Passenger Review: Mystic Mekong
Discover the countries and cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia on board a traditional river steamship that offers space, comfort and superlative service.
Cruising the Yangtze River or sailing into Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong offers a fascinating insight into ancient and modern China.
Expedition voyages to remote places in the Arctic or deep into the Amazon in four- and five-star luxury are hallmarks of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
Three new, traditionally styled Costa ships are being launched, each featuring a different artistic theme: meet Luminosa, Pacifica and Deliziosa.
Elegant and quintessentially British, the third Queen Elizabeth will be one of the world’s finest liners when she takes to the seas in 2010.
Pre- and post-cruise, there’s plenty to see and do in Los Angeles, one of the world’s liveliest cities.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s magnificent first post-Panamax ship redefines the notion of Freestyle Cruising.
Justine Sealey, Manager of Ramsgate Travel Service, took a memorable cruise along the Mekong from Saigon to Siem Reap on board RV Orient Pandaw.

River cruising on RV Indochina Pandaw
here is no better way to experience the contrasts of Indochina than to cruise the waterways that join the two countries, two cultures and two ways of life of Vietnam and Cambodia. For centuries, great rivers such as the Mekong and Irrawaddy have formed the watery roadways for the local people who live in the riverside villages along their banks, and cruising in a traditional steamer through this remote region provides a special insight into this intriguing part of Asia. RV Indochina Pandaw is one of six ships recently completed by Pandaw Cruises as exact replicas of the colonial steamers that plied these waters early last century. In the 1920s, the original Irrawaddy Flotilla Company ran more than 650 vessels on the rivers of Burma and was one of the largest privately owned fleet of ships in the world. Unfortunately, the entire fleet was scuppered in 1942 when the country was invaded by Japan. In 1995, Burma historian Paul Strachan revived the company by first restoring an original Clyde-built steamer called the Pandaw, and then building five new replicas, thereby creating a unique style of river cruising and what is now the largest luxury river cruise company in Asia. Cruiseco has exclusive charter of the
vessels and offers 43 rotations a year of tours from Saigon to Siem Riep, and vice-versa. The voyages make it possible connect three important destinations in one trip: the former southern capital of Vietnam, Saigon; the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh; and the World Heritage monuments at Angkor Wat – as well as experience a river journey on Indochina Pandaw. Before boarding for the seven-night voyage, there is time to explore the essential sights of the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), such as the Reunification Palace, Former US Embassy and Ben Thanh Market. On board Indochina Pandaw, the roomy staterooms are full of character and comfort. The colonial-style décor and old-fashioned service take you back to a time of elegant travel, and each ship, hand-finished in brass and teak by traditional craftsmen, is in itself an object of great beauty. While the atmosphere on board is informal and relaxed, there is a ratio of one staff member to every two guests, so you can be sure your every wish is granted. Cabins do not have mini-bars, satellite TVs, internet or phones, as the company believes that passengers are usually trying to escape from these trappings of everyday life back home. Many passengers describe life on board a > winter 2009 3

While offering an authentic adventure experience, travellers are cushioned in comfort, caring service and all the good things one looks for in life. The cruise underway, the first stop is a mooring near the southern Vietnamese town of Cai Be and the first of many fascinating side trips. Using traditional junks and local ferries to explore the canals, country backwaters and evergreen islands, you will soon drift into the local pace of life. Along the banks, farmers tend rice paddies and plantations as they have done for generations and Indochina Pandaw’s shallow draft allows access to the remotest areas and ensures easy berthing at the best points of interest. Shore visits are led by expert local guides and take in all the major Buddhist temples, historical sites, markets, local villages and major towns. The capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, still retains its French charm and there is plenty of time to enjoy the many attractions of this vibrant city. The tour visits the Royal Palace and spectacular Silver Pagoda, one of the few places in Cambodia where artifacts embodying the rich Khmer culture were remarkably preserved by the

