Meteorological summer began June 1st, and if the past month is any indication, this is going to be a nice, hot summer! We’re all chomping at the bit to get out and make up for all of last year’s lost vacations and traditional summer activities. This issue of Tangi Lifestyles features a local exercise group of people from all different walks of life, local kids who have excelled in their creative fields and some charitable endeavors happening here in this parish. We have so many good things happening in our community!

As we get out and enjoy all of the activities this summer brings, please remember our local businesses. Before 2020, summer was traditionally a slower time for many of them. 2020 produced a new appreciation of their importance and the value they bring which many of us may have taken for granted. Buy local. Be local. Promote local. We do it every day. We hope you will too!

ROUX & BREW

The mantra for Real Estate is Location, Location, Location.

The mantra for Roux & Brew in Ponchatoula is Service, Service, Service. Or Atmosphere, Atmosphere, Atmosphere. Or even Live Music, Live Music, Live Music.

Join us on the Patio!

Regardless of Roux & Brew’s mantra, guests can always count on exceptional service, good food and a great atmosphere. This does not happen by luck. Owners Randy and Kayla Tomeny work hard to create a team culture for restaurant excellence.

“Without a doubt, we are 100% committed to our staff, and in return, we ask they be 100% committed to us and our customers," Randy Tomeny said.

Because of this, Roux & Brew consistently receives high praise for their service, food, and atmosphere. Randy and Kayla’s commitment to establish and refine their culture for service goes beyond lip service. Each week the management staff meets to discuss their successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

“We truly believe our culture and work environment attract individuals who want to prosper and excel,” Kayla said. “We demand a lot from our staff, and in return, we reward them for their hard work and commitment.”

The Tomenys have enjoyed tremendous growth in sales over the past seven years. Although their hours and days of operation during Covid were impacted, they've always been committed to being closed on Sundays and holidays. The results have been surprisingly positive.

“Our numbers continue to rise, but more importantly, our

staff can now work less hours and make more money. They know they have to give 100% for a shorter period of time, and their morale is extremely high," Kayla said.

Randy Tomeny said there is little staff turnover, but like good football head coaches, they are always searching and recruiting talent for the front and the back of the house. These two had their eyes on local, five-star prospect Robert Helms.

"We've been friends with Robert for over 30 years, and Randy contacted Robert over the summer. After a short recruiting period, a decision was made, and Robert joined the Roux & Brew team in August as our Managing Partner," Kayla said.

Robert Helms grew up in the restaurant business working in his family’s fast-food restaurants, high-end restaurants in New Orleans, Destin, Birmingham, and Atlanta and national steak restaurants. He said when Randy reached out to him while working in St. Tammany Parish, he knew the time was right.

“I have known Randy and Kayla for years, and I always liked Roux & Brew's staff and customer-centric philosophy,” said Helms. “I’m excited to be part of their team and helping them achieve greater success for their restaurant.”

Robert boasts about their hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, and entrées with a Louisiana flair, but he also brags about Roux & Brew’s atmosphere.

Roux & Brew has live entertainment almost every hour they are open, and word of their Saturday Brunch is spreading throughout southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The popularity of their Saturday Brunch and patio have created a need for more outdoor dining space. Expansion plans are underway to increase the covered outdoor seating.

“Kayla and I are extremely grateful to be part of the local dining community. We are humbled that people choose our restaurant to celebrate life. We will honor their commitment to us with exceptional service, an outstanding atmosphere, and a memorable meal,” Randy added.

The Gift of Forgetfulness

A spiritual director once told me that the greatest gift we can ask of God is the gift of forgetfulness. I hope this sounds as odd to you as it did to me that day. After all, people of faith often spend a lot of energy memorizing the verses and chapters of scripture. Catechism classes are filled with åmnemonics to aid the student in recalling this or that doctrine. And while all of that is good and well, my director was wise to assert that forgetfulness is an important tool for the disciple. Let me explain by setting a scene.

