A welcome from the NQT Programme Team Welcome to the second of this year’s NQT Conferences provided by the Faculty of Education at Edge Hill University. We are delighted that you have seen the value of today’s conference and taken the time to meet up with old friends, University tutors and to take part in a wide range of workshops. This year, the conference has been extended to include workshops for graduates from post compulsory education and training. A special welcome to any graduates from such programmes. We are excited about hosting, for the first time, a ‘TeachMeet’ session and we welcome and thank colleagues who have volunteered to share their outstanding practice. Today’s programme is the result of work with teachers who have recently been successful in completing their NQT year. They have helped shape the programme based on their experiences. We are delighted that they too are here today and extend a warm welcome.

Whilst we look forward to today’s conference we are already planning the next. This will be on Saturday 17th May. There will be an opportunity at the end of today for you to tell us what topics you would like covered at that conference.

A special thank you to Paul Spencer and Russell Sugden who are moving into other roles at the University and whom have led these conferences since their inception in November 2012.

The HE Landscape The Higher Education landscape has changed at an unprecedented rate since the Coalition Government came to power in 2010. The changes that have been implemented will, inevitably, have a significant impact on those who work in the Education sector as well as those who are considering applying to university. But what is fact and what is hearsay?

This brief session will give an overview of those changes, what you need to know as an education specialist and how Edge Hill University can help.

Presenter: Liam is Head of Student Recruitment at Edge Hill University based in Ormskirk in the Northwest of England where he has worked since January 2007. His responsibilities include Outreach and Education Liaison, Open Events, Course Enquiries and Advice and Guidance Services, Applicant Communications, Postgraduate Recruitment and Workforce Development activities. Liam is also the former UK Chair of Higher Education Liaison Officers Association, finishing his term of office in January 2014. Founded in 1990, HELOA's aims are to 'promote entry to all sectors of Higher Education' and to 'have concern for the nature and quality of information and counselling given in the United Kingdom either directly, or indirectly to all potential students'. With over 1000 members in nine groups across the UK, HELOA aims to be one of the foremost, professional, member-led IAG Associations in the sector, collaborating with other Associations and Agencies to make a significant contribution to the debate about Higher Education in the UK

TeachMeet A TeachMeet is a group of teachers and educators that have got together to share ideas. These are ideas that they have used in the classroom and that they want to share with a wider audience. You can present using any tool you wish. This might be PowerPoint速 , Prezi, bits of paper or in the case of one, a guitar. The main thing is the sharing of ideas.

Generally TeachMeets follow some simple rules and the main one is that presentations are short, usually 2 or 5 minutes in length. This means that you can get lots of people sharing lots of ideas in one event. The presentations are also about ideas rather than products.

TeachMeets happen across the country (and the world) and they started as small meetings or over dinner. They now run mainly as either an event at a conference or as an event in their own right. The NQT Conference brings TeachMeet to Edge Hill University for the first time.

In this behaviour management workshop, Lisa Miller will respond to specific examples from delegates and provide tailored guidance on how to manage individuals and classes across all age ranges who exhibit challenging behaviour.

Cooperative learning with Kagan Emma Rollins Teacher to Teacher (UK) Room E24

Emma is a teacher with 11 years experience covering all ages and abilities in secondary education. Emma is an outstanding teacher, and has been an Advanced Skills Teacher in Learning and Teaching for the last 5 years. She is a Certified National Kagan Trainer working with schools throughout the UK. In this workshop you will learn ways to release the power of Kagan Structures in your own classrooms at any key stage. You will find that when you use structures students are kinder to each other and enjoy class and academic content more. Sarah is a champion in the use of technologies to enhance pupil learning and to get the most from precious teacher time. In this workshop she will demonstrate technologies that will save time, enhance teaching and learning and engage learners, a whistle stop tour of technologies that are easy to embed into the classroom for all age ranges.

This workshop will begin by looking at the pathways on to the MA Education programme based upon entry qualifications. Tony will then consider exemplar assignments for the gateway modules on to the MA programme.

Alison is an experienced teacher of early years children who will provide a workshop with helpful handy hints, full of practical fun activities such as; 'Busy Bee,' 'Funky Fingers', ‘Minute making play dough,’ ‘Number Fun’ and 'Puff Painting’, which are guaranteed to excite and engage early years’ children.

