elcome to the latest issue of Cruise World. As a reader of this magazine it’s a given that you have some interest in cruising! For those that are considering their first cruise holiday, there is no better time to be taking to the seas as over recent months we have seen a huge influx of ships around Australian ports giving us more capacity than we have ever experienced before. The single most important issue to be aware of when deciding ‘which ship is right for me’ is that each and every ship has its own identity, with its own features and benefits that we all tend to perceive differently. The best advice that I can give is to ensure you are booking with a travel consultant who understands the cruise industry and is prepared to take the time to ask you plenty of questions in qualifying your needs. It is imperative that any consultant has a good understanding of what you are looking for in a cruise holiday before they can make any sort of recommendation. Visit your consultant armed with the best advice garnered from this issue!

CRUISE NEWS ALL THE LATEST NEWS AND ‘MUST-HAVES’ FROM THE WORLD OF CRUISING. WORDS: EMMA KRIEGER

Just Say Spaaa...

EUROPEAN DREAMING Royal Caribbean Cruises has announced its increasing commitment to European cruising, with an unprecedented 22 ships set to sail through the region in 2009. Start planning your luxurious European tour now.

FIRE &ICE Watch out surf ‘n turf, it seems Aussies have a new

American favourite, with sales of US-based Carnival Cruises soaring by 300 per cent in the last four years. And though an array of European voyages feature alongside US expeditions on Carnival’s cruise schedule, it’s Carnival’s Fire and Ice tour of Hawaii and Alaska which has proved to be the most popular choice for Australian cruisers.

Nothing spells pure luxury like an afternoon spent at a day spa. Pampered passengers travelling with Holland America Line are in for a treat, as the luxury cruise line has expanded its exclusive Greenhouse Spa on board their entire fleet. Take in the breathtaking views from your relaxing treatment rooms, while enjoy exotic skin, body and hair treatments that range from hot stone massages and pedicures to hairstyling and facials.

FLYING SOLO

Celebrate your single status in May and August and go it alone on APT’s Istanbul to Paris cruise and tour. Yes, it’s time for solo flyers to turn into smug singles as APT have waived their single supplement for anyone travelling by themselves during these months. You’ll get to sample the delights of Turkey before setting sail for 21 nights along the Danube, Main Danube Canal, Rhine and Moselle rivers to Trier, then jumping ship to explore some of Europe’s most famed attractions. And couples have just as much reason to get excited, with APT offering free flights to passengers travelling with their partner.

COLDSNAPS

It’s normally travellers who constantly click, click, click away when on vacation, but it seems that non-travellers around the world have been just as enthusiastic as the passengers who have taken one of Orion’s unforgettable Antarctic Season cruises. On each of the Orion Expedition journeys, the luxury cruise liner’s Bridge Camera displays images of Antarctica’s unique white landscapes. Live via satellite, images of half submerged ice masses and magnificent wildlife are transmitted from MV Orion to their website. During the last Antarctic cruise season, the site received more than a quarter of a million hits. You can still check out the site at www.orionexpeditions.com to see what all of the fuss is about.

Dream Debut

The countdown has started to September 21, when Carnival Dream makes her foray into the cruising world. Carnival Dream’s inaugural schedule will include three 12-day Grand Mediterranean cruises, a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing from Rome to New York and two eight-day Bahamas/Florida cruises. And in keeping with Carnival’s family focus, yearround seven-day Carnival Dream tours will also run services to the eastern and western Caribbean from Port Canaveral, which is conveniently close to Orlando and its world-class theme parks and attractions.

CRUISING ON THE UP AND UP

CRUISE NEWS Recent market research conducted by Cruise Market Watch predicted that a whopping 16.5 million passengers will be carried by cruise ships worldwide in 2009*. Cruise passenger capacity is also on the up and up as new, innovatively designed ships launch in the New Year, making luxury cruising the smartest choice for your 2009 sojourn. *Source: www.cruisemarketwatch.com

SILVERSEA'S TRANSFORMATION Silversea Cruises has just put the finishing touches on a multimillion-dollar renovation of Silver Wind, involving virtually every aspect of the ultra-luxury ship. Highlights include the addition of an observation lounge, an expansive new spa and eight new suites. Undertaken at the end of 2008 during a dry-dock spell in the San Giorgio shipyard in Genoa, Italy, the refurbishment of Silver Wind has channelled a contemporary style that is still warm and inviting, with touches of natural cherry wood, russet and golden tones.

