Ahoy there!

Guests set sail on the high seas in search of treasure. This year’s auction and social featured the return of a sit-down dinner and a quicker silent auction. Thanks to the generosity of attendees and donors, the event raised more than $150,000, including the Open Appeal that raised $70,000 and the Cash or Credit Raffle that brought in over $20,000. The winner of the grand prize was Val Mack, who took the $5,000 cash prize. Save the date for next year’s fundraiser, with more changes, on April 26, 2013.

A new, yet traditional, look With the finalization of the corporate separation of the three Edgewood schools, a new logo has been created that keeps the look more consistent with the other schools on campus and better reflects the Dominican heritage of Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart.

On May 18, the class of 2012 exited the Bishop’s Doors to a glorious evening and a round of congratulatory handshakes from faculty and staff. This year’s graduation liturgy included participation by members of the Alumni Advisory Council.

After nearly a year of reviewing options and exploring subtle shifts in the school colors to be more in keeping with a traditional maroon and gold appropriate for multiple applications, and the creation of a set of guidelines to try to standardize the look of communications, Edgewood is happy to begin using the modified shield featured in the banner and to introduce the nameplate shown at the right on its stationery and other print and electronic materials. This fall will also see the launch of a revamped website.

Leaving with a Sense of Pride in Edgewood High School’s Accomplishments and Position Judd Schemmel, EHS President

I

T’S BEEN A LITTLE MORE than two months since the announcement of my decision that 2012-13 would be my final year in service as President of Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart.

As we worked on a communication plan to share this decision with the school’s different constituencies, I remember thinking that the summer edition of the Crusader Connection would be one of my final opportunities to communicate directly with the alumni of EHS, to thank them for all they have done for the high school, and to remind them that Edgewood continues to be a special place.

Looking back over the past seven years, much has been accomplished that evokes a strong sense of pride. Most notably, Edgewood continues to passionately pursue a mission to educate young men and women for lives of learning, service and personal responsibility. I’m continually amazed by those who comprise our student body and marvel at their growth from uncertain and impressionable freshmen, to capable, confident seniors ready for life’s next chapter.

This growth never happens in isolation. To our sponsoring Congregation, the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, you have been and continue to be trailblazers. We celebrate you and our Dominican heritage

and strive to live out our Dominican values each and every day. To our parents, I say thank you for taking an active role in the educational journey of your sons and daughters. Your involvement in Edgewood has set us apart for 131 years and will continue to do so in the future. To the faculty, staff and Board of Trustees, both current and former, you have my undying admiration. Your dedication and care for our students, their families and for each other will be an inspiration I will take with me on my own personal and professional journey.

And to our alumni, I want to thank you for the positive example you continue to set for current EHS students and for all the support you have provided to the high school since the days you occupied our classrooms.

To be sure, there have been challenges over the past seven years, some of them unpredictable and some of them self made, but at every turn, there have also been individuals at the ready to see the high school through all that it encounters. The Edgewood community is strong and I’m proud that the work we’ve pursued together over the last seven years has, in some measure, added to that strength.

As the high school undertakes the search for its next President, this transition is an opportunity for the high school community to reflect on all that has taken place over the past decade and to experience a sense of renewal that is often a natural outgrowth of new leadership. By almost any measure, the last decade at Edgewood has been marked by strong success. In the classroom, our

students continue to excel gaining admittance to 85 of the top 100 colleges and universities in the country. Outside the classroom, Edgewood has experienced remarkable success in the arts and athletics as we continue to provide a slate of cocurricular programs that meets the diverse interests of our student body. Fiscally, the high school has worked very hard to establish financial soundness while maintaining tuition and financial aid programs that allow us to be an affordable option for families from across Dane County. We now have a strong strategic direction, a vision for the EHS facilities and a mission based business model all of which will lead toward positive, productive decisions being made as the high school moves forward.

As our collective eyes look toward the future in education and at Edgewood, the ideas, passion and personality of a new leader will bring fresh perspective and analysis that can build on our past success and move the high school to even greater heights. While I will cherish my years at Edgewood and be an ambassador for this great high school all my days, I believe a good leader must also recognize when it’s time to step aside and allow a lead voice to shepherd the good and important work that takes place at Edgewood every day. Now is that time for me personally, and I believe that now is that time for Edgewood.

I look forward to a productive and impactful final year in service to Edgewood.

I ask for your continued care, support and prayers for Edgewood in the years to come, and together let’s ensure that Edgewood has all it needs to continue to shape young lives, serve the community and live out its Dominican values of Truth, Justice Compassion, Community and Partnership.

The search committee met and reviewed the results of a survey sent to the Edgewood

community that received strong participation and provided helpful information.

The Board of Trustees will meet in midAugust to discuss the 5-year strategic plan for EHS to frame the characteristics needed in the next leader.

The committee plans a public launch of the search in early September.

The Value of My Catholic Education My education at Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart has been a great blessing.

The loving community that surrounded me has enabled me to grow in my faith while pursuing a rigorous academic journey. Along the way I have gained confidence, joy, relationships, memories and skills that I will cherish as I move on to college and a vocation. My Catholic education has been a privilege that the vast majority of people don’t have. I intend to use everything Edgewood has given me to its fullest potential as I continue my walk of faith and service.

Meghan Lancaster, ’12 Throughout my time at Edgewood High School, I have had wonderful teachers who have taught me the importance of faith, integrity and servant leadership. I have been amazed by the selfless attitudes of the Campus Ministry staff. They are totally devoted to spreading the love and knowledge of Christ. I have also greatly enjoyed the monthly Masses and prayer services that I believe are integral in keeping students focused on faith. I am confident that I will benefit greatly in my future endeavors from the gifts of faith, values, and role models that I have received at Edgewood.

The theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week was “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” Concluding the week was the annual all-school assembly featuring class level competitions in various games such as “Loaves and Fishes,” “David and Goliath” and the volleyball tournament. Points awarded throughout the week for different activities, including a black and white dress-up day and a food drive, were added together to declare the seniors as this year’s winner of the Dominican Shield.

