Edge Hill is a warm and friendly University in the North West of England with a beautiful and modern campus and will be sure to make you feel at home, even if you’re just visiting for an Open Day.

This document has been written entirely by students. Everything comes from the fingertips of current students to the eyes of you the reader. It means that prospective students get a real understanding of what it is to study at Edge Hill University, both the good and the notso-good. If you want to compare it to anything, it is like the “user reviews” section of an online shop (for example Amazon) compared to the “Manufacturer’s Description” that is the University’s proper prospectus and website. However we must be quick to point out that the Alternative Prospectus is NOT designed to replace the University’s prospectus. Throughout your time at Edge Hill the Students’ Union is the voice of students It is here to ensure you have a great time and to help you get the support you need to succeed at University. Every student is automatically a member of the Students’ Union. This means the Students’ Union belongs to you: if it’s not doing what you want it to, you have the power to change it. Students are at the heart of our decision making process and we work on what students want to see improved in any aspect of their University experience. Every year students elect four Sabbatical Officers who are responsible for the work and direction of the Union on behalf of all Edge Hill students. It is their responsibility to ensure that the Union and University make the best possible decisions for Edge Hill students. They work alongside a full time staff team who help them to achieve their aims.

We are also here to entertain you! We run your Freshers’ Week in September and put on a whole host of events to help you settle into University life. We also run the clubs and societies; a great way for you to do something different and meet new people. And since we are a charity any money we make goes straight back into the Union to help improve our services to you. There are tons of ways to get involved in the Union from joining a club or society, helping to run a society, becoming a Course Rep (and represent the views of students on your course, or helping to write a page of the Alternative Prospectus!) How was this Alternative Prospectus put together? This prospectus was written entirely by students – but how did we manage this? Basically we used student leaders from across the University. We used Course Representatives (or “Reps” for short), members of the Student Council and the Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers as authors. What are Course Reps?

Every year of every course at Edge Hill University has a Course Representative (or “Rep” for short). It is the Rep’s job to listen to student opinions on how the course is running and feed that back to staff. Reps are elected by the students on their course every year and attend meetings with staff to have the opinions of students heard. Course Reps wrote the main bulk of the prospectus – the courses.

The Student Council is the Students’ Union’s equivalent of the House of Commons and is the “sovereign body” of the Union. It is where the direction of the Union is discussed and decided and where you can turn student issues into action! There are 12 Student Council positions available, including everything from Chair of Student Council to Entertainments Officer. Members of the Student Council wrote the introductory sections on the University as a whole.

The Sabbatical Officers are students who are elected every year to lead the Students’ Union. Edge Hill University accommodates approximately 1000 students in one of five different types of accommodation on campus… About 700 rooms are self-catered, with around 300 catered and around half of all rooms have en-suite facilities. There’s two different types of contract: a 38 week contract, running from September to June, and a 40 week contract, running from September to July. Prices for academic year 2011/12 range from £56 to £97 per week depending on the hall of residence you choose. A 5% discount if available if you pay for the whole fixed term in full on or before ‘Welcome Sunday’ when you’ll move in. And (unless you’re in Founders or Graduates Court) if you want a TV you’ll need to bring one, and also get a TV license. CONFUSED!??? Yeah, we thought so! So here’s the Alternative Prospectus guide to University accommodation at Edge Hill… First things first:

the common things between all the Halls. They’re all a great place to meet friends in first year- some of these people could be your friends for life! There’s always loads of things to do in Halls and, because all the halls are campus based, most things are in easy reach, from shops/ the bar to the Library and lectures/lecturers! Being on campus also means that the Halls are reasonably safe and secure, although you still need to be careful and vigilant as usual.

The biggest difference is whether you choose self-catered or catered. If you’re catered you’ll get a card that you can use anywhere on campus to get your food, if you choose self-catered it will probably be cheaper, and you’ll share a

kitchen with other students and have to make your own food (obviously). The other main differences are whether you get an en-suite room or you share with other students, and also how new your halls are. How are Halls allocated?