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?

WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR FAMILY ON HOLIDAY, YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN IS USUALLY WHETHER OR NOT THERE WILL BE ENOUGH ON OFFER TO KEEP THEM ALL OCCUPIED SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO HEAR THE ALL-DREADED “I’M BO-ORED!”. BUT NOW, WITH THE ARRIVAL OF CARNIVAL DREAM, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO WORRY WHETHER THEY’LL HAVE TOO MUCH FUN. LEADERS IN FAMILY CRUISING, CARNIVAL, HAVE TAKEN THEIR ‘FUN SHIP’ FLEET PHILOSOPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL, CONSTRUCTING THEIR BRAND NEW 130,000 TON VESSEL WITH 19,000 SQUARE FEET DEDICATED TO KIDS, TWEENS AND TEENS – THE MOST IN CARNIVAL’S ENTIRE 22-VESSEL FLEET. SET TO DEBUT ON SEPTEMBER 21, THREE AGE SPECIFIC ACTIVITY PROGRAMS, EXPANSIVE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PLAY AREAS, AN AQUA PARK AND THE CRUISE INDUSTRY’S LONGEST WATER SLIDE WILL ALL BE JUST PART OF THE ON BOARD FUN.

A VOTRE SANTÉ!

CRACKING A CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE AGAINST A SHIP’S BOW FOR GOOD LUCK FOR A MAIDEN VOYAGE IS STILL A TRADITION THAT REMAINS ALIVE AND WELL TODAY. THESE LUXE BUBBLES THOUGH, SHOULD BE SAVED FOR SIPPING ON DECK. WE GIVE YOU A BRIEF HISTORY LESSON ON SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP CHAMPAGNE HOUSES.

Moët & Chandon

Claude Moët, a wine trader from a family that has resided in the Champagne region since the 14th century, founded his house in Epernay in 1743. His grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, is the one who, in the 19th century, helped the house expand significantly by opening it up to foreign markets. Jean-Rémy Moët handed the house over to his son and his son-in-law, Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles: from that time, it took on the name Moët & Chandon. Today, thanks to inherited tradition and know-how strengthened over the generations, Moët & Chandon is number one in the champagne stakes.

Veuve Clicquot

SAFE AWAY

There’s never been a better time to take a European river cruise, with Avalon Waterways just announcing four special deals for cruisers booking one of their luxury range of European river cruise holidays. With savings of up to $1,470 per couple (subject to conditions and availability), prices have been discounted on Avalon’s entire cruise program sailing the Rhine, Rhone, Moselle and Danube rivers, with a choice of 17 itineraries through 13 countries.

WHAT AN ACT

MAIDEN VOYAGE September is a big month on the cruising calendar with a number of new vessels due to take to the seas. Among the line-up to be launched is Trails of Indochina’s Jayavarman. Operated by Heritage Lines, the 58 metre flagship will operate a range of two, three, four, five and eight day voyages on the Mekong River. Jayavarman will also represent Mekong cruising at its finest, with her 11 deluxe cabins the largest of their kind on any Mekong cruise ship.

It’s an all-star line-up for two of Silversea Cruises’ 2009 voyages. Silver Whisper’s April 5 departure gives cruisers the opportunity to attend lectures from veteran journalist Ted Koppel while they sail from Tokyo to Singapore. Silver Cloud’s July 4 voyage will see actor John Lithgow perform parts of his one-man New York show ‘Stories by Heart’.

The remarkable Madame Clicquot is often considered the first businesswoman of the modern era. Born Nicole-Barbe Ponsardin, she was widowed in 1805 at the age of 27. Veuve Clicquot – veuve meaning widow in French – defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband’s small Champagne house. She enlisted help wisely, took astute risks and made important technological innovations (including the invention of remuage or riddling), leading the house to world-renown. One of her most significant triumphs was sending a secret shipment of her Champagne to Russia in 1814 in defiance of Napoleon’s blockade.