It’s a normal hot Sunday during an ordinary hot Summer. The pastor stands up to the pulpit, scripture in hand. He does it the same way each time. He opens the book the same way, he introduces the scripture the same way, His inflection? You guessed it, it is done the same way. And this particular Sunday, he launches into one of those very familiar passages, the kind of story that makes its way into our animated children’s Bibles, maybe the story of the prodigal son, or David and Goliath. he pastor’s actions are predictable, and unfortunately, so is our reaction. We turn off our brain. We shut off our heart. We’ve heard it before.

Nothing new to see, nothing new to hear. We are so familiar with the passage that we’ve become inoculated to its truth.

That is, unless we pray for the gift of forgetfulness. “Lord, let me forget I have ever heard this story. Let me experience the joy of forgiveness for the first time. Let me encounter the baffling mystery of your love for me, that you died for me. Lord, once again, make me a child before the radicalness of the gospel.” That is the prayer of forgetfulness. It’s a prayer to stop pretending that we comprehend the Divine, allowing us the gift of being blown away by Him over and over again.

When this prayer is answered, and the grace given, it not only changes our relationship with scripture, but all of our relationships and all of our interactions; every spouse, every child, every congregation, every job. Every seemingly mundane ordinary grind of a day takes on new meaning, because we see the truth, that every day is an adventure, and we are gifted with unfolding it. We never truly understand the greatness of God’s plans for us, even if they are hidden in the monotone ramblings of this priest, or the long drawn out dog days of summer.

SKY'S THE LIMIT AS GRADUATES TAKE FLIGHT

For local class of 2021 graduates Bebe Anderson, Charlotte Bradley, Cade Garafola and Lizzie Zaffuto, their journey as full-time New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) students transcended traditional high school paths and offered far more than just pre-professional arts training.

What's Next?

Cade Garafola will attend University of Colorado Denver to earn a BFA in Film and Television. He assumes he will end up in Los Angeles or New York, but for now, he is enjoying not really knowing.

What's Next?

Lizzie Zaffuto is heading to Sam Houston State University to pursue a BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography on scholarship. She aspires to perform and travel with a concert dance company and continue to create as a professional choreographer.

Established in 1973 as Louisiana’s own Fame–like public high school arts conservatory, NOCCA is modeled after college BFA programs. Acceptance is audition-based for students statewide, many of whom commute to the city upon admission.

“School in an urban environment is so different. We were next to the French Quarter, so walking field trips were common,” explains Anderson, a culinary arts student, 2020 NOCCA President Honors Award recipient and 2018 World Food Championship semifinalist. “We were able to experience the city in new ways.”

Visual art student Bradley enjoyed the eccentricity of the adjacent neighborhoods. “Here, just about everything is embraced,” she notes.

“I was really inspired by NOCCA’s core values, the diversity and inclusivity,” adds Zaffuto, 2021 NOCCA President Honors Award recipient.

Garafola, a musical theater student and 2018 and 2019 Helix Award recipient, agrees “NOCCA is so welcoming and open. It’s a great place to figure out who you are and your place in the world.”

While they may have sacrificed a more traditional path, they are grateful for the privilege of an educational journey with distinct rewards, memories and professional connections and perspectives gained.

“Instead of “Friday Night Lights,” we had jazz and dance concerts, shows, plays, art openings, and our own music festival,” Zaffuto reveals. “While unorthodox, this environment ultimately helped me mature and focus in on exactly what I wanted to do with dance and gain a better understanding of the industry.”

“Our instructors made sure we were aware of our options as visual artists,” confirms Bradley. “I find that I have a more analytical view of the world than other artists I’m around. I’ve become a more patient and thoughtful person because of this, and I hope I can continue to grow and gain more unique ways to view the world.”