Priority is given to those from further away or those with disabilities. However the University can’t guarantee accommodation for all first years or all students who live further away. So it’s therefore on a first-come-first-served basis (so get your application form in quick! Register on the Hi website: http://hi.edgehill.ac.uk and then submit your accommodation form as soon as you can!) If you don’t get your first choice of Halls you may be given an alternative, but this may be a completely different type of room (e.g. catered when you asked for self-catered). You need to think about whether you want to take the University up on this offersome students will move on from their hall, giving you a space, but, again, this can’t be guaranteed… The University will provide assistance for those students who don’t get on-campus accommodation to get it in Ormskirk. However this is difficult as the University currently doesn’t give details of “recommended” landlords (just gives you a list) and it’s down to you to organise it before the start of the year. The Accommodation Team will be on hand to advise you at any point. And even if you don’t get on-campus accommodation there’s still all the opportunities to make loads of friends off campus as well (see the section on “Ormskirk” for more.) Joshua Edmonds

Science Secondary Education with QTS Halls of Residence Officer

A lot of students choose to live in or around Ormskirk in the second and third years of their undergraduate degree, and some do so in their first year at University as well. There are a good amount of decent landlords and student houses in Ormskirk and we recommend students use the University’s Accommodation Team list of landlords, despite the fact that this does not list “recommended” landlords, just lists all landlords available.

Ormskirk is a friendly market town approximately 13 miles north of Liverpool city centre, set in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. Edge Hill is a ten minute walk outside of Ormskirk town centre on St Helens Road, or is just a two minute ride on the free and frequent University Bus.

In many ways Ormskirk is an ordinary market town – it has all the local amenities you might expect, from supermarkets to local shops to pubs to bars to nightclubs to restaurants and as many hairdressers as you can shake a stick at. But Ormskirk also has a large market twice a week (Thursdays and Saturdays) and is surrounded by beautiful countryside (including the Martin Mere bird sanctuary) and local tourist attractions such as Parbold Hill.

Living in Ormskirk can be a great way to make fantastic student friends whilst also being a part of a local community. There’s no doubt that it is different from living in Halls, but there’s a reason why most second and third year students choose to live away from Halls – there’s more independence, it’s cheaper, and you’re actually living right next to all the things you need.

Ormskirk also has very good transport links across the North West, with Liverpool city centre a half hour train ride away (trains every 15 minutes), trains to Preston every hour and reasonably easy access to towns and cities further afield, such as Manchester and Chester. Buses to the local seaside resort of Southport are frequent if you want a good day out.

The University has loads of facilities either to help you as a student or to make your life more enjoyable at Edge Hill… The Student Information Centre (commonly called the “SIC”) is where all the University’s student support have their offices… If you ever have a query about something and are not quite sure where to go, I always find the main reception desk in the SIC to be a good place to start! The SIC is based next to the main building in between the performing arts building and the Library. The building houses a great deal of services for students ranging from accommodation and finance, to academic registry. All of these departments have students’ best interests at heart, and they do a pretty damn good job!

students. The Rose theatre puts on numerous performances throughout the year, from drama to literature, standup comedy, dance, physical theatre, comedy, music and theatre for children and families. And with the Short Cuts Cinema you can always catch up with the latest movie offerings. The Learning Innovation Centre (LINC) is just on the left as you walk towards the Faculty of Health building. It has loads of computers, a brand new High Definition TV studio, editing facilities and multimedia production facilities. The building has 24/7 access (just swipe your student ID card), which makes it the ideal place on campus for finishing off those next day assignments through the night if you need to! It is absolutely key ) to all the media students but is a major C N resource for all students. One of the departments in the SIC is the Employability department, which is obviously something that many of you will be interested in when you’re choosing to come to University! So you’ll be happy to hear that Edge Hill has some excellent results in this area… the latest results produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency place Edge Hill as second placed in England for graduate employment in 2009, beaten only by the University of Surrey. And the one key thing to remember after your few years studying at University level is the question: “will I get a job after this?” If you’re looking at Edge Hill, the figures suggest you might! Drama/ Dance/ Performance students will be particularly interested in the Rose Theatre, as will many other