Bollinger

Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 and is still 100 per cent family-owned. Somewhat unusually for those helming a Champagne house, members of the Bollinger family have been growers and producers from the outset. Seventy per cent of Bollinger’s grape supply comes from its own vineyards. This percentage is a minimum, set out in Bollinger’s Charter of Ethics and Quality, which was first published in 1992. This Charter confirms the house’s commitment to true standards of excellence and reinforces its steadfast determination to maintain the standards that have made Bollinger a watchword for quality Champagne.

T

he exuberant, eye-catching hull design of Norwegian Gem – the most recent addition to NCL’s 12-strong international armada – reflects the company’s determination to operate the world’s youngest and most vibrant cruise fleet, while offering the revolutionary Freestyle Cruising concept. SPANNING THE GLOBE NCL’s luxurious, modern ships roam the world’s oceans, calling in at destinations around North and South America, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Bermuda, Alaska, Europe and the Mediterranean. And while NCL agrees that holidays are as much about the journey as the destination, the company endeavours to transform its ships into destinations themselves. The high cruising speeds and excellent manoeuvrability of NCL ships allow for swift passages and full days ashore. The evenings are devoted to delivering a dazzling array of social and recreational activities, as passengers are effortlessly and luxuriously transported to their next port of call. NCL’s cruise itineraries are extremely

varied and offer the contrast of helicopter flights over Alaskan glaciers and Brazilian rain forests and golf games on championship Hawaiian courses to cultural tours of Naples, Pompeii, Alexandria, Rome and Istanbul. FREESTYLING NCL’s famous Freestyle Cruising voyages turn traditional cruising on its head, with no fixed dining times, no formal dress codes and relaxed disembarkation rules. Its ships extend guests’ options with multiple restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as theatres and other non-traditional entertainment options and activities. In addition to these venues, NCL offers a huge array of facilities and activities for guests who might be seeking anything from vigorous physical activities to a relaxing beauty treatment to a quiet spot in which to read a book, play cards or simply enjoy some downtime. NCL’s thoroughly modern cruise ships encompass alternating zones of excitement and relaxation throughout their public areas, catering for passengers of all ages, interests and backgrounds who constitute the cruise

company’s international clientele. Lavish stage shows and circus acts, dedicated children’s centres complete with video arcades and the latest interactive computer games, internet cafés, cinemas, libraries, karaoke rooms, swimming pools, spas and saunas, gymnasiums and beauty treatments – all are available on NCL cruise ships. The most recent ships also incorporate ten-pin bowling alleys, climbing walls and Nintendo’s Wii Fit games.

NCL excels in shipboard accommodation. Many of the cabins on its young fleet have their own balconies and a variety of suites boast glass-walled bathrooms affording spectacular ocean views from your bath or shower. Three-bedroom villas, each spanning 408 square metres and incorporating a private garden, a courtyard swimming pool and a grand piano in the lounge area, are ideal for those once-in-a-lifetime cruise events involving special friends and family.

LUXE CRUISING The themes of innovation and choice permeate NCL cruise ship restaurants, bars and lounges. Here, passengers can enjoy a quick plate of oysters with Champagne, tuck into casual caféstyle fare or savour a full dégustation dinner in a fine specialty restaurant. A variety of ethnic cuisines are available on board, along with vegetarian and kosher dishes and room (cabin) service. And for those who equate cruising with grand dining rooms and elegant dressing, NCL delivers: Norwegian Gem’s Grand Pacific Main Dining Room, seating 558 people, being a case in point.

No Place

like home Travelling with Orion means you don’t need to venture far to explore some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes.

The menu on board MV Orion is unquestionably gourmet, having been created exclusively by chef Serge Dansereau of Bathers’ Pavilion fame, and the stateroom accommodation is the epitome of luxury at sea: slick and stylish, a fusion of wood, satin and marble. With so much to offer, it would be easy to stay on board for the entire duration of the cruise. Yet that’s what makes Orion so great, because its travel expeditions allow guests the best of both worlds – luxury and adventure.

