WE LOVE LIVING HERE! Tangipahoa is the place we all choose to call home and this magazine is dedicated to celebrating some of the best things about our parish. As we do on our radio stations daily, each issue of Tangi Lifestyles celebrates our local schools, business, social organizations, civic groups and people of interest. Some of the stories in this issue shine a light on the Town of Independence, take a peek into a Ponchatoula performing arts studio and celebrate a couple of local high school state champions. We also help kick off the school year and the high school and college football seasons with team previews. We hope you enjoy.

Beginning August 26th, be sure to tune in to Tangi 96.5 and Kajun 107.1 each Friday night to listen to a local high school game of the week and tune into Kajun 107.1 as we broadcast all of SLU’s football games!!

We all know that it’s hurricane season. Please take time to read our local hurricane prep guide in this issue and be sure to download the Tangi965 and Kajun107 apps so you can listen anywhere you have internet or cell service. It wouldn’t hurt to invest in a small battery-powered radio so when the power, internet and cell service are interrupted you'll still have us.

We have so many good things happening in our community! We encourage our readers to send us pictures to include in our Seen & Heard section; to send us ideas for stories you’d like to read and to send us your events for our calendar of events. Send all to events@tangilifestyles.com. We’re proud to call Tangipahoa home. Buy local. Be local. Promote local. We do it every day. We hope you will, too!

Story by Nick Gagliano
Cause They Are Gonna' Talk About Ya Anywayz”
Photos by Johnny Chauvin

“No one thought I could make it as the sole owner of Victory Home Center, that makes me unique. I am proud to say I’m the only female single owner retail dealer in the state of Louisiana.”

She vividly remembers hearing the comments behind her back when she entered the male-dominant industry.

“Give her two weeks and she’ll be gone.”

“She doesn’t know what she’s doing.”

“No woman can make it in this business.”

That’s when Connie adopted her business and personal philosophy, “Doux Youx, Cause They Are Gonna Talk About You Anywayz.”

Victory Home Center is a manufactured home retailer serving Louisiana. They have become one of the nation’s largest single-lot housing retailers.

As an independent dealer, Connie and her team represent the widest manufactured home selections, and premier quality manufactured homes. Their Hammond location has one of the largest selection of homes in southeast Louisiana.

If a customer does not see what they are looking for, chances are Victory Home Center can order it for them. They even have several manufacturers that will let the customer design and customize their own floor plan.

Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, Connie married in 2000 and started their own dealership. She then divorced in 2017 and bought out her ex-husband in 2018 changing the name to Victory

Home Center. Now, 22 years later and she is still an industry leader.

“It wasn’t always easy but people who know me know I am driven and focused on achieving my goal,” said Connie, "I was told if anyone can do it, you can."

She formed her team, and it was not long before she realized she wanted and needed new team members. Connie made the decision to keep one loyal team member and then put together a team that was dedicated to customer service and who shared the same goals and business mission as she did.

After the staffing upheavel, Connie came to the realization that if she failed, she would still be okay because she had done it her way.

“I felt good about my decision, I was not worried, and I was ready to move this company forward to be the success I dreamed it could be," said Connie, "While the whispers of doubt were present as I was prophesized over two different times that not everyone here can go where God wants to take you and Victory Home Center." This was my confirmation from God that I needed the team that can go where God wants to lead.

The success of Victory Home Center is the fact that the team genuinely cares about their customers and want to help match them to the perfect manufactured homes that meet their needs and stays within their budget. This is the mission of Victory Home Center.

“Our customers come from all walks of life, and I know you can’t really know what’s going on in their lives, but I do know we are here to help them purchase a new home. They also know we will tell them the truth

and we will always do what is in their best interest. It’s more than making a sale…it’s about making a friend who will trust you and your team.”

Connie Thomas is now known around town and her social media presence has given her the confidence and fortitude to keep striving for success.

“I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and doing what it takes to get the job done.”

When her sales lot needed some maintenance, it was Connie who jumped on her tractor and brought load after load of dirt and gravel to clean up her facility. Many people would pass by and see her on the tractor working and when it was posted on social media, she became an internet sensation.

“It’s been fun being recognized because I know my roots. I was working on my tractor one day and a family stopped in their car. The mom got out and said her eleven-year-old son just wanted to meet the lady who drives the tractor. That made my week!”

Even though Connie has a new tractor specially designed with a FABCON and diamonds wrap, she still is committed to her customers and her team. The Victory Home Center Team will continue to create a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere for the families looking to purchase a manufactured home.

And for the lady who is Sassy, Classy and a little Smart A$$y, she’ll let you know very quickly, “I’m Fabcon and I Sell Mobile Homes.”

LION UP!

Frank Scelfo will be entering into his fifth season as head coach of Southeastern this fall, and up to this point, Coach Scelfo has delivered on his initial goals when coming to Hammond. From his introductory press conference, coach Scelfo has made a few goals clear: compete for Conference Championships, be recognized nationally, and improve recruiting within Louisiana. Southeastern is one of six schools within the FCS to have finished each of the last three seasons in the FCS Top 25 poll making being recognized nationally undoubtedly an obtained goal. Now, the question on the minds of many Lions fans is: Where does Southeastern go from here?