The Library building combines a library with IT and study support facilities, with access to thousands of books, journals, and online resources. The building also provides more than 160 work stations and 500 study spaces which include bookable rooms and a social learning space on the bottom floor. Opening times vary throughout the year, with extended access available during key assessment periods. Overall the University’s academic facilities are very good and it’s great to see the University are listening to what students’ want- such as increasing opening hours of the Library and LINC buildings in recent years. Team Edge Hill There are around 40 teams in 16 sports for students who want to compete against other universities with “Team Edge Hill”. In addition to this over 40 students last year represented the University as individuals. We also have close links with other facilities off-campus, for example Ormskirk Rugby Club. Team Edge Hill has had some great successes in the past couple of years. Edge Hill performs well in Rugby League with our 1st team qualifying for the Super 8 and then finishing 3rd in the league and 3rd in the championships in 2010. For the first time we also had a team entrance for Futsal who went on to reach the quarter finals of the championship, only to get knocked out of the competition by the eventual champions.

This year we have ten teams in a position to be promoted up a league in their various sports, which is a record for Team Edge Hill, and goes to show how far sport has come at Edge Hill since Team Edge Hill started 18 months ago. At the end of each year we hold a sport Awards to recognise the achievements of our students through sport for both Team Edge Hill and our Intramural league. Being part of a university society is definitely one of the best ways to meet likeminded people and have great ‘could only happen at university’ experiences Societies are basically groups of students who get together to share a common interest. Societies at Edge Hill have grown considerably in the last 12 months, with the additions of popular activities such as cheerleading, “philosotea” (philosophy with tea!), Street Dance and the first Edge Hill Choir taking the total number of societies to fifteen. Edge Hill Outdoor Club, which only started three years ago, are now 4th in the GB Raft Series for White-water Rafting. What started as a group of friends is now a society with over 50 members. From murder mystery nights run by the Christian Union, though to weekly climbs organised by the Outdoor Club, throw in some street dance, a bit of Table Top gaming and a cup or tea or two with the philosotea society followed by being thrown around by the cheerleaders, Societies make sure that there’s always something going on at Edge Hill.

And if there isn’t something you’re interested in, starting a society at Edge Hill couldn’t be easier. Simply find ten people who are also interested, call into the Students’ Union, fill in a little form and then get going! This means that the Students’ Union will help with funding- in the past this has meant anything from trips to London, costumes for a drama show, 200 plastic ducks and a tea urn, to name but a few! The best time to join a society is during the Sports and Societies Fair during Freshers Week- every single society should be there. It only costs £3 to get a societies membership and then you can join as many societies as you wish. Some societies charge a little more to be involved due to the additional costs involved but others are like philosotea and only expect you to bring a mug and maybe some biscuits to share! As well as the club nights in the past few years there have also been pub quizzes, live music nights and “Edge Factor” (geddit?) competitions which have always gone down well with Edge Hill students. During Freshers a Family Fun Day is always planned to give students with children the opportunity to show off the place they are going to be studying at. Throughout the year there are also charity events for Children in Need and Comic Relief which students are encouraged to get involved in and help raise money.

Freshers Week in September is the highlight of the Students’ Union events calendar, and 2010 saw the biggest range of events, from live music, film nights, comedy, rockaoke, pirate party and a silent disco. Not forgetting the biggest night of Freshers is now legendary ‘Liverpool Takeover’ where all Edge Hill students come together in one of Liverpool’s best nightclubs to party together until the early hours! Following Freshers week the Students’ Union runs a weekly club night off campus, this year with Elements in Wigan being the chosen nightclub. Each Monday the club host different events with party games, dressing up themes and prizes to be won. Transport is included in the £6 ticket price and after a night in the club everyone gets free toast to munch on the journey home.

As well as weekly events there are also major events which populate the Students’ Union annual calendar. The Sports Awards are hosted every year to celebrate and congratulate teams and individuals who have performed well over the previous 12 months. The Graduation Ball is also hosted by the Student’s Union and gives graduating students the opportunity to celebrate their time at Edge Hill, with a three course meal and some great entertainment. The event is always held locally and has in the past been at the world-famous Aintree Racecourse, DW Stadium in Wigan and most recently the Floral Hall in Southport. However a problem with Unistats is that sometimes data is unavailable or isn’t specific to the course you are researching (there’s numerous reasons for this). What’s special about your course? It is a relatively new course with the first ever year students graduating last year. The course is different from other Universities in the fact that it isn’t only accounting modules we study, we get a background in business, economics and business law. This gives you a better understanding of the historical background to businesses and also a good insight in how they work. It provides you the basis and knowledge to do well in whatever field of study in your accountancy module you chose to specialise in, whether it be taxation, auditing or business law. You can also gain exemptions from some of your professional exams with the completion of your degree

Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? I was worried about being so far away from home, and what if University wasn’t for me. But I fell in love with the place and soon settled in. Everyone is in the same situation as you. The campus has a relaxed atmosphere (with the lake and the ducks!) and the surrounding area is amazing. Ormskirk has a very relaxed nature to it.

