Welcome to 2021!! As we optimistically look ahead into the new year we’re excited to celebrate this year’s Tangi Lifestyles Readers’ Choice Winners. Each issue of Tangi Lifestyles highlights the best that our area has to offer. The first issue of each year we reveal the local businesses that our readers choose as best of the best. We thank the thousands of you who took time to vote and encourage everyone to join us in celebrating this year’s winners.

The past year has been trying for everyone including our local nonprofit organizations. These organizations traditionally operate on very limited budgets and most were unable to have the traditional fundraising events which allow them to serve our community. We hope you will keep them in mind as you plan your charitable giving this spring.

Finally we want to tip our hat to our community. This holiday season, we at Northshore Media heavily promoted the special urgency of shopping local this year to support our LOCAL businesses. In addition to our magazine, we utilized Tangi 96.5 and Kajun 107.1 to overcommunicate the importance of spending locally and not online. Local business owners have all told us that despite the pandemic, this was a very successful holiday season. So on behalf of all locally-owned businesses, we thank our community for giving the gift of local this holiday season.

The input we get from readers shapes our content. Please share your thoughts for stories at info@tangilifestyles.com and send your pictures for our SEEN & HEARD and your events for our calendar to events@ tangilifestyles.com. Cheers to a confident start to 2021!!

The dedicated and experienced team members at Advanced Pain Institute in Hammond are committed to bringing relief to those who feel their condition is debilitating and lowering their quality of life.

Let’s face it...life is painful, with nearly 1 in 5 Americans suffering from chronic pain everyday. Despite the increasing prevalence of pain, the practice and research of pain management are relatively new fields compared to other medical focuses.

The staff at Advanced Pain Institute are double board certified and fellowship trained in Neurology, pain management and headache medicine. The knowledge associated with those certifications are vital to managing chronic pain. As Dr. Mohamed Elkersh explains, “Through my background, training and years of experience, I am well-prepared to help with the pain.” They are aware that ineffective pain management can lead to a marked decrease in the overall quality of life.

Advanced Pain Institute is committed to providing comprehensive care in an environment of comfortable caring compassion. When asked what was the most

important message to be shared with the community, Dr. Elkersh said, “Skill, professionalism and empathy are what define us. We are experts in pain and how it affects the mind, body and soul. With us you can trust that your overall well-being is our goal.”

Those suffering from unknown or unresolved chronic pain are able to visit Advanced Pain Institute’s website where they are able to select a problem area and view potential treatments or procedures designed to resolve chronic pain. New patients can leave their name, contact information, preferred appointment date, and a message detailing their specific concerns.

Pain is often referred to as the 5th vital sign when patients are evaluated. Pain levels and signs are taken along with blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, and temperature. Although pain is not a vital sign, it is a symptom of an underlying problem. The experts at Advanced Pain Institute understand the distinction and are committed and well-prepared to ease the pain and improve the lives of their patients.

Advanced Pain Institute wants their clients to understand that there is no need to live with ongoing, fatiguing pain. They treat pain throughout the body as well as pain related to cancer, CRPS, shingles, and more. If you are ready to regain control of your pain and your life, you can find out more information and schedule an appointment by calling 985-345-PAIN or visiting their website at painexperts.com.

PatLanier Hammond’s “ERNEST HEMINGWAY”

14 TANGI LIFESTYLES

If imitation is the best form of flattery, Ernest Hemingway must be very flattered each July when men from around the country descend on Key West, Florida for the annual Hemingway Days.

Not to be left out of the fun and festivities, Tangipahoa Parish is represented by Patrick Lanier who has been trying to become a Papa for the past fifteen years. Contestants are called Wannabes and the winner has the title of Papa.

“Each year I give it my best shot to win the contest and receive the title of Papa,” said Lanier. “Once you become a Papa, you become a contest judge for the rest of your life.”

Lanier said he tries to connect with the judges and sway their vote by coming up with something memorable. One year he sang his version of Elvis Presley’s “I Want to be your Papa Bear” and another year he had shirts made with “Papa for President.”

Pat Lanier has come close but has not received the regal title yet. The competition preliminaries are Thursday and Friday night, and each Wannabe has 30 seconds to make an impression to advance to the finals which are on Saturday. Then the Wannabe has one minute to impress all the Papas.

