ach year Edge Hill graduates help current students realise their ambitions by contributing to the Alumni Fund, which supports the Alumni Excellence Scholarship programme and the University’s Hardship Fund. Established in 2009, the Alumni Excellence Scholarship helps to nurture budding leaders in sport, entertainment, creative arts and the voluntary sector. This year, the Volunteering Excellence Scholarship will be sponsored by the Alumni Fund. By sponsoring the Volunteering Excellence Scholarship the Alumni Fund is celebrating students who have balanced their studies, often with work or family commitments, to demonstrate determination, commitment and achievement beyond their degree. Money raised by alumni also supports Edge Hill’s Hardship Fund, which provides financial support to those students most in need. This money can make the difference between a student continuing their education or being forced to drop out due to their circumstances. It can also give disadvantaged students the initial boost they need to start their academic career. We would like to thank former students for remaining part of Edge Hill University and investing in the future of our students. arah has been awarded a Chancellor’s Scholarship for her passionate promotion of Edge Hill University and its Integrated Nursing and Social Work programme. Alongside her demanding study schedule, Sarah has presented at various national conferences, which helped her overcome a fear of public speaking. Sarah also participated in a national network, volunteering as a Student Nurse Care-Maker as part of the ‘Our Culture is Compassionate’ campaign by the NHS. In November 2014, Sarah was invited to facilitate and chair the BASW (British Association of Social Workers) England Annual Student and Newly Qualified Social Work Conference, as well as being asked to introduce the conference which gave her further opportunity to promote her degree programme and Edge Hill University. Additionally, in April of this year Sarah gave a presentation on the role of a CareMaker at the International Positive Choices conference in Cardiff. Sarah’s efforts were recognised at the 2015 Nursing Times Awards in London, where she was shortlisted for the award of Learning Disabilities Student Nurse of the Year.

ports Studies student Phillipa, has been recognised for her efforts to raise awareness of sexual exploitation and abuse within sport. In 2013, Phillipa volunteered to attend two Edge Hill workshops to learn about the ‘Sports Respects Your Rights UK’ campaign. These workshops aimed to raise awareness of sexual abuse issues within sport but also to develop campaigns to help the volunteers take their knowledge forward and educate others.

imberley has been awarded a Chancellor’s Scholarship as she has demonstrated remarkable compassion, resilience and commitment throughout her life and her time at university. Having overcome much personal adversity, Kimberley took inspiration from her brother’s academic achievements and applied to Edge Hill’s Teaching, Learning and Mentoring Practice course to pursue her goal of working with children.

Phillipa and her fellow volunteers have since promoted the project in the Student Union Hub, where they interacted with both students and staff to publicise the campaign. They also took the campaign online, using social media and the #STOP1in5 slogan in association with the Council of Europe’s One-in-Five campaign. Additionally, Phillipa has delivered workshops to her peers, in particular students within the Department of Sport and Physical Activity. She has remained dedicated to the somewhat difficult task of discussing sensitive issues with other young people and has been committed to the campaign from the beginning.

As well as studying, she has been actively involved in the promotion of her degree programme. She was elected as Course Representative in her first year, acting as a liaison between the staff and her fellow students. Kimberley has also been a Student Mentor to first years and has volunteered her time to help at Open Days and Applicant Days to further promote the University and her course. Kimberley has consistently gone above and beyond expectations, particularly during her work based learning placements in schools, where she baked cakes for charity and gathered extra resources for her students. Kimberley proved so popular that the school have requested her for future placements. Her commitment to her work with children has led her to seek part time employment as a teaching assistant and a seasonal job working abroad as a Children’s Representative with Thomas Cook.

His close relationship with the club has allowed him to combine his love of rugby with his studies. Jason has been an active participant in the Warrington Wolves ‘State of Mind’ project which aims to raise awareness about mental health in sport, the stigma that has often surrounded it and how to seek help. During his second year, Jason decided to explore this issue further by making it the basis of a project for his Understanding Research module. His association with Warrington Wolves enabled him to carry out research with the club and build on the programme already in place. Jason’s clear passion and dedication resulted in him securing a work placement with an advisor to the Department of Health which will allow him to further promote the ‘State of Mind’ initiative and its importance.

JESSICA JOHNSON

JAKE PLANT

BA (Hons) Teaching, Learning BA (Hons) Dance and Drama and Mentoring Practice with Physical Theatres

essica has been awarded the Chancellor’s Scholarship due to the bravery, determination and selflessness that she has demonstrated during her time at Edge Hill. Diagnosed with a brain tumour at the end of her first year in 2013, Jessica allowed a television crew to document her daily activities, including the four hour operation needed to remove her tumour. Within two weeks of her surgery, Jessica returned to assist at the local Brownies and Scouts groups, where she has long volunteered, conscious that they were short on adults to supervise their sessions. She has since dedicated her time to raising awareness about cancer and organising fundraisers for charities such as CLIC Sargent and the Teenage Cancer Trust. Through these charities, Jessica has also helped support other young people in similar situations to her own. After taking a year off from her studies to recover, Jessica is back on course, whilst continuing to volunteer at Brownies, Beavers and Cubs. In November 2014, Jessica’s determination and positive outlook were recognised when she was awarded the St Helens Pride Award for Courage.