The course can be the most exciting and enjoyable process, as long as you’re truly passionate about it - you’ll work in groups, as a creative, a producer, an academic. When I first came here, my brother joked about Edge Hill being Hogwarts, and to an extent it’s true (not in the sense that there are courses about Wizardry)… Few people have heard of Ormskirk, let alone the university. But once they see the place there are a few oohs and ahhs - it is a scenic place afterall.

Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? If you’re enrolling onto the course, expect that the core theory modules are not completely Advertising based (it’s a Media course, after all). Be prepared to have to apply what you learn to your practice. Any Photoshop/art experience will be your rubber dingy in this sea of education...

Where can you go/ what can you do with your course? Between all the crying over not being in University anymore, I hope that with relentless persistence I can get a job in any Advertising firm or Media company. Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? The biology course at Edge Hill is a very practical-based course. There’s a lot of field work in the first year, and you often go out into the local area to study ecosystems. It’s fun, but it can sometimes get annoying when it’s cold and you still have to go out. Edge Hill was actually my clearance choice, but I feel lucky to have ended up at such a good Uni. The campus is really nice, and all the people I’ve met have been really friendly.

What’s special about your course? The Joint Honours degree in Sociology and Criminology gives you two disciplines and gives both a general out look on society and an in depth knowledge of aspects within society. Studying this subject at University is like nothing I have encountered before. You’re taught to question everything you see and be critical. It’s great! Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? One of the main things I was bothered about was would I be good enough to meet the University standard. I had passed Sociology at A Level with only a C and what scared me the most was that I would not meet the expected grades. However, due to the excellent staff and student support I conquered this fear and am now aiming for a 1st in both disciplines of my course.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? The course allows me to explore my interests in much more detail. The Ormskirk campus has good transport links to Liverpool and Manchester that allows me to see performances regularly. The tutors are passionate about the course and have strong links to outside companies who often come to Edge Hill to perform.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special about your course? The course offers a variety of modules to give you a sense of the different ways in which dance is used, for example in teaching, dance writing and choreography. This is unlike any other course I have seen.

Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? I was worried about attending lectures and practical lessons as I suffer with hearing difficulties. I was nervous about feeling stupid if I answered questions incorrectly because I could not hear, and I didn’t know what additional support I could receive. It was only when I went and spoke to the team in the Student Information Centre (SIC) who helped me fill out my Disabled Students Allowance forms that I got the support that I needed. What’s special about your course? The guest lecturer programme is a special addition to the Media aspect of the course as it is great to work with professionals from the industry. Trips are also organised within Drama to go London to see some performances, Media offer the chance to go to New York as well as additional smaller trips.

I loved English at school so this seemed like a natural choice for me. I chose Edge Hill as it’s in an excellent location with very good links to public transport as well as the facility to park on site. Edge Hill was a name that many people recommended to me when I was considering my choices.

What’s special about your course? The English degree is far more varied than I expected and my first year has proved to give me a brilliant foundation in both language and literature. I have discovered that I enjoy topics I would otherwise never have had the chance to study and it has already taught me skills that would be invaluable in many different careers. Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? Being a mature student I was concerned about being the only ‘older’ person in lectures and seminars, however I was really pleased to meet numerous other mature students. I was also worried that being out of education for so long (16 years!) that I would struggle with the workload, however the tutors have been so encouraging and within weeks I was confident that I had made the right choice in Edge Hill and my course.