40 Years of Show Choir In April, the Crusader Singers Show Choir & Jazz Ensemble Extravaganza Concert was held, celebrating 40 years of joy for choir students who love combining song and dance, and for all who have heard them over the years. The Crusader Director Dennis McKinley has guided the group, which was begun in 1972 by Sister Rita Claire Dorner, OP, for a quarter of his 44 years at EHS. The Show Choir grew out of earlier ensembles that date back to the high school’s earliest days, but which often focused on small group and barbershop style performances of older standards or large choruses singing works from the religious and classical repertoire. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the greater range of movement and emphasis on pop arrangements began to change the notion of glee from a staid nostalgic format to a more visual entertainment.

For the first four years, Sr. Rita Claire Dorner, OP, directed the Show Choir, followed by a string of other music teachers who oversaw it for periods of varying length, including current faculty members Ann Nelson (1998-2002) and Dennis McKinley ’63 (1990-1998 and 2004-present).

At the April concert, the Show Choir performed a medley of music from each of the four decades of its history, from Life Is a Song Worth Singing to All that Jazz to Don’t Stop Believing. McKinley always closes performances with The Blessing of Aaron because, “As a Catholic school, could you leave an audience in any better way than asking God’s blessing upon them?…Lots of tears of joy, sadness, relief and love have been shed during that song.”

In addition to the Show Choir, the exciting EHS Jazz Ensemble – which is 14 years old at EHS this year – performed music by Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington with guest artist Jeff Wohlbach on trumpet. Wohlbach is a graduate of the Juilliard School and UW-Madison, is a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Brass Quintet, and has performed with the Dublin Philharmonic, the Super World Orchestra and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy.

With all the enthusiasm (and no need for auto-tuning!) of the professionals performing on the popular television dramedy, Glee, Edgewood High School’s Crusader Singers put on an animated show that thoroughly entertains audiences at concerts and other venues in the Madison area.

The annual Fine Arts Festival in February, now well into its second decade, once again included an opportunity for proud grandparents to come on campus and spend some time with their grandchildren, some of whom performed in the Student Talent Showcase that followed breakfast in the Commons.

At the Student Talent Showcase, a full range of performing arts were on display and drew enthusiatic applause from a packed gymnasium.

Students Demonstrate Their Amateur Talents and Professional Guest Artists Perform and Teach On Wednesday of the Fine Arts Festival, it was an opportunity for groups of students and individuals who were not part of the Showcase to give presentations.

And did you realize that as a valued member of the Edgewood community you are cordially invited to all of them? I know it sounds like a lot, but if you think about all the Fine Arts-related events like plays, spring musicals, concerts, Crusader sports team events, Grandparents’ Day, Edgewood in the Community, Trivia Night, Crusader Kickoff, the Auction and Social, Living the Mission, Wilke Golf Outing, Memorial Prayer Services, reunions and all the other times people gather to celebrate, you can see how it quickly those opportunities for you to “come home” to Edgewood.

Throughout this issue of the Crusader Connection you will find information on many of the events and programs. The Edgewood website, www.edgewoodhs.org, also has a complete listing of all events with dates and times, and soon the calendar will be organized so you can more easily locate the particular kinds of events you especially enjoy.

I’m hoping you will consider attending one of the many gatherings or perhaps you can help by volunteering for an event. We are always in need of the variety of “talent” supplied by our volunteer parents, parents of alumni, alumni, grandparents and friends.

Campus Notes Students Qualify for the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program Juniors Connor Curliss, Cassidy McDonald, John Merfeld, Matthew Molina, Cruz Morales, Thomas Richards, Nicholas Sanders, Maggie Seibert and Kathleen Wall took the 2011-2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and met requirements to enter the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Career Week A Big Success Student Services was pleased to host Career Week, April 17-19. The event, held every other year, gives students a unique opportunity to talk with people enthusiastic about their careers. This year more than 20 occupations were represented.

Among the people who met with students were FBI representatives and former Board chair, parent of alumni and attorney Joe Boucher.

The Wayfarer Receives “Superior” and Nomination for “Highest Award” The 2011 issue of The Wayfarer, Edgewood’s student literary and art magazine, received a rank of “Superior – Nominated for Highest Award” from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The Wayfarer is the only Wisconsin high school literary magazine this year to receive this honor. Edgewood Student Plays Selected for Young Playwrights Festival Concluding a year-long program during which professional writers taught 450 teens in the Madison area the fine art of play writing, 20 top scripts were chosen for possible staging at the Young Playwrights Festival. Four Edgewood seniors enrolled in Modern Drama were among the 20 finalists: Katy Chryst, Rebecca Jensen, Kelsey Rayment and Brittany Smith. Selected for performance on May 8 were Chryst’s Senioritis and Smith’s Imaginary Friends.

Technology in the Classroom In recent years, EHS has made commitments to increase the capability of the high school’s wireless network and has made laptop computers available to faculty for use in their classrooms. This year saw Edgewood step into the emerging world of electronic textbooks with the freshman FIT Biology course. There were reasons to consider the use of such textbooks—unit cost to EHS, accessing current/updated material, ease on the weight of backpacks, etc. but assessment of this initiative is that its outcome has been mixed. While aspects of this initiative provided value to the students,

Remembering Sr. Alphonsine In response to our request for memories about “Alphie,” we received this anecdote: It was my freshman year and I had never been in a private school before. We had language lab with Sr. Alphonsine as moderator. She had to leave the room briefly and, when she did, I started goofing around and talking to people. I didn’t see her returning, but when she did she shot me a stern look and said. “I will see you after this lab is over.”

“Oh no,” I thought, “I’ve just started at Edgewood…I’ve never been in trouble with a nun before…and now I’m for sure going to have to go to detention…and my parents are going to be mad… and I will be grounded for sure!”

After the class, Sister let everyone leave and then called me to the front. She said, “It might be fun to goof off when no one is looking, but you need to do the right thing whether or not someone is watching you.”