Over 70% of the student-athletes on Southeastern’s roster in 2021 were Louisiana high school products, along with the same number being achieved for their scholarship players. Coach Scelfo is now challenging Hammond and the rest of the Lion Nation for the 2022 season to pack The Berry. Our Lions have been built to be a nationally-competitive team over the last 4 seasons, they’re made up primarily of Louisiana talent, and feeling the crowd support on game day is the last ingredient needed to bring home a Southland Conference championship.

Whether it’s the Saints or LSU we’ve seen the effect that a packed stadium of energized fans can have on games in Louisiana, and Southeastern can be no different. Game day on the campus of Southeastern has all the components necessary to have any fan hooked once they’ve gotten to experience it. A truly family-friendly tailgating experience prior to every home game, the tradition of the Lion Walk through Friendship Circle a couple hours before kick-off, and of course, a team capable of sending its fans home happy

with a win having done so seven times in their last eight home games, including a playoff win over Florida A&M.

As for the product on the field in 2022, there is undoubtedly some big shoes to fill as 2020 Walter Payton award winner Cole Kelley has moved on to the Washington Commanders of the NFL. While the absence of Kelley and several other Lion greats such as Austin Mitchell will be tough departures to replace, but plenty of talent remains loaded on the 2022 roster for Southeastern. CJ Turner returns this season already making his mark in the all-time record books placing top 5 in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in Lion history with the opportunity to finish his career ranked number one across the board. Ferlando Jordan, who is already the all-time Southeastern and Southland Conference leader in interceptions returned for a touchdown also returns giving both fans and Southeastern coaches a proven veteran to rely on, on each side of the ball.

There was plenty of optimism around the Lions coming out of spring training, and now we head into an exciting fall with Southeastern ranked 19th and 20th in the Athlon Sports and Hero Sports Top 25 polls, respectively. Will Ceephus Johnson continue his development and be the next starting QB for the Lions, or will someone else step up to be the main signal caller for Southeastern? There may be questions around this Southeastern football team, but after 4 seasons we know we can expect to see a fun exciting style of play, and a team that will be in contention for the Southland Conference trophy and ranked on a national level. Now, it’s just up to the fans to bring an electric game day atmosphere and see how far these Lions can go.

ALBANY Hornets AMITE Warriors

Head Coach: John Legoria Head Coach: Zephaniah Powell

David Knight resigned as head coach of the Albany Hornets following the 2021 season, and Albany didn’t take long to promote within as John Legoria now takes the helm as head coach for the Hornets. It’s Legoria’s first time being a head football coach after having previously been head coach for baseball, softball, and cross country teams in his career. Legoria has also spent time as both offensive and defensive coordinator for Albany, and brings experience having coached every position on the field. We may not know what to expect from Albany, but there’s one thing Legoria has nailed on as a goal: Bring back pride, and fun to the game of football.

2021 record: 1-8

State championships will never be a small accomplishment, but when you do it like the Amite Warriors, it’s starts to feel less special and more expected. Not to say that the warriors run in 2021 wasn’t special. It just simply wasn’t surprising to anyone who has followed football in Tangipahoa over the last decade. Not much changes in 2022. You know what you get from Amite every year, a top 10 team in class 2A, and if things fall their way, a team that competes for a state championship.

HAMMOND Tornadoes

Head Coach: Dorsett Buckels

There’s two elements to building a successful football program, culture and winning. Battling through the adversity of the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Dorsett Buckels managed to do both improving on the prior seasons win total, while slowly building a culture and family feel for the Hammond Tornadoes. There’s no escaping one of the toughest districts Class 5A has to offer, but don’t write off this Hammond High team from making some noise in District 6.

INDEPENDENCE Tigers

Head Coach: Scott Shaffett

Coach Scott Shaffett managed to get Independence back into the playoffs last season, a valuable teaching experience for this young Tigers program. Midway through the 2020 season, Shaffett made the uneasy decision to point his eyes towards the future when his freshman and sophomore classes began showing signs of greatness. You can’t coach heart and will power, and those underclassmen that flashed two seasons ago now come into the 2022 season as Juniors and Seniors ready to make their mark.

JEWEL SUMNER Cowboys

Head Coach: Ross Currier

Sumner spent three years fighting and clawing for everything they could, and the hard work has paid off after back-toback playoff runs in the last two seasons. The Cowboys will look to keep their recent success going, and see if, just like others in this area, they can begin working towards elevating to that next level in 2022.

KENTWOOD Kangaroos

Head Coach: Jonathan Foster

Kentwood is another Tangipahoa representative in the “always playing past Thanksgiving” crowd. Coach Jonathan Foster has built what many other local coaches are trying to: a year in and year out district contender and playoff participant. Things may have gotten rough to end the year, but the team feels good about seeing Kentwood once the playoffs have begun. Look for the trend to continue in 2022.

Loranger Wolves Head Coach Sammy Messina has done it before, and it won’t be surprising in the slightest if he does it again. In 2018 Loranger finished 2-8, a year later the Wolves came back a year older, wiser, and stronger powering their way to a perfect 10-0 season. While the wins have been a grind to get since replacing that senior heavy team, Loranger hopes to try and capture the magic they had once again in 2022.