WORDS: kRISTY MEUDELL

t’s true that you always take what you have for granted, particularly when it comes to exploring the natural wonders of your own backyard. Australia is home to such a diverse array of sights and landscapes (many of which surpass those that are stretched out between each far-flung corner of the globe) yet when it comes to travel, as Australians, we seem to overlook what our own great country can offer. Orion Expedition Cruises understands very well what our nation has to offer and as part of their exciting cruise line-up for 2009 the luxury expedition cruise operator journey

to one of the country’s most scenically stunning locations – the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. A regular feature of the cruise calendar during the majority of the southern winter (April to September), the Kimberley Expedition is the best way to take your mind off the cooler temperatures. On board Orion Expedition’s purpose-built vessel, MV Orion, you can wind your way through some of Australia’s most pristine and undisturbed wilderness, taking in wondrous sights such as the King George River and Mitchell Falls, Montgomery Reef and the Horizontal

Waterfalls, while seeing rock wallabies, quolls and crocodiles in their natural habitats. Shore activities are plentiful and travellers are spoilt for choice with bush walks, art gallery tours and Zodiac tours just a few of the included land expeditions. Travellers can even choose which way they’d prefer to start and finish the voyage with the option to board or disembark in Darwin or Broome. On board, passenger numbers are limited to just over 100, an intimate number which is closely matched by those of the staff, who tally to 75, the highest staff-to-guest ratio of the region.

lack snow-boots aren’t generally considered cruise ship attire, but you will find yourself wearing them when you hit Juneau, Alaska, your first port of call on the last leg of APT’s Rockies and Alaska Cruise and Land tour. Of course, you don’t actually need to bring them in your suitcase: the protective footwear will be provided by your tour operator when you sign up for three hours of dog-sledding atop an Alaskan glacier. More than 250 shore excursions are available to APT travellers during the cruise component of the tour. The cruise follows 12 days of land-based touring through the North American Rockies with local Canadian guides. The idea is to encourage passengers to relax aboard one of the most luxurious ships at sea. But with activities galore on offer, even 250-thread-count cotton sheets and a decadent pillow menu is unlikely to keep you in your cabin. Dog-sledding has to be one of the most authentic experiences on offer for visitors to Alaska, and this unforgettable land

10 Cruise World 2009

18/2/09 4:04:06 PM

tour begins with a spot of ‘flightseeing’ – a helicopter tour over lush rainforest, deep blue crevasses and glacier-carved peaks, landing on the Mendenhall Glacier. Of Juneau’s 42 glaciers, Mendenhall is probably its most famous, renowned for its 1.5-mile-diameter face and exclusive dog-mushing camp.

Dog mushing has been the state sport since 1972, and the Mendenhall dog-sledding experience allows you to feel as much a part of the world-famous Iditarod Race from Anchorage to Nome as you can do without officially entering the 1,000-mile dash. You’ll be led by your own ‘musher’ and a team of lean, athletic Husky dogs. You’ll have to hang on – the ride can get a tad rough – but nothing can detract from the thrill of being pulled through spectacularly icy environs by your eager four-legged transport team.

Though it’s tempting to head straight back to the premium cocoon that is your Holland America Line cruiser (especially as it offers more space per passenger than any other cruise line), there are so many other Juneaubased tours worth signing up for.

From whale-watching expeditions to hikes, gold-panning to sea kayaking, the Alaskan capital is bursting with activities that appeal, not just to nature-lovers and adventureseekers but to those seeking something with more of a VIP feel. Take a private Hummer tour and realise why this northerly city is often called ‘little San Francisco’. (Hint: it has to do with its mix of old and new buildings, narrow streets and buzzing waterfront.)

There are numerous options for adventure activities and wildlife-spotting in Skagway, too, but
this town’s gold-rush connections make it a fascinating place for those interested in the region’s history. Hear stories about the Klondlike Gold Rush on the White Pass Summit Scenic Railway tour, a memorable three-hour round-trip that traverses some of the North’s most ruggedly beautiful terrain to reach the White Pass Summit at 2,865 feet.

Right: take a leisurely cruise on the Lake Louise Sunrise boat for glorious scenery. Below: The Rocky Mountaineer: a terrific way to see the sights.

While you may not get the Gold Leaf service you will have experienced aboard the Rocky Mountaineer (offered through APT), the fact that the railway is listed, along with Paris’ Eiffel Tower and New York’s Statue of Liberty, as an international historic Civil Engineering Landmark, makes this train-ride pretty unbeatable.