Over 150 Hemingway lookalikes are in the competition, which is held at Sloppy Joe’s, a favorite hangout for Ernest Hemingway when he lived in Key West. There is only one winner, and everyone else in the competition finishes second.

“My quest for the Papa title started fifteen years ago when I was sitting in the Crescent Bar and Brian Shirey told me I should enter the Hemingway contest. I didn’t know much about Hemingway or the contest, so I got more information and decided that was for me. I’ve been going to Key West every year since then.”

The lookalike contest is the main event for Hemingway Days, but there is also the Running of the Bulls where the Wannabes push life-sized bulls on wheels down Duvall Street to re-enact the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

On the serious side, if there is one, is the Hemingway Days fundraiser for local students who want to attend the local Community College in Key West.

Ten scholarships are awarded to nursing students to commemorate Hemingway’s service as an ambulance driver in World War I. Ten other scholarships are awarded for journalism students since Hemingway served as a war correspondent in World War II.

“The 2020 Hemingway Days was canceled because of COVID-19, but I am looking forward to getting back on stage to impress the Papas in 2021.”

We wish Pat Lanier the best of luck, and we look forward to Tangipahoa Parish’s Ernest Hemingway lookalike bringing home the Papa title to Hammond and the Crescent Bar.

A Year of Generosity

Generosity is about more than money. Although, I don’t apologize for my thinking about money. It’s said, after all, that the only autobiography some of us will ever write will be with our checkbooks!

I am concerned, however, that the core values of our lives are in sync with what we practice in our faith. Since I think the Bible is about the meaning and purpose of life, our understanding about money is a very appropriate subject for discussion.

That, however, will be for another time. As I’ve said, this is about more than money. It is about generosity.

To begin with let me define generosity. It is a habit of offering time, assets and possessions, or talents to help where there is need. Generosity is often seen as desirable in our culture.

Did you hear about the eleven-year-old girl who was the last one in line in a soup kitchen? Many people had shown up and the servers realized they were starting to run out of food. The little

girl didn’t seem to notice, though, as her attention was on three small children across the street. She continued to wait patiently in line, and when she finally made it to the servers the only thing left was a single banana, which she thankfully accepted. Then, she walked across the street and carefully pealed the banana, broke it into three pieces, and gave a third to each of the other children. After that she sat down and licked the inside of the banana peel.

Jesus was always looking for ways to teach his disciples about the essence of faith, and I think in this sacrificial act he would have found a great example of generosity.

Dave Ramsey of Financial Peace University refers to it as “outrageous generosity.” Real generosity is a practice going beyond that which is expected and demonstrates how we understand the meaning and purpose of life. Generosity understands that our doing for others is a privilege instead of a duty. Generosity is a characteristic of living as God intends us live. I like that!

How eNg Started A Local Movement For Hope

HAMMOND - Erika Hemphill never expected to wake up to a divine appointment, but on a lovely fall day in late 2020, the custom home designer stumbled upon an opportunity that would change her life and her community in a major way.

“The Sunflower Project is the most humbling experience, and we could not have done this without our amazing team.”
Erika Hemphill, Owner, eNg Designs & Construction

Erika and her husband Garland are the owners of eNg Designs & Construction, a boutique custom home building company in Hammond. eNg is experiencing rapid growth, and is continuing to pioneer exciting new design options that provide incredible customization options for home building on the Northshore.

The Hemphill’s have always believed that “Humble beginnings come back by giving back.” Their commitment to professional excellence and transparency in their work has pushed the boundaries of modern home building. But home building and design is not their only goal. Recently the company was given the opportunity to start a local movement building hope—The Sunflower Project.

Divine Appointment

One of Erika’s primary goals for eNg Designs & Construction was to give back to one family in her community either by new construction or remodel before the business’s five-year anniversary. Exactly one year before this ambitious deadline, an opportunity that could only have been fate appeared on her social media.

