it on your dashboard as you enter the campus main entrance and hand it in to one of our parking attendants. You will be directed to the nearest available space, if any are available. We must emphasise that POSSESSION OF THE CAR PARKING PERMIT DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A CAR PARKING SPACE and we are not in a position to guarantee that parking spaces will be available. Moving into University Halls of Residence If you will be staying in University Halls of Residence you should arrive on Welcome Sunday 18th September 2011. You should drive onto campus via the entrance on St Helens Road where you will be directed to a car park at the rear of the campus. You are advised to arrive no more than 1 hour in advance of your allocated enrolment time.
Before you are issued with your accommodation keys you are required to:-

Complete the University Enrolment process Make arrangements to pay your hall fees in full or by instalments before your arrival on Welcome Sunday - you can do this online at edgehill.ac.uk/payments. (Please check our website for information about when this link will be available).
Please note: if you have set up a plan to pay by instalments, you will only need to pay your £150 damage deposit prior to arrival.
Once you have enrolled and collected your accommodation keys you can return to your vehicle to be directed to the drop off zone closest to your residence. A limited supply of trolleys will be available to assist you in moving your belongings into your accommodation. You will then be required to move your vehicle out of the drop off zone to one of the car parks (on the edge of the campus) to allow other students to access the drop off zone. You may be required to walk some distance from the drop off zone to the halls of residence. Belongings should therefore be transported to University in suitable containers e.g. crates and suitcases on wheels. Car Parking Students living in University Halls of Residence are NOT permitted to keep a car on campus. However, students who are required to attend placement as part of their studies may apply for a temporary permit for the duration of their placement. In such circumstances these students should contact their Programme Leader and ask them to email their name and residence, together with their Programme details and placements dates, to the FM Helpdesk as authorisation. Tuition Fees and Funding Tuition fees are paid by the Department of Health for all eligible students studying on the following Programmes: Pre-Registration Nursing, Pre-Registration Midwifery, BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice, Dip HE Paramedic Practice, BSc (Hons) Children's Nursing and Social Work, and BSc (Hons) Learning Disabilities Nursing and Social Work Programmes. Full Time UK and EU students are liable for £3375 Tuition Fees for 2011/12 for BA (Hons) Health and Social Wellbeing, BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Health, BA (Hons) Social Work and all Foundation Programmes. For guidance on tuition fees and funding for part time student please contact please contact E: tuitionfees@edgehill.ac.uk Student Loan Payments for Maintenance Grants/Loans If you have already applied you must bring in a copy of your ‘University or College Payment Advice’ and all relevant documentation to your Enrolment Session. If you have not received your financial assessment by the time you come to enrol, you should take it to Academic Registry in the Student Information Centre as soon as possible. You may be eligible to take out a Tuition Fee Loan up to nine months into your programme, please contact Student Finance for further details. For eligible students/trainees Student Finance will pay your Student Loan and Maintenance Grant directly into your Bank Account 3 – 5 working days after you have fully enrolled with the University irrespective of the date indicated on your payment schedule. Payment will not be made if Student Finance have not completed your financial assessment. If you need advice about applying for funding please contact the Student Financial Advice Team in Student Services E: financialadviceteam@edgehill.ac.uk Self funded students If you are paying your own Tuition Fees you must provide a letter at your Enrolment Session to confirm that you take full responsibility for payment of all Tuition Fees related to your Programme, it should state that you will pay them at Enrolment or the times agreed with the University Finance Office. If you have not applied for a Tuition Fee Loan, or are not eligible for funding you will be invoiced and liable for payment of the full Tuition Fee by December 2011. Payment Arrangements Tuition Fees must be either paid in full at the start of the academic year or by recurring card payment in three instalments. Please contact the tuition fees team for further information related to payments on 01695 584792 or 584622 prior to the start of your programme. International Students Guidance on tuition fees and funding for International students can be obtained from the Centre for International Education. Edge Hill Bursaries If you pay the full £3375, you qualify for the full Maintenance Grant Loan and have indicated that you have consented to share your information, you may receive a £500 Edge Hill Bursary. This will be paid to you automatically in June 2012.

Bursary Payments for NHS Programmes Paramedic Practice Students The University is responsible for the administration and payment of Paramedic Practice Bursaries. If you have not received the application form then please call T: 01695 584225. Pre Registration Nursing, Midwifery Students and ODP Students All Pre-Registration Nursing and Midwifery students and Operating Department Practice Students (except those attending on a seconded basis) are eligible to apply for a bursary, this will be means tested for students at degree level. Once you have written to firmly accept your place at Edge Hill University, the NHS Student Grants Unit will automatically send you a letter with instructions on downloading the bursary application form. The form can also be downloaded at : www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk. You must complete the Funding Application Form regardless of whether or not there is any entitlement to bursary payment, otherwise Tuition Fees will not be paid by the NHS. The University does not administer or control bursary payment for Pre-Registration Students, all queries should be directed to the Student Grants Unit on 0845 3586655. The first instalment of your bursary will normally be paid two months in advance and normally within two weeks of your enrolment on the Programme, provided that you have fully enrolled with the University. Please ensure that you have sufficient money for at least the first two weeks to cover food, travel and other expenses. Subsequent bursary payments will be paid directly to your nominated bank/building society account. Pre Registration Nursing and Midwifery and other Degree level students, including seconded students, may also be entitled to a Student Loan and enquiries relating to this should be direct to www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk or 0845 6077577. Bursary for BA (Hons) Social Work Students A non-means tested NHS funded bursary of ÂŁ4,575 pa is available to students registered on the BA (Hons) Social Work programme, this can be used to pay for tuition fees and other expenses. Travel With more students than ever joining the University, parking on campus is EXTREMELY LIMITED. It is important that you plan your journey in advance and where possible use PUBLIC TRANSPORT. The University operates the ‘Edge Hill Link’ bus service between the campus and Ormskirk bus station every 15 minutes (a pathway from the bus station leads directly to the train station) throughout the day, 8.00 am to 8.45 pm Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays and 8.00 am to 5.45 pm Saturday. The service is free on production of your ‘Unicard’. Travel to the University (Ormskirk Campus): Rail

Using our postcode in your sat nav may result in directions to our back entrance which is only open at certain times. If you wish to use the postcode it is L39 4QP but please check that the route brings you via St Helens Road.

Car Parking Ormskirk Campus YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TRAVEL TO UNIVERSITY BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Car Parking is extremely limited on campus. If you have explored all options and must travel by car you should be aware that:

The University cannot guarantee you a parking space, even if you have a Car Parking Permit During Freshers’ Week and in Term Time you can expect to find long queues of traffic from 8.00 am onwards and severe delays entering campus When the car park is full you will be asked to find safe alternative parking off campus Parking in Ormskirk town centre is limited, it is mainly pay and display, please see www.westlancsdc.gov.uk and click on the link for parking in Ormskirk, for alternative parking options The University is in a residential area and if you do not park legally and sensibly your car may be towed away by the police
Car Parking Permits The University operates a Car Parking Permit system and you will NOT be allowed to park on campus if you do not have a valid Permit. Temporary arrangements have been made to cover your Enrolment Session, please see the Enrolment Section of this booklet for details. You will be advised about the process for you to apply for a permanent Car Parking Permit at your Enrolment Session. Advice and Services Council Tax Certificates The local council will normally need to see an Exemption Certificate confirming your student status and programme of study. The University has entered into an agreement with various Local Councils whereby it will not be necessary for students to supply their landlords with individual council tax certificates. Students will not normally be issued with individual Council Tax Exemption certificates.