Make sure you’re rested and ready for day three, as it is one of most breathtaking ports of the cruising component of the Rockies and Alaska Cruise: Glacier Bay. Priority access is given to all Holland America Line cruise passengers, so have your camera ready, because you’ll have all the time you need to capture scene after spectacular scene detailing the geological wonders of this National Park and Preserve.

Glacier Bay’s four-hour Alaskan Wildlife experience is full of photo opportunities.

...APT MAKE EVERYTHING JUST AS EASY FOR THEIR TOUR GUESTS, OFFERING WHAT IS, ARGUABLY, THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE TOURING PRODUCT ON THE MARKET... The tour begins with a drive through the minutes over Tongass National Forest, one world-famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, which boasts the world’s largest gathering of bald eagles. You’ll continue on to the Kroschel Films Wildlife Center, an extraordinary 60-acre wildlife park owned by filmmaker Steve Kroschel. The protected park is home to more than 100 species of indigenous animals including moose, wolf, Arctic fox, wolverine, lynx and reindeer – many of them orphaned, but now thriving in their new habitats.

You can continue to walk on Alaska’s wild side on the fourth and final day of your cruise component, at Ketchikan. Long renowned as the salmon capital of the world, it is also prime bear territory.

A floatplane will take you on a once-in-alifetime wildlife expedition to observe some of the wild black bears of South-east Alaska in their natural habitat. You’ll fly for about 30

of the largest National Forests in the United States of America, to access Neets Bay, a beautifully scenic setting that is considered one of Alaska’s best bear-watching spots. Here, from a secured viewing area, you’ll be able to watch as black bears make fishing for their favourite meal – salmon – look oh-so-easy.

But then, APT make everything just as easy for their tour guests, offering what is, arguably, the most comprehensive touring product on the market, as well as points of distinction such as tipping on both the land and cruise sectors of the journey, guaranteed upgrades, and the most luxurious, best-located accommodation available. Really, there is no better way to see the Canadian Rockies and neighbouring Alaska. APT provides more than your typical tour: it offers those happy to wear snow-boots the travel experience of a lifetime.

BECOME AN INTREPID EXPLORER, CRUISING SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST MEMORABLE AND EYE-OPENING DESTINATIONS. WORDS: NICOLE LOVELOCK

Muscat, Oman

Be seduced by the intriguing Arabian capital of Muscat, with its whitewashed buildings, dusty streets and Middle Eastern allure. It is fitting that this capital city’s name is translated from the Old Persian words for ‘safe anchorage’, as docking here makes it difficult to leave. You’ll be bewitched by this spiritual city, where men glide by in traditional dishdasha robes on their way to pray at the Grand Central Mosque. Don’t miss a chance to get lost in one of the world-renowned souks – a maze of market stalls selling local wares.

Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala Sandwiched between its more famous Central American neighbours, Mexico and Belize, Guatemala is often overlooked – and unfairly so. With its rich Mayan history, Guatemala is a hidden gem: a place in which you can step back in time and marvel at a world seemingly untouched by modern life. Practise your Spanish on friendly locals, wander through markets full of woven goods, terracotta and silver, and end the day with a cup of local coffee, grown with beans from a native plantation.

Mdina, Malta Yangtze, China There’s more to China than the Great Wall, and many of its lesser-known charms can be found along the country’s rivers. Known to locals as Chang Jiang (Long River), this spectacular waterway – said to be the cradle of Chinese civilisation – is the world’s third largest at more than 6,000 kilometres long. Wind your way along the western Wushan and cross the Three Gorges, where sheer cliffs soar above a rising mist. Be amazed by coffins buried high in the rock walls, an ancient burial custom of the local Ba people reserved for top warriors.

A speck in the Mediterranean, the island nation of Malta is a patchwork of Italian, North African and Arabian styles and heritage, giving it an appealingly eclectic feel. While gorgeous beaches encircle the coast, a trip inland to the former capital, Mdina, is a must. Referred to as the ‘silent city’ – cars have been banned from its streets – Mdina is a treasure-trove of Basque architecture, with the impressive St Paul’s Cathedral the best example of the style. Nearby island Comino, said to have a permanent population of four, is also worth the trip: its claim to fame is as a location in films Troy and The Count of Monte Cristo.

