It Must be

Trivia Night!

At the third annual Trivia Night in November, about 300 attendees strained their brains over minutiae in various categories like Wisconsin politicians, science, sports, music royalty and Christmas. But somehow it felt more like the game show Let’s Make a Deal than Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? as teams arrived in wacky costumes and set up their tables.

Cash prizes were awarded to the “smartest” tables and some people took home musical notes that had been decorated by students and put in a silent auction. The winning table and costume theme was a 1980s wedding, followed by Oktoberfest and a table filled with Lady Gagas!

Some other themes included detectives, pirates and “bad” holiday sweaters.

Strategic Direction and Facilities Improvements Mark a Busy Year Judd Schemmel, President

T

he past year has been a busy and important time in the 130-year history of Edgewood High School. During 2010 Edgewood pursued the elements of critical thinking that will guide our work over the next five years while addressing some of our pressing needs of today.

In both endeavors, the work of the EHS faculty, staff, Board of Trustees and Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa continue to pave the way to a bright future for EHS and the families we serve.

Spring 2010 marked a time when the Board of Trustees passed two very important planning documents. The first was the school’s new five-year strategic plan. The high school’s new strategic plan is based around four primary goals: 1. To educate, nurture and challenge our students in an inclusive school community rooted in Dominican values 2. To establish long-term fiscal security 3. To update EHS facilities with an emphasis on safety, increased accessibility and learning needs, and 4. To strengthen internal and external relationships through effective communication

The four overarching goals to the strategic plan are supported by identifiable methods to measure progress as well as specific initiatives that individually and collectively will continue to drive the high school forward.

The second major planning project completed in 2009-2010 was a full facilities master plan for the buildings and grounds that comprise the Edgewood High School campus. Through a variety of surveys and listening sessions with faculty, staff, students and parents, a special committee appointed by the high school identified the key priorities that must remain at the forefront as improvements to the EHS physical setting are considered.

Whether it’s ongoing improvements to our classrooms, upgrades in security and accessibility or improvements to our Commons, the EHS Facilities Master Plan will guide our near- and long-term efforts to offer a welcoming setting that is conducive to learning and growth.

The high school didn’t wait long to have the new Facilities Master Plan impact its deferred maintenance efforts. The very busy summer of 2010 brought a substantial facelift to the high

school’s Commons (cafeteria), improvements to five restrooms, and accessibility and safety enhancements at door points throughout the facility. It’s very gratifying to both the high school and to those who gave considerable time to create the Facilities Master Plan to see it having an immediate positive impact on life at EHS. Each day, those of us at Edgewood take great pride in joining with our current families, alumni and the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation in the important ministry of education. Efforts like strategic planning, facilities master planning and ongoing environmental improvements are a natural extension of this shared ministry and part of the commitment we make to serve our families and sponsors to the very best of our ability.

We thank you for your prayers and wonderful expressions of support for Edgewood High School.

THE MOMENTUM CONTINUES As Edgewood High School looks to summer 2011, ongoing improvements to the physical setting will again be front and center. The oldest part of the building (the 1927 wing) houses a total of 23 classrooms, seven offices, five bathrooms and the Sr. Kathleen O’Connell Auditorium. Past renovations have enhanced all but six classrooms, three bathrooms and one office. We’re very pleased that the requisite funding has been secured to undertake substantial improvements to all six of the remaining classrooms, two bathrooms and the one remaining office. The pending renovations will take place this coming summer, they will essentially complete the 1927 wing, and all are in line with our overarching Facilities Master Plan.

Special thanks go to those participating in this important, substantial capital improvement project.

Campus Notes ACT Results Keep Improving From 1997 to 2010, Edgewood’s average ACT scores have risen by 2.3 points to 25.4 with an average of 95% of EHS students taking the test over that period (98%-100% in recent years). During the same time period, state and national averages remained essentially unchanged.

5 National Merit Semifinalists The 16,000 Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, were announced in the fall. EHS seniors Rebecca Cray, Catherine DeGuire, Claire McLauglin, Bayley Waters and Eric Wendorf have been selected as Semifinalists. They will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for the Finalist stage at which 6,500 scholarships are awarded.

Students Organize Fresh Food Effort with Farmers’ Market Last summer, Sarah Healy, Marie Luebke and Rebecca Cray organized the Field to Family food drive project to provide fresh, local, nutritious foods for struggling families in Madison. Every Saturday in August at the Dane County Farmers' Market, they asked shoppers to buy food and then drop off donations at collection stations on the Capitol Square. The project was supported

by Friends of the Dane County Farmers' Market, Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin and the Dane County Food Pantry Network.

30 Students Earn AP Awards Results of the 2009-2010 Advanced Placement tests were announced in September. At Edgewood, 139 students (more than half the seniors and a third of juniors) took 246 tests, up 25% in the last five years. Just over 75% of these students scored a 3 or above, making them eligible for possible college credit. This figure is up 48% in the last five years and is much higher than national and state averages.

Of the nearly 1.8 million students who took AP Exams worldwide last year, only 18% performed at a sufficiently high level to earn them special recognition. At Edgewood, Katherine Bush ’10, Cosette DeChant ’10, Frances Shepherd ’10 and Steven Underwood ’10 qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average of at least a 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and 3 or higher on five of these exams. Another 26 students earned other levels of AP Scholar recognition.

Far-Reaching Service Edgewood’s commitment to service once again was on display to the community in the school’s most public volunteer event, Edgewood in the Community. Now incorporated as a celebrated part of Homecoming festivities, Edgewood in the Community annually brings together students, faculty, staff, parents and even some alumni to serve at organizations, schools, churches, nursing homes, food pantries, parks and agencies that serve the public. Participants travelled to 51 sites in the Madison area, providing more than 3,000 hours of community service. In the ten years that the event has been hosted, Edgewood has provided about 45,000 hours of assistance (as many total hours as there are in five years!)

Crusader Clips SPRING 2010 These results weren’t yet in when Crusader Connection was published in June…

• Boys’ Track: The team finished 3rd at State due to Matt McKenna finishing 1st in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. He also placed 2nd in the 800 meter run at the State level.

• Girls’ Soccer: The team ended with a conference record of 5-1-0, tied with Milton for 1st Place in the Badger South Conference.

The team had one of the toughest schedules in the state, playing many of the top Division 1 teams, preparing them for another trip to State where they fell 4-1 to Grafton in the Semifinal.

• Baseball: The team finished 2nd place in Conference and were Regional and Sectional Champs, advancing to State where they lost to University School of Milwaukee, 8-7 in a heart-breaking last-minute play in the Semifinals.

• Boys’ Golf: The team had another sensational year, taking 1st Place in the Badger Conference for the 5th straight year and placing 1st at the WIAA State Meet for the 2nd year in a row!

• Boys’ Tennis: The team finished 1st in the Badger Conference for the 3rd straight year and qualified for Team-State for the 7th straight year by winning the WIAA Sectional Tournament where the boys lost to eventual state champions University School.

FALL 2010 • Boys’ Cross Country: Joe McKenna ’11 was named Conference Individual Champion.

• Girls’ Cross Country: For the first time in school history, the team finished 1st in

Conference and qualified for the State Tournament! Kelli McKenna ’12 was named the Conference Individual Champion.