A fitting end to the journey is an exploration of the extraordinary 12th-century temple complexes of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. BEHIND THE
BAMBOO CURTAIN
Cruising the Yangtze River or sailing into Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong offers a fascinating insight into ancient and modern China. WORDS: KRIS MADDEN
T
The mighty Yangtze River
hirty years ago, Deng Xiaoping, one of the most powerful figures in the history of the People’s Republic of China, initiated a series of social and economic reforms that brought about profound changes to the world’s most populated nation. The socioeconomic and political changes initiated under his leadership saw China lift its ‘bamboo curtain’, revealing itself to the rest of the world and turning a once poverty-stricken country into one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies. Today, China continues to advance with great determination towards its goal of becoming a modern, prosperous and open country. With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, approximately 20 per cent of the world’s total, it is set to be the economic and social powerhouse of the 21st century. Three decades of stellar economic growth have improved overall standards of living for many Chinese people, and while the majority still live in rural areas, many have sought new lifestyles in the rapidly expanding cities that underpin China’s new-found prosperity. At the end of 2008, the total number of people employed in China was almost 775 million, with more than 300 million employed in urban areas. Health care in both urban and rural areas has also improved the health of the Chinese people, with the average life expectancy increasing from 36 years in 1949 to an average of 73 years today.
Tourism has also played a large part in China’s success. In 1978, China received only 230,000 international foreign tourists, because of the limitations on who was allowed to visit the country. Last year China received 130 million inbound travellers and, according to the World Tourism Organisation, by 2020 it will become the world’s biggest tourism destination with the number of inbound tourists forecast to reach 210 million, generating US$58 billion. As the past half a century of history shows, burgeoning growth has fuelled rapid change in China, while the next 50 years is likely to see it emerge as the world’s greatest power. There is no better time than now to visit China – as the next chapter in its story is just starting to unfold.
River cruising in China One of the best ways to experience the heart and soul of both old and new China is to take a cruise along the legendary Yangtze River, or Chang Jiang as it’s also known. There is an old saying in China that ‘if you haven’t travelled up the Chang Jiang, you haven’t been anywhere’. A journey by riverboat along this majestic and controversial waterway is the best way to see remnants of China’s ancient culture co-existing alongside the country’s modern framework. While travelling along the Yangtze, it’s easy to see why the steep gorges, ancient temples and misty mountains of the Three Gorges have inspired Chinese artists for centuries. In comparison, the Three Gorges Dam, one > WINTER 2009 7

> of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in the world, is an artwork of engineering and shows why China is one of the fastest-developing nations on Earth. One of the greatest benefits of river cruising in China is that you can explore long distances of this vast country in a relatively short time. Another is that you can do it in comfort and without the hassle of packing and unpacking each day. Viking River Cruises has a range of China itineraries that combine pre- and post-cruise touring in Beijing and Shanghai with a Yangtze cruise aboard the luxury Viking Century Sun. Included are the highlights of Beijing, including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square. You can visit the famous Terracotta Warriors in Xian before flying to the gateway of the Yangtze at Chongqing and boarding the ship. future is reflected in this important river. For the next 240 kilometres you will follow the river as it winds its way to the regional port of Wuhan, but not before passing through the Xiling Gorge, Shibaozhai and Jingzhou, and the extraordinary five-stage ship locks at the Three Gorges Dam. The journey ends in Shanghai, China’s most cosmopolitan city. The historic buildings along the waterfront of the Bund contrasted against the futuristic city skyline probably best tell the story of China’s past and present.
FACT FILE Cruise lines that visit China include: Azamara Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cruise West, Cunard, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Saga Cruises, Silversea, Viking River Cruises and Voyages of Discovery.
A slow boat to China Arriving in Shanghai by ship certainly gives you a feeling for the romantic days of the old Far East. A number of cruise lines call in at Shanghai, either as part of specialised Asian itineraries or sectors on round-world voyages. It is an excellent stepping-off point for either embarking on a river cruise or travelling to other parts of Asia.