Jake’s exemplary work as a Performing Arts Department peer mentor has earned him a Chancellor’s Scholarship Award. Jake has consistently gone above and beyond, volunteering his time and experiences to support, not only his own personal group of mentees, but anyone in need of help. Jake’s efforts earned him Edge Hill’s Mentor of the Year Award 2015, for which he received 16 nominations, more than the number of students he personally mentored. His tutor has credited him with “creating a strong sense of community and sense of belonging,” within the performing arts programme. His hard work and dedication has reduced pressure on staff, central services and even persuaded students to stay at university who might have otherwise left without his help and guidance. His overall contribution to the university was recognised when he won 3rd place in the Edge Hill University Careers Award for the Voluntary Sector earlier this year. Now embarking on his third and final year at Edge Hill, Jake has been chosen to lead a small team of mentors in organising external visits for first year students.

EMILY PRESCOTT BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health)

mily has been awarded a Chancellor’s Scholarship as a result of the dedication and commitment she has demonstrated in promoting mental health wellbeing. Prior to entering the nursing profession Emily worked as an Independent Mental Health Act Advocate, supporting those who are in mental health distress. Her passion about mental health and her enthusiasm shown in her interview led her to become a student representative on the editorial board for the ‘Journal of Mental Health Nursing’. She is now not only a valuable member of the editorial board but is an established contributor. Consequently, she has presented a paper at the International HORATIO mental health conference in Malta. More recently she has become a member of the Care Quality Commission (the independent regulator of health and social care in England) and has completed her first inspection, which is an incredible achievement.

She successfully completed a Fastrack course at Edge Hill and enrolled on to the first cohort of the Psychosocial Analysis of Offending Behaviour Programme in 2013. It is on this course that Michelle has emerged as a leader, taking on the role as Course Representative. She offers compassionate support to her peers, who refer to her as “Our Mother Hen”. She has supported her peers through homesickness, severe illness and loss of loved ones. Due to Michelle’s caring nature she has helped persuade peers to continue with their education. nna has been awarded the Chancellor’s Scholarship in recognition of her contribution to student development in maths, English and social and personal skills whilst working with learners on her Professional Practice placement at Michael John Hairdressing Academy in Liverpool. During this placement Anna worked tirelessly to ensure her lessons were engaging, fun, and above all, inclusive. Her efforts were not only highly commended by the staff at the academy but also by the cohort of learners. The profound effect that Anna had on her class is evident with the learners who, in their own words, “just hated maths and couldn’t do it” to now stating that they “love maths and can do it because it now makes sense”. Anna’s enthusiasm and professionalism whilst on her placement not only enhanced her own career prospects, but has also been beneficial to the reputation of Edge Hill, strengthening the partnership between the University and Michael John Hairdressing Academy. Unsurprisingly, Anna has already secured employment teaching functional skills within the justice system.

RHIANNON EVANS POETRY AWARD

T

his Prize introduced in 2010, recognises and celebrates students who demonstrate creative promise as poets and have the talent to develop further. Professor Rhiannon Evans, who was Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University from 1994 to 2008, has had a lifelong interest in poetry and founded the scholarship on her retirement to benefit budding student poets who want to develop their writing.

STEVEN FLETCHER

BA (Hons) Creative Writing A mature student, Steven, developed a love for poetry listening to The Verb and Poetry Please on BBC radio as he earned a living driving a hackney cab through the night in Liverpool. The journeys he makes as a taxi driver and the customers he interacts with provides a wealth of life experience which is reflected in his poetry. The majority of Steven’s poems focus on exposing the hypocrisy of the consumerist society and challenges the misrepresentation of his home city, Liverpool. Steven views “Poetry as the engine that drives his writing”. With this attitude and approach to his studies, he has already been published in Sapling an internet magazine and is part of Professor Robert Sheppard’s 25 Edge Hill Poets. His poetry has also received a warm reception when he read part of his collection at the ‘Pure Genius Creative Festival’ held on campus. The Rhiannon Evans Award will give Steven the freedom to devote more time to his poetry and help achieve his ambition of performing it to live audiences across the region.

Using Thomas Malory’s 1485 work La Morte D’Arthur as his key text, he will explore the changing status of Palomides in the numerous revised editions that were published in the centuries that followed. Thomas will use this character study to further explore the ideas of imperialism, race and religion throughout the different versions, culminating in an investigation of Victorian opinions on race and ethnicity. Winning the Mark Flinn Scholarship will enable Thomas to further explore the epic primary texts that have inspired his dissertation.