She didn’t punish me and she just let me go. It was simple, but I have taken that comment with me through life. I have used it whenever I needed to check my own behavior or actions and have used it with my kids. Now, I know what she meant — someone is always watching and He is our Heavenly Father. Thank you, Sister Alphonsine!

faculty and high school, we also learned more about working through some of the unpredictability that comes with relying on access to the internet. In the 2012-13 school year, the high school is working on plans to utilize EHS-provided iPads in one selected course. Course reading materials would be preloaded onto the iPad, thus eliminating the problems with internet websites. The high school is also working on a major initiative that would enable the placement of a Smartboard or wireless ceiling-mounted projector in each classroom. As we move down this ever-changing road of educationbased technology, the high school will do so with an open and inquiring mind, we will seek partnerships that can move the high school’s efforts forward, and we will retain our focus on pursuing those opportunities that enhance the exceptional educational experience provided to students at Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart.

Remembering Loved Ones with a Named Scholarship About 60% of the Edgewood endowment is dedicated to providing tuition assistance each year to deserving students based on financial need. To establish a named endowment, amounts of $10,000 or greater are currently required; however, anyone may contribute an amount of any size to an existing fund. Some examples are listed below. Lance J. Johnson ’87 Memorial Scholars Grant This renewable scholarship was established by Erik Johnson, Peter O. Johnson and the Hy Cite Corporation. Recipients must have financial need, be a good student active in athletics, and preferably be of Hispanic background.

David J. Knutson ’84 Memorial Grant David’s mother, Bonnie Knutson-Budge, set up this fund in his memory. It gives additional assistance to a student receiving financial aid who is enrolled in band or music performance classes.

William J. Roth ’36 Memorial Diversity Scholarship The first scholarship from this fund was awarded in 2007. Recipients of non-Caucasian heritage with financial need are chosen as freshmen and may have the scholarship renewed for four years with a 3.0 gpa, school involvement and commitment to the Sinsinawa Dominican values.

Nancy Ott Trainor ’52 Grant Established by Nancy Ott Trainor in 1985 and supplemented annually, this fund now assists one or more students in financial need each year.

Theodore Jerome Woelfel ’64 Memorial Grant This need-based grant was set up by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Woelfel in memory of their son, Theodore.

Will the Kids Really Miss 1%?

Every year Edgewood benefits from bequests small or large left by alumni, family members and friends. Did you ever consider leaving just 1% of your final estate to the school? Lois Krantz: “It was time to do something for the arts as well’ This spring ENCORE, a group of supporters of the arts at Edgewood, was established (see sidebar).

Among those who attended was Lois Krantz.

When her three sons were at Edgewood High School in the 1980s and ’90s, she became an active parent volunteer, working at Edgefest, assisting at sporting events, organizing graduation events and helping with the auction.

She even worked as an interim staff member in the Business Office for about four months during a transition period between business officers.

An arts lover in general, Lois plays piano, has been a member of her church choir and is now taking violin lessons. While the three Krantz boys — Steven ’89, Jason ’91 and Christopher ’95 — participated in sports, Lois always took a personal interest in the school’s performing arts and enjoyed attending the dramas and musicals.

“Participating in the arts may be a recreational activity for some of the students, but for others, it could be the start of something much more significant in their lives. After seeing the quality of the performances, I have been so impressed by what these young people are capable of and the work of the faculty, directors and others who help them accomplish it that I wanted to support them.” As a result Lois joined ENCORE, the newly formed fundraising group that provides support for the fine arts programs and activities at Edgewood. She notes that having financially supported the athletic programs she now felt “It was time to do something for the arts as well.”

Lois has also become interested in C.R.O.S.S., an optional retreat program open to juniors and seniors that is hosted by the campus ministry program. “It’s another of the differences about Edgewood that make it such a great place and a wonderful environment for kids.”

She encourages others to visit the school, attend or help at events and donate. “You get around the enthusiasm of the students, the satisfaction of the parents and the dedication of donors and it just “catches” you. I always enjoyed the camaraderie of the staff and parents and feel this helped create a great atmosphere for learning.” The time spent volunteering for various functions was always fun and so worthwhile. I’ve always felt very appreciated by the people at the school — they truly care that you care.”

ENCORE Celebrates the Arts at EHS

Invitees to the inauguration of ENCORE, people who wish to support the arts at Edgewood, were treated to a preview performance of numbers from West Side Story and were asked to make pledges toward a fund that would be dedicated to enhancing the drama, music, art and creative writing courses and fine arts cocurricular activities sponsored by Edgewood. The gathering raised $52,450 in gifts and pledges.

Next year’s gathering will be a preview of student performances the Sunday before the Fine Arts Festival. E Club Supports Crusader Spirit The E Club has a long history at Edgewood High School; in fact some say there has been an informal E Club for more than 60 years. In early February current parents, parents of alumni, alumni and friends gathered at Mansion Hill at an event featuring guest speaker Bob Harlan of the Green Bay Packers to benefit Edgewood Athletics.

The mission of the E Club is to support the Edgewood Crusaders and build community while nurturing the legacy, tradition and values that come from participating in high school athletics.

E Club imembers are dedicated to enhancing the Edgewood High School athletic program through contributions to a special account that helps to purchase equipment, maintain and upgrade facilities

Values Remain for a Lifetime As he enters his second three-year term on the Board of Trustees, Paul Cuta ’83 is the parent of an EHS alumna (Carley ’12) and a current student (Alexa ’14) and is an architect who has been generous with both his time, his professional skills and his financial support. “I was honored to be asked to serve on the Board,” he says, “because Edgewood has always been important to me as a place of community and lifelong friendships as well as a solid preparation for life.”

Paul appreciates his Edgewood education because it provided a strong foundation for his later life. “I remember Wade DallaGrana just back from his time in Lesotho and the enthusiasm he had as a new teacher. Don Regina’s class was probably the hardest I took, but when I got to college I realized that the rigor he insisted on played and instrumental role in my college success. Overall, I’m amazed by the dedication of the teachers — some of mine are still there today teaching my daughters.” As for the quality of education offered today, Paul thinks, “The rigor and preparation are even stronger today. The faculty seem to keep striving to improve on the past and make modifications to the curriculum that address the changing content needs of students and the changing technological means for providing that information.”