Costa Cruises has a range of Asian cruise itineraries that stop in Shanghai, cruising on board the luxurious Costa Allegra or Costa Classica. In 2010, Sun Princess will embark on a 42-night return voyage from Sydney stopping in Shanghai. Ocean Princess will also sail for 48 nights from Shanghai to Cape Town, South Africa; and Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria will both visit Shanghai on their 2010 World Cruises. hile melting sea ice and the resulting plight of ice-dependent polar bears may be one reason why the Arctic is showing up on the cruising radar these days, the growing list of ways to travel there is certainly another. The most luxurious mode of travel is aboard the vessels of HapagLloyd Cruises, specifically MS Bremen and MS Hanseatic. Unique for expedition vessels, MS Bremen is rated four-star and MS Hanseatic five-star – “an outstanding ship for the best
in destination-intensive exploration voyages”, according to the Berlitz Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships. Both have the highest ice ratings for security in ice-strewn polar waters. The standards of food and service on board both vessels are excellent and the experts on board are world-class. The voyages are as impressive as the ships. Take, for example ‘The Adventures of the Northwest Passage’ that MS Bremen sails from Greenland’s tongue-twisting port of Kangerlussuaq, deep within Søndre Strømfjord, on one of the world’s most impressive waterways. The goal of the 25-day voyage is to traverse the Northwest Passage in the wake of Roald Amundsen, the first man to complete this great voyage across the top of Canada, disembarking in Nome Alaska before flying down to Vancouver. Virtually the whole of the voyage is above the Arctic Circle and it calls into rarely visited Inuit communities that have
a rich artistic heritage, particularly in carving. Of course, the legendary bays and straits and sounds of this passage are the home to polar bears, beluga whales, narwhals and walrus. The extra luxury of MS Hanseatic is not achieved through timidity, either. For a couple of her Antarctic voyages next summer, HapagLloyd is offering free upgrades, substantial onboard credit or no single-traveller surcharge. Then in May 2010, MS Hanseatic has a voyage with an excellent sail plan that in a 16-day return voyage from Halifax, Nova Scotia, circumnavigates Newfoundland island, visits Labrador and sails down the Saint Lawrence River to beautiful Québec City and back. This is the best of Canada’s Maritimes with the music and hospitality of St John’s, the site of the first European settlement of North America at L’Anse aux Meadows, the strange French dependency of St Pierre & Miquelon and the whales and history of the St Lawrence.

At the end of July 2010, MS Bremen sails north from Kangerlussuaq and along the Greenland coast visiting various communities with unpronounceable names: Illulissat, Uummannaq, Nuuk and Qaanaaq. She then sails across Davis Strait to Canada’s Hudson Bay and all the way to Churchill before returning to Greenland. In summer, Greenland lives up to its name – all rich grass and fields of flowers and in this season, hundreds of white beluga whales congregate along the shores of Hudson Bay. In September 2010, MS Hanseatic visits a region that is largely terra incognita for Australians. The Kamchatka Peninsula is a wild and wonderful volcanic part of Siberia, and above it lies the Chukchi Peninsula and the Bering Strait. In a 21-day voyage from Nome to Yokahama MS Hanseatic crosses from the USA to Russia and along the coast of this fascinating land to Japan with a stop in Hokkaido before concluding in Tokyo. If far eastern Siberia is too mainstream for you, wait until April 2011 when MS Hanseatic steams down the length of the Amazon from Iquitos to Belém over 15 days. This memorable voyage takes you to Manaus and the confluence of the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. Of all the great river journeys, this is the greatest. That’s typical of a couple of beautiful ships offering voyages to the world’s most out-of-the-way places. ■

osta Cruises launches three new ships this year, bringing its fleet of luxury ocean liners to 15. Another two will enter service in spring 2011 and 2012. The 17 liners will be able to carry up to 46,400 passengers – an increase of 50 per cent on the company’s 2008 capacity – which adds up to a total investment of $4.5 billion. The new liners – Costa Luminosa, Costa Pacifica and Costa Deliziosa – have been designed in traditional style. Like
floating Italian holiday resorts, they offer every comfort, convenience and amenity to please the most discerning of guests, while securing a place among the most beautiful and exciting ships afloat. Continuing its 60-year tradition as a patron of the arts, Costa Cruises has acquired millions of dollars worth of original artworks, including sculpture, paintings, murals, wall hangings and hand-crafted artisan furnishings, to install in the ships for its million-plus
passengers a year to enjoy. Each ship will have a different theme. For example, the main focus of Costa Pacifica is music, a theme followed through in the selection of artwork, fun furnishings, lively atmosphere and ambience. Costa Pacifica even has music created for individual environments choreographed by musical director Mauro Pagani. Described as “an incredible symphony of styles trends and crossover sounds”, Pagani has written arrangements for 22 > WINTER 2009 13