After many years of feeling hopeless, local Tangi resident Marcy was pursuing recovery by building her very first home. “Hello family, friends, and friends who are family,” she stated in a Facebook post. “All of you who know me well know my struggles, my journey, and my passion. You also know that I am not a shy person about who I am, where I have been, and my beliefs of God’s purpose for my life.”

eNg owners Erika and Garland Hemphill lead the effort to provide Marcy (center) with her first home.
18 TANGI LIFESTYLES

When she became aware of her sibling’s needs, Marcy’s sister Kim reached out to Facebook friends asking for household items to be donated. Marcy was in need of everything that you can think of to turn her new house into a home, and she was not in a position to obtain all of them at once. This spoke to Erika’s heart directly.

“When I say Marcy literally just walked into our lives,” Erika explained, “God put her right in front of our faces. It is the most humbling experience, and we could not do this without our amazing team.”

Meeting Marcy

Immediately after reading the post about Marcy’s housing needs, Erika reached out to sister Kim to meet Marcy in person. They met face-to-face the next day, and shared each other’s hearts, stories and faith in Christ. As the two women would say later, the two of them ‘just connected.’

“Two weeks ago my sister went on Facebook and encouraged me because I was really really low,” Marcy explained. “The next thing I know, the next morning I’m in a beautiful soul’s office. Her name is Erika of eNg Designs & Construction. We had the sweetest meeting I have ever had. Let’s just say I left in tears.”

“For many years I thought I was unredeemable, hopeless, and ready to end my life. God met me laying on the bathroom floor crying out to Him. And from that day forward, I’ve lived my life - in great part to Celebrate Recovery at The Mission Church - to serve him and those around me, especially women whose footsteps I’ve walked in before. Now God has given me land and a home, and if you know me, you would know how miraculous that is!”

The Hemphill’s decided that they would not only help Marcy complete her home, but that they would take on the project head on. Erika wasted no time getting in touch with her local subcontractors, vendors, and personal connections to see if they would partner with eNg’s newfound mission. She knew that Marcy’s housing journey wasn’t just a personal journey-- it was a community journey. It would take a community effort of compassion to help Marcy’s dream grow into reality. Less than 24-hours after the post and a few phone calls, everyone was in!

The Sunflower Project

Affectionately dubbed the Sunflower Project after Marcy’s favorite flower, eNg’s Building Hope Project quickly fell into action. When the hearts of friends like Erika and Garland combined with Marcy’s sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Brian Walker, something miraculous happened. 1 John 3:17 says “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” Brian was working diligently on completing the interior of Marcy’s home but understood that it truly takes a community to fulfill a dream like Marcy’s. That’s when Kim created the Facebook post that captured Erika’s heart.

Dozens of family and friends, eNg’s vendors and subcontractors all pitched in to provide Marcy with all her household necessities. All brand new appliances, countertops, cabinets, tools, insulation, sheetrock, trim, paint, lighting, and plumbing were generously donated by eNg’s current vendors and skilled subcontractors in every occupation. eNg, Marcy and her family and friends would like to personally thank the following vendors and subcontractors for their time, generosity and donations. In no particular order, they are: Gabriel’s Building Supply, Sherwin Williams, Hammond location, ADL - Ferguson, Best Laminate and Flooring, Northshore Home Builders Association, Cabinets & Countertops Unlimited, Pete Benge Sheetrock, Top Coat Paint, Rabalais Construction, CMA Cabinets LLC, and Kenco Insulation.

Erika and Garland say they plan to continue eNg’s trend towards community building in every way they can. “We will continue to bless others as we have been blessed,” Erika said. “It is not a handout, it is a helping hand.”

The community building efforts of Tangi have made a lasting impact on it’s residents that leave them hoping they continue in the years to come. Erika wants to thank all of eNg’s ardent supporters and voters for the company’s 2021 Tangi Lifestyle Readers' Choice awards. “We are so blessed to be able to serve our community and amazing clients. This would not be possible without them!”

“Marcy, get ready, because it is going to be beautiful!”

My Journey

I was born in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert in El Paso, Texas, under the charring heat and blistering sun. This setting provided me with a front row seat to the damaging effects of the sun on skin.

After completing medical school, I chose to pursue Internal Medicine at LSU in New Orleans, Louisiana. I wanted to take time to develop a well-rounded perspective of medicine before choosing my final specialty. I take pride in my keen sense of observation and innate curiosity, so I enjoy the challenge of treating patients with complex medical problems. After graduation, I practiced as a hospitalist at Touro

Infirmary in New Orleans. During that time, I realized I missed using my hands in a more active role in my practice. When considering the next step in my career, I found myself drawn to the clinical variety and mix of medical and surgical disciplines that only dermatology could provide.

