Edge Hill University Education Liaison and Events Team Our aim in the Education Liaison and Events Team is to work with schools and colleges to raise the aspirations, awareness and achievement of potential higher education students by delivering sessions and activities and providing information, advice and guidance (IAG) which meet the needs of your students. We seek to promote the full and wider benefits of higher education whilst being accurate, transparent and realistic in the IAG given at all stages of the student journey and managing the expectations of the students we meet. The team have extensive experience in delivering high quality and innovative generic and subject specific HE related activities and each year work with over 350 schools and colleges across the country. This brochure outlines the range of activities on offer to you and your students and also identifies how our activities meet and are mapped against the standards set out in the recent IAG guidance. We are also more than happy to deliver bespoke sessions for you if you have particular requests. To ensure that you receive information about the events and activities listed in this brochure as well as any additional events, please keep in touch with the Education Liaison Officer for your area and ensure that contact details for your school or college remain up to date. School and College visits to the University We would recommend that you arrange to visit the University with a group at some time in the year. Visiting a range of Universities enables students to appreciate the different types of institutions available and introduces new courses and ideas to them. Meeting current undergraduate students and seeing how much they are enjoying and succeeding within a particular programme of study is particularly inspirational, with students frequently naming this aspect of visits the most useful and memorable. Individual visit programmes will be tailored to meet the requirements of your students, but could include any combination of the presentations and workshops detailed within this brochure, introductions to departments and subjects, careers information and campus and/or department tours. How to arrange a visit Please contact the Education Liaison Officer who is responsible for your area and they will meet with you to find out about the group of students you would like to bring (we work with students aged 16 and above) and the aims and objectives of the day before agreeing an appropriate programme. If it is a subject specific visit you would like please see the information in this brochure relating to our series of Subject Conferences in the first instance. If you are unable to attend those visits we would hope to be able to arrange an alternative visit, but please be aware that subject specific input is dependent on staff availability so is not always possible. We are happy to welcome groups throughout the year and we would advise you to arrange visits well in advance to avoid disappointment during busy periods. Please note that we are particularly busy in June and July.

Presentations and Workshops Members of the Education Liaison and Events Team are happy to visit schools and colleges throughout the year to give presentations and advice to your students as well as delivering interactive workshops on a range of topics. You will find detailed below a variety of presentations and workshops that we regularly deliver to groups of students. We have given a brief outline of the information and advice the presentation or workshop commonly includes, though we recognise that not all students are at the same stage in the decision-making process and that an off-the-shelf session is not appropriate. We will work with you to identify the requirements of your students and tailor a session accordingly. The sessions typically last between 30 minutes and 1 hour and we would usually ask for a laptop and data projector to be provided. Speakers can also be provided for a range of subjects and courses, although this is subject to staff availability. Subject Conferences A programme of events will run throughout the year delivered jointly by the Education Liaison and Events Team and Edge Hill academic staff. These events are free of charge and are aimed at Year 12 students. Timings for these events are usually 10:00am – 3:00pm and lunch will be provided. The specific dates, programmes for individual events and details of the topics for taster sessions will be confirmed and circulated closer to the dates of the events, but please read the following pages for an outline of what information and advice you can expect your students to pick up from attending. How to book places on Subject Conferences Approximately 6 weeks before each event you will be sent further information and a finalised programme. To reserve places for Conferences you will need to contact the Education Liaison Officer for your area. We will then send you a booking form and Service Level Agreement. The bookings will only be confirmed on receipt of a full list of delegate names and a signed Service Level Agreement. Reservations and bookings are taken on a first come first served basis and some events may have a waiting list. We would urge you to confirm with us numbers (and any changes) as soon as possible to avoid places on the Conferences being unused and colleagues in other schools and colleges being disappointed. We would be happy to visit your students prior to their visit to talk to them about what they can expect from the day and outline the objectives.

General Studies and Critical Thinking General Studies The Education Liaison and Events Team have collaborated with academic departments to develop a programme of sessions designed to assist students in Years 12 & 13 who are currently studying for their General Studies A-level qualifications. The sessions have been devised and developed to supplement the existing teaching of General Studies within school timetables. These sessions are innovative and interactive and will offer students the chance to expand their understanding of the subjects which are covered in the study of General Studies at A-level. The sessions are also designed to introduce the students to some of the study skills and techniques used within Higher Education. The project has been developed by consulting the three main exam board syllabi (Edexcel, OCR & AQA) which offer General Studies as an A-level. In developing this project, we have aligned the three syllabi to find areas of similarity between them. As a result of this, the sessions involved will be useful to all students working towards an A-level in General Studies regardless of which exam board’s syllabus they are following. Each of the sessions involved in the programme will be delivered by members of academic staff from various departments across the University. Utilising their expertise in applicable subject areas they will deliver sessions based around a series of ‘Key Questions’. The sessions are interactive, engaging and beneficial for participating students. Previous sessions have included:
‘How Science affects Society?’ ‘Should the punishment fit the crime?’ ‘Mass Media – Representation or Reality’ ‘The heart – From pre-history to modern miracles of treatment’ The programme for 2011/12 delivery is yet to be finalised. However, if you would be interested in finding out more about our General Studies support sessions or would like to speak to us about how we can help you support your students in their A-level General Studies please contact the Education Liaison Officer for your area.

Critical Thinking In addition to the General Studies programme, we are also able to offer support to schools whose students take Critical Thinking as an A-level. Once again, academic staff have been heavily involved in helping us to develop sessions which introduce students to the key concepts involved within the study of Critical Thinking. Sessions have previously covered the following topics:

The sessions have previously been delivered using a variety of stimulus material, such as films, articles, artwork and texts which have been chosen consciously to provoke debate and discussion amongst participating students. Once again, we would be very keen to hear from schools who are offering Critical Thinking as an A-level subject. However, we would urge you to remember that this is not an exhaustive list, and we would be delighted to work with you to develop tailor-made activities to meet the needs of your students. Higher Education Application Preparation Day - Monday 11th June 2012 This is an event designed to give Year 12 students the chance to find out about the application process in preparation for 2013 entry to HE. Teachers’ and Careers Advisers’ Conference Friday 11th May 2012 This is a popular conference aimed at teachers and careers advisers working in post-16 education. This event has been very successful in previous years, attracting approximately 90 colleagues from within schools and colleges across the North West. The programme for the event will focus on current HE issues and will therefore be confirmed closer to the date, but the day is likely to include update sessions on current issues in HE, Student Finance and graduate employment trends, a chance to quiz current students about their experiences and plenty of time for networking. Although the focus of the day is not on Edge Hill, there will be opportunity to tour the campus and find out more about our provision if you wish. Travelling to the University By road via the M6, off at junction 26, then onto the M58, off at junction 3, taking the A570 towards Southport and Ormskirk. The campus can also be reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59. By rail from Liverpool Central to Ormskirk station on Merseyrail's Northern Line or Preston to Ormskirk station on Northern Rail. The Edgelink bus service runs at 15 minute intervals from Ormskirk bus station to Edge Hill and back throughout the day, 8:15 to 17:50 Monday to Saturday, excluding Bank Holidays.