Rabaul, Papua New Guinea

Ushuaia, Argentina

The wilderness beckons at this eco-tourism hub, where hikers, nature-lovers and divers converge to experience the wondrous local attractions. Rabaul was a Japanese naval base during World War II; today, its underwater environs are a fascinating ships’ graveyard. A collection of wrecks and spectacular coral gardens make this one of the world’s hottest dive spots. You can also go tribal with a trip up the Sepik River, PNG’s longest waterway, and discover the ancient carvings that are kept safe in rural village ‘spirit houses’ along the way.

Once a penal colony, the world’s southernmost city is an exciting destination for those prepared to brave the chill for the chance to see some of Argentina’s most stunning landscapes. With the pure glacial waters of the Beagle Channel on one side and the snow-capped peaks of the Martial Range on the other, the natural beauty of the region will have you continually reaching for your camera. The highlight of a trip to this region, however, is a plane-ride away in El Calafate, home of the Perito Moreno Glacier, a 60-metre wall of ice with a magnificent blue sheen. 2009 Cruise World 17

Korcula, Croatia

From a distance, this Croatian island appears like a medieval castle, with 14th-century stone walls protecting the historic buildings of the Old Town. Bring a sense of adventure – after all, this is said to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo – and hire a scooter to explore the magic of this lush hideaway. For those who prefer two feet to two wheels, Korcula’s shady laneways provide welcome refuge from the sun, while the local selection of Dalmatian smoked meats will please the most carnivorous of visitors.

Istanbul, Turkey

Immerse yourself in the history of this energetic and lively city. Like Rome, the city’s oldest part was built on seven hills and each is home to a celebrated mosque, but none is more famous than the Blue Mosque, so named for the tiny tiles that adorn its interior walls. Discover the Byzantine beauty of the Basilica Cistern, an underground chamber supported by hundreds of marble columns, and rest your feet at one of the city’s many tranquil tea gardens after a day spent gallery-hopping.

Tromsø, Norway

Halong Bay, Vietnam Escape the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and embrace a gentler pace while exploring the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994, Halong Bay is home to thousands of tiny islands, limestone karsts and atmospheric grottoes. Start the day with a bowl of pho, a meaty broth that will give you the kick you need to explore deserted beaches, ideal for swimming and kayaking. Finish off with a fresh seafood dinner concocted using the day’s catch, provided by one of the many fishermen inhabiting the floating villages that populate the bay. 18 Cruise World 2009

High on the ‘to-do’ list of any stargazer is a trek to see the spectacular Northern Lights. Best viewed between November and April, the Aurora Borealis is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which solar wind collides with gases in the atmosphere to create intense beams of coloured light. Once you’ve seen nature’s rainbow, book in for an exhilarating dog-sledding expedition, where teams of willing huskies will show you the sights of SaltfjelletSvartisen National Park from a different perspective.

Intricate Renaissance-era fountains, immaculate floral motifs and striking colours prevail throughout most of ms Volendam, and if her floral fabrics and tapestries don’t excite you, the sweeping vistas, pleasant service and fine dining surely will. From the moment you board, the staff welcome and accommodate passengers with great care. Indeed, Holland America Line has made it a practice over the years to employ Indonesian crew members, promoting their friendliness and efficiency. Perhaps this at least partly explains why ms Volendam enjoys a particularly high ratio of repeat guests, many of who have been on board so often they feel quite at home with the staff and crew.

