New ‘Access to Licensed Practical Nursing’ Program Have you ever dreamed of being a nurse, but thought it was unattainable? The Academy of Learning, downtown’s premier Business and Career College, is about to change that. The Academy of Learning is known throughout the community as the place to go when you want to upgrade your skills, and throughout the years have helped many Kamloops students reach their dreams and career aspirations in a variety of fields. Just recently they have announced the launch of their newest program, Access to Licensed Practical Nursing (ALPN). Residential Care Attendants have the potential to upgrade their skills at Academy of Learning to become Licensed Practical Nurses. Pictured is the Residential Care Attendants class of 2010. Back row (L-R): Hendrik VanRyk, H&H Total Care Services Inc. chief operating officer; Bari Cooper; Tearia Martens; Launie Galbraithe and Susan Smurthwaite. Middle row: Chris Carlson, Jennifer McKee, Sheri Price, Dusti Naud, and Marjorie Bungay, The Hamlets at Westsyde general manager. Front row: Susan Hasselmann, Heidi Moore and Barb Olechow, instructor.

“This is the only program available of its kind in Kamloops and area, says Susan Smurthwaite, director of Academy of Learning Kamloops. “It is brand new curriculum which meets and exceeds the Standards of Practice and Competencies for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in British Columbia and the Code of Ethics, as set out by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPNBC). In keeping with our Residential Care Attendant program, ‘Hands-On at the

Hamlets,’ our new ALPN program is 100 percent on-site and instructor-lead in The Hamlets at Westsyde Seniors Facility. We are very proud to be offering it. Long anticipated in the community, this particular program is specifically designed for current Residential Care Attendants who would like to continue on their career path and become Licensed Practical Nurses. In order to qualify for the program students must have

graduated from a recognized Care Attendant program and have already worked 1000 or more hours in that field. “The focus will be on the Practical Nursing aspect, continues Susan. “The Licensed Practical Nursing program runs for 8.9 months including 12 weeks of Practicum/ Preceptorships at varying private facilities – continued on page 2

Students to learn essential swimming survival skills The City of Kamloops and School District #73 are the recipients of a $9,700 grant for the Lifesaving Swim to Survive School Program. This grant is administered by the Lifesaving Society, and made possible by their funding partners, RBC Foundation and BC Transmission Corporation. The Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim-to-Survive® Standard defines the essential minimum skills required to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. The program consists of three in-water lessons of 45 minutes each, focusing on a sequence of three skills: roll entry, tread water for one minute, and swim 50 meters. Schoolteachers also receive optional in-classroom water safety lessons to augment the skills learned at the pool. The Lifesaving Society projects that if every Canadian learned the Swim to Survive standard the drowning rate would be reduced by 50 percent. Therefore, the goal of the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive School Program is to provide training to 50 percent of Grade 3 students within the threeyear period of January 2010 to December 2012. In Kamloops, all 978 Grade 3 students in the district will have the opportunity to participate in 2010.

Lifesaving Society vice president Dalyce Brandt (left) presents a cheque to City of Kamloops representatives Denise Harper (centre) and Marg Spina.

School District #73 recognizes how important it is for all of our children to possess essential swimming skills. “This is especially true as our school district extends across a wide geographical area filled with many lakes and rivers,” says Mike Johnson, active schools

and nutrition coordinator with School District #73. “Many of the rural communities in the district do not currently have access to public swimming facilities which makes this funding all the more valuable since all grade 3 students have the opportunity to participate in the program.”

The Swim to Survive School Program commenced October 1 and will continue through to June 2011. The program was officially launched on October 15 at the Tournament Capital Centre. For more information, visit kamloops.ca/swim or sd73.bc.ca.

Social planning grant applications available from City The City of Kamloops is now accepting applications for 2011 Social Planning Grants. Up to $60,000 is available for seed grants, operational grants, special projects or special capital expenditures for eligible projects. The applying agencies must aim to strengthen and enhance the well-being of our community, promote volunteering and address social concerns. Additionally, the program should strive to implement self-help programs, promote cultural understanding and partner with other service providers in the community. The grant must not provide direct financial assistance to individuals or families or duplicate services of a government or local service agency. The project should fall into one of the eight Kamloops Social Plan areas including: housing

and homelessness; safe places, alternative transportation and environmental health; youth issues; aboriginal community; building social agencies and community capacity; food security; children and families; or

health and addictions. The deadline for submission is December 17, 2010. In January 2011, the Social Planning Council and City staff will review submissions and may request presentations from applicants.

The City will notify all applicants of final decisions by the end of March 2011. The grant application form and complete guidelines are available online at www.kamloops.ca/ socialplan or call 250-828-3758.