OAK FOREST Yellow Jackets

Head Coach: Drew Misita

2021 was a return to form for the Yellow Jackets losing only one game in the regular season after sweeping district play and earning a district title. Oak Forest comes into 2022 looking to improve on the ground work established a season ago, and if they can get things clicking at the right time, they’re a serious contender to put a run together in the playoffs and vie for a state championship.

2021 record: 2-7

Head Coach: Trey Willie

PONCHATOULA Green Wave 2021

It was a magical season for the Greenwave a year ago, and although Ponchatoula came up just short in its championship aspirations, it was a run to the dome that’ll have fans talking for years to come. Now, a year later, a lot has changed. Many seniors are off to playing on Saturdays and long-time coach Hank Tierney has left as well. Former SLU QB Trey Willie now steps in as head coach after spending the last few seasons as Offensive Coordinator and QB coach. It’ll be exciting to see what Willie does to leave his impression on this football team.

SPRINGFIELD Bulldogs ST. HELENA Hawks

Head Coach: Ryan Serpas

A year after losing nearly the entire last month of the season due to COVID, the Bulldogs made up for lost time by getting into the playoffs in 2021. Springfield has been through the ringer over the last few seasons and now, hopefully following a playoff run, Coach Serpas can continue to improve year by year and make a deep run.

Head Coach: Christopher Gordon

Christopher Gordon now takes over following Brandon Mitchell’s tenure as head coach of the Hawks. Repeated trips to the playoffs over the last decade will have fans' expectations high, but hopefully Gordon can get a prolonged amount of time to build up this program in his image. District play will always remain tough, but hopefully in a few seasons, they can be back at the level of competition they were with Amite just a few seasons ago.

2021 record: 4-4*

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Falcons

Head Coach: Randell Legette

It’s all about improving to an elite level now for the Falcons. St. Thomas has solidified themselves as the top team in their district, despite years of expecting a drop off following big senior departures. District titles and trips to the playoffs are now expected year-in and year-out, and getting that next step into a deep playoff run is the goal for the Falcons.

Celebrating 30 Years

Celebrating 30 Years

It was August 1992 when Connie came home and told me about a small t-shirt shop for sale in Amite. Well, the rest is history. Not that our lives weren’t already busy, we were dairy farmers, owned a dozer service, and Connie had a successful hair salon at the time. From the small t-shirt shop came what Connie’s Impressions/ CI Sports is today -- one of the largest corporate promotional product companies in South Louisiana which ships products across the country.

Connie and I were on top of the world with three daughters Jennifer, Kelsey, and Shelby and then tragedy struck our family. We lost Jennifer in a car accident, and Kelsey was in the hospital for six weeks. Kelsey showed me a shirt that she had made in crafts and told me, “Daddy, this is our new logo.” It had a frog on it with a CI over it, as you still see as our logo today. She continued, “Jennifer collected frogs, and it has to have a smile because Jennifer always signed her letters with a smiley face.” Our frog will always be our logo, always smiling at us. Connie added, “Even when I am embroidering our logo on items, I still see that smile on our frog!”

When it comes to advertising your business, we are your onestop-shop. Our embroidery department now has 13 machines. Our screenprinting department now includes two automatics and three manual presses. In addition, our services also include laser engraving, signs and banners, DTG printing, trophies, and awards, as well as promotional products from ink pens to caps and cups. If you see it printed, we offer it. Our graphics department can take your logo and put it on almost anything, including your fleet of vehicles.

Connie’s Impressions was not only built for the corporate world but also small businesses, schools, and organizations. We offer free websites to our corporate/business accounts so your employees can buy your swag directly from the website without you carrying inventory.

... Not just our business has grown!

We are so blessed, and as we celebrate thirty years this August, we can’t help but give God all the glory and sincerely thank our loyal customers. Because of you, Connie’s Impressions/CI Sports has grown into one of the largest businesses of its kind in the south. We look forward to serving you for the next 30 years! Let us take your brand to the next level.

JAYDEN HAUCK

While other graduates are enjoying the summer holiday, Jayden Hauck has been busy winning the 2022 National High School Bowling Championship. She competed in the singles only competition which consisted of 258 high school girls from all over the United States including Hawaii.

When asked how she felt after winning Jayden humbly replied, "I was surprised to win. I didn't think I would be as good as all of the competitors."

Jayden is extremely happy with the win, but she has moved on with her sights now set on winning the Junior Gold competition coming up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Recently graduated from Hammond High School, Jayden will attend Southern University in Baton Rouge this fall to continue her education and her bowling career.

We wish Jayden all the best with her future and can't wait to see her bowling down the competition.

2022 Nike Outdoor National Champion BEAU DOMINGUE

Beau Domingue, a recent graduate of Hammond High School, not only won the 2022 State Champion Pole Vault title, he also won the boys pole vault with a first-attempt clearance at 16'8" at the Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Making him the first male athlete from Louisiana to win the pole vault title since Devin King in 2014.

Beau started pole vaulting in the 8th grade after learning about the sport from a family friend who also vaulted for LSU. Once he decided he'd like to compete in the sport, he found a club in Tickfaw, the Louisiana Pole Vault Coupound, that helped him reach his full potential.

When asked who he credits with helping him along the way he quickly replied, "My coaches from Hammond High and all of my family and friends who encouraged me over the years. I wouldn't be where I am without them. "

Beau added, " I want to continue doing well to represent my home town and my home state throughout my career."