Paul says, “My time on the Board has been very worthwhile. It has been a learning experience as well as a giving one. In the past year, we’ve spent a lot of time talking in detail about the school’s Dominican identity and Catholic education in general and ways in which the teaching orders of Sisters are working to ensure that their legacy is carried on even as schools like Edgewood transition to a faculty and staff that comes from the laity. The Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa are really an incredible group of women — something I didn’t fully appreciate as a kid in high school.” He also has been impressed by “the diverse backgrounds of Board members who share their knowledge and expertise from a diverse range of professions which in turn, provides a positive impact on the planning and oversight of the school.” Though the transition of the Edgewood campus from a single corporation to three very separate institutions sharing a common heritage was already underway when he joined the Board, Paul is enjoying the opportunity to watch the process of each developing its own distinct identity while maintaining the unity of a collective Dominican institution or campus.

He serves on the Buildings and Grounds Subcommittee and has been working with the

administration as it develops a master plan for continued growth and enhancements of the school’s facilities. In addition to the Krantz Center for athletics that opened in 1995 and the K-12 Sonderegger Science Center that was opened in January 1999, the chapel has been redone, the auditorium and hallway have been remodeled, all the classrooms in the original building are updated, the lower music hallway has been completely renovated along with a complete renovation of the Band and Choral rooms, the Commons has a new look and now the Wilke Gym is being upgraded. It’s been an incremental process, involving even the bathrooms and water fountains, but the facility is really greatly improved while retaining many of its traditional aspects. “I think alumni and parents of former students would be pleased if they came back to visit. They’d see the results of many incremental and systematic improvements that have been made over the past decade to improve the environment for the students.”

This summer, the Wilke Gym is undergoing a substantial renovation, “much of which may seem cosmetic,” Paul notes, “but which really will improve the functionality, comfort and sense of space needed for a facility that serves not only as a gymnasium but also the site for graduation, liturgies and other special events.” Although he credits the lead donor for making it possible, Paul’s firm, Engberg Anderson, is contributing a significant amount of time and talent in helping with the design and details.

Perhaps the two main things people will notice right away are the lighting and the paint scheme. The gym has had notoriously dim lighting in the past and now it should be much brighter. The walls, floor, padded back panels, and team chairs are also getting a fresher, cleaner and more formal look in colors more closely matching the school’s maroon and gold and a more prominent display of the school shield and values to remind and reaffirm the core values of our EHS community. What will really make a difference in the experience for those attending events though, will be the more comfortable and safer bleacher seating that will be installed.

Paul remembers Edgefest fondly as an event that “really showed the sense of selfless community that makes Edgewood so special.

He thinks Edgewood in the Community could become that kind of event. “While many parents already participate, it would be terrific if there were more alumni who also began to come back to be part of the day of volunteer service.” He also thinks it would help break the perception that sometimes prevails in the community that Edgewood is an elitist school, only for the privileged. “By and large, we share similar diversity to public schools at many levels; a cross-section of the socioeconomic spectrum which should be an invisible difference at EHS, especially if we do our job of celebrating our distinguishing characteristics that reinforce our core values and highlight what really makes us different.”

What makes Edgewood different, he feels, is “the emphasis on not only encouraging, but insisting, that every student does his or her best. The dedication to providing opportunities for the individual expression of talents in athletics and the fine arts, the science journal, the literary magazine, the numerous clubs and activities that promote a sense of responsibility, self-confidence and respect for the dignity and worth of others, the unique classes, accountability and the open discussion of faith and values — these are the things that Edgewood can offer that build a lifetime foundation of commitment, community and compassion for our kids.”

Those differences are also what Paul thinks make it possible for students to succeed later. Kids heading off to college should be open to anything, ready to discover new aspects of themselves and new interests, but,” he cautions, “don’t forget where you came from and the foundation you were given. They need to critically look at the value of the options available and measure one against the other. College is a big experiment and there are infinite possibilities of what ‘might be,’ because you don’t know where the journey may lead. Just don’t stray too far.”

We were so surprised and pleased when we reached our first $10,000 milestone in such a short time, and we continue to be excited and motivated to increase the amount, enabling us to award more scholarships to more children of alumni. This year, we were able to award one scholarship to a student for the 2012-2013 school year, and we are proud of our Edgewood High School alumni for their willingness to participate and their generosity toward the campaign.

The Results Are In… …and our alumni have come through again!

Thank you for your generous response to the fall mailing, the phonathon and other requests for donations to the Annual Fund, as well as gifts to the dedicated Scholarship Fund and other designated donations. In total, alumni this year contributed $388,362.94. The size of individual gifts varied from less than $10 to more than $10,000, but every contribution is truly appreciated and boosts the effort toward increasing participation. The graph shows how each class finished in terms of its percentage of members making a gift of any kind.

HERE ARE a number of fun, exciting and entertaining events held throughout the year at Edgewood High School, but the one that leaves the most lasting impression on me each year is the Living the Mission event that is held annually in the fall. This is a wonderful time when we choose to honor those members of the EHS community who have been influential to the success of Edgewood on many different levels or represent the values that Edgewood strives to instill.

Each year Edgewood chooses to honor individuals who have been successful in their lives in a number of different categories; whether they have shown an extraordinary level of community service, utilized their athletic or fine arts skills to achieve greatness in a discipline or industry, or dedicated themselves to the furthering of Christian education. We also honor those who have been so generous to the school, ensuring that students continue to receive an exemplary educational and extra-curricular education. It creates a terrific sense of satisfaction and inspiration when we bring together those exceptional donors whose contributions have been integral to helping Edgewood High School carry out its mission with the alumni who have used their high school education to foster and develop their skills and talents and others who have enhanced the value of the school by giving of their time and talent.

Building Enduring Relationships When Sharon R. McKinley Betlach ’60 was announced as the recipient of the 2011 UW Badger Football Captains Cup, she received a standing ovation. The award, presented to a non-player or coach, for unselfish commitment to the UW football program, was well-deserved. As the recruiting secretary and all-around office “fixer,” Sharon has contact with every team recruit and his family.