“NOCCA opened so many doors for my career,” Anderson asserts. “Now I’m a kick-a** pastry chef making a place for myself

at one of Hammond’s best restaurants (One Thirteen). I always viewed myself as a leader, but the confidence I’ve gained is indescribable.”

“I got to meet and collaborate with people who work professionally in theatre both locally and around the country,” notes Garafola.

Like their peers, their junior and senior years were torpedoed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation was especially jarring since projects, performances and portfolios had to be completed virtually, which limited the creative collaboration they cherish.

“It was a strange feeling to be alone and dancing full out. I definitely missed being surrounded by the energy of my classmates,” Zaffuto shares wistfully.

Amidst longing for what was, the students found that the isolation necessitated by the pandemic also brought clarity to their career trajectories.

“I thought performing on Broadway was my endgame,” Garafola adds. “But the pandemic prompted me to experiment more with film, TV and theatre. I began tackling directing and writing for my classes. With time, I realized I cared a lot more about the art of it.”

“My art form is not just the way I feed people. It’s the way I think about food, how it’s grown, interac with other cultures and how this empowers me,” Anderson expresses.

It was February 2021 before they could safely return to campus via hybrid instruction.

“When I first returned, we were working in the studio on our thesis projects, and the Jazz students were practicing outdoors,” recounts Bradley. “Their music wrapped in with the sounds of screen prints being washed, paint brushes swishing in cups, and New Orleanians walking down the street personified what it feels like to be a NOCCA student.”

With graduation behind them, Anderson, Bradley, Garafola, and Zaffuto say they are ready to realize the best possible versions of themselves and their futures.

“What a gift to have such fantastic students from Tangipahoa Parish. They have taken full advantage of the opportunity,” asserts NOCCA President/CEO Kyle Wedberg, “They are better for the NOCCA experience, and NOCCA is better for having them as students.”

What's Next?

Charlotte Bradley will attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Digitally inclined, she has her sights set on a career that blends art and technology.

What's Next?

FIT IN.

“Come on, you got this.”

“Just a few more.”

“What a beast.”

They’re 20, 30, 40 and 50; they’re men and women; they’re weightlifters, moms, dads and professionals. And they meet on Wednesday and Saturday mornings to push each other to better fitness, endurance, and state-of-mind.

In 2017, Cate Street Seafood co-founder Jonathan Wong was looking to better himself. With a little push from his wife Trang, he realized he had been neglecting his health. He also noticed he was losing touch with friends and in somewhat of a rut. He didn’t know that small revelation would soon become FitFam, a program for all ages built around Raw Functional Training.

Wong started the program with a couple of friends, Gary Jernigan and Matt Sandifer. After a trip to California to pick up certifications in Raw Functional Training, they returned to Louisiana, eager to share what they learned. Later, Fitfamer Alex Maklary earned his certification, bringing further structure to the group.

tangi Neighbors
Story by Amber Narro | Photos by Johnny Chauvin

“These exercises include the use of your own body weight and sequencing,” Maklary said. “They offer the full package of training and endurance.”

Maklary says that Raw Functional Training, created by Da Rulk, gives him the edge he needs for fitness. While he does exercise outside of the group as well, Fitfam offers him both a cardio workout and strength training.

Fitfamer Mikey Doucet works with Jernigan and Sandifer at Cretin Townsend Homes and feels this workout offers him a strong sense of accomplishment. “It couldn’t have come at a better time for me,” he said. We push each other and get encouragement; it’s a sense of family.”

The group is 80 members strong with about 12-15 showing up for most workouts. On Wednesdays, they meet at 6 a.m. at the Southeastern parking garage; on Saturdays, the group begins at Cate Square. In inclement weather, they may move to Spoga. After every workout, those who brave the morning take a picture.

“It’s our goal to provide weekly community workouts in a family environment to be able to move and feel better,” Wong said. “We want our members to focus on what they can do today, not the future. We want them to be present in the moment.”