Beau will be attending LSU with a full scholarship in the fall to continue his career where he intends to study Construction Management. We will be watching to see him soar into his future as he proudly represents Hammond, America.

Hammond Mayor Pete Panepinto — A PASSIONATE LEADER

Hammond Mayor Pete Panepinto’s passion for the people in the City of Hammond can’t be contained. Anyone who has ever had the chance to talk to Mayor Pete leaves the conversation with the same thought-- that Mayor Pete loves his city, and I am sure he will do whatever it takes for the citizens.

Not only does Mayor Pete talk the talk, but he also walks the walk.

Panepinto first came to Hammond to visit a good friend, Russell Ribando. The more time he spent here, the more he wanted to stay. He enrolled in Southeastern Louisiana University, and he immediately became a part of the community as a Southeastern graduate and business owner.

His first exposure to local politics was the time he met Debbie Saik, a future mayor of Hammond.

“I was living at the University Apartments and a lady approached me. She told me to be sure to take care of her aunts who had lived at the apartments since 1961, and I told her I certainly would do so. I asked her name and she said, ‘I am Debbie Saik’. Little did I know what the future would hold.”

Saik later followed her father’s, Sam Saik, footsteps and was elected Mayor of Hammond. Panepinto said he followed her political career and was impressed how one person can make a difference to the community. Mayor Debbie Saik cut the ribbon on Pete's first business when he was 25 years old.

Iam a passionate guy,” said Mayor Panepinto. “I fell in love with this city 42 years ago, and today I feel the same passion as day one. I want to help the good people of Hammond enjoy their life here and help our businesses grow and succeed.”

Panepinto’s own interest began when his son started playing baseball in the Hammond Recreation Department’s league and he saw the sad shape the fields were in.

“I knew I had to get involved because so many of our baseball players were leaving Hammond to play elsewhere. I met with the mayor, and we discussed upgrading our facilities for all the families in Hammond. Parks and recreation are critical for families in a community.”

It was this interaction that lit the fire for Mayor Pete. He became more involved in the community while expanding his businesses in the community. A few years later, Hammond Mayor Mayson Foster met with Pete and asked him to run for mayor since Mayor Foster was term limited.

Photos by Johnny Chauvin

“I was honored that he thought that much of me to ask, but I told him I needed more experience to prepare for the job. Mayor Foster asked me to be his Director of Administration for two years so that I would gain the working knowledge of the ins-and-outs of city government. I couldn’t pass that opportunity up, so I joined Team Hammond as the City Administrator.”

Foster was Panepinto’s mentor during those two years and when Panepinto ran for Mayor in 2014, he was elected without a run-off earning 59% of the votes.

In his eight years as mayor, Mayor Panepinto has been a driving force in creating new programs and expanding the economic footprint of the city while maintaining the small-town quality of life that attracts families to the area.

Under the mayor’s direction, the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport has grown to be a major boost for the city’s economy and reputation. The airport is now the busiest general aviation airport in the state. Its air traffic control tower and dual-lighted runways, make it ideal for general, corporate, governmental, and military aircraft.

“As a licensed pilot, flying has always been one thing I love to do. I saw the potential of our airport growing with the right leadership and now we have a great airport that handles a large number of private and corporate jets that land here for the convenience and our location.”

Panepinto also points to the fact when there is a major event in New Orleans like the Super Bowl or NCAA Final Four, the airport is the preferred landing spot for these jets. These corporate giants then get to see Hammond for the first time and Panepinto says we become more than just a dot on a map.

Another success for Mayor Pete in upgrading the airport is the re-introduction of the Hammond Air Show which is one of the largest airshows in the region.

“I always knew the Air Show would be a huge success if we could get it back. I worked with the late Frank van Mullen, and we went to Las Vegas to a major Airshow Convention. After the convention I knew we could make it happen. Unfortunately, Frank passed away before the air show, but he pointed me in the right direction and 2021 was our largest air show with over 75,000 people attending over two days.”

While contemplating the many successes in the last eight years, Mayor Pete clicks through a long list of accomplishments.

• The Hammond Downtown is vibrant and was awarded one of the best Downtowns in America.

• The creation of the Hammond After School Program that serves over 100 children each year.

• Hammond Square Mall and the small and big businesses in Hammond continuing to grow and prosper. Unique large employers like Wayfair, Pratt Industries, and Medline.

• Much of the city’s old infrastructure — sewer especially — is being replaced and upgraded to accommodate growth.

• The parks, playgrounds, ballfields, and green spaces in the city are being updated and expanded while being enjoyed by families.

The city has a great working relationship with Tangipahoa Parish Government, other local municipalities, the Tangipahoa Parish School System, Southeastern Louisiana University, and the Northshore Technical Community College.

A major accomplishment that many families in Hammond still remember is Mayor Pete’s response after Hurricane Ida. Mayor Pete was not leading from his office; he was leading the recovery efforts on the streets — whether using a chainsaw to clear roads, distributing supplies, or monitoring contractors.

“It was definitely an all-hands-on-deck moment. Our dedicated city staff were working 24 hours a day, and I was right there with them working to get our lights, internet, roads, and basic services up and operational.”