Working in the UW Athletic Department is a second career for Sharon, who taught middle school math for 28 years.

She has been working for the football team for more than a decade and in that time has learned just about every facet of running the office, from walking assistant coaches through paperwork to helping with schedules to giving reassurance to a committed recruit having second thoughts about attending in the fall. She notes that she has become proficient at budgeting her time and multi-tasking in order to “do whatever needs to be done to help them.”

Perhaps the biggest influence Sharon has is that she is a calming voice that parents and recruits trust. She starts building relationships with the families on their first campus visit — which is usually to a home football game. “I seek them out,” she says.

“The coaches are really good about sharing my name and that begins to make me credible in their eyes as a person who can help them.”

UW head football coach Bret Bielema notes, “She’s the same voice they hear every time they call in with questions.” Says Sharon, “I want to reassure those moms that there’s somebody here for them and their

sons. I’m going to be here when that young man has a question. I don’t always know the answers, but I can always direct him to the person who does. And,” she says with a patient smile, “the moms call me constantly.”

Sharon acknowledges that “Recruiting can be stressful for families. The ultimate goal is you want that young person to go where he’s comfortable. We hope it’s here for most of them, but if it’s not, you still want to help them move on to a place where they’re going to play their best and achieve their best academically.”

While she lets the coaches address issues related to the game and the team, “These kids are not going to play football forever,” Sharon says, “so I always ask, what school’s name do you want on your diploma?”

Of UWMadison, Sharon notes, “This is a great institution.

Our two sons, who weren’t athletes, graduated from here. I know the opportunities available to them because of the education and all the networking that can go on.”

And as for those befuddled or worried new recruits who show up at her desk? “You just give them a hug and tell them, ‘This is going to be your second home.’”

Brothers’ Family Business is Popping Brothers Timothy P. ’80 and Thomas R. ’82 Virnoche were profiled in the Wisconsin State Journal’s “In the Family Business” column. They are the co-owners of Badger Popcorn & Supply Co., a Madison-based concession supply and distribution company that offers more than 2,000 different items.

The company was founded out of a popcorn wagon operated by Harvey O’Neill at local fairs in the 1940s and was eventually incorporated in 1953.

The brothers’ father, Dick Virnoche, after spending 19 years in sales and sales management for a major pharmaceutical company, had decided a career change was best for his family and became a stockbroker.

It was in this context that he met and began working with O’Neill, who was in his seventies, and wanted to sell Badger Popcorn and then invest the proceeds. Less than a year later, in 1978, Badger Popcorn became the Virnoche family business when Dick, using virtually the entire family savings — including their house — bought the business.

Dick and Ellen Virnoche doubled the size of the business twice in 15 years before the boys bought it from them and took over in 1993. Badger Popcorn now has sales of more than $5 million annually. Their signature product, popcorn, comes in a range of flavors (more than half a ton is popped and packaged daily!), and in addition, the company sells supplies, equipment and finished product for cotton candy, nachos, snacks, hot and cold beverages, ices, hot dogs, games and more.

Thomas J. Kretschman ’59 not only has his own airplane, he has his own airport. In a feature article on the cover of the Local section of the July 22 Wisconsin State Journal, Tom was profiled as one of the area’s aviation enthusiasts.

Tom owns Sugar Ridge Airport south of Verona, one of hundreds of privately owned airports and hangars scattered throughout rural Wisconsin. His hangar houses not only his plane, which he uses to provide aerial tours, but also a display of Korean War planes, equipment, uniforms and other items. In addition, he can house about a dozen other small privately-owned airplanes.

Tom says that compared to many pilots, “I’m spoiled because I walk out my [house] door and here I am.” A project he built himself, the hangar is made of reused materials and the runway is composed of crushed construction rubble. At 1,600 feet in length, “It’s a bit like landing on an aircraft carrier.” The runway lights can be remotely controlled by pilots and a beacon lamp mounted to an old windmill guides pilots to the

Robert A. Kozarek ’07 was a well-liked star EHS football player, a 6’4” 275pound offensive and defensive tackle who was recruited by college teams and was on his way to a football camp when he suffered a tragic auto accident that left his lower body paralyzed. Rob graduated from Edgewood, entered the University of Illinois in 2008, and finished his degree in English.

Not a person to give up easily, Rob decided after several years of not participating in sports that he missed the rigors of training and in spring 2011 he joined the UI wheelchair track team. Actually, he just wanted the exercise, not necessarily to compete, but the coach said “You’re doing the work. You might as well do the racing, too.”

The 2011 Chicago marathon was Rob’s first, and just his second race competing in a wheelchair. When the race was over, Rob felt much of the same euphoria he remembered from the football field. “I didn’t have any inkling I’d feel that way again. By the time the Chicago was done, I was hooked.”

Rob completed the Chicago Marathon in 2:09 and then looked for other races so he could get his time down sufficiently to qualify for the Boston Marathon. When he dropped his time to 1:50 at the Palm Beaches Marathon, he was able to enter the Boston Marathon in April, which he finished in 1:54.

His coach notes that “Big Rob” or “Ogre” or “Shrek” as his teammates call him is “a big

guy so he has to work extra hard to get up those hills.” In addition, Rob must propel himself only using his upper back and arms because he doesn’t have use of his abdominal muscles.

Rob is applying to law school at Champaign-Urbana, hoping to become a disability advocate, and planning to continue working out with the wheelchair team. He has raced in several half-marathons since Boston and wants to enter more full marathons as well. He says, “It’s really created another direction in my life that I had no idea I’d be this happy with. Another journey. You get a curveball thrown at you, and you just have to run with it.”

1948 Thomas C. Hunt, PhD, a professor in the School of Education and Allied Professions and a fellow in the Center for Catholic Education at the University of Dayton, recently co-edited a book entitled At the Heart of the Church: Selected Documents of Catholic Education. He and his coeditor, Fr. Ronald Nuzzi, then presented on the book at the annual meeting of the National Catholic Educational Association in Boston. At that meeting Tom also presented on his 2010 book, co-edited with Timothy Walch, entitled Urban Catholic Education: Tales of Twelve American Cities. Earlier in the year he wrote endorsements for two books focusing on changes in Catholic education: Closing Chapters by Thomas G. Welsh and When the Sisters Said Farewell by Michael P. Caruso, SJ. Most recently the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame published Tom’s 26th book, Handbook of FaithBased Schools, a collection of church documents — with commentary — affirming the role of the Catholic school in the Church’s mission and evangelical efforts.