I have a passion for early detection of skin cancers, treating skin diseases, and surgical and cosmetic dermatology. I enjoy spending time educating my patients on sun protection and skin care regimens. Come visit me at Benson Dermatology or QnA Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa, and let me share my passion with you!

SLU Police Chief Michael Beckner LINKS

SOUTHEASTERN AND COMMUNITY

Southeastern Louisiana University Police Chief Michael Beckner has developed new strategies on how the University Police Department will start being more involved in the community.

Beckner interviewed for the position in Summer 2019, but has worked in official capacity for three months. He has experience working in Corinth, Mississippi, Augusta, Georgia and as a police chief in Anchorage, Alaska.

“MY VISION IS NOT TO BE SHUT AWAY BEHIND WALLS, BUT TO BE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY,” SAID BECKNER.

Additionally, the Hammond Police Department and the University Police have already begun to work together.

“I’ve been here three months, and I’ve seen a lot of opportunities in which we can work with the community and work with the Hammond Police Department,” he said.

Beckner said he has spoken with Chief Bergeron, and that SLU officers have started to patrol some neighborhoods in Hammond because the residents of the area have expressed an interest in more police presence as a crime deterrent. Beckner said it is important for the University Police Department to help out when they can because if something happens on campus, the Hammond Police would help as well.

Beckner said, “We have some really good ideas for the future.”

Beckner said the SLU Police Department wants to open up the campus to the community and be involved in the community as well. He said he plans to make the campus more accessible to residents of the area.

Coming soon is a smartphone app available for anybody, not just students. He said it will include a map of parking lots on campus, notifications, and mobile “blue lights.” The app will incorporate the use of geofencing which will create a perimeter in which app users will receive notifications about events and crime on campus.

Beckner said, “Everybody here is here to learn. That’s their main concern. They shouldn’t have to worry about their safety, too.”

He wants the department to be visible to the community and to invite residents of the area to see what is happening on Southeastern’s campus. The police chief said the department conducts a Rape Aggressive Defense (R.A.D.) Program, and he wants to offer it to the community.

“Southeastern is a humongous part of the Hammond community and economics,” Beckner said. “I think it’s important, as a police department, that we be involved in the community, too.”

The police chief said many students patronize local restaurants in the Hammond downtown area on the weekends. He thinks the SLU Police Department should be involved in the Hammond Police Department’s patrol rotation because they are mostly SLU students. He said UPD should let their students know they are there for them, along with the Hammond Police Department.

BECKNER SAID, “I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE REALIZE WE ARE HERE, TOO.”

Recently, UPD has been involved in community events like the Tangipahoa Parish Crimestoppers Trick or Treat event. Beckner said the SLU Police Department represents Southeastern at community functions, and he plans on involving the department in local organizations such as Special Olympics.

“I’m very big on transparency; crime happens everywhere. I think if people know what’s going on, they’ll realize it’s a very safe place to be,” Beckner said.

The annual report of on-campus crime was recently published for 2020 on December 1st.

Beckner said that SLU is like a small city in itself. On a regular day, pre-COVID, there could be 20,000 people on campus. The SLU Police Department is actually its own precinct, separate from the Hammond Police Department. Often mistaken for the parking department, Beckner said UPD does not enforce or monitor parking, and they do not receive the money from tickets.

“We’re like any other police department in America,” he said. “We struggle for funding; we struggle for equipment. We also understand that we are a university, and academics come first.”

The department is allocated funds from the state and the university. It can also benefit from federal grants to obtain extra income to help with operations.

The SLU Police Department officers want to be visible everywhere and use social media to connect with students. Officer Madison Morris monitors the social media accounts. Beckner said one of the TikTok videos got around 5.5 million views. Beckner said Officer Morris has national attention for her skill with social media communication.

Connections and collaborations make up the new chief’s vision. Beckner said, “We have a lot of community events on campus. We welcome our community on campus, and in turn, we want to be involved in the community.”