> of the most famous songs of all time, as well as seven original compositions, especially for the ship. Each area features one of these songs. Costa Pacifica also is the first ship to be fitted with a recording studio where guests can sing and record their chosen song as a holiday souvenir. Her maiden voyage will be a 13-night cruise from Genoa to St Tropez, Barcelona, Cadiz, Lisbon and on to Amsterdam. True to her name, Costa Luminosa sparkles – literally – with Tiffany windows, fabulous Venetian Murano glass chandeliers, fine marble, mother of pearl, luminescent fabrics and inset LEDs, while state-of-the-art technology provides outstanding light and colour effects. Displaying innovative art and elegance, she champions the work of Colombian figurative
artist Fernando Botero. His 910-kilogram bronze sculpture of a voluptuous reclining woman commissioned by Costa Cruises and entitled ‘Donna sdraiata 2004’ (‘Reclining Woman 2004’) is a focal point of the spectacular Supernova Atrium. The central staircase displays a collection of previously unpublished large black-andwhite photographs of Botero at work, entitled ‘A Homage to the Master’. The most innovative liner in the fleet, Costa Luminosa boasts grandiose public areas including the atrium, Phoenix Theatre to seat more than 800, Grand Electra Bar, Vega Casino, Altair Disco, Taurus Restaurant and Rigel Cigar Lounge. Her nine-night maiden voyage departs from Savona for Marseilles,

Barcelona, Palma Tunis, Malta and Palermo. Costa Pacifica and Costa Luminosa are to be jointly christened in June at Ponte Andrea Doria in the port of Genoa. Costa Cruises believes the joint christening marks an Italian seafaring first and has applied to Guinness World Records to verify the achievement. The celebratory show, appropriately dubbed ‘An Italian Portrait in Music and Light’, pays tribute to the “all-Italian ability for making dreams come true”. Costa Deliziosa – a sister ship of Costa Luminosa – is under construction at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in the northern Italian province of Venice and is scheduled to enter service in February 2010. Her design will also be cutting-edge, exclusive and innovative to satisfy Costa’s discerning high-end clientele. A 92,700-ton vessel, she will be able to carry up to 2,828 passengers. Her maiden voyage will travel from Savona in Italy to Dubai, stopping in Oman and Bahrain, with a second voyage stopping in India and the Maldives. ■

Elegant and quintessentially British, Queen Elizabeth will be one of the world’s finest liners when she takes to the seas in 2010. WORDS: TRICIA WELSH
C
unard’s new Queen Elizabeth has already achieved a major milestone despite the fact that her construction is not expected to be completed for at least another year. When her maiden voyage was announced to past guests in April, berths on the 2,092-passenger ocean liner sold out in a record 29 minutes – making it the fastest-selling voyage in the prestigious shipping company’s 170-year history. “In fact,” adds Carol Marlow, president and managing director of Cunard Lines, “this voyage sold out quicker than the QE2’s final voyage, which sold out in 36 minutes in June 2007.” This speaks volumes for the faith that loyal passengers have not only in the Cunard® name, but also for the resilience of the cruise sector in this economic downturn.
Costing about £365 million ($752 million), Queen Elizabeth – when she is launched in October 2010 – will be the second-largest Cunard® ship ever built and the third new ocean liner to be introduced by Cunard® in the past six years. Named after the first Queen Elizabeth, one of Cunard’s greatest ships, the new Queen Elizabeth will echo her predecessor’s grand interior in décor and style, but with a modern twist. When guests board the new vessel, the Grand Lobby will impress with a magnificent Art Deco chandelier suspended three floors above as well as cantilevered balconies and a massive twodeck-high original artwork on the grand
staircase. The lobby itself will be finished in light mahogany timber and cool marble. The Art Deco feel will continue in the stunning Britannia® Restaurant, designed to be one of the most impressive main dining rooms afloat, featuring a sweeping staircase and decorative backlit ceiling. More Art Deco pieces, murals, mosaics, marbles, marquetry, leaded and sand-blasted decorative glass, artwork by contemporary British artists, and stylish >