Ms Volendam is spacious without being intimidating. Her size and layout makes you feel comfortable within minutes of boarding. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this ship are the assorted hidden spaces located around her public decks, perfect for intimate conversation or just a quiet place to hide out and read. OCEANIA CRUISES

Cruise Through

History

OCEANIA’S SCANDINAVIAN SPLENDOURS TOUR ALLOWS CRUISERS TO EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS: MODERN LUXURY AND MEDIEVAL CHARM. WORDS: MAREE CHRISTIE

I

t isn’t often you hear the words medieval and modern mentioned in the same sentence – unless, of course, you’re talking about cruising aboard Oceania’s ship Regatta on its Scandinavian Splendours cruise. For the past five seasons, the voyage has taken passengers between Stockholm in Sweden and Dover, England, a 14-day journey that is rich not just in port time but also in history. From Amsterdam, Holland, the home of Anne Frank (and numerous charming canals and windmills) to the 14th-century streets of Bruges, from cathedrals in St Petersburg to 13th-century Polish castles and icons such as Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid statue, Regatta’s voyage around Europe is an unforgettable historical journey from the moment passengers set foot on deck. But though the sights and attractions onshore stretch back through many centuries – as does much of the traditional fare unique to each location – back on board, Regatta offers its cruisers a comfortably contemporary experience. Taking first-class cruising to a whole new level, Oceania is the only upper-premium cruise company in the world that combines fine dining, luxury accommodation and highend service without sacrificing either value

M

or the ship’s personable, relaxed atmosphere. Sleek and sophisticated, as befits the gleaming flagship of the Oceania fleet, Regatta houses every mod con a passenger could wish for. Four fine dining restaurants, eight lounges and bars, a casino and a state of the art fitness centre and spa are on offer for guests, along with 24-hour complimentary room service, wine- and cheese-tasting and even dance lessons. Best of all, with just 342 staterooms and suites (70 per cent of which have their own private verandahs) – each decked out with internet connection, TV, telephone and 700-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets – the voyage, like all of Oceania’s cruises, caters for a maximum number of 684 guests, ensuring personalised service from the 400 cruise staff. For those looking to enhance their time at sea further, upgrades to Concierge Level and its wealth of privileges (priority embarkation, restaurant reservations, welcome Champagne, mini bar and DVD player) are available from $14 per day. But what cost can you attribute to such a luxe experience, especially when it involves the priceless possibility of visiting Russia’s Hermitage Museum? Remarkably, carving your own piece of travel history starts from as little as $6,095 per person.

CUNARD CRUISES

Titanic Proportions YOU’LL FEEL LIKE THE KING OF THE WORLD WHEN YOU TAKE A TRANSATLANTIC VOYAGE BETWEEN SOUTHAMPTON AND NEW YORK ON CUNARD’S QUEEN MARY 2. WORDS: MAREE CHRISTIE

hen you step through the doors of Queen Mary 2 and into her soaring grand lobby, you’ll feel as if you have somehow been magically transformed into one of the characters from the cinematic blockbuster Titanic. The grandest, most magnificent ocean liner ever built, she’s a true heir to the timeless elegance and legacy of luxury cruise liners that have sailed the seas in times past, and a Transatlantic Crossing is both a legendary experience and a travelling privilege that you’re unlikely to forget. Journeying between Southampton and New York, you’ll spend six days on board the spectacular ocean liner, whose every detail harkens back to the golden age of ocean travel. Sweeping staircases, soaring public areas and a 360˚ promenade deck are all part of the opulence lavished across Queen Mary 2’s 13 decks. It’s a world where modern fairytales can come true. Queen Mary 2’s ‘kingdom’ has room for 2,592 guests and they all get the royal treatment. Three-quarters of her rooms have private balconies but all offer trademark Cunard touches: tasteful décor, rich wood furnishings and details, bathrobes, slippers, 24-hour room service and nightly turndown service. Her stately size allows for a world of diversions, in fact, no other ship has offered as enticing and diverse a range of activities as Queen Mary 2. There’s a state of the art gym and sports deck, virtual reality golf, basketball court, casino, designer boutiques, the largest library at sea, the only Canyon Ranch SpaClub at sea, Planetarium, cinema, nightclubs, fine dining plus a Cultural Enrichment Programme, where guests can partake in a range of stimulating seminars and lectures from distinguished experts. For all the daytime distractions however, it’s when the sun sets that she turns a slightly deeper shade of regal. Beaded gowns, black ties and tails descend upon her ballroom as dancers sweep across the largest ballroom at sea in the Queens Room. It’s enough to send you straight up to the top deck to the bow to spread your arms out and proclaim to the wind that you’re “the king of the world!” Far left: The grand lobby of Queen Mary 2. PRINCESS CRUISES