• Dance: After earning 1st Place in their division for the open routine and short program at Badgerette Dance Camp during the summer, the team was invited to the Badgerette Midwest Dance Championships where the girls earned 1st Place overall in their division.

• Football: The team finished the year with a record of 5-5, taking 5th place in conference.

Successful EAA Raffle!

• Girls’ Golf: The team made its 10th straight appearance at State, finishing 2nd and ending a nine-year championship streak. The team dominated Conference by winning all matches for the 10th year in a row. They were also ranked #1 in the State in both divisions.

• Boys’ Soccer: The team finished the season with an overall record of 9-9-4 and a conference record of 2-1-3 giving them 3rd Place in the Badger South Conference.

• Girls’ Swim/Dive: Sheridan Hearn ’12 earned top ten finishes in all invites this season. She won Sectionals with a personal best score and took 3rd Place in the 1-meter dive at State.

This year’s EAA Raffle event, held during Alumni & Friends Reunion Weekend in August, was a huge success. Ticket sales from the raffle generated over $60,000 for the Athletic Department!

Thanks go to everyone who purchased a ticket and a special thank you goes to the Edgewood Athletic Association members for all of their hard work to make this event a special one.

NFL Craze goes online

• Girls’ Tennis: The team finished 1st in the Badger South Conference and 1st at the Conference Championships. The girls set a Sectional record by winning 6 out of 7 championships. At Team State they bowed to three-time champion Green Bay Notre Dame in a tightly played final.

• Volleyball: The team went 12-0 in Conference taking 1st Place for the 8th straight year and then earned “Regional Champ” for the 10th year in a row! At State (for the first time since 2003) the team finished 2nd behind topranked Waukesha Catholic Memorial.

Next season, anyone can enter the NFL Craze! EHS will be making entries available online, so no matter which team you cheer for or where you’re located, you can join the fun. Weekly prizes are based on combinations of winning and losing scores and other stats and no two entries are the same. Check the school’s website at www.edgewoodhs.org later this spring and summer to sign up for your entry form.

In the Swing of Things with the Northwoods Golf Getaway The Red Crown Resort in Minocqua was again the site for three days of golfing, making new friends and fundraising to help raise general funds for Edgewood. Maroon & Gold Parties: Anyone Can Host One and Help!

What is a Maroon & Gold Party? It’s a Spring Auction fundraising/attendance-building event that can be hosted by anyone interested in supporting EHS…the date, location, activities/theme and menu are up to you! Parties can be casual or formal, in your home or out on the town. Maybe you want your party to have a theme, like cooking or sports. Try asking all of your guests to wear their favorite teams’ colors to the party and watch a game together.

How does a Maroon & Gold Party help Edgewood? Party guests may be asked to make a financial contribution to the EHS Spring Auction in order to attend the party. These funds are then used to procure items of high value for the EHS Spring Auction, like trips, jewelry, electronics, tickets to sporting events or concerts, etc. Or, if you are in the Madison area, party guests may be asked to bring items to be donated to the auction.

If you choose a theme for your party, like “A Night at the Oscars,” you might ask guests to bring DVDs, posters, movie tickets and other movie-themed items to create baskets for the auction.

Have a “housewarming” party and ask your guests to bring kitchen or home décor items. Or how about a “regifting” party for unused (but nice!) presents like that second or third shiny appliance that was under the tree this Christmas, or the extra cocktail set you received as a wedding present? We want all sorts of high-quality items, unique experiences or fine dining gift cards that will appeal to our attendees.

The money or items donated at the parties help us generate more income at the EHS Spring Auction, which is the largest fundraiser of the year. In turn, funds raised at the Auction help support the financial aid program at EHS, which provides assistance to more than 43% of EHS students.

Remember someone special or create a legacy for yourself — set up an EHS Endowment named fund that will benefit students or programs Sr. Kathleen O’Connell, former Edgewood High School principal, established the school’s endowment at a time when few Catholic high schools even considered the need for one. Due to her vision, the Sr. Kathleen O’Connell fund within the EHS Endowment now provides unrestricted assistance to the school annually. In addition, the Endowment, which is now valued at approximately $5.3 million, includes other donor-named funds that are dedicated to giving tuition assistance in perpetuity. While disbursements vary depending upon the amount of interest earned in any year, most funds have been able to provide financial assistance ranging from 5% to 10% of the principal annually. Stations of the Cross Restored In 1956 a set of the Stations of the Cross was installed and blessed in the EHS chapel. During a renovation of the chapel in the early 1980s, the plaques of the Stations were removed from the individual crosses on which they had been mounted and were all mounted on a single board. This, in effect, removed them from being true Stations of the Cross, which must each have an individual location.

When the chapel was being renovated in the early 2000s, the board with the Station plaques was removed and stored away. However, the chapel is now once again graced with the Stations after a restoration by two alumni.

Bob Arthur ’65, a professional carpenter and cabinet-maker, and Dennis McKinley Bob Arthur ’65 and Dennis McKinley ’63 took on the restoration ’63 took on the project in memory of their mothers in memory of their mothers, who had been Edgewood classmates. who had been EHS classmates. Irma Conrad Arthur and Agnes Kleinheinz McKinley graduated from Edgewood with the class of 1930—the first class to have boys with it for all four years. Bob and Dennis played percussion together first at St. James Grade School and then with the EHS band. They have worked jointly on several projects, so this latest endeavor came quite naturally. The plaques from the original Stations were removed from the single board and cleaned. Fourteen individual oak crosses were hand-crafted and the plaques mounted on them. The restored Stations of the Cross now hang in the EHS chapel, seven on each end wall.

Renovations and Upgrades Summer 2010 was a busy one as the hallways, bathrooms, Commons, Wilke Gym and Team Room were filled with the sounds of machinery and workmen, signs redirected people along alternate routes through the building and the air was filled with plaster dust and the smell of fresh paint.

Two anonymous families provided financial support to supplement the deferred maintenance funds necessary to undertake a refurbishing of the Commons, site of student lunches and study halls as well as numerous gatherings and special fundraising events. EHS maintenance staff and contractors worked to remove wallpaper and repaint the room, replace ceiling tiles and lights and put up new signage and a new back for the trophy cases. In addition new inner and outer doors were installed, and the bathrooms at the back of the Commons were completely remodeled. A number of the tables and chairs were also replaced as necessary because of age or damage.

The Crusader Team Room also underwent renovation, through gifts provided by Mike ’69 & Cynthia McKenna and Mark & Sue Landgraf. All the lockers were reconditioned and repainted, the walls received a fresh coat of paint that included maroon and gold stenciling, new lighting was installed and plumbing and bathroom improvements were made.

The Wilke Gym floor was stripped and sanded to the original wood and a new logo design and color scheme were applied, all made possible through a gift from Doug ’72 and Joan (Daniels ’72) Raftery.

EHS deferred maintenance funds allocated for annual facility upgrades were used to carry out a number of other projects during the summer, too.

The faculty/staff women’s restroom on the first floor was remodeled and made ADA compliant and improvements were made to the boys’ restroom on the second floor near the back of the building. Perhaps most noticeable to regular visitors was the complete replastering and repainting of the stairwell near the library and the replastering and painting of the main hallway outside of the EHS chapel. In addition, new doors equipped with an automatic door opening system were installed near the auditorium and security card readers were added at several building entrances.

