Your First Week Starting your PGCE is an exciting new stage in your life. First Week is all about settling in to your academic and social environment, meeting your tutors, making friends and generally finding your way around. As well as providing an introduction to your course, there will be opportunities to find out how to make best use of the Library and IT systems, and the full range of student support services available to you. It will help to orientate you in your new academic surrounding and enable you to make a confident start to the PGCE with QTS Programme. The most important thing about First Week is that you attend all your course based sessions and participate fully.
First Week runs on the following dates, depending on your programme: Early Years: Monday 7 September 2015
Primary: Monday 7 September 2015
Secondary: Monday 7 September 2015
Further Education and Training: Monday 14 September 2015
Please visit edgehill.ac.uk/gettingstarted/pgce, and click on ‘Course preparation and First Week timetable’ to view and download your First Week timetable. The PGCE programme will be challenging, innovative, rigorous and enjoyable. The programme requires a great deal of commitment from you, but it is designed to help you develop the range of professional knowledge, reflective understanding and skills to become the best teacher possible.
If you intend to get help with paying your tuition fees and living expenses for your studies, now is the time to make sure that all loans and grants are in place. This will ensure that you receive your funding on time and your transition to University life runs smoothly.
Applying for student finance If you have not yet applied for help with financing your studies, you should apply immediately at www.gov.uk/student-finance. As the process can take some time it is important that you do not delay with making your application. Evidence of your application/assessment will be required when you enrol onto your course.
Assessment of Funding You must ensure you return your declaration form to Student Finance (this is to confirm you agree to the terms and conditions of the loan). Without this form Student Finance are unable to complete final checks and approve your application, which will lead to a delay in any funding being paid to you when you start your course. Once Student Finance have completed your assessment they will send you paperwork showing your entitlement to funding. You can also check on the progress of your application online and see a copy of your assessment once it is available.
Please ensure that all of your details are correct, including:
• • •
The university you will be studying at The course you will be studying The tuition fee for your course.
If any of the above details are incorrect on your Student Finance paperwork please contact TuitionFees@edgehill.ac.uk.
i If you are self-funding your studies, please contact the Fees, Scholarships and Bursaries Team by emailing TuitionFees@edgehill.ac.uk prior to enrolment.

Preparing your finances
When will I receive my funding? After you have completed stage two of enrolment, your first payment will be released. It can take up to five working days for payment to arrive in your account, or longer, if you applied for funding late. But remember, this will only be paid if your declaration form has been signed and returned to Student Finance and they have approved your application by completing all verification checks. Please ensure that you bring your University/College Payment advice (contained in the pack you receive from Student Finance) with you when you enrol. This contains your Student Support Number, which the University needs to identify you with the Student Loans Company and trigger your first payment. If you only recently made an application to Student Finance for funding please bring a copy of the summary page which shows that you have applied for a tuition fee loan.

Campus Life Sustainable Travel Edge Hill University encourages staff, students and visitors to travel here by sustainable means wherever possible and has developed a Travel Plan to include various sustainable travel initiatives.
The University provides a free shuttle bus to link the campus to Ormskirk town centre, where other public transport options are available. For further information please visit edgehill.ac.uk/travel.
Parking Permits Car parking at Edge Hill University is limited and cannot always accommodate all vehicles during peak periods. We therefore recommend, wherever possible, that students use public transport.
Students coming to study at Edge Hill for the first time will need to enrol and receive a student number before a parking permit application can be made. Students who are living in halls of residence are not eligible to park on campus. There are some exceptions for students on placement. The issuing of parking permits is based on clear eligibility criteria, however the provision of a permit does not guarantee a parking space due to the limited capacity on campus. Even if you do have a permit, we suggest you build in sufficient time to park off campus when necessary.
Please visit edgehill.ac.uk/gettingstarted/pgce, click on ‘Student Support’ and then on the ‘Parking permits’ tab to find out more about parking on-campus and details of alternative parking provision close to the University.
Catering Whether it’s a quick coffee and a catch up or lunch between lectures, you are sure to find just what your taste buds are looking for from our wide selection of on-site coffee bars, cafes, and restaurant.
All dining outlets at Edge Hill University have social spaces in which to eat and study as well as free wireless internet access.
Retail There is an onsite McColls convenience store and the University Shop, both of which sell food, drink, and stationery.
In addition, the University is located close to Ormskirk town centre where you will find other shops and amenities.
Student Services We all need support and encouragement to succeed. The University provides support both within faculties and central services to help students achieve the best they can in their academic studies.

Edge Hill Students’ Union is a member-driven organisation, representing all students who attend Edge Hill University. Our vision is to be an essential part of Edge Hill University significantly adding value to your student experience. Specifically, we aim to: •
• •
Be recognised by Edge Hill students and the University as the provider of excellent, effective advice and representation on academic and welfare matters Provide quality, well-used membership and commercial services for our diverse student body Be acknowledged by Edge Hill students as having made a positive difference to their lives
To achieve this we listen to your feedback and ideas, whilst ensuring we offer guidance, support and help if things go wrong.
The Union is run by four elected officers, a President, Vice President Welfare, Vice President Academic Representation and Vice President Activities. The Officers’ roles are to represent the student body on a variety of issues that affect you, our members. We do this by representing your views at a number of University committees and boards and also run a range of campaigns.
The officer team are supported by a team of full-time and part-time staff, as well as part-time Officers, elected to represent; LGBT students, disabled students, black students, part-time/mature students, postgraduate students and women respectively. These Officers help to inform projects that the full-time Officers work on, as well as running their own campaigns on behalf of the students they represent.
An essential function of the Union is our representation and as a result of student feedback we opened an Advice and Representation Centre and over the last two years the service has grown considerably, offering support and guidance in key areas such as academic issues, welfare benefits, housing, money and debt. The Advice and Representation Centre runs drop-in sessions, pre-bookable appointments and phone consultations to help make the service as accessible as possible for all students. The most important aspect of our service is that we are totally independent from the University and so our advice is impartial, confidential and free to students.
Course Reps are also an integral part of our democracy and representation, ensuring all students’ voices are being heard, whether on a course level, or right up to Faculty level. Being a Course Rep is great for employability and transferable skills, empowering yourself and your peers to make sure you’re getting the best from your course.