Mayor Pete laughs that he also had to “intervene” when he encountered a few unscrupulous tree

removal companies taking advantage of our people. He went toe-to-toe with them and said he would not allow them to rip-off unsuspecting families who were going through one of their roughest times following the hurricane.

Mayor Pete has quite an impressive list of accomplishments, but there is a separate side to Mayor Pete that is just as passionate. It’s his family.

“Wow. What can I say? When it comes to my family, I am a blessed man for sure.”

Pete and his wife, Dawn, have two sons and are now the proud grandparents of their first grandson, Cooper. Family is so important to Pete that both his mother and Dawn’s mother live with them. He built a special Mother-in-law cottage for the two women he affectionately refers to as “his ladies” so they can care for them on a daily basis.

This makes three generations of Panepintos living in Hammond.

Mayor Pete has plans to continue to lead the City of Hammond with the commitment and passion he has demonstrated during his years as a family man, businessman, and Mayor.

Mayor Pete Panepinto wants everyone to remember, “Hammond is a great place to live, work, and play for every generation.”

I'm FINE.

Several weeks ago I was feeling a little off and like most I brushed it off thinking, it's normal to feel this way, I'm just busy. Sadly, we live in a society that glorifies a busy life, because being busy must correlate to productivity and a sense of purpose, right? When asked how we are doing we routinely respond with "busy" or "I'm good". Questions that should be met with honest self evaluation have now become reactionary responses that enable us to live our lives on autopilot, avoiding the truth and pushing us closer to self destruction.

Self awareness is being able to look inward and see clearly the areas that need attention. It requires laying aside all excuses and pride that would allow justification for shortcomings or deficits. It's taking responsibility and refusing to blame shift for the sake of ego. Self awareness is the ability to take an honest look at your life without any attachment to it being right or wrong, good or bad. We must be willing to examine our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

In order to truly be well we must be able to see ourselves clearly; remove the blinders, turn off autopilot and get really good at being honest. We can leave no stone, however good, bad, or ugly it is, unturned and once we do, we must be willing to do something about it. God is always waiting for us to trust Him, give Him every part of ourselves so He can make us whole.

Let's stop celebrating being busy as a measurement of importance, instead let's take time to make ourselves and those around us a priority. Be intentional in looking inward and reaching outward to those around you. Now more than ever we must be willing to love ourselves and others enough to be honest and willing to have hard conversations.

"For no one ever hated his own body, but [instead] he nourishes and protects and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,"

Swamplight Theater –A Legacy in the Making

Swamplight Theater came out of the Kay Butler Performing Arts Project, a 501(c)3 that hosted drama camps for young people.

“I was in New York for 30 years, moved home, and Barbie and I said, let’s do this. We’re here. We’re together. Now it’s time to do it,” Kendel Smith, one of the theater’s administrators, says.

Barbie Vallot is the late Kay Butler’s daughter. “Our mission is to identify interest and talent in the community and provide a safe place for our youth to express themselves and perform,” she adds. “My mom believed, and we believe, that whether you ever want to act or do anything professionally, that’s not the issue. It’s being in the public, learning how to perform, do public speaking, being in front of an audience, being with a group of safe, loving people. It can only make you a better person, a well-rounded human being.”

One of the driving principles of Swamplight Theater is that performing arts can make people better.

Along with Kendel and Barbie, Barbie’s daughter, Chloe Vallot, and Josiah Rogers round out the team.

TANGILIFESTYLES.COM 28

A DRIVING PRINCIPLE OF SWAMPLIGHT THEATER IS THAT PERFORMING ARTS CAN MAKE PEOPLE BETTER.

Kendel continues, “Miss Kay told me, ‘You need to understand what we do here is teach compassion and empathy.’ Because some people don’t understand that what you do is a wave, and it ripples out and affects everyone around you.”

The theater also hosts an active performing arts school, administered by Josiah Rogers and Chloe Vallot. The school follows a typical academic calendar and classes cover a range of performing arts.

The theater offers four mainstage productions a year: three geared toward adults and one children’s show. Throughout the year, they also host two showcases of lesser-known material, and themed Teddy Bear Tea parties.

Swamplight Theater always welcomes donors and support for scholarship students, so everyone can continue to find a home in the theater.

“The whole thing about this is being aware of your surroundings,” Chloe Vallot adds. “That is the biggest takeaway from theater, being aware and just looking, connecting with people.”

They stress that the theater is a place where everyone is welcome. Chloe says, “We have so many beautiful kids that come in and say, I don’t think I can do this. But we make it happen. I’ve had kids say, I’d rather be here than be at home. Because really, this is their place.”

In recent years, Swamplight Theater has presented classics like Hairspray and To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as lesser-known works such as Tracers, which deals with the aftereffects of going to war.

“We’re here to entertain,” Kendel Smith says, “and we’re here to have fun. But one of the most important things about theater is that it does make a difference in life. Even the simplest shows have social statements. This is the world we live in. We have to learn to accept it, or we have to change it for the better. It’s really important to wade into some subjects that people aren’t comfortable wading into.”

Those interested in teaching or participating with the theater in other ways can reach out to: KButlerPerformingArtsProject@gmail.com. “Just show up, come say hi,” Chloe Vallot says, noting that someone is nearly always in the building.