1949

Paul K. Nienaber (see deceased) served as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam. His specialty was meteorology. Among his many awards were the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Paul was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full miltary honors in February. Among his survivors is his sister, Anne K. Nienaber Dhuey ’47.

1950 Bro. Bernard F. Donahoe, CSC has celebrated his 60th Jubilee as a Brother of Holy Cross. He taught at several high schools before becoming a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his doctorate in 1965. He was then appointed master of novices at Rolling Prairie, Indiana, until 1968, after which he taught history at Holy Cross College and St. Mary’s College (and occasionally Notre Dame) for 36 years, plus an additional six years just at St. Mary’s before retiring in May 2006.

1951 Leroy F. “Skip” and Jeanne M. Tierney Berigan live in Middleton, Wisconsin, and remain active at Our Lady Queen of Peace as Eucharistic ministers and ushers. They also register new members on hospitality weekends and coordinate bus trips to the Fireside Theater. In addition, they work with UW medical and pharmacy students.

1952 Brother Edward C. Gill, SJ has been assigned to St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa,

Wisconsin. His previous placement was in Omaha, Nebraska at the Creighton Prep Jesuit Community.

1953 Frank C. O’Meara, OP has authored Vast Universe: Extraterrestrials and Christian Revelation, published under his religious name, Thomas F. O’Meara, in spring 2012 by Liturgical Press. The book asks hypothetical questions regarding “if ” there were intelligent life “out there,” how would that affect Christian views regarding God, salvation, good and evil, intelligence, freedom and other beliefs. A professor emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, he has also authored Erich Przwara, SJ: His Theology and His World and God in the World: A Guide to Karl Rahner’s Theology.

1959

Grant L. Holmes (see deceased) and his wife of 47 years, Patricia, lived in San Antonio, Florida, at the time of his death. Grant flew as a pilot for Continental Airlines for 37 years. He is survived by Patricia, their two daughters and two grandchildren.

1962

Elizabeth A. Dunn, OP has concluded five years as a councilor to the prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa and is now the principal at SS. Andrew-Thomas School in Potosi, Wisconsin.

David J. Lillesand lives in Clearwater, Florida, and will be spending this summer in Norway at the University of Oslo’s institute on government and politics.

Kathleen A. Walsh Zahradka retired in 2003 from teaching art in the Kettle Moraine School District. She and her husband, Jim, moved to Point Richmond, California, to be close to their sons and grandsons. They still return to Wisconsin each summer to spend time at their cabin in Webster.

1964

Judith A. Ganser, MD, MPH recently retired from her position as the medical director for maternal and child health and the Children’s Special Health Care Services program at the Indiana State Department of Health, where she had worked for 20 years. Her future plans include consulting, travelling and watercolor painting.

1965 Linda E. Coyle Greidanus was honored by the Social Workers’ Division of the Township Officials of Illinois as the 2011 Outstanding Social Worker of the Year for her work as associate director of welfare services for Schaumburg Township.

She has worked for the township for 23 years.

1966 Anda L. Bailey O’Connell has two children and lives in Janesville, Wisconsin, where she is a selfemployed realtor.

1967 Thomas J. Bennett was enshrined in the Madison Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet in June at the Monona Terrace. During his 30 years as baseball coach at Madison Memorial High School, his teams won two WIAA state titles. While a student at Edgewood High School he played football, basketball and baseball. He then played baseball for UW-Madison.

1969

Elizabeth H. “Bette” Goodno Weisshaar has assumed leadership of Vigil for Life, an affiliate of Pro-Life Wisconsin. She and her husband, Carl, are members of St. Mary Parish in Pine Bluff, Wisconsin.

1970

Kathleen M. Voss Goldsworthy was one of the top female finishers in the 60 to 64 age group of the 2012 Crazylegs Classic, completing the run in 53:35. Kathy and her husband, Tim, are the parents of three EHS graduates: Jennifer ’03, Joseph ’07 and Kevin ’09.

Thomas A. and Diane K. Buchanan Kramer were featured in an article about their church choir that appeared in the April 19 Diocese of Madison Catholic Herald. The Kramers bought a piece of music for the choir to perform that had come to have special meaning for their family over the years. Give me Jesus is a spiritual whose title became the theme for this year’s Madison Diocesan Choir annual concert.

1972

Gale Roeming Foster (see deceased) had worked at the Wisconsin Realtors Association for 34 years, before she had to leave her position as vice president for administrative services due to cancer.

In her job, she had been in charge of the department responsible for accounting, budgeting, human resources, membership, dues billing, building and equipment management, and computer software development and hardware support. In honor of her service, the WRA has now named its Staff of the Year award after Gale.

1973 Walter A. Donohue III, PhD is director of distance learning and director of the Technology in Early Childhood (TEC) Center at the Erickson Institute in Chicago, Illinois. As TEC director, he

16 • Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart is developing digital literacy resources and professional development programs for early childhood educators. He is a senior fellow of the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, for which he co-chaired the working group that updated and revised a position statement on technology and interactive media in education programs for young children. He has also launched a new digital literacy initiative to provide resources, professional development and support to early childhood teachers. Walter has consulted and presented widely on distance learning topics across the U.S. and abroad.

1981 Matthew T. Blessing has been appointed state archivist and director of the Library and Archives Division at the Wisconsin Historical Society, returning to the place where he began his career.

For the past 12 years, Matt has been head of special collections and archives at Marquette University. He and his wife, Susan Maloney, currently reside in Wauwatosa and have two sons, Sam and Abe. Matt also volunteers with the Wisconsin Archives Mentoring Service.