Of the nine categories of accommodation, the most salubrious are the four grand suites and two master suites, all named after the six Cunard® commodores who have received knighthoods for their service to the industry. As on her predecessors Queen Mary 2® and Queen Victoria®, the new liner will have Grill Suites that will represent the ultimate suite accommodation on board. Both the Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants will offer single seating with guests able to choose their preferred time to dine. Adjacent to the restaurants will be a private lounge and bar exclusively for Grill guests with a resident concierge to attend to their needs. The Britannia® Club will cater for top-grade balcony guests with the main Britannia® Restaurant for deluxe guests.

Other dining options include the palm-filled Garden Lounge... Lido Restaurant, which will serve regional cuisines and an extensive buffet; Café Carinthia …and a Golden Lion pub. Other dining options include the palm-filled Garden Lounge, inspired by the greenhouses at celebrated Kew Gardens in London; Lido Restaurant, which will serve regional cuisines and an extensive buffet; Café Carinthia for tea, coffee and pastries; and a cosy Golden Lion pub serving traditional English pub-style food. No Cunard® cruise would be complete without traditional English afternoon teas of dainty finger sandwiches and fresh scones with jam and cream. These daily spreads will be served in the two-deck Queens Room surrounded
Entertainment will be a highlight of life at sea on the new vessel where the impressive threetiered Royal Court Theatre will accommodate guests for West End-style productions and worldclass entertainers. Guests can sip champagne and nibble petit fours or chocolates in private, operastyle boxes on the upper level and ring for service on their individual velvet bell-pulls. Perhaps more than any other line, Cunard® means frocking up for elegant dinners, dapper bow ties and smoking jackets for men and in general embracing a genteel way of life perhaps
thought forgotten. There will be country house parties, Ivor Novello-inspired piano evenings, jitterbug, jive and ballroom dancing, a Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, supper clubs with dining and dancing under the stars. There will also be a games deck for croquet, paddle tennis and traditional British bowls and a Midships Bar that will pay homage to the original Queen Elizabeth with lots of memorabilia. The Play Zone and The Zone will feature the latest equipment for children while the Cunard® Royal Spa and Fitness Centre will offer spa and beauty treatments with gym and cardiovascular fitness equipment nearby. The maiden voyage of the 90,400-ton luxury liner will be a 13-night journey to Iberia and the Canary Islands visiting ports such as Vigo, Lisbon, Cádiz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas and Funchal. Queen Elizabeth’s maiden season will also offer a 14-night ‘Mediterranean Premiere’, an 18-night ‘Aegean Introduction’, a five-night ‘Gallic Debut’, a second voyage to Iberia and the Canaries and a 22-night Christmas voyage to the Caribbean. ■