The exercises are built around body, mind and spirit. Kim Brannagan, a professor of healthcare leadership, has a passion for fitness. “I’m a yoga instructor at North Cypress,” she said. “I found this group through a friend in another workout group.”

Fitfam is actually her second workout on Wednesday mornings after she warms up with a 5 a.m. running group.

At 56, Kim Boudreaux isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, most may have to catch up with her. “This is a wonderful way to start the day,” she says. “It’s a true workout, and as doubt kicks in, there is someone there to bail you out.”

Wong says that’s the best part of Fitfam. “We can’t do everything, but everyone can do something,” he said. “We encourage each other, and we welcome people of all ages. The group is very diverse.”

One of the group’s most consistent members is Alicia Barnes, a faculty member at Western Governors University. She said that while she does work out at a gym, she likes that Fitfam is adaptable and offers a social outlet as well. “I had a gym-based group before I moved herew in 2014,” she said. “I like that this is adaptable and free.”

Free? Yes, it’s free. The group welcomes beginners, and the certified trainers offer alternative exercises to those who need to ease their way up to the full workout. New members should simply show up.

That price tag can attract students as well. Ruhullah Ashiru joined the group about 18 months ago. A student at Southeastern, he said the workout helps him get use out of his entire day. “It got me in the habit of waking up early,” Ashiru said. “I am much more productive on Wednesdays and Saturdays.”

So it’s 6 a.m. Wednesday morning? What’s the workout like?

This time, it’s a run from Southeastern’s parking garage over to the Katrina-Rita Fountain, 100 sit-thrus, 100 switches, and then to the tunnel for more sit-thrus and switches. Run back to the garage for a threeminute plank. Sounds easy enough. Do yourself and your body a favor. Prove it. And take a picture with your new FitFam.

WELCOME HOME, Kim Mulkey ... Time to GEAUX to Work!

Kim Mulkey is a Tangipahoa Parish native who’s been around the world and now back home to Louisiana. This “little girl from Tickfaw” sure has made our Parish proud.

After playing basketball at Nesom Junior High School in Tickfaw, she led her Hammond High School basketball team to four consecutive state championships. A Pan-American gold medalist in 1983 and Olympic gold medalist in 1984, she became the first person in NCAA women’s basketball history to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. In 1985 her 15-year coaching career at Louisiana Tech began and resulted in a 430–68 record and advanced to seven Final Fours. Mulkey and the Lady Techsters won the 1988 NCAA Championship. In 2000, Mulkey took the reins of the Baylor Lady Bears where she stacked up an impressive 632-104 record while winning three NCAA championships in 2005, 2012, and 2019. She now brings her skills and passion back home to Louisiana, where she is now the LSU Lady Tigers head coach.

“Have I said lately, it’s good to be back home?  I’m just that little girl from Tickfaw who came from humble beginnings, and I’ve never forgotten where I came from.  I spent 19 years of my life in Ruston. If you have followed my career, I’ve said it numerous times.  No matter where my career takes me, Louisiana is my home.

Tangipahoa strawberries, Louisiana crawfish  -- you think I’m being funny, but it’s just the God’s truth.  I miss my food from Louisiana.  And now I can tell Boudreaux and Thibodeaux jokes and people won’t look at me like I’ve lost my mind.

This state made me who I am, and it’s so unbelievably comfortable for me to come back to my roots.  Thank you, again, Louisiana, for bringing me home!”  -- Coach Kim Mulkey

The Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce Annie Awards, established in 1998 in honor of the late Southeastern Louisiana University Administrator Dr. Anne Ferguson, honor women who excel in their respective realms of expertise and are setting the pace for our region’s future. Since the inception of the Annie Awards, the Tangipahoa Chamber has honored over 60 women who work in excellence and have a true servant’s heart for our community.

The 2021 recipients will be recognized at a luncheon sponsored by Pratt Industries on Friday, June 4, at the

Southeastern Louisiana University Student Union Grand Ballroom. Tangi Lifestyles continues their sponsorship in honoring our “Annies” by featuring the recipients in this issue.