What is the teaching and assessment like? You are ultimately responsible for your own learning and development. Studying at degree level requires you to be self disciplined and make sure you keep on top of your reading and work outside of lectures and seminars. Tutors are always on hand when you need support or guidance, and even fellow students are a brilliant resource! Assessments involve written assignments, exams and presentations as a group and an individual. Again, there is always plenty of support leading up to assessments to ensure you are on the right track.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? I chose to study at Edge Hill partly because this meant that I could live at home, but also because one of my friends had recommended it to me, citing the campus and the support she had been given by tutors and fellow students throughout the 3 year course.

I decided to study English Language for several reasons. Firstly, and I think most importantly, it was a subject which I had really enjoyed all the way through my academic life, from infant school to A-Level. I had also studied Modern Foreign Languages at A level and got a minor degree in French, so languages have always been a passion of mine, but I figured, why learn anymore languages when there is so much more to learn about my own.

What’s special about your course? The relationship between students and tutors is unique, in that the course involves a considerable amount of talk and discussion, all of which is a two way street. Due to the size of the seminar groups, there is room for everyone to express their opinions. However, you can only get out of it what you put in so participation is key. This was something I was most apprehensive about at first but I learned very quickly that we were all in it together.

One of the first things people ask me when I say I’m studying English is, “why you doing that you already know it”? You soon realise though that just speaking the language does not mean you know anything about it. I would guarantee in the first week of the course you will learn something you did not already know. I started this course having not studied English for several years and thought it had been me out of touch with today’s curriculum, but everybody starting in first year said they were learning something completely different to what they had done at A-Level.

The department is friendly, and the staff are enthusiastic about their subject which creates an environment where people want to learn and are supported in doing so.

Where can you go/ what can you do with your course? The skills learnt through undertaking an English degree can be applied across a multitude of careers. Yes, there are some who go on to be librarians, but English degrees also illustrate that you have certain skills that would be invaluable to companies. For example: time keeping, maintaining structured arguments, presentation skills. Many companies have graduate schemes and, with an English Degree, the possibilities of these are more widely accessible - English can be used across a greater number of sectors than more ‘specialised’ degree courses. Many people on English courses go on to complete PGCE, or go on to further academic endeavours such as a Masters or PhD, as well as writing both creatively and critically.

This course is great if you are interested in a career in the Film or Television industry because it teaches you all aspects from camera to sound, scriptwriting to editing. Film students are also generally very creative so we bounce ideas off each other quite regularly, and use each other to be even more creative.

The main thing I worried about was “will I make friends?” This was not an issue after a couple of days with my flatmates on campus and people on my course. I am lucky because two students I live with are on the same course so I had friends in that first lecture, but everyone was kind enough to speak to each other and teachers allowed us to integrate with ice-breaker games and general discussions about the things we love most.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? Edge Hill has one of the UK’s top Geography departments! It’s up-to-date with the employment requirements of a lot of current companies, and geography also has great lecturers who treat students like friends and build a strong relationship with you straight from freshers week. Geography at Edge Hill is based in an old ‘rustic’ building which is very cosy, just like classrooms at school! This means everyone knows everyone on their course, but away from the actual course, Edge Hill hosts a very modern and student-friendlily university.

What’s special about your course? There is an emphasis towards the digital aspects of geography, a huge advantage at graduate interviews. The lectures are also very friendly and make you feel very much an important part of the department in thoughts and issues. All staff in the department are very approachable and don’t talk down to you like a student but listen to you like an equal. Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? I was worried as I was coming to Edge Hill knowing no other students at all, although I was amazed at how friendly everyone on the course and around Uni were, it took me only hours to notice I wasn’t alone and the other people were coming to Uni in the same situation as I was.

What is the teaching and assessment like? The teaching is really good, groups are small enough for everyone to be able to input into lectures and develop relationships with their lecturers. What’s special about your course? The course is very carefully constructed course and, geographically speaking, it gives students a wide area of knowledge which is vital in the world today. Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? Yes. I was worried about settling in. However, staff encourage students to interact and work with different people and I have made many friends. I wish I had known about the Edge Ahead centre before I came to Edge Hill. They help you to write essays and help to carefully structure your essays. The help is there, and free, so my advice would definitely be to use it to your advantage!