Land of the

Long White Cloud TAKE IN THE UNTAPPED BEAUTY OF NEW ZEALAND ABOARD THE STUNNING DIAMOND PRINCESS. WORDS: NICOLE LOVELOCK

T

he poet Robert N. Rose wrote: “Ships are the nearest thing to dreams that hands have ever made’. And after stepping aboard

Diamond Princess on Creative Cruising’s 12-day Auckland to Sydney voyage, you’ll know exactly what he meant. Five-star comforts are all part of the experience, as the dedicated crew attend to your every need; from providing 24-hour room service, fixing your favourite drink at one of the many well-stocked bars to booking a rejuvenating hot stone massage at the Lotus Spa. At this rate, you’ll find your sea legs in no time! Your luxurious voyage begins on the North Island of New Zealand, where from Auckland you’ll travel south via

Christchurch and Dunedin, the relaxing pace ensuring everyday worries just melt away. Take a quiet moment with your partner on an open-air deck with a glass of Champagne in hand, and let the kids have their own fun at the expansive teens’ and children’s area. With so many dining options – from the romantic ambience of Sabatini’s Italian restaurant to a laid back pool-side pizza – you can be sure there’s something for everyone. The centrepiece of this cruise is the Fjordland National Park – or Te Wahipounamu in Maori, meaning ‘place of greenstone’ – whose natural beauty will leave you breathless with wonder. Majestic mountain views, native wildlife and scenic waterfalls will make you feel like you’re at the edge of civilisation,

all the while being pampered on board one of the world’s largest and most innovative ships. Take the time at sea to explore Diamond Princess in all her glory – unwind in your spacious cabin (740 of which offer a balcony), take a refreshing dip in one of the four swimming pools or be entertained at the Broadway-style theatre. Make your holiday even more memorable by taking advantage of an onshore excursion, one-day tours from port cities that cover everything from a historic visit to Tasmania’s former penal colony, to a heart-stopping climb up the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Twelve dreamy days later, you’ll be floating back on land after a magical holiday experience.

uniworld Uniworld IS celebrating the start of a new year with a new ship and an expanded cruise program. WORDS: Maree Christie

W

hile the majority of us toasted the arrival of the new year with Champagne and a string of resolutions, European cruising specialist Uniworld started 2009 with a new addition to its fleet of boutique, hotel-style ships – River Beatrice – and the launch of the Epicurean Adventurer program.
Assigned two itineraries – Enchanting Danube (March to November) and Danube Holiday Markets (November and December) – River Beatrice’s debut season will kick off in March and take her to four countries: Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany.
Each voyage is limited to 134 guests, and both take travellers around some of the world’s most legendary sights, simultaneously treating them to the high standards of service and accommodation for which the cruise company is renowned.

A Taste for

Cruising Left: Selecting fresh produce for meals aboard River Beatrice. Above (insert): Uniworld’s River Beatrice. Far left: a luxe stateroom.

Rooms on board are beautifully furnished and appointed, with fine Egyptian cotton sheets, plush terry robes, air-conditioning and flatscreen TVs. Eighty per cent of the ship’s staterooms come with private French balconies, while the ship’s public areas include a lounge with panoramic views, a library, a sundeck, massage services, a fitness centre and even the use of bicycles.
There is just one restaurant on board but the already-world-class cuisine offered by Uniworld will be stepped up a notch, not

only on River Beatrice’s voyages but across 12 of the cruises on offer for 2009.
Beginning for the first time in 2009, Uniworld will offer cruisers an Epicurean Adventurer program, appealing to devout foodies and indeed, to all lovers of fine food and wine. Cruise participants will enjoy a host of culinary delights, on board and on shore, as they take in exotic culture and experiences.
As part of Uniworld’s Epicurean onboard program, guests will be able to have private wine-tastings plus food- and wine-matching

sessions, and will be treated to special dinners prepared with fresh ingredients from the regions through which they are travelling. They will have opportunities to learn from master chefs who’ll perform cooking demonstrations, reveal trade secrets and prepare signature dishes en route.
Special guided shore excursions will take passengers to castles, vintners’ homes and local markets to sample fine regional wines and delicacies. Luxury European cruising has never been quite so tantalising!