“We are excited to welcome long-time Louisiana State University gymnastics coach, D-D Breaux, as the featured speaker for the celebration.” said Melissa Bordelon, Tangipahoa Chamber CEO. “We know her message will be uplifting and enjoyed by all who attend. Call the Tangipahoa Chamber at 985-345-4457 for more information on ticket availability.

Coach D-D Breaux Keynote Speaker

For forty-three seasons D-D Breaux led LSU gymnastics to one of the top programs in the nation. A collegiate gymnast in her own right, Breaux competed two seasons for Southeastern Louisiana University. Her coaching career began in Hammond, Louisiana, as an assistant for the Lady Lions and helped SLU to a second-place finish at the 1972 AIAW Championships. She began her Hall of Fame career at Louisiana State University in 1978 and retired in 2020 as the longest tenured coach in the history of the Southeastern Conference. The Donaldsonville native has represented the University at the highest level in competition and in the community. During her tenure, she maintained LSU’s reputation as one of the premier programs in the country with more than 800 wins under her leadership. The Tigers placed among the top-10 teams nationally 31 times in 43 seasons with program-best second place finishes in 2016, 2017 and 2019, third in 2014, fourth in 1988 and 2018, fifth in 2008 and 2013 and sixth on four separate occasions. D-D continues to live in Baton Rouge and works with Tiger Athletic Foundation and LSU Athletics as an ambassador for the program. When she is not cheering on every LSU sport, you can find Breaux hanging out with her grandkids.

GINA ANTHON

Gina Lottinger Anthon loves to bring people together through music. Originally from Houma, she moved to Hammond to study music education at Southeastern. After attending graduate school in Michigan, she returned to marry her college sweetheart, George Anthon.

Though originally set to teach applied voice at the university level, she was drawn by the lack of elementary music education in the local schools. This led Gina to teach elementary music at Southeastern Lab School and Holy Ghost Catholic School, as well as Music Fundamentals for Elementary Education majors at SLU. She became a well-known advocate for best practices in music education and helped establish the Red Stick Chapter of the OrffSchulwerk Association in South Louisiana.

Gina has been a vital part of the music and outreach ministries of First Christian Church in Hammond including starting summer music camps. Her passion prompted her to teach Kindermusik Classes, develop the children’s choir at the Southeastern Community Music School, direct the Options Drum Circle and Choir, and engage seniors in song at the Summerfield Assisted Living Center.

Officer down. Get Acadian en route!

On May 20, 2020, that call went out over the Louisiana State Police radio. Trooper George Baker, while helping a local police department with a high-speed chase, was struck by a vehicle while retrieving a spike strip. He was immediately transferred to a hospital and four days later, Trooper Baker succumbed to his injuries.

“George’s goal had always been to serve in the Louisiana State Police,” said his wife, Heather. “I can say he died doing the job he loved.”

A native of Albany, George and Heather met in the sixth grade. They went their separate ways but were later reunited. They started seeing each before George was deployed to

Operation Iraq Freedom in 2007 while serving in the United States Marine Corps.

After being honorably discharged, George felt the call to become a police officer with his eye on one day joining the State Police. He started working in the Greensburg Police Department and later transferred to the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office and was promoted the K-9 Division.

In 2018, Baker joined the Louisiana State Police Training Academy and became a trooper on March 23, 2018.

Life was good for Trooper Baker and Heather. Their daughter, Harper, was born in 2016 and he was at his dream job.

All that changed on that fateful May night.

After getting to the hospital, it was the start of four tortuous days. Not knowing what the next step would be, Heather did know that George would not want to live hooked to a machine, but she needed a sign.

“While listening to old phone messages, I found one he left when he was in the state police academy. He said, ‘Hey Babe, just wanted to let you know that I’m ok. Give Harper a kiss for me. I love you. I don’t know when I’ll be able to call again’. This gave me the strength to make the decision to let George go peacefully.”