1983

Patrick T. Berigan has been a senior attorney for the Social Security Administration since 2006. He was also elected recently to a four-year term as Muskego (Wisconsin) municipal judge. He sings in the choir and cantors at St. Leonard’s Church and he coaches 8th grade girls basketball. Pat and his wife, Anita, a systems analyst for US Bank, have two college-age daughters.

Nora J. Berigan lives in Madison and works at The Learning Gardens Child Development Center (with her sister, Bridget) as a toddler teacher and unit leader for the toddler program. She has four children (Paderic C. Driscoll ’07, Kieran T. Driscoll ’08, Cael W. Driscoll ’11 and Brenna N. Driscoll ’13).

1975

Thomas J. Hofmeister and his wife, Heather, live in Madison and adopted twin girls on August 26, 2011. The girls brought the total number of grandchildren to nine for Benedict J. ’58 and Judith (Lynch ’58) Hofmeister, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.

Mary T. Zinkel Larson completed the 2011 Ironman Wisconsin competition, her first time entering the 2.4-mile swim/112-mile bike ride/26.2-mile run triathlon. Other EHS alumni racing in the competition were her sister and fellow novice, Susan M. Zinkel Chapman ’81 and her brother, Robert M. Zinkel ’86, who was participating in his fourth Ironman.

Brian J. Berigan is a manager for US Bank Fund Services. He and his wife, Kathy, the compliance officer at FIS Global, live in Stoughton, Wisconsin and have three adult children.

1976 Bridget A. Berigan lives in Middleton, Wisconsin, and works at The Learning Gardens Child Development Center (with her sister, Nora) as an infant teacher and unit leader for the infant education program. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Infant and Toddler Care through Capella University. Bridget has two children (Nicole M. Berigan Kedrowski ’96 and Bradley R. Rossi ’11) and two grandchildren.

1979 James M. “Jamie” Berigan and his wife, Cindy, have lived in Arlington Heights since returning from the East Coast in 1996. They have three daughters, ages 10 to 18. Currently the family chauffeur, Jamie worked for seven years at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, where he was instrumental in revising and implementing the Physical Geography program’s curriculum, and growing the program. Cindy consults in the food after 17 years with Kraft Foods.

Kelly J. Starr-King received a 2012 Governor’s Trailblazer Award for Wisconsin Women in Business in April. Kelly is vice president of operations at Drake & Company. Kelly and her mother, president Leanne Starr, and her sister, vice president of the legal division Kim Starr, have been leading the highly successful staffing agency since 1978. Their extensive involvement in the community has also given them a firsthand perspective of the kind of people it takes to make the business community flourish. Kelly is also proud to serve as Founder/President of their newest community project, “Lights on the Lake” Boat Parade & Fireworks, held on Labor Day

1984

1985 Joseph A. Creitz won the California Lawyer magazine’s 2012 Attorney of the Year award for his work on a case in which he sucessfully advocated before an 11-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, winning the unanimous reversal of a 27-year-old decision regarding insurance law.

His award was presented in March by California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

Besides maintaining his law practice, for which he is known nationally as an expert in the areas of employee benefits and federal litigation, Joe has also been an adjunct professor at U.C. Hastings College of the Law since 1994.

1987 Jami R. Halford Gilbert and her husband, Gerald, live in Madison with their two children, Jerry and Jasha Noelle, who helped their parents celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June.

1988 Maureen E. Berigan lives in Middleton, Wisconsin, and works as an ophthalmic tech at University Station. She has three children, all of whom attend Queen of Peace School.

1989 Molly McClimon Watke has been inducted to the University of Michigan Athletic Department Hall of Honor. She earned eight All-American honors and six All-Big Ten citations in cross country and

track during her collegiate tenure. She paced Michigan to back-to-back Big Ten cross country titles—the first in program history—in her final two seasons (1992 and 1993), capturing U-M’s first conference individual crown as senior en route to the Big Ten Athlete of the Year award. A threetime cross country NCAA All-American, McClimon placed fourth at the national meet in 1993. She also claimed back-to-back Big Ten titles in the 5,000-meter outdoor run and was the double champion in the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m as a senior. Following her final season, Molly was named Michigan’s Female Athlete of the Year and the Big Ten’s Conference Medal of Honor recipient. She is currently the Director of the Cardinal Jets, a youth running club in New Bremen, Ohio.

1991 Stephen L. Sosnowski is now the senior vice president and team leader for the commerical real estate division of Associated Bank in Madison. A former vice president of commercial lending with BMO Harris Bank, in his new position Stephen will lead a team of lenders and portfolio managers responsible for assisting commercial real estate clients with their financing and depository needs.

1995

Ann E. Bradt has been producing children’s educational media under the pseudonym Ruby Vanderzee and now has a series of books, DVDs, dolls and other materials for children ages 3 to 6 called “Ruby’s Studio” available through Whole Foods nationally and online. In addition to working as a writer and health educator, Judith has been a birth doula (labor coach). Beginning this summer, she also intends to provide foster care.

Christopher T. Tierney has been promoted to resident director of Merrill Lynch’s Madison office, where he has worked for the past 12 years, currently as a financial advisor and vice president of investments.

1996 J. Raza Lawrence is an attorney and partner in Margolin & Lawrence, a law firm in Beverly Hills, California. He and his wife, Laura Sullivan, live in Los Angeles.

1998

Matthew D. Lee has recently been elected to serve on the Pastoral Council for St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Madison. Matt is an attorney who earned who graduated from University of Notre Dame before attending the University of Alabama for law.

He and his wife of seven years, Rachel, lead classes at St. Thomas Aquinas for parents preparing for the baptism of their children.

They have two sons, Daniel and Christopher.

Amy E. Washbush Hilgendorf received her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies in the School of Human Ecology from UW-Madison.

She is currently employed as an evaluator at the Office of Educational Innovation and Evaluation at Kansas State University. She and husband David Hilgendorf live in Manhattan, Kansas.

Peter G. McPartland, Jr. and his wife, Alexandra (see marriages) live in Manhattan where he is a television producer and she is an internal medicine resident at NYU Langone Medical Center. Pete has worked as a producer for for A&E, MTV and Food Network, among others, most recently as the series producer for the second season of Cooking Channel’s “Easy Chinese.”