What is the teaching and assessment like? The level of teaching in the Geography department is exceptional. With numerous lecturers undertaking their own private research along side their teaching duties you are guaranteed to receive the most up to date and high quality of teaching at all times. The assessments are challenging but more importantly varied. My course has not simply involved handing in essays time after time, instead I have been asked to produce presentations, play a part in assessed debates, create websites and videos and also complete exams.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? A law degree is a fantastic degree to have. The degree at Edge Hill University is a qualifying law degree; this means that it meets the minimum requirements required by the Law Society and the Bar Council for trainee solicitors or barristers. I chose this university because I work locally, live locally and in comparison living costs are cheap. Further to this I was impressed by the facilities and the continued development of the university and its facilities. What’s special about your course? The level of support provided by tutors is second to none. I have friends in other universities who are envious of the amount of time I get with my tutors. Moreover the quality of academic discussion that you can hold with peers and tutors alike is a great asset of a law degree at Edge Hill.

The course opens your eyes to a number of rights that you have that you would probably be unaware of if you had not studied law, (for example I now know my consumer rights and how to make sure I can return my clothes to Topshop!) The lecturers are all very friendly and approachable, and they are very helpful when giving feedback and aiding your study, if I email a lecturer with a problem, 99% of the time I’ll have a reply within a day. The assessment can sometimes be stressful, for example, when having numerous coursework assignments due at around the same time, I would advise prospective students to start the assignments early, giving you plenty of time!

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? I love Media and it’s what I always wanted to do. When I visited Edge Hill it was such a great campus with brilliant facilities and friendly people. And the tutors and lecturers are really enthusiastic and love to help. The campus is beautiful and Ormskirk has everything you need if you do need to grab anything. What’s special about your course? The Media tutors have worked in the industry and know what they’re talking about. They aren’t just spouting a load of recycled garbage from their days at university. They have lived it and many of the tutors have had major industry jobs and are published writers in specific areas.

The facilities are also really good. The “CMIST” building has plenty of computers for uploading footage and editing it. And there are three or four rooms with Apple Mac computers for editing your films or projects.

Before I came I was worried about meeting new people, mainly because I knew there were so many different types of people from over the world with different backgrounds… but after getting to Uni and meeting people it was just great. The amount of input that you have to your own learning experience is something I haven’t come across elsewhere. According to my mother, the determination shown through my college years have proven me a worthy student on a university course. What’s special about your course? My course requires students to not only fulfil the assignment brief of passing the course, but to develop f! taf holistically as a whole individual. The s e Th course that I am enrolled on allows me to be myself, discuss ideas and feelings which I class as personal and therefore develop my journey through university to suit my intended career path. Physical Education and School Sport is a single honours degree which does what it says on the tin – it gives you the knowledge and information of both Physical Education in school and sport in wider society. The course has two pathways (PE and School sport) which, along with key, core modules, you study in years 2 and 3. Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? I enjoy geography, and I want to be involved in an outdoor environmental job when I leave Uni. The extra geology modules sounded interesting so that’s why I chose the course. And Edge Hill offered the best course, with good field trips and an emphasis on employability and beneficial skills such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

What’s special about your course? The GIS training is not given at every university, Edge Hill is one of the only ones to include it and it is a valuable skill for a lot of Geography related jobs.

Were you worried about anything before you came? Is there anything you wish you had known? I was worried about not having any previous geology knowledge, but it was not necessary and the basics were covered in the first year. I wish I had known that the Geo.com module (that includes the GIS training) was not a module choice for the second year. It was disappointing as it was a compulsory module for the Physical and Human Geography students, so you don’t get quite as much GIS training in this course compared to its sister courses.

However, the way in which it was taught and who I was being taught by was important to me, as was the location in which I studied. Design and Technology is an important part of the curriculum, imagine teaching the next James Dyson, Vivienne Westwood or Gordon Ramsey. These people are also very important to the economy of this country, so you can help your country too. Children enjoy Design and Technology as a subject as it is more laid back and as pupils use there vocational skills, it does not matter if they can read or write English very well, they will be able to make a Dovetail joint or a loaf of bread. Job satisfaction is also a large part of the decision to become a design and technology teacher- pupils often make products that they are extremely proud of, which means that you’re proud too!

