POP TO THE SHOPS

Discover a quirky side to the High Street

Balham shopping is a bit like Balham life: vibrant, eclectic and full of surprises. You can find the freshest cut flowers, buy yourself a new guitar and grab everything you need for your own Spanish tapas night, all while you’re taking your bike in for a service. Oh, and in case you don’t know your Bordeaux from your Burgundy, Balham’s independent wine merchants can point you in the right direction.

FOOD IS LIFE

“Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join us. Life is so endlessly delicious” If you’re eating out, there’s Milk for the fashionistas to see and be seen, Bertie & Boss for the Mums to steal a few self-indulgent minutes, Arlo’s for perfectly grilled steaks and Meza for healthy Lebanese cuisine. But every now and then only one thing will do. Dirtyburger. Don’t worry, we won’t tell.

Food Lover’s Paradise The array of local restaurants and delis in Balham will inspire even the most decadent Instafeed, but there’s even more to discover If you look hard enough. There’s an artisanal butcher for rare-breed cuts, freshly baked bread, a health food superstore for all things organic and a weekly Farmer’s Market to get those taste buds going. You just have to find room in the fridge.

OPEN SPACES

An uncommon stroll Most city-dwellers’ exposure to greenery doesn’t go much further than the salad section in the local supermarket, but Balham has something quite remarkable; it sits in the centre of Wandsworth, Clapham and Tooting Commons. Perfect for nature lovers, for fitness fanatics or just a gentle stroll.

What is a haven for fitness freaks, family strollers and seekers of tranquillity on one day, can resonate with the sounds of some of the most famous dance DJs in the world on the next. In Balham you can dip in and out whenever it suits you and we’re not just talking about the Tooting Bec Lido.

Know your Old Cuban from your Old Fashioned You can eat in Nepal on Thursday night, Japan on Friday night and Jamaica on Saturday night. In fact, you can pretty much travel the world with a knife, fork and chopsticks. But no great night is complete without great drinks in great company and that’s something that Balham has in abundance. Leaving you just to decide whether it’s shaken or stirred.

The Balham buzz You can go out, eat out, wile out and laugh out loud with Balham’s eclectic selection of venues. The Bedford, a Balham institution, attracts huge names with The Clash playing there, as well as U2, and a little known singer called Ed Sheeran. The Exhibit, Balham’s self-procliamed “Youth Club for Adults”, combines a gallery, cinema, restaurant, bar, club and more into one place. If that’s not enough, you can pop down to The Owl for classic cocktails and some impressive mixology.

Genuinely friendly. Genuinely Balham The best thing about Balham is that it isn’t trying too hard to be anything except… Balham. It’s a community of people who are genuine, down to earth and inclusive. They want quality but also understand value. They stick together, but welcome guests with open arms. They value their independence but would never do without family, and thrive in the city but like to hug the occasional tree. They’re personal, unpretentious and honest.