George passed away and his organs were donated. A full police funeral was held in the Southeastern Louisiana University Center. Trooper Baker was awarded the Life Saving Award and his badge, L-36 was retired.

A few weeks later, the family of fallen Mandeville Police Department’s Vincent Liberto reached out to provide support. After meeting with the Liberto’s, Heather knew her next step. She wanted to establish a non-profit foundation to help the families of Louisiana first responders who are killed in the line of duty.

Heather and her family and friends started the L-36 Warrior’s Way Foundation. The foundation’s first beneficiary was the family of slain Tulane Police Officer Martinus Mitchen who was shot and killed while providing security at a high school basketball game in 2021.

“We are still meeting with his family on ways we can help. Our goal is to be here to help, and we hope this is our first and only family of a fallen Louisiana first responder we ever have to help. Unfortunately we know it won’t be”.

New children's home to provide residential therapeutic services for local youth.

Having provided nearly 120 years of ministry to Louisiana’s children and families, Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services (LUMCFS) takes the long view, and prepares today for the next 100 years of service. LUMCFS is expanding its care into the southeast region of the state with the construction of a new children’s home in Robert.

Abused, neglected and abandoned children often suffer from behavioral health issues. LUMCFS offers quality psychiatric treatment from licensed nurses and therapists to help these children at Medicaidfunded facilities in Ruston, Sulphur, Mandeville and soon in Robert.

“The philosophy of the children’s home is this child needs to understand what’s going on with him. We’re going to give him some tools to figure out how to control that. He’s going to understand that he’s a unique child of God in the process,” said Patrick Blanchard, Director of Public Relations and Development.

Frank A Anzalone General Contractors, Inc. broke ground in the fall of 2020 for the first phase of construction for the 126-acre campus. Phase II of construction is now in development and estimated to finish in late summer.

The completed facility, designed by Ellender Architects, LLC and Moss Architects Inc, will include a dormitory area, a chapel, classrooms, recreational areas, a 24-hour nursing clinic as well as offices for the experienced therapists.

In addition to the economic benefits, the facility will bring local and state tax benefits for Tangipahoa Parish over the next 10 years: $1.2 million and $2.6 million, respectively.

Marlin Giaconna, Program Director for the new location, commented on the organization’s dedication to the health and well-being of children and their families. She described the work that they do as a calling rather than a regular profession.

Giaccona said, “... To make an impact and have a long-standing role in an agency like this it is because you’ve been called to do this work. We just have to be faithful servants, God has laid out the plan, and we have to be faithful in the journey to get there.”

LUMCFS, a nonprofit organization, is receiving no public funding to build the facility but rather relies on savings and outside donations. They are currently raising funds to aid the completion of the project.

Blanchard said, “We’re licensed with the Louisiana Department of Health to provide psychiatric residential care that’s all Medicaidfunded fee-for-service. We don’t need money to run the program, but we do need funds to help us build it.”

LUMCFS also provides statewide therapeutic foster care. Methodist Foster Care is Louisiana’s largest and most innovative therapeutic foster care agency. The children served come from difficult places and all are welcome! Families care for children throughout Louisiana, and they reflect the diverse demographics of the state.

Those interested in supporting the new children’s home can send donations to LUMCFS at ATTN: New Children's Home, P.O. Box 929, Ruston, LA 71273 or donate online at www.LUMCFS.org/Donate.

For additional questions, contact Blanchard at 318-242-4622 or NewHome@LMCH.org.

Choosing to focus on

LIFE

Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home

When Brandon and Martha Thompson dreamed of opening a funeral business, they envisioned one like no other. Brandon comes from a long line of builders and Martha is a fourth generation funeral director. The couple combined their legacies, talents and skills to build their dream. Yes, it had to be a sacred place where families could gather to honor and remember their loved ones, but they wanted their funeral home to be more than just that. Rather than solely focusing on death, Thompson Funeral Home focuses on life… respecting life, honoring life, and celebrating life. This unique perspective, along with continuous strides for excellence, and an unending commitment to the community has quickly helped propel the firm to be a leader in the field.

