MA Making Performance Department of Performing Arts

Postgraduate Study in Performing Arts

Edge Hill University Performing Arts department offers the opportunity to study for MA or MRes awards which can be taken full-time, part-time or as professional development. Students can also undertake postgraduate research in the department with a view to attaining MPhil or PhD awards.

The MA Making Performance is an exciting opportunity to discuss, explore, and create performance in high standard professional facilities. The course examines practice-asresearch, development of creative projects, and the creation of a significant or full-scale production or performance-based project combined with critical reflection on the processes, aesthetics and contexts of performance.

The programme can be studied part-time and flexibly and students can choose to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma rather than a full MA if they wish. For full details visit edgehill.ac.uk/courses/making-performance

“I had the space to write my own piece, work with a cast, and then see it performed for a student audience. It gave me a massive buzz to see their reactions.”

“Edge Hill’s Performing Arts department is my spiritual home, so it made sense to study my MA here. I have always wanted to write my own plays and to have the freedom to explore subjects that interest me, and this course offered that. Financial support through the Postgraduate Support Scheme also helped my decision.

“I’m very passionate about writing drama so most enjoyed the performance project module. I had the space to write my own piece, work with a cast, and then see it performed for a student audience. It gave me a massive buzz to see their reactions. There really is nothing like seeing your piece get such a good reception, it’s one of the best feelings I’ve had. That play is now being produced by ‘Naughty Corner Productions’, the University’s resident theatre company. It will be performed at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool, as well as at the Edinburgh fringe, and will then hopefully tour with a professional cast.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of support I got from my tutors. The academic side of the course was difficult for me as it was a definite step-up from an undergraduate degree. There were days when I felt that my research was going badly, but tutors’ doors were always open and I was welcome to go and have a chat. As well as this the facilities here are second to none, probably some of the best in the country.

“The course has definitely encouraged me to pursue my own writing. It has also given me the confidence to do a writing course at the Everyman Theatre and to take part in a monologue night which was a really good experience. It has also opened doors to professional writing, directing and acting opportunities including a film and a play next year. The course is very challenging and a lot of work, but at the same time it is stimulating and has helped me develop both as a professional and a person.”

“I would recommend any practitioner of the Arts to come to Edge Hill University and experience this course which is both challenging and inspiring.”

“I work as a teacher at Formby High School where I teach Dance A-Level, GCSE and BTEC Performing Arts and lead the Gold Arts Award Programme. I also work as a community representative leading dance workshops for Sefton primary schools.

“I have a dance company, Eleven, which is made up of sixth form students from Formby High School. We’ve performed at Northern Ballet, Northern Contemporary Dance Leeds and The Lowry in Manchester, and have created work which was included in the National Youth Dance platform. We have also recently worked with Edge Hill’s all male dance troupe Edge FWD, and their female counterpart, 3rd Edge.

“I loved my time at Edge Hill and I feel like the course really helped me learn a combination of skills which I use every day. The knowledge I gained has also helped me get involved with a wide range of community projects.

“During my MA in Making Performance at Edge Hill, I worked alongside talented professionals who really helped me during the creation of my critical piece of dance theatre. The course developed my skills in technical theatre, choreography and direction, and furthered my understanding of theatre practice as I was encouraged to use imagination and exploration. “To anyone wanting to pursue work in dance and performance my advice is to work hard, be flexible and always reliable and have confidence in your creativity.”