Getting to know Southeastern's COP COP OFFICER MADISON MORSE

Where are you from and how long have you been with Southeastern Police?

Growing up, my dad was in the military, so I have lived all over - but I consider Mandeville my hometown. I have been working with Southeastern Police since 2017, and even completed my Bachelor's in Criminal Justice at Southeastern during that time.

What drew you to the job?

My dad has been in law enforcement for as long as I can remember. I've always known this would be my career path, I just wasn't sure how or where I would start. Lieutenant Gipson actually spoke to one of my Criminal Justice classes about what UPD does. As he finished, he mentioned UPD was hiring. I figured "what the heck, why not apply" and I have now been working here for almost 4 years!

How long have you been on Tik Tok and what gave you the idea to start Tik Tok for SLU Police?

I began making TikToks shortly after the university switched to online classes in March 2020. At first it was just to pass the time, but I was quickly recognized by students and alumni! From then on, it became a way to "community police" from a distance! Supposedly, before Chief Beckner was hired he already knew my name. When we first met he asked me to make videos for an official department page, and I could not turn that opportunity down!

How has it affected your job?

I think creating content on a platform frequented by our students is important for community relations. Surprisingly, I am quite an introvert - it is so strange to me to walk through the Student Union and be recognized as the "TikTok Cop"

How often do you TikTok and what inspires a post?

Now that campus is back-in-action, I don't get to post as much anymore, and our followers do not let me forget it! We started the department page with a reference to "cone content" which includes traffic cones, mostly on my head (like a hat). But we get so many interactions and questions, so it is great to have a platform to answer people directly with genuine interactions.

What are some of your favorites?

A popular video feature among the longtime followers is the "cone content", which began as a dare from another officer to put a cone on my head for a dance trend. Personally, I enjoy the interactions and responding to questions with genuine responses, especially when the internet can be filled with so much hate and negativity.

Do students recognize you and what kind of following do you have?

I believe we are up to 165k followers with a few of our videos reaching between 1 Million and 5 million views!

Dr. David Allen is a son of Ponchatoula. He’s an alumnus of Ponchatoula High (’95) SLU (’01). He worked for the Louisiana Agriculture and Forestry Service for a few years before attending and graduating from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland. After serving his residency in Seattle and Tacoma, David returned to Louisiana where he opened Southern Podiatry Clinic, a private practice in Washington Parish which he still operates as well as his newest clinic which opened in his hometown of Ponchatoula in November of 2020.

FAMILY WORK

With 5 children, it’s hard to not have family as the top of the list. Elizabeth, Victoria, Laura, Michael and Emma make his life fulfilled and are the source of his Superpowers. His fiancé is his teammate and keeps him focused and on his toes like nobody else. His older brothers John and Scott challenge and support and his parents, Virgil and June remain his biggest cheer leaders and have relentlessly encouraged him to become a compassionate physician, a devoted father, and a servant of Christ.

“Saving lives one foot at a time” is how David reflects on his work. He loves going to work. No day is the same. He considers himself blessed to be able to provide clinical and surgical Podiatric care to a wide spectrum of patients including the privilege of serving fellow Veterans through his work with the VA. The interpersonal connections made with patients and their families is cherished. There are few rewards greater than helping people heal.

PONCHATOULA

As Ponchatoula has grown, David has grown with it and he couldn’t imagine living or raising his children anywhere else. When he opened his second podiatry office, the community welcomed it with open arms as it seems to with all locally owned small businesses. He reflects on how the community rallies behind one another when it matters most. It’s where he shared pancakes with his grandmother at Paul’s Café. It’s the Strawberry Festival. It’s a Jazz funeral for an alligator. It’s HOME!

SHOOTING

There is nothing quite as enjoyable as shooting. It is an exciting sensation to feel the immediate recoil and smell that burnt powder. This is a hobby that he shares with his family, as his father had with his. So, it may be more than just a hobby. It’s a tradition and an opportunity to make more of the moments that matter most.

THE CHARLIE BOY

Well, what’s a man without his dog? Sometimes a friend is what you need. A buddy to just hang out with, and let you spill out everything that may be on your mind without judgement. Of course, there is a tradeoff. The cost of each counseling session is a lot of playing fetch.