Finally, the four say the best way to participate is: Come see the shows! More information on Teddy Bear Teas, auditions and upcoming shows is at swamplight.org or KayButlerPerformingArtsProject.com, and on social media.

Downtown Hammond recognized as one of America’s best! 2022

very town and city in America has a Main Street. Even Disney has a Main Street.

Main Street in these downtowns were once the focal point for life in a community. The downtowns were vibrant with restaurants, shops, professional services, banks, transportation, and residences.

Over the past few decades, many downtowns have been revitalized and the buildings restored and put back into commerce. These downtowns have once again become an attraction for visitors as well as locals.

With the thousands of revitalized Downtowns in America, there are only one of a select few downtowns who can claim they are the best. Downtown Hammond, the winner of the prestigious 2022 Great American Main Street Award, can now make this claim as well.

“We are incredibly honored to have downtown Hammond named the winner of the Great American Main Street Award,” said Hammond Downtown Development Director Chelsea Tallo Little. “This award is the result of many people working together over the years to preserve and refurbish downtown Hammond.”

Each year, Main Street America recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial district revitalization with the Great American Main Street Award. Since the award’s inception in 1995, over 100 Main Street programs have been honored.

The Main Street movement is the leading voice for preservation-based economic development and community revitalization across the country.

The organization believes “everyone deserves access to a vibrant neighborhood – a place that has a thriving local economy, is rich in character, and features inviting public spaces that make residents and visitors feel that they belong.”

For many years, the leaders in the Hammond Downtown Development District have followed this path for the revitalization and growth of the downtown area.

“When you look back over the past couple of years, we have accomplished quite a bit,” said Tallo-Little. “Our Railroad Park is complete and being used constantly. Our Farmer’s Market has grown to be a staple in our community. Our downtown apartments are all occupied, and our businesses are thriving in downtown Hammond.”

Tallo-Little and a team from Hammond traveled to Richmond, Virginia in May to accept the award. Hurricane Ida almost destroyed this celebration.

“We started the application process in July 2021. The process is rather lengthy and detailed as you can imagine. We were moving on schedule and then Hurricane Ida hit and knocked out power and internet service.”

She said the deadline was in August, but Main Street America extended their deadline for one week. Tallo-Little and her team were waiting and once they found a place with power and internet service, they completed the application process in three days.

“We are incredibly honored to have downtown Hammond named the winner of the Great American Main Street Award.”
~ Downtown Development Director Chelsea Tallo Little

Tallo-Little is looking forward to the upcoming year with more improvements to downtown Hammond. She said they will continue to create public spaces for visitors and locals to enjoy the outdoors. She also said the Hammond DDD will continue to explore pedestrian areas and walkways for families to feel at home in the downtown area.

Hopefully, there is a misconception Tallo-Little feels the Great American Main Street Award may clear up. While many people know about Hot August Night, Starry November Night and events in the parks, there’s more to the Hammond DDD Office than this.

“We are more than party-planners. While we enjoy these events like everyone else, our job is to continually search for ways to preserve and revitalize our downtown area. This means we are constantly working with property owners and businesses to meet the ever-increasing demands of keeping the downtown area a vibrant and thriving neighborhood in the heart of Hammond.”

Endless Opportunities

When we were ready to expand, our first call was to Tangipahoa Parish Economic Development.

“Southland Steel has been family owned and operated since 1986 in St. Helena Parish. When we were ready to expand our company in Tangipahoa Parish by acquiring the Bradken Steel Mill in Amite to create Southland Coatings and Grid Structures, we saw endless opportunities for success.

We contacted Tangipahoa Parish Economic Development Director Ginger Cangelosi. She and her team got the ball rolling. Ginger put us in contact with Louisiana Economic Development for information on tax incentives specific for manufacturing businesses and other state programs. She also reached out to the Tangipahoa Workforce Development Group Geaux Jobs and the Northshore Technical Community College who helped us connect with folks interested in joining our company.

The results were outstanding. With our latest expansion project, we are already surpassing our projected sales targets.

With the Economic Development Team we have in Tangipahoa Parish, we realize that there are endless opportunities for Southland Steel.”

A VERY LARGE Small Town Law Firm

Just west of the Tangipahoa Parish line is the largest small town law firm in southeast Louisiana. It’s the Mack Law Firm and the attorneys in the law firm have been helping families and businesses navigate the complex legal systems for years.

Photos by Johnny Chauvin

“I always tell our new clients, don’t let our rural address fool you,” said Sherman Mack. “We have a team of attorneys and support staff that are dedicated to helping everyone with their case. Being in court is a stressful time, but our team tries to eliminate as much of that stress as possible.”

Mack established the Mack Law Firm in 2000, and since then, his law firm has become a premier firm for criminal defense, personal injury, successions, and business law.

The attorneys and staff at the Mack Law Firm offer legal assistance with a high degree of specialized knowledge. All of the attorneys and staff were born and raised right here in the same communities that they serve today. Their Southeast Louisiana roots and love for the people of this region are what sets the Mack Law Firm apart from the rest.

“The legal system is vast and can be exceptionally confusing,” said Glenn Westmoreland. “No one ever wants to deal with courts and lawyers, but our knowledgeable team is full of friendly faces to help you navigate through the murky waters of our legal system.”