What’s special about your course? Design and Technology with QTS is a specialised course, it is not the same as for instance Mathematics. The manner in which the course is communicated is very friendly and personal. Need extra time for an assignment, ask the relevant tutors and no problem. Need a favour from a tutor, no problem- the staff on this course will bend over backwards to help you, nothing is too much for them... On this course you get to cover all aspects of Design and Technology. Resistant Materials. Product Design. Food Technology. Electronics. Textiles. A lot of different skills, you are bound to be good at least one of them.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? From a young age I have known that I wanted to teach young children and provide them with an exciting and interesting education. Edge Hill was the only university in the whole of the UK to offer me such a rich and interesting course in Early Years. It focuses specifically on children aged from birth to seven years old whereas other courses have a broader age range. Edge Hill’s campus is all together and feels very safe when walking around. The teaching styles are probably the most diverse out of all the courses at Edge Hill, because we have to learn the different learning styles that we will encounter when we go into school. What do other students or your friends think about your course? I think it’s fair to say that my friends on my course agree with me that the quality of our course is second to none. I am the course representative for my course, and have just been elected as the Faculty of Education Representative in the Union elections, so I get quite a lot of feedback from students about the course and of course there are going to be issues that come up along the way, but the tutors are always there to try and solve these.

What’s special about your course? The good thing about my course is that you get to study such a wide variety of things all at the same time, we study degree level biology, chemistry and physics as well as subject application and personal professional development, to develop us as teachers and to work towards the Qualified Teacher Status. We are very lucky to have such a great course, as it cuts out the usual route of having to spend an extra year doing a PGCE after getting a degree.

What were you worried about before you came? I was worried about the usual things… Would I make new friends? Would I cope with the work load?But mainly I was worried that as I had already attended a University where I had hated every minute of my time spent there, and would I feel the same at Edge Hill? Upon arriving to lectures on the first day, I wondered why on earth I had been worrying about things, I made new friends straight away and have loved every minute spent at Edge Hill so far.

What’s special about your course? The course is just what I was looking for, it’s part time and the University is linked with Shrewsbury College which is not far from where I live. The best thing about the course is I can still work and learn. There are other “campuses” in Ormskirk, the Wirral, and Holy Cross College, Bury.

As a mature student I was worried about meeting other mature students and generally just anxious because I didn’t know what to expect. What’s special about your course? Integrated Practice may be a full time degree but lectures are run over one day a week, allowing you to continue working in practice and/or time to study. The course modules are also quite broad as they cover subjects in both health and social related areas.

Some students have had issues with conflicting information between different tutors and some can be hard to get hold of sometimes. Assessments are received at the start of a module with guidance from tutors available throughout this time period. As I completed the Foundation Degree in Integrated Practice before doing this course, I was familiar with Edge Hill and some of the tutors. My main concern was being able to cope with a higher level of study alongside working and having a life!

I was worried about the change in the amount of work and style of work required compared to that needed at A-level which although it was massive step up, it was made easier due to the support from tutors and wide variety of resources.

The course is actually pretty new (only in its second year in 2010/11), so some things still need to be ironed out- some current modules are being changed and updated, and there are other new modules being added, leading to a little confusion. However as the course is so new it really should be expected and should be sorted out in the next year or so.

Some people think that as we only go in for two days a week we don’t do a lot, however others recognise that we have the same number of hours in seminars/lectures in those two days as they do over five days. They actually think that they would benefit more from being in for several hours over a couple of days rather than an hour or two every day, as they feel they don’t get in the right frame of mind over such a short period of time. They also think that I know more people from my course because there are not that many people on the course, and the seminar setting allows people to feel more comfortable when speaking.

What’s special about your course? I think what is really special is the external input from outside the University, such as real paramedics who join us as guest lecturers. Due to the fact I did my first degree at Edge Hill I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too worried about starting the course. However I was concerned about the jump from degree level to Masters but the lecturers made clear what was needed to make that jump, and any issues I had regarding work and marks I found the lecturers very approachable and always willing to help.

What is the teaching and assessment like? I have found the teaching works well for me; it consists of part lecture and part discussion. This allows theory to come across and then issues and ideas regarding the theory are openly discussed. The lecturers encourage discussion and this allows students to voice any opinions or questions regarding the subject. The assessments tend to be part coursework part exam, depending on the modules. Coursework can involve assignments, reports and presentations. They have always been handed out in a manageable amount and the range of assessments mean students usually encounter at least one of their strengths be it an assignment or exam.