Are your children confident in all five strands of place value? Are they secure, confident and ready to calculate? Are you sure? The workshop will support a wide range of different ability and aged children and help them specifically develop understanding of place value for any number range. The workshop will help all primary teachers to further their understanding of how ‘models and images’ can support mathematical understanding and learning. There will be an opportunity to explore a wealth of ideas, resources and activities that can be used straight away in the classroom. Links will be made to the 2014 National Curriculum highlighting key messages and action to complete in preparation for implementation.

Inclusive PE at KS2 Jonathan White Clare Mount Sports College, Wirral Room New Gym (Sporting Edge)

Jonathan is a teacher of PE at Clare Mount Sports College which caters for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and additional needs including autism. Judged â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Outstandingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by Ofsted in 2010, in this activity based workshop, Jon will draw on this experience to provide examples on how to include all learners at KS2 in physical education. There will be a focus on The Inclusion Spectrum and the use of STEP as a planning and differentiation tool. There will be many examples given from the his current practice in a cluster of special and mainstream schools to support NQTs in gaining confidence that they can plan, prepare and assess using an Inclusive PE model. Developing Literacy across the Primary curriculum Yvonne Shone Farnborough Road Junior School, Southport Room E7

The development of literacy skills remains central to a child's life chances and is a focus of the new primary curriculum. In this workshop Yvonne will draw on her experience and provide practical examples of how she develops skills in reading, spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting in a subject context.

Working with TAs in the Primary School Mat Budd Poulton Lancelyn Primary School, Wirral Hollie Fitzgibbon Liversedge, West Yorkshire Room E6 Teaching Assistants can make a significant contribution to a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progress when working in harmony with the classroom teacher. Mat and Hollie will describe the strategies he adopts to lead and manage the Teaching Assistant to achieve a partnership in the classroom which is working towards achieving the learning outcomes for each child.

Secondary and PCET workshops Marking Matters Andrew Oliver Curriculum Director of Expressive Arts, Our Ladyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s , Blackley Room E19

In this workshop, Andrew will be introducing strategies that will help you to improve student engagement with their own progress, through effective marking. Andrewwill also suggest strategies to speed up marking and show ways to structure peer and selfevaluation so that it is useful and helps pupils to improve their own work and attainment. This session will cover all subjects as ideas will be predominantly generic.

The new Key Stage 3 Programme of Study for English will be taught in all maintained secondary schools from September 2014. This workshop will provide an overview of the new KS3 English POS and the practical steps English teachers should take to prepare for this new Curriculum.

Preparing for New NC in Secondary Science Tony Houghton Head of Science, Tarleton Academy Sally Warnes, Senior Lecturer, Edge Hill University Room BIO 009 (Haeckel Laboratory ground floor Biosciences) This workshop will support science teachers in implementing the new National Curriculum. It will identify the key issues arising from the new Curriculum and consider how to audit and adapt existing schemes of learning to accommodate the changes.

The new Key Stage 3 Programme of Study for Mathematics will be taught in all maintained secondary schools from September 2014. This workshop will provide an overview of the new KS3 Mathematics POS and the practical steps Maths teachers should take to prepare for this new Curriculum.

QTLS in the NQT Year & the IfL Kathryn Langford Institute for Learning Room E23

In this workshop Kathryn will look at the benefits and the process to gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). She will outline the many professional development opportunities provided by the IfL for teachers in the post compulsory sector.

Raising of the participation age – implications for schools and colleges Robert Kirkham Senior Teacher Support Manager, AQA Room E22

Students who left Year 11 in summer 2013 are required to continue with education or training until at least the end of the academic year in which they turn 17. Pupils starting year 11 or below in September 2013 will need to continue until at least their 18th birthday. This will have major implications for schools and colleges. In this workshop, Robert will look at the timeline and implications for students and teachers. He will describe the alternatives to ‘A’ levels for post 16 students and the planned changes to GCSE and A levels. He will finally describe how AQA can support teachers with the raising of the participation age.

The network provides an exciting, innovative and comprehensive programme of high-quality CPD that covers primary, secondary, post-16 and technicians.