ink mansions with blue swimming pools, stylish boutiques, palm trees and sleek automobiles, rollerblading blondes and strutting superstars: thanks to movies and television, we all have snapshots in our heads of Los Angeles, a city that seems to blur the lines between reality and fantasy. This is the epicentre of consumerism, full of shopping malls and funky stores alike, and the place where the American dream is writ large in white letters across a hillside. But Hollywood is only one aspect of this marvellous city, which has a sunny climate, eclectic neighbourhoods and a surprisingly generous dose of culture. For cruise passengers, Los Angeles is the gateway to the Mexican Riviera, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as the South Pacific and Asia. Port of Los Angeles is at San Pedro, some 30 kilometres south of downtown LA. Vast shipping terminals stretch along some 69 kilometres of waterfront, and its World Cruise Center welcomes 1.2 million passengers a year. Three ships – Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Star and Royal Caribbean International’s Mariner of the Seas – have homeports here. It is well worth making the time to spend a few days in Los Angeles either pre- or postcruise. Starting with the main attractions, as you head downtown from the port you’ll pass by the likes of the Natural History Museum and University of Southern California. Most
tours make their first stop at one of LA’s newest attractions, the world-class Walt Disney Concert Hall, whose spectacular steel architecture winks in the Californian sun. Attend a concert here by the Los Angeles Philharmonic if you can; the acoustics are as wonderful as the building itself. Los Angeles is a city made up of distinct neighbourhoods, which means the downtown area isn’t the hub of the action. Still, this is where savvy locals look for bargains in the Fashion District and Chinatown. Grand Central Market brings a taste of Latin America with its fresh produce, spices and specialty restaurants, while Olvera Street sells just about everything made south of the border, adding mariachi bands to the lively mix at weekends.
For cruise passengers, Los Angeles is the gateway to the Mexican Riviera, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as the South Pacific and Asia. Once you’ve explored Olvera Street, then it’s hooray for Hollywood. Hollywood Boulevard is the place to inspect the stars of the Walk of Fame and pick up some memorabilia, such as old movie posters. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is the scene of many a premier and features the hand- and footprints of stars on the pavement outside. The Kodak Theatre, home of the Oscars ceremony, is at the intersection with

Highland Street and is actually part of a huge entertainment complex known as Hollywood & Highland Center that includes both souvenir stores and top-end fashion boutiques. Save some of your energy for bohemian Melrose Avenue nearby, which has rather peculiar clothing shops and plenty of funky fashion. Then move over to pedestrian-friendly West Hollywood, which has a good congregation of nightclubs, restaurants, art galleries and shops. Who can resist strolling along Sunset Boulevard, which features everything from gigantic music stores to strip malls, strip joints and movie studios? Practically every club (The Viper Room), hotel (Chateau Marmont) and other building along Sunset Strip is associated with the movie industry. Another must-see is Farmers Market, at the eastern end of West 3rd Street. It has been here since the 1930s, starting with farmers selling their produce off the back of trucks and since morphing into more than a hundred stalls and restaurants around its landmark Clock Tower. Then there’s Beverly Hills, the celebrated neighbourhood of the rich and famous. Rodeo Drive scarcely needs an introduction. You may need a platinum card to shop here, but that doesn’t need to prevent you wandering around for a stickybeak. Every swank designer in the world seems to be represented, from Prada and Bvlgari to Ralph Lauren and Tiffany. One of the most famous shopping moments in movie
Vincent Thomas Bridge
history was the scene in Pretty Woman in which a snobbish store manager snubs Julia Roberts – only to realise later that she has turned away the chance of some serious sales. The scene was filmed on location at Boulmiche, a fashion store just a few steps away from Rodeo Drive. As for Wilshire Boulevard, it’s the place to head for department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York and Neiman Marcus. There is plenty more to see and do in Los Angeles. Universal Studios is a major drawcard, and after a tour there you can explore the adjacent CityWalk’s shops and restaurants. This popular theme park has animated shows and simulations of everything from an earthquake to an attack by Jaws, as well as artefacts from famous movies including Back to the Future, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park. If you’re staying in the city, the fabled beach suburbs of Santa Monica and Malibu are also worth exploring on a sunny afternoon. Walking along the much-filmed Santa Monica Pier brings an odd feeling of déjà vu and has
several attractions, including a Ferris wheel, aquarium and roller-coaster. Main Street is well worth walking for its interesting, slightly offbeat boutiques and more general shopping fare, and has a relaxed, beachside atmosphere that seems a world away from Rodeo Drive. As you head along the coast to Malibu you pass the multimillion-dollar beachfront ‘cottages’ of movie directions and actors. Sit on the pier and gaze over the beach where Baywatch was filmed, and where the bold and the beautiful still strut their stuff: California cool as the sun sets. ■

