Tranquille Valley’s country market a hidden gem A&W CHARITY Out beyond the airport, the golf course and even Padova City there is a special haven with a long and rich history in the area. This area, which is known as the Tranquille Valley, is home to farmers, ranchers and people who just generally love being out in the country. For generations families have settled there, working the land, providing meat, vegetables, and fruit to us city folk. There is even a book, which was published by Warren and Carolyn Bepple, aptly named “Memories of Criss Creek, Red Lake, and Copper Creek” which chronicles the area’s pioneers and their struggles and adventures in the land. If you haven’t ventured out past Padova City up the Red Lake Road then you probably haven’t seen the marvelous countryside and the plethora of acreages that make this area a community. Popular member of the North Shore business community, Wesley Lesosky of the Lemonade Stand, is one of the residents out there and is president of the Tranquille Valley Community Association. He would like to invite everyone out to their area of town for their Community and Beyond Country

Royal Inland Hospital Foundation anticipate next hoax

On Friday May 27, after the Boston Bruins won the series with the Tampa Bay Lightning, an enthusiastic Canucks fan made a new jersey for the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s Ambassador and Boston Bruin, Mark Recchi. Recchi, who is currently featured in an 8’ x 9.5’ campaign billboard on the lawn of the Royal Inland Hospital, was seen in a homemade Canucks Jersey Saturday morning. Veronica Carroll, Executive Director at RIH Foundation says she wasn’t at all surprised, and in fact, was a little impressed. “I thought it was really creative,” she said. “We took photos of it and people let us know that this is what had happened.” We put it on our Facebook page. We just knew, once Boston had clinched on Friday night,

we were in for it,” stated Carroll. “Our midnight jersey swapper has us wondering what’s next!” finished Carroll. The Mark Recchi 365 Day Challenge was set on February 14, 2011 to raise the remaining funds for the New Intensive Care Unit at Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. With $1.1 million left to raise to complete the $3 million goal, the Foundation is thankful for the support of Mr. Recchi and the community. For almost 30 years, critically ill and injured patients have received life-saving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Royal Inland Hospital. The modern ICU will bring upgraded technology, improved privacy, greater efficiencies for hospital staff, and much-needed support and comfort to patients and their families and friends.

New BC Chamber board At their Annual General Meeting in Prince George on May 29-31, members of the BC Chamber of Commerce voted to re-elect two Kamloops directors to the BC Chamber board. Both Kamloops Chamber board director Brant Hasanen and Chamber executive director Deb McClelland will serve on the board for the 2011-2012 term. “I was surprised to be asked to return for a second year, as my term to represent the BC Chamber Executives was to end this month,” states Deb McClelland. “I really enjoy contributing to the BC Chamber team and feel highly valued in this position.” Brant Hasanen returns as director for his fourth year, completing his second term with BC Chamber. Giant farmer’s market with farm fresh eggs and more! – continued from page 1 the market and sale will be an event you will not want to miss. With such great growing and farming lands, residents will be holding garage sales as well as selling items like bedding plants, crafts, artisan items, locally grown vegetables, herbs, jams, jellies and sauces, farm eggs, manure (chicken, cow and llama) and live chicks. This will all be going down on Sunday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. all over the community. Cara’s driving directions are

as follows: Drive out past the airport, stay on Tranquille Road, and when you get all the way to the train tracks and old Padova City/Tranquille Farms, follow the line in the road up and over the rail road tracks. Stay on the road as it turns to gravel and follow it up 24km approx. You will enter a hidden valley of country farms, acreages and rolling meadows. Garage sales will start in the first section and move all the way up the road to the bulletin board you will come upon on your left. We will have maps of all the locations located at the bulletin board. We will

also have a hot food concession, beverages, a bake sale and possibly a silent auction on the school grounds.” Make a day of it and head out to the Tranquille Valley on a bright and sunny Sunday. Not only will you get to visit what is sure to be like a giant farmers market but if you haven’t been out that way before you get to explore a little piece of heaven right on the outskirts of town. See you at the sale! P.S. You may want to hit a bank machine before you head out. Just in case! Tanya Orozco, freelance

Did you see fighter jets flying over Kamloops two weekends ago? The 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron was in town for a weekend of festivities marking their 70th anniversary of honouring wartime hero John (Moose) Fulton. At the same time it was the 25th anniversary of 886 Overlander Wing Air Force Association of Canada, and the 80th anniversary of Fulton Field (our local airport). The 204 Black Maria Squadron were invited to participate in the weekend of aviation anniversaries.