Recognizing Distinguished Contributions of All Kinds

Living theMission For the first time, Edgewood High School combined its recognition for donors and awardees into a single event hosted on campus, giving an opportunity for attendees to appreciate all the different ways in which people connected to the Edgewood community contribute toward “Living the Mission.” In addition to presenting mementos to those in the higher Crusader Court donor levels, the following awards were presented. ALUMNI APPRECIATION AWARD

MARY ANNE RIPPLE Mary Anne’s primary Catholic cause for 50 years has been freedom of educational choice.

She began working for Fr. Virgil Blum’s Center for Educational Freedom at Marquette University in1963, then served: as lobbyist for the Fair Education Committee (one of the first two registered woman lobbyists in Wisconsin) and for Citizens for Educational Freedom (CEF), working for educational choice without tax penalty; as executive director of Wisconsin Catholic School Parents; and on the Wisconsin Catholic Conference board. Her work also includes lobbyist to the State Legislature, founder and co-chair of Dane County Citizens Organization, and executive director of Madison Area Governmental Education Committee (MAGEC) of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Anne was instrumental in the introduction and passage of a bill — now known as Ripple’s Law — expanding health treatment services for students in non-public schools and worked tirelessly for text books, bus service and tax credits for Catholic school children.

She joined the EHS advisory board in the early 1970s, when the school was in desperate financial straits, and organized financial support among parents; she 8 CRUSADER CONNECTION, WINTER 2011

First “Servant Heart Award” Presented A new award, its recipient chosen by members of the Board of Trustees, has been instituted. The Servant Heart Award will be presented annually to a person who may be, but is not necessarily, connected to the Edgewood High School community. The recipient is to be a person who exemplifies in his or her life the values and mission of Edgewood through selfless service to others and to causes that promote truth, justice, compassion, community and partnership. The inaugural recipient is Joe Tisserand ’57.

JOSEPH W. TISSERAND ’57 Joe Tisserand has been involved in the Catholic community at many levels during the last 45 years, and his altruism speaks volumes toward his nomination and selection.

Joe’s family has been involved with Edgewood in an ongoing tradition since his father attended in the 1930s, followed by Joe and his sisters, and subsequently, his daughters.

After serving on the Madison police force for a number of years, Joe took a position at American Family Insurance, where he remained from 1968 through the rest of his business career. During his time at American Family, he received many awards in the fields of sales, service and leadership.

Previous recognition includes the Edgewood Dominican Award for Service to Humanity in 1983, as well as many awards from the Yahara Lakes Association, Blackhawk Country Club, Catholic Charities of Madison and others.

At the Living the Mission dinner and awards ceremony, donors were recognized and some were presented with pairs of commemorative champagne flutes matched to the color of the Crusader Court level they had achieved. At right are Bob and Nancy Faith, representing The Swiss Colony, accepting their gift from president Judd Schemmel. The new event allows more accurate acknowledgement of gifts based on the fiscal year and also gives donors and representatives of those who have benefited from their generosity the opportunity to meet.

The list of Joe’s volunteer accomplishments is long and varied, but always related to service. While he was in college and as a Madison police officer, Joe helped the sports teams at St. Patrick Grade School.

He stayed involved with St. Patrick’s, eventually serving on the Parish Council and as a Church Trustee. He was twice a member of the EHS Board of Trustees, and also served as co-chair of Edgefest. Catholic Charities of Madison has benefited from Joe’s volunteer expertise, and he has served on its Board as president and chairperson twice. The Bishop of Madison has appointed Joe to each of the following: the Diocese of Madison Sexual Abuse Review Board, the Diocese of Madison Pastoral Council and the Diocese of Madison Implementation Commission.

In addition, he is on the All Saints Retirement Center Board and the St. Vincent DePaul Fund-Drive Committee for the new Food Bank Building.

Mary Anne is the mother of seven graduates. Nine of her 21 grandchildren are EHS alumni, current students or will soon attend. Two of her daughters married EHS alums and two of her sons-in-law are former staff/faculty and coaches.

DOMINICAN AWARD FOR SERVICE TO HUMANITY

THOMAS J. O’NEILL ’65 Tom has been a leader in the Down Syndrome movement for the past 30 years.

Ever since his first son, Joshua, was born in 1978, Tom and his wife, Rita, have worked for the benefit of children who face the challenges of living with Down Syndrome. He has volunteered with a number of organizations, beginning with the National Down Syndrome Congress as a board member and chair from 1980 to 1989. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Tom was a founding member and board chair for the Learning and Development Center, served on the Southwest Allen County School Corporation, and has been a member of the boards of numerous organizations. He was instrumental in the founding of the Down Syndrome Association of Northeast Indiana (DSANI), and served on its board of directors and as a senior advisor. Nationally, Tom has volunteered as a board member and chair for both the National Down Syndrome Society and its Honorary Board of Governors.

He has received numerous awards, including those from the Learning and Development Center, Time Corners Little League, DSANI, the National Down Syndrome Society and the Indianapolis Colts. He also received an Exceptional Meritorious Service Award from the National Down Syndrome Congress, was a nominee for the U.S. President’s Service Award, and received the Southwest Allen County School Citizenship Award and the Star Award from the Indiana Down Syndrome Foundation. In 2009 the DSANI Exceptional Meritorious Service Award was renamed in honor of Tom and Rita.

NORA FERM ’56 Nora Ferm has had a long and successful career both teaching in the classroom and as an enthusiastic supporter of the academic pursuits and the extracurricular activities of her admiring students.

She taught English and history at St. John Cathedral High School in Milwaukee for 16 years, until it closed in 1976. Nora then taught at St. Joseph High School in Kenosha for an additional 27 years. Nora also volunteered as a coach for Mock Trial, an advisor and coach for the Geography Bowl, the Model OAS and Model UN, and was on the planning committee for the English Festival. She received the Archbishop’s Vatican II Award for Distinguished Service to Youth from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 1998.

In retirement, Nora has continued her volunteer work with the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Queen of Apostles parish, as a fundraiser with the Friends of Pewaukee Library and as a tutor.

ANN NELSON Ann has taught music since she graduated from the UW-Madison in 1965. In 1982, she arrived at Edgewood where she has taught handbells and piano, was the choir director and worked with students to bring musical productions to fruition. Ann was instrumental in building the successful class piano program, teaching students of all levels from absolute beginners to those with advanced skills. Her work with the handbell program has led to an increased number of student participants, and the ensemble’s reputation in the greater Madison area is unprecedented. RODNEY UPHOFF ’68 Rodney Uphoff excelled at basketball and tennis at EHS and his athletic experiences also included the football and track teams and joining the original “E Club.” He lettered in singles tennis all four years, but basketball earned him true recognition. An All-Prep player, he held the one-season scoring mark of 612 points, and in three seasons boasted a total of 1,183 points (a record that still stands today). Rod also won the Thomas Hoffman award for excellence as a student and basketball player before going on to play for UW-Madison.

Rod earned his BA in political science with honors and was the commencement speaker in 1972. He continued his education with an MS at the London School of Economics where he was an International Rotary Fellow.

He returned to UW Law School to earn a JD and then began work with a firm in Madison. His career evolved to focus on teaching law, and he is now the Elwood Thomas Missouri Endowed Professor of Law

at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Rod has received a number of awards and recognition, and has served on many boards and committees. He is the author of more than 20 articles in a variety of publications.