Katherine “Katie” Edelen has spent the last year as a Fulbright Scholar in Norway doing research on to what extent short-term deterioration of the local environment due to the impact of floods, drought and water supply endangerment is a factor in increasing the risk of political unrest or violence in Southeast Asia. For her work, she was honored with the 2011-2012 Lois Roth Award, a grant that was established to promote research that furthers international communication and understanding.

Katie used the money to fund a trip to Bangladesh, where she gathered additional data for her project.

In the fall, Katie will be entering Oxford University where she will pursue a Master of Science in Water Science, Policy and Management.

2000 Matthew J. D’Amour is the owner of Inside Out Wellness and is a holistic health and fitness practitioner in Madison. He was interviewed about nutrition and diet for the February 2012 issue of Madison Magazine.

2005 Elise A. G. Meyers traveled to Ghana earlier this year as a member of a delegation from the Graduate College at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Their mission is to form an interdisciplinary research and education collaboration around the theme of global health.

Elise is in the Medical Scholars Program at UIUC where she is pursuing an MD/PhD. The PhD is through the Department of Sociology. She has a particular interest in population health and underserved populations.

For the next few years she will develop and complete her doctoral dissertation including Ghana as a fieldwork site. She plans to assess the integration of public health and spirituality, determining what components of this harmonious integration might benefit the biomedicallyoriented US healthcare system.

She completed udergraduate studies at the College of Wooster, graduating in 2009 with a double major in biochemistry/molecular biology and religious studies.

Judah F. Yockey is enjoying life in Iowa City where he is pursuing a doctoral degree in theoretical physics at the University of Iowa.

He lived in Santiago, Chile, for a year before completing a BA in Spanish and a BS in astrophysics at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

2008 Rachel R. Eugster earned a BS in speech pathology and audiology from Marquette University in May 2012. She will leave Wisconsin this summer to attend LSU-Baton Rouge where she has been accepted into their graduate program in speech-language pathology.

2011 Eileen E. Gehring is attending University of Colorado where she is on the Buffaloes track team.

At the Air Force Team Challenge, held indoors in January, Eileen won the women’s 400-meter dash. She was also on the women’s one-mile relay team, which posted the third-fastest time in school history, crossing the line at 3:50.00.

Former Faculty and Staff Maureen McPartland, OP, who taught religious studies, 1981-1987, was featured with five other Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters in the Archdiocese of Dubuque’s Witness newspaper in an article titled “Jubilee: years of ministering with you.” The Sisters are examples of the continuing ministry and influence of Dominicans who have played a key role in the Dubuque Archdiocese for 175 years.

Rosa Rauth, OP, who taught math at EHS, 19701987, now lives at the Sinsinawa Motherhouse where she enjoys being the piano accompanist for the Sinsinawa Singing Seniors.

Marian Haas Stumpf taught English and religious studies, 1966-1970 at Edgewood as Sr. Marian Teresa (John Brebeuf ). Her husband, Thomas T. Stumpf, was at the time a priest from Holy Name Seminary (now closed) who also taught in the EHS Religion Department. Both left their religious vocations, Marian in 1970 to pursue a master’s degree in social work at UW Madison. In 1973, she and Tom married. She went on to earn a doctorate in nursing and now works as an RN case manager, and Tom worked for 45 years as a high school principal and administrator. They have three children, Jonathan, Jessica and Rebecca.

Four former teachers at Edgewood died recently and were buried at the Sinsinawa Motherhouse cemetery. Sister Antoinette “Toni” (Vincent

Mary) Callahan, who taught math and religion, 1953-54, died on January 17. Sister Marie Frederic Lucks, who taught social studies, 19661969, died on March 15. Sr. Marie Christine McAndrew, who taught English and business skills, 1954-67, died on July 17. Sister Marie Andrew Taylor, who was business manager, 19581960, died on March 8.

Carolyn (Sr. M. Theodora) N. Wildrick, OP, celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa.

MARRIAGES Peter G. McPartland, Jr. ’99 married Dr. Alexandra Sowa on April 28, 2012, in Greenville, Delaware. Many of Peter’s EHS classmates were in the wedding party. The couple spent their honeymoon in Los Cabos, Mexico, before returning to their home in New York City.

Han S. Row ’04 married Byuree “Leah” Kim in Seoul, South Korea, on March 3, 2012.

Timothy R. Vetter ’01 and Kristin Schapler were married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Evansville, Indiana, on November 5, 2011. Cobest men were Steven A. Benzschawel ’01 and Gregory J. Martinelli ’01. Tim and Kristin live in Murray, Kentucky, where he works for the U.S. Forestry Service.

Kristin R. Wolf ’03 and Brendan T. Baxter ’03 were married on May 12, 2012 at St. James Church in Madison and had their honeymoon in Hawaii. The couple lives in the Nakoma area of Madison.

BIRTHS Matthew J. Beglinger ’90 and his wife, Vicki, welcomed a baby sister for their two-year-old son, Gavin. Ava Valeria Virginia was born on January 27, 2012. The Beglingers live in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin.

Cara B. O’Malley Hinrichs ’01 and her husband, Scott, are pleased to announce the birth of their first child (and first grandchild for Paula and Michael P. O’Malley ’70), Harper Rose, on February 10, 2012. The Hinrichs family lives in Verona, Wisconsin.

Reunion Scenes

1967 Events for the 45th reunion of the class of 1967 were held on July 6 & 7. On Friday night the group gathered at Pooley’s Sports Bar with 47 classmates and guests attending. A golf outing was held at Hawks Landing on Saturday followed by another gathering on Saturday evening at the Hawks Landing Clubhouse attended by 45 from the class and 19 guests.

Planning on being in the Madison area over the Christmas holidays? Join us at the Alumni Basketball Tournament the weekend before Christmas and at the social gathering at The Laurel for anyone who would like to attend to reunite with classmates and friends. Memorial Prayer Services In addition to the annual All Souls Day liturgy service, Edgewood commemorates recently deceased alumni and their family members or other friends of the high school at four morning prayer services throughout the year, open to anyone who has lost a loved one.