What’s special about your course? My course is special as there are only 40 students roughly on the PGCE Business Education course. Therefore, it is very different from when you study your undergraduate degree. Usually you will have been used to studying with vast amounts of people at university, whereas when you complete your PGCE course, it really is a close knit group (…cheesy but very true). The course leaders and tutors care for you individually and really do want the best for you. Looking back on my undergraduate degree, I didn’t even know who the course leader was, whereas on this course you are in regular contact with them!

What is the teaching and assessment like? The teaching is excellent and the assessment is really helpful. Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? Since I graduated from Chester University in 2008 I have been working in schools. My roles have included anything from Learning Support Assistant in an Inclusion Centre to a Learning Assistant in a classroom working oneto-one. The information I received prior to starting at Edge Hill gave me minimal information regarding start dates and plans for the initial few weeks in Edge Hill. There were one or two students (including myself) who had not organised child care because of limited communication prior to starting. However if you do have childcare issues I would recommend phoning the faculty in advance to see what they can do to help.

What is the teaching and assessment like? The teaching is variable, as you would expect from any University, but one thing I would like to see improved is the feedback on our assessments. They should be more in-depth and aimed at improving awareness of your strengths and weaknesses.

Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? It is a challenging course which pushes you to become a great teacher. If you want to be a teacher and have the commitment and enthusiasm then this course is for you. It is very fast paced and the work is constant but the end result and the experience is worth it. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special about your course? You become a little family within the first few weeks and you are propelled into the world of teaching very early on. The support you get from the tutors is unbelievable and they are always going out of their way to meet your needs. It is hard work and if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not interested in a job in teaching I would advise you to rethink your choice or put it on hold.

I have wanted to become a teacher in secondary school for some time now and due to personal circumstances have not had the chance until now. I think in general folks can be a little negative about young people and being a mother to a teenager I feel that sometimes the generalisation that kids are ‘no good’ is rather unfair. This has driven me to want to work with young people and encourage and inspire them to raise their aspirations and reach their potential with a quiet confidence. I have yet to meet a teenager that is ‘bad’.

Although the course is very intensive and the work load can feel immense and insurmountable at times, there is never a dull moment and the students on the course and staff and pupils I have met on my placements make the experience priceless and very worthwhile.

There are a lot of strategies and techniques to come to terms with but everyone is very sympathetic to the fact that you are learning and over time particularly with assessment and teaching this comes. I find it very like learning how to drive....so many things to remember and muddle up but once you arrive at your test each action you perform becomes natural and instinctual.

It has been very difficult for my family, mainly because I have parental responsibilities as well as Uni responsibilities. You must be fully committed to your work and it is very difficult to balance both home and work life due to the intensive workload. What I would say is that it isn’t impossible and as long as you are strict with yourself and manage your time to ensure you make time for those important to you and for yourself then everybody wins.

The one thing that makes my course so special is the dedication that many of the staff in the department show, the support is nothing short of excellent. Joanne: I was worried about the workload. However, while there is a lot of paperwork, the workload is manageable. I wish I had known about the amount of travelling required.

Gillian: I will be able to teach in the life-long learning sector and will work towards attaining my Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (“QTLS”). Why study your course? And why at Edge Hill? If, like me, you’re working full time in a demanding job but you want gain a Masters qualification without stepping off the career ladder, this program is ideal. The course content is fantastic and student focused. There are some modules that stand out as particularly amazing, one of which I have just completed and has had a direct impact on my career development. As with all courses there are some modules that cover the necessary skills to complete the academic requirements but generally the course is exciting and engaging. I have studied at another university but Edge Hill and particularly the Faculty of Health is great at listening, responding and developing you as a customer and student.

What’s special about your course? The Course is: practical, relevant, new, exciting and engaging. You are studying with people who have a mix of skills and knowledge and your able to build networks whilst learning their from their experiences. The program leader encourages a collaborative learning experience where you feel able to talk about your learning without feeling silly. It’s a great qualification to have and it gives you the skills to get ahead in your career.