He has spoken at national and international conferences and institutes, and served on the defense team that represented Terry Nichols in the Oklahoma City bombing trial. He was appointed last summer to the NCAA Infractions Committee.

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

COLLEEN SWEENEY HATHAWAY ’89 Colleen earned a total of 11 letters in basketball, cross country, softball, track and golf, all of this while maintaining an excellent academic record. She was named to four AllCity teams, twice in basketball, once in golf and once in cross country. Colleen was also selected for the WBCA Southern Wisconsin All-Star Basketball Team, a tournament featuring the top senior basketball players in the state. In her only

year of track, Colleen placed 6th at State in the 100-yard dash and set school records in that event and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams.

Colleen went on to play basketball while at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis.

In her three years as a starting point guard, the team went 75-10 and captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in 1991. They also won three conference championships, and she was a part of the 40game winning streak that is still a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record. Named to All-Conference, Academic All-Conference and tournament teams, Colleen established records for three-pointers made and attempted that still stand today.

Colleen continued her education at the Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota where she earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic degree in 1997, and was selected to give the commencement address.

Since graduating, Colleen has owned and operated her own chiropractic clinics, first in Minneapolis and now in Madison. In 2000 Colleen travelled to Brazil on a mission trip that provided free chiropractic services to residents.

Thanks to Mary JoTierney, wife of Tom Tierney ’68, Edgewood received an article written by Donna Kelley ’50 that appeared in the Sauk City Eagle (Wisconsin) in which she wrote about her class’ 60-year reunion in her “And Another Thing?” column. Here are some excerpts: “As I watched my classmates gather to celebrate, a couple things struck me. One is that several of the men in particular are hard of hearing. My husband believes this is caused by marriage. Interestingly enough, those same men hear almost everyone better than their wives.

We may have a research project here, folks…

“Of the original 133 in our graduating class, only 25 were present. Counting spouses we were 38. Several sent word explaining why they couldn’t make it and, of course, some have passed away. All were missed and remembered.

“One classmate, Luetta, gave each of us a handmade tissue holder in a Bucky Badger motif. And another, Margie, put champagne glasses of M&Ms in Maroon and Gold on the banquet table. (Note to classmates: shame on you guys who picked out the gold ones emblazoned with the name ‘Edgewood.’…

“Frank Gifford, spouse of classmate Audrey, lined us up for pictures. He said, ‘Tall ones in the back, short

ones in the front and everyone maintain silence or you can stay after and pound erasers.’ Frank did a fine job, but I would look much better if the short girl in front of me had stood still and covered my double chin.

“There were two or three in the class who looked exactly as they looked in high school. There is something unnatural about that. However, I am proud to say that I, personally, still fit into the same earrings I wore in high school.…

“Life is change … We are wrinkled, adorned with glasses and hearing aids, gray-haired, bald, lumpy, limpy and slightly shorter. But, we are also hopeful and much, much wiser. Life has said to each of us, ‘Listen up, you birds, this is not going to be easy. Your kids won’t be perfect; your marriages won’t be perfect. You will experience success and failure, lose loved ones, jobs, your health, beauty and virility.’

“But we are here, and for a couple of hours we were kids again, linked through our memories, experiences and values. To which I say, ‘Hallelujah and thank you, Lord!’ We are a bunch of old fogies who got dressed up and raised a glass to our alma mater, … And, God willing, we will do it again in five years.”

“We continue to be a very close class and a lot of the success of our reunion was due to the fact that we broke up the tasks and jobs: someone found the location, someone did the menu, someone did the invites, etc. We started planning the event and setting the date in March, but in retrospect, we should have had a firm date earlier as people had already made summer plans by April and some whom we had difficulty locating did not find out about the event until after it occurred. From a class of just over 90 people, 27 classmates attended and most brought a significant other. Everyone who left our reunion at the end of the night or emailed later

commented on how much fun they had and some suggested we do this every year. It was a relaxed environment and people had enough time to catch up with whomever they wanted.

There were several funny moments, but one that comes to mind is when people started trying on the EHS memorabilia, incuding an old letter-winner’s jacket and hockey jersey. For some folks there was intense peer pressure to see if they could still squeeze into the clothing their “post-high school figures.”

The reunion at the Club Tavern was a blast, but I think we would have had fun no matter where we were. About 30 people plus spouses attended. Steve Mize came in from San Francisco and Ed Herro came from New York. I have no idea who changed the most or least, but I think a lot of us were struck by how much Ty Shea was unchanged. That’s not completely fair, since he now has a wife and two kids, but just seeing him laughing and acting like always was a reminder of previous times. Since we had heard that Matt Grinvalsky, who didn’t attend, owned the Oakcrest Tavern, a group of a couple dozen thought it would be fun to take the party to Matt at his bar. But when they didn’t find him there, either, that didn’t stop the group from finishing the party on their own in style.

Make a Connection, Click a Link Joe Kemnitz ‘65, EHS Alumni Association Council President

C

onnect to Edgewood! That is the theme of my letter this issue, and one I consider so important and beneficial to all EHS graduates! There are many ways to either connect or reconnect to this special institution, and I urge each of you to find the way that best fits your lifestyle. Whether you join the EHS Alumni Association (EHSAA), look us up on the web or find us on Facebook, a connection to Edgewood is special to all graduates.

Members of the EHSAA may have noticed they did not receive their EHS Alumni Association renewal information last month, and I want to reassure you that this was done by design, not by oversight!

The EHSAA is changing its membership year to run from July 1 to June 30 in keeping with the fiscal calendar used by Edgewood. This makes it easier for us to plan for the coming year and allows us to reflect membership in the Annual Report more accurately.

Anyone who joined the association in 2010 will be able to use his or her benefits until the end of the fiscal year in June 2011, and renewal information will be sent at that time. We encourage you to continue your membership when you receive your renewal notice, and hope you are enjoying belonging to this worthwhile and beneficial group that is a source of support for the school. If not already a member, consider joining for the first time. The

membership form and payment options are both available online, so it is easy and painless to join.

The Alumni Association Council continues to work toward its goal of connecting alumni to Edgewood, and has been busy creating a Strategic Plan to help guide us for the next five years. The planning process involves many hours of work on the part of the AAC and is important as we build on our past successes and continue to improve and grow in the future.

We welcome any graduate of Edgewood to join us in our endeavors—there is always an open seat at the monthly AAC meetings and positions to be filled within the group. Little Librarian, Big Success

This Milkman Still Delivers

Amanda Miller ’10 took the EHS Starting Your Own Business class and developed a plan for Little Librarian, a toy kit which was named one of 30 finalists out of 500 entrants in the Disney’s FamilyFun contest. It wasn’t among the 10 winners of the Family Fun Toy of the Year Awards, but Little Librarian did receive national attention when in it was featured in the November Disney Family Fun Magazine and on the Disney Family Fun Toy Hopper app for smart phones.

Amanda, who currently attends St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, emailed her former teacher, Kym Husom, to say, “None of this would have happened if it weren't for your Small Business Class! All the hard work really paid off in the end!”

Little Librarian was developed by Amanda and her mother, Kristine (who is married to Don Miller ’82), over a number of years.