While the attorneys at the firm work mostly in the 21st Judicial District which is comprised of Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. Helena Parishes, they have also tried cases in district court in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette

and just about every other judicial district in the state of Louisiana. The firm has also handled complex cases in the Eastern, Middle and Western Federal District Courts as well as the state and federal Court of Appeals, and the Louisiana State Supreme Court.

Mack said his firm’s years of experience and in-depth knowledge of the law drives tailor-made, targeted solutions. Each individual case is unique, and these attorneys know a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. The Mack Law Firm Team works hard to find the best possible legal solutions for their clients and their family.

When not in the office, Sherman Mack and his family can usually be found at the ballparks in Ponchatoula. His youngest son plays baseball in Ponchatoula just like his two older sons.

“My wife, Angie and I, are big baseball fans. We are out there encouraging all the players to do their best, and we have fun watching these players grow into fine young men.”

Sherman Mack has served as a Louisiana State Representative for the past eleven years. He will be term-limited after the next year’s final session in 2023.

“Many people have asked if I am running for State Senate, but as I have told them I believe it’s time to take a break from politics and spend some quality time with my wife and children.”

During the next couple of years, Mack will continue to grow his law firm to continue to help the families and businesses in Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. Helena Parishes.

“God Almighty has blessed me and my family. I will continue to extend these blessings to my colleagues and clients as we work to find lawful resolutions for the cases that we handle.”

Come See What’s Cookin’ at Le Saigon

How did a couple with academic backgrounds wind up owning what is arguably the best Vietnamese, Korean barbecue, and Asian fusion grill in Hammond? To answer that, trace the steps of owners Sang Lee and Yoosung Im back to their native South Korea.

Both began their post-secondary educations in their homeland. They married and immigrated to Florida where Yoosung studied Music and Voice for her Master’s degree while Sang completed his PhD at the University of Florida. Dr. Lee is quick to point out that Yoosung is a master musician turned restauranteur.

Throughout their relationship the couple endured separation to further their education.

Long before dreaming of owning her own restaurant, Yoosung spent three years apart from Sang while he began teaching at Southeastern Louisiana University and she received her doctorate in Minnesota. He is with the university as a Professor of Economics and served as the Department Head of Management and Business Administration.

When the family reunited with their daughters, Yoosung dove wholeheartedly into the role of mother and wife while also giving voice and music lessons to her young students. She also loved filling their home with friends and serving her tantalizingly delicious homemade sauces and Asian dishes.

Friends encouraged her to share her culinary gifts by expanding the Asian restaurant market here in Tangipahoa Parish. Yoosung had already accumulated seed money from a profitable venture opening a bakery in Independence, which served as a foundation for Le Saigon.

But the couple’s hearts’ desire went far beyond a donut stand. They sought a restaurant featuring authentic Asian cuisine on the Northshore to rival similar eateries in Metairie and New Orleans.

As a savvy Economics professor, Sang knew a lucrative, growth-oriented market when he saw one. Hammond ticked off all their boxes. Their first location was on Thomas Street across from the Columbia Theater. The location allowed the educators time to transition from lofty academia to roll-upyour-sleeves restaurant ownership.

Their grand opening was truly a trial by fire, held on Hot August Night in 2017. Sang’s goal was to “bring the outdoor barbecue experience inside.” But the initial downtown location lacked adequate parking and was too small to accommodate their burgeoning customer base. Reluctantly, they gave up their downtown spot and purchased the land where they built their sleek, modern restaurant at 1820 South Magnolia Street near Hammond Square.

Yoosung Im — A Master Musician

Turned Restauranteur.

Le Saigon is the only Northshore eatery with real Korean barbecue features like indoor grilling tables for customers to prepare their own fresh meats. Yoosung’s homemade broths, sauces, and marinades are all MSG-free.

All marinades are naturally sweetened by fruits and not sugar to assure they remain “healthy yet delicious.” And make no bones about it – the kitchen is Yoosung’s realm. Yoosung and Le Saigon’s hardworking staff collaborate together to make delicious meals for hungry customers Monday through Saturday.

Have You Tried Le Saigon Lately?

If you haven’t, we highly recommend that you do, and we hope to see you there soon!

HAVE YOU VISITED INDEPENDENCE LATELY?

Independence, Louisiana has always been a small but proud community. Despite some financial struggles in recent years, Mayor Jim Paine says things are turning around, and the township is moving from surviving to thriving.

“When I came into office, the town was in very bad financial shape,” Mayor Paine says. “We couldn’t afford to pay the bills or our workers. It was very bad. Thank God we’ve been able to get the revenues up. We’re able to pay our bills, we have a little money, and we’re financially stable now.”

“We had a lot of debt,” he continues. “We paid two big loans off, so now that is income we have coming in.”

But the changes haven’t just been around finances. Areas once afflicted with blight are transforming as well.

“The town is doing well, cleaning up a lot, you can see the difference when you come in,” Paine says with pride.

“Ninety percent of the property owners have stepped up and took care of the problem,” he says. “They’ve cleaned their building, repainted them. We have a couple left still to deal with. You gotta talk to them a bit. But they’ll do it.”

He is confident community members all want to see Independence become its best.

The town of Independence is growing. Recently, two new businesses have opened up.

