A Translation of Shadows
Have you ever fallen in love with someone in a film? In Japan, in the era of the silent movie, audiences benefited from a live narrator, the Benshi, who explained what was happening on the screen. The Benshi were the stars of the show, until 'the talkies' killed them off, never to be seen again...

Vladimir and Estragon meet as dusk approaches. Estragon tries to remove his boot. Vladimir examines his hat. A conversation begins, a joke is interrupted. A carrot is eaten. The two men quarrel, then embrace. Unannounced, two eccentric travellers arrive. Seemingly master and servant, one stands weighed down at the end of a long rope, the other carries a whip. So begins Samuel Beckett’s 60-year-old masterpiece Waiting for Godot, a ground-breaking, anarchic meditation on the meaning of life and death. Part allegory, part burlesque, Beckett’s unique, timeless play moves seamlessly between absurdist comic sketch and captivating philosophical drama.

Epic
Tickets £10 / £6 / £3.50 Edge Hill University students. Buy two or more shows at the same time and get £1 off each.
Epic has evolved to mean many things: at its simplest it means telling a story about a hero. But we also expect breadth, scope and a giant canvas; or we may recall Brecht’s demand for rational and critical reflection rather than mere emotional identification. Here is a season of work examining the possibilities of the Epic in the 21st Century. Tuesday & Wednesday 15th & 16th December 7.30pm
13 Objects By Howard Barker
In a linked series of short plays Barker movingly explores the investment we make in things. This is a history of humanity in thirteen objects. “Whether they are relics of the dead, symbols of sacrifice or pathetic items imbued with love, they carry immense significance and serve as a pretext by which the world is judged. We are enslaved by our hopes.” Howard Barker. Suitable for 18 years and above.

Urinetown: The Musical Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann. Book and lyrics by Greg Kotis
In a world where all toilets are controlled by a single malevolent corporation and it costs you an arm and a leg to spend a penny - this play for our times will have you wetting yourself. Winner of three Tony Awards, this 21st century Epic is a mischievous love letter to Brecht and his musical collaborators. While playing fast and loose with the conventions of musical theatre, Urinetown still makes you think as it depicts a world wracked by ecological disaster and caught in the throes of corporate greed.

Simon Godwin (Man and Superman) directs George Farquhar’s wild comedy of love and cash. The Beaux: Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in giddy London. Shamed and debt-ridden, they flee to provincial Lichfield. Their Stratagem: to marry for money. Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and servant, they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles. But their greatest obstacle is love. When the Beaux meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs Sullen they are most at risk, for in love they might be truly discovered.

Retelling the story of the biggest aerial conflict of the Second World War, this two and a half hour cinema experience comes live from Biggin Hill in south-east London, the most famous of Britain’s fighter stations. BBC Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary, Jeremy Vine and Louise Minchin will be joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra and musicians from across the armed forces as they share rare and untold stories from the Battle. Unseen archive footage from the conflict, modern day RAF personnel, guest singers and a cast of actors will bring those stories to life as we remember the men and women who lost their lives 75 years ago.
National Theatre Live’s 2013 broadcast of the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus returns to cinemas. Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, Coriolanus features an Evening Standard Awardwinning performance from Tom Hiddleston. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Frankenstein at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, National Theatre Live will broadcast this eagerly awaited production live to cinemas. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.
Henry IV is dead and Hal is King. With England in a state of unrest, he must leave his rebellious youth behind, striving to gain the respect of his nobility and people. Laying claim to parts of France and following an insult from the French Dauphin, Henry gathers his troops and prepares for a war that he hopes will unite his country. Following his performance as Hal in Henry IV Parts I & II Alex Hassell returns as Henry V. Henry V will be broadcast Live from Stratford-uponAvon by the Royal Shakespeare Company in the same week as the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt.

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test, charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan's latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, and more deceptive, than the two men could have imagined.
In 1914, Vera Brittain (Alicia Vikander) overcomes the restraints on women of the time to become a student at Somerville College, Oxford. When World War I breaks out, her brother Edward (Taron Egerton), her fiancĂŠ Roland Leighton (Kit Harington), and their friends Victor (Colin Morgan), and Geoffrey (Jonathan Bailey), are sent to serve at the front lines. Brittain follows their sacrifice, leaving college to join the Voluntary Aid Detachment as a nurse tending the wounded and dying in London, Malta and France.
Fast & Furious 7 is the seventh instalment in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Dark Horse
Set Fire to the Stars
Dir: Louise Osmond, 2015
Dir: Andy Goddard, 2014
Cert: PG Running time: 84 mins
Cert: 15 Running time: 97 mins
The incredible true story of Dream Alliance. An inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men's club who decide to take on the elite sport of kings and breed themselves a racehorse. Dark Horse is a goodhumoured, no-frills story of a Welsh working-class community that clubbed together to invest in a thoroughbred, and ended up with the winner of the Welsh Grand National. The tale is also very political, revealing the snobbery directed not just at the owners but at the horse itself.
Dylan Thomas battles his demons in 1950s New York. Celebrating Dylan Thomas' centenary, this intriguing semi-biographical drama, beautifully shot in black-andwhite, focusses on a week in the life of the great poet as he prepares for a series of performed readings in the US. Featuring stellar performances from co-writer Celyn Jones as Thomas and Elijah Wood as John Malcolm Brinnin.
Dir: Jermaine Clements & Taika Waititi, 2014 Cert: 15 Running time: 86 mins
The adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that's not always hospitable to the undead. Clement and Waititi, co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us, the details of their daily (make that nightly) routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet.
Wirral based actor and screenwriter Celyn Jones will visit Short Cuts Cinema to talk about his highly regarded film. The audience will have the chance to ask him questions about the script and his stunning performance.

The remarkable true story of one woman's journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt's famous painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behaviour, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.
Dir: Thomas Vinterburg, 2015 Cert: 12A Running time: 119 mins
Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far From the Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love, as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