The kits include library cards, book cards, pockets that go inside the books like in pre-computer days, a reading journal, bookmarks and even overdue slips. “The librarian at my daughter’s grade school shared some supplies, and I made it into a Christmas gift because she played librarian at home all the time,” Kristine Miller said. When Amanda was a senior, she wrote a business plan for the Little Librarian kit as her course project and won Best Business Plan in the competition sponsored annually by Madison’s Business and Education Partnership.

Little Librarian encourages reading and provides book lovers with everything they need to transform their book collection into a library with materials just like the ones from the real library. Little Librarian kits hit the market in January, available on Amazon.com and at several Madison area retailers.

Home-delivery milkmen are a thing of the past—almost.

Madison still has John Martinelli ’62, who was interviewed for the Wisconsin State Journal’s “What I Do” feature by Jill Carlson. John has been a milkman for 47 years, first at Bowman Dairy and then as an independent delivery person when he bought the route from Golden Guernsey Dairy. His route includes homes, businesses, schools and daycare locations across the city. John delivers Photo by Kris Ugarriza milk, sour cream, eggs, orange juice, ice cream and other dairy products.

The work is physically demanding but John has never missed a day of work. When he first started delivering in the 1960s, he had about 200 customers, but over the years that number has dwindled to about 60. Fewer people are at home in the morning to collect their deliveries and the prevalence of convenience stores and supermarkets has made it possible for many people to pick up items at the last minute rather than planning for delivery.

John says, “I have had mentors in the many other drivers who were on routes when I first started. I worked with them and learned how to offer the best customer service.” It seems to have paid off, as he notes, “I’ve been on the job for so many years that now I deliver to the children and grandchildren of some of my first customers.”

Some of the families even trust him so much that he has keys to their homes and can place the products directly in their refrigerators!

They’re Cooking!

Normally, Edgewood doesn’t include news about former students who transferred before graduation, but these two morsels were just too good to pass up: • Russ Kook ((late ’90s, and yes, it’s prounounced “cook”) was a finalist on Hell’s Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey on the Food Network. He is a sous chef at the Florentine in Chicago.

• Marcus Candinas (mid-’80s) received high recognition for his company, Candinas Chocolatier, from Consumer Reports: “Candinas is a CR Best Buy…Exceptional hazelnut, caramel, liqueur-flavored centers; hints of fresh cream and butter.”

Insights on Insects Phil Pellitteri ’70 worked in his family’s Madison-area trash removal business while he was attending Edgewood and his father wanted him to take over the business.

But instead, Phil went on to major in biochemistry and pre-med at UW-Madison where he stumbled onto something that interested Photo by Jill Carlson him far more: bugs. As Karen Rivedal wrote in a Wisconsin State Journal “Know Your Madisonian” column, he is now the area’s “bug expert” who has worked for 32 years as director of UW-Madison’s Insect Diagnostic Lab. “Insects are just amazing creatures. Every year I see a handful of things I’ve never seen before, some insect new to the area or state.

It’s never boring. I deal with stuff indoors and outdoors. I even get to play CSI sometimes [having worked on] forensic cases.”

Phil notes, “It’s interesting to see people’s perspective on things.

Whenever somebody brings me a caterpillar, if I say it’s going to mature into a butterfly, they say that’s beautiful. But if I say it’s going to be a moth, they want to kill it.” And what of the Wisconsin state bird? “A mosquito you really do have a hard time saying anything nice about. Some people say they provide food for birds, but there are plenty of other insects, like gnats, that will keep birds happy.”

From Raindrop to Pool to Ocean Tammy Ehrmann, Director of Alumni Relations

The Class of 1960 celebrated its 50th Anniversary Reunion by using an available matching grant to raise a substantial amount that, when combined with funds raised by the Class of 1959 in honor of its 50th, will allow Edgewood to renovate a classroom next summer. Combining these smaller gifts produces larger benefits to Edgewood, demonstrating that all gifts, of all sizes, add up to make a difference.

There is an alumna who has come up with a painless and simple way to save for a gift to EHS: she is saving quarters from the year of her graduation and plans to donate them to the school in honor of her class’ 50Year Reunion. Although 25 cents seems small, when all those

all and winter are busy in the Alumni Relations office with reunions, back-to-school events, receptions, team sports and all of the hustle and bustle that is Edgewood High School. During this hectic time, I love the chances I get as Director of Alumni Relations to meet alumni of the school, and cherish those moments when I can connect with this diverse and amazing group of people on a more individual basis.

I continue to be reminded of why this is such a special place, one that prepares its graduates to be strong, caring, giving and intelligent members of society. I am happy my own daughters will get the opportunity to be a part of this group, and hope their Edgewood education will guide them on their journeys.

One of the areas with which I continue to be impressed is the generosity of the Edgewood Community and its willingness to support the school in so many ways. I work with a dedicated group of alumni on the EHS Alumni Association Council, and the time and energy they give by serving on the Council is wonderful to see. I also see the strong sense of volunteerism that is instilled by Edgewood when alums come back to participate in activities like Edgewood in the Community and the Spring Auction and Social.

Many alumni choose to support the school through monetary gifts, often as they celebrate a milestone anniversary of their graduation. During this past reunion season we received class

quarters are totalled up throughout the years they will become a substantial gift. And just like the previous reunion classes, her gift will be combined with her classmates’ gifts to provide a substantial amount for Edgewood.

You will often hear us say that any gift, no matter what the size, is important and appreciated, and that is certainly evident in the above instance.

Investing in the Three Ts Reaps the Fourth: Thanks Mary Link, Director of Institutional Advancement

T

ime, talent, treasure… we hear these three words often, and usually together, especially when referring to making a donation.

This past season, you probably gave all three of these gifts in a variety of ways to a number of different recipients. It may have been an afternoon spent at your local grocery store ringing the bell for the Salvation Army as the snow fell around you.

Maybe you delivered a plate or tin of your special homemade cookies to a neighbor or sang with a church group that went caroling at nursing homes. Or perhaps you bought an extra toy or a bag of grocery items and contributed them to a “giving tree” program or food bank. Or instead of spending quite so much on those who already have much, you made an online donation to a cause for others you will never meet.

In whatever way you chose to express your generosity, I’m sure that when you gave one or more of the “three Ts” you found you also received something in

return. A friendly greeting, a surprised smile, a tearful hug, an appreciative thank you card. You benefited from a new or renewed sense of closeness to others, whether anonymous or important in your daily life.

You enjoyed the camaraderie of a shared endeavor. You gained a quiet pride from having made a difference.

Over the past 130 years, Edgewood High School has been the grateful recipient of many gifts of time, talent and treasure. Current parents, parents of alumni, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and students have all chosen to share their resources. Because of their generosity, Edgewood has been able to continue providing opportunities for young people to reach their fullest individual potential and, in the Dominican tradition, contribute their own service, skills and funds generously.

This issue of Crusader Connection is full of examples of people who give freely of the three Ts: alumni commemorating an anniversary with a class gift; alumni and students receiving recognition for their contributions to school and community; members of the entire EHS family donating their time for a day of service; volunteers and attendees at fundraising events; donors whose gifts keep daily operation of the school possible or fund special projects and improvements; and the list goes on. This edition is no exception. Every issue of Crusader Connection is full of the gifts that you share with Edgewood. We celebrate this willingness to give—in any way and in any amount—and thank you for the many ways in which you help make the difference for Edgewood.

Did you know?