It has been 15 years since the doors of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home’s first location in Hammond opened. At 15,000 square feet, the newest and largest facility in Denham Springs officially opened on March 10, 2020; coincidentally, Covid-19 was deemed a global pandemic the very next day. After a year delay, the highly anticipated Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was celebrated on May 10, 2021.

With facilities in Hammond, Ponchatoula, and Denham Springs, along with a fully operational monument division, the business has continued to flourish and has earned some of the most prestigious awards in the industry. In fact, after being named, “Best of the Best “ by the National Funeral Directors Association two years in a row, Martha was invited to join the Pursuit of Excellence Task Force Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and critiquing funeral homes from all over the world. Last year, Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home was inducted into the National Funeral Directors Association’s Hall of Excellence for its display of professional and ethical experience for the past decade. In addition, the funeral home was recognized as Ponchatoula’s 2018 Business of the Year, and named Best Funeral Home of Tangipahoa Parish for the past four consecutive years.

The Thompsons realize people have a choice in funeral homes and they appreciate the trust placed in them and the overwhelming support they’ve received from the community. Selecting a funeral home is not a decision to be taken lightly, so what should you consider when choosing a funeral home?

Who will be taking care of you and your loved ones?

The Thompson Team is comprised of the best and brightest in the field. But just as important as education and intelligence, each and every member of the Thompson Team has the heart to serve others, is passionate about the work they do, and is driven to exceed expectations. Rest assured, when you place your trust in the compassionate and caring Thompson Team, you and your loved ones are in the very best of hands.

How are the facilities?

No detail was overlooked in the design of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home’s three locations. The facilities are beautiful, immaculate, and full of southern charm. They provide the perfect environment for families to gather, to laugh, cry and say their last goodbyes. All three funeral homes are incredibly accommodating to people of all ages, with the playrooms being among the most popular and well-loved amenities.

Does

the funeral home invest in the community?

Since day one, Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home has been committed to making the community a better place to live. In addition to proudly supporting many local charities, clubs, and organizations, the funeral home hosts many activities and events, including monthly grief support group meetings, Christmas Remembrance Programs, Open Houses, Chamber After Hours, luncheons, and educational workshops. You can even find Little Free Libraries at each facility and the Tender, Love, and Share Community Garden in Hammond.

Tangipahoa Parish Emergency Operations Center

The HUB of Hurricane Activities

Hurricane and emergency preparedness is the day-to-day responsibility of Dawson Primes, the Director of the Tangipahoa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office and his Assistant Director, Vicki Travis. They have created, improved, and maintained the “playbook” for any type of emergency.

“Everyone knows our office during hurricanes, but we are prepared for all types of emergencies,” said Primes. “Train derailments, chemical spills on the interstate, floods and even pandemics all fall under our area of expertise and responsibility for emergency response and recovery.”

The hub of emergency operations is the Tangipahoa Parish Emergency Operations Center in Amite.

The Center has been specially designed and built for the main purpose of being the gathering point for emergency personnel during a disaster.

Primes said the building is specially constructed to withstand 200 MPH winds and a F-4 tornado. The center is a two-story facility that has sleeping quarters upstairs along with enough food on hand to feed fifty people three meals a day for three days. Additionally, the center can be self-contained with backup generators, water supplies and an air handling system to prevent outside air from penetrating the interior.

“We certainly have a great building, but it’s the trained emergency personnel who come together during an emergency that makes this place run smoothly and effectively.”

When a hurricane is twenty-four hours from making impact in Tangipahoa Parish, Parish President Robby Miller will authorize the opening of the Operations Center. Then a number of experts begin to occupy the center.

