Burlesque will entertain you in unique fashion By day they are the faces you see on the streets, in the stores, instructing your dance class but once per month these ordinary Kamloops citizens come out and put on a show like you have probably never seen before. These are the gals and guys of Kamloops Burlesque, a once monthly show that takes place at the Blue Grotto. “We are committed to bringing the glitz, glam and cheekiness that is the magic of burlesque to the loops,” explains Calamity Jane aka Jenna Huxley of Instinct Adornment and one of the most recognizable faces of the monthly burlesque show. “These performances are in the old Vaudeville tradition with dancers, singers and more. Each is a showcase of soloists and troops. Don’t forget to come early and come often!” Burlesque has had a long and rich history throughout the world. The word which essentially came from the Italian word burlesco, means a joke or to ridicule, and that’s where the art of burlesque began. It was work that made fun of other work. Throughout the years it evolved especially in America to what we know this show is all about, fun, laughs,

‘you’ve seen one, you haven’t seen them all’. Each month has a different theme, different cast, different acts and an all around different allure of fun and fantasy. You can look forward to an artistic and imaginative show acted, sung and danced by people as interesting and imaginative as the stuff they have come up with. Fun for all, the burlesque shows happen once per month. The next show is on Thursday, July 14 and is 50’s Pin Up night. Not only are they looking for an audience but, they are more than excited for you to come dressed up in costume. And if you think that you might have something to show off, invite you to contact them in advance. “If you are interested in taking part in the show, please let us know,” finishes Jenna. “This is a monthly showcase and we are always interested in new performers and acts.” Join them July 14th for 50’s Pin Up, August 11th for Octapussy, September 8th for Back to School, and October 13th for Steam Punk. You can check them out on Facebook for additional monthly themes or to get in touch with the organizers. – continued on page 2

Kamloops cocktail winner sips up Congratulations to the grand champion of the Kamloops Cocktail 2011 Tourism Kamloops competition - Sips Martinis & Tapas, with their creation of the “Lakebreeze”. The Lakebreeze is made with house-made cucumber infused Vodka, Alize, Blue Bols, watermelon infused water and garnished with fish shaped watermelon and alcohol infused popsicles. Matt Dick from Sips did a great job explaining how this drink ties into Kamloops, as it represents our two rivers, over 150 lakes in the region, fishing and the Salmon Run. It’s fresh, relaxed and vibrant in colour, which embodies the brand of Tourism Kamloops nicely. Sips will be serv-

Riverside Park lifeguard service

Lifeguard service is once again available at the Riverside Park beach from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. daily, weather permitting. To promote a safer river swim experience, when the “Lifeguard on Duty” sign is displayed, the City recommends swimming within the designated swim area and to always keep within arms’ reach of young children. Closely supervise children with inflatable toys as they can blow away from shore and children

will often follow them to deeper water. Visit www.kamloops.ca/swim for more helpful water smart tips to keep you safe this summer. For your information, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) unit is located in the Riverside Lifeguard office and will be available during lifeguard on-duty hours. In the event of a medical emergency, call 911 and immediately alert the lifeguards.

poetry slam The second and last Wednesday of each month sees every table at The Art We Are Tea Joint and Gallery filled with folks who are there to see or perhaps even participate in this month’s Poetry Slam. If you’ve never experienced a Poetry Slam, it’s a spoken word event where poets recite or read, dramatize and perform poetry for an audience. Each poet is given five minutes when their name is drawn randomly after they sign up. Theatricality is welcome and enthusiastically supported, however strict rules of decorum pertaining to hate, racism and sexism apply. Kamloops author Richard Wagamese and Christina Grono owner of The Art We Are started the Slam with the goal of creating and building a spoken word community in Kamloops. If you’re interested in participating or would like to just watch, the next Slam is this Wednesday and then again on July 27. Admission is just $5 at the door and a non-perishable food item for the Kamloops Food Bank. Aiirick Dunfield is pictured here reading at the last Slam.

Annual Home Tour fundraiser at Sun Peaks

The last time you were at Sun Peaks, surely you noticed the gorgeous houses. You probably even thought that you would love to see them inside. Well here is your chance! The Home Tour: Architectural Spaces, a Kamloops Art Gallery fundraiser, will be taking place at, and enroute to, Sun Peaks on Sunday July 17 in conjunction with the Sun Peaks Wine and Culture Festival that takes place that weekend.