Texas Mary Ann Lucy, OP, lives the mission in Brownsville by serving as an advocate for and counselor to the youngest victims—sexually abused children. A licensed therapist, fluent in Spanish because of her missionary experience in Bolivia, Sister Mary Ann works with the Cameron County Child Advocacy Center. She also assists both the police and district attorney’s office when called upon.

Illinois Jean Matijosaitis, OP, lives the mission on the south side of Chicago as principal of Visitation Elementary School, serving African-American children in grades 1-8. Her ministry extends beyond the school, however, to assisting parents with basic needs, raising money for scholarships so students can attend a Catholic school, finding ways of extending the school day with a variety of activities that help keep her students safe and engaged in learning on all levels.

Washington Sheila Fitzgerald, OP, lives out the mission in Spokane as coordinator of projects for Transitions, Inc., an organization established by several congregations of women religious, including the Sinsinawa Dominicans, to assist homeless women and others in difficult circumstances to find ways of starting anew. One of Sister Sheila’s projects has been the New Leaf Café where women from the drop-in center learn baking skills (and all other kinds) from a professional chef and, through Catholic Charities, sell their output to the downtown Spokane community.

Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa Living the Mission in…

Diane Faust, OP, lives the mission in Oshkosh as pastoral minister to the elderly of several parishes in the city. She has outreach programs, organizes other volunteers, provides information and matches needs with various providers, but especially she offers the spiritual comfort, care and attention the elderly need the most.

Though most of the Sinsinawa Dominican sisters who once taught at Edgewood have retired, many remain active in a wide range of other ministries. This column, provided by the sisters, offers examples of other ways that members of our sponsoring congregation live out their mission of preaching and teaching.

by Kate Ripple ’80 When I called, Katie asked one favor: “Please promise me this article will be short?” Of course, I promised. It would just be a quick profile of a young alumna who’s already chosen to give back to Edgewood in a big way.

Rist is one of the newest members of the Edgewood High School Board of Trustees. Currently an associate attorney with Foley & Lardner in Madison, she says the impetus to join the Board this fall was her own.

“I wanted to get involved in the community.

There are plenty of terrific organizations doing great work in the area, so I thought long and hard about which one I wanted to be part of. Because of my personal connection and interest, I thought a lot about Edgewood. I knew that Foley & Lardner had had several representatives on the EHS board in the past, and Hank Gempeler ’62 was one of them. He encouraged me to go ahead.

I talked to Judd [Schemmel, EHS president] and he welcomed it.”

“Since joining the board in September I’ve been impressed with the organization. I see things we never saw and never knew about as students.

I’m specifically impressed by the thought and care that goes into every single decision with respect to the school, whether in the area of admissions, athletics, diversity—every single issue.”

Rist fondly remembers her time at EHS, when she was a top student and was named to All City teams in both volleyball and basketball. “And now I play on a city league team with Coach Stav!”

“Academically, I specifically remember Señora Houlihan. She was the reason I studied abroad in Sevilla during college; then I ended up T.A.-ing a Spanish 101 class [at Washington University in St. Louis]! I was wracking my brain trying to remember and use her games for my class!”

“I kept in touch with EHS while I was in college because I had younger siblings [Beth and Max] as well as cousins who were still there. I would come back to see them play. And of course I’m still really close to my friends from high school.”

“I encourage every younger alumnus and alumna to stay connected to Edgewood. Not only have I enjoyed the experience of personally meeting many alumni since graduating—as well as parents of students, parents of alums—I’ve also benefitted professionally through contacts with alumni who’ve helped me along.”

Indeed, Rist is living a value she and many other alumni have expressed.

As she said when accepting her 2009 induction into the EHS Athletic Association Hall of Fame, “EHS will always be part of my life.”

1941 Annabelle Speropulos Mathews and her husband, George, had been married for 68 years before he died in March 2010. She lives in Mequon, Wisconsin.

1948 Thomas C. Hunt, PhD, authored “Education: Catholic (K through 12) in the United States” which appeared in the 2010 supplement of the New Catholic Encyclopedia. He also co-edited (with the director of the Hoover Presidential Library) a book entitled Urban Catholic Education: Tales of Twelve American Cities, which was published by the Alliance for Catholic Education Press. Tom and co-author Timothy Walch dedicated the book, which has received very positive publicity, to the “five generations of sister-teachers who educated tens of millions of American children, one soul at a time,” and acknowledged the sisters, brothers and priests who educated them.

1950 Robert W. Mulrooney and his wife celebrated their 50th anniversary in May 2010. Robert, who retired as vice president and general manager of Champion International, a paper products and building materials company, now lives in San Luis Obispo, California, and is active as a volunteer. He serves with the St. Vincent de Paul Society People’s Kitchen, as vice chair of the local chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and is president of the San Luis Obispo Community Assistance Council.

1952 Janet L. Canny Goodwin moved to Baraboo, Wisconsin, following her husband’s death in November 2009.

1956 Robert R. Dvorak recently published The Practice of Drawing as Meditation, which presents innovative drawing practices to promote self-awareness and the exploration of one’s creativity in a state of restful alertness. He lives in Sacramento, California.

1957 Duane E. Riley was inducted into the Speedskating Hall of Fame in Richmond, Virginia, in May 2010.

Duane was recognized for his years of contributions as a volunteer referee at the local, state, national and international levels. Duane and his wife, Elayne, live in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

1962 Eugene E. Durkee and his wife, Diane, are enjoying retirement. Formerly, Gene worked for Ameritech and served in the U.S. Navy (formerly Naval) Reserve. He now volunteers providing home delivery 20 CRUSADER CONNECTION, WINTER 2011

for the Hedberg Public Library in Janesville, Wisconsin, and inventories materials in the archives of the Rock County Historical Society.

1964 Jeffrey P. Hausmann was honored by the Society of St. Vincent DePaul District Council of Madison for his work as chairman of the committee that handled the Help Build Hope Capital Campaign, resulting in the construction of the new Center for Vincentian Charity in Madison.

1965 Lance G. Haas, a 2005 EHS Fine Arts Hall of Fame inductee and 1993 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year, was further honored at Wilmot Union High School. Lance was formerly a drummer for the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band, which he left when Steve Miller formed his own band in 1967. After that, Lance became a music teacher and has worked during his 41 years at Wilmot as a band and choral director as well as theatre technical director. The school chose to name its new auditorium in recognition of Lance and dedicated it on October 23, 2010. The dedication program included reminiscences and plenty of musical performances by choral, band, and drama students. In a proclamation submitted by the fine arts organizations at Wilmot, Lance’s work and influence on students were cited as were his efforts to bring national musical artists to the school and his support of community musical groups.

1967 Frank C. Boschi earned his MBA in marketing from the University of Rhode Island in December 2008 and is now pursuing a master’s degree in hotel administration at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, following an internship last summer at Martis Camp, a private country club in Lake Tahoe.

1971 Thomas G. Clauder made a 2010 election bid as the Republican candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly 79th District seat, but lost to incumbent Sondy Pope-Roberts. While running for office, Tom took unpaid leave from his job as railroad safety analyst for the state. He is a former Fitchburg police officer, served on the Dane County Board for 10 years and was mayor of Fitchburg for six years, and has been a member of a number of commissions.

Neil J. Fauerbach, partner and director of business development and marketing at Smith & Gesteland in Middleton, Wisconsin, was inducted into the Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM) Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at the AAM annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on June 24, 2010.