“In July of 2020, Mr. Eddie Oliphant and his family immediately came in and rented The Depeaux. I think it took them about eight or nine months to get it open. They’re doing well. They've got a fantastic business, good food -- people come from everywhere to come there and eat.”

“We also have the meat market owned by Dean Lee and Devin Fitzmorris. It’s gonna be nice. They’re going to have a good business there as well.”

At the time of writing, Fitz-Lee Specialty Meats & Wildgame was preparing for their grand opening.

Mayor Paine is quick to mention the longstanding businesses contributing to the community’s strength and success as well.

“DoRan Seafood has been very, very good to the town. The new owner is Mark Abraham and some other fellas from New Orleans.Piggly Wiggly is very good to the town and we're glad to have them here and doing business. The Dollar Store also does fantastic work.”

Last but not least, “Bar-B-Que Station owned by Jimmy Gregory does well there, and he donates a lot. He is getting ready to open another location so he will have four. Oh, he is one of my Councilman,” he adds.

“Our town is changing,” Paine says. “A lot of properties have been bought; new homes are being built. Every home somebody lives in is a plus for us. We're a quiet little town, without much trouble. It’s nice.”

“These folks never say no,” he continues of the people of Independence, reflecting on the recent July 4th celebrations. “A lot of them chipped in to donate food and different things to make the festivities great. Everyone does what’s needed to take care of business.”

“In two years, we’ve done a lot,” Mayor Paine concludes. “We spent a ton of money getting this stuff back up to par and it’s still not quite finished. We’re a work in progress.”

YOUR VOICE IN THE STORM

We live in south Louisiana, and hurricane season is part of life. As we are still feeling a few recovery pains from Ida, and as we approach the peak of this year’s hurricane season, we want to remind Tangipahoa Parish that you have a broadcast media group that is dedicated to your parish. Not Orleans. Not Jefferson. Not St. Tammany, Livingston or Baton Rouge. We dedicate 4 of our 13 radio stations to Tangipahoa news. Kajun 107.1, Tangi 96.5, Boss 103.7 and 1400-AM WFPR all have generator power, and we stay on the air 24-hours during and after storm events. We provide vital information before, during, and especially in the wake of the storms.

Providing vital information before, during, and especially in the wake of the storms.

Our parish’s Emergency Operations Center is a top-notch facility, which does a great job managing preparation and recovery operations. Social media and government websites are also great, but you need internet access for those platforms. Inevitably, power, internet, and cell phone service will be interrupted in the crucial 24-72 hours after a major event. Home generator power is wonderful, but without internet and cell service, it's not possible to receive vital

information about the state of damage and recovery response. Therefore, in addition to your normal hurricane prep supplies, we recommend a battery-powered radio tuned in to any of your local stations.

Kajun 107.1, Tangi 96.5, Boss 103.7 and 1400-AM WFPR may not be everyone’s daily preference in music, however the local news, sports, weather and general community information that we provide everyday is relevant to our entire community. During local emergency events such as hurricanes, floods and ice storms, we simulcast these 4 stations and make our airwaves available to all local emergency responders, government officials, and utility providers so they can immediately dissiminate information and updates.

Our on-air personalities and production staff bed down in our studio offices and work in 24-hour shifts until the situation is such that around-the-clock coverage is not necessary.

For those who choose to evacuate during an emergency, we recommend that you download the Kajun107, Tangi965 and Boss1037 apps to your smart phones. These apps simulcast the same content as the over-the-air signal, and if you’re out of town with internet or cell access, you can receive updates on what’s happening back home. We pray we will not have to put our emergency plans in effect this year, but know that we are prepared and ready to serve our community with vital information updates should the need arise.

PARKER Layrisson's

(’99) and then was number one in his class at LSU Law School (’02). While in college he was able to spend a year in Washington DC working for Congressman Bob Livingston. After law school, Parker spent a year working as Special Counsel for the Louisiana Attorney General then a year clerking for a federal judge before opening his private practice in Ponchatoula in 2004, which he still operates today on 5th Street. In 2015, he also authored Accident Handbook, which is a guide to personal injury law. His wife of 12 years, Brandie, and sons Luke (6) and James (4) are his absolute favorite things, but here are the next 5…

tangi 5 FAVORITE THINGS

FOOD

Parker loves to eat. Texas BBQ, New York pizza, and California tacos are all amazing, but no food on earth can top a fresh Ponchatoula strawberry!

1

3

FRIENDS

Wil and Ben Richardson are Parker’s lifelong best friends.  He can always count on them. The highlights of his childhood were the annual Richardson and Layrisson family vacations in the mountains of North Carolina. A cherished event was returning to those mountains with their own young children.

FAITH

His family prays together every night. They also read the Bible daily. He cannot imagine life without his Christian faith because “we owe everything to Jesus.”

2

FUN

His family’s passion is travel. Parker’s wife Brandie discovered she was pregnant with their oldest son, Luke, while they were vacationing in Paris. Two years later, the same thing happened with their son James on a trip to San Francisco. Now, their favorite destination is Carmel, California.

4

FAMILY

Parker declares that any faults he has are 100% his own because his parents are the best in the world. As are his wife, kids, and brothers. He loves them all. Gatherings with the entire family are, no doubt, a favorite thing.