Norwegian Epic, known as “F3”
SHIP WITHIN A SHIP Norwegian Cruise Line’s magnificent first post-Panamax ship redefines the notion of Freestyle Cruising. WORDS: M.T. SCHWARTZMAN
O
riginally it was known by its code name, “F3”, shorthand for the third generation of new ship built for Freestyle Cruising. As such, it would have all the features that are the hallmark of Freestyle Cruising – an amazing array of restaurants and dining rooms, a wide variety of accommodation and a full range of onboard activities. But Norwegian Epic promises to be much more than that: at 153,000 gross registered tons and carrying 4,200 passengers based on double occupancy, this will be Norwegian Cruise Line’s first post-Panamax ship, a class of vessel too big to fit through the Panama Canal. Such size presents the line with unprecedented opportunities to expand and redefine the very notion of Freestyle Cruising. Firstly, the ship offers a new concept in cabins; dubbed New Wave staterooms, they
feature curved walls and recessed LED lighting to create a new look and feel. A reconfigured bathroom design maximises the use of space with a separate shower stall, toilet and vanitytop sink. The cabin mix will be the richest of any NCL ship, with all outside staterooms equipped with private balconies – 1,419 in all. Norwegian Epic also offers a range of niche accommodation, including three types of spa cabin and a new category of inside cabin, known as studio accommodation. Described by the line as having a “den-like feel”, its most distinctive feature is a large, round window looking onto the interior corridor with customised lighting effects that mirror different stages of the day. A control panel allows occupants to select a lighting effect to suit their mood. Guests staying in studio cabins may use a communal two-deck lounge known as the
Living Room, which has comfy seating, bigscreen TVs and bar service. Meanwhile, the ship-within-a-ship courtyard accommodation, introduced on the line’s Jewel class of liner, is expanded on Norwegian Epic to span two decks comprising 60 suites and villas. Guests staying in these cabins have exclusive access to a courtyard complex, which includes a pool, two spas, gym, saunas, sun deck, indoor/ outdoor bar-nightclub and a concierge lounge. Nightspots offer one-of-a-kind experiences inspired by the world’s nightlife hotspots – Miami’s South Beach, Spain’s Ibiza, the French Riviera and Las Vegas. Each offers a variety of entertainment, day and night. And Norwegian Epic is revolutionary for what she doesn’t have – the liner will have no traditional show lounge and the space will be used by various venues to redefine onboard entertainment. > WINTER 2009 27

Passengers will be offered fur coats, gloves and hats to keep them warm as they sail the tropical seas. Passengers staying in courtyard-area cabins have complimentary access to the top-deck “Uber Bar”, Halo, where the theme is “the best of the best”. Offering cocktails and private gaming, including baccarat and blackjack, the bar caters to refined tastes and guests may purchase quality works of art or jewellery here. Among Norwegian Epic’s other “party playgrounds” is Spice H20, an adults-only aft pool area infused with Latin and Asian influences, pulsating music and a giant LED video screen. The menu offers takeaway Chinese cuisine, and an eclectic dinner menu not found elsewhere on the liner. Freestyle Dining on Epic offers two main dining rooms, inspired by the world’s leading gastrocapitals, plus another 15 dining options. These include an upscale steakhouse; the signature French Restaurant; Teppanyaki; Italian; sushi; freshly prepared pasta dishes and an extensive salad bar. And for Villa guests who desire a more intimate dining experience there is the exclusive Epic Club and Courtyard Grill. Those who have previously sailed on NCL’s Norwegian Pearl or Norwegian Gem will be familiar with Bliss, a lounge and nightclub that features a bowling alley. On Norwegian Epic, Bliss presents NCL’s “White Hot Night” dance party, where revellers are encouraged to wear white and feather boas (offered for sale). Norwegian Epic will sail year-round to the Caribbean on seven-day roundtrip cruises from Miami beginning in the northern summer of 2010. A western Caribbean itinerary includes stops in Costa Maya, Roatan and Cozumel. An eastern Caribbean alternative calls at St Maarten, St Thomas and Nassau in the Bahamas. ■