1973 Jean R. Deininger Hartman was selected as the 2010 Insurance Professional of the Year by the two Twin Cities chapters of the National Association of Insurance Women (NAIW) based on her commitment to the industry and participation in activities at the local, state and regional levels of NAIW. She has been a Certified Insurance Counselor since 1987 and also earned a Certified Professional Insurance Woman designator in 1998. Jean lives in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, with her husband Bill and their two children. She volunteers with the Pioneer Foundation of the Performing Arts and the St. Paul Association of Insurance Women.

Diane E. Sennett Hinke is a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in November 2009 and has since undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

She has been a Madison Relay for Life volunteer for six years and her team placed #1 out of 100 local teams for two consecutive years, raising more than $25,000 annually. Diane serves on the Relay for Life Committee and is in charge of luminaries for the event, which raises more money than any other midwest chapter and the most per capita in the U.S. Robert J. Tauschen (who, EHS was recently notified, died in May 2009) had been personally and publicly involved in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. He had been a congressional district coordinator for the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, advocating for federal initiatives in diagnosis, treatment and research. In addition, Bob started Raleigh’s annual Parkinson Awareness Day and was instrumental in the success of three Parkinson support groups, including one for those suffering from young onset Parkinson’s disease.

1974 H. Fred Rattunde is working in Mali, West Africa, as a sorgum breeder with the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics, the agency which has employed him for the past 12 years. Fred and his wife, Eva, work with hybridizers from national research organizations and farmer organizations to develop new varieties that will withstand demanding climates. Their children, Leah and Carla, are growing up with home bases in Madison, Remagen (Germany), and Bamako (Mali).

1975 Charles S. Shimanski is the Red Cross’ new senior vice president of disaster services. He is the top national disaster response official for the Washington, D.C.-based organization. Charley is a 25-year veteran of Colorado’s Alpine Rescue Team and was previously CEO of the Red Cross’ much-lauded Mile High chapter in Denver.

Thomas A. Walker, who is president and general manager of Mid-West Family Broadcasting, was featured in the December 2010 edition of Dane County Lifestyles. Tom is married to Jill M. Dal Santo-Walker ’75 and they have four daughters and a son. The article focused on Tom’s efforts to make his business, a group of local radio stations, a part of the local community through its dedication to helping area non-profit organizations. It also highlighted his involvement with Madison Ballet, with which he has been an annual performer in The Nutcracker as one of the adult “party-goers” ever since his oldest daughter was cast as a member of the ensemble nine years ago. Tom’s children benefit from dad’s “connections,” meeting the occasional musical performer or getting concert passes, but the family also enjoys time in outdoor activities throughout the year.

1979 Michelle A. Hart Behnke was recently elected to the American Bar Association Board of Governors. She practices commercial real estate, business and estate planning law while teaching at the University of Wisconsin Law School and serving on a number of community boards, including the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, the Madison Community Development Corporation SSM Healthcare of Wisconsin and Dean Health Plan, Inc.

1980 James P. “JP” Hansen, who lives in Omaha, Nebraska, won the 2010 Career Book of the Year awarded by Next Generation at the Book Expo of America in New York City. Michelle L. Griese Heitzinger is executive director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Madison. She was pleased to accept a contribution from the EHS Girls Golf team after coach Peggy Kelly Gierhart ’86 and the girls hosted the First Annual Crusade Fore A Cure Tournament at Maple Bluff Country Club earlier this year. The money raised will help support women with breast cancer in the Madison community.

1982 Allison R. Becker, ND is trained and licensed as a general practice physician with a doctorate of naturopathic medicine and a master’s degree in Chinese medicine. She works at the Naturopathic Family Clinic in Janesville, Wisconsin, where her clinical practice focuses on pain management, rheumatoid disorders, hormonal imbalance, women’s health, pediatrics and teen health. Allison uses modern diagnostic techniques blended with ancient Chinese medical diagnostics to investigate the root cause of her patients’ illnesses and works with other

health care providers to provide complementary and alternative medicine. She lives in Evansville with her husband, Ry Thompson.

John P. Gaffney was ordained a priest in the Society of Our Lady of the Blessed Trinity in July 2009. He will be doing missionary work.

1983 Shireen M. DeBruin Steinke lives in Rock City, Illinois and works for the Cars R Us Service Center.

She also volunteers as an EMT. Shireen and her husband, Jeffrey, have six children.

1984 Scott D. Driscoll lost his 13-year-old son, Quinn, who died while running track during gym class in June 2009. Quinn's death was caused by Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease in which the muscle of the heart is abnormal in the absence of an apparent cause. HCM is the leading cause of death in young athletes annually in the United States. Scott has established a foundation in his son’s name to raise awareness of the disorder and to promote screening and detection in order to prevent other children from dying. The foundation also provides community organizations, sports organizations, schools and other facilities with automated external defibrillators. 1985 Michael T. Donovan is now living in Chicago, Illinois and working for the law firm of Baker & McKenzie, LLP. He volunteers with Ladder Up, an organization that helps families climb above the poverty line by working with them to find financial solutions like getting them the tax refunds they deserve, securing the financial aid that makes higher education a reality, or putting them in touch with reputable banks so they can save on unnecessary fees.

1991 Gina M. DeGiovanni, MD married Mauro Piccinelli of Bologna, Italy, in December 2006. Three years later, they welcomed a son, Elio Antonio. His godmother is Eileen G. Harrington ’91, who made the trip from San Francisco to Italy for the baptism.

1993 Rebecca L. Parisi Smythe lives in Charleston, South Carolina, with her husband, Brian (married June 4, 2005) and their three-year-old son, Logan John. Rebecca received the 2010 Clinical Counselor/ Therapeutic Assistant of the Year Award from the Medical University of South Carolina, Institute of Psychiatry, for her work there with adult inpatient services. She also volunteers with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (Out of the Darkness) and United Way-South Carolina.

1997 Claire E. Bula is enjoying the challenge of fund raising as the manager of corporate relations for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Cathleen A. Huebner Dettmann was recently elected to the Order of the Coif, an honorary society that encourages excellence in legal education, recognizes scholarship in law and honors those who as lawyers, judges and teachers attained high distinction for their scholarly or professional accomplishments. Cathleen graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2009 and is an associate attorney at Haley Palmersheim, S.C. in Madison. She focuses on business law, business litigation and estate planning.

Anthony D. Vaccarello opened Terrapin Blue Chicago in May 2010 as a satellite office for the Terrapin Blue headquarters in Athens, Georgia. With his background in the motorcoach industry and leadership experiences, he has helped position Terrapin Blue as the industry leader for consulting services and business advancement. Anthony was recognized in 2009 by Who’s Who as an executive who demonstrates dedication, leadership and excellence in transportation services.

Michael C. Morey ’99 and his wife, Laureen, have two sons, Will and Benjamin. Mike works for Oakbrook Corporation in Madison, where he is the real estate management owner.

2001 Adam M. Burish was featured in a cover story of the Wisconsin State Journal sports section in August 2010 after his (now former) hockey team, the Chicago Blackhawks, won the Stanley Cup. Adam was pictured toting the huge trophy—the oldest in professional sports—for a photo and autograph session with admiring fans at the Eagles Nest Ice Arena in Verona, Wisconsin. Adam became a free agent at the end of the season and now skates with the Dallas Stars.