There are four divisions with specific duties that work in the Operations Center. The Emergency Services Division is comprised of members from the Sheriff’s Office, State Police, Fire Districts, Wildlife and Fisheries, National Guard and 911 Communications to prepare for the emergency response. The next is the Infrastructure Division comprised of members of the parish’s public works department, Department of Transportation, Entergy, Atmos, and communications companies and their job is start on the recovery

A VOICE STORM during the

Hurricane season is here and now is the time to start your preparations in the event a hurricane comes our way.

Over the years, local radio stations WFPR, WHMD and WTGG have been, and continues to be, the main source of emergency information for our parish. Radio provides immediate information from a number of trusted official sources regardless of power outages in the area.

The local radio stations broadcast when families are out of electricity and now radio programing can be streamed through mobile devices.

“Local radio provides two things in the time of an emergency. The first is the most current information, and the second, which I think is equally important, is a voice to reassure, explain and inform our listeners. It’s the one medium with a human trait,” said Northshore Broadcasting General Manager Brian Shirey.

phase following a storm. The third is Mass Care and Shelter which is comprised of school system employees, Red Cross and other agencies that are responsible for opening and maintaining shelters before, during and after a storm. The fourth division is the Operations Division which is the logistic hub during and after the storm for rescue and providing assistance in the recovery efforts.

The Tangipahoa Parish Office Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness does an incredible job in leading the efforts for hurricanes and other natural and man-made disasters. They have been recognized nationally and by the State of Louisiana. Many of their protocols have been used by other parishes for emergency preparedness and recovery.

“We have a great group of professionals who are dedicated to the safety and well being of our families. We are asking everyone now to prepare for the Hurricane Season and make a hurricane survival kit for you and your family. Preparation now is better than having to prepare before an emergency later.

During the time of natural emergencies, Northshore Broadcasting mans the airwaves 24 hours a day. They also have a redundancy plan and can broadcast from one of their Mississippi sister stations.

Shirey also points out that Tangipahoa Parish has an older population that rely on the radio stations for their information.

“We receive a tremendous number of calls after a storm thanking us for being on the air to provide vital information. We certainly appreciate the feedback, but our staff feels we are playing a vital role in the safety and well-being of our families and businesses in Tangipahoa and the surrounding parishes. I just want everyone to know, we are here and ready to be on the air and informed during the upcoming hurricane season.”

Restore and Refresh with Skin Resurfacing

After hiding behind masks for so long now, many of us are eager to show our faces again. But none of us want our skin to look as worn out as we have felt over this “long COVID winter.” Thankfully, there is no need to trade in the wrinkles for new skin since facial resurfacing can help you to look and feel fresh faced again.

The gold standard in skin resurfacing is the CO2 laser. With the dramatic results that can be achieved by ablating wrinkles and blemishes comes the tradeoff of down time for recovery and risk of scarring certain skin types. Increasingly popular are fractional laser treatments, which narrows down the laser energy. This means that recovery is faster, but more than one treatment may be needed for optimal results. Microneedling is safe for all skin types, has little to no down time, and is typically performed as a treatment series. At QnA, we are so happy to offer several options when it comes to skin resurfacing. Depending on the severity of skin damage, magnitude of result desired, and ability to accommodate down time, one of our board certified dermatologists will discuss which option is best for you. We definitely want to see your face soon!

He loves the history which he’s surrounded by while sitting in the House Chamber. It is truly an unbelievable experience, and he’s honored to serve. He never takes the experience for granted and enjoys every day that he’s there.

Annual Vacation with Friends

Every year his friends and their families make a point to take a vacation as a group. The trip is something they look forward to, and they always have a great time. It is a large group, and rest assured, there is never a dull moment.

Nicky always enjoys spending time in his hometown, whether it is taking a bike ride or walking to a restaurant. He knows we have such a great community and feels blessed to call it his home.