Passenger Review | FROM THE BRIDGE
MYSTIC MEKONG Justine Sealey, manager of Ramsgate Travel Service, took a memorable cruise along the Mekong from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap on board RV Orient Pandaw. WORDS: TONI EATTS
Which ship were you on? For seven magical nights we cruised on RV Orient Pandaw, which is small and intimate. We were not pulling into ports with wharf facilities. In most cases the boat pulled into a cleared area where they could tie up and we disembarked via a gangplank. What do you think of RV Orient Pandaw? The ship totally exceeded my expectations. It was comfortable and the crew and food were outstanding. It was small enough for the crew to know everyone on board and the atmosphere among the passengers was friendly. Even when we were ashore, people were looking out for each other.
What did you enjoy most? The local people were certainly a highlight. Every day as we travelled along the Mekong we were greeted with cheers and smiles.
blowing, a gin and tonic in one hand, juggling a book and camera with the other as I watched the world pass by.
What was your cabin like? The cabins are spacious and very well thought out, with drawers under the beds to utilise room. The bathroom was generous in size. Most cabins have twin beds, although there are two cabins at the front of the ship on the upper deck that have double beds.
How were the meals? Breakfast and lunch were always a buffet with an Ă la carte option. There were cereals, fruits, cheese and meats, pastries and breads. On the table there was a menu with pancakes, congee, waffles and eggs any way you wanted. Lunch was a selection of freshly made soup, salads and breads plus an additional menu of dishes.
Did you have a favourite spot on the ship? Yes, sitting on a padded steamer chair, up on the covered sundeck with the fans gently
What about evening dining? The dining room has an open-seating policy with one dining time. This gave people the > WINTER 2009 31

> chance to move around and dine with others. It made for really interesting conversation as the people who were on our cruise were all very well travelled. All soft drinks and local alcoholic drinks including beer were included and the price of international drinks was reasonable. There was an alcoholic cocktail of the day that was also complimentary. Was there entertainment? One night we had a Vietnamese musical performance, another night there was a folkloric Cambodian dance performance by local dancers from Phnom Penh and on the other nights there were movie presentations about the areas we were travelling through, for example, Indochine and The Killing Fields. One night the ship stayed in Phnom Penh, allowing passengers the opportunity to go ashore and eat in one of the many restaurants in this city as well as visit the night markets. Did you try any of the onboard facilities? I had three massages, which were very reasonable at only US$40 for an hour. I didn’t manage to try the reflexology, which is done on the sundeck so that you can admire the view. Tell us about a highlight of the trip. It’s probably the visits to places that you can’t get to when you do a land-based itinerary of Vietnam and Cambodia that really stand out the most. This includes the river communities we visited, such as one village that specialises in making rice paper and other rice products. We also visited a weaving village and a floating fish farm. Is there anything else you enjoyed? The colourful port areas, floating markets, and the ever-changing scenery. Something I will never forget is travelling around a floating village in a boat, handing out stickers and little

Australian souvenirs such as clip-on koala bears. The look of excitement and joy on the children’s faces was immeasurable. Who would you recommend this cruise to? It would suit those who just want to sit on the deck and relax watching the world pass by, keen photographers and people who have travelled through Asia previously. It’s perfect for people who say, ‘I have been to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi) and Cambodia (Phnom Penh)’ – as this is a truly different way to experience the friendliness of the people without having to travel on bumpy and uncomfortable roads in buses and moving hotels every night.■

There’s a lot of outside space and an open bridge policy. A few cabins have balconies. She is 111 metres long and 17 metres wide and is stabilised. There are 100 crew members. There’s a helicopter deck and most excursions in remote areas are carried out by the ship’s 12 Zodiacs . Tipping: Gratuities are not expected on Hapag-Lloyd vessels. Currency: The Euro is used on both vessels. Language: Although the vessels have largely Germanspeaking crew, everyone speaks English, usually very fluently. osta Cruises launches three new ships this year, bringing its fleet of luxury ocean liners to 15.