Kamloops Landscapes come alive at Wilson House Wilson House Gallery located at 115 Tranquille Road is featuring artist Thor Fridriksson until June 30 with an opening reception on Thursday, June 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thor Fridriksson has lived in Kamloops for 33 years. He came to teach

here in 1978 (just for one year). Originally he thought the Kamloops landscapes were drab and boring, however now he sees the landscapes as dynamic, colourful, and interesting. The landscape paintings that he does have a definite Kamloops fla-

Arjun Singh starts conversation I’d like to announce today that I hope to once again earn the privilege of serving the citizens of Kamloops on our city council. I am going to spend the summer implementing an initiative I am calling 100 Kamloops Conversations. I will be contacting Kamloops citizens from all walks of live and from all sectors of the community, and I will be asking them if they would share some of their stories,

opinions, and experiences with me. I hope my campaign and my service on council, if elected, will reflect a comprehensive and holistic understanding of Kamloops and of Kamloopsians. I would like to play a part in bringing our community closer together. If anyone would like to contact me to have such a conversation, I would very much welcome that as well. vour. The hills around Kamloops are alive with colour and there are hundreds of scenes that need to be painted. Thor has been a teacher for 35 years. He is best known for teaching mathematics and instructing golf. He sees mathematics and painting as very compatible because both require a systematic and organized approach. Painting and golf are opposites though. Painting can reduce stress and gives one a sense of accomplishment. Golf creates stress and makes people crazy. Thor’s paintings have been heavily influenced by the Group of 7. The landscapes and colours are bold. Thor may put colours into the paintings that did not exist in the real landscape - that is part of the fun. Thor loves to play with the colours and to layer them so that the colours beneath influence the upper layers. This exhibit featuring acrylic paintings and prints is called simply “Kamloops Landscapes”.

Seniors moving in to new community RiverBend Seniors Community at 760 Mayfair Street is a one-of-a-kind asset for seniors, thanks to a win-win relationship on the planning and development of the project between multiple levels of government, a local non-profit society and private developers. River City Seniors Society (formerly Thrupp Manor Society), in partnership with BC Housing and local private developers A & T Project Developments and Quinn Developments, have collaborated to build 66 social housing units for seniors, along with 99 private, market-value suites -- all under one roof and situated along the South Thompson River in Brocklehurst. Through this unique partnership, residents of RiverBend Manor and those living in private suites may both benefit from high quality housing and common-area amenities, as well as support services such as meal preparation and housekeeping operated by the society. Suites are within easy walking distance to local amenities such as shopping, medical, dental services and public transit. Five-star common amenities accessible to all residents including dining areas, common room, entertainment room, exercise room, barbecue area and library “This age-in-place approach to seniors housing has not been seen before at this level in Kamloops, says Frank Quinn of Quinn Developments. “Seniors living in the mar-

ket-value suites receive the benefit of full age-in-place services provided by the society on an as-needed basis. The society, in turn, has been able to increase its social housing units from 35 (located at the former Thrupp Manor) to 66 at the new location. These new units offer residents five-star level accommodation and amenities not otherwise found in social housing projects – value that has been contributed by the private developers. Federal and provincial government funding distributed through to BC Housing, as well as tax program incentives through the City of Kamloops, have all supported the social housing portion of the project. “Thrupp Manor is proud to have provided quality affordable

seniors housing for the past 44 years. The Board of Directors of the Society is excited about this innovative partnership, which will allow us to continue and expand our service to this vulnerable population, says Lori Ottem, board chair of the River City Senior Society. Construction of the $33-million joint development has progressed well over the last several months and seniors are now moving in. As well, benefits to local economy are important, with a $33 million investment in Kamloops North Shore along Tranquille Corridor, and estimated 200 jobs created through construction of the development, and ongoing job creation. Hockey support ‘I am a Sharks fan,’ a first-grade teacher explains to her class. ‘Who likes the Sharks?’ Everyone raises a hand except one little girl. ‘Janie,’ the teacher says, surprised. ‘Why didn’t you raise your hand?’ ‘I’m not a Sharks fan.’ ‘Well, if you are not a Sharks fan, then what team do you like?’ ‘The Canucks,’ Janie answers. ‘Why in the world are you a Canucks fan?’ ‘Because my mom and dad are Canucks fans.’ ‘That’s no reason to be a Canucks fan,’ the teacher replies, annoyed. ‘You don’t always have to be just like your parents. What if your mom and dad were morons? What would you be then?’ ‘A Sharks fan.’

It’s all about perspective Little Billy arrived home after his hockey game, threw open the door and ran to his Dad. “How was the game, son? How did you do?” asked his father, who was unable to attend the game. “You aren’t going to believe it, Dad!” Billy exclaimed. “I was responsible for the winning goal!” “That’s wonderful,” his dad said. “How did you do that?” “I missed my check on the other team’s high scorer!”

Deer fawns on their own The British Columbia Wildlife Park regrets that due to their lack of funding this year, they will not be able to accept any deer fawns for rehabilitation in 2011. This lack of financial resources will not allow them to complete the needed upgrades to the deer fawn rehabilitation enclosure so that it will meet acceptable health standards for the care of these animals. If you do encounter an unattended deer fawn in the wild please leave it alone. Mother deer will leave their young fawns for

many hours at a time and will only return to them to nurse or to move them to a new location. Deer fawns are born with very little scent and will remain hidden and motionless until they are about three weeks old and will even act limp when picked up by a predator. Before you attempt to rescue a deer fawn, please first contact someone with wildlife rehabilitation knowledge or a B.C. Government Fish & Wildlife Branch, Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations.