1996 Kathryn A. Logan Berry lives in San Antonio, Texas, where she works as a project control manager for Eagle Applied Sciences. She and her husband, Keith, have three children. Kathryn also volunteers as the dance director at her church.

Anthony L. Brown wrote, We’re Smelling Roses, an anthem to the UW-Badger trip to the 2011 Rose Bowl. The video for the song was directed by Logan Cascia, the same person who did Teach Me How to Bucky, and both videos have become YouTube hits.

Roses (produced under the pseudonym Anthony Lamarr) is a catchy rap number that celebrates the Badgers victorious season and pokes fun at their opponents. It features UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin, UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone, and former Rose Bowl standout Ron Dayne. It also features lyricist JDante and singer LaVar Jovan Charleston. The song was put together in four days (before the Rose Bowl bid was official) but in time to film some footage from the Badgers’ last regular season game against Northwestern.

2002 Andrea S. Pleimling accepted her law degree from Marquette Law School in May 2010 and is a member of the Wisconsin Bar. She moved to Estero, Florida, where she passed the Florida Bar exam and is now an attorney with the Conroy Simberg law firm. Andrea practices general law with an emphasis on insurance.

2004 Bryan M. Wacker graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in marketing and now works as a customer service representative for M&I Bank in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

2005 Mindy L. Adam studied at UW-Whitewater and now works for Walgreens as a pharmacy technician.

Judah F. Yockey graduated cum laude from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in May 2010 with a bachelor of science degree in astronomy and physics and a bachelor of arts in Spanish language and literature. This year he is pursuing graduate work in theoretical physics at NAU in advance of applying to other institutions, including Oxford University in England.

2006 Kelsey A. Donald Cacic earned a bachelor of science degree from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, in May 2010. She now lives with her husband, Robert M. Cacic ’05, in Waldorf, Maryland.

Justin K. Laxton works for Klaetsch Public Affairs Strategies LLC in Madison and lives in Verona, Wisconsin, with his wife, Kaitlyn.

2007 Paderic C. “Paddy” Driscoll has joined the U.S. Navy and is serving on the USS San Jacinto based out of Norfolk, Virginia.

2009 Connor J. Cosgrove transferred this fall from St. Cloud State to the University of Minnesota to play on the football team where his father is the Golden Gophers defensive coordinator. Though Connor’s former EHS coach Al Minnaert wasn’t sure it was “the right move“ for the wide receiver, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Connor was recently diagnosed with leukemia and now has his family nearby, helping him battle the disease. So far, the prognosis as he undergoes chemotherapy is encouraging.

Devin M. Turner earned his private pilot license in summer 2010.

Thomas S. D. Holaday is currently on the Dean's List at UW-Madison School of Engineering and is head of the UW Hoofers Mountain Biking Club.

2010 Dieter B. Bukolt earned his private pilot license in August 2010, just before heading off to college.

Former Faculty/Staff Colleen K. Brady, who taught social studies at EHS, 1981-1986, is now head of school at Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.

Regis Howden, OP, died on June 9, 2010, at St. Dominic Villa. Sister Regis served as EHS librarian, 1970-1995, and in 1993 received the Alumni Appreciation Award.

M. Teresita Kelly, OP, died at St. Dominic Villa on October 7, 2010. Sister Teresita taught art for a year at EHS (1953-54) before teaching for the next 22 years in the Edgewood College Art Department.

Maureen McPartland, OP, was featured recently in the Archdiocese of Dubuque’s Witness newspaper for her offical appointment as chancellor of the Archdiocese. Sister Maureen taught religious studies at EHS, 1981-1987.

MARRIAGES Justin K. Laxton ’06 married Kaitlyn Westby on June 19, 2010.

Mollie M. Roach ’00 and Christopher F. Harrington were married on July 31, 2010 at Allen Centennial Gardens in Madison. Mollie and Chris are living in Hermitage, Tennessee.

Paula F. Schmelzer ’90 and James K. Woodward were married at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on August 27, 2010.

Paula and Jim are now living in Rio, Wisconsin.

“Glory Days” Super Year At their annual recognition dinner in June 2010 the Madison Sports Hall of Fame gave a Special Achievement Award to Edgewood High School athletics for producing four state champions—in boys’ and girls’ golf, baseball, and girls’ soccer in a single season (2008-2009).

EHS Athletes Included in List of Madison’s All-Around Best To determine the city’s top male high school athlete—someone who excelled in at least two sports—Wisconsin State Journal sports columnist Tom Oates selected a panel of 50 former and current athletes, coaches, administrators, referees and sports reporters, of whom 48 returned valid ballots. Each voter was asked to select 10 athletes from the postWorld War II era and rank them from 1 to 10. Voters were allowed to consider an athlete’s post-high school career in making their list.

Pat Richter (Madison East, 1959), noted as being “by far the best, as a person and an athlete,” was chosen #1 by a wide margin (422 points), with point counts falling off rapidly for the others who made the Top 60 list (#10 received only 83 points). Edgewood athletes who appeared on at least one ballot, putting them in the Top 60 were: Dennis Sweeney ’63 (#12) Tom Shipley ’69 (#33) Don Schaefer ’49 (#37) Tim Sweeney ’66 (#39) Rich Newton ’92 (#43) Tom McCormick ’47 (#47) Mike Rieder ’60 (#48) Jim Holmes ’54 (#49) Cody Strang ’09 (#54) Mario Minnaert ’09 (#58).

In an accompanying article entitled “Snubbed!” Oates listed 20 athletes he thought were deserving of votes but had been bypassed in the process. Among them were Edgewood athletes Craig Carlson ’69, Stan Williams ’70, Adriel Hansbro ’02, Alvah Hansbro ’02 and Craig Meier ’04.

Jessica L. Potts Copeland ’02 and her husband, James, are the parents of a daughter, Athena Maria, born on January 9, 2010. The Copelands live in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Cathleen A. Huebner Dettmann ’97 and her husband, Mark, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Fiona Mairead, in March 2009.

They live in Monona, Wisconsin.

James S. Kleckner ’99 and his wife, Veronica, have a son, William James, who was born on November 30, 2010. William’s grandparents are EHS graduates Kathryn J. Doherty Kleckner ’71 and the late Dr. Steven C. Kleckner ’71.

Ann M. Lenling ’84 and her husband, Jeffrey Schlapp, added twin boys, William and Henry, to their family on August 16, 2010. The twins join a sister, Grace. The family lives in Chicago, Illinois.

Justin H. Lessner ’97 and his wife, Andrea, are parents of their first child, a daughter named Sydney Reese, born in Chicago on August 14, 2010.

Robert McFarlane ’96 and his wife, Kimberly, are the parents of twins, a girl named Sloan and a boy named Graeme, on September 24, 2010.

Kathleen E. Sweeney Minahan ’96 and her husband, John, welcomed their second child, Molly Kathleen, born on May 15, 2010. Molly’s brother is Charlie. Grandparents are Tim ’66 and Ann (Jimieson ’66) Sweeney.

Jason M. Schultz ’02 and his wife, Megan McGrath, welcomed a son, Gabriel Michael McGrath Schultz, on June 23, 2010. The Schultz family lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Lori A. Walther Venturella ’98 and her husband, Nick, are parents of a son, Luke, born on June 27, 2009.
