Welcome to Sporting Edge, Edge Hill University’s sports complex at Ormskirk. Sporting Edge aims to provide a high quality and varied sports and recreation programme for the whole University community, whether you are a student, member of staff or a member of the local community. Our dedicated and friendly staff are here to help you get the best out of your visit to Edge Hill whether you are a regular user or are visiting for the first time. This last year has been a busy one. It has seen an extension to the sports centre with a new gymnasium and we have welcomed the Sports Therapy Unit into the first floor. Last year saw extra Running Club and Zumba sessions, and the introduction of Salsacise at lunchtimes; we hope to add Group cycling classes to the programme soon. In other areas we are developing the website and will introduce an online payment facility and are improving the way we communicate with our customers through social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
An exciting development has seen the university joining forces with the Students’ Union to form Edge Hill Sport, a partnership which together will deliver student sport and recreation. This partnership will hopefully continue to raise the standard of sport and improve the student experience. Whatever your aim, whether you are young or old, or whether you want to play recreational sport or to become an elite athlete, there is something here for everyone at Sporting Edge.

Edge Hill Sport has created a partnership between the University and the Students’ Union which delivers student sport and recreation. This is a new venture which aims to combine the strengths and resources of both parties to raise the standard of competitive sport and offer more opportunities for recreation and social sport. There are a variety of sporting activities ranging from football to cheerleading and rugby to darts. There are opportunities for students to compete and represent the university as part of ‘Team Edge Hill’ or, for those just looking for something new and fun, why not try the recreation programme called ‘Be Active’.
Team Edge Hill
There are opportunities for students to represent Edge Hill University against some of the best universities in the country in the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) competition. Many of the clubs have professional coaches employed to help improve skills at training sessions and offer match day support at fixtures. This has proved successful over the last two seasons and has seen Edge Hill move up the BUCS rankings to become one of the most improved universities for sport in the country. A selection of the sports clubs and individual sports available are shown on the left but there are others.
Be Active
There is a recreational programme that offers a range of activities for all students during term time. Whether you want to take part as an individual in exercise classes or running clubs, or with others as part of a team in 5-a-side or netball, there is something for everyone. New for this year are ‘Back to Netball’ and ‘No Strings Badminton’. Both of these are open to staff and students who are either new to the sport or just want to play Netball or Badminton for fun. There will be a qualified leader each week who will organise the sessions and offer as much advice as necessary. For further information about student sport check out www.edgehillsu.org.uk