Academy of Learning offers nursing program – continued from page 1 and Interior Health locations. The student is a proactive participant in the learning process, and is responsible for applying theory to nursing practice in a dynamic learning environment. This is a main focus for us, as theoretical knowledge and practical experience must go hand in hand for true learning to occur.” With an already overtaxed health care system, there almost couldn’t be a better time to go fur-

ther into the field of health care. More and more of the daily duties are being placed on nursing staff with Licensed Practical Nurses being relied on for many duties. LPNs are found all throughout the community with employment typically consisting of providing nursing care usually under the direction of a medical practitioner, registered nurse or other health team members. Many employment opportunities for LPNs can be found in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities,

rehabilitation centres, doctor’s offices, clinics, companies, private homes, hospice centres and community health centres. To find out more information about the Academy of Learning’s newest career bridging program – Access to Licensed Practical Nursing you can visit the Academy of Learning at 699 Victoria Street here in the downtown core. The Academy of Learning can also be reached by phone at 250.372.5429 or by email at admissionskam@ academyoflearning.ca.

New CT scanner for hospital

Vanbots Construction will be renovating the Royal Inland Diagnostic Imaging department to accommodate a second computed tomography (CT) suite for the new state-of-the-art CT unit expected this winter. “This announcement is great news, as we know the new CT scanner will not only improve the quality and speed of the scans but also the department’s testing abilities,” said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “ The new CT scanner is a top-of-theline product that will be able to provide a wider variety of scans including advanced lung analysis, as well as some procedures that reduce the need for doing barium enemas and invasive angiograms. The new machine is able to create up to 312 slices per second, compared to the four now created by the older machine currently operating at Royal Inland. In addition, while radiation levels for all CT scans are deemed safe,

patients will receive a lower-than-usual dose with the new scanner. The CT project is funded by the RIH Foundation ($1.5 million) and the Thompson Regional Hospital District ($1.2 million) with the remaining $300,000 coming from Interior Health. “The support of the community was immediate during our campaign for a new CT scanner. Our generous donors truly are responsible for making this project possible. It is very fulfilling to see that the electrical upgrade necessary for this cutting edge machine is complete and renovations are now underway,” said Veronica Carroll, RIH Foundation executive officer. Construction in the Diagnostic Imaging department is expected to commence in the coming weeks. Patients in the area are asked to watch for directional signage, as there will be some impact to waiting areas, hallways and stretcher bays during the renovations.

together is amazing! Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association manager Gay Pooler (right) and North Shore Business Improvement Association manager Peter Mutrie invite all Kamloops businesses to take part in the food bank fundraiser “Together is Amazing” in cooperation with Shaw Cablesystems. Until November 15 there will be a friendly competition between North Shore and South Shore businesses in an effort to find out which area can raise the most food for the food bank. Businesses can deliver their donations to the Kamloops Food Bank, located at 171 Wilson St. on November 15. If businesses cannot attend the “weigh-in” on Nov. 15, donations can be delivered to Shaw in Northills Centre, or to Golden Buddha, 247 Victoria St., to have it counted towards their teams’ totals.

Best use of a pumpkin patch John, a city slicker from Toronto, bought a pumpkin patch. He thought that he could make more money from chickens than the previous owner made from pumpkins, so he went to a poultry farm and bought 50 chickens. "50 is a lot of chickens for that little pumpkin patch," commented the proprietor. "I am used to big business," John replied. A week later John was back

at the farm. "I need another 50 chickens," he said. "Boy, you are serious about this chicken farming," the poultry farmer told him. "Oh yes," John replied. "It will be okay if I can just iron out a few problems." "Problems?" asked the farmer. "Yeah," replied John, "I think I planted that first batch too close together."

Kamloops Film Society dog needs a name - The Kamloops Film Society’s dog about town was created by the late Glenda Mathew (above), a graphic designer and former Film Society board member who passed away in July. The logo has appeared on Film Society posters, brochures, membership cards and in their ads for years, and yet still doesn’t have a name! Now it’s your turn to give the hound a handle! You can enter your choice for a name online via the Kamloops Film Society’s Facebook page, by email to kamloopsfilmsociety@gmail.com, or in person at the Paramount theatre on Film Society nights. The contest closes on December 2 and the winner will be announced at the society’s first film in January 2011. The winning entry wins the prize of two full passes to the 2011 Kamloops Canadian and International Film Festival. The next film in the Film Society’s Fall Series is Mid-August Lunch, an Italian comedy with English subtitles. It will be held on November 4 at 7pm at the Paramount Theatre, 503 Victoria St. Advance tickets available at Movie Mart, 520 Seymour St.
